It’s a First World Problem when the only thing that motivates you to get out of bed is the thought of a steaming hot mug of caffeine, but it’s a reality with over 2.25 billion cups of coffee consumed around the world every day and plenty claiming that coffee actually has several health benefits.
But what about when we deprive ourselves of the brown stuff? We’ve all felt the nuances of caffeine withdrawal, but here’s what really happens when you quit coffee for good.
According to Lauren McGuckin, Accredited Practising Dietitian and Spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia “…Definitely some people get headaches, fatigue, drowsiness and find they are unable to concentrate or are moody and irritable.” But there’s even more to it than that.
Apparently, the more dependent you are on your caffeine hit, the worse your withdrawal symptoms are likely to be.

“If you are used to a highly daily dose of a stimulant, and are used to having greater amounts, then to go cold turkey and to suddenly no longer have that stimulant and that chemical reaction, it’s a massive kick in the head so to speak,” McGuckin told The Huffington Post.
This ‘massive kick in the head’ can come in many forms, but one example is caffeine’s ability to block our adenosine receptors (the thing that tells your body it’s time tor rest) which means your body isn’t getting the message to feel tired. These blocked adenosine receptors can also make your body produce more dopamine, elevating your mood and in turn, affecting your adrenaline levels.
The more coffee you consume on a daily basis, the more your receptors you grow. When you cut out caffeine altogether “Your brain is saying, ‘what the heck? I need to maintain this equilibrium and don’t have that additional help I was getting from the coffee’. So you system is out of whack, essentially”, says McGuckin.
So how much is too much coffee? Well, according to McGuckin 300-400 mg of caffeine a day – or 4-5 cups of instant coffee – is recommended. Seems like quite a lot, and whilst McGuckin also backs the health benefits of a couple of cups a day, she also says “It’s all about balance.”

For a stay that’s truly like no other, think outside the hotel chain and check into one of the most unusual hotels in Asia.
These strange stays range from an eco-lodge shaped like an elephant, to a repurposed oil rig, to a museum where you could snooze steps away from a Monet. Some are design-focused marvels, others look like they were dreamt up by the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen.
Whatever your style or destination, one thing is for certain: you’ll be talking about your stay long after you leave.
Hang Nga Guesthouse | Đà Lạt, Vietnam
Alternately known as Crazy House, Vietnam’s Hang Nga Guesthouse fully lives up to its nickname. Architect Dang Viet Nga was inspired by Antoni Gaudi to create something that looks straight from a fairytale. The 10 themed guest rooms are filled with interesting details, from ladders shaped like roots to wooden animals to spiderweb-patterned windows.
The Imperial Boathouse Hotel | Ko Samui, Thailand
It’s not surprising to see a hotel with a nautical theme on a tropical island, but this one takes it to the next level. The Imperial Boathouse Hotel is made up of authentic rice barges that once cruised the Chao Praya River. Today they have been renovated into luxury suites that come complete with a bedroom, living room, sky-lit bathroom, and deck. Even the pool is shaped like a boat.
Seaventures Dive Rig | Sabah, Malaysia
For scuba divers, there’s no better access to Sipadan’s famously rich marine ecosystem than Seaventures Dive Rig. The converted oil rig has 27 fully-furnished rooms and offers entertainments like a movie room and a karaoke bar, but the real draw is the diving. A lift lowers divers directly into the reef below and all dives are included in the cost of your stay.
4 Rivers Floating Lodge | Koh Kong, Cambodia
The 4 Rivers Floating Lodge in Cambodia’s Koh Kong is the kind of place that guarantees you a killer Instagram pic. Each of its 12 tented bungalows is perched directly over Tatai River and provides spectacular views from a private sun deck. Modern amenities like wi-fi, flatscreens, and mini-bars ensure civilsation never feels too far away.
Wanderlust, Singapore
Intended for the adventurous traveller yearning for off-the-beaten-track accommodation, the Wanderlust Hotel in Singapore offers eye-popping design and friendly service. Four of the country’s top design agencies were given free rein to create rooms that are modern, funky, experimental, cutting-edge, and one-of-a-kind. It’s essentially a playground for grownups.
Benesse House | Naoshima Island, Japan
Thirsting for culture? Book a stay at museum-meets-hotel Benesse House in Japan. Split between several wings, Benesse House was built by Soichiro Fukutake, an art collector and billionaire heir to a publishing fortune. Fukutake’s spectacular private collection – including works by Twombly, Johns, Gormley, and Monet – fills the space and can even be found in guest rooms.
Kumbuk Hotel | Buttala, Sri Lanka
On the banks of the Kumbukkan Oya River in Sri Lanka stands an elephant that bears a resemblance to a papier-mâché project gone wrong. This odd beast is the Kumbuk Hotel, an eco-friendly experiment constructed from wood and straw. The possible downside? The website promises “two toilets in an interactive setting with nature.” Hmm…
Container Hotel | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
If good things come in small packages, a stay at Malaysia’s Container Hotel is bound to be excellent. The Kuala Lumpur hotel is built from renewable freight containers that have been innovatively redesigned with colorful and imaginative features. Travellers looking for a unique but affordable experience will find it here.
Sharma Springs | Bali, Indonesia
Set along the terraced slopes of the Ayung River in Bali, Green Village is a master-planned community of 18 dramatic, custom-designed homes. The most magnificent is Sharma Springs, an awe-inspiring eco-resort made entirely of black and white bamboo. The six-storey structure includes four bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge and dining area, a media room, a kids’ play room, and an outside barbecue area.

The end of an era has arrived for one of Rolls-Royce‘s most enduring models but that doesn’t mean the luxury car maker will let it slip into oblivion without a proper send off.
The Phantom Zenith collection is Rolls-Royce’s swan song to the Phantom Coupe. Only 50 examples of the custom appointed cars have been built and every single vehicle has already been spoken for.

Bespoke details on the Zenith Phantom Coupes include laser etching on the arm rests of significant global locations where the car made its debut, a revamped version of the brand’s Starlight Headliner which fades into the rear of the cabin and a glass shelf in the boot which folds out as bar to serve champagne.
One special memorabilia included in the Zenith cars is an alluminium case finished in Best English Blacking which holds a component from the Phantom assembly line direct from the Rolls-Royce factory in Goodwood.
Going out in style never looked so elegant.

Just when you thought Netflix was the only place to go to catch up with all your favourite series, the clever bastards over at YouTube have swooped in with YouTube Red, which has just launched in Australia.
The new ad-free video and music subscription service is taking on major competitors like Netflix, Spotify and Apple Music and is now available in Oz, the first region out of the US to receive the product.
A subscription to YouTube Red will set you back $11.99 a month, with an introductory offer of $9.99 and the first month free if you sign up before June 6.
Mimicking Netflix’s ‘Original Series’, YouTube Red has 10 shows of original content, but it’s all from YouTube ‘stars’ like Lilly Singh, Rooster Teeth and PewDiePie, so if you’re not keen on makeup tutorials and heavily edited humour, then this might not be the best option for you.
YouTube Red also gives subscribers the ability to keep videos playing in the background on their mobile devices while they multi-task (switching apps or interacting with notifications currently pauses YouTube videos), and also save any YouTube video to a device for playback when they have no mobile internet reception or want to save their data allowance.
Perhaps YouTube isn’t only good for cat videos after all.

As far as exclusivity and highly sought after cars go, nothing in the world quite compares to the calibre of product procured by RM Auctions and Bonhams in Monaco.
Held annually in the lead up to the legendary grand prix of Monaco, a parade around the circuit usually marks the beginning of the sale of classic and modern race cars with eye watering price tags to boot. This year’s lot is no different featuring no less than four cars which commanded over US$2,000,000. That’s a lot of precious metal.
#1 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix Two-Seater
$1.2 million is was the asking price for this true classic which hails from a bygone era in motoring excellence. It was owned by Bugatti enthusiast Jack Perkins who looked after it for most of its life. The car itself is powered by a turbo-charged straight-eight cylinder which helped it get around one of the first Indy 500 circuits. Since then it has has received all new original components sourced form Bugatti whilst claiming records at Bugatti Owners’ Club hill climbs.
#2 1991-1992 Benetton-Ford B191/191B Formula One
Equalling the Bugatti price tag is an actual race car in the form of the Benneton-Ford Formula One car from the early 90s. $1.2 million is what you’ll need to cough up to get your hands on this naturally aspirated V8 beauty which comes with a winning heritage list to boot. Michael Schumacher won his first ever podium in this chassis whilst Nelson Piquet drove his last race in this car and Martin Brundle took this as his first ride upon joining Benetton.
#3 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Cabriolet
A beautiful classic from the 1950s era of motoring is this Ferrari with unique coachwork design cues and a make of only four models amongst the cabriolets bodied by Vignale. It is powered by a Colombo-designed 2.5-litre V12 engine which makes 170hp. The price you’ll need to pay is $1.33 million.
#4 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing
The early car that brought the revival of the Mercedes SLS today remains a true classic with its unique gull wing doors. The two-seater featured a 3.0-litre inline six that produced 222hp. At the Monaco auctions it fetched a cool $1.4 million.
#5 1948 Tucker 48
An all-American classic featuring gorgeous lines is the 1948 Tucker hailing all the way from Chicago’s vintage era. Built by Preston Tucker, the car only made it to 51 examples before the company shut its doors. It sold at Monaco for $1.47 million.
#6 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS
The car that has been faithfully restored and brought to its former glory is also one of the finest driver’s car from the Italian marque. It carries the esteemed Pininfarina design language in convertible guise and packs a decent punch with its 260hp, 3.3-litre V12 engine. It went for $2.03 million at the auctions.
#7 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO Coupe
As a modern Ferrari, the 1985 GTO Coupe made huge waves during its debut. It was featured in Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop 2 opening sequence and has remained a much sought after silhouette since. Wearing a contemporary wedge shape and mandatory pop-up headlights of the 80s, the mid-engined twin turbo V8 sold for $2.06 million at Monaco.
#8 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution
A true endurance race car cannot be driven on public roads. That is unless some genius manages to take a fully fledged race car and tweaks it to meet street-legal specifications. The car itself has claimed 13 wins from 31 race starts including three from the Canadian GT championship and a stint in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. This is the ultra wide GT1 Evolution from Porsche with a 3.2-litre twin-turbo flat six and over 600hp. It went for an princely $3.14 million. Number plates and ear plugs not included.
#9 1953 Jaguar XK120C ‘C-Type’ Two-seat Roadster
Considered one of the most beautiful race cars in the world, the Jaguar XK120C is a two-seater that exudes as much charisma as it does elegance. This particular example has competed in both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Spa 24 Hours during 1953. It has remained in a single family ownership since 1963. The 3.4-litre straight six made for an unprecedented road presence, helping to drive the roadster’s sale price to an astonishing $8.22 million today. And yes, someone at Monaco bought it.
#10 1951 Ferrari 340 America Barchetta
The cream of the crop was this classic competition Ferrari from 1951, also known as one of the prancing horse’s most beautiful cars. A 4.1-litre V12 engine produced 217hp and helped get it to Le Mans in 1951 and 1952. Fully restored by its previous Italian owner, the elegant racing lines contoured perfectly around its topless design and vintage appointments. It sold for a cool $8.24 million.

Those howling about the exorbitant rent prices in New York need to take a step back to see what the term expensive really means in the Big Apple’s property market.
Located in the affluent Upper East Side (shout out to Serena van der Woodsen fans) is a lavish townhouse once owned by the late Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace himself. The home exudes class and pure elegance in every corner and for that you will need to pay a hefty price. US$120,000 a month starting from mid-August in fact.

What you get for that figure though is an unrivalled neo-classical limestone mansion built in 1950 which offers 1,300 square metres of living space, 17 rooms over 6 floors and an elevator and grand staircase which links the space together. On the ground floor you’ll be greeted with a chef’s kitchen alongside a dining and breakfast room which spills out into a private outdoor garden. Taking a page out of luxury hotels, there’s even a marble foyer which leads into an expansive gallery before reaching a reception room.
Other highlights include a large study room, a gallery, a formal living room and a library. Meanwhile inside the master suite you’ll find a wet bar, a bathroom with a Jacuzzi and marble bath. Remaining highlights of the home includes high ceilings propped up with Corinthian pillars.
Versace purchased the home back in 1995 for a cool $7.5 million but today the public records indicate that the home is worth over $36 million.

Recently made the big, bold decision to remain friends with your ex? Congratulations, you’re the bigger person, or are you? A recent study has found that those with ‘darker personality traits’ are more likely to stay in touch with former flames for ‘strategic’ advancement. The study, by researchers at Oakland University, involved polling more than 861 subjects who had been through a breakup, probing them on their current relationship status with an ex and thus revealing narcissistic and psychopathic qualities. What’s all this about ‘strategic’ advancement, though? Well, apparently, if you are in touch with the guy or girl who ripped out your heart, it could be for information, “practicality and the chance of hooking up”.Those involved in the study claimed to stay in touch with an ex because of a strong bond they share, as well as a continued sense of trust, but researchers Justin Mogilski and Dr Lisa Welling are calling bullshit. “Although a breakup nominally marks the end of a romantic relationship, the current research suggests that resource exchange between ex-partners can extend beyond relationship dissolution.”In other words, your motivation for sending your ex that odd drunken text could be far deeper than you thought at 3am. “Across two studies, we identified reasons for remaining friends after a breakup and outlined how the importance of these reasons varies with sex and personality,” they observed. “This research builds upon literature examining CSFs and suggests that (post-relationship friendships) are functionally similar insofar as they permit continued exchange of desirable resources.”So there you have it, maybe keeping in contact isn’t so innocent after all.RELATED: 10 Signs You Need To Breakup With Her
