Cam Newton, the New England Patriots’ newest quarterback and candidate for sharpest dresser in the NFL, has turned heads once again for his outrageous smack talk – as well as his latest luxury clothing flex.
Tom Brady’s departure from the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has dominated American football news this year. Brady, widely considered one of the best quarterbacks of all time, left some seriously big shoes to fill for the Pats. But that doesn’t seem to faze Newton one bit.
The move from the Carolina Panthers, his home for the last eight years, for a one-year stint at the Pats has clearly energised the already effervescent Newton.
During a recent table chat with Cleveland Brown wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (aka OBJ), Atlanta Falcons running back Todd Gurley and former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, Newton appeared confident and classy, wearing a Panama hat, smoking a stogie, and flexing a very crisp Moncler shirt.
View this post on Instagram
Newton’s got a well-established reputation as an NFL style icon, known for his love of big hats and his signature tropical-yet-classy style. He regularly steps out in brands like Balenciaga, Versace, Fendi and Gucci… But unlike many pro athletes worth squillions, he doesn’t do it just to flex: he’s a genuine fashion fan.
This clean grey Moncler tee is a subtle flex. Normally known for their jackets, French brand Moncler is a luxury stalwart. Since being listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2013 and the launch of their innovative Moncler Genius project in 2018, the heritage brand has gone from strength to strength – their growing reputation reflected by celebrities like Newton investing in their pieces.
You can watch the full interview with Newtown on OBJ’s YouTube channel here.

Australia has been through a lot this year. Fires, floods, respiratory diseases – you name it, it’s happened. But incredible footage, released yesterday, of the iconic Manly Ferry making its way back to Manly from Circular Quay, on a day where waves of up to 10 metres were recorded lashing Sydney’s coastline, suggests Australians have not yet lost the will to work.
View this post on Instagram
Posted to Instagram by 9News, the clip shows the Manly Ferry battling between the heads (the five minute interval of the 35-minute commute where the ferry is exposed to ocean swell). 9News captioned the video: “Rough Ride: Ferry services in Sydney between Manly and Circular Quay have been suspended due to big swell.”
The ferry being on its way back to Manly would suggest it had already dropped its Northern Beaches load off in the city.
All this while surfers, just around the corner, took on life-defying waves at a spot named ‘Deadmans.’
Beyond proving some Sydneysiders will (apparently) brave any conditions to keep the Viking mentality of presenteeism alive, this video is also symbolic of the state’s new approach to The Pandemic which, as NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian told radio station Nova 96.9 this morning, for the time being involves keeping the economy running, even as confirmed cases rise in Victoria.
The plan, for now, premier Berejiklian said, is on finding a COVID safe way to live for the next “one to two years,” rather than shutting down every time there is a new outbreak.
The responses to the video also suggest some Australians are still in good spirits: “yes please!” one wrote. “That would be so much fun with a bunch of mates and a few beers!”
“Wow. What a scary commute that would be.”
“Most Fun People Have Had Since Covid…And They close it down…Boooo,” commented another.
Further favourites include:
“Love to be on that ride.”
And:
“Damn, always miss this.”

In a sea of Swiss watch brands, one Japanese watchmaker stands out among the pack: Grand Seiko.
Seiko watches already have a well-deserved reputation for quality. Seiko is to watches what Audio-Technica is to headphones or the Toyota Corolla is to cars: affordable, reliable, and high-performing devices that are just as, if not more worthy, than their expensive competitors.
But Grand Seiko is a cut above normal Seikos, and a cut above even other luxury brands out of Europe. Since 1960, Grand Seiko has set the benchmark for modern horology with their somewhat conservatively styled but consistently beautiful, precise wristwatches.
Celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, Grand Seiko has released a variety of limited edition models, including special editions of popular Hi-Beat and Spring Drive designs. However, the pièce de résistance of their 60th Anniversary celebrations is their re-release of the original Grand Seiko chronometer in four striking colourways.
The beautiful, understated design of the original Grand Seiko belies the impeccable artistry and lofty goals that underpin the brand. Seiko set out to make the world’s best watch, harnessing the best traditions of Japanese craftsmanship, fusing tradition and innovation. In the same way, this 2020 re-release stays true to the original while subtly bringing the storied model into the 21st century.
The case shape and the softly curved dial and hands are entirely faithful to the 1960 original, but the case back is now in sapphire, revealing the beautiful finish of the manual-winding Calibre 9S64 movement, a highly-precise movement first introduced in 2011.
Somewhat ironically, manual movements are having a bit of a moment in 2020, making this choice of movement paradoxically both period-correct as well as suiting modern tastes. Also in line with today’s aesthetic, the case diameter has been increased from 35mm to 38mm, and a clever three-fold clasp makes the watch easy to wear.
Something else that will appeal to modern watch fans is its clean, highly legible design: legibility has always been a focus of the Grand Seiko brand, and in a market dominated by diver’s watches and fussy watch faces, these models stand out.
The original Grand Seiko re-release will be offered in four different designs, each with a different case metal: a Platinum 950 (ref. SBGW257, 57,000 AUD), an 18k yellow gold (ref. SBGW258, 38,950 AUD), a titanium model with a dark blue dial (ref. SBGW259, 11,950 AUD) and a 18k rose gold (ref. SBGW260) limited to only 350 models globally.
2021 also marks the 160th anniversary of Seiko’s founder Kintaro Hattori, and to celebrate the life and achievements of their founder Grand Seiko have also created a limited edition of 50 watches – the SBGZ005. Superficially, it resembles the SBGW257, but appearances are deceiving: unlike the manual-wound 60th Anniversary watches, the SBGZ005 features a Spring Drive movement – which combines all the benefits of an automatic manual movement with the precision and longevity of a quartz battery movement.
The SBGZ005’s softly rounded case is slightly smaller and thinner than its 60th Anniversary brothers, and doesn’t feature the ‘Diashock 24 jewels’ text the others boast either – instead letting its beautifully textured dial speak for itself. It’s made from platinum 950, ‘zarastu’ polished to a perfect distortion-free finish, and retails for 154,000 AUD. It’s inarguably the pinnacle of classic Japanese watchmaking and is sure to be in hot demand.
The SBGW257, SBGW258 and SBGW259 are already available at Australian Grand Seiko boutiques, with the SBGW260 and SBGZ005 arriving in January next year. To find out more, head on into your nearest Grand Seiko boutique.

The travel industry blew a disc in March. As we begin the bumpy recovery, there will be a lot of shaking and moving.
Enter: Virgin Australia. Though its purple disco was cut short when, struggling with long-term debt (AU $5 billion, to be precise), it sank into voluntary administration in April, it is now, with an injection of cash from new US owner Bain Capital, thinking about sending invitations again.
Bain aims to help Virgin Australia re-emerge as a leaner, meaner mid-market carrier.
This means, Virgin Australia, moving forward, will not attempt to operate like a full-service airline (a la Qantas), nor slim to the waistline of a low-budget airline like Jetstar.
Instead, it’s going after the middle market, operating a much smaller fleet, flying mainly domestic routes and short-range international flights to countries such as New Zealand.
Qantas has repeatedly said it welcomes the competition, so long as it’s fair. However, it’s hard to imagine The Flying Kangaroo not making moves to protect its market share, in anticipation of how its closest competitor’s product is set to change.
With both Qantas and Virgin Australia likely to see pent up demand – if and when state borders all open again – an interesting new in-air dynamic may soon emerge.
To understand what it could look like, and to ask how Qantas will protect its middle-market share (and how that could impact us, as consumers), DMARGE got in touch with Professor Rico Merkert, Chair in Transport and Supply Chain Management at the University of Sydney.
“Qantas will defend their market share and use their loyalty program even more to keep customers flying with them,” Professor Merkert told DMARGE exclusively. “They will also combine the international and domestic offering in a better way than Virgin will be able to (unless Virgin enters a number of new alliances now that they don’t have SIA, EY and HNA at their board table pulling the strings anymore).”
Aviation blogger, prolific frequent flyer and owner of Flight Hacks Immanuel Debeer made similar comments.
“If the predictions are right and Virgin Australia goes for a ‘mid market’ approach, I can definitely imagine Qantas will jump on the opportunity to poach customers where they can,” Debeer told DMARGE.
Debeer also said it’s important, for The Pointy End demographic, Virgin Australia don’t go too cheap: “low-cost carriers don’t demand loyalty and considering Virgin Australia 2.0 might scrap all their A330’s which feature an amazing business class product, frequent flyers will be left wondering what the point of Velocity status means to them.”
As for Virgin’s fiscal and marketing plans, Professor Merkert said, “Virgin will focus on the domestic market and as Bain is a private equity company, they will have an interest to present and dress Virgin as an entity that can generate a return on investment.”
This means, despite Qantas’ recent culling of international flights well into next year, there is scant opportunity for Virgin Australia to move in and play the early mover (“with the borders being closed, why would they offer international flights?”).
“Only airlines such as Qatar have the means do that (grabbing market share but at significant financial losses) in this current environment with the border situation less than certain.”
“If the borders open tomorrow (which they won’t), it will be Qantas who will react first in addition to the code share agreements that they have in place in any case today (i.e. with Emirates and American, and both generate revenues without having the risk to fly Qantas’ own metal),” Professor Merkert added.
We then asked Professor Merkert whether Virgin Australia moving their Sydney HQ out of the inner city (something many keyboard warriors have suggested is reflective of the company’s attitude to money) to somewhere cheaper like Mascot (where Qantas has their office) could help Virgin Australia make a start at righting its financials.
It’s a no from Professor Merkert: [This wouldn’t do] much, as Virgin’s main head office is in Brisbane and the [VA] Sydney office is not that big.”
“How to strip out cost other than focusing on one aircraft type and closing a lot of the lounges is the $1 billion question. It will be interesting to see what they will do marketing wise,” he added.
“Something to look forward to as a customer… is… they will have to come up with something good and innovative in order to be competitive.”
Only time (and ticket sales) will tell.

It’s hard to think Porsche, currently the world’s most profitable car manufacturer, was ever in financial strife. Yet Porsche in its current form almost never got off the ground.
The first production Porsche sports car, the 356, was created by Ferry Porsche whilst his father – Porsche founder and VW Beetle designer Ferdinand Porsche – was a political prisoner in France. It was a miracle that these first models, produced by Ferry’s small team by hand in an old sawmill in Austria, were enough of a success to allow the fledgling firm to stay alive.
The 356 was Porsche’s first mainstream performance offering, being produced for over 17 years from 1948 to 1965, before being superseded by the first Porsche 911 – arguably the coolest car ever made. However, the company was concerned that the considerable price increase of the new six-cylinder 911 over the old four-cylinder 356 would affect sales and alienate potential customers, Porsche introduced the 912 in 1963 as an entry-level, four-cylinder model.
The 912 is an interesting beast that has the 356’s engine but the 911’s body: other than the badging, it’s virtually indistinguishable from its 911 brother. It might have less horsepower but it retains the iconic handling, luxury and looks of its big bro – and is perhaps the most underrated 60s sports car of all time.
More to the point: there’s one being sold on Carsales in Bonbeach, Melbourne right now.

This 1969 LHD model in ‘Sandy Beige’ is just stunning. Some would say that it’s a boring paint job but we reckon this understated factory colour suits this ‘subtle 911 –: it’s creamy, classy and very 60s. It also complements its rich tan leather interior perfectly. It’s like an iced coffee: refreshing, cool yet with enough zing to energise you; put a smile on your face.
Like any good classic Porsche, the 912 is rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive and air-cooled, powered by the same 1.6 L Type 616 flat-four from the 356 good for 102hp. That doesn’t sound like much, but compared to its premium 911 stablemate the 912 actually has superior weight distribution, handling, and range.
In any case, you’re hardly buying a car of this vintage because you’re looking for some performance monster. A modern Toyota Yaris makes more horsepower than a 912. Hell, a modern base model 911 might put out 380hp but how many modern 911 owners really use all of those horses? The point of owning a classic car is to enjoy the experience, not to break a land-speed record with it. At which point, does it matter if you’re driving a 912 or a 911? They look identical, which is to say, beautiful.

The provenance of this 912 is unimpeachable, the owner relates.
“1969 LHD – unconverted and original. Matching numbers… Original engine. Just serviced. [Has] the original Factory ordered, 5 Speed dogleg gearbox (which is the 911 gearbox)… Original, and correct date stamped wheels.”
The tan interior is particularly sumptuous. The car actually looks factory new, which is impressive for a vehicle that’s over 50 years old. 912s were well-regarded in their day for their build quality and reliability, and the fact that this one’s still alive and kicking further endorses Porsche’s well-established reputation for motoring excellence.

If you’ve got a spare $82,500 burning a hole in your pocket, we can’t think of many better ways to spend it. Consider this, too: it’s the cheapest 912 on sale on Carsales, and the cheapest 911s / 356s cost many thousands of dollars more. And you’re hardly losing out by buying a 912, as previously established.
We can just imagine it now. Cruising down the beach, windows down, sun shining… Sorry, we’ll pick our jaws up from the floor.
Head on over to Carsales if, like us, you can’t get enough of this pretty little Porsche.

Why do men spend so much time working out? Is it because we want to get fit, or is it for our own personal satisfaction Ask most men and their answer might be a little less worthy: so we can stare at ourselves a little longer in the mirror.
While having a six-pack doesn’t guarantee you romantic success, it certainly doesn’t hurt. And if you’re lucky enough to be bestowed with an amazing physique, either through graft or perfect genetics, the temptation to show off your bod is hard to resist. What’s the point of looking this good if no-one’s going to see it?
It follows then that the most common choice of dating profile photo for men is one that shows off muscles. It’s a no-brainer, surely – why wouldn’t you show off your rig if you’re looking to reel in the matches?
Yet recent data from one of the world’s biggest dating sites would suggest that taking your top off in your photos might actually lead to less matches. Unless you’re Zac Efron or something.
View this post on Instagram
Dating.com polled its users to determine whether or not displaying shirtless pictures on dating profiles has an impact on their chances of finding a match. Results reveal a major disconnect between men, who believe shirtless pictures help their chances of finding love… And women, who believe it’s actually a bad look.
According to their data, men with shirtless pictures displayed on their profile have on average 25% fewer matches than those who don’t, yet nearly 90% of men believe that shirtless pictures help their chances of landing a match.
To sum that up, keeping your shirt on in your dating profile DP, gives you a 25% better chance of scoring a match than those who are whipping theirs off (according to Dating.com’s statistics).
In contrast, 66% of all women surveyed said that shirtless pictures on a guy’s profile imply a lack of maturity and self-awareness, with 76% of women said they’d be unlikely to consider dating a man with shirtless images displayed in their profile for a committed relationship.
Okay, so maybe shirtless pics are good if you’re just looking for a casual thing, we can hear you asking. You’d be wrong, according to Dating.com’s results: only 15% of women would be open to a hookup and 9% would consider a friendship with men who use shirtless pics on their profiles. Ouch.
Some more takeaways: three out of every five male dating profiles contain at least one shirtless picture compared to how only one out of every five female dating profiles contains at least one bikini/bathing suit picture. All said, that same group of women had a more than 40% increase in overall match rates, compared to their covered-up counterparts. Go figure.
At the end of the day, dating isn’t just about looks. If you have intelligent prompts and other photos of yourself that are a little more modest, having a shirtless pic isn’t going to completely ruin your chances of finding love.
In short? People know when you’re just peacocking, champ. Keep your shirt on.

Mark Wahlberg is one of the fittest men in Hollywood. The 49-year-old Boston native and star of films like Boogie Nights and Daddy’s Home has a physique so sharp it could cut glass, and is widely regarded to have some of the best pecs in America.
Discovering the secret to Wahlberg’s success would be like discovering a cure for baldness: men around the world would pay squillions to find out. Luckily, Wahlberg teases much of his exercise routine, regularly sharing on Instagram footage of his workouts from his palatial home gym.
Wahlberg’s latest workout’s got fitness fanatics scratching their heads, however. The bizarre-looking circuit, utilising a variety of novel fitness technologies, looks like the kind of thing a gym newbie would attempt. Yet if Wahlberg’s testimony is anything to believe, it might just be the key to unlocking a ridiculous rig like his.
Wahlberg, with the assistance of F45 coach Shannon Helm (Wahlberg owns a minority stake in the Australian gym chain), can be seen doing one-legged pushups, his leg balancing on an exercise ball. If that wasn’t hardcore enough, he’s upped the ante by using Perfect Pushup handles on top of a Power Plate, whilst also wearing B Strong BFR armlets.
While the exercise looks a bit ridiculous and gimmicky, there might be some science to back up Wahlberg’s claim that using these tools you can “cut your workout time in half…and get way more gains.”
View this post on Instagram
The Power Plate is an interesting piece of equipment that essentially uses vibrations to stimulate muscles to contract and relax as much as 30 more times a second than with normal exercise. While the science isn’t settled on whether or not vibration plate equipment like the Power Plate can reduce recovery time, some fitness experts suggest that because it exercises multiple muscle groups at once, it can reduce how long you need to work out.
A professional-grade Power Plate like Wahlberg’s is an expensive piece of kit – top of the line Power Plate models can cost up to $18,000 – although you can find cheaper vibration plate brands for sale that will achieve similar effects.
B Strong armlets are an example of BFR (blood flow restriction) technology. Also called occlusion training or hypoxi training, BFR’s exactly what it sounds like: you intentionally restrict bloodflow to the parts of the body you want to work out in order to prevent blood leaving the muscles. The theory is that this forces muscles to grow quicker and can reduce recovery time. It’s a potentially risky technique but there’s plenty of evidence to support it.
Combining these technologies with a more traditional workout technique like pushups allows Wahlberg to effectively target specific muscle groups and hone his workout, reducing exercise and recovery time. You should always consult a PT or other health professional before jumping in and using these sorts of technologies, but it’s hard to argue with Wahlberg’s results.
Gimme another 20, Marky Mark.

Saudi Arabia is known for oil, Mecca, sand and arresting journalists. In recent years, however, it has begun a campaign to attract tourists, to the point where they hired a bunch of influencers (in 2019) to come and, quite literally, whitewash their reputation.
Further adding to the sheen, the nation’s rulers have signed off on the construction of a shiny new airport, the designs of which, we’d argue, wouldn’t look out of place next to Bond villain Franz Oberhauser’s Saharan Crater Facility.
As ESCAPE reports, “Designs have been revealed for a new airport in Saudi Arabia, inspired by the optical illusion of a desert mirage.”
“The new airport will be built on Saudi Arabia’s northwestern coast, the site of a new ultra-luxury man-made holiday destination, to be named AMAALA.”
“A gateway to AMAALA, visitors will be greeted by personalised experiences from the moment they step off the plane. From design to personalisation, this will be no ordinary airport. Immersed in the spirit of AMAALA, the airport will create an environment that embodies the philosophy of the destination beyond,” AMAALA CEO Nicholas Naples told media.
“This will be a unique space that personifies luxury and marks the start of memorable experiences for the world’s most discerning guests. We are delighted to work with Foster + Partners and Egis on this project.”
View this post on Instagram
The irony is, despite their country having a reputation for being ideological worlds away from Instagram, Hollywood, etc. the Saudi Arabian tourism board appears to be incredibly social media savvy.
When travel restrictions lift, visitors are set to see land art (specifically designed to be seen from the air). In addition, when entering the terminal, passengers will be met with a sleek mirrored edifice rising from the desert (the airport).
According to ESCAPE, “The structure takes its inspiration from the surrounding environment, resulting in a mesmerising mirage effect. A spacious courtyard will anchor the terminal and will be complemented by contemporary interiors complete with unique artwork and tailored experiences.”
“Among the list of amenities provided by the airport are climate-controlled hangars that will be available for private jets as well as a ground transfer service that is accessible from inside the arrival hangar,” (ESCAPE).

“Responding to the surrounding landscape, the terminal building will form an exclusive gateway to the AMAALA resort. The passenger experience through the entire building will be akin to a private members club – luxurious and relaxing. Focusing on the themes of art, wellbeing and sport, the design seeks to establish a new model for private terminals that provides a seamless experience from resort to aeroplane,” Foster + Partners’ senior executive partner, Gerard Evenden told media.
AMAALA construction is expected to begin in 2020, with all phases completed by 2028.
The airport is set to be compled in 2023, and is estimated to see one million travellers per year go through it once it officially opens.
Also worthy of note is that the airport’s terminal and control tower, and the airport master plan were designed by two different entities.
As Traveller reports, “The terminal and control tower design was developed by UK-based architectural and design firm Foster + Partners, while the airport master plan was overseen by international consultancy and engineering group Egis.”
