You roast two chicken breasts, flop some lettuce into a Tupperware, drizzle it with vinegar, and wonder what your life has come to: welcome to dieting in 2020. With sugar, carbs and animal fats all off the table, life is now an endless cycle of salad and chewy poultry. You then reach for a healthy mid-afternoon snack: a protein ball, which the packaging assures you is high in protein and ‘good’ fats. But is it really good for you? Luci Daniels, top dietician for The Daily Mail, argues not.Last week Luci wrote that protein balls are “packed with dried fruit such as dates, nuts and ‘natural’ sweeteners like agave nectar – all known Fodmaps [foods which cause irritable bowel syndrome]” in an article entitled, “Why woke diets featuring superfoods such as avocado… are leading to a surge of distressing gut problems.”Not only that but as nutrition coach Max Lugavere points out, there are much better ways of attaining healthy fats than protein balls.Taking to Instagram late last year, the author of New York Times bestseller Genius Foods wrote: “Did your keto guru tell you that you needed to eat ‘fat bombs’ because KeToSiS? Let’s dive in to this issue.”“If you chose to adhere to a keto diet, it’s empowering to know that ketone production is a function of low insulin, which is achieved by consuming a low carbohydrate diet,” Max said. “Adding more fat to the mix is only going to offset the fat that you burn off of your own body, but feel free to enjoy such high fat foods if you enjoy them.”

“A cheaper and likely healthier alternative, however, are nature’s fat bombs, aka nuts!” Max continued. “Nuts are an incredible source of many antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and a large meta-analysis of observational studies shows that 20g a day of nuts, equivalent to a handful, can cut risk of coronary heart disease by 29%, cancer by 15%, and premature death by 22%.
“I don’t have comparable figures for the fat bombs on the left.”
For those that want a cheaper, more natural alternative to protein balls, Max then left some information on the carb content of nuts: “Good news! Nuts are all low in carbs, though there is still some variation. Hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, and Brazil nuts have fewer than 2g of digestible carbs per serving, while cashews have more at almost 8g digestible carbs per serving.”Let the squirrel diet begin.

Adjusting the time on that expensive watch while it’s still on your wrist? You’ve just broken a cardinal rule of horology.
Whether it’s the first or the fifth in your horological arsenal, a Swiss timepiece is a style accessory like no other, and it, therefore, deserves to be treated that way. As the old saying goes for classic timepieces, telling the time is just a part of the job. The remaining role of a watch is dedicated to showcasing the unique craftsmanship of a beautifully engineered mechanism, a statement which is an extension of a man’s own personality and style.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that there definitive guidelines from experts on how one should and should not care for their prized ticker. Think you’ll pass the test? Check out the bad habits below to see if you’re on the watch offender’s list.
#1 Changing The Time While It’s On Your Wrist
Pay attention to how the specialists do it and you’ll notice that they’ll only ever adjust the time when it’s off the wrist with the watch face pointed directly at themselves. The reason behind this is due to the potential damage caused when twisting a crown while it’s your wrist. Lateral stresses acting on the delicate winding stem when it’s on the wrist can cause it to yield or snap.
So the next time you need to make an adjustment, take your hand off whatever it is you’re holding, remove the watch and wind with care. It’ll save you a lot of heartache later on down the track.
#2 Over Tightening The Crown
You’re not capping off a Coke bottle here so don’t treat your mechanical watch like one. Giving the crown an extra bit of elbow grease when it’s already stopped is a big no-no as this can also damage the winding stem. The general rule is to stop exerting force as soon as the crown won’t turn anymore.
#3 Not Cleaning The Timepiece
Cleaning a timepiece from dust, oils, stains and foreign objects is mandatory if your intention is to wear it well into the future. This is one of the easiest habits a man can teach himself and only requires a few minutes of your time a week. Wiping down the timepiece regularly will ensure the original appearance of the watch and strap is retained.
There are two proven ways to cleaning a watch – dry and wet. For a non-water resistant timepiece, avoid moisture at all costs and use a soft dry cloth instead. Water resistant watches have a bit more tolerance to water so use a damp cloth to clean the watch case and strap. Watches with metal cases or straps can be cleaned with a mildly soaped cloth and fine toothbrush.
#4 Neglecting Leather Straps
So much attention is given to the watch itself that wearers often forget to show some TLC to the fine leather straps. Early deterioration of the leather grain can occur when it is constantly exposed to direct sun light, water, humidity, cosmetics or oil-based products. In the most common scenario the leather will stain and leave behind unsightly discolourations on the strap. To prevent this, simply keep it dry whenever possible with a cloth. The strap’s integrity and ageing aesthetics will thank you for it later.
#5 Showering & Swimming With Your Watch On
Guys, the keyword here is ‘water resistance’ which is not the same as ‘waterproof’. Water resistance varies depending on the style of watch but over a long duration of time even higher rated water resistant watches can have their seals deteriorate. You’ll know when this is happening (and it’s too late) when condensation forms on the crystal.
If you can avoid this bad habit of submerging your watch in water then definitely do so. Professionals recommend checking a watch’s seal every 12 to 18 months to spot any early signs of deterioration.
Swimming with your watch is another bad habit that should be reduced. Designated diving watches are okay in this case but ensure that the crown is tightened all the way before entering the water. Once under, avoid pressing buttons or adjusting the crown as this could allow water to seep inside.
If the watch comes into contact with salt or chlorinated water from the beach or pools, wash it down with fresh water immediately as this can damage the sensitive coatings and seals on the watch. Make sure to clean thoroughly with a soft brush to dislodge any fine sand or salt particles.
#6 Don’t Adjust The Date When The Hour Hand Is Between 9 & 3 O’Clock
This is a little know fact but avoid adjusting the date on your prized timepiece when the hour hand is sitting between 9 and 3 o’clock. Avoiding this bad watch habit will ensure you don’t damage the internal gears and pinion.
#7 Not Following Mechanical Winding Rules
Automatic watches need to be worn daily in order to retain its peak timing performance. The right amount of turns to power the automatic watch should always be between 20 and 40. Additionally if the watch is worn on the wrist daily, it should be wound twice a week. For less frequent use, wind it once every two weeks.
#8 Subjecting It To Extreme Temperatures, Magnetic Fields & Shock
Even the obvious will sometimes get broken so it’s always worth mentioning again. Avoid subjecting your timepiece to extreme heat or cols as this can affect its performance and accuracy. Anything over 60°C or under 0°C is no place for a mechanical or automatic watch as this can permanently damage the mechanism from parts expanding whilst moving or becoming brittle and snapping.
Magnetic fields can also interfere with a watch’s timing integrity and in severe cases can even cause it to stop. As such, avoid leaving your mechanical watch around speakers, fridges, computers and anything else with magnets.
Unexpected shocks can damage the sensitive components of your watch so keep it in a safe place when it’s not worn and avoid rapid movements with your hands and arms when it is on you.
#9 Exposure To Foreign Chemicals
Fine luxury watches often have cases treated for protection but subjecting it to harsh chemicals can still cause it damage. Ensure that your timepiece doesn’t come into regular contact with things such as cosmetics, fragrances, detergents, alcohol based products or anything else with an acidic base. In the worst case scenario, you could be seeing a hefty repair bill for damage to the case, bezel markings, leather strap or bracelet.

From its chicken edamame salads to its crisp champagne, from its salt n’ pepper squid to its ergonomic seats, Qantas business-class gets a lot right. It even continues banning the poorly dressed from its lounge – a move other airlines are too milksoppy to maintain. In other words, Qantas is a classy operation. There is one feature which I have never quite understood though – Qantas’ bizarre-looking cutlery. While I understand no airline is allowed Jack The Ripper steak knives or Lucifer-Pronged forks, Qantas’ undersized silverware never ceases to weird me out.Besides making you feel like an overgrown child, Qantas’ cutlery looks like something you would give to an ill-tempered prison inmate. And the fact that Qantas’ competitors – like Virgin Australia – are able to provide normal-looking cutlery suggests it’s not a question of regulation, but taste.
View this post on Instagram
Although Virgin’s cutlery doesn’t look like it came straight out of La Nouvelle Seine either, it is long enough for a business class hombre to waggle about mid-story, and to make him feel better about his minuscule family jewels.Qantas’ cutlery? Not so much. Try emphasising a point with one of these ‘bad boys’ and you’ll look like you’re delivering a sermon to a group of imaginary pygmies.
The one thing we can say is it has improved over the years, going from heavy and ugly to short and cute – with a weird groove in the handle. So what’s to be done? Well, they’ve improved the weight and slickness from the Noritake x Marc Newson days thanks to David Caon.
… so all that remains is designing a shape that doesn’t look identical (in shape) to a set of plastic knives and forks with a gratuitous groove in the handle.
“The ‘new’ cutlery looks just as bad. I have nicer and more presentable cutlery in my kitchen drawers, purchased from the mega prolific Woolies. I have complained about the Marc Newson design since its introduction and by letter in 2012.”
“I have just reiterated my complaint to Qantas and in researching that, found this new move to Noritake. They have produced curvaceous and beautiful cutlery in the past. Why should they produce camping equipment for Qantas First [and business] Class? If these photos are correct, I will have to draw out my quill and continue complaining.”While old mate Peter seems deranged in how seriously he takes his tableware, and while we don’t believe Qantas’ cutlery is that bad, the point remains: a fair few people are weirded out. And considering how good all the other aspects of the Qantas Business Class experience are, perhaps it’s time to consider another change?

A couple of months ago Timex reissued their famous ‘Q’ watch in a Rolex Pepsi inspired colourway. The watch world went crazy for it. Like, seriously crazy. It has been stocked a couple of times since the initial release and has sold out in a couple of days every single time. Why is it so popular? Well, it perfectly combines two iconic watch brands, from totally opposite ends of the watchmaking spectrum. Timex, founded in 1854 has built a reputation for making quality watches that are both stylish and affordable and Rolex, founded in 1905 that is regarded as the ultimate symbol of luxurious Swiss watchmaking. Whilst the Q isn’t a direct replica or copy of the Rolex GMT ‘Pepsi’ the red and blue rotating bezel is sufficient to help the wearer feel that their watch is special, akin to that oh-so-desirable Rolex counterpart. Pair that cool styling with quality construction and an affordable $179 price tag and you’ll easily understand the appeal of the Timex Q. Whether you’re already an aficionado, or just starting your journey, the Q is a worthy and special watch to add to your collection.Shop Timex Q $179

A good majority of us train with a partner. They can be there to spot you when using a barbell or dumbbells and can act as an extra form of motivation to help improve those gains.
But what about when your gym partner is your actual partner? We’re not talking about taking shameless mirror selfies with the captions “Teamwork makes the dream work” or “Those who train together, stay together,” but actually working out together.
How do you go about navigating the gym floor with your girlfriend in tow, without it ending in a domestic fallout?
Other than reading what Tim Robards has to say, we can turn our attention to YouTube vlogger, Instagram influencer, Gymshark athlete and all-round dench guy David Laid, who has posted a video to his YouTube account, taking us through a typical day in the gym with his better half. While he and his other gym bro hit the racks, piling on weights like they were going out of fashion, he was still around to provide support to his girlfriend.
Be Supportive, Not Overbearing
And that’s rule number one, you want to make sure you’re being supportive in your girlfriend’s workout, as opposed to being their coach or personal trainer. If there’s something wrong with her form or technique, by all means, correct it, but don’t go all drill sergeant on her. You want to still be able to sleep in the same bed at night, right?
Change Things Up
And unless your girl wants to get bulging biceps like you (you stud) chances are she isn’t going to want to hit the weights every time you step foot into the gym. In fact, working out doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go to your gym at all, you could always go with her to a class she wants to try, or maybe something like yoga, #equality.
Reddit user studiousglenn says, “On occasion, though, we even the playing field by taking a class together (so one Saturday she tries CrossFit, the next Saturday we brush up on our ballet, etc).”
JunahCg adds “She can do the same lifts but lighter. You can do the classes with her. You can go at the same time and work during her class. Or you can find something new you both like.”
Don’t Try To Compete, You’ll Finish Last
In relation to this, there’s a good chance you’re going to be stronger than her, so don’t go making it a competition as to who can lift more. Especially because you know you’d hate it if she was able to lift a heavier load than you.
If on the likely occasion you do lift different weights, if there’s only one bar available to use, don’t stress when having to swap out the loads. Swansonic says, “Her weights are much lower, but it’s not a big deal to swap plates around. Only time it can be a pain is when we deadlift, but we usually snag a second bar for that so it’s normally a non-issue. She was a D1 pole-vaulter so she’s no stranger to the barbell.”
Split Up
No, not in that way.
The most likely scenario for most couples is that you’ll have different goals. Guys want big chests and arms, women tend to desire slim waists and a peach of a backside. Obtaining these inevitably requires different equipment, so unless the equipment you need happens to be next to each other, chances are you’re going to be in different areas of the gym.
But don’t stress, she isn’t going to go off with that hot personal trainer who likes to loiter around the treadmills. Splitting up in the gym is completely common, as some other Reddit users prove.
Lilacpolecats says “I go to the gym with my SO, but we pretty much do our own thing while we’re there.”
“We end up checking up on the other every once in a while and we both take about the same amount of time with our stuff. He’s a lot more athletic and strong then I am so we don’t do exactly the same stuff… but it works for us, and we have fun :)”
Take Her On A Date
Have you ever thought about a gym-date with a potential new flame? If you both have a common interest and love for keeping fit, then it’s feasible you should be able to rock up in matching activewear. It will certainly make a change from going out to dinner or the movies.
Byzio, agrees: “Gym dates are great on light/de-load days. It can be good because it gets testosterone pumping which increases sexual desire. Plus I can touch her to help with her form.”
Ultimately, working out with your partner will come down to the desire to stay fit and the type of exercise(s) you want to carry out. Even if the two of you don’t lift together, just travelling to the gym as a couple can have positive effects on the relationship.
AzzaB92 summarises, “My girlfriend and I just started recently going to the gym together (1 month now). She wanted to tone up and get fitter. I have been training for a couple of years and showed her upper body and lower body exercises that work areas she wanted to improve.”
“After one week she got measurements done, bf%, cooks meals with me and has taken it really seriously. She does my workouts, deadlifts, bench, OHP, everything. Best thing that ever happened in our relationship I feel… “

Maybe you crave Laird Hamilton’s abs. Maybe you were entranced by Craig Anderson’s butter-milk style. Maybe you just need a hobby. Whatever it is, before you start surfing (unless you want to lose 100% of your dignity, get abused by locals and give up after two weeks) you’re going to need a guide. And no matter how well versed you are in surf brands—there’s more to surfing than looking the part. Here’s how to nail it.
Buying Your First Board
Sure, the pros look cool. But if you buy the same boards as them, you make a difficult task impossible. More so than most other sports, in surfing you need radically different equipment depending on your skill level.
- Start on a large, stable, foam board, and get the basics down-pat, before moving on to progressively shorter boards
- Adults should start on something between 7 and 8ft
- Kids or lighter adults should be on something around 5-7ft
- Heavier individuals should go even longer—9ft if possible
- Skipping board progression lowers your wave count and doesn’t make surfing fun

Buying Your First Wetsuit
A common beginner mistake is to blow all your money on the latest pro-model shortboard, spend the remaining $50 in your bank account on a leaky, second hand piece of (neoprene) crap, paddle out in the wrong spot, freeze your butt off for 15 minutes, and go home without catching a wave. But at least you looked cool in the parking lot, right?
- Make sure your suit is thick enough to keep you warm (for a Sydney winter you’ll want a good quality 3/2, for a Torquay winter you’ll want a 4/3 with boots—or maybe even a 5/4)
- A new entry-level suit is a better investment than a second-hand high-end model (unless you have the exact same body type as the previous owner)
- To work out what thickness you need, check this chart
- To work out size, look at the size chart on the website of the brand you’re buying (it differs between brands), or—even better—head to your local surf shop and try one on
- Remember: your wetsuit should be tight (so water doesn’t flush through), but not so restrictive you can’t move
- Value for money brands include Xcel, NCHE and Need Essentials
- RipCurl tends to be more expensive, but durable
- Quicksilver and O’Neil tend to start out super comfy and flexible, but have been known to waste away quickly
- Zipperless wetsuits are more convenient (but wear out more quickly) than chest zip wetsuits
- Chest zip wetsuits are warmer and more convenient than back zip wetsuits (but wear out more quickly)
Our recommendations are:

Essential Rules & Etiquette
Pissing people off in the surf is a bit like road rage—except you can’t lock your doors and drive away. You’d think this would make the line-up a civilised place, but if you’ve ever surfed anywhere popular, you’ll know: humans always find a way to suck. So to avoid potential fisticuffs on the beach, these are the rules to follow.
- Don’t drop in (i.e. don’t catch a wave someone else is already riding)
- Don’t catch a wave if someone next to you has been waiting longer than you and is making a move to catch it. Top tip: if they are better than you, assume they will catch it. However, if they are also a beginner, be ready to take it if they fail (don’t do this to people who are good though, as you could get in their way or cause a section of their wave to break prematurely)
- Keep track of who has priority. Generally priority is determined by who is closest to the peak (where the peeling wave first starts to break), then in the following order. 1) Locals who have been waiting a while for a wave. 2) Locals who have just caught a wave. 3) Outsiders who have been waiting a while. 4) Outsiders who have just caught a wave
- Don’t snake: if you are waiting for a wave next to someone with priority, don’t paddle around them to get closer to the peak. Conversely, if you have been waiting ages and someone paddles around you to “snake” your priority, let them know you’re onto them…
- To avoid getting in people’s way, paddle out in a rip or channel; once you are out the back you can make your way over to the peak
- Don’t bail (throw your board behind you) when you are paddling out. If you are’t skilled enough to duck-dive or eskimo roll under the whitewash then you shouldn’t be out there. Wait for a smaller day
- If you are paddling towards a wave someone is surfing, unless there’s room for you to sprint past before they reach you, it’s common courtesy to paddle into the whitewater, leaving the open face free for them to surf on
- Be fun! Call other people into waves. Smile
- Don’t be too fun. Claiming every wave like Gabriel Medina whilst surfing like a flailing hunchback won’t score street cred
Despite reading all this, reconcile yourself to the fact no matter how well you understand the basic unwritten rules, as a beginner your lack of ocean awareness means there will be times when you get in someone’s way and are unable to do anything about it. Don’t stress: just do your best and don’t surf on big days that are out of your ability level.
Reading The Surf Report
Understanding the surf forecast is a crucial part of surfing, especially as a beginner who doesn’t have the skill set to deal with a wide range of conditions. Popular forecasting websites we recommend are Swellnet, Coastalwatch and Magic Seaweed. These websites should tell you the size, direction and period of the swell, the strength and direction of the wind and the tide. Here’s how to make sense of it all.
Size
Each forecasting website will have a slightly different scale, so it’s usually best to stick to one, and over time you’ll get a feel for what they really mean by “2ft”. As a beginner 1-2ft conditions are ideal, anything over 4ft should be avoided (unless you find a protected spot that is 2ft when everywhere else is 4ft—but more on that later). A common beginner grumble is, “The forecast was wrong.” But 9/10 times you just read it incorrectly. This is because a “2ft” wave can arrive at your beach looking more like 4ft (or completely bypass your beach and not break at all), depending on the swell direction, period and the tide.
Direction
If the waves are from the south and you live at a south-facing beach, the waves will be the exact size forecasted—or bigger. If you live at a North facing beach (during a south swell) then you will miss the brunt of its power. In terms of wind direction, if the wind is offshore (coming from the land blowing out towards the ocean) then the waves will be held up longer, making them cleaner and steeper. If the wind is onshore (blowing from the ocean towards the land) the conditions will be messy, and the waves will crumble. Although these days look uglier, as long as it’s not howling, a gentle onshore can make the waves easier to catch for beginners. If the wind is “cross shore” (blowing up or down the coast), North facing beaches will be protected (and clean) in a southerly wind, and south facing beaches will be better when the wind is from the North.
Swell Period
This refers to the number of seconds between each line of swell. Typically the longer the period the better groomed (and the more powerful) the waves will be. Shorter period swells are known as “windswells” and are often weaker, short lived and provide lower quality waves. Long period swells are known as “groundswells” (if a big one of these comes through the forecasting websites normally include a “experts only” disclaimer in their surf report).
Tide
Some places work better on a high tide, some work better on low or mid. Check your local spot using a forecasting website and it should tell you. Low tide tends to produce steeper waves, so if you are learning it’s best to stick to mid or high tide.
Pay Wall
Unless you are planning a trip, day to day it’s not necessary to pay for the “premium” versions of these sites (which lets you see the forecast for more than a few days in advance), because (normally) a forecast only really becomes accurate a few days out anyway.
Reading The Ocean
Before you paddle out, check where the rips are, and where the impact zone is. Ideally, you want to paddle out in the rip and catch waves in the impact zone. Unless you have literally just started learning (or aren’t a strong swimmer), in which case you should stick to waist deep water, wading out into the impact zone as far as you are comfortable, and catching white-water. For everyone else, here’s some tips to get you onto the waves no one else was in position for.
- Bigger lines of swell will break further out
- Smaller lines of swell will break closer to shore
- Paddling sideways away from the peak can buy you time if a wave is breaking too soon
- Paddling sideways towards the peak can help you catch a smaller wave you would otherwise have been too far out to get onto
- Waves take longer to break at high tide (so if you notice the tide starting to get higher, take up a position closer to the beach)
- Waves break more aggressively at low tide
- Rips are characterised by sand, debris, and where the waves are breaking last (or not breaking at all)
Exercises To Help You Improve Faster
In the words of the best surfer in the world, John John Florence, “The best training for surfing is surfing.” Although he’s right, he’s currently out of action with an injury. Maybe it was preventable, maybe it wasn’t. Either way it can’t hurt to be fit, strong and flexible.
- Yoga will help with flexibility and breath holds
- Cardio (especially freestyle swimming) will prepare you for a punishing paddle out
- Swimming laps underwater (never do this alone) will help you deal with wipe-outs
- Weight training should (in a balanced way) target your lats, chest, shoulders and back, to increase your paddle power. Some great examples are push ups, pull ups, dips, bench press, deadlifts, and one arm dumbbell rows
- Although you won’t spend much time on your feet as a beginner, having strong legs helps once you’re up and riding. Try squats, calf raises, sprint shuttles, leg presses, leg extensions, hamstring curls, and the glute/abductor machine
- More important than strength is balance, which can be improved (marginally) by spending time on balance boards and skateboards. But really the only way to improve your “surf balance” is by surfing

The Benefit Of Lessons
- Great way to learn in a safe environment
- Great way to nip bad habits in the bud
- Teacher can tell you the best place to surf
- Meet like minded people
The Disadvantage Of Lessons
- No teacher can put in hard yards and the years of experience it takes to become competent for you
- Getting things wrong painfully (i.e. paddling out in the wrong spot) teaches you quicker than an instructor explaining the theory (then making all the decisions for you)
- Can be expensive
Best Break To Learn In Australia
Each spot has its day, depending on the conditions. That said, if we had to pick an ideal beach for learning, we’d pick somewhere warm, consistent and with lots of surf schools. By that measure Manly, Bondi, Newcastle, Byron Bay and Noosa are all excellent places to learn to surf. For intermediates, Bali, Morocco and Portugal are also incredible places to surf, relax and travel. If you have some serious cash, the Maldives is known as intermediate surf heaven: a gentler version of Indonesia’s Mentawais, and just as picturesque.
Safety
- If you wouldn’t be comfortable swimming in from out the back (behind where the waves are breaking) to the shore, don’t go out
- Too many people rely on their leg ropes and board to get themselves out of dodgy situations, but the truth is—anything can happen
- Surf with a friend
- Talk to the Life Guards in summer to get the lowdown on the conditions, and make sure you keep your “swim fitness” up
