Boost Your Metabolism & Drop Weight With These Everyday Foods You’ll Find Anywhere
Boost Your Metabolism & Drop Weight With These Everyday Foods You’ll Find Anywhere

Building the perfect physique starts in the kitchen and we don’t mean raiding the ice cream safe every two days. Today we’re talking about your body’s metabolism and how to speed it up in order to burn excess calories, drop weight and reduce the risk of obesity related diseases. These foods come as a suggestion from the research compiled by Medical News Today and features some all time favourites like eggs, green tea and coffee. More importantly they’re cheap and readily available.

Burn baby, burn.

Eggs

Protein-rich foods like eggs are the best options for speeding up your metabolism. Protein is credited for boosting metabolism thanks to its nutrients which increase metabolic rate as the human body requires more energy to digest than it does for fats or carbs. With 6.29grams of protein per hard boiled egg, it’s a perfect and cheap option for those wanting to increase their metabolism. Research has even suggested that people who consumed 29 percent of their total caloric as protein experienced a higher metabolic rate than people who received 11 percent of their total calories from protein.

Flaxseeds

Known as the “functional food”, flaxseeds contain protein, vitamins and key nutrients that boost metabolism and improve metabolic syndrome. In other words it helps to prevent conditions which contribute to diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Scientists cite a recent 2019 study which saw a boost in metabolism on mice who consumed flaxseeds. They attributed this to the food’s natural fibre, protein, essential omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and more. They even went as far as suggesting that the food could treat: arthritis, autoimmune diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurological disorders and osteoporosis.

Lentils

According to a 2016 study on animals, researchers found that eating lentils and legumes like beans and peas was crucial in preventing and treating metabolic syndrome. They’re also rich in protein with fibre to kick.

Chilli & Capsicums

Not only do capsicums speed up metabolism, they also provide good levels of satiety (feeling of fullness). This is thanks to a compound found in the vegetable called capsaicin. Reports from 2012 and 2015 suggest that consuming capsaicin will moderately boost one’s metabolic rate.

Ginger

You might not be a fan of ginger alone, but adding it to meals is said to increase one’s body temperature and metabolic rate to help control appetite. A 2018 review on the studies surrounding ginger found that there were positive effects on weight loss and metabolic profiles in overweight people. Probably stay away from ginger beer though as the high levels of sugar might offset the benefits.

Green Tea

A favourite amongst detractors of coffee, green tea is said to possess a host of health benefits. The verdict is however still out on its effectiveness despite suggestions that it can increase fat metabolism both at rest and during exercise. A small study in 2013 suggests that drinking 4 cups of green tea daily can significantly help drop body weight and your BMI (Body Mass Index) amongst other things.

Coffee

There is a God after all – a coffee God that is. Thanks to its high caffeine content it’s believed that coffee can stimulate metabolism. Decaffeinated coffee is exempt from the metabolism-boosting effects and there also rules to follow. If you add cream or sugar to the coffee, the calorie content will increase meaning you’ll undo the fast metabolism.

Brazil Nuts

You won’t need to travel to Brazil to try these nuts. Brazil nuts are readily available at your local supermarket and are known as one of the richest sources of selenium, the mineral that looks after metabolism, reproduction and immune function. As a bonus they also contain protein and healthy fats that can make you feel fuller. There’s a catch though. The National Institute of Health states that a single Brazil nut contains 68 – 91 micrograms of selenium, a figure which is over the daily recommended limit of 55 micrograms a day. The researchers says it’s important not to go overboard with nuts as this could cause selenium toxicity.

Broccoli

Glucoraphanin is the stuff in broccoli that’s said to benefit metabolism. More specifically it helps “retune” metabolism as well as lowering blood fat levels. The result is the reduction in risk of age-related diseases.

Dark Leafy Vegetables

Kale junkies rejoice. This along with spinach and other leafy green vegetables contain a high iron content which aids in boosting metabolism. Whilst eating on it on its own is hard, the best bet is to mix them into salads and other dishes.

White Suits Are The Sharpest Style Statement You Can Ever Make; Here’s The Right Way To Wear It
White Suits Are The Sharpest Style Statement You Can Ever Make; Here’s The Right Way To Wear It

Mention a white suit and most people will conjure up a handful of images; Al Pacino in The Godfather, a Jay Gatsby style gent from the roaring 20s or Don Jonson’s white suit in Miami Vice. Either way, it’s not a contemporary reference and if most chaps were asked to give a white suit a whirl, you’d likely be met with a blank stare and the faintest whiff of fear.

When it comes down to it, a white suit is a bold fashion statement, even for the most sartorially discerning. However, when pulled off well, it can also be the ultimate in gentleman’s chic and a sure-fire way to pull ahead of the pack when it comes to the fashion stakes. Here, we explain how to wear the white suit for modern times.

How To Wear A Formal White Suit

When the mercury rises, so too do pale coloured suits in lighter fabrics. While white is perhaps the boldest amongst them, it’s also a great way to keep cool at cocktail events or dinners in the warmer months.

Look for an unlined or half-lined version of this suit, paying attention to details like a wider peaked lapel and soft Neapolitan tailoring around the shoulders. This ensures that the suit looks chic without feeling overly stiff or like a white version of the standard business suit.

For more formal occasions, look at pairing your white suit with either a pale blue cotton shirt or, alternatively, a contrasting indigo or khaki shirt. If a tie is required, turn to knitted silk ties with a squared off base to ensure that your look remains more ‘the Hamptons’ than Central Business District.

How To Wear A Casual White Suit

A white suit is the ultimate hybrid – whilst it can be dressed up, with some small tweaks it can easily transition to something more casual. One of our favourite summer-time looks is a white linen suit paired with a well-fitted navy crew neck tee. If you’re sure of your style credentials, you can even look at scrunching up the sleeves for a laid-back but elegant sartorial moment.

If the thought of wearing a suit sans collared shirt abhors you, a linen shirt is also a terrific way to dial down the formality of suiting whilst still keeping you cool in a delightfully foppish, dishevelled way. Experiment with Chinese collars here and be open to playing with patterns like bold candy stripes.

What Shoes To Wear With A White Suit

Never. Ever. Black. Unlike other suiting occasions, a white suit leaves little margin for error when it comes to footwear and dark coloured shoes are certain to ruin your vibe. They add weight and throw off the nonchalance which a white suit inevitably imbues on the wearer.

Instead (and depending on the occasion) look at alternative options. A pair of Common Projects sneakers in white or even blush lend an attitude whilst still maintaining a level of polish. Alternatively, a loafer in a lighter shade of brown or a suede espadrille are both great options that can be worn time and time again.

Regardless of the footwear you opt for, we’d discourage socks as they make for a more Winter-y ensemble. Instead, talk to your tailor about having your trousers hemmed with a thick cuff that hits just on the ankle bone. This will make for a sharp look and stop you from dipping into a territory that’s too casual.

White Suit Materials & Shades

Not all suits are made equal and this is even more so the case for a white one. Fabric and construction are everything and this will ultimately be what distinguishes you from looking like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

An easy thing to look for when you’re on the hunt is natural versus synthetic fibres. While a synthetic can be harder to spot when it’s in a darker shade, with white you can spot the difference from a mile away. Instead look for cottons, silks and light wool blends. These sometimes have a creamy colour to them which is totally normal and communicates quality and craftsmanship.

The other key thing is impeccable tailoring. White isn’t a universally flattering colour so make sure the area around your body fits correctly. A good tailor should be able to create the effect of a V-shaped torso even if your body is anything but.

What Accessories To Wear With A White Suit

Less is more with a white suit. The colour is bold enough as is, so look for pocket squares in similarly pale shades or colours that complement whatever shirt you might be wearing. For example, if you’re in a blue shirt, look at a pocket square with a cobalt and white paisley pattern. Play with fabrics as well, looking at options like paper thin linen and silk to add a point of interest without detracting from the overall ensemble.

When it comes to belts, ideally you won’t need one. Like with heavy shoes, a belt can add unnecessary weight to a white suit so invest in a tailor who can ensure your trousers fit perfectly. If a belt is a must, ensure it complements the colour of your shoes and steer clear of anything too thick or dark.

White Suit FAQ

When do you wear a white suit?

White suits best complement outdoor events. They will make you look like a million bucks while keeping you cool and comfortable. You can wear it for weddings, parties and even business meetings.

How should your white suit fit?

You white suit should be perfectly fitted, tailored to hug your shoulders and waists. If it is too big, the shoulders will bunch up with extra fabric.

What accessories to wear with a white suit?

Use minimal accessories with your white suit. A silver wristwatch or understated cufflinks are enough to add sophistication. You may also wear a light-colored bow tie or a colorful pocket square.

Future Prince Just Overtook Drake In The Luxury Watch Game
Future Prince Just Overtook Drake In The Luxury Watch Game

How do you outshine a man who wears a $300,000 Richard Mille watch onto the VIP courtside of Toronto Raptor games? You wear a $300,000 Richard Mille timepiece and a Rolex timepiece at the same time to a Toronto Raptors game. That’s right – the notorious double watch phenomenon.

For the uninitiated, Future Prince is a Canadian DJ and Drake’s manager. Needless to say the man wouldn’t be short of a few dollars himself given Drake’s net worth of US$150 million. We assume that buys you the ability to rock a luxury timepiece on both wrists. In the recent snap taken from Game Six featuring the Raptors and the Bucks, Future Prince had what appears to be a gold Rolex Day-Date and Richard Mille’s RM 11-03 Flyback Chronograph. As a ballpark figure that’s roughly $160,000 on the right hand anything from $30,000 up on the left hand – if our watch model predictions are right. Given Drake’s penchant for custom diamond finishing, it’s likely to be even more than those figures if Future Prince shares the same extravagant tastes.

But we digress. The double watch has long been championed (and lampooned) by people like Diego Maradona who made a spectacle out of rocking two Hublots wherever he went.

It’s considered a fashion faux pas by many due to its inherent ‘wankiness’ but on Future Prince it seems to be a bit more natural if not surprising. We attribute this to his smart casual attire which allows the watches to take centre stage rather than everything else all at once.

Drake’s friendship with Future Prince runs deep and they have both been sporting impressive timepieces for a while now.

The real question is: Would you dare do the double watch, or should the look best be reserved for those with more money than fashion sense?

Retired Stockbroker Reveals The Real Dangers Of Going Big On An Inside Trade
Retired Stockbroker Reveals The Real Dangers Of Going Big On An Inside Trade

This story was originally published on Stockhead

Here’s an interesting fact for you to boast to your fellow trading buddies over the weekend. In the UK, it was only made illegal to buy and sell shares on insider information in 1980. Before 1980, there was a legal free-for-all party going on and I only discovered this fact when I arrived on the scene in the mid 80s to find out that the party was well and truly over.

Everyone had been at it, so I was told.

Horse trainers would swap horse tips for stock tips and Monday morning buy orders from racehorse owners were taken as a signal that something was on and everyone would pile in after their order was filled. This meant it was steak for dinner every Monday night for Mrs Broker and her tribe, so even the local butcher was able to muscle into some insider action, without actually knowing it.

As for all of us budding brokers who got a start after 1980, all we could do was listen to stories from the fat, old, red-nosed broker propping up the bar, about how he had bought his first holiday house “at your age” every time you went to get a round in.

Obviously, none of this would stop this wannabe broker from joining in late to the party. One day, I was able to, when little Jimmy ‘Shuffle Shoes’ called an emergency meeting at his favourite watering hole.

Buy Now Or Grieve Later

Now, little Jimmy was a legend to all of us, as like all junior brokers, we started out as messengers and little Jimmy got his nickname as his little legs would shuffle three times faster than anyone else’s.

He would dart in and out of people’s legs, delivering important settlement paperwork around the city and still be at the pub an hour earlier than any of us. We all got to know each other from scurrying around the streets delivering and collecting paperwork, so it was like a brotherhood.

The brotherhood of messengers.

At the meeting little Jimmy produced three pieces of paper marked ‘Private and Confidential’ and upon reading them it was obvious a company bid was imminent and the company’s name and the bid price was in there in bold writing, for all of us to see. It was agreed that the brotherhood would put £1000 each into a pool, so we could purchase the said stock and then spread the word, once we were fully set.

£1000 in the 80s would be worth around $7500 today – a good chunk of money for a young broker. Everything went to plan beautifully as word spread around the city and our ‘horse’ was looking like Phar Lap, nicely placed coming round the corner.

Sure enough, a week later the stock went into a trading halt and that afternoon the air was filled with alcohol induced tales of dream holidays and dream dinner dates with the prettiest girls in the office. Life was good and the late-comers had managed to join the party. Or so we thought, as the stock never actually came out of its trading halt.

The Fix Is In

The company’s shares never ever traded again as three days after the trading halt was called the next announcement was that the company directors had appointed administrators. We lost all of our money on a ‘dead cert’ and even more on flashy holiday deposits.

We all wanted answers and Shuffle Shoes was put on notice.

At a soberish post-mortem of the situation, we found out that little Jimmy was shuffling a bit too fast on the day of the discovery and had tripped over at the entrance to the Stock Exchange, where he noticed the three “confidential” pages when he picked himself up from the floor. Until now, we had all presumed he had discovered them in his bag of documents.

It turned out that the real insiders had deliberately placed false and very well forged papers at the entrance to the Stock Exchange, knowing that they would be discovered by mugs like us, thus giving the real insiders the ability to offload their positions, into a rising volume, rocket fuelled share price while we all piled in. We had been duped by a very carefully and well thought out plan.

And that ladies and gentlemen, is how I got caught with my first and last (Scout’s honour) attempt at insider trading.

Next week I have been asked to touch on the art of short selling and the skills and signals needed to pull off a successful one.

Chefs Reveal The Restaurant Red Flags Australian Diners Really Need To Know
Chefs Reveal The Restaurant Red Flags Australian Diners Really Need To Know

Chefs hold a privileged position in society that no-one but the most disgruntled waiters and the Australian Government dare to question. But while they pride themselves on plating drool-worthy dishes by day, by night the chefs of Reddit hop online to reveal kitchen secrets that the public really ought to know.

Cue: the recent thread, “Chefs, what red flags should people look out for when they go out to eat?”, which is now trending on Reddit due to the saucy insights it offers into the world of hospitality. Intrigued? These are the secret signs that can warn you whether a restaurant is good or bad, according to the chefs of Reddit.

Low Prices

We’ll begin with the obvious: “A $4 steak is not a good steak.”

Employees Who Argue With You

One Reddit chef posted, “If employees try to argue with you about food quality in order to dissuade you from sending something under cooked back, just leave.” Solid advice. Why?

“It means they have a cook who can’t take criticism and your chances (of) getting a sneezer are greatly increased.”

Employees Who Argue With You… & Won’t Back Down

One tale from another Reddit user illustrates this perfectly: “Back when my husband and I were dating, we went to a Thai restaurant. Ordered broccoli and noodles and when the dish arrived, we saw there were lots of black specs all over. Looked closer and they were aphids.”

“Grossed out, we called the waiter over. He took a look and tried to argue with us that it was black pepper, not aphids. Dude, there were obvious legs and wings! He wouldn’t budge so we walked out and never went back.”

Weird Decor

Other chefs offered up simpler warning signs.

“Dirty stained carpets.”

Excessive Noise

As one chef points out, “Loud restaurants are becoming a major problem, so much so (that) a New York food critic has started including dB readings in his reviews.” While a bit of chatter is the sign of a place with good ambience, a deafening din is… well… a deafening din. Endure at your own risk.

Waiters Who Don’t Know Where Your Food Was Sourced

According to one Reddit user, another restaurant red flag is when the waitstaff can’t tell you where the food comes from.

“Ask where your oysters come from. If they don’t know, you don’t want them.”

Staff That Argue With Each Other

“The biggest thing to keep an eye on,” another commenter added, “Is the staff.” If there are pissed off people, he goes on to say, “Get out as fast as you can.” Similarly, if everyone is “kinda apathetic”, that’s another cue to leave.

On the other hand, “If people seem genuinely good with being there — even if it’s busy or if there’s playful ragging going on, that’s where you want to be. The better the staff gets along, the better everything in the place runs.”
