While Coleridge’s Rime Of The Ancient Mariner was not specifically directed at the cruise ship connoisseurs of 2019, a recent rebellion of passengers aboard the luxurious Norwegian Spirit (which recently underwent – what customers are calling – a similar nightmare life-in-death experience) proves this cautionary tale is still worth its weight in daiquiris.
As The BBC reports, “Passengers have told of angry scenes after their luxury cruise ship missed key stops and was left ‘floating around’ at sea for days during a tour of northern Europe.”
While they may not have arrogantly shot an Albatross to incur the Northern Atlantic’s wrath, they were certainly quite insolent in response to their trip being disrupted by Hurricane Lorenzo.
As News.com.au reports, “Hundreds of passengers have staged a demonstration on-board a cruise liner, with one saying ‘all hell broke loose’ on the luxurious ship.”
It was supposed to be a two-week dream cruise for thousands of passengers on-board the luxurious Norwegian Spirit. But the voyage turned into an arduous journey, with many passengers demanding their money back.
There are passengers from all over the world on this ship. Set to dock in SouthHampton Friday the 11th. Media should interview trapped passengers as they escape this nightmare. pic.twitter.com/v651i6MUPM

Setting sail on September the 27th, the lavish cruise liner left Southampton, England for a dazzling adventure, bouncing ‘tween France, Amsterdam, Norway and Iceland.
But instead, “all hell [reportedly] broke loose” within moments of boarding the vessel, with management changing the itinerary before the cruise departed the first port.
“The first port was supposed to be Amsterdam,” a passenger told Cruise Radio. “But they cancelled it before we boarded and switched it to Le Havre.”
Passengers then got even angrier when high winds on their sailing route prevented the ship from docking at other ports, including the new destination of Le Havre.
“It really was bad,” a passenger told Cruise Radio.
“Then, after stops in Bergen and Flam, they announced they were not going to make it to (our next port of call in) Iceland because they felt they might catch Hurricane Lorenzo on the way back to Ireland.”
According to some passengers, “the ship eventually docked at a ‘deserted’ Norwegian town that was closed to tourists before moving on to Greenock near Glasgow because Iceland was also stripped from the itinerary,” (News.com.au).
“But again, the ship was denied access and moved on from Greenock to Belfast, resulting in three days at sea for the angry passengers.”
Passengers then took to Twitter to vent, claiming toilets stopped flushing and everyone was given three-day-old food to eat on-board.
Supposed to have 4 days at sea and instead there were 6 – the ship didn’t go to Iceland or Amsterdam. Where else can you pay full price and get 40%? #NCLHELL
— NCLHELL (@NCLHELL1) October 9, 2019
They also posted such sardonic jams as: “Where else can you pay full price and get 40%,” which – to be fair – is a good point.
We’re also loathe to criticise people banding together and standing up for themselves. However, in this case, the angst appears misguided, as the cruise company appears to have had safety in mind when making the changes.
Totally ruined Holiday by NCL
— NCLHELL (@NCLHELL1) October 9, 2019
Not to mention: the whole point of going on a cruise is to loll in luxury without doing anything cultural (otherwise you would have strapped on a backpack and headed for Rome). And – even if you are stuck at sea – you can still do pretty much whatever you had in mind for your trip, including making use of the cruise ship’s bars and lounges, spa, aqua parks, casino, gym, shops and deck.
Other Twitter users were quick to point this out, picking up on the hypocrisy of the rioting passengers.
Sue the weather. The videos of these moaning entitled Americans makes me nauseous and embarrassed.
— Peter Giles (@kidlightnin71) October 9, 2019
That said, it’s understandable customers are doing their best to nab a refund, with reports indicating passengers paid up to $10,000 for the two-week cruise and, instead of refunds, were offered a 25 per cent voucher towards a future cruise.
The videos posted to Twitter, however, which show passengers chanting “shame on you”, “we want refunds” and “get us off this ship” does seem quite dramatic.
As for the cruise company: a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said the ship was forced to cancel the docking at Greenock due to weather conditions “as well as a delay caused by a departing navy vessel that experienced a technical malfunction.”
Instead, the near-mutiny meant the ship docked in Belfast, with many returning to London on their own rather than boarding again.
Petulant, or understandable? You be the judge.

We all know getting drunk before a big sporting event is a bad idea (unless you’re the Brisbane Broncos). The morning after a big night is made for curling up beside the TV and ordering uber eats, not working out, that comes later. However new research shows a big night out might affect you for longer than you think.New research by WHOOP has found that the effects of alcohol lasted for a massive four days in athletes. The research tracked sleep patterns and exercise to monitor the effect that a debaucherous night out would have on athletic performance. Now, most studies only look at the effects on performance within 24 hours of alcohol consumption but due to the nature of the WHOOP tracker athletes were able to track for up to five days following a drinking sesh. The effects of alcohol were measured in two ways, the first through recovery metrics and the second was a subjective assessment from the athletes themselves. To be honest the subjective assessment just seems like athletes being way to tough on themselves as they continued to mark themselves down for days. So let’s let the data do the talking.
View this post on Instagram
The metrics taken were resting heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) relative to the athlete’s average. For those who don’t know, heart rate variability is the statistical measurement of heart rate irregularity. So basically it’s the time in-between heartbeats, after all a resting heart rate of 60bpm does not mean a heartbeat once a second. Now back to the findings, as expected 1-day post alcohol saw the most significant drop in metrics, with 74% recording reduced recovery metrics. Two days following the event 29% of athletes a drop and it kept going with 7% still recording a drop in recovery four and five days post-consumption.Even the night of drinking can age you by 12 years, with WHOOP recording resting heart rates in athletes that were 16.2% higher than average and HRV’s that were 22.7% lower. According to the fitness tracker that is a change of magnitude similar to aging 12 years.

Imagine if you have a drink every Saturday night, your performance won’t be back to where it was until Thursday, so you’ll get two days of good training in before you do it all again. Not really helpful when you’re trying to perfect your rig is it?Is there any way to prevent this? Well obviously stop drinking alcohol is the main one but it’s also the hardest and most unlikely. Other helpful tips include drinking water regularly while on a drinking sesh, still getting a good night’s sleep, eating before drinking and even avoiding certain drinks like bourbon and tequila that are high in congeners.Or you can work hard, play harder and just know that you’re going to have to put the effort to get your body where it needs to be.

Picture a hitman’s uniform. You’re probably picturing a well-dressed man in an all-black suit with very little skin showing possibly due to leather gloves over the hands. Well, it wasn’t a costume party, but Adrien Brody did decide to dress the part at his latest red carpet appearance.Adrien Brody was in Paris this week at the Montblanc store on Avenue des Champs-Élysées for the launch party of the manufacturers latest RED collection. RED is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in fighting HIV/AIDS through prevention services, treatment, counselling and care facilities. Through its collaboration with RED Montblanc donates a percentage of every sale in the collection to the charity. It is a great cause – but not great enough for Adrien’s red carpet accessory to go unnoticed.Leather driving gloves are for two types of people: drivers like Jason Statham in Transporter, and hitmen. So naturally, they fit right into the red carpet. It’s certainly a choice by the actor and we’re not sure it was the right one. His hands did get one thing right though; his choice in watch. It wouldn’t be a Montblanc party without a limited edition watch-piece and for this Adrien opted for the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere, which features a robust bronze case with a touch of lightness in the titanium case. Adrien is no stranger to nice watches and has even expressed a design to create his own. Maybe he will take design elements from the Geosphere watch face, which boasts the world’s seven summits as marked on two globes. But hey: anything would be better than taking inspiration from hitmen. The outfit was rounded off with a dark blue suit with a black shirt. Adrien chose to mix a few darker colours together as the dark blue suit was paired with a matching tie but on a black shirt. The blue and black combination is one that we would usually recommend on a lighter blue suit but something about this combination works. The reason it works is because it is a bit relaxed and not so styled. The tie isn’t done up properly and the black shirts right collar keeps popping out over the suit. It’s very minimal but does give off a casual vibe. Despite us questioning the gloves, the outfit wasn’t even close to the craziest one on the night.
That distinction goes to actor Billy Porter who wore a fringed suit, sequin-embellished beret, a scarf and white boots. The whole event was a star-studded affair with Georgia May Jagger and Lottie Moss also in attendance. To give the night some extra colour the store had been stripped of its usual merchandise and covered in red with white graffiti with only a few displays of the latest collection. The charity event is in line with the Oscar-winners recent work, with Adrien most recently walking the UNICEF red carpet for their summer gala. It has been a while since he has been on our screens though but that is set to change with the actor having three films in post-production that should be released sometime next year.Let’s hope he takes the gloves off.

When you think of Paris, you probably think of romantic candlelit dinners or the copious amounts of good wine available for a couple dollars at the supermarket. What you probably don’t think of is the theft, despite Parisian thieves having a pretty ballsy reputation. Who can forget the brazen theft of Kim Kardashian three years ago? Now though a fresh warning has been issued to tourists to the capital following one of the costliest thefts of its kind in recent history.
A Japanese business had his US$840,000 Richard Mille Tourbillon Diamond Twister taken straight off his wrist outside of the 5-star Hotel Napoleon, situated in the heart of the Paris shopping district. The theft near the Champs-Elysées took place at 9:30 pm while the businessman was having a smoke outside and was approached by an individual who asked for a cigarette. The ruse worked as the thief was able to see the watch and snatch it straight off his wrist. The Richard Mille watch is considered a piece of high-end jewellery featuring a diamond-embedded spiral that emanates from the escapement. The watch is considered a women’s watch which explains the equal focus on jewellery and high-tech watchmaking. The watch is technically small by Richard Mille standards but like any of their watches is more masculine and noticeable given it’s connected to automobile racing. Only 30 pieces were made in total, so you can understand the value and gravity behind this theft.

Theft in the capital is rising according to police, in the first eight months of this year alone 71 watch thefts have been reported stolen costing roughly US$2.44 million. This represents a 28% rise in luxury watch thefts when compared to last year and the police are blaming the internet for the rise. That pesky internet to blame once again for our problems.According to French police, petty thieves are going online to find ways to swipe watches, with other popular methods including bumping into car mirrors so a driver leans out to fix it while someone jumps him and approaching drunk people outside of nightclubs on Champs-Elysées. Unfortunately for you if you wear a recognisable watch like a Rolex or Cartier you are more likely to be targeted as thieves tend to go for brands they can recognise. These watches are also more likely to be able to be sold on the black market without papers making it a pretty sweet payday. The takeaway here is to stop showing off your watch in public and keep it covered, which does defeat the purpose of having a nice watch. But it’s better than a stolen one.

You wouldn’t think a salty, tomato-heavy napolitano could make you more fertile. Yet here we are. And no: we’re not talking about super-nitrogen san marzanos or the latest GMO rarity (though if you want to put your spermly-hopes in that basket; be our guinea pig).
No: today we’re talking about a study conducted by the University of Sheffield that has shown a compound found in tomatoes could help tackle fertility problems in men. Namely: lycopene, a pigment (and dietary supplement) that gives tomatoes their red colour.
This pigment has been found to boost overall sperm quality with improvements to the size, shape and swimming capabilities of your little… swimmers.
Researchers say their findings could reduce the need for invasive fertility treatments in the future as more than 40% of all infertility cases are due to abnormal sperm production or function.
So don’t skimp on the tomatoes next time you’re preparing a token salad to go with your steak. Or, better yet: try some tomato-rich Mediterranean recipes (think: salmorejo, tomate aliñado or – for the heathens – pasta Napolitano from a jar). And of course, there’s always pizza.
View this post on Instagram
But the story doesn’t end there: as reported by 7 News.com.au, “Experts point out that the study, which only involved healthy participants, does not show that lycopene improves fertility and needs to be replicated with men with poor sperm quality.”
In other words: consuming lycopene has only (so far) been shown to boost the sperm of those that are already healthy.
As for how they did it: the team from the University of Sheffield recruited 60 fighting fit volunteers aged between 19 and 30, and instructed them to take two LactoLycopene tablets (the equivalent of five cans of cooked tomatoes) per day. Only half were given the real pills, however, and the other half (unknowingly) received a placebo.
After 12 weeks of this double-blind randomised trial, the researchers found that those taking LactoLycopene had almost 40% faster-swimming sperm, as well as improvements to sperm size and shape.
Professor Allan Pacey, head of the University of Sheffield’s department of oncology and metabolism and lead author, said: “We didn’t really expect that at the end of the study there would be any difference in the sperm from men who took the tablet versus those who took the placebo.”
“When we decoded the results, I nearly fell off my chair… The improvement… was dramatic.
Meanwhile, study co-author Dr Liz Williams, a specialist in human nutrition, said that while she too was “surprised” by the improvements in the sperm quality, “Further research is needed with a larger study sample” (7 News.com.au) to add weight to the results.

Curvaceous buttocks. Careful desire. Ragnar Lodbrok’s penetrating gaze. If you believe the stereotypes it would appear the only man equipped to really please a woman in the bedroom is one with a body and emotional intelligence few possess. But the truth has less to do with magical hip thrusts and more to do with paying attention. Still listening? Allow us to introduce ‘Lorenzo’ – a former active male escort and CEO of A Gentleman Caller, an Australian escort agency. We sought out Lorenzo in a purely professional capacity, to ask him the very much hypothetical question: what is the secret to pleasing anyone in the bedroom.Unfortunately for anyone looking for a quick fix, the first hint Lorenzo gave us was time: “Any escort will tell you the first few encounters are extremely nerve-wrecking and quite daunting… For me, it was a gradual build of experience, which gave me a great deal of confidence to relax and enjoy my clients’ company.”He then went on to say: “While stamina in the bedroom is obviously a key element, it is not the be all and end all… Yes, maintaining a fit, toned and terrific body will attract an array of [women], but it will only mask your characteristics momentarily before the booking gets underway.”What’s the secret then? “[Being] a well dressed, groomed and courteous gentleman will take you further in the long run.”“Life experience [whatever your age] also plays a big part” in your bedroom success, Lorenzo added, saying that during the gigolo “recruiting” process, the main focus is to ensure that the gentleman’s agenda isn’t purely based on getting physical pleasure, but rather seeking a job where he will connect on an emotional level with each client.
“90% of the male escort industry is about companionship; accommodating to a woman’s needs both physically and mentally.”
Crucially, “Most ladies rely on intellectual stimulation just as much as physical stimulation. It might sound a little cliche, but most ladies including the majority of my experiences just want someone to talk to with a touch of TLC.”“Personality is key. While your ‘equipment’ and prowess in the bedroom are obvious elements to success, your attitude needs to be on point. Why? Generally speaking, most people “have zero tolerance for brash and arrogant individuals.”
