Here's How Easy It Is To Dress Cool With Affordable Fashion Basics
Here's How Easy It Is To Dress Cool With Affordable Fashion Basics

Getting dressed should never be an ordeal, said almost every guy, ever. No one wants to agonise in front of a mirror for hours, or be the unfortunate soul that cops a hard time for taking longer than his better half to get ready. That’s why a solid understanding of the basics is important. And it works in our favour, gents – our wardrobe doesn’t change much year to year (fashion shows don’t count). The staples have been the staples for a bloody long time. Best of all, they’re not going anywhere. We’ve collected what we believe are the top ten wardrobe basics that every guy should try to include in the rotation at some stage. They’re enviably cheap, won’t go out of style, and for the most part can be bought from your desk

Polo Ralph Lauren Basic Tee

You can always count on Ralph
The basic white tee is a wardrobe fundamental with which every guy should be readily familiar. Worn by the greats – Paul Newman, James Dean, McQueen – and never subject to the fickle cycles of high fashion, the white tee flatters everyone and works in every setting.Made from 100% breathable cotton, the Ralph Lauren white tee isn’t sprayed-on-skinny, and it’s not so loose that you feel like you’re wearing a paint smock. Buy a few and rotate them evenly – white shirts are usually the first to suffer the ill effects of prolonged wear. Although the staple plain white is our pick, Ralph also do these in a variety of other colours.BUY $65

Country Road V Neck Knit

Keeping the chills at bay without burning a hole in your pocket
Knitwear isn’t just for the old guys; you need something for those crisp autumnal mornings where a jacket is overkill but a shirt on its lonesome is a risky move. These V-neck sweaters by Country Road are versatile enough for corporate or casual wear – they look just as good with a shirt and tie as they do with jeans and a t-shirt.They’re also made from merino wool, promising superior breathability and a soft texture. A navy or burgundy is a solid choice for winter and with the right treatment, should be something you can wear for more than a couple of seasons (just don’t wear it with nothing underneath in any circumstance).BUY $99

ASOS Crewneck Knit

Join the timeless crew
Originally something you’d wear on the couch or to the track, crewnecks have graduated from sportswear apparel to the big leagues of menswear. Crewnecks might not come to mind for work tailoring, but you would be cheerfully surprised to see how comfortably these can go with an oxford shirt, chinos, and chelsea boots for suit-free work attire. Again, the staple colours are at play here – navy and grey – but it’s worth getting a few different tones to ensure you’re not the most boring bloke in the office.BUY $70

Adidas Originals Stan Smiths

The signature white sneaker that’s also affordable
Popular among every demographic from broke uni students to the bold and insta-famous, the Adidas Stan Smith sneaker has emerged as a staple footwear choice that can be worn for any sartorial contingency. Stan Smiths can run the gamut alongside shorts and a tee, to jeans and a button-down. But if you’re feeling brave, try pairing these with a casual cotton-linen suit in summer. They’ll run you a touch over one hundred dollars – by no means a hefty sum for something you can sneak into every outfit combination.BUY $100

Burton Menswear/ASOS Navy Blazer

Always bet on classic navy
A quick look across the menswear blogosphere would demonstrate the consensus that a navy blazer still deserves its place as the key fundamental in the male wardrobe.  This Burton navy blazer can go anywhere, from casual workplaces or drinks in town. Most importantly, it’s never at risk of being one of those things at the back of the wardrobe that makes you wonder just what you were thinking at the time of purchase. If you’re a lazy dresser, all this jacket takes are cream chinos, loafers, and a white tee to finish an outfit. But there’s nothing wrong with incorporating a tie and smarter pants if you’ve got somebody to impress. Don’t worry, gents – while it says slim-fit on the tag, it won’t make you regret the pre-Uber burritos you’ve been sneaking in at the end of a big one.BUY $129

Nudie Slim Jeans

Go nude without dropping your style
Denim powerhouse Nudie Jeans have an impeccable reputation for workmanship and product quality, and it’s for this reason that we selected them for our denim of choice over a bunch of solid competitors. Nudies fit the description for most preferences – slim, skinny, or nothing remotely tapered – and produce everything from 100% organic cotton, with a regularly-audited and fully accountable production process.Another distinctive bonus from the guys at Nudie is their garment repair service. They have a bunch of shops dotted around the world that can restitch embarrassing crotch tears and frays and return your Nudies good as new. Best of all, it’s free.$120

Brooks Brothers Button-Down Shirt

An American classic
Although firmly entrenched in preppy lore, Brooks Brothers have something to suit the lifestyle of most guys (even those of us too broke to holiday in the Hamptons). The button-down shirt is a wardrobe essential, whether it’s for a last-minute risky Tinder matchup or suit-free Friday in the office. Our house pick is a pale blue. Made from American Supima cotton in a slim (but not outrageously so) cut, this option can go with smart pants and a blazer, or with shorts and boat loafers in summer.BUY $169

Polo Ralph Lauren Reversible Belt

The quiet achiever
We all know the rule: match the belt to your shoes. But the other rule – that you need a separate belt for each pair of stompers – no longer applies. With a plain silver buckle and a reversibility feature – one side black, the other brown –  you can adopt this Polo Ralph Lauren belt as a mainstay accessory with your weekday tailoring and recreational kit. It’s unpretentious, classic, and an absolute steal given the fact you’re essentially getting two belts in one hit.BUY $136

Invisible Socks

More important than you think
The controversial man-ankle thing still hasn’t gone away (to the collective groans of old men and tradies everywhere). If you’re onboard with the look, but like most normal people have a sense of hygiene, you’ll probably want to invest in invisible socks. These are great in summer when linen shorts are dominating the wardrobe, and even in cooler months when you’ve finally decided to grow a pair and wear your cropped ‘Italian style’ pants to the office. Just make sure to buy a couple more pairs than you need – they don’t have a long life and manky socks will kill what little game you have left.BUY $30

Daniel Wellington Watch

The premiere affordable watch
If you’ve surveyed the turf on social media, chances are you’ve seen someone’s pasty wrist with a Daniel Wellington on it, next to their avocado latte and copy of the Monocle. The D.W. look embraces Scandinavian understatement, with a minimalist watch face in two sizes (38-40mm). With multiple strap options, you can wear a D.W. across a range of formal and casual settings.A chocolate brown strap is perfect for work or a night on the tiles, and the preppy NATO straps finish off a casual outfit for the Sunday session that’s just a little too dangerous for your Submariner.BUY $279

Scientists Recommend Wine Over Chocolate This Easter
Scientists Recommend Wine Over Chocolate This Easter

We always knew the antioxidants found in wine were good for your heart, but now research suggests that its polyphenols might also be good for your mouth. And what better time to test the theory than after pounding your gums with a bunch of Easter eggs?Researchers from the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry recently set out to test whether polyphenols—an organic chemical that plants and fruits use to ward off infection by harmful bacteria—could promote health in humans. As reported in Science Daily, the researchers, “Found that the two wine polyphenols in isolation — caffeic and p-coumaric acids — were generally better than the total wine extracts at cutting back on the bacteria’s ability to stick to the cells”.However, although this was a good indication of the hypothesis’ potential to succeed, it was noted that when combined with Streptococcus Dentisani—an oral probiotic—the polyphenols were even better at fending off the pathogenic bacteria. So there you have it: an excuse to drink wine instead (or as well as), eating chocolate.RELATED: Cool Sydney Wine Bars You Need To Try

Relationship Experts Say It's Healthy To Follow Models On Instagram
Relationship Experts Say It's Healthy To Follow Models On Instagram

Instagram is a relationship-minefield second only to the second date. From middle-aged Sydney Morning Herald journalists getting sprung for liking photos of Emily Ratajkowski, to Chainsmokers star Alex Pall getting (allegedly) exposed for cheating on his girlfriend via her Insta-story, no-one’s immune. And that’s not to mention the thousands upon thousands of guys who are forced to perform a newsfeed spring-clean each year when they start going out with someone who’s favourite hobby is forensic social-media espionage. However, in case you missed it, there’s also been a jab of valencia-filtered light: Cosmo relationship expert, Logan Hill. When asked, “Why does my boyfriend follow so many Instagram models?”, he replied, “A young guy’s internet history is not a place anyone should spend time. Particularly his girlfriend. You found ‘lots of butt pages.’ But what did you think you would find when you butted in to his computer? No butts? No ifs ands, or buts — you knew there would be butts.”He argues it’s perfectly natural for both guys and gals to fantasise, saying, “The difference between the rest of human history and this current moment is that before, there wasn’t a digital record of guy’s fantasies or idle thoughts when those thoughts were focused on Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot or even early Madonna.”

“When we let ourselves follow flights of imagination (generally, a healthy thing to do), we now leave digital trails behind. This is new territory. But whether or not there’s digital evidence, men and women have got to accept that their partners (men or women) occasionally and even often think about other people.”

Korin Miller, from Women’s Health, makes a similar point on fantasies, saying, “There can be a serious thrill in exploring them solo—provided, of course, it doesn’t compromise your relationship.”Of course, there’s a difference between fantasy and obsession, but we’ll let you be the judge…

Napping In Shopping Centers Is Becoming A Thing For Australian Men
Napping In Shopping Centers Is Becoming A Thing For Australian Men

When you’re tired or bored it’s tempting to let infantile instincts come to the fore. However, unless you’re less than 3 years of age, drooling all over yourself semi-consciously isn’t cute. So why do we keep seeing men hunched-over (or head lolled-back—take your pick), snoring-up shopping centres all over the country? It used to be limited to the abandoned-boyfriend armchairs outside of H&M changing rooms—but seems to be spreading. And apart from being a crime-against-Westfield, it reveals a lot about your health.Dr Moira Junge, a sleep psychologist from the Sleep Health Foundation who regularly treats people with insomnia, told D’Marge:

“The person napping in a shopping centre would either have not had enough sleep due to lifestyle choices, or be affected by drugs or medication, or have a sleep disorder. The best sleep is the one that you have in one chunk and it is important for us to prioritise our sleep and seek help if we aren’t getting enough.”

However, although a shopping centre isn’t the place to do it, Dr Junge also pointed out that a nap of less than 30 mins is beneficial, as long as it’s, “A long time before you go to bed for your major sleep period”. She then added, “Our primitive ancestors did not sleep in one big chunk, they slept in different periods throughout the 24 hour day; they were effective nappers”. That said, when asked if she would ever sleep in a shopping center she had this to say; “I would wait until I was in an appropriate place. People who have excessive daytime sleepiness need to address if they are getting enough sleep, or if they may have an underlying sleep disorder that needs to be addressed and treated.”So if you’re guilty of enjoying the odd public siesta, you have three options: sleep longer at night, plan your day better (i.e. don’t go shopping in the middle of the afternoon) or simply: harden up. As our sleep specialist says:

“A small percentage of the population who have a sleep disorder need to nap throughout the day, and the general population may have a sleepy period in the afternoon, but mostly should be able to resist the urge to nap”

Also, according to Rosemary Clancy, a clinical psychologist at the Sydney Sleep Centre, if you find yourself falling asleep during the day and sleeping long hours at night, you may have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)—a breathing-related sleep disorder—which, “Is rising in the community, because of obesity and diabetes type II frequency increasing in the Australian population.”But tell us: what do you think? Is sleeping in a shopping centre an acceptable way to get over a hangover, or a sign you’ve given up on life?Related: If You’re Going To Sleep At An Airport, This Is How You Do It

H&M's $4.3 Billion Stockpile Crisis Could Be Solved With A Match And Some Gasoline
H&M's $4.3 Billion Stockpile Crisis Could Be Solved With A Match And Some Gasoline

In the world of fashion, where trends change faster than Australia’s attitude towards its cricket team, even a small pile of leftover stock is a cardinal sin. Sure, you can have a sale, but what do you do with what’s left after that?

This is the question Swedish retailer H&M must now face, as its most recent quarterly report revealed on Tuesday that it has $4.3 billion worth of unsold clothes and accessories. Karl-Johan Persson, the company’s CEO, said that this had happened because, “H&M was opening 220 new stores and expanding its e-commerce operations, and so needed to fill the racks” (reported by the New York Times).

“Critics, however, blamed poor inventory management and underwhelming product offerings, prompting once-loyal shoppers to take their wallets elsewhere”

Over the last 20 years H&M have come a long way; from one women’s retailer near Stockholm to a multinational company of 4, 700 stores. But this latest news, along with last year’s unanticipated quarterly drop in sales—the first in two decades—has raised questions over the company’s ability to navigate changing consumer demands.

The globalisation that enabled H&M to grow so rapidly, is now posing a challenge: as online shopping (and the start-up industry) grows, foot-traffic drops. Generational change also plays a role, with many younger customers choosing to avoid legacy brands, opting for smaller, more underground labels: for whom the barrier to entry (think: building a website, reaching audiences on social media etc.) has been significantly reduced.

Upstart clothing-brands like Showpo (a $30 million dollar empire built off of cheap frocks) have taken advantage of this. In response H&M must explore its options—because the strategy of burning products it cannot sell to create energy is hardly efficient. It could look to Billabong who, upon encountering a massive decline in sales (once its target audience had grown up, back in the early 2000’s), created RVCA, a ‘brand within a brand’, which is popular with younger customers—many of whom have no idea their snapbacks were made by the same company who ‘fashioned’ their dad’s daggy t-shirts and sandals.

Another reason for H&M’s decline in profit could be this: although they paint themselves socially progressive, customers have criticised the company for paying lip-service to the feminist ideals it uses to promote its products (see: Global Hobo’s, “Don’t Fall For The New H&M Campaign”).

At the moment though, as reported by Business Insider, H&M are planning to deal with the stockpile by launching a unique off-price store: instead of offering discounted designer products (like most off-price retailers), H&M will be offering its own products at a discount.

Maserati Levante Trofeo Is The Practical 300km/h SUV With Ferrari Power
Maserati Levante Trofeo Is The Practical 300km/h SUV With Ferrari Power

“It’s proof that when you play with the elements you end up in a storm,” says Maserati CEO Tim Kuniskis.

And what a storm the new Maserati Levante Trofeo is. With a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 borrowed from the prancing horse’s HQ in Maranello, the luxury Italian SUV can now hit 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds before maxing out at a modest 300km/h. You know, the sort of bragging rights any designated family driver needs.

The Ferrari engine delivers 440kW of power to all four wheels along with 730Nm of torque – a feat which earns the title of having the most power-per-litre than any other engine ever installed in a Maserati.

“In the case of Trofeo, the engineers and designers in Modena knew that the driveline parameters were more than able to cope with additional power and they also knew that Maserati had access to the finest engines on earth,” said Kuniskis.

“So, they were up to the challenge of making the finest luxury SUV also one of the fastest.”

It’s not just the power that’s the focus of the new top-of-the-range Trofeo though. The chassis has also been fine tuned to provide a 50:50 weight balance which makes for superb handling on milk runs. There’s even a Corsa (race) mode and launch control built in so that drivers will never have to answer that age old question of “Are we there yet?”

The interior meanwhile sees lashings of gorgeous cross-stitched and naturally ageing leather in a choice of either black, red or tan. And let’s not forget the carbon fibre trimming which extends from the interior right through to the exterior body via a front lip spoiler and side skirts (limited launch edition only). Big 22-inch wheels finished in matte black and matte black body paint also makes up this limited edition model.

There’s even a legitimate Off-Road mode that Maserati installed just to troll pass the SUV category.

Keen? Maserati says they will only be building a “small number” of the models without a final figure. Owners do get a plaque featuring their name and serial number though.

There’s no pricing and availability yet but expect it to fall somewhere in the region of Lamborghini’s most pointless SUV.

Boeing First 787-10 Dreamliner For Singapore Airlines Is Next Level Air Travel
Boeing First 787-10 Dreamliner For Singapore Airlines Is Next Level Air Travel

The final Dreamliner has arrived. Boeing celebrated the delivery of its newest, biggest 787 to Singapore Airlines’ South Carolina Factory on Sunday where, according to Eyewitness Newsthe occasion took place in front of a crowd of employees and airline officials—with rock and roll playing in the background.

Singapore Airlines plan to use the 787-10 for regional flights of up to 8 hours, such as to Osaka, Japan. CEO Goh Choon Phong, as reported by Stuff NZ, said:

“It is an honour for us to be the world’s first airline to take delivery of this amazing new aircraft”

This new version of the Dreamliner is basically a bigger version of the 787-9, measuring 18ft longer, and able to seat 330 passengers (compared to the 787-9’s 290 passengers). It is worth $326 million, and completes the 787 range, which began with the 787-8 in 2011. According to Eyewitness News, all three:

“Boast carbon-composite fabrication materials, fuel efficiency and new state-of-the-air filtration systems with higher levels of humidity in the air for long-distance flight”

Earlier today the jet touched down in Changi airport, having made its way from the US.

The new 787-10 currently accounts for 13% of orders for the range, however the 787-9 remains the most popular, competing predominantly with the European company Airbus’s new-gen carbon-composite A350—a jet of similar carrying capacity and range.

Scientists May Have Found A Way To Preserve Your Memories After Death
Scientists May Have Found A Way To Preserve Your Memories After Death

“Our mission is to preserve your brain well enough to keep all its memories intact”

The start-up Nectome recently unveiled their controversial plan to create a mind-uploading service, which is, according to the MIT Technology Review, “100% fatal”. The idea being, for $10, 000, they preserve your brain, you die—then you watch on from beyond the grave, hoping  they one day develop the technology to make use of your cerebral matter…

There’s no proof memories can be retrieved from an embalmed-brain; but that hasn’t stopped 25 people from joining the waitlist. The procedure proposed is similar to that of existing euthanasia practices, with added aim of preserving their brain. As reported by The MIT Technology Review:

“The Nectome team demonstrated the seriousness of its intentions starting this January, when McIntyre, McCanna, and a pathologist they’d hired spent several weeks camped out at an Airbnb in Portland, Oregon, waiting to purchase a freshly deceased body”

The reason they’ve received so much attention (apart from the topic lending itself to click-bait headlines), is because in 2017 they won the Brain Preservation Foundation’s Small Mammal prize, for preserving every synaptic structure in a rabbit brain. This means people are taking them seriously when they talk about their next goal, which is to, “(Develop) a robust preservation protocol for human use, and demonstrate(s) perfect connectome preservation in a human brain in a research context”.

They talk big game about connectomes, synapses and unlocking a new era of neuroscience. However, the problem, according to Jens Foell (a neuroscientist at Florida State University), is that an embalmed brain would not contain, “The whole story,” of the information it processed whilst alive (reported by Live Science).

“Cell firing behaviour is determined by other things, including processes within the cells that are determined by proteins that are much smaller than synapses (and some of them are short-lived)”

This means that even if Nectome manage to perfectly map and preserve the human brain, the idea that this would enable us to recreate its memories or access the information it once held, is tenuous at best and a morbid-waste-of-money at worst.

Tellingly, as computational neuroscientist Sam Gershmn points out, if we can’t recreate the memories of a simple creature like the C Elegans (a type of roundworm), whose connectome we’ve known for more than 10 years, it’s unlikely such information will help us achieve this particular goal in humans.

That’s not to say the technology isn’t useful—just that expecting it to produce memories is a bit far fetched.

Maserati Brings 'A Once In A Lifetime Gathering' To Sydney's Opera House
Maserati Brings 'A Once In A Lifetime Gathering' To Sydney's Opera House

Flashing tyres, refined sounds, powerful colours: the first ever Maserati owners’ club global gathering came to an end yesterday, the display taking place overnight at the Sydney Opera House.

This comes after a week long tour, where millions of dollars worth of rare and unique Maseratis have been driven through country Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.

John Gove, president of the Maserati owners club, said in a press release, “This will be a once in a life time chance to see many of these cars as they have been brought to Australia specifically for this event.”

“The good news is they won’t be stuck in an exhibition hall, away from the public. They will be doing what Maseratis do best – driving along the roads accompanied by the glorious sound all Maseratis make. In addition, we will have three displays where the public can get a close look at these magnificent machines and talk to their owners.”

He added.

Just about every well-known Maserati, from the 1956 150S, to the latest range were on display. This modern fleet launched less than a month ago, including the new Ferrari-engined Maserati Levante S, the new 2018 Maserati sports cars, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio, as well as the 2018 Maserati Quattroporte and 2018 Maserati Ghibli.

Imagine that tearing up the great ocean road… Eighth wonder of the world?

Australia has played a key role in Maserati’s history; Maseratis have been raced in Australia, as well as by Aussies abroad—so the gathering is something of a recognition of this.
