Thailand has launched matchmaking trips with Tinder (see: ‘the next Contiki’), luxury isolation packages and even quarantine resort stays which let you go golfing for two weeks, all in a bid to get tourists to return after ~2020~.Few have taken the Kingdom up on its offer. Though digital nomads are fleeing to (and establishing communities in) such far-flung places as Madeira, Barbados, Berlin, Bali and Lisbon, and though many Europeans are fleeing to places like Dubai to get their winter fix of sun, Thailand hasn’t seen the same interest as various other destinations.Per Bloomberg, “Just 346 overseas visitors have entered the country on average each month on special visas since October, according to the Thailand Longstay Company, which helps facilitate the program. That’s well below the government’s target of about 1,200 and a tiny fraction of the more than 3 million who came before the pandemic.”
“It’s hard to imagine a more luxurious place to spend two weeks of quarantine than the Anantara Phuket Suites & Villas in Thailand… Yet more than three months after the resort and more than a hundred like it reopened to extended-stay travelers in an attempt to revive Thailand’s battered economy, foreign arrivals have failed to meet even rock-bottom expectations.”

Speaking to Bloomberg, Ron Cooper, an American photographer and business consultant who would holiday abroad several times a year before the pandemic, shed light on why this could be, from a leisure traveller’s perspective: “It seems impractical to double the duration of a trip to satisfy the local quarantine requirements.”
“Add to that the cost of staying in a hotel for two unproductive weeks – not a very attractive proposition.”
Tourist destinations like Dubai and the Maldives, where entry restrictions and quarantine rules have been less cautious, have been far more successful at attracting tourists, albeit at a much smaller rate than they used to before the pandemic. As DMARGE discussed last week, Dubai has paid a high price for this, and is now weighing up more stringent rules. The Maldives, for their part, reopened their borders to overseas tourists in July 2020 without requiring a quarantine (only a negative Covid-19 test is required). The island paradise has seen more than 172,000 arrivals since then, Bloomberg reports, and “while new infections increased in the aftermath, they’ve since declined.”This may pose a problem for Thailand. As Dirk De Cuyper, chief executive officer of S Hotels & Resorts Pcl, whose December occupancy rate at Maldives properties was 70%, told Bloomberg, “Many travellers won’t buy into quarantine, particularly when other countries are opening up and they have no quarantine rules.”

Though Bloomberg reported (in January) “most Thais… are unlikely to want relaxed quarantine rules” (partly due to the fact local residents live close to the resorts, unlike in the Maldives, say, where properties are often isolated on their own islands), reports from February suggest there is still optimism in some parts. The Bangkok Post wrote on Monday the Thailand Tourism Standard (a Web-based Application which provides assessments and certified standards of Thailand Tourism) is set to “usher in new era of optimum Thai tourism.”The Thaiger reported on Tuesday that tourism-dependent locations will get high priority in vaccination drive. It has also been reported that, despite a lack of vaccine, Thai tourism authorities are still aiming for a Q3 revival of foreign tourism.Only time (and plane tickets) will tell how effective all this hot air proves. In the end, the country won’t properly fling open its borders until vaccines are widely available, government officials have said.

There are only two places where it’s appropriate to dress like a lumberjack: in a forest, or in Manhattan.New York fashion has long had a unique relationship with workwear. The humble hoodie was invented by Champion, an upstate New York brand, in the 1930s. The 80s and 90s saw the previously utilitarian Timberland boot become a staple of streetwear and hip-hop culture in the Big Apple. Less chainsaw and more gold chains. These days, the unofficial uniform of the Brooklyn hipster is flannels, beanies and boots. Sometimes suspenders, for maximum effect. It’s an aesthetic that’s even been given its own name: ‘lumbersexual’. Heard of it before?Bradley Cooper has. The Hollywood actor and filmmaker loves cosplaying as a lumberjack – although all jokes aside, it’s a winning look. Take this outfit he was spotted in last week while running errands with his daughter: classic red flannel over a marinière shirt, loose-fitting painter’s pants and Red Wing boots. It’s a yuppie masterpiece that proves the 46-year-old still has it.

It’s been a seatbelt yanking (then all too restful) 12 months for the travel industry. According to 2020 UN reports, the tourism industry is facing a $1 trillion loss, and 100 million jobs are at risk. The damage didn’t magically stop either when the clock ticked over into 2021. The hemorrhage continues, despite gradual improvements and the promise of a global vaccine rollout.
Looking for a symbol of said loss? Look at these majestic aircraft languishing in the Alice Spring desert.
One area which is improving, albeit amid setbacks, is domestic travel. Though there are still questions around the exact costs (vs. the benefits) of their relative freedom of movement, European residents are currently able to traverse much of The Continent, to give one example.
Likewise, though they are not allowed to fly overseas, Australians are able to travel again domestically with much greater ease than much of last year. Though Victoria is experiencing a “circuit breaker” lockdown after a quarantine cluster (which has been traced back to Thursday, February 4th) has spread to 17 active cases of COVID-19 across nine Melbourne households, flights are still operational between Melbourne and Sydney.
Last year we hopped aboard an eerily empty flight to provide readers with an insight into the sad new reality of flying domestically in Australia. This week a DMARGE correspondent flew business class from Sydney to Melbourne, documenting what it’s like in 2021 along the way.
Some of the behaviour in the airport lounge was surprising. Photos taken in the Qantas domestic Sydney lounge show some Australian business class passengers not wearing masks.
Various passengers in the lounge kept their masks on. All Qantas staff DMARGE observed kept their masks on too.
Many passengers didn’t, however.
Under the, “Do I need to wear a mask at the airport?” FAQ section of the Sydney Airport website, at the time of writing, advice reads, “The NSW Government has introduced a requirement for mandatory face masks in a number of indoor settings. Consistent with this, we require face masks in terminals from Monday 4 January. Please bring your own mask from home where you can.”
“Passengers can take additional measures to help avoid queuing and congregating at the airport by checking in online where possible and arriving at the advised time ahead of their flight, which is one hour for domestic flights, and three hours for international flights.”
“We encourage you to contact your airline prior to flying to familiarise yourself with their individual safety protocols.”
Qantas’ Fly Well guidelines seen by DMARGE online, however, do not mention mandatory mask-wearing in the lounge. The five bullet points regarding the lounge read as follows:
- Entry requirements – you’ll be required to provide your contact details as part of COVID-19 contact tracing requirements.
- Capacity restrictions – social distancing rules apply, therefore access may be impacted by current government requirements.
- Hand sanitising stations – installed throughout the lounge.
- Amended services – hosted food and beverage services replace our traditional self-serve buffets.
- Regular cleaning – highly frequented areas are cleaned regularly.
Virgin Australia’s domestic airport lounge web page does not mention mandated mask-wearing either (at the time of writing).
It remains mandatory to wear a mask in Sydney on public transport (at the time of writing). Many supermarkets, however, have now relaxed their rules and made it optional (as have most cafes and restaurants) in Sydney.
Looking skywards, however, according to Virgin Australia’s current health and wellbeing guidelines, “Face masks are required to be worn in Australia airports and on all domestic Australian flights, except in limited circumstances. Spare masks are available at the boarding gate and onboard.”
“We encourage you to check with the relevant state or territory health departments for the most up to date requirements at your departure location and destination.”
Australian and state and territory governments have issued guidance on when a person will be exempt from wearing a face mask. These exemptions include:
- If you have a physical or mental health condition, illness or disability that prevents you from wearing a face mask.
- If you have trouble breathing wearing a mask.
- If you are unable to remove a face mask without assistance.
- If you are assisting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing and their contacts.
On the topic of exemptions, Virgin Australia’s guidelines state: “If you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing a face mask, you may wish to follow our medical clearance process to obtain a medical clearance that covers your face mask exemption.”
“If you obtain a medical clearance, we will be able to let our crew know that you have a face mask exemption to make your journey more seamless.”

Tennis is big business, and most top-level players boast their own brand deals.Rafael Nadal has his own signature Richard Mille watch models. Roger Federer has his own On Running sneakers. Serena Williams has her own Off-White x Nike collaborative collection. You get the picture. That’s why it’s so surprising that world women’s doubles #1 and 2021 Australian Open singles quarter-finalist Hsieh Su-Wei doesn’t have any. The 35-year-old Taiwanese champ stands out amongst a sea of fully-branded athletes as one of the few pros not to have any clothing sponsorships, meaning she regularly plays in an unusual mix of apparel. For many athletes, this would be a source of embarrassment – to be that far along in your career and not have sponsors. But Hsieh simply doesn’t give a shit, saying she’d rather focus on practice rather than hashing out clothing deals. It’s a reflection of her unique character: known for her highly diverse playing style and outspoken personality, she also dresses in whatever she wants, having been described by her coach as “like Times Square on the court with [all] the different logos”, 7 News details.Take this outfit she wore during the 2019 US Open, where she combined a Ralph Lauren top with a frayed (yet still kinda chic) US Open visor in a zero f*cks given combination that had fans lauding her style and individuality.

Women’s Tennis Blog relates that there are several theories as to why the star is currently sponsorless, “mostly having to do with politics”. Hsieh has had a rocky relationship with the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association, which is largely responsible for coordinating sponsorships for athletes. Hsieh’s also famously outspoken and not afraid to voice controversial opinions, which sponsors might view as bad PR.Most pertinently perhaps is the fact that sports clothing giants don’t want to jeopardise their relationship with China. Not only is the Chinese market incredibly lucrative for brands, but many also manufacture there as well – so supporting Hsieh could put that all at risk. Sad but true.RELATED: Research Busts Common Myth Australians Believe About China’s Luxury Goods MarketWhatever the reasons, we don’t care. It’s refreshing to see a tennis player that’s not a human billboard.Another player that’s been sans sponsors this Australian Open has been local legend Thanasi Kokkinakis, who notably won his first round game against Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon in a “$6 Kmart special” outfit, Fox Sports reports.Sadly both Hsieh and Kokkinakis have been knocked out of the tournament, with Hsieh going down against Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals earlier today and Kokkinakis losing out to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in a gruelling four and a half hour game last week.

Hipsters are mocked for many sins. But, when you think about it, the absurdity of an unkempt beard and perfectly slicked back hair pales in comparison to the Finance Bro trend of ordering Piccolos and Macchiatos in takeaway cups, only to drink them in two gulps.I was so enraged by this phenomenon in 2018 that I spat out my pumpkin spiced latte, whipped out the laptop, and wrote an article claiming “takeaway Piccolos proves why Australia’s cafe culture will never match Europe’s.”The thrust of the argument? It’s environmentally rude, and doesn’t give you the same mental break sitting down and sipping for five minutes does.“Not only is this slightly antithetical to our ‘green’ values, but it is a symptom of a larger problem: our non existent cafe culture. Instead of socialising while we sip our daily dose of black (or brown) gold, we stress down the street with it, or sup it mindlessly at our desks.”
“Maybe instead of focussing on expensive keep cups and vilifying plastic, we should focus on making the most sustainable solution—a mug and saucer—a better experience?”
Unfortunately, in a hypocritical turn of events, I have recently become everything I so hated. I now drink Piccolos and Macchiatos. Sometimes from a takeaway cup.
“People can drink their coffee however they want.”
What grinds his teeth is when people “don’t know their orders” and try to make modifications once the extractors and steam pump have already been set into action.
“I had one guy this morning ask for a Skinny Latte, then at the last minute, after I’d already charged him, he asked if he could change his order to an extra shot. All with a queue of people waiting.”
“It made it kind of awkward.”When asked about his thoughts on ordering a Piccolo ‘to go’ Max told us, in his opinion, it’s no different to ordering any other drink as a takeaway. In fact, when you think about it, “smaller cups create less waste than larger ones” Max pointed out.RELATED: I Wore The Official F*ckboi Footwear Of 2020 For A Month & It Changed My LifeThat’s not to say they are better than a Keep Cup, just that my 2018 disdain for takeaway Piccolo drinkers was misplaced.I’ll cop that.

Being the son of the most famous football player of all time plus a highly successful popstar-come-fashion designer comes with certain privileges.Take 18-year-old Romeo Beckham, the second eldest of David and Victoria Beckham’s four children and a celebrity in his own right. Both Romeo and his older brother Brooklyn have been able to parlay their fame into successful modelling careers and are both worth millions… On top of being the kids of millionaires themselves. In short, they’re very fortunate young men. When I was 18, I was pretty pleased to have a Certina – to me, that was a fancy watch. Romeo’s watch situation at the same age is a little more luxe, however.Taking to Instagram to share a photo from his holiday last year in Italy – enjoying his time behind the wheel of a classic Fiat 500 Jolly – Beckham casually showed off a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time (ref. 5164A-001) worth around 70,000 USD (~90,000 AUD).

From overestimating how often your friends have sex to assuming first date ‘thrills’ are a no go if you want something to develop into a serious relationship, we’ve busted all sorts of bedroom myths over the years here at DMARGE.Speaking of taboo topics, iconic Instagram account @lalalaletmeexplain, which regularly shares viral dating culture memes (alongside cutting analysis of each one), recently posted an insight everyone could do with hearing. The British page admin, who describes themselves as a qualified sex and relationships educator, wrote that there is more to “fake moaning” than you might think. An anthropological assessment, if you will.“To the women who have slept with anyone I dated between the years 1998 and 2016, I am sorry. I convinced those men that inserting a penis into a vagina produced magical sensations and that a few pumps with no clitoral stimulation resulted in screaming orgasms. I let them believe that they had Godly willys that had to do nothing more than go in and out for 6 minutes to achieve climax. I then allowed them to go back out into the wild with misplaced confidence and zero bedroom skills, thinking that they had mastered this sex thing, and I am truly apologetic to all the women that came after me (or rather didn’t cum) for that.”
View this post on Instagram
“When we tell men that good sex for women requires far more than penetration,” she continued, “many of them don’t believe us. They often scoff at the idea and make out that there must be something wrong with us because ALL of their previous partners came at least 12 times every single time they had sex. The fakery is so common and so rife that they just cannot get their heads around the fact that 8 out of every 10 women they have slept with definitely did not cum from their penis alone.”“Their confidence has been bolstered so much over the years that they find it very difficult to accept the truth. It’s a bruise to their fragile egos to feel that aged 30 they now need to unlearn everything they thought they knew. Porn really does not help with this. You can tell a lot about a man from how he responds to conversations about the orgasm gap. Decent men take the learning on board, narcissistic/lazy/selfish men refuse to hear it.”“As well apologising to my exes future partners, I also want to apologise to myself. I tolerated dead, man focused sex for years because I really didn’t know any better. I thought I was broken and that I didn’t have the physical ability to cum with a man present and so I gave up on even trying. I faked it because I didn’t want anyone to think I was bad in bed – the irony – and because after a while I knew I wasn’t going to cum so I felt I needed to fake it for it to end. This has to stop. We have to find our voices and our orgasms and we have to stop giving mediocre men false confidence.”This comes in a context of other hookup debates, which have done the rounds online as of late, like who should pay for the morning after Uber and should you pretend to know what you’re doing when you haven’t got a clue?On the former topic, Katie Wilson, Director of Communications at HUD, a “sex positive app,” previously spoke to DMARGE about how on-the-surface simple issues like “who should pay for the Uber” (and fake moaning) can betray much deeper sociological phenomenons. On the Uber issue, Katie said, “Society has evolved beyond ‘A man must always hold the door open, fetch the lady’s wrap, and pull out her chair at dinner.”“I think the whole reason this is a social dilemma is that there aren’t any set rules about this sort of thing.”
“Women are taking control of their sexuality, wanting to be able to date (and to have sex) like men do, and of course this means they should be able to order their own Uber after a hookup.”
But just because they’re able to, doesn’t always mean they’re obliged to: “Looking more deeply, I think this is an issue of equity more than simple equality.”“Typically, women put a lot more effort (and money) into a hookup than men do. We wax and groom our bodies, put on expensive lingerie, do our makeup – all of which cost a lot of time and a small fortune to the typical male’s ‘shower and body spray’ pre-hookup routine.”“So even before a hookup takes place, we’ve made a significant investment in it.”
“For the guy to order me an Uber after we hook up is an acknowledgment that he sees the effort and wants to do his part.”
“And here’s a dirty little secret that men don’t know about – cishet (someone who identifies as the gender they were born with and is attracted to someone of the opposite gender) hookups are not only more geared toward men just because women who seek casual sex are often branded as sluts while men are lauded for being players, but also, there’s the orgasm gap to consider.”“Research shows that up to 70 per cent of women don’t actually reach orgasm during male-female sex, while over 90 per cent of men do.”
“So are you trading an Uber for the fact that you had an orgasm and she didn’t?”
“Ultimately, treat people the way you want to be treated. Have some respect for what women go through, not just physically but emotionally and culturally, in order to be the sexually liberated woman you’re hooking up with.”“Do men really want to go back to the days when sex was only supposed to take place in the missionary position in your darkened marital bedroom? Then pay for the damn Uber. It’s a small price compared to what women have to deal with.”

When you’ve got a net worth of over 285 million USD like Justin Bieber does, even the most expensive designer sneakers become a trifle. A different pair of Balenciagas for every day of the week? Throw out your all-white Givenchys as soon as they get a little dirty? Anything is possible.Thankfully, Bieber’s nowhere near that lavish. The 26-year-old Canadian popstar might have a taste for expensive custom cars and own a collection of solid gold watches but he’s far more grounded when it comes to the kind of footwear he likes to rock.Indeed, some would say that he’s almost too lowkey: the man has an obsession with rubber clogs – “the footwear contraceptive for men“. But we’re not here to talk about Crocs today. Instead, we’d like to focus on some (actually stylish) shoes ‘The Biebs’ has been rocking recently that are not only highly fashionable but actually rather affordable.Bieber shared a photo of himself hard at work in the studio in a simple white shirt + blue jeans outfit, spiced up with a pair of Nike SB Dunk Hi ‘Doraemon’ sneakers. This is style 101: dress simply so your sneakers stand out, and it works. Bieber’s footwear choice confirms something that sneakerheads have known for a while, too – namely, that Dunks are a consistently winning choice.
View this post on Instagram
Superficially, Dunks resemble one of Nike’s most famous sneakers (especially the ‘Hi’ variants like Bieber’s): the Air Jordan Is. Both Jordan Is and Dunks enjoy similarly exalted places in the sneaker pantheon and are both eminently collectible, but they have one key difference. The retail price for a pair of Jordans starts at around 170 USD, whereas Dunks are more like 100 USD.RELATED: Rami Malek Stays Ahead Of The Fashion Curve With World’s Most Hyped Men’s Converse SneakersSure, aftermarket speculation often pushes the prices of both Dunks and Jordans into the stratosphere, making the retail price somewhat academic – but the fact still remains that Dunks are way cheaper. They’re arguably cooler, too, a real “if you know you know” sneaker. All in all, they’re a great choice for anyone looking to up their sneaker game. The ‘People’s Jordans’, if you will.Bieber’s pair have been nicknamed the ‘Doraemons’ in reference to the wildly popular Japanese manga of the same name. If you want a pair, StockX is probably your best bet – but you can easily find other Dunks at Nike’s online store.

Australians love to travel, but the COVID-19 crisis has meant that international travel – heck, even most domestic travel – has been off the cards for most of us for the last twelve months.Another trend that the pandemic has precipitated is a surge in car ownership, with dealers running out of new stock and used car prices continuing to climb across the country. It’s mostly because people don’t want to be taking public transport right now, but many Australians have also bought vehicles because they’re a source of entertainment: working on them, flexing on police officers in them… Oh, and driving them, of course.Enter Driving Solutions: a driver training and events company who have had the masterstroke of running open track nights at Sydney Motorsports Park at Eastern Creek. The nights have been insanely popular, with the prospect of taking your whip around one of the Southern Hemisphere’s fastest racetracks with no speed limits while the sun’s down proving a hit with drivers. Now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is just something boy racers are getting hot under the collar about – but you’d be wrong, as Driving Solutions manager James Stewart has shared with The Sydney Morning Herald.
View this post on Instagram
Indeed, Driving Solutions are finding that it’s “high end customers” with disposable incomes that are turning up in droves to these events, “because they [aren’t] travelling to Europe or Asia on vacation.”In fact, the only thing more exciting than driving yourself might be spotting the kinds of cars that are turning up: BMWs, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Lotuses, McLarens… An altogether different kind of sight-seeing.The nights run once a month, accept only 75 drivers a night and entry costs $275 – expensive, but much less than a speeding ticket. Despite the loss in revenue from fines the boys in blue are happy, too, as they see these sorts of events as a way for drivers to get that need for speed out of their system in a safe, controlled environment.Track events aren’t the only extra-curricular vehicular escapades Aussies with money to burn have been turning to in lieu of international travel. There’s also been a marked rise in motorhome conversions, with ‘statecation’ roadtrips on the rise, particularly on the East Coast.RELATED: This $20,000 Retro Nissan Van Is The Perfect ‘Statecation’ WarriorIt’s really a win-win-win. Australian roads are safer, there’s less tragic scenes like this Ferrari’s untimely demise on the Gold Coast, and money that would otherwise be spent overseas is being spent within the country. Now, if only we could afford a supercar…
