‘Flaming Waterfall’ In Yosemite Leaves Visitors Stunned

Watch Yosemite’s stunning ‘firefalls’ in the video below.

There have been a lot of incidents lately which have left tourists stunned. From the woman who sparked up a cigarette on a flight to the notion that one could have the gall to complain about their luxury overwater Maldives villa, it’s been a doozy of a few months.

Today the stupefaction continues with the realisation, among many, that there is an incredible spot in Yosemite where you can watch water ‘turn into lava’ as it falls down a cliff. The only catch? It doesn’t really turn into lava. It just appears to.

In any case, Horsetail Falls’ rare ‘firefall’ show is certainly worth adding to your bucket list, being a dramatic incident that only a lucky few get to see, as it only happens when conditions are perfect.

According to nps.gov, “Horsetail Fall flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. This small waterfall usually flows only during winter and is easy to miss.” That’s just the water though. To see the water (appear to) turn into a “firefall” you need to visit on a clear evening in mid to late February.

“On rare occasions during mid-to-late February, it can glow orange when it’s backlit by sunset,” nps.gov states.

“This unique lighting effect happens only on evenings with a clear sky when the waterfall is flowing. Even some haze or minor cloudiness can greatly diminish or eliminate the effect. Although entirely natural, the phenomenon is reminiscent of the human-caused Firefall that historically occurred from Glacier Point,” (nps.gov).

Though this usually only happens in February, CNN reports that it happened unexpectedly this week, delighting tourists.

CNN reported over the weekend: “Some visitors to Yosemite National Park in California this week were delighted to see a glowing ribbon of water that looked like molten lava cascade down Horsetail Fall on El Capitan – a phenomenon known as a ‘firefall.’ Horsetail Fall doesn’t usually flow at this time of year, but the recent severe storms that swept through the area brought it surging back to life.”

CNN’s post was met with comments from followers like: “Mother nature reminding us of her magic” and “amazing.”

Recent posts under the ‘horsetailfalls’ geotag, by Instagram users like @snoshark, provide further testimony to the falls coming alive in October, and the amazement it inspired.

Instagram user @snoshark yesterday wrote: “October has put on quite a show! Storms, Snow and Firefalls! Just look at that orange glow. Happy Halloween.”

“Yosemite put on another magical show last night with Firefalls – the event that supposedly occurs only in February when the sunlight travels through the other side of El Capitan and hits the Horsetail Falls at a very specific angle to light up the waterfalls and the granite on fire.”

“I can’t imagine how lucky I was to witness this event this time of the year. 40+ inches of snow in the high elevations really brings the Horsetail Fall back to life.”

For those interesting in seeing it for themselves, Nps.gov states: “Due to the popularity of the event, restrictions are in effect during mid- to late February each year (February 12 through 28 in 2021) daily from noon to 7 pm. (This has been extended from February 24 to February 28.) To view Horsetail Fall, park at Yosemite Falls parking (just west of Yosemite Valley Lodge) and walk 1.5 miles (each way) to the viewing area near El Capitan Picnic Area.”

You Can Hate Ben Simmons, But You Can’t Hate His New $2 Million Porsche
You Can Hate Ben Simmons, But You Can’t Hate His New $2 Million Porsche

Ben Simmons isn’t doing himself many favours right now.

Once the golden child of Australian basketball, the 25-year-old Melburnian is now one of basketball’s most maligned figures. First, he chose not to play for his country at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, choosing instead to focus on ‘skill development’ after his lacklustre performance for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2021 NBA playoff.

Now, he’s attracted criticism for his decision to try and leave the 76ers despite four years left on his contract – the star deliberately phoning it in during practice sessions and even putting his US$3.6 million Philadelphia mansion on the market. His behaviour isn’t endearing him to anyone right now… But at least he’s got good taste in cars.

Earlier in September, Simmons added yet another high-end automobile to his already expansive collection: a Porsche 918 Spyder. While it might not be the most career-savvy move to drop over $2 million on a rare and exotic car whilst your performance has been lacking, choosing a 918 shows his taste isn’t lacking, at least.

A similar Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package to Simmons’. This car has a tan leather interior, Simmons’ has a black leather interior (with lime green highlights). Image: RM Sotheby’s

The 918 is an incredibly unusual and rare car. A plug-in hybrid convertible powered by a 4.6L V8 in conjunction with two electric motors, it makes 652kW and 1,280Nm of torque, and was independently verified by Car and Driver of doing 0-60mph in a blistering 2.1sec. This makes it one of the fastest cars on the planet, and indeed it used to be the fastest until the Tesla Model S Plaid broke its record earlier this year.

RELATED: I Drove Porsche’s Insane New Electric Car. It Blew My Mind

Simmons’ model also features the desirable ‘Weissach Package’, an optional weight-saving and aerodynamics package that includes distinct magnesium wheels and an extended rear diffuser; replacing the roof and other body components with carbon fibre parts, and interior parts covered in Alcantara instead of leather (although Simmons’ seems to have a standard leather interior).

Porsche only made nine hundred and eighteen 918s between 2013 and 2015, and their headline-snatching performance means they’re hard to come by, not only because they’re in demand but because that insane speed has meant more than a few have seen an untimely demise. They originally retailed for US$845,000 but prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

Simmons isn’t the only NBA player to own a 918, either. LeBron James also owns one, although LeBron’s doesn’t have the same Weissach Package that Simmons’ one does. So yes, criticise Simmons all you like, but you can’t criticise his choice in wheels.

Watch the Tesla Model S Plaid beat the Porsche 918 Spyder’s 0-60 time below.

The 918 isn’t the only expensive car in Simmons’ garage – far from it. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ also owns two Ferrari 488s (a Spider and a Pista), a Lamborghini Urus, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Shelby F-150 Super Snake, among other luxe rides.

He even bought his brother a brand-new Audi SQ8 SUV as a birthday present earlier this year. Must be nice.

Australians No Longer Afraid To Ask For This Workplace Essential
Australians No Longer Afraid To Ask For This Workplace Essential

For many, it’s been a bit of an adjustment returning to ‘business as usual’ after spending so long working from home.

On the one hand, it’s been nice to just roll straight out of bed into a Zoom meeting (we’ve all done it). On the other hand, many Australian professionals have found that this erosion of our work-life boundaries has seriously impacted not only our productivity but also our mental health.

Now, data has emerged that as we’re returning to our offices and grappling with all the upheaval of the last two years, our priorities and expectations around workplace conditions have changed dramatically – especially when it comes to mental health and work-life balance.

A recent survey conducted by leading Australian employment marketplace SEEK has revealed that while around 63% of respondents now feel it is extremely important to maintain work-life boundaries, only around 56% of employers actually consider the importance of work-life boundaries. More pertinently, while 60% of respondents believe it is their employer’s responsibility to support their mental health, 24% say they have no mental health support at work. Other insights include that only:

  • 56% of those surveyed have regular workload reviews at work
  • 55% have flexible and remote working arrangements.
  • 43% encourage employees to switch off computers/work phones at the end of the day and
  • 35% reinforce the benefit of getting outside for exercise.

SEEK’s data suggests that there’s a big gap between what Aussie employees increasingly expect when it comes to employers approaching mental health / work-life balance issues in the workplace, and what employers are actually offering or discussing.

We spoke with SEEK’s Resident Psychologist Sabina Read about this data, as well as about what steps employers should take to try and address this growing ‘expectation gap’. Her take?

“Well-meaning employers often make sweeping, and even generous, offerings assuming they equate with balance in meaningful ways for their people.”

“However, workforces are not comprised of one homogenous collective, but rather individuals who often have a wisdom and knowing for what helps them perform (and live) at their best.”

“There is no substitute for fostering trust and cultivating opportunities to listen. Some employers are fearful to ask what their staff need most in case they can’t deliver, however, avoiding dialogue won’t dial down employees’ unmet needs and it negates the agency that employees can bring as problem solvers.”

“At the end of the day, both employers and employees are responsible for creating innovative and sustainable work-life boundaries that work.” In short: both employees and employers just need to talk.

While the last two years have been a wake-up call for many of us when it comes to work-life boundaries and balance, some of these concerns are hardly revelatory, says Read – but there have also been positive revelations to have come out of the WFH revolution.

“The idea of finding [that] ‘perfect’ and yet often-elusive work-life balance has been bandied around for years. It assumes the desire and possibility to strike a harmonious balance between the personal and professional domains of life,” she says.

“During the last 18 months, the impact of the pandemic has blurred the lines between work and home… [But] many of us have also reconnected with ourselves and discovered new ways of thinking, feeling, and doing. We’ve learned that working remotely can have many benefits; that flexibility can fuel productivity, and that there’s joy and relief in slowing down and creating space to just be.”

RELATED: ‘More Energy & Better Decisions’: Simple Yet Genius Life Hack You Need To Know

“The reality is that work-life balance is a personal construct rather than a universal destination. If work-life balance is our goal, then work-life boundaries are the road map. We can define better boundaries when we are in tune with our needs, values, and goals. When we have clarity around these, we are more likely to speak with confidence to our leaders and find ways to honour what we need to become our best selves across the professional and personal domains of our life.”

“This is, after all, a win-win for both employees and employers.”

Food for thought indeed.

David Goggins Completes Workout That Could Kill A Man
David Goggins Completes Workout That Could Kill A Man

Watch Goggins sweat it out on the assault bike in the video below.

David Goggins is a man on a mission. A fitness lover, more than a phenomenon, he transformed his life, he says, through sheer hard work, going from being overweight and working in pest control to being a Navy Seal and then an ultra-endurance athlete.

But even someone like him ought to struggle after two hours on an assault bike, you might think (after lasting barely 20 minutes yourself). Well, I hate to break it to you, but you’d be wrong. Goggins took to Instagram on Friday to share an “insane” sounding exercise he just casually does “sometimes.”

As part of a longer Instagram post, Goggins wrote: “I hate showing off but sometimes people just love running their mouths. In a simple conversation with someone, they asked me about working out. So I told him…I told this guy I sometimes go to the gym and get on the assault bike for two hours at 80rpms.”

“While this sounds absolutely insane to most people, this is just the kind of shit I do. This is how far I have pushed my mind and body everyday for the last 20 years therefore I don’t even think it is a big deal.”

“P.S. Before I got on this bike, I was on the stairclimber for 45 minutes at a level 13-14 using no hands to brace myself and then quickly transitioned to the assault bike for an easy 30 minutes between 81-85 rpms. Burned 637 calories on the assault bike in that 30 minutes so do the math!”

The video seemed to have been inspired by a boxer, who apparently claimed to be able to match Goggins’ furious workouts.

“You Don’t Know Me, Son!” Goggins began the post. “I am only talking to one person here and he knows who he is- but, it is all fun and games, KINDA!!!!”

“A lot of people talk mad shit out here who claim to be motivators. This is why I keep the hardest shit I do to myself because it may seem unbelievable or exaggerated to a lot of people. I back all my shit up with proof.”

“Don’t ever question the truth behind what I say I do and my ability to go the distance. You will end up in severe cardiac arrest! So by all means, I can not wait to have you beside me on an assault bike in the near future. It will be a lesson you will never, ever forget. This is not a joke my friend, this is my life.”

This isn’t the first time Goggins has shared workout motivation and advice from the seat of a bicycle, or gym bike, as you can see below.

The assault bike is the “it” bike for low-impact, high-output cardio exercise, and is commonly known in Crossfit and F45 circles as an instrument of torture (and ego-driven competition).

Some even call it the “devil’s bicycle.” As Trifecta puts it: “No matter how long you spend on the Assault bike, one thing is true of athletes of all ages, fitness levels and experience – it sucks.”

They add four tips for those wanting to improve their assault bike performance: consider your height, adjust accordingly, create a rhythm and work efficiently.

Got it? Good. Now go take some souls

Watches of Switzerland’s New Campaign Reminds Us Of Why We Love Watches
Watches of Switzerland’s New Campaign Reminds Us Of Why We Love Watches

It’s incredibly difficult to explain to someone who’s not into watches just what attracts you to these tiny mechanical marvels. In this age where smartphones and smartwatches are everywhere – where you don’t need a watch to tell the time easily anymore – the humble watch seems like an anachronism.

But a watch is more than just a time-telling tool; a simple instrument. Not only are watches like living, breathing pieces of art, but they’re also a beautiful way of celebrating life’s achievements, expressing oneself, and ultimately, they’re an expression of a special type of devotion.

As watch fans, we sometimes forget that. That’s why Watches of Switzerland’s latest campaign is so brilliant: it reminds us of why we got into watches in the first place, as well as eloquently makes the case for watches even in this fast-paced digital age.

The leading Australian luxury watch boutique retailer has teamed up with acclaimed director and photographer Matsu as well as the musical virtuoso Brian Kruger on a touching new campaign titled A Devotion to the Extraordinary, which celebrates the extraordinary people who walk through their doors.

On wrist: the new IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch 43 (ref. IW329301). Read more about this cool new release here.

It’s a unique campaign inasmuch as it’s only tangentially about watches: really, it’s about how successful people from all walks of life are united by their common passion for watches. Watches aren’t just a symbol of achievement, they’re a symbol of those who think differently; aren’t satisfied with complacency; who want to achieve even more. We love watches not only for what they are, but what they represent.

“The new campaign is all about the people who make our family business such an amazing organisation,” observes Sam van der Griend, the Managing Director of Watches of Switzerland.

“We wanted to create something that is genuine and authentic; that recognises our clients for the extraordinary people they are, and the devotion our staff show them by providing the highly regarded level of customer service and recognition they deserve.

You can explore the dazzling new story, as well as discover Watches of Switzerland’s impressive range of luxury timepieces, at their online boutique here.

‘Mile High Club’: Passenger Caught Doing The Unthinkable During Landing
‘Mile High Club’: Passenger Caught Doing The Unthinkable During Landing

A video of a passenger on what is speculated to be a Southwest, Alaska or Spirit Airlines flight has caused uproar on Instagram. That video? Footage has emerged of a man appearing to give himself a tattoo, with a cordless tattoo gun, mid-flight.

How very Spirit Airlines, many thought, commenting as much underneath the video of the act (see: “Spirit Airlines checking in” and “This must be on a Spirit flight”).

Another user, underneath Passenger Shaming’s reposting of the video, said they were concerned not just about the risk the passenger was posing to himself, but to the hygiene of the plane.

“I’m just thinking of the tiny blood microspatters all over that tray,” they wrote.

“Dude isn’t even wearing gloves!”

Watch the man (allegedly) giving himself a tattoo on a plane in the video below.

Another user commented: “Oooooof. Hepatitis Highway.”

“I’m constantly going to wonder what in AF happened in the seat before me now.”

Others had even bigger questions, like: “Would that be considered as a weapon?” and “How did they manage to get the tattoo’s equipment inside of it?”

Others were even stronger in their condemnation. One wrote: “Some people need to just stay home.” Another said: “I wish ppl would just go to sleep and shut up on flights.”

Even more succinctly, one wrote: “I hate it.”

It didn’t end there. Over on Instagram account @suckytattoos (where the video originated), some choice comments included: “Can’t wait to catch a blood disease next time I fly spirit,” and“Mile high tattoo club.”

“What in the hep C is this,” asked another.

Tattoo artist @girlknewyork Mira Mariah admitted she had thought about doing a similar thing, commenting: “As soon as I got the new cordless I thought to myself ‘u can tattoo on jets now’.”

Another tattoo artist was less impressed, writing: “and now probably he fucks it up for all of us to have tattoo machine in our hand luggage.”

There you have it – certainly not something you see every day. This even rivals the time a passenger decided to do a spot of yoga mid flight.

Orlando Bloom’s Porsche Addiction Takes Dramatic Turn
Orlando Bloom’s Porsche Addiction Takes Dramatic Turn

Orlando Bloom is one of the 21st Century’s most recognisable actors, thanks to his starring roles in blockbuster film franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Pirates Of The Caribbean. He might not have starred in any really big films in recent years, but he’s still worth a few lazy million…

So it was surprising to see photos emerge of him last week driving a somewhat modest Porsche (if such a thing exists). Out for dinner at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood last week with his partner Katy Perry as well as with some mates, Bloom was spotted driving a 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS – superficially, not a very surprising car for him to drive, until you sit down and think about it for a second.

Generally speaking, celebrities tend to buy the top-spec or trim level of a car. If you’re worth millions, why buy the base model? Except that the Carrera 4 GTS is neither the base model nor the top-flight model: it’s very much a middle-of-the-pack specification.

Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but it’s just a bit of a weird trim level for a celeb to opt for. Why didn’t he just get the Turbo, or the 911 R, or the GT3? He can certainly afford it.

L-R: Bloom with his Cayenne, and then again with his classic 911. Images: Twitter

Maybe it’s because he’s a real Porsche enthusiast, and he’s all about quantity over quality (not that the Carrera 4 GTS is by any stretch not a quality car). Bloom also owns a Porsche Cayenne, as well as a classic 911.

He was also spotted late last year eyeing off a stunning green 1973 Porsche 911 RSR, which fellow celeb Ellen DeGeneres was also spotted checking out, The Daily Mail reports. It’s not clear whether either star ended up buying the rare German sports car, but considering Bloom’s blooming Porsche addiction, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he ended up pulling the trigger on the thing.

Ah, the lifestyles of the rich and the famous… It would be nice to have a fleet of Porsches, hey?

Speaking of Porsche, check out their bonkers new concept car, the all-electric Mission R, below.

Stunning Photo Shows How Far Workplace Safety Has Come In Australia
Stunning Photo Shows How Far Workplace Safety Has Come In Australia

Today, every single work environment needs to abide by various workplace health and safety laws, not only for employees but for customers, visitors and anyone else who steps foot on the business premises. Although, while it is the businesses’ and the owners’ obligation to instil workplace health and safety measures, it’s also down to the individual employees to follow them.

Each Australian state has its own workplace health and safety laws that businesses need to follow, so what might be an obligation in New South Wales, for example, may not necessarily be the case in South Australia.

But on the whole, what is incredibly apparent, is just how far workplace health and safety has come over the years in Australia, as one photo recently posted to The Sydney Morning Herald Archives Instagram account perfectly demonstrates.

The image in question shows Peter McCormack – referred to as a “dogman” – being lifted up over the streets of Sydney, as he works on the £2 million Royal Assurance Building on Bent Street, in 1959. It’s been difficult to discern what the Royal Assurance building is used for today if it indeed is still standing, as records regarding its presence in the Australian city are thin on the ground.

A post shared by @smharchives

Regardless, we’re not here for a history of Sydney’s architecture. What we’re interested in is the way in which Mr McCormack is being lifted high above Sydney’s streets.

Clearly long before the days of strict health and safety laws, Peter appears to only be connected to the crane’s chain attachment by way of standing on some hooks. He’s also holding on for dear life – although admittedly, he looks remarkably calm about the whole affair – on both the chain on the crane and a secondary rope.

You’ll also notice there isn’t a hard hat in sight, nor does he even seem to be wearing steel-toe capped boots. It beggars belief that a) this was the customary approach to scaling high-rise buildings and b) someone like Peter was even willing to be airlifted in such a manner.

These days, virtually every minute aspect of a construction site – or any business for that matter – falls under the scrutinous eye of health and safety law. Hell, you can’t even get up onto someone shoulders at a nightclub or festival without a member of security telling you to get down. The aforementioned hard hats and steel-toe cap boots at mandatory, as is high-visibility clothing, or PPE – Personal Protective Equipment – as it is more commonly known.

Harnesses are commonplace too, in the event someone should make a misstep or slip, to prevent them from plummeting to the ground far below. Of course, scaffolding has become just as common within city skylines as birds in the sky, allowing for much safer and easier travel up and down a building’s innards and facade.

Image: Financial Times

An image taken from the construction of the Crown Sydney casino in Barangaroo perfectly demonstrates the measures modern-day construction workers have to abide by during the building of high-rise buildings.

As technologies and building materials constantly evolve, and the imaginations of architects stretch further and further, we’ll no doubt continue to see countless changes made to workplace health and safety legislation. Who knows, one day we may end up comparing the image just above with the methods of a future time, noting drastic differences once again.

‘F*ckbois & Trust Fund Bartenders’: The Sydney Men Women Are Sick Of Dating
‘F*ckbois & Trust Fund Bartenders’: The Sydney Men Women Are Sick Of Dating

Dating is a minefield. Dating in Sydney, Australia, however, is a whole ‘other kettle of fish. Put simply, the city is full of f*ckbois. This has been proven time and time again, with some of the most recent evidence coming from TikTok user Abby Elizabeth, who made others aware of some messages she’d received on dating apps, which included the classic “I won’t tell my girlfriend.”

It’s enough to make the nice guys out there embarrassed (if they weren’t already living in a permanent state of embarrassment).

To offer perhaps a little bit of justification – if it is indeed possible – the dating scene in Sydney has been turned upside down since the arrival of The Spicy Cough, with virtually all singles being required to virtually forego any chance of finding love, and simply try and enjoy the alone time.

The positives from this are that single Australians have used the time to decide what it is they want from a partner, as well as realising life is too short, and that it’s now time to do things in the bedroom that would otherwise be considered taboo.

But the f*ckboi could actually be more of an umbrella term, as opposed to singling out a specific type of Sydney man, as another TikTok video series proves. The videos come courtesy of @racyinaus, or Rachel in Australia, an American expat who now resides Down Under.

In an ongoing series of videos, she describes typical Sydney men women are likely to encounter on their dating travels, none of whom seem like boyfriend or even husband material. We presume her videos are based on personal experience.

If you’re a single woman living in Sydney and reading this, we guarantee you’ll be able to relate to some, if not all of the videos Rachel has posted thus far.

Check out Rachel’s observations of single Sydney men in the video below

She says “the first guy you’ll go out with is a guy that works in ‘commercial real estate’, on the first date he’s going to buy you both a pitcher of something, and he’s going to pick an outside table because he’ll spend the whole time vaping.”

She goes on to reveal another type of Sydney man, “a mid-20s bartender, who somehow manages to live in a ridiculous penthouse in Vaucluse.” Other Sydney singletons that women can expect to meet up with include the “Irish guy who lives in Bondi, with some kind of butt tattoo he really regrets but whips it out the second you ask what it is.” He will also have the “quintessential Irish haircut”, which can be likened to those seen in Peaky Blinders.

We won’t spell out in detail all of the various Sydney stereotypes Rachel lists off, we’ll leave you to enjoy watching the video above. What her videos do bring to light, however, is the fact that these stereotypes do still exist, and that there’s no mention whatsoever of the ‘nice guy’.

A long-held cliché says that ‘nice guys finish last’. DMARGE has previously reported on the story of dating advice columnist and podcaster Jana Hocking, who always found herself going on dates with ‘bad boys’. But an unexpected visit to the hospital, where she was looked after by a rather attentive male doctor, changed her perspective.

RELATED: ‘2021 Has Changed How We Date’: The New Type Of Man Australian Women Now Want

“As someone who has always been the ‘fixer’ as opposed to the one that needs fixing, I took away from this scary hospital moment a new outlook on the ‘good guy.’ Turns out he can be actually pretty darn sexy,” she said.

Sexologist and relationship expert Dr Nikki Goldstein has also previously told DMARGE that nice guys may finally get their chance to shine in a post-Covid world,

“COVID has changed how we date. We have gone from the hookup era to the relationship era. People are wondering when they can get out and travel again and if lockdowns will be the new norm.”

“So, they are also assessing who they want to be locked down with. People don’t necessarily want a bad guy but a guy that will be with them through the hard times and support them through a pandemic… The good guy.”

Of course, unless you make it plain as day that you’re a piece of sh*t in your profile, a woman is unlikely to know whether you’re a good or a bad guy. But let Rachel’s TikTok videos be a warning that women are cottoning on to the predictable games you play.
