Rimowa Opens First Ever Concept Store
Rimowa Opens First Ever Concept Store

Luxury luggage maker Rimowa has just opened the doors to its first ever concept store in the high fashion precinct of London’s Old and New Bond Street.

The new 220 square-metre space draws inspiration from the aviation world and comes complete with a vintage propeller blade as well as arching aluminium sheets to mimic the aeroplanes of old. The internal space is modelled off a plane’s cargo area with the luggage display taking prime seating positions.

Walk on through to the fuselage and guests will be greeted with a replica of the ‘Junkers F13’ aeroplane by Rimowa – the world’s first all metal aeroplane that was built in 1919. The significance of this plane comes in its construction which uses a light and strong alloy called Duralumin. The metal is the same material that Rimowa used to make its first suitcase.

Rimowa’s CEO Dieter Morszeck said that, “there has been such demand for Rimowa in London that I have wanted to open a flagship on New Bond Street for a long time”.

The launch also coincides with Rimowa latest ‘Electronic Tag’ system which allows one’s luggage to be checked in from home with a smartphone.

You Can Soon Have 'Secret Conversations' On Facebook Messenger
You Can Soon Have 'Secret Conversations' On Facebook Messenger

Ah, Facebook Messenger. Once a mere afterthought added to the social media platform for a cool $19 billion and now a bonafide form of communication for users all over the world.

Since mid-2014, the Facebook Messenger app has done quite well in catching up with competitors having added a string of features to the service, including the ability to send money to friends, pull up a voice or video call and even order a private car from inside the app.

In a bid to stay at the top of the leaderboard, last week Facebook announced it would begin testing ‘secret conversations’ inside Messenger, a feature that offers ‘better support about sensitive topics’ with end-to-end encryption meaning messages can only be read from the two devices involved in the conversation.

Whether you’re discussing private information like an illness or health issue with trusted family and friends or you’re sending financial information to someone, these ‘secret conversations’ are intended just for you and one other person and will also allow you to set a timer to control the length of time each message you send remains visible.

“The fact that we have 1.65 billion people on Facebook already makes Messenger the best live, self-updating address book in the world,” Messenger’s head honcho David Marcus said in an interview. “Because of the scale of our network, I feel like we really have a shot at this.”

Marcus is not wrong about the sheer volume of Facebook users. The Messenger app sees more than 900 million regular monthly users, up from 200 million in 2014. In Layman’s Terms, that’s roughly half of all American smartphone owners. That’s a whole lot of GIFS, emojis and conversations to be kept on the down-low.

Mercedes-Benz To Take On Tesla With Electric Sports Car
Mercedes-Benz To Take On Tesla With Electric Sports Car

The unstoppable Tesla juggernaut born from the electric vision of Elon Musk will soon have to compete with the world’s most formidable automaker, Mercedes-Benz.

According to reports from Australia’s Motoring magazine, Mercedes-Benz Australia executive David McCarthy revealed that the German marque is set to unveil a high-performance electric sedan at the Paris Motor Show in September.

The all-wheel-drive vehicle is believed to have a range of about 482km which puts it squarely on par with Tesla’s Model S P90D 509km range. This gives Tesla a “good reason to be concerned about it,” according to McCarthy. Given the top of the range Model S P90 retails for AU$215,000 locally, Mercedes will have to ensure that their tentative US$200,000 asking price is worth the bacon when it goes on sale in 2018.

This shouldn’t be a major issue since the brand already has a winning reputation in both motorsports and luxury vehicles. With the vast distances between cities in Australia, this news will come as a welcome amongst the growing fans of electric performance vehicles.

An electric version of the AMG GT R? Now there’s a scarily good idea.

How To End A Relationship Like A Man
How To End A Relationship Like A Man

Let’s face it. No man ever wants to break up with someone. Unfortunately life isn’t always about shooting sunshine and rainbows from one’s posterior and tough decisions have to be made when it comes to manning up and making the call when she’s not the one.

The grace in which a relationship ends is however entirely up to you. Do it right and don’t be a textbook douche. These are the eight ways to end a relationship like a magnificent (and empathetic) bastard.

End It Face To Face

mark

The only friendly ghost in this world is named Casper. And your name is not Casper, so stop ghosting your soon-to-be-ex and just man up. Don’t let the conveniences of instant communication these days sway you either as it doesn’t give you a free pass to breaking up with someone via phone, text, Snapchat, Pokemon Go, or any other means of non-face-to-face communication. The power of screenshotting is strong these days and unless you want to build a bad reputation for yourself (or become a meme) for ending it like a coward, then do it right the first time.

Make Sure It’s What You Want

obama-cell-phone-facebook

You’d be surprised how often guys end a relationship only to realise that they had no idea why they did it in the first place. In these scenarios it’s usually a case of overreacting and pulling the trigger too early. A bit of pre-composure, common sense and a night to cool off after an argument or incident is all it takes to resolve. If you’re leaving a current partner to pursue another then be ready for WW3 with little hopes of reconciliation down the line with the former. And no, you can’t ‘Super Like’ them when they show up on Tinder.

Don’t Do It In Public

jay

Some have argued that a public setting for a break up often prevents the dumpee from flipping out, but this could be a double-edged sword. If the party does decide to flip out regardless then you’ve officially got a meltdown on your hands – a crying, sobbing, cursing mess hurling abuse at you in front of a many children (will someone think of the children?) Do it at a popular park with less people if you must or in a car outside their place – this makes for an easy exit.

Be Honest, Not An Honest Asshole

claire

Every parting couple deserves honesty whether it be a good or bad reason. Thinking that you’ll save the other person heartache by hiding the truth from them will only do more damage in the long term. Having said that, it should be succinct and to the point, none of this, “I can’t accept the fact that your left thigh is bigger than your right. And you have pointy elbows.” You might not have a relationship anymore but you’ll certainly have the respect, a trait every man needs.

Stay Strong In The Aftermath

putin

There will no doubt be water works after a breakup and it’s your job as a man not to succumb to them out of guilt. You made the call for a reason so make sure you don’t relapse into relationship mode unless the circumstances clearly change for the better. In the case of women, she may be shocked at first due to their emotional nature but they’re resilient beings too. Remain steadfast in your decision and talk to her with calm and respect if she reaches out and reinstate the line in the sand as required.

It’s Not You, It’s Me

billy

This follows closely with honesty but focuses more on the cliched reasoning of “it’s not you, it’s me”. C’mon, of course it’s them. It’s your perception of them. Otherwise you’d be rolling around in a bed of roses together. Dropping this line is simply a cop out excuse and will leave the other party both devastated and confused. They have enough to deal with being just devastated so don’t say it unless you want them to manifest into a stalker.

We Can Still Be Friends

friends-with-benefits-facemarker

No. You cannot. Dolling out breadcrumbs is only a means of alleviating your own guilt and does nothing for the person you’ve just dumped – especially if they still like you. Leave it as a clean break and if the stars align one day and you’re both mature enough to fall into friendship then that’s cool. Don’t bet on it though.

Don’t Treat Them Like Your Trophy

jonha

We get it. She was a hottie, a dime, a ‘Would Wife’/10…and you broke her heart. You certainly don’t need to go full frat boy and tell the neighbours about that time you did it in the animal cemetery just because you’re no longer together. People talk, word travels fast and in the digital age, sensitive images can get you into a world of trouble if it’s circulated without the other person’s consent. Be smart, not a smartass who has something to prove.

The 25 Most Instagrammed Destinations In The US Right Now
The 25 Most Instagrammed Destinations In The US Right Now

From South Beach to Bourbon Street to the Las Vegas Strip, America’s iconic destinations are undeniably photogenic. TIME Magazine recently took to the Web to uncover the country’s most popular and most Instagrammed places.

TIME began by analysing all geotagged photos in the US with the hashtag “vacation,” then examined which other tags were commonly associated with them. That led the magazine to “travel”, “travelgram”, “ocean”, and “beach.” From there they compiled the data and created a list of the most popular vacation destinations in the country.

Beaches proved unsurprisingly popular. Oceanside spots in California, Florida, and Hawaii all made the cut. America’s major cities also took their rightful place on the list. New York and Boston proudly represent the East Coast, while Los Angeles and San Francisco rep the West. Chicago and New Orleans ensure the South and Midwest aren’t left behind.

The most unexpected entry on the list? That has to be The Office, a gentlemen’s club in Miami.

Flip through the gallery above to see the full list of America’s most Instagrammed places. Can you guess what takes the #1 spot?

A Lambo Huracan Snowmobile Is The Pinnacle Of Luxe Winter Travel
A Lambo Huracan Snowmobile Is The Pinnacle Of Luxe Winter Travel

If this isn’t in the next James Bond film, we’ll be sorely disappointed. Rain Prisk Designs have created a concept for the ultimate winter travel vehicle: a Lamborghini Huracan snowmobile.

Backcountry meets luxury in this impressive, sleek, and functional machine. The Huracan’s 5.2L naturally aspirated engine churns out 602 hp and reaches top speeds of 325 km/h (202 mph), which should make for a pants-wettingly thrilling excursion through the snow.

As radical as the concept is, it isn’t the first time someone thought to fuse the Huracan with an icy environment. Last April, the devious minds at Auto Express put the sports car to the test against a snowmobile and a pack of huskies. The resulting video will give you bad, bad ideas about what to do if you ever get your hands on a Lambo during a blizzard.

For now the Rain Prisk Designs creation is just a concept, but we’ll hold out hope that an elusive billionaire invests in the project.

How A Mysterious Yeast Mutation Invented Cold Beer
How A Mysterious Yeast Mutation Invented Cold Beer

This story was originally published on Gizmodo

Beer has been around for 500 glorious years, and yet, we still don’t know much about its origin. Sure, we know how it’s made and how to drink more than our doctors recommend, but researchers have always been unclear about where exactly the domesticated hybrid yeast used to make lager came from.

The problem is that the origin of the hybrid yeast used in lager beer is relatively unknown. We know that a domesticated yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) combined with a recently discovered yeast (Saccharomyces eubayanus) at some point to create an interspecies hybrid — but we’ve never understood how the two halves met.

Now, according to a study published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we may have greater insight into the origin of the hybrid yeast used to make the cold-brewed lager the world knows and loves.

“The message is that this is a far-flung, geographically and genetically diverse species,” said professor of genetics at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Chris Todd Hittinger in a statement. “In South America, [S. eubayanus strains] are very prevalent and very diverse.”

The history of S. eubayanus could be the missing piece to this mystery. Its existence was only discovered in 2011, and when researchers began looking for it around the world, it was found in places like New Zealand, North Carolina, Tibet and Wisconsin — all far from the origin of beer in Europe.

More recently discovered strains of yeast from places like North Carolina and Tibet have the closest relatives to the domesticated S. eubayanus half of the lager hybrid. Researchers believe that learning more about this half of the hybrid will give companies a better understanding of how yeast can be tamed and used in industrial products.

For now, as the search for our domesticated hybrid yeast’s origin continues, we’re just going to sit back and enjoy a cold one.
