What Is The Average Penis Size In Australia?
What Is The Average Penis Size In Australia?

If you’ve found yourself asking the question “what is the average penis size in Australia?” then you’re in the right place.

We guarantee virtually all men have wondered just how they measure up in the penis department. And if you search online, you’re usually presented with contradictory information.

To determine once and for all the average penis size in Australia is, you need to be looking for studies that collate a vast amount of data (occasionally this data is self-reported) from men who have been comfortable grabbing a measuring tape and measuring their penis in the name of science.

Fortunately, that study exists and it stands erect above all others to provide the answers you seek, and it found the average penis size in Australia is 5.24 inches (13.28cm). If you’re wondering how Australia measures up with the rest of the world, you can find a comparison table here. One quick look and it’s apparent Australia falls far behind countries such as Congo and Ecuador, with average sizes of 7.05 and 6.7-inches, respectively.

Average Penis Size

It’s not uncommon for men to suffer from anxiety when it comes to talking about their penis. The vast majority of our worries our influenced by online porn, where it pays to be particularly well-endowed. These worries only intensify if your online viewing habits turn into porn addiction.

When you consider the penis usually stops growing around the age of 18, meaning whatever you’re bestowed with is what you’re going to have for the rest of your life (sidenote: it can even shrink as you get older) then it can immediately become clear why so many men feel concerned about the size of their member.

Average Penis Size Study

You’re going to find a wealth of information when you search for the average penis size in Australia and around the world, but the only study you should be taking note of comes from the British Journal of Urology. The BJU’s study collated data from 17 academic papers and was first published in 2015 and set out to determine the average “flaccid and erect penis length and circumference in up to 15,521 men.”

Health professionals recorded penis measurements, which is one of the key factors that makes the BJU study so trustworthy. Other studies looking into average penis size may use self-reported data, so there is great potential for some men to not record an accurate result. This could largely be due to them thinking their size is either small, or below average. The irony is off the charts.

Average Flaccid Penis Size

Average flaccid penis length was determined to be 3.61-inches (9.16 cm) and average flaccid circumference is 3.66-inches (9.31 cm). If you find you don’t quite measure up with these, don’t get too worked up about it. Flaccid penis length and circumference don’t always indicate your erect size – ever heard of the phrase grower vs shower? – and of course doesn’t influence your sexual performance.

Average Erect Penis Size

Image: British Journal of Urology

This is the information you’re looking for. The average global erect penis size is 5.16-inches (13.12 cm) and average erect circumference was found to be 4.59-inches (11.66 cm). If your dick size is longer and thicker than these, then congratulations, you’re going to be in a minority of men. If you don’t quite measure up, it’s really not the end of the world.

The graph above shows which percentile each average penis length falls into. If you take a 6-inch (15.24cm) erect penis, for example, this graph shows it falls around the 90th percentile. This means, for every 100 men, only 10 would have a penis around 6-inches or larger.

When Is A Penis Too Small?

According to Medical News Today, a separate study looking into average penis size (and which found a different figure to that of the BJU) concluded “only men with a flaccid length of less than 4cm (1.6 in), or a stretched or erect length of less than 7.5 cm (3 in) should be considered candidates for penile lengthening.”

Micropenis

Micropenis is an official medical term given when a penis is well under the ‘normal’ size range and is usually diagnosed at birth.

According to Healthline, a “male infant’s genitalis develop in response to certain hormones, mainly androgens. If his body doesn’t produce enough androgens or if the body doesn’t respond normally to androgen production, one result can be a micropenis, also called a microphallus.”

A micropenis still functions as a regular penis, i.e. men can still urinate and get an erection. In adult males, a micropenis is determined if the stretched penile length is 3.67-inches or less.

How To Measure The Penis

If you’re interested to find out how you measure up, and you’re one of, what we would imagine to be, the very few men who haven’t already got out their measuring tape, then you need to know there is a right and a wrong way to go about it.

To measure your penis, get yourself a fabric measuring tape or a piece of string, and measure along the top side of your penis. Push the tape measure or string into your pubic bone to get past any fat being stored. Some men may measure along the side or the base of their penis, but this will provide a skewed result.

If you’re using string, mark the point where the string meets the tip of the glans (the head of the penis) and use a ruler to determine your size.

To measure the circumference of your penis, wrap a measuring tape or string around the widest part of your penis. This is usually at the base, or in the middle.

What Size Penis Do Women Prefer?

Due to the influence of porn, many men believe that women desire a big penis in order to be sexually satisfied, but that isn’t always the case.

Sure, you’ll likely come across size queens in your sexual escapades, but one study found 77% of females found penis length to be unimportant or totally unimportant, while 21% said the exact opposite. A separate study found 45 out of 50 sexually active undergraduate females determined girth to be more important than length for sexual satisfaction.

A 2015 study asked 75 women to select their ideal penis size from 33 possible dimensions. The ideal penis size differed depending on whether they were selecting for a long-term partner or a more casual encounter.

For long-term sexual partners, a desired length of 6.3-inches (16cm) was determined and a girth of 4.8-inches (12.2cm). For one-time sexual partners, these measurements increased slightly to 6.4-inches (16.3cm) for length and 5-inches (12.7cm) for girth.

And if that isn’t enough to convince you on women’s preferences, an OnlyFans model has come out and said she definitely doesn’t like anything too big.

Penis Enlargement

Despite damning evidence that could cause men to find out they’re actually above average in size, the influence of online porn is so great that many men will still think about penis enlargement surgery.

Ultimately, penis enlargement surgery and the use of penis fillers is discouraged as it could cause problems achieving an erection and other sexual-performanced-related problems later down the line.

The bottom line? Try to worry less about the size of your member and focus more on working with what you’ve got. If you’ve got some busy hands or a tantalising tongue, then foreplay in the bedroom is your best form of attack.

How To Wear A Field Jacket | Outfit Inspiration For Men
How To Wear A Field Jacket | Outfit Inspiration For Men

Soldiers first wore the field jacket. The Britons paraded the utility coat in the 19th century, serving as a practical uniform when stationed in India: lightweight for the equatorial heat and smartly cut from sturdy cotton canvas. Decades later, the Americans recruited the field jacket on patrol in Vietnam, the M65 the most popular, recognised by its olive green hue, billowy front pockets, and a built-in hood and epaulettes.

The earthy tones saw the field jacket transition onto the African plains, offering camouflage for safari hunters, who also relished in the jacket’s breathability and function. But it was Monsieur Saint Laurent who brought the field-cum-fashion jacket to the concrete jungle in Paris in the Sixties, before Hollywood endorsed it with Sir Roger Moore, the coat gaining a civilian following thanks to a stylish James Bond.

What Is The Field Jacket

Nowadays, the field jacket ricochets down the runway and battles it out in the street-style scene. From Milan to New York, stylish men have adopted the former-army piece as their very own, wearing it with tailoring to work or over a simple t-shirt and jeans.

While the basic construction – a mid-length jacket with four front pockets – hasn’t altered that much today, the colours, fabrics and textures of contemporary field jackets have altered to meet changing style tastes – and different weather condition.

Love the look but not sure how to recruit it? We’ve laid out 5 men’s field jacket style tips, making it easy. The biggest piece of advice? The field jacket should feel – and look – effortless when worn. Just throw it on over any of your current go-to outfits and walk out the door.

Field Jacket With A Suit

The classic field jacket is the perfect office layer, serving as a functional and stylish top coat for the daily commute. Paired with a neutral two-piece business suit, opt for a sharp fitting field coat in deep olive and keep the details refined: a length that covers the hemline of the suit jacket and a belted waist for a tailored, clean aesthetic.

And look into added features. Some models come with an insulating inlay (interchangeable from season to season) and boast a contemporary nylon shell to avoid creasing, but with a suede-trim collar and fleece-lined pockets for a touch of luxury that’s subtle. Just add a textural woven tie and cutaway-collared shirt in baby blue and you’re office prepped.

Field Jacket With A Shirt

Meeting up with the crew for pre-weekend drinks? Dressed-down Fridays welcome the field jacket in buttery tan or cream suede, the beltless style and natural colours creating a more refined, less rockstar top layer than say, a black leather perfecto.

Belstaff’s slim-fit suede design is a luxurious take on the army jacket. Embracing flap pockets, there’s plenty of roomy for wallet, phone and keys, fastened with an easy-slide, two-way zipper. Fully-lined with an ultra-soft finish, it’s an informal elegance piece, taking you from night to day in style. Layer it over collared shirting and clean cut trousers, slipping in a fine-gauge knit and silk neckerchief – adding smoothness to the suede.

Wearing Black Field Jackets

Even the monochrome and minimal can enlist the field jacket for daily wear. Keeping things black, opt for a sleek and lightweight blazer design. With minimal appendages and neat button fastening, layer it over a basic t-shirt, black chinos and white leather sneakers in low-cut silhouette.

Burberry offers a a fully reversible model with military quilt topstitching, adding much needed texture and dimension to an all-black look. Despite the absence of metal, the jacket’s patch pockets, a small throat tab and subtle elbow patches give back points of interest without derailing simplicity. And when you tire from black, reverse the jacket and you’ll be a navy seal in no time.

Wearing Waxed Field Jackets

We have raincoats, but is there much option for keeping stylishly dry in the wet? Enter the waxed field jacket. A timeless classic, the weather-proof wax cotton boasts protection suitable for long periods outside; the black finish providing a statement sheen that’s less ostentatious than say, patent leather.

Barbour offers its take on waxed, finish with the brand’s signature corduroy collar, red check lining and logo patch for something a little heritage too. The ruggedness rolls well with denim: a jean jacket layered under an open waxed field, atop a plain t-shirt and black slim jeans for a great fabric mix.

For a rock edge, simply add Wayfarer shades and suede Chelsea boots. And the beauty of waxed cotton? Like denim, it ages with the wearer: each crease, fold and blemish a symbol of individuality and a unique story to tell. Denim-heads, rejoice.

Wearing Camo Field Jackets

Camo print is taking street wear by storm this season, adding some tough-guy patterning to urban, skate-inspired outfits. Opting for an authentic camouflage, team the jacket with more refined casual pieces: Breton shirt, cropped trousers and low cut sneakers. Or with washed out denim jeans and chunky boots, the latter emphasising the military aspect well.

Saint Laurent has crafted the perfect California-meets-captain jacket with a short shape shirt jacket style in fitted cut. The added sewn-on regiment patches reimagine military days, as do the many pockets. Roll the sleeves for summer and wear open, as it’s made from light cotton. The idea is to look like it’s a vintage second-hand find, but better – without the bulky fit and heavy-duty fabric of yesteryear. And dust, obviously.

Field Jackets FAQ

What is versatile colour for a field jacket?

Apart from the original olive green, khaki is a classic choice but if you want a more stylish alternative, go for grey. With field jackets it is best to keep things relatively neutral.

How should a field jacket fit?

Your field jacket should sit close to your body, not too tight especially when worn closed, or too baggy and loose. There should be allowance to wear layers underneath while not looking too bulky.

Can you wear a field jacket with a suit?

Sure. There are field jackets made of premium fabrics like suede that you can wear in formal affairs. Choose one with a trimmer fit and with cotton-linen tailoring. Ditch the blazer and pair your field jacket with tailored trousers and a white Oxford shirt.

Enter waterproof shoes….

You can easily invest in a rainproof jacket to keep your body dry, so why not give your feet the same treatment? Many of the pairs on this list have been designed to be waterproof from the get-go, and we’ll admit their designs might not be to everyone’s taste. However, some younger brands have been able to do their research and understand exactly what it is the modern gent needs from a pair of waterproof sneakers, so have been able to combine timeless style with modern waterproof tech.

Waterproof Shoes FAQ

How to know if a shoe is waterproof?

The best waterproof shoes are typically made of rubber and/or PVC materials for the sole and synthetic leather or neoprene for the upper. The footwear’s non-porous membrane keeps liquids from penetrating inside.

Can suede or canvas shoes be waterproofed?

Yes. You can use waterproofing sprays on suede, canvas, and other shoes with textured materials. Just look for ones with silicone or acrylic polymer as ingredients.

Is weather resistant the same as waterproof?

No. Weather resistant shoes are not as impermeable as waterproof shoes. While they can protect your feet from getting wet during rains, they will not prevent water from seeping in when submerged.

Australia’s Pet Obsession Is Changing The Way We Work, Date & Buy Property
Australia’s Pet Obsession Is Changing The Way We Work, Date & Buy Property

We Australians have always been big pet lovers, but over the last two years during COVID we’ve seen pet numbers absolutely skyrocket – and this newfound pet obsession is having a big effect on the rest of our lives.

It’s no mystery why we’ve become so pet-obsessed over the last two years – and especially obsessed with dogs. The multiple waves of social distancing restrictions and lockdowns we’ve endured have made the prospect of a furry friend particularly appealing. Hell, walking the dog was one of the few COVID-safe activities we could do during the worst of the pandemic.

COVID restrictions may have come and gone but our pets are here to stay – and Australians are increasingly being influenced by their pets when it comes to making big life decisions.

For instance, pets in the workplace. Office dogs are everywhere (hell, in our building here at DMARGE, there are over a dozen dogs, including our very own office dog) and Australian professionals are increasingly demanding pet-friendly work environments as we head back to the office.

New research commissioned by Uber Pet has revealed a rise in Aussies wanting to continue to work alongside their ‘pandemic pups’ as more workplaces move to hybrid working policies.

80% of surveyed Australian dog owners say they would return to the office more often if they could bring their dog, while 60% say they would be inclined to accept a job offer if their workplace was dog friendly.

That’s a rather interesting statistic for employers, considering the state of the labour market – offering a dog-friendly workplace is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage in Australia.

Image: Four Paws Australia

Additionally, Uber Pet’s research reveals that 71% of workers believe their office is under-utilised post-COVID – in part due to the lack of canine-friendly office policies.

Pet ownership is also increasingly becoming a prerequisite for dating success, with single Australians increasingly looking for partners who are also pet lovers.

Data from top dating app Tinder demonstrates, for instance, that users who feature their dog in their profile photos get, on average, 5% more matches. On top of that, a recent survey of Australian Tinder users reveals that 45% are more likely to like someone’s picture if they have a dog on their profiles.

Further than that, 72% say it’s a deal-breaker if their dog doesn’t like someone and 59% admit to dating someone purely because they have a dog… We guess ‘dog baiting’ does have its merits, then.

RELATED: Dog Baiting: The Sneaky Dating Strategy You’ll Go Barking Mad For

Oh, and for what it’s worth: Tinder’s data says that Golden Retrievers, closely followed by Huskies and Labradors are the most desirable four-legged friends for a potential match to have in tow. Now you know.

Our pet obsession is also affecting the property market. Research from Choosi shows that 61% of Australian pet owners are influenced by the needs of their pets when choosing where they live – making pet-suitable properties and pet-friendly rentals increasingly desirable.

Image: Tinder AU

Landlords are reacting to this trend: data from Ray White shows that over the last 12 months to June, the number of rentals advertised as pet-friendly in Sydney jumped by 14%. Similar trends have been observed in Newcastle and Adelaide.

Developers, too, are paying attention. Because buyers and investors are increasingly demanding pet-friendly properties, developments are dedicating more space to pet-related amenities like green spaces and facilitating pet-friendly businesses, The Property Market suggests.

It’s not all good news. More and more properties are becoming pet-friendly, but the dramatic surge in pet ownership means that there’s still not enough supply to go around, with many pet-obsessed Aussies still very much at the mercy of landlords, ABC News reports.

Still, it’s all worth it for your ‘fur baby’, right?

The ‘Ugly Truth’ About Staying In An Instagram-Famous Treehouse
The ‘Ugly Truth’ About Staying In An Instagram-Famous Treehouse

A video blowing up on Instagram purports to show the “ugly truth” about staying in a treehouse in Nusa Penida. The video shows how – although the view is amazing – the inside leaves a lot to be desired.

Nusa Penida is beautiful. Despite there being a whole lot more to it than brain-melting views, that’s basically all us tourist hordes know it for. But just because you see fantastic things on Instagram, doesn’t mean everything behind the screen is as amazing. And at the risk of sounding picky, there is one Instagram-famous house in the clifftop trees of Nusa Penida (an island 12 km South-East of Bali) where the interior doesn’t quite match the incredible expectations generated by the exterior.

Enter: Instagram user @daianadaiana. Daiana recently took to Instagram with an ‘Instagram vs. Reality’ video of Nusa Penida’s celebrated tree house accommodation: Rumah Pohon, Tree House Molenteng.

The tree house sits high on a cliff on the southeastern side of Nusa Penida, near the Atuh Beaches and Diamond beaches. This mountain is called Thousand Islands Viewpoints, and from it you get spectacular views of the coast both ways, as well as Batupadasan and Batuabah islands. The video starts by showing viewers the magnificent cliff-top house sitting pretty over a cliff and the shimmering beaches.

RELATED: ‘Stop Deifying Foreign Tourists’ Bali Urged To Make Big Change

Things take a turn for the worse, however, as the music changes, and viewers are led up the steps and into the house. You enter the wooden tree house only to see a bare bones set up. The house comprises a grey mattress on the floor, crumpled sheets, a water bottle (also on the floor) and a fan on a desk. Not exactly Guantanamo, but a little closer to a squatter’s flat than you might expect.

WATCH: Video shows what Nusa Penida’s treehouse accommodation is like inside

Not everyone agreed it was grim, with many Instagram users calling it a petty complaint and encouraging Daiana to be more understanding of the limitations of a remote accommodation.

“Sorry but there is nothing ugly about it,” one wrote. “Still a vibe,” said another. “They only put that thing to be a photo attraction,” claimed yet another.

“I wouldn’t expect a fridge nor proper heavy bed inside, that tree house is better than a concrete building, just as a nature place should be,” weighed in a further Instagram user.

Despite the claim the house is just a lookout in the Instagram comments section, the treehouse really is an accommodation. There are three of them and they tend to be booked out many months in advance. According to Wandering Wheatleys they cost about $40 a night to book.

That said, a fair few travellers have complained the main thing you are paying for is the view, with one Tripadvisor user similarly pointing out the bare bones aspect of the facilities (and going in even harder).

The Tripadvisor user wrote in December 2019: “First arriving and you realise how you are on the edge of a cliff. You are then told you must walk down very dangerous stairs to get to the tree houses. Once down the area is filled with rubbish and burning plastic, plus the bathroom is shockingly bad also. The ladder to the tree house is used constantly for photos by people who haven’t paid to stay there.”

They continued: “You also have to pay for photos unless you go after the staff leave. Inside is just a mattress on the floor and a fan. We left our bags to go and climb back up the cliff side before it got dark as they have no lights. Once we had eaten and had to use our phone torches to get back to the tree house I saw a few bugs but upon further inspection realised the place was infested and we couldn’t stay the night there.”

RELATED: I Tried Bali’s Instagram Famous Floating Breakfast Experience. It Was A Complete Disaster

“So we had to hike out in the dark with our bags. We informed the owner and he seemed to already be aware of the issue and put us in his uncles room which resembled that of a prison cell. We asked to leave in a taxi as early as we could which he then charged us 350K for but we didn’t really have any other choice. The driver who picked us up was quite possibly the worst driver I have ever been in a car with. I genuinely feared for mine and my friends life as he drove at 90mph on cliff edges whilst almost hitting oncoming traffic.”

“DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Yes the view is nice but there are many other great views around the islands.”

We’d suggest you take the above review with a grain of salt, as they seem unnaturally pissed off, and because it’s a few years old now. Still: food for thought. Or if you want a more balanced take on what it’s like to stay there, check out the following Tripadvisor review from another user.

“Unbelievable view!!! A magical place to watch the sunrise, wake up with that breathtaking view was really special. An unforgettable experience. During your whole stay [though] someone will be at your doorstop taking pictures, even at night or early morning like 6am.”

“In my opinion they should close the access for tourists 5pm an reopen 8am, so the guests who paid for the experience could enjoy the place. The bathroom is shared and outside, you need to use a light to go there because is really dark. One night is enough.”

There you have it. Some words of advice for the next time you stay at one of the world’s coolest, most Instagram famous treehouses.

Succession, the black-comedy drama series, has quickly become one of the most popular shows on television today. If it’s the dysfunctional family dynamics and witty humour you love best about Succession, then Arrested Development is for you. The Emmy-winning series follows Michael Bluth, played by Bateman, who is forced to run the family business (and keep his oddball, formerly wealthy family together) when his father is imprisoned.

Filled with hilarious antics and featuring an extremely solid cast, there’s a reason Arrested Development is considered one of the best sitcoms of all time. Trust us, Succession fans will definitely enjoy this series.

Billions

8.4 IMDb score, stars Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis & Maggies Siff, Drama, released in 2016, 6 seasons

Billions follows the intense cat and mouse game between US Attorney Chuck Rhoades and hedge fund manager Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod. Rhoades constantly tries to prosecute Axe for insider trading, while Axe constantly tries to avoid getting caught. Billions has a few similarities to Succession – both shows are set in New York and focus on affluent characters wanting more wealth.

Billions is well-acted and well-written, just like Succession, too.

Where To Watch: Stan

Empire

When the founder and CEO of a successful record label is diagnosed with a serious medical condition, he must decide which one of his three children is best suited to take over the company when he dies. Sound familiar? Yes, Empire and Succession have very similar plots, although Empire’s a little more melodramatic than Succession.

The gripping plots, exceptional cast and spectacular musical performances are what make Empire a must-watch.

Where To Watch: Disney+

Mad Men

8.7 IMDb score, stars Jon Hamm, January Jones & Elisabeth Moss, Drama, released in 2007, 7 seasons

Set in the 1960s, Mad Men centres around Don Draper, the most talented ad executive at New York’s most prestigious agency. The series is critically acclaimed and won numerous awards during its run, namely because of its stellar cast and well-written plotlines.

If you’re still not sold, Mad Men is a character-driven drama that reflects and examines the social mores of the 1960s; just like Succession (although, obviously the latter show reflects and examines the social mores of today’s society).

Where To Watch: Stan

Yellowstone

Image Credit: Paramount Global Distribution Group

8.7 IMDb score, stars Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley & Kelly Reilly, Drama & Western, released in 2018, 4 seasons

Any fan of Succession is sure to enjoy Yellowstone.

Sydney Airport’s Maxi Taxis Need To Stop Scamming Travellers
Sydney Airport’s Maxi Taxis Need To Stop Scamming Travellers

Travellers have been screwed over by Sydney Airport Maxi Taxis/Cabs various times in recent years, if internet forums (and a recent experience by DMARGE) are anything to go by.

Picture this. You wander out of Sydney Airport Arrivals feeling dishevelled, dirty and in need of an extra strong oat flat white. You roll up to the cab rank wanting a no-fuss trip to the office. After the last 24 hours of armrest fights, outlandishly expensive airport beers and flight delays your reserves of patience are on their last wafer.

You get to the front of the queue and the guy who runs the rank directs you to a Maxi. No biggie: you wander over, safe in the knowledge they can only charge you extra if there are five of you. You sit down, settle in, and then a suspicious feeling comes over you: “I think I’m going to get stitched up here.”

You rock up at your destination and get charged $40 for a trip that – for three people – should have only cost $20; maybe $25 bucks. Ouch.

DMARGE estimation of how much our trip should have cost (not that we’re whinging or anything…)

It’s not just us getting sore about this phenomenon though. A little digging revealed we’re not the only ones who have been ripped off by a Maxi Cab leaving from Sydney Airport. A thread on the Australian Frequent Flyer community from 2019 shows much the same complaint being made.

User ‘luxury-lizard’ writes: “We arrived home from Zurich yesterday evening (6pm) with lots of luggage – 2 large suitcases and a ski-bag – at the taxi queue we requested a station wagon (as we always do). The controller directed us to the separate bays for station wagons and/or maxi taxis. Next up was a maxi taxi – on arrival home we were charged the 50% loading for a mxi taxi (so a $65 fare became $100) – we vigorously complained to the driver but he said this is ‘normal’ – all pickups at the airport from the station wagon/maxi taxi bays are now charged as maxi taxis.”

“Now we have done this literally dozens of times when arriving with large bags (not just a ski bag) and never been charged extra. In fact on our way to the airport some 4 weeks ago we booked a taxi requesting a station wagon – a maxi taxi arrived and we were charged the regular fare.”

Another user ‘kpc’ chimed in, writing: “This exact thing happened to me a couple of years ago at Syd airport…..I refused to pay the maxi taxi rate and just paid the normal rate. It is a scam! I now NEVER catch a taxi in Sydney.”

Over on Reddit a similar complaint was made by user ‘u/AndyM03’. He wrote: “Ended up deciding to catch a taxi home from the international airport terminal because my girlfriend was tired and I didn’t want to waste time figuring out where we were allowed to call an uber. Probably wasn’t that complicated but she had just come back from the UK, so was keen to make things easy as possible.”

“We were directed to a big van cab. Not sure if these guys cost extra, was definitely unnecessary and it was just the two of us and only her luggage. Didn’t pay too much attention to the route he took, but the total was $63 to Newtown (Near Marrickville). It was like, 10 to 15 minutes tops.”

He added: “When we get there, the cabbie informs me the eftpos machine is broken. Of course he didn’t mention this before. So we take our luggage out and luckily the pub is right next door. We drive there together, leaving the girlfriend and he makes a smart ass comment ‘Better say goodbye to her, it’ll be awhile’. So I get him cash. I ask for a receipt and he goes ‘I was doing you a favour, if you want a receipt we need to add GST.’ I think the real total was $63, but I just gave him the $5 I happened to have to get follow up details because I was pretty annoyed.”

Another user, ‘u/angrydave’ chimed in below this story with an enlightening (opinionated) response. He claimed: “Yep, you were ripped off, and this is a common scam.”

‘u/angrydave’ continued with his sweeping, harsh and – in some cases (DMARGE isn’t suggesting every Maxi Cab does this) – probably right analysis: “Maxi-Taxis, the Van ones, attempt to charge the 5+ person rate regardless of how many people are travelling. They should only charge this rate when you actually have a party of 5 or more (not including the driver) travelling.”

“Every time I go there I seem to get directed to one of these, and every time I end up having to ‘Walk away’ back to the dispatcher and ask for a taxi that isn’t charging the Maxi-Taxi rate. He then goes and yells at the driver of the taxi and I end up paying the correct rate and a disgrunted driver for my ride home.”

Reddit user ‘u/angrydave’

“It’s been going on for years, and it seems to not be changing. Complain to Sydney Airport, and to the NSW Transport Minister. Take down Plate Numbers and their Public Transport Driver Licence number (both should be clearly displayed). Only way this will change is if we make the Airport and Transport for NSW aware of it.”

He also said you should only be paying the Maxi fare if you have 5+ Passengers, writing: “If you are a 4 or less passengers (2 in your case) the normal Day or Night rate applies,” and providing a quote from the Taxi website: “

“An amount of up to 150% of the regular taxi fare may be charged where the maxi-cab is hired at a rank or hailed on a street and there are 5 or more passengers.”

There you have it. One allegedly common scam to avoid the next time you’re taking a cab from Sydney airport.

The One Mistake You’re Probably Making With Your Hammer Curls
The One Mistake You’re Probably Making With Your Hammer Curls

Hammer curls are a great arm exercise that can really help to grow the size of your biceps, all thanks to a change in wrist orientation compared to a standard bicep curl. But, good form is vital.

Hammer curls are a bicep exercise that not only targets the head of the bicep (which is also targeted with a conventional bicep curl) but the sides of your biceps too. For the biologists out there, hammer curls specifically target the elbow flexors, which comprise the biceps brachii, brachioradialis, and brachialis, says Healthline.

These muscles are the ones responsible for bringing your hand up to your shoulder, i.e. the ones that help you sling back 20 beers over a weekend.

So, with hammer curls being such an important and beneficial biceps exercise, it’s one you really do want to be included in your workout routine. But, as with pretty much every other exercise on the planet, good form is more important than the amount of weight you lift.

WATCH: Nick Cheadle shows how to perform hammer curls correctly.

What is the correct form for a hammer curl you ask? Nick Cheadle has the answer. Taking to Instagram, Nick highlights a common mistake people will make when performing hammer curls: using their shoulders to provide momentum to help curl the dumbbell.

In fact, with hammers curls, you don’t even need to curl the dumbbell more than 90 degrees. By only curling to 90 degrees, it actually makes the hammer curl harder and more effective in one fell swoop.

How to perform a hammer curl

To perform a hammer curl, take a dumbbell in each hand and hold them in a neutral grip (palms facing inwards) as opposed to a supinated grip (palms facing upwards) that you would use for a standard bicep curl.

Keep your elbows tight against your body and keep them there throughout the duration of the exercise.

Then, simply curl the dumbbells at the same time, up until they reach a 90-degree angle. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

In his video, Nick highlights the difference between how a hammer curl should be performed and how some people may perform it incorrectly.

While he admits that the swinging curls include “the same amount of flexion at the elbow,” by performing the hammer curl correctly “is much more difficult at the top of the rep.” This is because holding the weight in a 90-degree position requires us to engage our biceps a lot more, compared to if we simply swing them up towards our face.

If you are a swinger (not that kind) then you’ll end up engaging your shoulder muscles for half of the movement. This, says Nick, is because “we use our shoulders to push our elbows forward, which takes the tension off the bicep.”

Benefits of 90 degrees

We’ve previously discussed the potential benefits of integrating 90-degree angles in the majority of weightlifting exercises. The insight came from Dr Joel Seedman, who reckons the 90-degree joint angle is a “hidden training secret.”

He added, “When we examine sub-sciences of kinesiology including structural muscle physiology, biomechanics, neuromuscular physiology, physics & more, we see that optimal range of motion for most movements involve 90-degree joint angles.”

“90 degrees maximises muscles activation, strength gains, muscle hypertrophy, joint health & athletic performance, not to mention full-body stability, mobility, symmetry & more.”

In his examples, Dr Seedman applied the 90-degree angle concept to overhead presses but he also highlighted their benefit to bicep curls, too.

So, combine this knowledge with Nick’s perfect demonstration of how a hammer curl should be performed, and you’ll be well on your way to gaining some bigger arms.
