Who is Patrick Cripps?

Patrick Cripps is a professional Australian Rules footballer who plays in the midfield for Carlton FC in the AFL. He is the team’s captain.

After being drafted with the No. 13 overall pick in 2013 AFL Draft by Carlton, Cripps would go on to play his first game against Melbourne in round 4 in 2014.

He is a former Leigh Matthews Trophy holder, for the “most valuable player” in the league for 2019, and the current recipient of the Brownlow Medal for 2022.

He has also made the All-Australian team on three separate occasions, as well as a four-time John Nicolls Medal winner for “best and fairest” of Carlton FC.

Early Life

Patrick Cripps was Western Australia’s vice-captain in the 2013 AFL Under-18 Championships. Image: @WAFL

Patrick Cripps was born in Perth on 18 March 1995 but grew up in the small farming town of Northampton.

He would later move back to Perth, joining East Freemantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League for juniors and colts.

Cripps was relatively small for a midfielder as he was growing up. He said, “I was the smallest at my footy team and then probably 16 to 18 I shot up to 190. And once I got to [Carlton] I grew another five centimetres.”

This growth spurt helped him as he got older, “I still feel like I’ve got all the traits of a small mid, just from growing up.”

He represented Western Australian at the 2013 AFL Under-18 Championships as the team’s vice-captain.

Prior to the draft, Cripps was – by his own admission – slightly out of shape and used to eat “whatever was in the fridge”. He came last out of potential midfield draftees at the 2013 AFL draft camp at the 3K run.

But the one thing that impressed scouts, specifically Carlton’s, was his ability to get the ball, a trait which he is still known for today.

Professional Career

Patrick Cripps was selected with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 AFL Draft by Carlton FC.

Having attended boarding school at Aquinas College in Perth, he was not worried about the relocation to Melbourne. Some scouts were worried that he would want to move back to Western Australia if chosen.

His debut came against a shock loss to bottom-of-the-ladder Melbourne in Round 4, 2014. Unfortunately for Cripps – and Carlton – the young midfielder fractured his leg, only playing three matches in his debut season.

He came back strong for the 2015 season though, dropping five kilos and establishing himself as one of the league’s top inside midfields. That year, despite Carlton winning the wooden spoon, ‘Crippa’ finished second in the AFL Rising Star Award.

In 2015, Patrick Cripps also received his first John Nicholls Medal for Carlton’s “best and fairest” player, having won four in total.

Cripps continued his stellar performances for the next few seasons, and in 2018 finished second in AFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting.

That season, he broke the record for most contested possessions won in a single season with 388. 2018 was also the year he was made co-captain of Carlton, alongside defender Sam Docherty.

It wouldn’t be long until achieved MVP though, as in 2019, he would deliver his best season yet, averaging 8.5 clearances, 17 contested possessions and 6.2 tackles a game on his way to the Leigh Matthews Trophy.

Personal accolades kept coming for Cripps, as in 2022, he was awarded he coveted Brownlow Medal for the league’s “best and fairest” player, winning the award by one vote.

He was also voted on to the All-Australian Team, the third of his career.

Despite all his personal success, Carlton have struggled as a team, never making the playoffs during Cripps’ tenure.

Patrick Cripps’ Salary

In 2021, Cripps signed a six-year contract, which averages out between $900,000 and $950,000 a year.

There was some confusion surrounding the contract, with some outlets reporting that Cripps had taken pay-cut of around $200,000 so that Carlton could add more talent to the team.

However, these rumours were dispelled shortly after. He is the Blues’ highest paid player.

Patrick Cripps’ Fiancée

Patrick Cripps got engaged to Monique Fontana after over five years together. Image: @PatrickCripps

Patrick Cripps has been dating girlfriend Monique Fontana for over five years. The two got engaged back in March, with Cripps sharing the news on Instagram.

She is a registered nurse and outspoken mental health advocate, having struggled herself with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Fontana started her own Instagram page discussing her mental health struggles but was subjected to cyber-bullying online. She has since removed the page.

Her and Patrick Cripps stayed strong throughout the whole ordeal, with the Carlton captain giving his fiancé a kiss while going up to receive his Brownlow Medal in September.

How A Group Of Australian Athletes Found Purpose Post-Retirement
How A Group Of Australian Athletes Found Purpose Post-Retirement

For many athletes, once they hang up their gloves, boots or other paraphernalia, it may seem easy to integrate with ‘regular’ life and put their sporting days behind them. But for many athletes, completely turning their back on their sporting days is never an option.

Some may go into coaching roles, others may turn to personal training or gym ownership. But one small team of former Australian sporting heroes have managed to maintain their love of staying active and do some good with it, by raising money for charities around the world.

Known as Athletes For Life, the troupe of former Aussie stars has come together and put themselves through a number of challenges since it was founded in 2019. These challenges include various running marathons and long-distance cycling events, and the next one on the calendar is the New York Marathon on November 7th, which they are running to raise funds for Team For Kids.

Athletes For Life was co-founded by Nick Youngquest, a former NRL winger who played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. After Nick retired from rugby league around 2011, he took to running as a means to stay active. This snowballed into running marathons and eventually, in 2019, he decided to recruit other former athletes to join him on his quest.

Nick told DMARGE, “We started in 2019 and had plans to run the NY marathon in 2020, with my buddy, Mitch Doust. But that didn’t work out too well, as you can imagine.”

“I had been running marathons for years and supporting charities while doing so, and Mitch asked me why I do it. When I reflected, it had been the thing that filled a void for me since I had retired from rugby league.”

“It gave me some purpose, gave me structure and attainable goals. We both liked the idea of bringing athletes together around a common cause and our physical well-being, not just former athletes telling war stories at the pub over 20 years.”

Nick Youngquest

“Although, it has to be said, Athletes For Life was 100% created over a few beers,” he admits.

Image: Athletes For Life

It’s Nick’s admission of filling a void that is the backbone of Athletes For Life. As he says, “the stories out there of former athletes’ difficulties in retirement are aplenty.” He also mentions the story of Paul Green, who tragically took his own life in August 2022, as just one example of how he hopes to help change the landscape of sport and to encourage anyone – although it must be said, men in particular – to lean on those around them if they need support.

RELATED: How To Make Your Mates Comfortable Sharing Their Feelings With You

“The years of honing your craft and dedicating your entire self to the one thing you love is a testament to elite sportspeople, but can also be of detriment to some in the transition,” he says.

“Loss of worth and purpose are common and trying to find a new meaning when sport is no longer available at the elite level… We want to help athletes discover and develop identities beyond the playing arena to help them derive value in various ways.”

Nick Youngquest

“Trying to see sport as what you do and not who you are is important, these people are fathers, sons, mates and sisters, but often they associate with the role of ‘sportsperson’ so heavily at the expense of these other roles. We hope to impact this.”

Indeed, Ben Lucas, former Cronulla Sharks player and now founder of Flow Athletic echoed Nick’s comments, saying, “I think Athletes For Life is a great initiative, as a lot of ex-athletes, including myself can understand the feeling of having a lack of purpose and having to start from square one again when they retire.”

“You go from the highest highs of the intensity of the game and being with your team to feeling a bit displaced.”

Ben Lucas

Since Ben retired from rugby league, he “started opening a number of PT studios. I worked around the clock on this business but as it was a franchise model, I didn’t get much say in terms of creativity and adding my own spin to it.”

“I definitely needed an outlet and I ended up running 35 marathons + ultras in the space of 5 years, while still running those businesses in order to give myself purpose. I found purpose when I launched Flow Athletic with Kate Kendall, but I still needed that challenge and drive and that’s what Athletes For Life is essentially trying to do for ex-athletes.”

So far, the vast majority of the Athletes For Life team are former NRL players, including Ben and the four Burgess brothers. But Nick has been able to recruit a number of other keen sportsmen and women, including big wave surfer and personal trainer Dean Jamieson as well as model and running enthusiast James Lorenzo. Nick hopes to eventually recruit athletes from anywhere and everywhere.

Ben also hopes this goal to come true, telling DMARGE, “It’s a great cause for connection and mental health, and ultimately the more the merrier.”

“Being from a rugby league background, it has been pretty easy to engage players from the NRL, but we intend to make this more global,” Nick relates.

“Our idea would be to have elite sportspeople from a range of sports come together to amplify the ability to raise money through running marathons and establishing a community of athletes from all walks of life, bonded by the commonality of sports.”

“Sport is a powerful platform to bring about change, so we want to have a positive impact on the lives of athletes who engage and the next generation of kids who look up to them.”

Nick Youngquest
Image: Dean Jamieson

For Dean Jamieson, founder of Lean Performance Gym in Taren Point, Sydney, and big wave surfer who has chased swell to the likes of “Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, Indonesia and around Australia,” joining Athletes For Life was a no-brainer.

“Nick and I have been friends for a long time; since we were kids,” he tells DMARGE.

“I had never run in an endurance event before, not even the Sutherland to Surf. In January 2022, the opportunity to run the Sydney Half Marathon came up with the Athletes For Life crew, which gave me just 4 months to train for 21.1km. I thought ‘ok, let’s do it.'”

“Once the training and race had been completed, the team asked if I was interested in running the New York Marathon. Initially, I thought, ‘Man, I don’t know if I can, I don’t know if I can run that far.'”

“But I agreed because I wanted to commit to it and show some leadership, I wanted to get outside my comfort zone and go somewhere I had never been with my training.”

“I wanted to show people that by applying consistency to your training, following a good program and turning up week in week out, you really can achieve things you didn’t think were possible.”

Dean Jamieson

“For me, running has helped keep me focused on training, knowing I was running the NY marathon has motivated me to get up in the cold and continue to train 4 days per week in winter. Knowing I have to run 42.2km has meant I wanted to miss zero workouts to ensure I’m not just physically ready, but mentally ready too.”

“I’m really proud to be running the New York Marathon with the Athletes for Life team and raising funds for Team for Kids. This gives the marathon a greater purpose and helps contribute to a cause far bigger than just myself.”

Ben, too, has found running to be invaluable for his mental health. “I had a pretty hard time during lockdown over the past two years,” he admits.

“Running a fitness business that was forced to close with a family and 20 employees in tow was the toughest time of my life. After gaining around 10kgs, I decided to set myself a challenge of 5k a day for 365 days. I’m now about a month away from completing it.”

RELATED: Study Proves Reveals Why Exercise Is So Damn Important

“It really helped my mindset and mental health and I have lost most of the weight too. Running has been my go to for my mind and mindset ever since I left footy. I absolutely love it for mental health, fitness and for seeing the world,” Ben says.

The Athletes For Life New York Marathon team will be raising funds for Team For Kids, a New York-based charity which, as Nick says, “develop and deploy programs for youth across the US. Some of these kids are only exposed to organised physical activity through these programs, something that is very different from our experience in Australia where we participated in so many sports as a kid.”

Image: Athletes For Life

You can donate to Athletes For Life here. If you’re keen to get involved with the team, Nick says they’re working on a series of online coaching programs, due to be launched in 2023, that “are designed for transformation, and that are suitable to a broader audience and use the ‘athlete influence’ to guide participants along the journey.”

How Did Rishi Sunak Make His Money?
How Did Rishi Sunak Make His Money?

Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party, also happens to be the richest Prime Minister in the UK’s history, as well as the only PM to have a higher net worth than the monarchy.

But how did Rishi Sunak make his money? And how did he end up as UK Prime Minister?

Read on to find out how Rishi Sunak made his money, his political career, height and more.

Rishi Sunak Quick facts

Name: Rishi Sunak
Age: 42
DoB: 12 May 1980
Nationality: British
Birthplace: Southampton, England
Height: 5 feet 6 inches / 170 cm
Weight: 11 st / 70 kg
Net Worth: £730 million (AU $1.3 billion)

Who is Rishi Sunak?

Rishi Sunak is a British Politician and the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party. He is the first person of colour and the first Hindu to occupy the position.

An Oxford University graduate, he worked as an analyst for investment bank Goldman Sachs, before becoming a hedge fund manager.

In 2014, Rishi Sunak took his first step into politics, selected as the Conservative (Tory) candidate for Richmond (Yorks), a constituency in North Yorkshire.

Following the Tory landslide during the 2019 General Election, Rishi Sunak became Chancellor of the Exchequer During the Covid-19 pandemic. During his tenure, he famously introducing a furlough scheme, which provided grants for employers to pay for staff.

Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak ran for the vacant position, losing to fellow Conservative MP Liz Truss. She left office after only 44 days, leaving the position open for him to fill on 25 October 2022.

Early Life

Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton on 12 May 1980. He is of Punjabi descent, with his grandparents moving to the UK in the 1960’s.

Growing up in a wealthy family, Rishi Sunak attended Winchester College, an independent boarding school, where he was head boy.

From there, he read philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) – as many politicians do – at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating with a first in 2001. He later graduated with an MBA from Stanford University in 2006.

Business Career

Out of university, Rishi Sunak worked as an analyst for investment bank Goldman Sachs for three years until 2004.

He later went on to become a hedge fund manager in London, where he became a partner in 2006, and later worked for a fund in California in 2009.

From 2013-2015, he was also the director of a venture capitalist firm, owned by his father in-law, Indian businessman Narayana Murthy.

Early Political Career

After finishing with his business career, Rishi Sunak ventured into politics, becoming the Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in October 2014.

Rishi Sunak supported the ‘Brexit’ in the 2016 EU Referendum, which saw the United Kingdom leave the European Union, citing the potential to create tax-free “freeports.”

He was re-elected in the 2017 and 2019 UK General Elections and put forward his support for Boris Johnson, during the 2019 Conservative Party leadership contest.

Chancellor

Rishi Sunak resigned from the position of Chancellor on 5 July 2022.

Rishi Sunak’s support of Boris Johnson led to him being appointing him as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020 ,as part of Mr Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle.

His time as Chancellor was tumultuous – to put it very lightly – aligning near-perfectly with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was integral in introducing a furlough scheme to the UK, which gave employers money to pay eighty percent of staff wages during the pandemic. The cost was estimated to be as high as £14 billion a month, before stopping in September 2021.

He also famously introduced the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, which aimed to boost the hospitality industry, by subsidising food and drink in pubs, cafes and restaurants by fifty percent. Whether it made a difference or not, is debated – some highlight the rise in Covid infections during this time – but half-price McDonald’s was pretty good while it lasted.

Rishi Sunak was also implicated in the “party gate” scandal during this time, where he was found to have broken Covid-19 Lockdown restrictions by attending a gathering in Parliament when meeting others indoors was forbidden.

He resigned from the position on 5 July 2022 following the way the Conservative Party handled allegations of sexual assault against Tory MP Chris Pincher.

Campaign for Prime Minister

Following Boris Johnson’s resignation a few days later, Rishi Sunak immediately declared that he would be running to be the next Prime Minister.

During the campaign a video emerged, originally from a BBC documentary in 2001, which pictured Rishi Sunak claiming he had no working class friends. He also claimed that when in Parliament, he took money from deprived urban areas.

He, and then-foreign secretary Liz Truss emerged as the two final candidates. Rishi Sunak lost the leadership election, with Liz Truss winning almost sixty percent of the members’ vote.

However, Liz Truss stepped down from her position, after only 44 days in office. Mr Sunak gained enough support from Members of the House of Commons to stand for election. With no other candidates left in the race, Rishi Sunak was made Prime Minister of the UK on 25 October 2022.

This made him the UK’s third Prime Minister in just over three months.

Where did Rishi Sunak make his money?

Rishi Sunak is the richest prime minister in the history of the United Kingdom, with an estimated net worth of £730 million (AU $1.3 billion).

Obviously working as a financial analyst and hedge fund manager makes a pretty penny. According to The Times, Sunak was a multi-millionaire by the time he was in his mid-twenties.

As the Prime Minister, he is also entitled to an annual salary of £164,080 (AU $293,380) a year.

However, the main source of his family’s net worth is actually from his father-in-law Narayana Murthy, a billionaire, who founded IT company InfoSys. He is one of the richest men in India, with an estimated net worth of approximately $4.5 billion (AU $7 billion)

Who is Rishi Sunak’s wife?

Rishi Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, heiress to her father’s fortune. She has a stake in her father’s company, is the director of a venture capitalist firm and owns her own fashion label Akshata Designs.

Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murthy met while studying at Stanford University. The pair married in Bangalore, India in 2009.

Together, their combined net worth is greater than the monarchy. Before her death, Queen Elizabeth II was thought to have a total net worth of £370 million (AU $662 million). This is the only time in the UK’s history that a Prime Minister is worth more than the monarch.

How many properties does Rishi Sunak have?

Rishi’s North Yorkshire mansion includes a swimming pool, ornamental lake, gym and tennis court.

Mr Sunak and his wife have four homes worth an estimated £15 million (AU $26.8 million). Two of their homes are in London, including a £7 million (AU $12.5 million) home in Kensington and another property which is used so that relatives can stay there.

They also own a 12 acres-sized mansion in North Yorkshire which includes a swimming pool, ornamental lake, gym and tennis court. This is used at the family’s holiday home.

Finally, the couple have a penthouse apartment in California, supposedly looking over the set where Baywatch was filmed.

With all that money, comes a lot of nice places to live.

Rishi Sunak’s Height

When Rishi Sunak speaks live in Parliament, or during press conferences he very much commands the room. I think we speak for everyone when we say he gives off during “tall-man” energy.

However, you may be surprised to know that Rishi Sunak is very slight in stature, standing at only five foot six.

Given he has been both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the United Kingdom, that all but confirms that size doesn’t matter!

Who Are The Socceroos Playing In The 2022 FIFA World Cup?
Who Are The Socceroos Playing In The 2022 FIFA World Cup?

The Socceroos will take to the field at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, in less than a month and Australia will be hoping their team can make it out of the group stage for the first time since 2006.

The men in green and gold have a tough draw this time out in Group D, facing off against Tunisia, Denmark and a blockbuster opening game against defending champions France.

Both Denmark and France were in Australia’s group for the last FIFA World Cup in 2018, and back then, the Socceroos managed a 1-1 draw with the Danes and a 2-1 loss to eventual winner France. The Soccerroos may need to do better than that this year if they want any chance of winning the huge $42 million jackpot for lifting the trophy.

So, how will the Socceroos squad fare come kick-off in Qatar? Read on as DMARGE breaks down all the Socceroos’ opponents and the predicted results for each game.

France

Antoine Griezmann scored a penalty as France beat Australia 2-1 in the group stages of the 2018 World Cup. Image: @Socceroos
  • November 23
  • 6.00 a.m. kick-off AEST

The Socceroos couldn’t have been dealt a much worse hand for their opening game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They play current champions France, who look to be the first country since Brazil – in 1958 and 1962 – to win back-to-back World Cups.

When the pair squared off in the group stages in 2018, the Socceroos were massive underdogs, but still put on a good showing. An Antoine Griezmann penalty put France ahead, before the Socceroos got a penalty of their own, which captain Mile Jedinak converted from the spot. The game looked to be finishing a draw, before an Australian own goal broke Aussie fans’ hearts.

The Socceroos will be underdogs again, especially with superstar Kylian Mbappé and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema likely starting for France. The Australian defence will need to be watertight to keep the French forwards at bay.

However, France are also guilty of letting in their fair share of goals, and with star defender Rafael Varane potentially side-lined for the first game, France’s defence could be even more vulnerable this year. The likes of Jason Cummings, Jamie Maclaren and Adam Taggart – if picked – will be looking to exploit this potential defence weakness.

There are also other saving graces for Australian fans. Firstly, France are by no means surging going into the tournament; of the eight games they played in 2022, they have only won three, having lost three and drawn the other two.

Also, when looking back at the performances of previous World Cup winners in the tournament after they were victorious, it often ends badly. Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and Germany in 2018 all crashed out in the group stages, despite winning the prior tournaments.

Will history repeat itself and see Australia beating France at the get-go? It is still unlikely, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for this one.

Predicted Result: 2-1 France

Tunisia

Tunisia were beaten 5-1 off of five-time World Cup winners Brazil in their most recent friendly. Image: @Fédération Tunisienne de Football
  • November 26
  • 9.00 p.m. kick-off AEST

In their second game of the World Cup, the Socceroos face off against Tunisia.

The Tunisians have enjoyed decent results heading into the tournament. In 2022, they were victorious in the Kirin Cup Soccer, beating Japan and Chile to lift the trophy.  Last year they also reached both the final of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup held in Qatar– eventually losing to Algeria 2-0 – and the quarter finals of the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

However, they were just thumped 5-1 off of World Cup favourites Brazil, which may knock their confidence a little heading into the tournament.

Despite what this result suggests, where Tunisia shine is with their defence. Behind defence talisman and Serie A centre-back Dylan Bronn, the Tunisians kept seven clean sheets in 2022. As such, Australia will have to be clinical in attack and take what little chances they are given if they are to succeed in this game.

The 2022 World Cup may also be the coming-out party for young Tunisian Manchester United attacking midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, as he looks to make his stamp on the world stage. Trent Salisbury, Miloš Degenek and other Socceroos defenders will look to lock him down to stop any Tunisian chances at the other end.

Realistically, this is the game the Australian’s have the best chance of winning, and if the Socceroos are able to score early, they may be able to hold off Tunisia’s weaker attack for the rest of the game.

Predicted result: 1-0 Australia

Denmark

Christian Eriksen scored in Denmark’s 1-1- draw with Australia at the 2018 World Cup. Image: @Socceroos
  • December 1
  • 2.00 a.m. kick-off AEST

Denmark are another team that the Socceroos played in the 2018 World Cup. A Christian Eriksen thunderbolt and Mile Jedinak penalty saw the teams draw the game one apiece.

The Danes have looked pretty strong in 2022, beating France twice, but dropping games to both Croatia and the Netherlands. A semi-final run in the 2020 European Football Championship last year also showed what they are capable of.

They have a sturdy backline led by Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen, Simon Kjaer and high flying full-back Joakim Mæhle, which makes them dangerous on the counter. A healthy Christian Eriksen is also a scare for the Socceroos and might be what Denmark need to take them further in this year’s tournament.

The Danes may end up being Australia’s hardest game, and the Socceroos will need to be at their absolute best to have any chance of beating them. It could be a long night for Australian captain and goalkeeper Matt Ryan if they are not.

The Matildas were able to do it in a recent friendly, now its time for the Socceroos to do the same.

Predicted result: 2-0 Denmark

8 Best Beard Trimmers Australia 2022 | Tried & Tested By Blokes
8 Best Beard Trimmers Australia 2022 | Tried & Tested By Blokes

Having a feature-packed beard trimmer to hand in the bathroom is an absolute necessity for Australian men. While some men may want to rock either a full beard or the clean-shaven look, the vast majority will sport some form of facial hair that, understandably, needs to be tamed on a regular basis.

Ensuring you give your beard or stubble some regular maintenance can make all the difference between looking completely unkempt or a well-groomed modern gentleman. Fortunately for you, we’ve rounded up the best beard trimmers and stubble trimmers in Australia for men to achieve a perfectly polished look.

What to look for in a beard trimmer

Most men wouldn’t know, but there’s actually a lot to consider when buying a beard trimmer besides the price. You need to consider how versatile it can be, what lengths it can cut your beard or stubble to and, as with most other pieces of technology, how long the battery will last.

These are the four main factors that will guide you to the best beard trimmer for you:

Length of cut

Most beard trimmers should include adjustable length settings. The incremental levels of adjustment usually increase (become more precise) with the price and are more suited to the discerning bearded man who knows and wants an exact beard/stubble length every time.

Know your own beard (long, medium, short, stubble) and choose your trimmer accordingly. An expensive trimmer with 25 length settings is pointless if you’re just using the short 0.5mm stubble setting every time; a cheaper one can do the same job.

Some beard trimmers will make it easy to make length adjustments, while some others will come with various guards you need to switch out. If you travel regularly, the former option will no doubt be more beneficial.

Wired or wireless?

Most beard trimmers on the market come with the convenience of both a mains-powered and a wireless option. The vast majority will have a rechargeable battery built-in and a charging port, so you can easily use it at home and when travelling. You may occasionally find some beard trimmers will be wireless only, and these will need to have their batteries replaced.

A wireless beard trimmer, which comes with its own charging station provides the best of both worlds. It will however take up a bit more luggage space if you intend to go away for months at a time. If it’s just a week-long staycation you’re going on, you should be fine travelling without the charger, just be sure you know how long your beard trimmer’s battery will last.

Purpose

Some beard trimmers can be multi-purpose body trimmers and groomers, so make sure you know what you want to use it for, as the accompanying attachments could be for shaving heads or other regions other than the soft contours of the face. We don’t recommend you use one trimmer for your whole body. If you want to trim body hair, we suggest you invest in a dedicated body groomer.

Features

One of the most overlooked areas is their ease of cleaning. Some of the most advanced beard trimmers today have built-in vacuums which are designed to suck up the loose beard hair as it is being cut. This makes for the ultimate in trimmer cleaning, leaving close to zero mess and quick disposal.

Other features to look out for include, a pop-out head for easy cleaning, water resistant or waterproofing for quick cleaning and use in the shower if you wish, and add-ons for other facial hair like nose and ear hair detailing. Also, take note of what the blades are made of. Stainless steel blades are cheap but will become blunt far quicker than titanium coated blades. If you go stainless, it just means you’ll need to lubricate the blades more often to prevent a dull trim

Chris Hemsworth, Famously Muscly Man, Wears One Of Rolex’s Heaviest Watches

Chris Hemsworth might not be cultivating mass like he used to during his Marvel days, but instead, he’s cultivating a rather hefty watch collection…

The 39-year-old Hollywood superstar (and Australia’s biggest export – literally) was a TAG Heuer ambassador for years but has since parted ways with the popular Swiss watch brand. Since then, he’s been using his contractual freedom to pick up and wear a wide variety of watches.

We’ve seen him rock Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks, IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Chronographs, Bulgari Octo Finissimos, Apple Watches and even a Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage… Now, he’s added a Rolex to his collection.

Chris was spotted out and about in Byron Bay last Friday wearing a brand-new yellow gold Rolex Submariner Date (ref. 126618LN-0002): a rather eye-catching watch that would probably give most people wrist pain. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Images: Daily Mail / Rolex

First introduced in 2020, this luxurious take on Rolex’s iconic dive watch – arguably the most famous watch on the planet – might not be as suitable as a tool watch thanks to its 18ct yellow gold construction, but what it lacks in practicality, it more than makes up for with sheer baller status.

With a sticker price of AU$53,350, it’s almost four times as expensive as its equivalent in steel (ref. 126610LN-0001, which retails for AU$14,250). It also weighs nearly twice as much as its already fairly substantial steel sibling (296g vs. 158g). That’s ridiculously heavy for a watch, but that’s what you get when you go for an all-gold Sub.

Hemsworth is currently taking a break from filming Furiosa, a spin-off and a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The blockbuster film, which is being filmed in rural New South Wales, is shaping up to be the biggest film production in Australian history, with over AU$343.2 million spent on the film thus far.

Who is Charles Oliveira?

He has fought in the UFC for over 12 years, making his debut back in 2010. During that time, he has racked up the most finishes of any fighter in UFC history at 19.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, he particularly adept at making people tap out, amassing 16 submission victories in the promotion, a UFC record.

He first gained the UFC lightweight Championship back in 2019. Although he has never officially lost to anyone since then, he had the belt stripped in May 2022 at UFC 274 against Justin Gaethje for missing weight.

Early life

Charles Oliveira was on 17 October 1989 in Guaruja, São Paolo, Brazil. He grew in a poverty in the Brazilian capital’s favelas. Charles’ nickname – “do Bronx” – is in reference to his poor background, the name stemming from the impoverished Bronx area in New York City.

Oliveira was very sick as a child, having been diagnosed with rheumatic fever and a heart murmur, almost rendering him unable to walk. He also has very poor eyesight, which was only corrected six months ago. It’s a miracle he’s even been able to fight this long without his glasses!

Due to his poor background, he was introduced to the workforce early, helping his mother sell cheese salads from a trailer. It was here, aged 12, that he made friends with children who trained jiu-jitsu and was invited to train with them.

Originally, his family could not afford the tuition, but the instructor let Charles train on a scholarship status; and we’re very thankful that he did.

Oliveira began training with jiu-jitsu coach Roger Coehlo, and showed his potential early, winning his first major title as a white belt in 2003. He continued to win tournaments, winning 16 medals in major tournaments in 2006 alone.

He was awarded his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in 2010, aged only 21.

MMA career

He began training MMA around this time, making his professional debut in 2008. On multiple occasions he fought, and beat, multiple people on the same night.  Amassing a record of 12 wins and zero losses he was signed to the UFC in 2010.

Starting his MMA career so young – the average age of fighters in 2010 was around 28 – the early days of his career were a mixture of wins and losses.

Although starting his career in the lightweight division (155lbs), from 2012 to 2017 he fought in the featherweight division (145lbs). However, during this time period, he had trouble making the featherweight limit, missing weight four times.

His career really changed around when he came back up to lightweight. From 2 December 2017 until 22 October 2023 Oliveira was unbeaten, racking up a crazy 11-fight win streak in one of the most competitive divisions in the UFC.

UFC Lightweight Champion

In 2021, on the back of defeating former Interim Lightweight Champion and UFC fan-favourite Tony Ferguson, Oliveira was offered a UFC lightweight title shot against former Bellator Lightweight champion Michael Chandler at UFC 262.

The lightweight belt had been held by Russian smashing machine Khabib Nurmagomedov before he retired, vacating the belt.

Despite almost being knocked out by Chandler in the first round, Oliveira rallied in the second, knocking the American down and finishing the fight by technical knockout (TKO).

His next two fights, against Dustin Poirer and Justin Gaethje ended in a very similar fashion. Despite being knocked down in the first round, Charles found a way to win, submitting both fighters by rear-naked choke.

However, in the fight against Justin Gaethje, Charles once again missed weight, weighing 0.5lbs over the 155lb Lightweight Championship limit. Charles Oliveira was stripped of his belt, making him ineligible to win the title even if he won. Nicknamed “scale gate”, this proved to be controversial, as other fighters on the card also reported issues with the scales being off.

Charles Olivera’s hair

Charles Oliveira’s hair has not always been the platinum blond which has now become synonymous with the Brazilian fighter.

In fact, he only started dying in 2020, first starting to perform the trend in his fight against Kevin Lee.

Since then, both he and his coaching staff and team have died their hair for every single fight he has taken part in. The ritual may, or may not, have been inspired by the Romanian football team at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the trend Olivera said:

“It sounds crazy, but I only do it on fight week to travel, on fight week I do it. Then the fans start saying “You still didn’t dye your hair? Where’s the Saiyan? It’s not going to work out if you do not.”

Whether or not it gives Charles Olivera Goku-like super Saiyan powers on fight night, it still looks pretty cool.

Charles Olivera’s wife

Olivera has been married to fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Talita Roberta Pereira. She is also from Guaruja and the pair have been married since 2014. The couple still near the same neighbourhood they grew up in.

In a loving gesture, Oliveira never forgets to give his wife a shoutout in his post-fight interviews. They have a child together, Tayla, born in 2017.

Charles Olivera also has multiple tattoos across his body.

He has several horse tattoos on his arms, stemming from his love for the animal and for harness racing. Other animal tattoos Oliveira has inked on his body include a lion, elephant and gorilla.

As is the trend with some MMA fighters, Charles also has his surname “O-L-I-V-E-I-R-A” tattooed in big letters across his back. A tattoo of his daughter Tayla sits on his left pec.
