Revealed: What It Costs To Spend A Week On A Super Yacht In The Mediterranean
Revealed: What It Costs To Spend A Week On A Super Yacht In The Mediterranean

Have you ever wondered what it costs to live on a luxury yacht? With the epicentre of the super yachting universe having shifted last year to Turkey (while Europe remained closed to the rich Oligarchs of Russia and the Middle East), and now having swung back in summer 2021 to Europe again, you might have found your Instagram feed inundated (again) with images of monied individuals living their best lives atop shiny white surfaces.

If seeing people flouncing around Monaco, St Tropez, and the like has got you wondering how much it would really cost to cast off from civilisation (and spend a summer living on a luxury yacht of your own), you’re in luck.

We recently spoke to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci, to ask what it costs to live on a luxury yacht or super yacht. While of course there are many ways of doing this (from becoming a billionaire and buying your own, to handing out CV’s at a dock and becoming a deckhand) and so the answer greatly varies, Candaş‘ thoughts below give you a general idea.

Luxury yachts are moared in the marina at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show on September 21, 2011 in Monaco, Monaco. The Monaco Yacht Show presents 500 exhibitors showcasing high-end world luxury yachting products and services. This years show will run from September 21-24, 2011. (Photo by Frederic Nebinger/Getty Images)

“For the costs of living on a superyacht, I can say that it really depends on the yacht, location you cruise and your lifestyle,” Candaş told DMARGE.

“But to have an estimated cost, I can show an example of charter yachts. We charge charter clients 30% of the rate of the weekly charter rate in advance as APA (Advance Provisioning Advance). This could be less or more during the charter, but generally, it is an average expense of the guests.”

“This includes yacht’s fuel expenses, marina berth fees (if any) food and beverages. So if you charter a yacht around 35 metre in the Mediterranean, let’s say a weekly rate is 100.000 euro, your weekly expense will be around 30.000 euros [AUD $48,628].”

Got it? Good. All you have to do now is earn the money in the first place…

Man’s ‘Divisive’ Check Out Act Sparks Hotel Etiquette Debate
Man’s ‘Divisive’ Check Out Act Sparks Hotel Etiquette Debate

‘How you should leave your hotel room when you check out?’ For most of us there’s a pretty simple answer to that – ‘however you want.’Though, as many people have found out the hard way with Airbnb (where hosts can review guests), you are expected to clean up after yourself in some forms of accommodation, in hotels you’re literally paying for the convenience of not having to.Right? Wrong. Or at least – that’s not how one man, who recently went viral, thinks. Darren Dowling, a Scottish internet sensation known as Dazza, took to Facebook on the 19th of August, to share how he leaves his hotel bed every time he checks out of a hotel. And it’s quite different to the American laissez-faire attitude.“i always try and leave a hotel room like this. is this the right or wrong thing to do?” Darren asked his followers on Facebook, posting the following photo.

Image via Facebook
“I don’t bother folding it because I know they’re only going to pick it up and put it in a bag,” he added today, speaking to followers on Twitch about the absurd way in which such a simple photo managed to go viral. His photo has been picked up by news outlets all over the world – from Australia to America. Darren thinks this is a bit ridiculous.“I wasn’t expecting anything to happen but it just went wild,” he told followers.

“It’s funny to think 100s of thousands of Australians have seen my hotel bed and my Papa Johns I had the night before.”

The 7.4 thousand comments on Australian news outlet Today’s Facebook post of the photo (as well as Darren’s original post) shows the internet is well and truly divided over this act.Commenters are split into two camps. One group believes it is a nice gesture.“As a housekeeper, this makes me very happy when customers do this, saves us an extra job and makes it easier,” one wrote.Another said: “Yes! From all hospitality works we salute you. Yes we are paid to clean but it’s human decency to just clean up after yourself.”

“Yes it’s the right thing to do and it says a lot about the kind of fella you are. Can you imagine the amount of rooms they need to do that are trashed. Respect to you.”

“As a housekeeper we very rarely see people do this. And if they do it’s much appreciated. As to the turd that states its what we get paid to do. We’ll firstly regardless of how clean or dirty a room is, we have a set time to clean it. And the amount of scruffs that leave shit (actual shit) everywhere is astonishing. O and vomit.”Another type of commenter begged to differ. “They’re paid to clean it,” one wrote. “I got fined in Spain for doing this,” wrote another. One man claimed the hotel staff might be so surprised by this (lets face it, highly unusual) piece of altruism it might make them suspicious.“They claimed the room was ‘messy’ as I stripped the beds and put any rubbish in a bin bag and put them nicely in the corner of the room. Had to pay €60.”Ouch.Another Facebook user said that while the gesture was appreciated it was a little over the top, writing: “As a hotel manager I think this is class. I would say no need to fold things up so neatly you could literally leave it all in a pile on the floor. But guests like you make our days a little easier.”Got it? Good. Now you just need to learn the dark arts of plane etiquette and you’re ready to trot the globe…To learn more about sneaky hotel hacks, watch the following video, where a flight attendant shares her top tips for staying in a hotel and making the most of your stay…

Michael B. Jordan Shows You How To Rock High-Waisted Chinos Without Talking Through Your Zipper

They say diamonds are formed under pressure. But what does that have to do with Michael B. Jordan?Well, we reckon the 34-year-old actor and current “sexiest man alive” (according to People magazine) must be under immense pressure to make sure he’s worthy of that lofty title. I mean, he was a ‘diamond’ before he was dubbed the sexiest man alive, but he’s definitely become even sexier since.Part of the Black Panther star’s sex appeal comes from his dress sense. He’s always got his finger on the pulse when it comes to the most innovative new style trends but he has a certain sense of tact; a je ne sais quoi about how he jumps into them.  He’s got a real gentlemanly touch when it comes to fashion.Michael B Jordan’s latest outfit is emblematic of his impeccable sartorial taste. Out on the town last week in Los Angeles with his girlfriend Lori Harvey (daughter of game show host Steve Harvey), Jordan looked slick and summery in a patterned rayon shirt over a white tank top, gold chain, chunky black army boots and the pièce de résistance – some high-waisted, exceptionally crisp chinos.

Hot steppin’. Image: Getty
It’s an unconventional look: military officer meets beach bum? But we have to say, it works. The summery, light tones of his shirt and pants contrast in a satisfying way with his boots… And the earthy-toned fit contrasts even better with his light blue Ferrari (which you can see in the background). It also shows that you can rock some traditional, high-waisted chinos without looking like your grandfather or a sex offender.RELATED: David Beckham Rocks Once Ridiculed Fashion Trend In Stunning Style During Maserati ShootMichael B Jordan’s approach to summer fashion in 2021 is a rather refreshing one. Take this short-sleeve knitted shirt he rocked earlier last week, too – the world’s sexiest cardigan – an eclectic choice that demonstrates Jordan’s Midas touch. It all goes to show that the most important element of men’s fashion is confidence. Jordan takes these looks from a 9 to a 10 out of 10 thanks to his confidence. I mean, if people call you the sexiest man alive, you’d have no choice but to radiate confidence…Like Michael B. Jordan’s style? Wait until you see his fitness. Watch the following video to see how he keeps himself in shape.

Spanish Formula One Hotshot Carlos Sainz Jr. Flaunts Off Season Gains

Formula One drivers rarely get a day off. Apart from the break over Christmas, they have to remain fully dedicated to the task at hand throughout the year. While they may also get a few weeks off during the summer break to recharge their batteries, they still can’t afford to let themselves go. As we saw last year, Lewis Hamilton spent much of his off season in the gym, transforming his physique in the process.Indeed, Formula One drivers undergo serious G-force during each race, losing kilos of sweat during the process, and so need to remain physically and mentally fit. One of the latest drivers to show his support for the cause is Carlos Sainz. The Spanish driver, who currently drives for Ferrari, recently shared an image on his Instagram account of him working out, apparently seeking to gain some strength before the second half of the racing season begins.

Captioning the image: “Last days before we go racing again. Ready to get back!”, his mind is solely focused on the next race, which will take place in Belgium at the notorious Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps (from the 27th to the 29th of August 2021).Grasping a dumbbell in each hand, Sainz appears to be performing a dumbbell overhead press, a great exercise for working the arms, shoulders and even the chest. And, due to him using dumbbells as opposed to a barbell, his core stability will be brought into play too, since the weight is isolated on each side of his body, rather than being able to be spread out if using a barbell. He could also be seen spending time trying his hand at Zuckerboarding whilst spending time in the Balearic Islands.RELATED: Best Shoulder Workouts & Exercises For MenCarlos isn’t the only Formula One driver to enjoy his time during the off season. Fernando Alonso, often regarded as one of the very best drivers to ever grace the tarmac, spent some time cycling to improve his cardio fitness, as did Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi, who chose to spend his downtime in his home country of Italy.

Mick Schumacher revealed he’d been spending time lifting weights in the gym, while Russian driver Nikita Mazepin could be found hitting the treadmill. Red Bull Racing’s potential champion in waiting Max Verstappen, chose to have a bit more fun, however, hooning around on a jetski in Monaco.

‘Stop Deifying Foreign Tourists’: Bali Urged To Make Big Change
‘Stop Deifying Foreign Tourists’: Bali Urged To Make Big Change

From floating breakfasts in Nusa Dua to Crossfit centres in Canggu, many tourists in Bali certainly worship themselves. But do Indonesian authorities need to wade into the pool and throw the coffee off a cliff? We’ll let you answer that one yourself…Speaking of radical proposals, though, Nyoman Sukma Arida, a Tourism Faculty lecturer at a university in Denpasar, thinks it’s time Bali stopped prioritizing international tourists over domestic ones.According to local media outlet Coconuts, Sukma said during a virtual discussion that Bali should stop treating foreigners like gods.“It’s time Bali stopped deifying foreign tourists, in the future after the pandemic it will be difficult to attract tourists because tourism competition will be even tighter between countries,” Sukma reportedly said.Sukma said Bali must pivot.“We’ve observed how Bali differentiates treatment between foreign and domestic tourists. But this doesn’t happen in other regions like Yogyakarta and Malang, where both tourists are treated equally,” Sukma said.

“Before the pandemic, Bali leaned towards mass tourism, but in the future this will change. Bali must adjust.”

Coconuts reports the COVID-19 pandemic is changing people’s travel patterns, writing: “staycations [have been] rising in popularity in the past year.”Sukma allegedly reckons Bali should tap into this, in order to support local tourism, developing tourism villages and the like, as he thinks people will move away from choosing such crowded destinations.Bali is arguably Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination. The island saw a total of almost 6.3 million direct foreign tourist arrivals in 2019.Australian and Chinese tourists made up more than half of that total, according to Statistica.Indonesian tourists, however, still make up the vast majority of visitors to Bali.According to Coconuts, over 10.5 million Indonesian tourists visited Bali in 2019, while about 4.5 million travelled to the province in 2020 (international arrivals were likewise slashed to around 1 million in 2020 thanks to the pandemic).RELATED: I Went To Bali’s Most Instagram-Famous Oasis & It Was A Complete DisasterTourism is both an opportunity and a challenge being wrangled by authorities all around the world, and there is no easy solution. Perhaps the pandemic will shake things up enough for a few positive initiatives to take hold though.Given what some foreign tourists have been up to lately in Bali, with the most notable being a Russian expat who was deported for riding a motorbike into the sea, and a pair of pranksters who painted masks on then entered a supermarket in breach of COVID-19 rules, perhaps it’s not surprising there is a sense of ‘enough is enough’ in some parts of the community.Still reading? Nike’s ‘Hannibal Lecter’ Olympic Face Masks Now Selling Like Wildfire Online
Nike’s ‘Hannibal Lecter’ Olympic Face Masks Now Selling Like Wildfire Online

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games certainly generated a lot of surprises – beyond the fact that it went ahead in the first place. From Italy’s Marcell Jacobs unexpectedly winning the men’s 100m sprint to weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz securing the Philippines’ first-ever gold medal and Australia’s absolute dominance in women’s swimming, it was a truly exciting competition. One standout news story of the Games, however, was the bizarre-looking face masks that Team USA’s competitors were seen wearing. Highly distinctive, ribbed and protruding, they were compared to everything from Hannibal Lecter’s muzzle from The Silence of the Lambs to Batman villain Bane’s mask from The Dark Knight Rises. In short, there was no missing them – they were easily the biggest style story of Tokyo 2020.Developed by sportswear giant Nike, the mask’s official product name is the Venturer Performance, and its design inspiration didn’t come from any sort of screen villain – instead, the 3D-structured design was actually inspired by origami (now that’s some lovely marketing for a Tokyo Olympics). Machine-washable and highly comfortable, the design is in pursuit of maximum breathability – making it ideal for usage during athletic activities.Naturally, their distinct look, technical superiority and that association with the Olympics has made these masks extremely hot property – including Down Under.

The masks retail for $60, but they’re sold out everywhere. Naturally, there’s a booming aftermarket for the things: DMARGE has seen scalpers selling the things for as much as double the retail price online (in both Australia and America).Anything with that Nike swoosh is already hot property for hypebeasts – and considering that here in Australia, most of the population is still suffering under severe lockdowns and the like, the allure of a highly functional, highly distinct, highly cool mask is obvious even to the most fashion-phobic.RELATED: Drake’s Latest Nike Collaboration Proves Celebrities Can’t Get Enough Of This SportInterestingly, Nike has already taken down its product pages for the Venturer Performance on both their Australian and US online shopfronts. Common reseller platforms such as StockX and the influential Australian buy/sell Facebook group Underground Society also seem to be scrubbing any listings of the sold-out mask.
A product shot of the Nike Venturer Performances in their travel case. The mask features a quick-change strap system so you can alternate between a tough anti-slip strap for working out and a more comfortable strap for more casual usage. Image: Nike
Why all the smoke and mirrors? Maybe it’s because these groups don’t want to be seen to be enabling resellers profiting off masks. That said, we’re more than eighteen months into this COVID reality; that argument may have made more sense last year when there weren’t enough masks to go around.RELATED: The Cold Hard Truth About Australia’s 70% Vaccination TargetStill, three figures for a face mask seems a little punchy – even if they’re Olympic-grade. And especially if they’ve already been used… Eurgh.Instead, why not check out DMARGE’s guide to the best face masks on the market (that don’t make you look like a psycho).

Eating One Hotdog Reduces Your Life Expectancy By 36 Minutes, Study Suggests
Eating One Hotdog Reduces Your Life Expectancy By 36 Minutes, Study Suggests

Pretensions aside, American cuisine is one of the world’s most diverse, varied, and (dare we say it) tastiest. From novel, uniquely American inventions such as hamburgers or gumbo to quintessential favourites like apple pie or macaroni and cheese, there’s a number of dishes that could all claim to be America’s national dish. But if we had to pick one, it would be the hot dog.Burgers might make up 50% of all fast food consumed in the United States but no other country loves hot dogs quite as America does. It’s also a dish emblematic of American culture: a fusion food; something to eat on the mean streets of New York, America’s biggest city; or at a baseball game, America’s national sport. Nothing screams America more than a hot dog.But America’s obsession with the iconic mystery meat might be coming at the cost of the nation’s life expectancy, if a new scientific study is to be believed.

Oh, say can you see… Image: Getty
Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Department of Environmental Health Sciences have published their findings in the pages of Nature, one of the world’s most respected scientific journals, that suggests that the consumption of processed meats can take minutes off your life, The New York Post reports. They single out that a beef hot dog on a bun can take as much as 36 minutes off your life, “largely due to the detrimental effect of processed meat.” On the flip side, healthier foods such as salted peanuts, baked salmon or rice with beans can actually add between 10 and 15 minutes to your life.RELATED: Changing Your Meal Frequency Could Help You Cheat Death36 minutes is a long time – especially when considering that smoking a cigarette is supposed to take ‘only’ 11 minutes off your life, as this University of Bristol study suggests. Meat sticks are worse for you than cancer sticks, then?
A hot dog stand in New York City, a quintessential NYC sight. Image: Getty
Naturally, the study has been met with some scepticism by Americans online.“[It’s] completely irresponsible to suggest there is some sort calculable linear relationship between any food and lifespan. Have a hot dog at a 4th of July party – it won’t impact your life. But don’t eat lots of processed food. Not that hard,” one Twitter user rather wisely pointed out.RELATED: Nutritionist Busts Butter Myth You Probably Still BelieveAnother put it this way: “Joey Chestnut would have been dead years ago,” referencing the American competitive eater who currently holds the world record for most hot dogs consumed at the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. The record is 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, by the way (or 7.6 hot dogs a minute), which he set in July this year.Gonna be honest here – all this talk of hot dogs just makes me want to eat one. A chilli dog and a pack of Marlboros, please.

China’s Fury Over Tourist’s Photo Reveals Danger Of ‘Selfie Sightseeing’
China’s Fury Over Tourist’s Photo Reveals Danger Of ‘Selfie Sightseeing’

From Christopher McCandles eating (probably) poisonous potato seeds to this Venice tourist thinking a flash flood was a good time to wade into a canal, travellers have made innumerable mistakes over the years. In recent times we’ve covered everything from a British tourist falling off a cliff trying to take a selfie (and surviving with everything but their ego intact) to two German backpackers being fined $1,500 for the crime of brewing coffee in the wrong place in Italy. Not to mention the litany of errors Australians have made in Bali or the ~cringe~ social media mistake everyone makes in Paris.Suffice to say: knowing and respecting local customs and culture (and safety measures) is an important part of travelling anywhere. People are fallible though. Mistakes will always occur. The big difference now is that – because we all want to wave our trips in our friends’ faces – many faux pas are now being outed by the very tourists who commit them.Speaking of faux pas… Chinese actor Zhang Zhehan’s career was recently torpedoed by the emergence of photos of him posing at a Japanese war memorial (which honours some of Japan’s major war criminals) in 2018, on Chinese social media site Weibo.Though the offending photos are photos, not selfies, they still fall nicely into the “selfie gaze” type travel trend The Conversation coined in 2018.

When you live somewhere like America you might get an angry mob on Twitter calling you tone deaf. When you live in a “totalitarian lite” state like China the consequences for this kind of thing can be a little sharper.Since the pictures of Zhang at the Japanese Yasukuni Shrine have gone viral, Zhang has been elbowed out of the entertainment industry with various mainstream platforms purging his films and television works, variety shows and music. As Global Times reports, “All films and drama series that Zhang Zhehan appeared in, such as Demon Girl and Word of Honor, were taken down from Chinese online video platforms. It seems that Zhang had never been on those platforms before.”

“The episodes that Zhang, 30, had played a part in reality shows Everybody Stand By and Keep Running cannot be found as of press time. On video sharing platform Bilibili, only news videos relating to him could be found.”

Global Times added: “Searching ‘Zhang Zhehan’ on the video platform Mango TV returns ‘the person doesn’t exist.’ Chinese netizens also found that scenes of Zhang in historical drama Nirvana in Fire were deleted as it is now on air on Shandong TV.”

“Music platforms including QQ Music and NetEase Music took down all his music and even deleted his personal profile.”

According to Global Times, “The internet boycott against Zhang came after China Association of Performing Arts released a notice on August 15, urging the industry to ban Zhang as it said Zhang’s highly improper behavior not only harms national emotion but also brings bad influence on teenagers who follow him.”Tourists and expats have fallen victim to ‘The Instagram Effect‘ all over the globe, as you can see in the video below…

News.com.au reports that Zhang has issued an apology, saying he had been attending a friend’s wedding in Japan and was “ashamed” for his “misconduct.”“I am not pro-Japanese, I am Chinese!” he wrote.“I have never made any remarks harmful to my motherland on any occasion. I deeply love my motherland.”He promised to “study history and culture more seriously,” news.com.au reports.“I hereby solemnly apologize (for..) some content in my photos that seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.”Global Times reports, “Zhang made an apology online over his ignorance, which did not stop the boycott and termination of his business partnerships. All corporate brands which endorsed him had terminated cooperation with him, such as beverage company Wahaha, Jewel brand Pandora and fabrics brand Shanghai Mercury Home Textile.”

“Last week, Chinese streaming site Youku deleted Zhang’s name from the cast list of its martial arts TV drama Word of Honor. Video-sharing platform Douyin announced it had cleared Zhang’s account.”

Though most tourists do not have the same high profile to look after as Zhang, this habit of taking photos everywhere we go, despite not always thinking about the exact historical context (or how it will look to be taking photos somewhere), is one likely to continue to keep catching tourists unaware well into the future.Even if travelling ‘under the social influence’ doesn’t make you go viral, as one DMARGE correspondent found out earlier this year, it can still ruin what would otherwise be a fun holiday (see: I Went To NSW’s Most Instagram-Famous Waterfall & It Was A Complete Disaster).

John Legend’s ‘Beater’ Watch Costs More Than Your Car
John Legend’s ‘Beater’ Watch Costs More Than Your Car

John Legend is a style icon. The 42-year-old singer isn’t just only one of the most talented musicians alive today: a vocalist, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and EGOT (i.e. an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner)… But he’s also one of the most fashionable male celebrities on the planet, serving up style inspiration even more impressive than his vocal range. But the only thing more stacked than his musical trophy cabinet is his watch collection. Legend loves high-end watches, and has particularly good taste in them, too – with all sorts of pieces from brands like Bulgari, Rolex and OMEGA filling his safe. His favourite watch brand, however, is Audemars Piguet. More specifically, he loves the Royal Oak – he owns a few of them. But his absolute favourite watch is his yellow gold Royal Oak Chronograph with a white dial: it’s his ‘beater’ watch, i.e. the watch you wear day-to-day regardless of the activity and don’t stress about getting damaged.

Despite hanging out with a lot of rappers, he’s never directly referenced his AP in a song of his. Images: Getty / Audemars Piguet
That the man uses a hefty gold watch worth in excess of $140,000 as his beater says a lot about how successful he is… Or perhaps the size of his cojones. Must be nice.Weighing in at 41mm and powered by the Audemars Piguet calibre 2385, this three-counter chronograph rendition of Switzerland’s most famous luxury sports watch boasts a rather unique silvery-white “Grande Tapisserie” dial, and both a case and integrated bracelet made out of brushed 18ct yellow gold.Legend actually owns a very similar reference, also in yellow gold, but with a black dial – the ref. 26320OR.OO.1220OR.01. There’s something about Royal Oaks that really inspires compulsive collecting: Kevin Hart does it too (although Hart has almost a dozen of the things…)RELATED: Kevin Hart Shows Off ‘Bloody Good’ New Suit & $200,000 Audemars Piguet WatchHe wears this white dial number more than any other watch in his collection, however. No matter the weather, no matter the outfit, you can be sure that it’s the first timepiece he’ll reach for. He was spotted wearing it twice last week – in the photo above and in the photo below, where he’s holding the hot dog – as well as during his family holiday in Portofino earlier this year.
Nothing quite says ‘baller’ like unbuttoning your silk shirt and getting stuck into a glizzy with a whopping big gold watch on. Images: Getty / @johnlegend
Flex on me once, shame on you. Flex on me twice, shame on me…Of course, to fuel his expensive watch habit, Legend works hard. Aside from being a coach on the American version of the popular TV talent show The Voice, Legend’s other big hustle has been building his own wine brand, Legend Vineyard Exclusive, in collaboration with acclaimed Napa Valley winery Raymond Vineyards. He’s not the only celebrity who’s entered the wine game, either: check out Formula One driver (and true-blue Aussie legend) Daniel Ricciardo’s tasty new collaboration with St Hugo.
