Tesla’s cars might continue to break both sales and performance records, but their build quality still leaves a lot to be desired – as the brand’s latest awkward recall demonstrates.
Tesla is recalling nearly 1.1 million US vehicles because the window automatic reversal system may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction, increasing the risk of injury, Reuters reports. Essentially, the windows are supposed to stop closing if they detect an obstacle in their path – like a finger or hand – but in some instances, they don’t, leading to pinched fingers… Or worse.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that this fault means affected vehicles, which includes some 2017-2022 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y, and 2021-2022 Model S / Model X vehicles, fail to comply with the requirements of a federal motor vehicle safety standard on power windows – not a trivial thing. (A recall notice for the fault has yet to be issued in Australia.)
Apparently, this has been a problem with Tesla vehicles for a while now. As software engineer James Nelson has shared on LinkedIn, “I love my Tesla… [but] my car is of questionable reliability and unsafe for children who are too young to take instructions or get in and out of their seatbelts on their own.”
“Every time I get out of my car I leave at least one door open until everyone is in and everyone is out, but worrying about that on a $65+k (before tax) car is surprising to say the least.”
James Nelson
Okay, so some Teslas are pinching peoples’ fingers. What’s the big deal? Well, what’s interesting is how Tesla plans to fix the problem – as well as whether you can really call it a ‘recall’.

Tesla isn’t recalling the cars in the traditional sense. What they’re going to do is push an over-the-air software update that will “enhance the calibration of the vehicle’s automatic window reversal system behaviour,” as Tesla describes it. That’s right – just like a mobile phone or a computer, Tesla’s just making you do a system update. Welcome to modern motoring, people.
And that’s kind of the point: some critics, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have suggested that calling this a ‘recall’ is a bit misleading. “The terminology is outdated & inaccurate. This is a tiny over-the-air software update. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no injuries,” Musk said in a now-deleted Tweet.
Still, as superficially trivial as this problem might seem, it’s embarrassing that Tesla has to keep recalling (or should we say ‘bug fixing’) their vehicles like this.
RELATED: Tesla’s Build Quality Exposed By Disgruntled Customer
“Traditional automotive suppliers have been getting this right for decades. I remember a “crush the soda can” informational demo at a supplier in the 1990s,” Phillip Koopman, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University and vehicle safety expert relates.
“Some Model 3 years now have an astounding 13 recalls and 4 investigations listed on the NHTSA recall website. Sadly we are now seeing how ‘move fast and break things’ turns out for automotive safety. And there are many years left for age-related issues to crop up.”

Tesla has long sought to be as independent as possible when it comes to its supply chains – a practice that has helped them weather many of the supply chain-related issues that have plagued the auto industry over the last few years, especially the global chip shortage.
At the same time, Tesla’s cars remain plagued by generally poor levels of quality control, especially among US-made vehicles (it’s widely acknowledged that Chinese-made Teslas boast superior build quality to their US-made counterparts). Clearly doing everything themselves isn’t completely working out for them.
Elon Musk has previously called safety regulators “the fun police” but trivialising safety concerns like these – even relatively benign ones like pinched fingers in windows – doesn’t exactly fill us with confidence…

Let’s talk cocktail dress code: are suits obligatory? Or are jeans and a blazer acceptable today? And, in our sportswear obsessed, luxury world, do clean white sneakers cut it? Wondering what to wear is a common concern. Why, there’s black tie, smart casual and business casual already putting you through your dress code paces. So relax, breathe deep. We’re here to put your mind, and wardrobe, at ease. We’ve debunked the cocktail dress code for men once and for all. And put a contemporary spin on cocktail attire for men.
In this cocktail dress code story…
Definition of Cocktail Dress Code For Men
Cocktail gained popularity in the Twenties and Thirties when it became common in wealthier, fashionable households to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and canapés in the hours between day and evening. Back then, social events, activities and ostentatious occasions required men to ‘change’ their kit to be more suitably dressed. And, so a new dress code formed…. cocktail.
Essentially, cocktail is a semi-formal look or outfit that will take you from day to night; bridging the gap between casual daywear, which is too relaxed, and formal evening attire, which is too prim and proper.
In a modern context, the ‘between the hours’ dress code applies to cocktail parties, obviously, but also weddings, anniversaries, formal birthday celebrations and timeless sporting events such as the races. Basically, we’re a little more refinement is required, old chap.
Cocktail Dress Code Do’s & Dont’s

While we’re not ones to set the cocktail dress code style rules in stone, we are indeed big on learning the rules. Knowing the cocktail guidelines means you’re equipped to bend the rules a little (without looking like a sartorial mess). Appeasing your individual style, and mastering the cocktail manual, here are some do’s and don’ts to follow:
- Do go for something tailored. A tuxedo is too much, but a suit or blazer/trousers combo is required.
- Don’t upstage the guest of honour. If you’re attending a birthday or any other occasion in which the spotlight is meant to be on someone specific, leave the bright colours and flashy accessories at home.
- Do add personal touches, but consider them carefully. You do not want to be remembered as the “neon pink jacket guy” from your friend’s wedding.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re ever unsure about what constitutes appropriate attire for an event, ask the person hosting it. They are, after all, the most invested in avoiding confusion and uncomfortable situations.
Still in doubt? It’s always safer to over-dress with cocktail (but still, leave that tuxedo at home).
Key Cocktail Dress Code Pieces
The beauty of cocktail dress for men is that, while it’s a relatively formal dress code, there is still room for creativity and personal interpretation. Here’s what you should be wearing:
Suits & Tailoring

Tailoring means the suit: a two-piece, peak or notch lapel number in a slim fit. Black is suitable but more contemporary still, is navy or grey. Light grey is fresh for a summer wedding while dark grey is the perfect winter look, and is far more sophisticated.
If you know the dress code isn’t super strict, explore colours (always dark, in this case) such as burgundy, olive green or khaki. Patterns should be kept minimal, sticking to windowpane check (small scale) and pinstripes (never chunky or thick).
Not sure about prints? Opt for texture. This is achieved from suit fabric: mohair for a subtle sheen and herringbone or a slub design for a grainy finish.
Finally, it’s not unexpected to see men wearing separates at cocktail attire events. Mix and match jacket and trousers at your leisure, but traditionalists will frown upon denim, even if they’re the made-to-measure, trouser-esque jeans. Keep your bluey’s for daytime drinks with friends.
Cocktail Approved Shirt

Keep the shirt in harmonious tune with your suit or blazer. A block colour in a neutral tone – blue, white or grey – is your safest bet, especially when wearing a checked or striped jacket. Wearing a plain blazer? Look to low-key checks or stripes or even floral jacquard for a romantic edge. Another chic style is a plain black short – no tie – or white for a summer day time feel.
The biggest blunder made with shirting is the collar. Avoid floppy, limp shirt collar types and make sure it’s made from cotton and is crafted from a formal fabric weave. It should feel and look crisp, and sharply pressed on the collar and cuffs. Speaking of which, avoid French cuffs for daytime events, saving them for dapper evening soirees where you really want to impress.
Do Ties/Pocket Squares count as cocktail?

You can now get away with ditching the tie at less formal cocktail events, but at other times it is still a requirement. This is your opportunity to get a little more creative. If you opted for a simple shirt and suit, you can go for a bolder tie.
If your shirt or suit has a pattern, it’s best to choose a simple tie in a complementary colour. It’s a ‘no’ to bow ties (too novelty looking without the presence of a tux), but a big ‘yes’ to pocket squares. Like the tie, the square should be silk and neutral in colour in your jacket is vivacious or patterned and primped if you’ve gone the monochrome manner of dressing.
Cocktail-approved Dress Shoes

When thinking cocktail, go the Oxford shoe. Black and dark brown are superior colour options for the streamlined shoe, while a brogue punch hole design will give you a step up in the texture department, without offending cocktail purists.
Alternatively, monk strap shoes are fittingly cocktail and have secured themselves as footwear mainstay. Loafers – from penny to tassel and even horsebit – should be considered only if your event is on the less formal side. Above all, invest in a new pair if it’s a special event or give tired old leather a fresh polish. And be on your way.
Cocktail-approved Accessories

Saving that embossed, ostrich leather belt for a special occasion? Now’s the time to whip it out. Suede belts are also a nice touch for texture while logo belt buckles like that of Gucci and Hermes are making a comeback, just don’t go for anything cowboy. Cocktail cowboy does have a nice ring to it tho. Eschewing the belt is totally fine too, especially if you’re wearing a waistcoat that obscures the trouser band.
Finally, finish the cocktail look off with calf-length socks (long enough so if you’re seated your leg skin doesn’t show). Stick to socks that compliment your trousers or another colour in your outfits such as tie, shirt or blazer. If you’re feeling brave, coloured or patterned socks could be an opportunity to let your personality shine through.
So there you have it. Whether you’re in Australia, the US or anywhere, this is how you dress cocktail.
Cocktail Dress Code FAQ
Yes. Make sure that your tie complements your suit or shirt - a simple tie for suits with pattern and a bolder one for simple suits. For less formal cocktail events, you can get away without a tie. No. A tuxedo is too formal for a cocktail event. Wear a tailored suit or blazer with a pair of fitted or tailored trousers instead. Remember, no denim! Definitely. A silk pocket square will go nicely with your cocktail dress. Choose a vivid shade to spice up a monochrome outfit and a neutral one to tone down other colors.Do I need to wear a tie with cocktail dress?

There is no shortage of travel advice out there. But not all of it is worth following. Especially the dictum that you should “never take coach tours.”
Bus tours aren’t always bad. Travel guides aren’t all scalpers. Street food doesn’t always need to be navigated with a 10-foot pole. That’s right: though the experts in cargo pants like to think they know everything, not all travel advice needs to be taken to heart. This came to light on Reddit recently, where one user asked the r/travel Reddit community: “What common piece of travel advice do you purposefully ignore?”
“I think Rick Steves [an American travel writer] has done a lot for getting people out of their comfort zones and seeing the world, but the recommendation of nylon tear-away cargo pants, sturdy boots, multi-pocketed hiking shirts, and Saharan sun hats for hanging around a European capital drinking coffee and seeing museums always seemed a bit over the top.”
“You do you, of course, but I always felt most comfortable blending in more and wearing normal clothes unless I’m hitting the mountains.”
Reddit user u/jolros
The question prompted a wide range of responses. One user, for instance, said that they absolutely disagree with the idea that you shouldn’t eat any fresh fruit when you travel.
“Why do you think I even came here?!?!” they said. Others made similar points about street food.
The majority of the responses, however, came to the defence of coach trips. Though our inner travel snob recoiled in horror at the thought, it actually makes a good deal of sense. Take, for example, Reddit user Kingjoe97034‘s take.
RELATED: This ‘Snobbish’ Trait Instantly Outs You As An Unenlightened Traveller
To the tune of 2.8k upvotes, he said: “Sometimes, when you are short on time, a lame-ass bus tour to Pompeii or the Acropolis is better than planning it yourself.”
“It’s great to be a cool and savvy world traveller, but occasionally, it is actually fine to do the lame tour thing.”
Reddit user Kingjoe97034
Reddit user r/uber_shnitz chimed in too, adding: “I used to think they [organised excursions] were lame too, but honestly having someone explain to you the history and cultural significance of a site is better than me googling it as I try to line up trains to get back to my Airbnb/hostel/hotel.”

Not to be outdone, a further Reddit user wrote: “I love that you can ask them other questions too. That was how I learned there were different currencies in Cuba, the tourist kind, and the local kind. I forgot HOW we got onto the topic but I learned so much more about history and culture by having a guide. And she was quick to point out ‘tourist trap’ restaurants, and gave way better recommendations that [sic] I had originally planned on eating at.”
RELATED: John Cleese Quote Sums Up Why Travel Is So Important
Two other stories penetrated our brains in a meaningful way. The first was about a small group tour of Italy, which changed how one Reddit user looked at “lame ass tours” forever.
“I did an small Italy trip a few years ago with my son,” the Reddit user said. “I didn’t want to deal with renting a car, but still wanted to see a bit of Tuscany, so I (begrudgingly) booked a wine tasting tour out of Florence. Best decision I could have made. Small group with someone else driving so I could just sit back and enjoy the overly generous tasting pours. We still talk about how fun it was.”
The second story involves a Reddit user sharing how they managed to get themselves ten precious minutes in the Sistine Chapel all on their own. How? Read the exchange below.
“Did an early entry tour at the Vatican and it was money well spent,” one Reddit user said. “We almost had the place to ourselves.”
RELATED: Oxford Professor’s Brilliant Hack To Make Plane Food Taste Better
Another Reddit user then came in swinging. They wrote: “That is absolutely the way to see the Vatican. Before it was a formal practice that they sold tours for, my mom used to drag me there at 4 AM so we’d be first in line for the day, and we’d sprint through the museum so we could have ten precious minutes in the Sistine Chapel with no one but us and a guard.”
Holy smokes. Genius. Why didn’t we think of that?

Attention craft beer enthusiasts: you may have a few tinnies in your fridge that are ‘too alcoholic’. And yes, that’s apparently a problem…
Ballistic Beer Co., the Australian brewery known for their award-winning craft beer, has issued a recall notice for a few of their pale ale varieties. And Aussies who bought the affected pale ales are being urged not to drink them.
This is because, according to Food Standards Australia, secondary fermentation has occurred. What does that mean? Well, it means that the pale ales contain excess alcohol and carbonation which “may cause illness/injury if consumed.”

The affected pale ales were available from Liquorland stores in QLD and NSW, Vintage Cellars’ stores in NSW, ACT, VIC, NT and TAS, and First Choice, Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores nationally; as well as from independent liquor retailers across the country.
If you’re wondering what exact pale ale varieties were affected it was Ballistic’s Hawaiian Haze Pale Ale 375ml can with best before dates from 05/10/22 to 28/02/23, Hawaiian Haze IPA 375ml can with the best before date 15/12/22 and Reef Pale Ale 375ml can with the best before date 04/02/23. All of these beers were available to purchase as single cans, in a four pack or in a carton of sixteen.

Food Standards Australia advised all “consumers should not drink or open this product and should dispose of it safely.” They also said, “Please contact Ballistic Beer Co. for safe disposal instructions and to arrange for reimbursement.”
Knowing what Aussies are like, we’re going to bet that there will be some who have the affected Ballistic beers at home and will be tempted to try them. We’re not your mum (or the FSA) but nonetheless: please don’t…

The following article was produced in partnership with Bushmills Irish Whiskey, the official spirits partner of DMARGE House.
There’s never been a better time to be into whiskey. One of the few positives to come out of the long lockdowns that defined the last two years was that Australians of all ages and persuasions have been drinking ‘more and better’ – with pubs and clubs off the menu, we’ve been teaching ourselves about high-end alcohol.
The result? Aussies have never been more switched on when it comes to spirits. We’ve been making tropical cocktails during lockdowns instead of going on holiday and teaching ourselves about high-end dark spirits at home… As a result, we’ve all become real aficionados, especially when it comes to whiskey. This trend has continued now that we’ve been allowed out into the world: we’ve all become whiskey snobs, trying to impress friends by ordering obscure drops.
Despite this, many whisk(e)y fans – both novices and experienced drinkers alike – remain hung up on Scotch single malts. While it’s true that there’s an abundance of delicious single malts coming out of Scotland, particularly right now, Scotland is by no means the only region making nice single malts. Not by a long shot.
Irish whiskey has always been popular in Australia but in recent years, Aussies have been opening up to the smoothness of Irish single malts. Indeed, some of the best, most interesting single malts on the market have been coming out of the Emerald Isle – most of which are being made by Bushmills, Australia’s #1 Irish single malt and the official spirits partner of DMARGE House.

Bushmills is a distillery quite unlike any other. Located on County Antrim’s rugged coastline – just near the famous Giant’s Causeway – Bushmills is one of only a handful of distilleries in the world where all of the distillation, maturation, bottling and shipping happens all under one roof.
It also happens to be the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, with official records stretching back to 1608. 400 years of history means they’ve got unparalleled know-how when it comes to making whiskey.
Just because they’ve been around a while doesn’t mean they’re stuck in their ways, though – far from it. Indeed, Bushmills is easily one of the most innovative whiskey distilleries in the world; responsible for some of the most cutting-edge cask finishes and distillation techniques on the planet, Bushmills is doing some exciting stuff, especially in the single malt space.
But what if you’re looking for a place to start? Maybe you’re new to single malts, or Irish single malts – or perhaps you’re a connoisseur who’s looking for a benchmark to test the rest of Bushmill’s diverse range of single malts.
Well, let us point you in the direction of Bushmills’ 10 Year Old Single Malt. This has quickly become one of our favourite drops here at DMARGE, and for good reason: rich, complex, buttery smooth and highly versatile, it often gets called ‘liquid gold’ and we think that’s a very apt characterisation.

The “youngest” of Bushmills’ single malts, 10 Year Old is triple-distilled from 100% malted barley and matured for a minimum of 10 years in former Oloroso Sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks. These casks bless it with a heady mix of honey, vanilla and milk chocolate aromas, which foreshadow how spiced honey, sweet toffee and zesty fruit flavours dance on your tongue once sipped.
10 Year Old also happens to be the personal favourite of Bushmills’ newly appointed master blender Alex Thomas, who suggests it can be served neat, over ice or even frozen if you’re feeling adventurous.
Attendees at DMARGE House will also have the chance to try Bushmills 10 Year Old and Bushmills Black Bush in a variety of exclusive cocktail creations served on the day, as well as the opportunity to learn even more about the storied and innovative distillery that is Bushmills.
All in all, Bushmills 10 Year Old is the perfect introduction to the world of single malts. Elegant and approachable with the reassurance of an age statement yet dynamic and intriguing enough to entice even the most seasoned whiskey lovers, there are few better bottles you could hope to add to your collection in 2022.
Find out more about Bushmills’ amazing range of single malts at DMARGE House on the 5th of October at Ovolo Woolloomooloo in Sydney.

Anyone who’s up to date with the most popular television shows on TV right now would have noticed some weird relationships have taken flight… Spoiler alert: the following article contains major spoilers for both Rick and Morty Season 6 and House of the Dragon.
Monday night is currently my favourite night of the week. That’s because when I get home from work, new episodes of both Rick and Morty and the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon are awaiting me.
However, after a few days of processing, I’ve realised the most recent episodes of each show feature some really unconventional relationships. For starters, Bethic Twinstinct – the third episode of Rick and Morty’s sixth season – centred around Beth having an affair with her own clone.
To quote Rick, “Oh my god Beth, there’s masturbating and then there’s ~masturbating~”. Ultimately, the entire time I watched the episode I kept wondering, ‘Is this incest or an extreme form of self-love?’
Honestly, I’m still not so sure, but there’s no denying it’s a weird relationship that’s never really been explored onscreen before. Especially when you throw in the fact that Beth’s husband, Jerry was completely okay with the affair; so much so, that he tried to get it on with a version of himself from another dimension…

And speaking of incest, let’s talk about House of the Dragon. We all know that Princess Rhaenyra and her uncle, Prince Daemon are going to get together, right? In the latest episode, Rhaenyra even challenged Daemon and said, “Cut through my father’s Kingsguard, take me to Dragonstone and make me your wife.”
While incest is nothing new to the Game of Thrones universe, what is new is that people seem to be rooting for it…? Whenever twins Jamie and Cersei Lannister declared their romantic love for each other in Game of Thrones, viewers instantly voiced their disgust online.
But this time round, viewers are seemingly supporting it. For instance, on Twitter, multiple people have expressed that, while they know it’s wrong, they want Rhaenyra and Damon’s relationship to blossom. As for me, I feel like it goes without saying but – I do not condone incest.
However, I can’t deny that there’s incredible chemistry between the actors Milly Alcock and Matt Smith and that chemistry does mess ever so slightly with my perception of the relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon…
After watching these two shows one thing is clear though: television is slowly pushing boundaries and exploring relationships beyond the norm. Therefore, I can’t help but wonder what weird relationship is going to pop up on my screen next; who knows? Maybe Marge will finally leave Homer for Sideshow Bob or Mr Burns in an upcoming The Simpsons episode…

The 46th President of the United States is a noted revhead – but his new passion is electric cars.
Biden recently found himself being interviewed by Daniel Mac – a social media star who’s become famous for his candid clips where he runs up to people in nice cars and asks them “what do you do for a living?” – while test-driving Cadillac Lyriq, the iconic American brand’s first fully-electric production car, at the Detroit Auto Show.
‘Uncle Joe’ rather humbly describes his job as “being married to Jill Biden” in the video, and uses the video to spruik his electrification policy, saying he wants to “make sure we’re making a lot more electric vehicles in America”.
The sleek Caddy is a far cry from the heavily-armoured custom Cadillac limousine known as ‘The Beast’ that typically ferries around US Presidents. Indeed, the fact that Biden was even allowed to drive the car was rather surprising: normally, the POTUS isn’t allowed to drive a car whilst in office as it’s a safety risk.
WATCH Joe Biden meet Daniel Mac below.
Biden is a noted car guy. Indeed, his prize possession is a green over tan 1967 Corvette Stingray convertible that he received as a wedding present from his father, who owned a car dealership back in the day.
RELATED: Joe Biden’s Classic Corvette Is Undrivable
Lately, however, he’s been all about EVs. As part of a broader suite of environmental policies, the Biden Administration is pushing to have 50% of all vehicles sold in the US to be electric by 2030 and has introduced a variety of policies meant to stimulate American EV production.
Earlier this week, Biden announced he was earmarking US$7.5 billion to build a nationwide network of 500,000 EV chargers and has previously expressed plans to replace the US government’s fleet of cars and trucks with locally-assembled electric vehicles, for example.
Biden estimated his administration is investing a total of $135 billion “to advance America’s electric vehicle future” between all the legislation passed this year, saying “I believe we can own the future of manufacturing… American manufacturing is back, Detroit is back, America’s back.”

He’s expressed that the advancements in EVs give him a “sense of optimism… Although I like the speed, too,” he was quick to add.
He’s also said that he’ll be the first in line to buy the fully-electric Corvette when it hits the market in 2035. Hopefully he’s still around by then…

The longtime producers of James Bond have revealed they’re “nowhere near” casting an actor as the new 007. But they are focused on the next Bond villain…
The fact that we’re all desperate to know who will be the next actor to play James Bond is a testament to how popular the Bond franchise is. But, sadly, it looks like we’re still a ways away from knowing.
Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, who have produced every Bond film for the past thirty years, recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about casting the next 007 spy… And Broccoli basically said we shouldn’t expect an announcement any time soon.
“When we get to a point like we are now, we have to think about the trajectory of the Bond films and the storylines and where we want to take them. So, that’s really the main focus at the beginning.”
“Once we have a sense of where we want to go, then we’ll start thinking about casting. We’re not just casting someone for one film. We’re casting someone, hopefully, for a decade, at least. It’s a big decision to make, and we’re nowhere near making that decision.”
Barbara Broccoli
Broccoli then went on to reveal that they’re currently focused on the next Bond villain rather than Bond himself because the villain is the character that drives the story.

“We always sit down with our writers, and we start by thinking about ‘What is the world afraid of?’ We start by thinking about, ‘Who’s the Bond villain?’ We try to focus on that as the sort of uber story…”
We’d personally love to see Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy or Jamie Campell Bower – who’s admitted he’d love to play a Bond villain – as the next foe Bond goes against.
Of course, there are an array of actors who have admitted they’d love to play James Bond – Miles Teller, for instance. Plus, many actors – like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill – have been fan-cast as the next Bond. But Broccoli advised any actor wanting the role needs to seriously think about the obligations that come with being James Bond.
“Any actor that would be thinking about this has got to think about how it would change their life. Daniel [Craig] certainly was reluctant when we first approached him…”
Barbara Broccoli
“You become an ambassador for the cinema and people recognize you as being associated with the character. It’s got a lot of different elements to it. But the time commitment is certainly a long-term commitment, and not everybody is willing to do that; multiple pictures over many years. Daniel’s done sixteen years’ time.”
At this rate, it feels like it’ll be sixteen years until Broccoli and Wilson reveal who the next Bond will be. At least in the meantime, we have the major James Bond announcement that Ian Fleming publications have promised to give us on October 5th.

Formula 1 drivers are already known for their insanely gruelling workout regimes… But to prepare for the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, some drivers are going to risky extremes.
Since its addition to the F1 calendar in 2018, the Singapore Grand Prix has carved out a dedicated following. The Marina Bay Street Circuit, the first-ever night race in F1, is widely considered to be one of the most challenging and unique tracks in the world – in no small part thanks to Singapore’s weather.
The Southeast Asian city state has an incredibly humid tropical rainforest climate, with temperatures averaging around 33°C during the day and 26°C at night. Shock tropical thunderstorms are also a regular occurrence. Singapore’s weather can already be tough to deal with as a tourist, let alone as an athlete.
Then, consider that F1 car cockpits are poorly ventilated and can reach up to 60°C even in cold weather… Oh, and most teams are running cars without drinks systems this year. No wonder drivers are trying some insane workouts to acclimatise themselves to Singapore.
Top drivers Carlos Sainz, George Russell and Sergio Pérez have all taken to Instagram to show off how they’ve been working out in steam rooms to get used to Singapore’s steamy weather. Sainz and Russell have taken things to particular extremes, both of them hauling exercise bikes into the steam rooms to work out. Russell even wore a rain jacket whilst on the bike in the steam room to make himself sweat even harder. Madness.
While these workouts are definitely impressive, they’re also not something you should try at home… In fact, working out in a steam room could be deadly.
Exercising in heat increases the load on the body’s cardiovascular system, as the body can’t send as much blood flow to the exercising muscles. On top of that, steam rooms dehydrate you much quicker than simply working out in high heat alone.
F1 drivers are incredibly fit already and have a minute, granular understanding of their physical limits – but for us average joes, it would be very easy to work out past our limits working out in a steam room without even knowing it. It’s a surefire recipe for a heart attack, basically.
It’s also not exactly good for gym equipment like exercise bikes to be taken into a steam room… It’s also very easy to injure yourself in a slippery, wet steam room.
Not all F1 drivers are getting on board the steam room workout trend, though – in fact, Charles Leclerc has gone the complete opposite route and is dabbling in cryotherapy. Yet another bizarre Ferrari strategy call…
