What Happens When Regular People Copy Sports Stars’ Workouts?
What Happens When Regular People Copy Sports Stars’ Workouts?

Many of us will get our workout inspiration from online sources, which can cause problems if the source isn’t fully accredited. But what happens if we want to imitate our favourite sports stars? Is it wise to copy their workouts or should we leave it to the professionals?

We document a high number of sports star and celebrity workouts here at DMARGE. Just take Chris Hemsworth, Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and James Milner as examples. In these pieces, we break down the various exercises they’re performing and provide simple instructions explaining how to do them yourself (we also make sure to provide some warnings and other information to indicate you should always consult with a health or fitness professional before attempting either a new exercise or before you want to increase the weight).

But what could happen if you simply went out and copied your favourite celebrities’ vain Instagram workouts with no instruction? We did a little digging to find out.

The first thing to remember, before mimicking your favourite celebrity’s workout, is that heavy weight doesn’t necessarily equal greater gains. You can still get strong lifting lighter weights (and even in as little as 3 seconds). So, when you see Sergio Ramos performing Romanian deadlifts like it’s nothing or James Milner completing what appears to be a simple leg strengthening workout, but in reality would be far from it, it’s wise to think twice before racing to the gym to try it for yourself.

And, it should be said, athletes don’t always get it right. Formula 1 hotshot Max Verstappen shared a workout at the beginning of 2022 (which you can watch below), but as we pointed out at the time, it was one you should avoid mimicking because his form was incredibly poor.

WATCH: Max Verstappen’s Workout That Is Best Avoided

DMARGE spoke to former NRL player and owner of Flow Athletic, Ben Lucas at the time to get his thoughts on Max’s workout. While he said “the exercises are fine,” he added “they need to be done better to not only ensure that Max gets results, but they keep him injury free.”

The overarching question, then, is should we mimic these workouts or just use them for inspiration?

DMARGE recently spoke to former NRL great Anthony Minichiello to hear his thoughts around athletes’ off-season workouts, which tend to be the ones they share on social media. We wanted to find out if these workouts are ‘safe,’ since they’re usually performed without the guidance of a coach.

Mini told us, “in my experience professional athletes these days are well versed in strength and conditioning and fitness regimes, as they do this for a living every day, so high-performance comes natural.”

“I don’t think it’s a disaster waiting to happen to be honest during the off-season, you might do some workouts by yourself in a gym or with a PT, but you never train as hard as when you’re preparing for something. It’s always a light session to tick the body over and keep your general fitness up, before you go back into harder training with pre-season starts.”

Of course, a ‘light workout’ for an athlete could be more intense for the Average Joe, but in general, the exercises they perform are likely to be more akin to what is feasible for us to perform in the gym too. They’re not going to be as sport-specific as their pre-season training, but as Mini says, are just there to “tick the body over.”

The takeaway? It can be perfectly fine to use athlete workouts as inspiration for your own. We’d argue they’re going to be a far more credible source on the whole (not you, Max, sorry) and so can be more educational than some random ripped dude on Instagram who shares his “top 5 exercises to lose fat.” This is mainly because, as Adam Sullivan of Evidence Based Training has previously said, “no exercise directly results in fat loss,” but it can when combined with a calorie deficit.

As with any information you find online, if you’re unsure as to its credibility, then run it past one of the trainers at your gym or another qualified health professional.

Snowflakes: Stop Complaining About The Childbirth Scene From ‘House Of The Dragon’
Snowflakes: Stop Complaining About The Childbirth Scene From ‘House Of The Dragon’

House of the Dragon‘s first episode featured a pretty graphic childbirth scene; which was instantly criticised online. Many are now calling for the show to add a trigger warning or to remove the scene completely from the episode but that’s ridiculous… Spoiler alert: the following article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon.

With just one episode, House of the Dragon made some serious noise. 9.986 million viewers watched the first episode on the night it was released (the 21st of August) and now, a week later, it’s been watched by over 20 million viewers. Plus, HBO announced shortly after the episode’s release, that the Game of Thrones prequel series would get a second season.

The internet exploded and many quickly shared (myself included) that the inaugural episode of House of the Dragon was just as good as peak Game of Thrones. Many also shared their thoughts on the now infamous birthing scene.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch House of the Dragon’s first episode yet, King Viserys – who is desperate for his pregnant wife, Queen Aemma, to give birth to a son; an heir – is advised by The Grand Maester that because the baby is in breach it’s likely that both Aemma and the child will die.

Viserys is then told that there is a way to save the child; however, this method would definitely kill Aemma. Viserys selfishly chooses this option and we see a terrified, unconsenting Aemma subjected to a graphic and brutal caesarean.

The scene quickly garnered backlash online. Many argued it was gratuitous; it was not necessary for the plot to move forward and was just another senseless scene glorifying violence against women.

The BBC reported that House of the Dragon should have included a ‘trigger warning’ before the episode; Jen Coates, the director of bereavement support charity Sands, shared her belief that the childbirth scene was “fairly traumatic” and a trigger warning should’ve definitely been added.

“That way, people can be better equipped with the knowledge and make an informed decision to watch or skip particular scenes or episodes.”

Many believe the childbirth scene from House of the Dragon was unnecessary… Image Credit: HBO

Some have even argued online that the childbirth scene should be removed completely from the episode. But House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik has defended the scene and told Insider that he asked for feedback from multiple women before the episode aired and believed the scene was highlighting an important – and topical, following the overturning of Roe vs Wade – issue: women should have a choice when it comes to their bodies.

“We did make a point of showing it to as many women as possible and asked the very question, ‘Was this too violent for you?’ And unanimously, the response was ‘no.’ Often the response was, ‘If anything, it needs to be more.’”

Miguel Sapochnik

“We shouldn’t be shying away from this thing that’s happened because it’s raising a point that seems to hit a real trigger for women, which is this idea of choice. She doesn’t get to choose. She’s effectively murdered by her husband. And that is a good indication of the state of play in this world that we’re inhabiting.”

I have to agree; yes the scene was hard to watch but women are so often shown to have easy, peaceful births when that’s not the case at all. And when watching the scene, I was utterly disgusted that Viserys subjected his wife to a caesarian and that poor Aemma had absolutely no autonomy over her own body; so disgusted in fact, that the scene furthered my firm belief that this kind of control over women is wrong and society really needs to do better when it comes to women’s rights.

Plus, I knew what I was getting into when I first sat down to watch House of the Dragon. Its predecessor, Game of Thrones was filled with graphic violence from the get-go, and as House of the Dragon is a prequel, I knew it’d most likely be just as explicit. Plus, the show is rated MA-15+ for violence…

However, I can appreciate that for some, especially pregnant women, perhaps the scene was too much and that’s where a trigger warning would be helpful. But for those arguing the scene was unnecessary and needs to be removed, I disagree. The scene was poignant and provided an interesting social commentary that women’s rights really haven’t come that far since the Middle Ages.

If the scene did bother you though, that’s your opinion and I respect it. But don’t argue that House of the Dragon should be altered or edited so that the violence is toned down; because many enjoy those elements. Instead, just don’t watch the show; no one’s forcing you to…

Spirit Airlines Passenger Goes Nuclear After Baggage Dispute
Spirit Airlines Passenger Goes Nuclear After Baggage Dispute

A Spirit Airlines passenger has snapped their skateboard in half at the check-in desk/boarding gate, after being told they can’t bring it on board for free.

Skateboarder Shaun Hover has got around Spirit Airlines’ stringent baggage rules by snapping his skateboard in half. Arriving at the check-in desk (or the boarding gate, it’s hard to tell), he was told he must pay $89 extra to bring his board (not due to weight but because it did not fit in the box). Rather than leave it behind or pay the extra fee, however, he decided to stomp on his board and take it on for free (in two separate pieces).

Shaun took a video of the experience and posted it on Instagram. At the end of the video he said another flight attendant who “saw what they made you do” gave him some free snacks because they felt bad for him. A few days later, Hover posted a follow-up video showing him skating after exiting the flight, with the board masking taped back together.

Many other skateboarders, who claim the same thing has happened to them, chimed in with sympathy. Tony Hawk, the most famous skateboarder of all time, said he had a similar experience in Heathrow, but that he didn’t get away with it.

WATCH: Spirit Airlines Passenger Snaps Their Skateboard In Half

“Haha I did the same at London Heathrow because they wanted me to check it in,” Birdman wrote. “But mine went in the trash because they wouldn’t let me take the two pieces as carryons.” Another pro skateboarder, Micky Papa simply said: “Hhahahaha I love you Shaun, you’re the best.” Other impressed commenters wrote: things like “BEAST” and “literally dying.”

“Spirit Airlines is the worst airline I’ve ever flew with. Sooooo bad.”

Another skateboarder, Jon Depoian, said: “I almost did that one time too and they had a change of heart. Would be fun to take off the deck and walk around the airport to see if any kids want it.”

Instagram user @rlivacz wrote: “’That was unnecessary sir’ like as if it was necessary to charge someone $89 for something that fits in the overhead bins just fine.”

All very good points indeed. All we can say is at least he is taking it onto the plane as carry on – with all the flight delays and lost baggage of late all around the world, it’s probably a good move.

Who is Cameron Smith?

Cameron Smith is an Australian golfer who was born on the 18th of August 1993 in Brisbane, Queensland to parents Sharon and Des Smith. His father can be credited with helping Cameron generate a passion for golf, as he was a scratch golfer (a golfer with a zero handicap) who played at the Wantima Golf Club in Brisbane. Grant Field, one of the leading golf coaches in Australia, took Cameron Smith under his wing in 2004.

Golf Digest says Des knew his son “could make a career out of golf when Cameron, at 12, broke par and beat his dad for the first time in the same round (69 to his dad’s 71).”

Despite moving to live in Florida, Cameron Smith stays true to his Australian roots by rocking a mullet hairstyle, which he has sported since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Golf Career

Amateur

Just five years later, in 2009, Cameron Smith won the Handa Junior Masters (a now-defunct junior golf tournament in Australia) and in 2011, he added another 3 junior titles to his ever-growing lists, with wins in The Australian Boys’ Amateur, the Australian Amateur Stroke Play and the Victorian Junior Masters.

Professional

Cameron Smith officially turned professional in 2013 and played on the PGA Tour of Australasia and managed to secure a second-place finish at both the 2015 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship and the 2016 Emirates Australian Open.

Cameron Smith moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2014, where he still lives today, in order to play on the PGA Tour. His first event on the PGA Tour was CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, wherein he tied for 5th place.

Smith continued to impress on the world’s golfing stage, with a top four finish at the 2015 U.S. Open, which meant he automatically qualified for the 2016 Masters.

Cameron Smith recorded his first PGA Tour win in 2017, when he partnered with Jonas Blixt (the housemate of Smith’s caddie Sam Pinfold) and won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He followed up this win with two top-10 finishes to see out the 2017 season. Smith then won the Australian PGA Championship in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

It wasn’t until 2020 that Cameron Smith recorded his first individual PGA Tour victory, with a win in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Smith finished joint runner-up at the 2020 Masters, and at the same time, became the first golfer in Masters history to record all four rounds in the 60s, with scorecards of 67-68-69-69.

Smith won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans once more in 2021, but this time was partnered with fellow Australian golfer, Marc Leishman.

Cameron got off to a winning start in 2022 with victory in the calendar-opening tournament, Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Hawaii. Smith set a new record of finishing 34 under par (the previous record was 31 under par, set by Ernie Els at the same tournament in 2003).

He has since followed up this victory with another win in The Players Championship, winning by one shot from Anirban Lahiri, and a third-place finish at the 2022 Masters.

The Open

Cameron Smith won The Open – which is celebrating its 150th anniversary – at St Andrews Old Course, considered to be the oldest golf course in the world, in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland.

Smith won by finishing 20 under par, one stroke less than American golfer, Cameron Young. Cameron Smith’s 20-under-par is also the Open championship lowest score, beating the record set by Tiger Woods, of 19-under-par, in 2000.

LIV Golf

After much speculation, Cameron Smith has now confirmed he will be joining the LIV Golf league. As per Fox Sports, Cameron Smith announced his decision to defect from the US PGA Tour on Tuesday 30th August, claiming the money on offer was a “factor,” but not the “biggest reason.” Cameron Smith signed a contract worth AU$140 million to join LIV Golf.

Smith added his main reason for joining the Saudi-backed golf league was, “[LIV’s] schedule is really appealing. I’ll be able to spend more time at home in Australia and maybe have an event down there, as well. I haven’t been able to do that, and to get that part of my life back was really appealing.”

Cameron Smith Girlfriend

Cameron Smith is currently dating Shanel Naoum, who he met in his current residence of Jacksonville, Florida. The couple would have met sometime since May 2021 and were first photographed together when Cameron won The Players Championship in 2022.

Before Shanel, Cameron was dating Jordan Ontiveros. The pair met in 2016, a couple of years after Smith made the move to Florida. Ontiveros is also a keen golfer and the pair were often seen practicing together.

Cameron Smith Net Worth

Cameron Smith’s net worth is currently estimated at US $6 million, but this will now increase following his win at The Open.

How much did Cameron Smith win at The Open?

As the winner of The British Open, Cameron Smith won US$2.5 million/AU$3,681,525.00 (conversion correct at the time of publishing).

Cameron Smith’s official prize money winnings to date stands at US$24,731,271/AU$36,413,705.14

Where does Cameron Smith live?

Cameron Smith currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida. As per Fox Sports, he owns a “waterside home with three cars, two boats and a mower for his yard work.” He also reportedly owns another two cars which are still in Australia.

Smith also has a passion for fishing, and he has told Fox Sports, “I feel like fishing and driving for me is the place where I can just get away, put the phone down and just enjoy peace.”

This New Show Is Like ‘Entourage’ Meets ‘How To Make It In America’
This New Show Is Like ‘Entourage’ Meets ‘How To Make It In America’

Mo, a brand new Netflix series, is a must-watch and is reminiscent of both Entourage and How To Make It In America

Sick of watching the same five shows on rotation but feel like it’s too overwhelming to go searching for something new? Allow us to get you out of your rut.

Of course, the biggest risk of starting a new show is that it’s not good and has, therefore, wasted your time. But Mo, a new Netflix Original series, is definitely good and will definitely not waste your time.

The series follows Mo Najjar, played by comedian Mohammed Amer, as he struggles with being a Palestinian refugee waiting to be granted asylum as well as being caught between two different cultures.

Mo is the same kind of comedy-drama – that features witty quips and dark humour as well as some sombre and poignant moments – as both Entourage and How To Make It In America; so if you enjoyed either one of those shows (or both) you’ll love Mo.

WATCH: The official trailer for ‘Mo’…

Like Entourage, Mo has a real focus on ‘hustle culture’ and follows an ambition-driven character. And like How To Make It In America, Mo gives viewers an insight into what American life is like, especially what it’s like trying to ‘make it’ in America, albeit a slightly more realistic and topical version than the former show.

Of course, Mo also has points of difference from those two shows. For example, the main characters of Entourage or How To Make It In America aren’t likeable characters so it’s hard to route for them at times, but Mo’s titular character is extremely sympathetic and endearing.

Plus, both Entourage and How To Make It In America obviously are led by privileged white men whereas Mo follows a disadvantaged Palestinian refugee who is just trying to make ends meet.

Mo is also incredibly refreshing compared to other television shows as it amplifies Muslim and Arab voices and experiences, that are rarely explored onscreen, in a positive, grounded and modern way.

If you’re looking for a new show that’s oh so binge-able we can’t recommend Mo enough; it’s funny but still has substance. You can watch Mo now on Netflix.

Harry Garside’s Latest Workout Is A Masterclass In Core Strength
Harry Garside’s Latest Workout Is A Masterclass In Core Strength

Harry Garside is no stranger to extreme workouts, but his latest is one that will seriously destroy your core.

Fresh from completing a challenge that saw him not breathe through his mouth for 24 hours, Australian boxer Harry Garside is back with another extreme fitness test. But, while it certainly still challenges his cardiovascular system, similar to his previous challenge, it more so serves to improve his core strength.

Taking to his Instagram Stories to show off his workout, Harry Garside can be seen in what appears to be a home garage gym completing a series of core exercises that would have us begging for mercy were we to try them ourselves.

WATCH: Harry Garside’s Extreme Core Workout

Medicine ball wall throws

Harry starts with some medicine ball wall throws (a favourite exercise of Chris Hesmworth) followed by a couple of quick jabs with his fists and then switches things up by working on some quick footwork before throwing the medicine ball at the wall once again.

Medicine wall workouts, such as Harry’s, help to target virtually every muscle in your body, according to Healthline. In Harry’s particular case, he will be primarily targeting his obliques (due to the rotation of his torso) and his shoulders (based on the way he holds the ball before throwing it at the wall).

What is also apparent from Harry’s videos, is how intense the exercise is. He grunts consistently during the exercise, indicating it’s no walk in the park. Indeed, medicine ball workouts also increase your heart rate, owing to the fact they can be performed quickly and require you to exert great amounts of strength. This in turn can help to improve cardiovascular fitness and overall endurance.

Handy when you’re a boxer who needs to be prepared to fight for 12 rounds.

Gym ball torso rotation

Following his medicine ball wall throws, Harry moves on to some more core crushing exercises. The first is a gym ball torso rotation. This sees him laying on a gym ball whilst holding a dumbbell up above him, and completing rotations to either side whilst keeping the dumbbell held out straight.

By using a gym ball, Harry needs to recruit his core muscles and his glutes, to help keep him stable on the unstable surface. The addition of the dumbbell creates even more instability when he rotates to the side. It’s not clear exactly what weight of dumbbell Harry is holding, but judging by the size (and his grunts) we’d say it’s at least 10kg, if not more.

If you want to try this exercise for yourself, then start without a weight and rotate in the same manner, with your hands held together out in front of you.

American kettlebell swings with rotation

Finally, Harry performs some American kettlebell swings, but adds in a rotation at the hips. The American kettlebell swing is an extension of the classic kettlebell swing (also known as a Russian kettlebell swing). Where the latter finishes with the kettlebell around hip height, the American version sees you continuing to swing until the kettlebell finishes above your head.

Some people in the fitness industry see it as a redundant move and one that has potential to cause more harm than good (see here), but some others still see it as a beneficial move that is better for improving endurance, rather than strength.

BarBend says of the American kettlebell swing, “lifters need to have enough shoulder mobility and scapular stabilisation to be in the overhead swing position.”

“American swings can sometimes lead to compensation patterns when a lifter lacks overhead mobility and stability are present. This means the lifter may rely on other muscles — muscles that aren’t meant to be engaged — to pick up the slack during American swings.”

If you do want to try an American swing, do so with a light kettlebell and only if you have good shoulder mobility. You also need to ensure you perform it correctly to avoid injury.

In Harry’s case, he does appear to be using a lightweight kettlebell, and he recruits his core muscles and the momentum from the rotation to facilitate the swinging motion, as opposed to using his shoulders. He does, however, appear to move his head and neck forward at the top of each swing, something Barbend says should be avoided.

This particular exercise is a good example of how it might not always be a good idea to mimic athletes’ workouts. You can still perform kettlebell swings with a rotation, but have the kettlebell finish around mid-torso height. This not only is a safer movement to perform, but can help improve explosive strength, too.

All in all, it’s an incredibly intense workout that certainly has its merits with regard to increasing your core strength. Just remember, Harry is a trained professional athlete, so if you want to try it for yourself, go easy on the weight and make sure to nail the technique.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk: Will It Happen & How Much Will The Prize Money Be?
Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk: Will It Happen & How Much Will The Prize Money Be?

British boxer and two-time world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said he was retiring from boxing following his fight again Dillian Whyte on 23rd of April 2022. But, Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk has since challenged Fury. Will Tyson Fury come out of retirement? The answer is, potentially, yes.

Tyson Fury has consistently proven he is one of the best boxers to have ever stepped into a boxing ring, and was even ranked as the best active heavyweight boxer by ESPN in August 2022. But, following his much-anticipated fight against Dillian Whyte, which he won by technical knockout, Fury announced his retirement.

Since then, Oleksandr Usyk (who The Ring deem to be the best active heavyweight boxer as of August 2022) has stepped into the ring to fight Anthony Joshua with four heavyweight championship belts on the line. Usyk won the mot recent fight between the pair by split decision (marking the second time he defeated Joshua) and immediately following the match, called out Tyson Fury. Usyk said he “is not fighting at all,” again, unless the fight is against Tyson Fury.

Tyson Fury did respond to Usyk’s demands, but had some demands of his own. He said he would fight the Ukrainian, but only for $500 million. He also said promoters have until the 1st of September to arrange it all, otherwise the offer is off the table.

Fury vs Usyk: How much will the prize purse be?

Speaking to TalkSport radio, Fury said “I’ve made it quite clear that I’m retired from boxing, and I’m very happy doing that. However, I would come back, but it would have to be for an obscene amount of money.”

Image: @tysonfury

“Because let’s face it, it’s not Anthony Joshua, who I would fight for free in the UK. If they want me to fight this unknown quantity and give him an opportunity of legendary status in trying to beat me, then they’ve gotta pay for that.”

“They’ve got a week. It’s August 24th today. This fight is purely about money. I’m happily retired. I don’t need money, I’ve got plenty of money.”

One of TalkSport’s hosts asked “Well if it’s not about money, then why does it need to be about money?”

Tyson said, “Because if they want the big Gypsy King to fight, they’ve got to pay an obscene amount of money. It’s the biggest fight in the world, so it needs to be the biggest payday in the world.”

“Mayweather got $400m for [Manny] Pacquio. I want $500m for Usyk.”

Fury vs Usyk: When will it take place?

If boxing promoters are happy to meet Tyson Fury’s demands and stump up $500m cash, then the fight will need to happen before the end of 2022, according to Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren.

Speaking to SecondsOut after Tyson made his demands on TalkSport, Frank said “this fight needs to happen this year.”

Fury vs Usyk: Where will it be held?

Frank Warren also said the Fury vs Usyk fight (if it happens) can’t take place in the UK. He said “Cardiff just isn’t big enough and we can’t generate the income down there that you can generate at Wembley, which is the natural home for it.”

Usyk landing a right-hander on Anthony Joshua. Image: @usykaa

“So we’ve got to look abroad. The places where it would work would be the Middle East and a couple of other places that we’ve had some loose discussions with. [Both fighters] are undefeated and there’s four belts on the line, it will be something special. It’s boxing’s World Cup final.”

Fury vs Usyk: What belts will be on the line?

According to Sporting News, Oleksandr Usyk currently holds the main five heavyweight championship belts: WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO, which he won off of Anthony Joshua after Usyk beat him in London in September 2021.

Usyk then also won The Ring heavyweight title – which was formally Tyson Fury’s – after Usyk beat Anthony Joshua again. Tyson Fury effectively gave up The Ring belt when he announced his retirement.

Fury has, however, reportedly told the WBC (World Boxing Council) in writing that he would compete for the title again.

Fury vs Usyk: Will it happen?

Frank also said that ultimately, the Fury vs Usyk fight will only happen if a venue and a host nation is willing to stump up the cash. He added that both Fury and Usyk are more than willing for it to happen, since Usyk called out Fury specifically and Fury responded with his sky high financial demands.

All that’s left is for a venue to be decided.

‘Most Expensive Baseball Card In History’ Sells For $18 Million
‘Most Expensive Baseball Card In History’ Sells For $18 Million

A Mickey Mantle baseball card has sold for AU$18.3 million – setting a new record for the most valuable sports collectible in the world.

If you used to collect baseball cards when you were a kid, you may be sitting on an untapped gold mine. A 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card has just sold for US$12.6 million (which is roughly $18.3 million in Australian dollars), according to CNN.

The baseball card sold at auction over the weekend and is now the most valuable sports collectible in the world. The previous record for the most valuable baseball card was a rare Honus Wagner, which sold for US$6.6 million last year – almost half of what this Mickey Mantle went for.

And the previous record for any item of sports memorabilia was Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey; which was sold for US$9.3 million earlier this year.

This rare Honus Wagner previously held the record for most valuable baseball card. Image Credit: Robert Edward Auctions

This record-breaking card is from Mantle’s rookie season and was produced by the collectable company Topps. And yes, the card is relatively rare but the reason the card went for over $12 million is likely because it was extremely well-preserved.

The card was graded “Mint+ 9.5” by the Sportscard Guaranty Corporation and Anthony Giordano who bought it in 1991 for US$50,000 has looked after it for the last thirty years. Although, Giordano admitted he believes the card’s current condition is a “miracle”.

“It bears the finest qualities any 1952 Topps can possess: perfect centering, registration and four sharp corners. That this Mantle rookie card remained in this condition for 70 years is a true miracle.”

Anthony Giordano

So, if you did collect baseball cards back in the day, call your mum and pray that she not only kept them but also protected them over the years… They just might be your ticket to earning eight figures.

Tackle On Richarlison: ‘Everything That’s Wrong With English Football’
Tackle On Richarlison: ‘Everything That’s Wrong With English Football’

Tottenham number 9 Richarlison got scythed down over the weekend while showboating against Nottingham Forest. Many thought he got what he deserved. Others say English football fans (and players) don’t understand the joy in football, and need to learn to appreciate it.

With Tottenham 2-0 up late in Sunday evening’s game against Nottingham Forest (in Nottingham), Richarlison began to juggle the ball on the left wing. This enraged the home crowd.

“I wouldn’t want my players to do that, what Richarlison did,” the Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper said of the incident. “If that is accepted at Spurs that is nothing to do with me, but it wouldn’t be accepted here.”

Pundit Jamie Carragher ripped into Richarlison too, calling his behaviour disrespectful. Hundreds of social media users shared their rage (and vindication) too, with the overriding sentiment being that he got what he deserved when he was fouled after the juggling incident. OddsBible, for their part, called it “the ultimate disrespect.”

There is another way to look at it though; English fans need to get a bit of Brazilian culture into them (and realise that there can be more to football than a dour, efficient game). Of course, we’re not saying there wasn’t an element of winding the other team up (or showing off) behind Richarlison’s antics, but perhaps we should learn to embrace the sh*thousery a little more.

One football fan wrote: “Everything that’s wrong with English football,” adding, “it’s not ‘disrespectful’ to perform a skill.” Another opined: “English football lacks… style so any sort of joy or ‘skill’ is wrong hence players like Saint-Maximin don’t get rated.”

Another few Twitter users spoke of Richarlison’s growing reputation as a cult favourite. Trevor Lloyd, said: “Richarlison is definitely one of those players you hate when he doesn’t play for you. But you absolutely adore him when he does.”

Another said: “Everton fans couldn’t of been more right, you can’t help but love everything about Richarlison when he’s one of you.”

“Guy is a club legend wherever he shows up.”

Other Twitter users even accused pundit Carragher of being more upset over this than Luiz Suarez’s verbal abuse of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra (a controversial incident from way back).

In the end though, the point many people kept coming back to, is the question of why English fans get so incensed by this behaviour. As one fan put it: “If you liked Ronaldinho then you shouldn’t criticize this. Stop making the players be robots and boring. This is fun. Joga bonito.”

Love him or hate him, Richarlison is certainly making a splash. Stay tuned for Tottenham and Nottingham Forest’s next clash on the 8th of November. It’s sure to be spicy…
