Un-Australian ‘Dog Act’ Sees Ash Barty Dobbed In To Government For Sinking A Beer
Un-Australian ‘Dog Act’ Sees Ash Barty Dobbed In To Government For Sinking A Beer

Tennis champion Ash Barty has been reported to a drinking watchdog after a fan took issue with her celebratory sip of beer during a TV interview following her historic Australian Open victory.

Though most people would have thought she’d earned it, one viewer dobbed it in as a PR stunt to Australia’s advertising watchdog.

Barty’s win at the Australian Open propelled her to national hero status. She is the first Australian woman to win the singles since Chris O’Neil in 1978.

There was a jubilant atmosphere as she was interviewed on live TV, surrounded by happy fans.

As express.co.uk reports: “Channel Nine presenters cracked open a couple of beers to celebrate, and Barty was happy to join in and swig from a bottle of Corona, while Peroni was also spotted on the set.”

“I’m a Corona girl,” she said, as she and the presenters sat down and sipped.

One fan took issue with this, reporting the incident to the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC), expressing concerns it “glorified and glamorised alcohol and was very deceptive if it was indeed a paid promotion.”

“Why else are they doing it if it wasn’t a paid stunt? It’s poor when many children were up watching the final and Ash Barty is a role model for many girls too,” the complainant wrote.

Carlton & United Breweries, which distributes Corona, said there had been no advertising agreement between themselves and the Nine Network.

“Carlton & United Breweries was not aware that our brands Peroni and Corona would be depicted in this or any other post-match interview,” they said.

“We were not contacted by Channel 9 with respect to any reference to our brands.”

Tom Holland Bartended At A London Bar. He Was Quickly Fired
Tom Holland Bartended At A London Bar. He Was Quickly Fired

Tom Holland, the actor best-known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has just debuted as another iconic character. Uncharted, a film based on the popular video games of the same name, opened in cinemas around the world over the weekend and Holland stars as Nathan Drake, the protagonist from the games.

However, it sounds like preparing for the film was no easy feat. First, Holland mistook a gift from his co-star Mark Wahlberg as a sex toy, and then he got fired from a bar in London… Let us explain.

In Uncharted, Drake has some impressive bartending skills, so Holland, eager to nail his role, went to a bartending school and even got a job as a bartender before filming began in 2020. The actor told SiriusXM:

“I went to a bartending school, I ended up doing a few shifts at this bar in London, which was a lot of fun; I just really enjoyed it.”

Of course, Holland had to be a bit secretive about his new barkeep job because he is currently one of the biggest stars on the planet, so he would go into work at the bar covertly.

“I would go in there and take the bartender’s clothes and be in there undercover; it was fun, I enjoyed myself.”

However, Holland’s boss eventually figured out that his new employee was drawing too much attention to the bar and pulled in too many customers, so Holland was swiftly fired.

“As word spread around town and, like, people started figuring out that oh, yeah apparently Tom Holland’s bartending at this bar, then the General Manager starting figuring it out, and then eventually, I sort of got kicked out…”

Holland says he’s been back to the bar since but the relationship between him and his ex-manager is “rocky”. It seems though, that the young actor hopes the manager gets over Holland’s fame and lets him return to work.

“I’ve been giving them a lot of press though so they should just shut up and let me work.”

Holland did announce in December last year that he wanted to take a break from acting, so maybe he’s found his calling in bartending. He did admit, “I like making an espresso martini,” so perhaps, we won’t be seeing Holland as the new James Bond drinking a martini anytime soon; he’ll be behind a bar making the martinis.

A380 Completes ‘Never Seen Before’ Manoeuvre At Heathrow Airport
A380 Completes ‘Never Seen Before’ Manoeuvre At Heathrow Airport

An A380 – one of the largest jets in the sky – has just completed a move that aviation producers say they have “never seen before” while landing during England’s Storm Eunice. The A380, which, according to Airbus, fits 545 passengers in a standard 4-class configuration, appeared to hover midair, while coming in to land at Heathrow.

Speedbird TV filmed the video. They posted it on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, with producers commenting: “Never have I seen that, and I have been live-streaming aviation for 10 years!”

In the video you can see the Qatar Airways A380 hovering and floating as the pilot struggles with strong wind.

It inches closer to the runway but at the last moment, the pilots abort. According to social media users in the comments (and confirmed by Speedbird TV admins), after trying three times they finally succeed in landing.

Fans of the page were duly impressed. One wrote: “Oh my goodness! I’ve never seen anything like that before!!!”

Another wrote: “What a beauty she is.”

Further comments included: “Wow, wouldn’t want to be on that plane,” “some great landings today but nothing comes close to Etihad’s 380 landing in Storm Dennis two years ago” and “bet it was the Shortest runway stop ever when it did land minus any braking.”

“The pilots really earned their pay today…”

In the lead up to storm Eunice, Britain’s weather service warned of wind gusts exceeding 144 kilometres per hour in highly exposed coastal areas (and forecasted strong winds all across the country).

The Met Office has said a 196kph gust was recorded on the Isle of Wight – “provisionally” (per the ABC) the strongest-ever wind recorded in England.

The ABC reports that “at least nine people have died after the second major storm in a week smashed through the UK and northern Europe as high winds felled trees, cancelled flights and train services and ripped sections off the roof of London’s O2 Arena.”

Best Men’s Bedroom Ideas Guaranteed To Impress Your Date
Best Men’s Bedroom Ideas Guaranteed To Impress Your Date

Designing a bedroom? Whether you a minimalist kind of guy, or have a home bursting with character, there are certain essential elements every man’s bedroom should include.

The following guide of bedroom ideas will help you create a bedroom that is not only conducive to sleep and relaxation but may very well improve your love life and will certainly boost the practicality and efficiency of the space.

Show Us Your Chest

modern-masculine-bedroom-paint-ideas-in-plain-concrete-grey-color-scheme-and-floating-tier-bedside-tables

Ah, storage. The scourge of modern living and shrinking homes can affect even the tidiest among us.

A simple solution comes in the sturdy form of a chest or trunk. Placed at the end of your bed with a few pillows, the trunk can double as a bench (or love seat?), while keeping surplus linen and towels – or sex toys and massage oil – out of sight.

You can pick up cheap options from Ikea and the like, but we prefer chests of the antique variety (wouldn’t grandma be pleased!). Add a hint of vintage charm to your bedroom by hitting the antiques stores or weekend markets.

In terms of materials, avoid overly ornate options and stick with wood (cedar is preferable) and metal.

Colour It Right

room

Neutral colours are best in a men’s bedroom as they create a clean, serene atmosphere.

A base palette of black, white and grey are recommended, but at the same time it’s important to balance the demeure scheme with pops of colour. If feature walls seem like too much hard work (or if you rent and aren’t allowed to paint the walls) pick a favourite artwork or decorative item instead.

Choose a shade featured in the artwork or item and use this as your accent colour. Grab a throw rug or a couple of pillowcases in the same colour and watch the room transform into a cohesive little sleeping den.

Tip: Don’t go overboard with your accent colour. One or two items in the desired shade are sufficient.

Bed Rules

laxseries_platform-bed_storage-headboard_011

Keeping it simple is a masculine mantra that should be applied to the bedroom, and particularly to the bed itself. Choose a simple design with clean lines and sharp angles, and NEVER skimp on your mattress.

Always buy the best quality you can afford and save your skimping for other areas of the bedroom (e.g. a secondhand bedframe or hand-made platform bed).

Platform beds are a great option thanks to their minimalist aesthetic, versatility and practicality. With simplicity in spades, there are countless platform varieties to be found.

A Fine Leather Chair

grampians_20recliner_2045r_9efa78d5-1afd-42be-b68f-3ab797e96c22_1024x1024

For those times when you’d rather sit than lie, a sumptuous leather recliner is a must-have.

While the bed is undeniably the most important piece of bedroom furniture, don’t underestimate the amount of relaxation (and action) that can be achieved in a reclining leather cocoon.

Brave The Bedside Table

max-sparrow-kagney-side-table-02

A lot of men – especially men who live in female-free households – tend to overlook the bedside table.

Many have dainty images of ornate designs holding floral-scented hand lotions and well-thumbed romance novels with Fabio flexing on the cover. But side tables are pretty damn handy. Use it to hold a lamp and store sexy goodies, books, medication or your iPhone.

Dressers & Chest Of Drawers

drawers

If you’re not lucky enough to have a bedroom endowed with built-ins, a dresser or chest or drawers is your next best bet. A classic hardwood dresser will never go out of style, and will soften your neutral, minimalist palette.

Lamp Light For Thought

lamp

Industrial lamps are what the cool kids call ‘on-trend’. They have remained timeless, so indulge your grungy side and opt for a design with tons of industrial charm.

Rug Up

rug

Adding warmth and texture to your bedroom is the humble rug.

Animal skin rugs (real or faux depending on your fur stance!) are always chic and masculine. We’re partial to this deerskin beauty that looks amazing under a leather recliner. Remember to position your chosen rug off centre for a contemporary look.

10 Best Sydney Wine Bars
10 Best Sydney Wine Bars

Wine is, without doubt, one of the most popular drinks drunk around the world. With an ungodly number of bottles, wineries and varietals out there waiting to be discovered, you can never say you don’t like wine, you just haven’t found the one you like yet.

So when it comes to finding the best wine bars in Sydney, it’s easier said than done. Wine bars are, quite literally, dedicated to serving some of the very best wines. Not only will these include some of the best Australian reds and Australian whites, but you will likely find a generous selection of international varieties too. Plus, you’ll probably learn a thing or two compared to if you visited a restaurant.

Tapavino

6-8 Bulletin Place, Sydney, 2000

Sydney Wine Bars - Tapavino

For those who can’t tell by the name, Tapavino is all about the love for Spanish flavours with a matching atmosphere to boot. It started life as Australia’s first Sherry Bar located in a small laneway much like those found in Spain. Since then the word has spread and Tapavino has become Sydney’s best wine bars for sampling some of Spain’s finest wine. Tapavino has since opened two more establishments in the CBD but the original one is our recommendation to experience where the magic began.

Fix Wine Bar

111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, 2000

Those who love to walk more on the adventurous side of wine only need to hit up one place, Fix. This wine bar in Sydney focuses on the smaller boutique growers to deliver hand-picked wines of local and global origins. The result? A place that is both refreshing, but still consistent in quality when it comes to the flavour, individuality and personality of the wine list. We guarantee that you’ll find something here unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before.

The Stinking Bishops

5/63-71 Enmore Road, Newtown, 2042

Sydney Wine Bars - The Stinking Bishops

There are few greater pairings on this earth than wine and cheese, and The Stinking Bishops certainly knows it. This wine bar is actually a premier cheese shop first, but backing up the smelly stuff is a pretty serious wine list that earns itself a spot in the best wine bars of Sydney. The appeal here comes from matching the plethora of cheese to an extensive wine list. Again, it’s a small joint so head in as early as possible.

Cittavino

55 Enmore Road, Newtown, 2042

Sydney Wine Bars - Cittavino

Following in similar footsteps to the aforementioned Fix, Cittavino also comes armed with the liquid gold you’re likely not to find anywhere else, with the majority of wine on offer at this wine bar being imported directly from the regions of Spain, Italy and France. Joining this respectable list is a generous selection of wines from America and South Africa, alongside those from small Australian wine producers. Looking one of Sydney’s best wine bars? Look no further.

10 William Street

10 William Street, Paddington, 2021

Sydney Wine Bars - 10 William Street

The 10 William Street wine bar should need no introduction. As part of the Fratelli Paradiso group, the Italian wine establishment has amassed a solid following from across the city. More importantly, the wine list is astounding with a menu spanning four pages, with bottles from Australia, Italy, Spain, USA, France, Germany, Austria and Japan just to name a few. If you can’t find the right tipple for yourself in here then you probably don’t have tastebuds.

Wine Library

18 Oxford Street, Woollahra, 2025

Sydney Wine Bars - Wine Library

The Wine Library, as the name suggests, is to wine what a traditional library is to books. It’s a classic all-rounder wine bar serving up a decent tipple for those in Sydney CBD. It has all the reds and whites along with staff who know their shiraz from their cabernet sauvignon. For the peckish they even have an ever-changing food menu that pairs perfectly with any of the wines on offer.

Love, Tilly Devine

91 Crown Lane, Darlinghurst, 2010

Sydney Wine Bars - Love, Tilly Devine

Follow the rustic sign outside and head past the dimly lit interior seen from the window and you’ll find one of Sydney’s most loveable wine bars. Heck, it even champions it with a name like Love, Tilly Devine. The stylish yet down to Earth vibe makes it one of the best wine bars to catch up with a friend or to take a date but more importantly, their wine is damn good.

The wine list currently sits at around 300 different wines from many of the world’s great regions – everywhere from the Barossa Valley to the Jura to Wachau. And it changes daily. How’s that for service. The bar only fits 40 persons so you better sprint there from work if you plan on scoring yourself a spot.

Dear Sainte Éloise

5/29 Orwell Street, Potts Point, 2011

Sydney Wine Bars - Dear Saint Éloise

A short stroll out of Sydney CBD will bring you to Dear Sainte Éloise in Potts Point. A cosy wine bar with a true neighbourhood feel, you’ll be waited on hand and foot and served a selection of some of the finest wines from around the world, with some delicious food to match. The team at Dear Saint Éloise carefully curate their selection of wine, featuring both the best Australia has to offer alongside some incredible imports from Europe.

bibo Wine Bar

7 Bay Street, Double Bay, 2028

Sydney Wine Bars - bibo

Possibly one of the absolute best wine bars in Sydney is bibo. Most definitely Portuguese in its direction, bibo serves up an unbelievable array of wine with an equally unbelievable menu to match. While the menu aims to show off some of the more unusual varietals to be found in Australia, it also has Europe to thank, and with the menu winning consecutive awards for the past three years, you’ll have yourself to thank for paying it a visit.

Where’s Nick

236 Marrickville Road, Marrickville, 2204

Sydney Wine Bars - Wheres Nick

Widely regarded as another of Sydney City’s best wine bars, Where’s Nick puts a strong focus on sustainability, with the vast majority of its wine selection coming from producers who harvest from organic vineyards. The staff are more than happy to talk to you about its selection too and are some of the most knowledgeable you’ll find in any wine bar in Sydney. Wines rotate regularly, so you’ll always be able to sip on something new with each visit, and Wheres Nick also has a small food menu to accompany your glass.

Looking To Beat The Dow Jones? Invest In Rolex Watches
Looking To Beat The Dow Jones? Invest In Rolex Watches

Even people who aren’t familiar with watches probably know Rolex. It’s the world’s biggest watch brand and one of the most recognisable brands on the planet. It’s a by-word for success, prestige and luxury – which means big dollars.

Speaking of big dollars, people who are familiar with watches have long known that investing in Rolexes is a good move. Demand is so high for the high-end timepieces that virtually every model they sell either resist depreciation or quickly start appreciating as soon as you leave the boutique – with popular vintage models such as the legendary ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona ranking among some of the most sought-after watches on the planet.

But even seasoned watch collectors might be surprised as to how well Rolexes perform as an investment when you actually sit down and crunch the numbers. Thankfully, leading vintage Rolex dealer Bob’s Watches has indeed crunched the numbers for us, and their results are truly astounding.

The gist? Over the last decade, not only have Rolexes outperformed the US property market as well as proven to be a better investment than gold, but they’ve offered better returns than even the bloody Dow Jones.

Image: Bloomberg

“Evaluating percentage increases for gold and real estate, based on inflation-adjusted values for gold from macrotrends.net and median sales price data for houses sold in the U.S. from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) database, Rolex watches significantly outperformed both,” Bob’s Watches’ report relates.

Moreover, “when it came to the Dow Jones Industrial Average… returns were comparable over the decade, but Rolex produced significantly higher appreciation percentages over the past five years.” That means that over the next decade, Rolexes will more than likely eclipse the Dow Jones… That is, they’re a better bet.

“Even compared to traditional investment classes, such as gold, the stock market, and real estate, the 10-year appreciation that can be observed in the average price of pre-owned Rolex watches is still incredibly impressive.”

The report also reveals how the COVID-19 pandemic has supercharged Rolex prices, with Bob’s data revealing that the average price of a used Rolex watch has skyrocketed from less than US$5,000 in 2011 to more than US$13,000 by the end of 2021.

RELATED: What The 2022 Rolex Price Increase Means For Australian Consumers

That alone is an impressive rise, but when you consider that the price growth since the beginning of The Spicy Cough in 2020 is nearly equal to the total price increase over the last five years – and that this trend shows no signs of slowing as we enter 2022 – the business case for investing in Rolexes gets even more compelling.

Image: Bob’s Watches

Unsurprisingly, the in-demand Daytona is the highest appreciating Rolex model. The average price for one of these coveted chronographs has more than tripled in value during the past 10 years, with Bob’s reporting an average pre-owned price of more than US$30,000 for 2021.

Annoyingly, you can’t actually invest directly in Rolex as a company. Like many of the watch world’s biggest players, Rolex is a private company, owned by the charitable Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. We’re sure many investors would love to own a piece of Rolex, but the best you can do is own a Rolex timepiece.

RELATED: ‘Avoid Like The Plague’: Watch Fans Reveal The One Place They Would Never Buy A Rolex

Of course, the other big advantage of investing in Rolex watches is that they’re an investment you can actually enjoy. You can’t wear an ETF or a gold nugget on your wrist, but you can certainly wear a gold Rolex Day-Date ‘President’. Although you’ve got to be careful with Rolex thefts on the rise…

Check out Bob’s Watches Rolex report in full here, and watch our list of the world’s most expensive watches of all time below.

Heartwarming Photo Shows The Australian Travel Industry Is Back, Baby
Heartwarming Photo Shows The Australian Travel Industry Is Back, Baby

Sydney airport is looking busy again. A photo of this rare (in recent years) sight was posted to Twitter on Friday morning by radio news and current affairs journalist Isobel Roe. She captioned the photo: “Enormous queues at Sydney Qantas domestic terminal this morning.”

The heartwarming image of a bustling airport is all the more moving in comparison with some of the ghost like scenes on offer at the start of this month (although, to be fair, those ghost like scenes were in the international airport, and Roe’s heartwarming photo appears to have been taken in the domestic terminal).

Roe’s photo received such comments as: “Is that people arriving or is that everyone leaving Sydney?” as well as “People are scared of Russian invasion – trying to escape maybe.”

Another wrote: “These pics make me love my Newcastle airport even more.”

On second thoughts, maybe it’s just us who find it heartwarming…

Fortunately, we are not entirely alone in our sentiment, with two further comments in the thread reading: “Oh yeah! It’s a gem” and “wow,” respectively.

According to The Economist, as we come out of COVID, travel is going to get easier, but restrictions will probably remain, and cross (international) border travel will likely not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

The Australian Financial Review likewise reports that the reopening of Australia’s borders on February 21 (in just a couple of days time!) “will not result in a flood of international tourists, but will be a slow rebuild that will take years, according to the industry.”

El Camino picks up right where Emmy-award-winning series, Breaking Bad left off, so if you haven’t watched Breaking Bad you may not fully appreciate El Camino but you will still enjoy it. The film follows Jesse Pinkman, fresh from his escape from the Aryan Brotherhood gang, as he runs from a massive police manhunt.

Engaging and extremely well-acted, especially by Paul, El Camino’s a great crime thriller to add to your watch list.

Dark and tense, Prisoners is a great thriller well worth your time.

Scarface

8.3 IMDb score, stars Al Pacino & Michelle Pfeiffer, Thriller, Crime & Drama, released in 1983

Scarface follows Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who quickly becomes the biggest drug lord in Miami. Pacino’s performance as Montana is flawless and the film has a great storyline.

Uncut Gems

7.4 IMDb score, stars Adam Sandler, Julia Fox & Idina Menzel, Thriller, Crime & Drama, released in 2019

A charismatic New York jeweller who’s in deep gambling debt must retrieve a rare uncut gem to pay off all the money he owes. Uncut Gems is exhilarating from start to finish and is one of those thrillers where you actually feel stressed (in a good way) while watching.

Plus, Sandler’s performance is mind-blowingly good; he should do serious roles way more often.
