‘Old Farts’ Threatening The Future Of America’s Cup Yacht Race
‘Old Farts’ Threatening The Future Of America’s Cup Yacht Race

The America’s Cup yacht race is the longest-running – and one of the most prestigious – sporting events in the world, attracting a global audience with seriously deep pockets, all of whom will be keeping their eyes locked on the upcoming 2021 match, due to take place in March 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand.

For this match, the 36th edition, will feature brand new yachts, the likes of which are incredibly technologically advanced and equally expensive. However, to some sailing traditionalists (read: ‘old farts’), they’ve veered too far away from what it means to be a sailing boat all in the name of generating larger sums of income.

At least, that’s according to the NZ Heraldwhich recently published a story claiming “leaders in the sailing world” want future editions of the America’s Cup to consign the futuristic hydrofoil-based yachts to the bin and “return to a more traditional form.”

The current generation of foiling boats are, sure enough, a spectacle, not just for fans of the esteemed racing series, but for those with merely the slightest interest in sailing or sporting competition. However, according to NZ Herald, Chris Culver, commodore (chairman) of New York Yacht Club told Sailing World that if American Magic – the NYYC’s competing team for 2021 – “win’s this year’s Cup they would ‘put the boat back into the water'”.

The winning team of the America’s Cup gets to decide the design of the boats to be used in the next series (which takes place every four years). Emirates Team New Zealand is the Defender going into the 2021 America’s Cup race, and upon their victory at the 2017 race in Bermuda, decided to introduce the brand new foil boat design, the AC75. The team is also able to stipulate specific rules, and in this instance, has set the minimum number of sails required, minimum hull volume and number of foils.

The three competing teams are allowed to play around with areas including the hull shape and foil flaps. What is so cool about these boats, however, is that the foils on either side of the main hull allow the boat to be lifted out of the water and to essentially fly across it, in as little wind as possible.

It’s features such as this that sailing purists believe to be deviating too far from the tradition of the sport.

The NZ Herald also cites Riccardo Bonadeo, a famed Italian sailor, as agreeing that these technological advancements are a little too much.

“There must be technological evolution, but on boats that sail”, he told La Stampa“I share the New York Yacht Club’s idea of new 80-100 displacement hulls for the next edition.”

“With the AC75 we have entered another dimension, where aerodynamics are more important than hydrodynamics. In fact, we speak of flight, not navigation. And the seafaring skills of the crew are no longer enhanced, but other characteristics are required of the latter.”

“In short, I don’t see the art of sailing. Which for me means taking advtange of the wind according to its variations and the sails I have available.”

While the future of the actual America’s Cup race is in no doubt, the boats used to compete in it are. Ultimately, only the winner can decide. In order to challenge for the America’s Cup, the three competing teams must race in the Prada Cup first, to determine who goes through to race against Emirates Team New Zealand.

The three challengers this year are the Challenger of Record, Circolo della Vela Sicilia with their team Luna Rossa Challange, led by Max Sirena. Ineos Team UK, led by Olympic Gold Medalist Sir Ben Ainslie and representing the Royal Yacht Squadron, and American Magic, led by Terry Hutchinson and representing the New York Yacht Club.

Italian Study Confirms Every ‘Basic’ Coffee Drinker’s Worst Nightmare
Italian Study Confirms Every ‘Basic’ Coffee Drinker’s Worst Nightmare

Your coffee order says a lot about you – and not just what tickles your tastebuds. Much like Google can feed you pink sneakers or dodgy cargo pant ads accordingly, any barista worth their latte art should be able to hear your order and make a complex anthropological assessment about you in the time it takes the steam wand to froth your milk. We’ve spoken to them and rest assured; they’re doing it. There are of course exceptions. But they’re no fun to talk about. What is fun, however, is studies that tell you to drink more coffee.Enter: a recent study conducted by Italian scientists, in which it was observed drinking espresso makes you less likely to die.In the study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers found a link between drinking “Italian-style coffee” (a short black) and “lower risks of all-cause and, specifically, of [cardiovascular disease] mortality.”It’s still the case if you drink too much coffee you risk heart palpitations etc. But provided you are a healthy adult and you stay in the acceptable range, the study may hold relevance to you.Over an eight-year period researchers followed 20,487 individuals with no cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cancer to begin with. Each of the participants drank at least 30ml of espresso each day.RELATED: The Humiliating Coffee Mistake Every Australian Makes In ItalyParticipants’ dietary information was also considered in the study. Taking this into consideration, the scientists found that compared to those who didn’t drink coffee, three to four espresso shots of “Italian style coffee” was associated with lower risks of all-cause and, specifically, of CVD mortality. Per Yahoo, the scientists “believe this is thanks to a specific compound called NTproBNP.”RELATED: The Embarrassing Coffee Mistake Every Tourist Makes In ParisSo sorry latte, flat-white and cappuccino drinkers. Your worst nightmare has just come true: those pretentious espresso drinkers who keep calling you ‘basic’ were right. Not necessarily for the reason they thought (the ‘basic’ accusations tend to be more to do with coffee culture, not health). But still. Ouch.Put that in your cup and drink it.

Qantas Resumes Selling Flights To Beleaguered International Destination
Qantas Resumes Selling Flights To Beleaguered International Destination

The US had its fair share of controversies last year. From New Yorkers sipping prosecco as protests raged in the street behind them to Porsche 911s going up in flames in LA (not to mention a regression to ‘pirate age‘ diets), things are ~polarised~.Chuck in the fact that Corona 19 rather dramatically spiked in the US over the course of 2020 and… the United States of America aren’t as tourism-friendly as they’ve ever been. That tantalising prelude in mind… Qantas has just started selling flights again to the US from Australia. This comes as Qantas has “reopened ticket sales across its international network” (also including the UK) Traveller reports, “in a sign the airline is optimistic COVID-19 vaccines will be rolled out widely enough over the next six months to restart overseas travel.”The Flying Roo had previously not permitted passengers to book flights to London or the US until October. This has now changed. As early as January the 2nd customers began noticing flights are now scheduled to these destinations from July the 1st this year.“While waiting for the kettle to boil this morning was dreaming of travelling overseas and searched flights to the USA on the Qantas app,” one user wrote in the blog section of Executive Traveller.

“July flights are back on to the USA – around same price before they cancelled everything around 2 months ago.”

It’s not all good news for those with itchy feet, however. First: there’s no guarantee these flights will go ahead (nor is there that Australia’s international travel ban will be lifted).Additionally, flights to Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan that were set to start up again in March have now been pushed back to July 1, as the potential to create COVID-safe “travel bubbles” with those countries has gone ‘poof.’New Zealand is the only country Qantas is currently flying to, as part of Australia and New Zealand’s “one way bubble” agreement. As previously reported, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has said a vaccine would be required for quarantine free travel to resume to countries like the US and the UK, where coronavirus is rampant. He also said proof of having received the vaccine would be a condition of travel for Qantas passengers looking to board these flights. On the bright side, as one frequent flyer enthusiast speculated on the aforementioned blog, depending on the prices of Australia-US flights when travel returns to normal, you could see your booking as an investment (or cross your fingers it might become one).“Most likely scenario is your cash becomes part of the cash flow until the week they cancel your flight plus whatever optimistic minimum processing time to refund your money,” (the user starts off bleak).“Alternatively, you view it as an almost surefire way of getting doubt status credit or 10-20% increase in value of your cash over 1-2 years given the very high probability the flight will be cancelled plus the ‘unprecedented’ ultra low interest rates as seen by this country for a very long time, almost better than putting money in a term deposit.”Interesting theory.

Mischievous Dolce & Gabbana Instagram Post Polarises Fans
Mischievous Dolce & Gabbana Instagram Post Polarises Fans

Only established in 1985, Dolce & Gabbana is a relative newcomer in the world of luxury brands. Despite this, the Milanese luxury fashion house has had an enormous impact on the industry and is firmly a part of the luxury pantheon alongside other, much older Italian brands like Bulgari, Fendi and Gucci (just to name a few). Its 36 years of existence haven’t all been plain sailing, however. D&G owned the first decade of the 21st century, described by The New Yorker as “[being] to the two-thousands what Prada was to the nineteen-nineties and Armani was to the nineteen-eighties – gli stilisti whose sensibility defines the decade.”D&G have yet to again reach those lofty heights. Indeed, a number of scandals in recent years have threatened to sink the brand entirely. A number of controversy-generating advertising campaigns – most notably a 2018 promotional video that was perceived to be mocking Asians – have soured the brand’s image. But the brand has tried to shake off that insensitive reputation… Opening up another can of worms in the process.Near the end of 2020, D&G shared a short beauty campaign on their Instagram account, which showed a diverse array of men wearing and presenting makeup, such as lipstick and eyeshadow palettes. The luxurious images were lauded by many, but also attracted fierce criticism of a whole other kind.

D&G’s models showing off lipstick, eyeshadow and nail polish, as well as accessories from the brand.
A deluge of outraged commenters sounded off across the six Instagram accounts. One Russian commenter was particularly unhappy: “Painted men? What is fashion.”Not all reactions were negative, however. One commenter wrote:

“The fact you chose a man for this advert is a sign of the wonderful times we live in and how beautiful this gentleman looks is testament to the fact that gender should not be stereotyped.”

Another Italian commenter put it more bluntly, relating that “the comments of all the homophobes under this post are like a circus.”It shows how there’s a degree of ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ when it comes to luxury brands attempting to be more progressive. On the one hand, if you don’t make efforts to be more diverse, you’ll be criticised for being conservative, privileged or lacking innovation. On the other hand, try and be more progressive and there will always be people who’ll accuse you of tokenism – or worse, your customers will prove to be more conservative than your brand and reject your efforts.

Sure, criticism comes with the territory in this hyper-competitive, high profit-margin industry, and it’s unlikely that this social media buzz will result in any significant impact to D&G’s bottom line. Hell, celebrities kept wearing D&G after their 2018 misstep, much to the chagrin of some, as this Flare article reveals.Still, credit where credit’s due. This new campaign proves that D&G are moving in the right direction, rather than letting their past hurdles trip them up. It also has to be said that it’s quite a classy campaign. The men aren’t aggressively made up: it’s subtle; well-executed; the kind of thing that real men and women might actually wear.Indeed, this sort of ‘divisive’ campaign might just be what D&G needs – a “let them talk” marketing strategy, as one commenter pointed out.2020 was a tough year for retail, fashion and luxury, with most luxury brands taking a big hit to their bottom line thanks to COVID-19. Unlike many other luxury houses, D&G is independent – which has arguably helped them weather the storm better than the big luxury conglomerates. Time will tell if 2021 will see the industry return to an even keel.

Travis Scott Flaunts Rare ‘X-Rated’ $1 Million Richard Mille Watch
Travis Scott Flaunts Rare ‘X-Rated’ $1 Million Richard Mille Watch

While last year was grim for some, it wasn’t for Travis Scott.

2020 saw the Texan rapper release a slew of chart-topping singles as well as co-produce the soundtrack for Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending film Tenet. He also saw success beyond music, penning collaborations with sportswear giant Nike, fast-food chain McDonalds and massive multiplayer video game Fortnite. He even teamed up with Swedish luxury fragrance house Byredo on a ‘spacey’ signature fragrance.

It’s easy to let that sort of critical and commercial success go to your head… Or other parts of your body. And that’s exactly what Scott (real name Jacques Berman Webster II) has done: dropping an insane amount of money on a watch that you probably wouldn’t want to wear in polite company.

The 28-year-old Houston native took to Instagram to show off his latest horological indulgence: a Richard Mille RM 69 ‘Manual Winding Tourbillon Erotic’ that retails for 690,000 CHF (because of course it does). That’s around 783,000 USD or over 1 million AUD.

This watch has been described on Facebook as “dangerously horny”, and it’s not hard to see why. The watch’s signature ‘Oracle’ complication contains three engraved rollers, which are made to spin at the press of a button, displaying a random ‘erotic’ phrase such as “I want to kiss your nipples” or “I long to caress you madly”… Or even less family-friendly combinations. The watch even has a button that makes the hour and minute hands momentarily retract so you can get a clearer look at your “deepest desires”, as Richard Mille puts it.

Scott isn’t the only big-name rapper who’s got one of these ‘pervy watches’. Canadian superstar Drake also has one, which he showed off during a 2018 sojourn in Las Vegas. Drake, who already has a reputation for being a flirt, was immediately clowned for his expensive, erotic wrist candy – time will tell if Scott will also receive the same sort of ribbing on social media.

2020 might have been good for ‘La Flame’, but he’s not resting on his laurels in 2021. Not only is he jumping on the hard seltzer trend with his own ‘agave-spiked’ seltzer brand, Cacti (named for not only its chief ingredient but also for Scott’s ‘Cactus Jack’ nickname and label) but he’s also gearing up to release his fourth studio album, titled Utopia.

Controversial Joe Rogan Dietary Challenge Takes The Internet By Fork
Controversial Joe Rogan Dietary Challenge Takes The Internet By Fork

Putting nothing on your fork but meat for 31 days sounds insane. Indeed, it’s, “probably unchartered territory for 99% of people on earth” – as Joe Rogan himself puts it.However, more and more people are wading into those mysterious waters, with figures like Rogan – a comedian, podcaster and UFC commentator – introducing the words “world carnivore month” to the public mouth.Though Rogan has spoken about the benefits he felt on The Carnivore Diet before, this is the first time he has introduced it (to DMARGE’s knowledge) as a monthly challenge. The response online has been almost as polarised as a US presidential debate.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Joe Rogan (@joerogan)

One user wrote: “The Carnivore Diet is essentially a cult,” claiming it’s, “The most anti-science diet that exists, started entirely to troll vegans.”

“You’re promoting one of the least healthy, most environmentally destructive, insanely wasteful, and unnecessarily cruel lifestyle choices that exists.”

Another quipped, “Joe ‘felt great other than explosive diarrhea’ Rogan.” Another wrote: “artery clogger.”Others left words of encouragement. Mikhaila Peterson wrote, “Great. That’ll encourage a lot of people. Still going hard 3 years for the arthritis” and UFC veteran Ben Saunders wrote: “I have yet to try it, didn’t realize this was a national event. Now I’m questioning if I should try it myself.”Numerous others have (anecdotally) backed up Rogan’s claims the diet made them feel amazing. Others have tried it and suffered, being told by a professor of nutrition they were at risk of scurvy.Though some claim to have achieved remarkable results from the carnivore diet, far too much of the evidence is anecdotal. But in an era where low carb gurus are trusted over science, maybe the blossoming of diets like this are not all that surprising. Could anything sum up modern America better than people, despite having better technology and more scientific literature at their disposal than ever before, stubbornly attempting diets that used to make pirates ill?Of course, the claims people with autoimmune disorders and arthritis have been helped by the diet are interesting, and worthy of research. As are Joe Rogan’s claims it made him feel great. Who doesn’t want to feel great? But we’d like to see a lot more research done before trying The Carnivore Diet ourselves. As Healthline reports, “Not surprisingly, experts have pushed back against the carnivore diet.”“They cite numerous potential problems, including scurvy, constipation, and inflammation of the colon.”

“Despite the Peterson family’s effusive anecdotal evidence of the diet’s ability to cure depression and autoimmune disorders, there have yet to be rigorous scientific studies to prove such claims.”

Rogan explains his logic as following: “January is ‘world carnivore diet’ month. I did it last year, lost 12 pounds and really felt great (other than having ruthlessly explosive diarrhea for the first couple weeks), so I’m gonna give it a go again this year.”

“It really did have a remarkable affect on my energy levels, so I’m curious if I get that same response this time around.”

A Gentlemen’s Guide To Buying The Perfect Bag
A Gentlemen’s Guide To Buying The Perfect Bag

When it comes to bags, men aren’t solely limited to a backpack or a messenger back, oh no. A whole world of bag options awaits the stylishly savvy gent wearing stylish clothing, with numerous styles and colours to choose from to suit different occasions.

Men’s bags represent a multi-billion dollar industry, with guys purchasing more bags than ever before and wearing all types. And, the favouring of the man-bag (yes, we said it) –  be it crossbody bag, sling bag, weekender bag, or even a toiletry bag.

Take a firm hold of the bag trend, anyway which way you can. But please, just don’t call it a ‘murse’.

Breaking It Down

Featbag

A more casual workplace and the melange between function and fashion are driving the men’s bag furore. But with several bag types on offer today and infinite styles to choose from, which bag is the right one for you? We break down the five key bags for men, before running through points to consider before purchasing your next carry thing. Problem is, you’re gonna want more than just one.

The Tote Bag

Tote

Worn by fashion types today, the tote is all grown up from library days; serving an important role in the casual accessories cannon. Ideal for storing everything while on the go (think tablet, books, keys, phone, wallet and whatever else), the tote is very practical. Factor in its boxy streamline shape, as it hangs off your shoulder or dangles from the clasp of your hand, which packs a style punch.

The way to treat the tote is as a played-down version to the briefcase; perfect for the casual office bag or weekend day-out – somewhere that requires a bit of gear to tag along for the ride too.

Choose from cotton, canvas and leather, and an assortment of patterns (from geometrics to polkadots) – in a mass of colourways. As totes are unisex, stay away from excessive bling – like metallic chains or fluffy toy-things designed to dangle from the handles. Keep the tote clean – sans baggage, and you’ll totes be winning.

The Duffel Bag

Holdall

The urban traveller and gym junkie cannot afford not to invest in the duffel bag. Despite the ruggedness of a gym session, a spacious yet well-shaped duffel is the only way to escort your goods to the locker room.

RELATED: Best Gym Bags For Men

Going for leather is a style no-brainer. But satiny, nylons offer a sportsluxe aesthetic, especially with mixed in with trims of canvas of cotton. Wool is a great city-break duffel bag fabric; working with a unstructured blazer or a more casual, street chic look while on holiday.

The final thing is size. It matters. Keeping it under 55cm wide will ensure you can carry the hefty bag at full capacity, opting to detach the strap as a personal taste thing. And for travel, the half-a-metre size means it’s lightweight and the right size as carry-on luggage enough to be carried with ease.

The Messenger Bag

Messenger

Made famous by the retro postie on his bicycle, the messenger bag is recognised for its cross-body capabilities and satchel-esque aesthetic. While the flappy, buckled designs have their place, their is a surge in the zipped-up varieties, which are more rectangular in shape – almost like a large camera case.

Leather works best in this style for a more dressy look, as the bag’s shoulder-flung wearing is quite casual, which is why wearing it with a suit may not work for those of you in super corporate roles.

Select a medium-sized messenger bag to pair with weekend or work attire, and don’t succumb to the biggest faux pas of them all – having the strap so long that it slouches past your waistline. It’s juvenile and sloppy.

The Folio

Folio

The folio is today’s briefcase. As the hardcopy, daily planner turns streamline and digital (think tablet or smartphone), the bulkiness of the briefcase (and its role in carrying notepads, pens and files) is no longer so necessary for all at work.

Most suiting brands have ventured into folio territory, as men look to the leaner pouch to lug their work stuff about in. If you’re more old-school, the folio does come in a more zipped, wider silhouette for times when carrying paperwork cannot be avoided.

Like a document, stick to a comfortable, hand-held size and opt for leather if you’re after something more chic. And, the polished hide will match your lace-up shoes nicely.

The Backpack

Backpack

Another bag which is all grown up, is the backpack. Every brand from the budget right through to some of the biggest names in luxury constantly vie to reinvent the school boy carry thing with sleek designs and buttery leathers.

As well as the fabric – from sport nylons, to organic cottons – metallic hardware adds a touch of luxe to the backpack, with statement zips, pins and clips ramping up the detail.

While the backpack does work with a smart look (maybe not a suit – use your discretion in the workplace), its perfect place is with an athleisure-inspired melange of tailoring and active wear, especially in monochromatic hues. Très chic.

The Rules

Rules

Stay true to your personal style and favourite colours or patterns. Buying a bag may already be a bold move so don’t complicate things by going for a statement ponyskin folio or fluoro pink tote. Instead, approach bag shopping as you would browsing for a winter coat; sticking to muted hues (navy, black, olive, charcoal, or brown) and timeless fabrics (cotton, leather or wool). To begin with, anyway.

Don’t stuff the bag to full capacity. This goes for the weekender and backpack, as this type will most likely be used for city breaks or full days out of the house. Carrying all the essentials, an over-filled bag can look clumsy and bulky, and is a good way to tear the bag fabric or break the zip. And, it will weigh a tonne, leaving you hunched under the weight or switching regularly between hands to spread out the burden. It’s not a good look, so carry the bare essentials.

Consider the shoulder straps. Though they are designed to alleviate burdens, the straps – be it leather or canvas, have the potential to rough-up a nicely ironed work shirt or streamed suit jacket. If your prone to dishevelment, look for bags that offer both hand straps and a shoulder strap so you can switch around to keep your suits looking their best. And if you’re lugging stuff around for long periods of time, opt for a padded strap; your shoulder will thank you for it.

Avoid female tendencies. Certain styles, particularly folios and totes fall into this beware-of-women’s-wear -stereotypes category. It’s all in the design. Buy a folio in A4 size to avoid any ‘clutch’ confusion, and opt for masculine colours for the tote, sans bling.

Know your purpose. If you’re a hand-sy person (always on your phone or drinking coffee on the go) then the folio or weekender – where the bag is hand-held – may not be the most practical option for you. The messenger bag or backpack, in this case, is far better suited for your daily needs. Don’t let your bag be a labour of love.

Australian Surf Hero Sparks ‘Mullet Renaissance’ After Brave Rescue Goes Viral
Australian Surf Hero Sparks ‘Mullet Renaissance’ After Brave Rescue Goes Viral

Australia’s most vilified haircut may now be its greatest. After decades of being ribbed as a crime against humanity, mullets are now – perhaps – the coolest they’ve ever been.In a new year’s gift from the gods, giving the long-locked trend yet more momentum, is a recent incident involving Australian surfer – and proud mullet wearer – Mikey Wright. Wright averted what could have been a tragic event, rescuing a beachgoer from dangerous waters in Hawaii.

Mikey Wright is known for free-surfing, four-wheel driving and Akubras, but in recent years has made more and more inroads into the competitive scene. For this reason, the current 17 ranked men’s surfer in the world (after the first event of the year), is in Hawaii – competing. But After December’s Pipeline Masters, he found himself centre stage for another reason. After noticing a woman being swept off a patch of rocks, Wright sprang into action.Seeing the woman pinballing her way through hard volcanic mounds, Wright realised she needed help. Although other beachgoers tried to assist too, the current proved too strong.Fighting the surging waves and treacherous conditions, Wright dove in, swam out and picked her up. He supported her while they were pounded by waves, and helped bring her successfully to the shore, where the two were met by help from onlookers – including his sister (and two time women’s world champion surfer) Tyler Wright.Wright posted the incident to Instagram with the caption: “Hold my beer.” The story went viral. Mick Fanning, former world champion surfer and Australian surfing legend, wrote: “Wow that could of ended really bad!! Well done.”Jessi Miley-Dyer, a former CT surfer, said, “Who needs a cape when you have a mullet.”“I knew that mullet had some magic powers,” professional surfer and artist Otis Carey wrote.Since the rescue video has been published, two videos have emerged showing individuals inspired to rock mullets, both reposted by Wright on his Instagram story on Sunday the 4th.

The above man was not alone, with North Shore Surf Clinic posting a video too of what appears to be one of their students getting the mullet makeover.

This is not the first time a grom has got their Mikey Wright on, with Instagram account @memphis_surf getting the mullet (and attributing it to Mikey) a year and a half ago. That said: we doubt it’s a coincidence there were two in quick succession straight after Wright’s heroic moment. To cap it off, Mikey took to Instagram again today to show how he keeps his mullet in check. The secret? “The trick is… just do it really quick,” says his hairdresser.

It’s official: not all heroes wear capes.Coming soon to a beach near you.
