Iconic Mykonos Photo Reveals The Basic European Freedom Tourists Can’t Handle
Iconic Mykonos Photo Reveals The Basic European Freedom Tourists Can’t Handle

Forget calling flip flops ‘thongs’; being mortified by topless sunbathing is the biggest give-away you are an Australian on a European beach.Even as body-positivity sweeps Australia and America, when you compare us to Greece, France, and much of Europe, we are very uncomfortable in our own skin. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that we are brought up to be mortified by nudity. The second reason is that we have been pepper-sprayed with beauty standards that are only possible to reach within a narrow age (and size) range.

But this can – apparently – be overcome once you realise no one cares what you look like as much as you do.As Liv Hambrett, European correspondent for the Daily Life wrote on this topic: “I don’t know where the UK and thus Australia and the USA peeled off from Europe in its attitude toward the human bodies, although I can hazard an uneducated guess (church, prudish royals etcetera.) I do know religion doesn’t stop the Germans getting their kit off, or not caring a jot about being naked, and that how a country deals with the human body is ingrained in their greater socio-cultural relationship with sex (and that’s one of the most flawed, damaged relationships we have).”

“And I do know Australians could borrow a little of the European attitude to bodies; it’s just a body.”

It’s also worth pointing out this is clearly not the case in all of Europe. In fact, in France – one of the most well-known countries for its liberal beach attitudes – The Guardian reports topless sunbathing is on the decline.

That said – some tourists – Liv Hambrett, writing for Daily Life among them – have had their eyes opened to this different way of thinking.

“I flipped over and offered my very nude body to the sky… Nothing happened. There wasn’t a clap of shame-thunder [and] the water didn’t reel back in horror and then rush to cover me up.”

“No one pointed, no one looked meaningfully at my ‘problem areas’, no one made any comments about bikini bodies or being bikini ready. Actually, no one even glanced my way. The old nude French man was far too busy loving life with his old nude wife, the merrily naked gay couple behind me were trying to find stones big enough to weigh down their towels and those who strolled by on occasion simply kept strolling by,” (Daily Life).Whether it’s Mykonos, The French Riviera, Capri or San Sebastian, experiences like these are seeing some Australian tourists start hitching their swimmers to the nudism bandwagon. As Nine Honey reported in 2018, nudism is now (slowly) growing in Australia. Just this week news broke a petition was circling for a new nudist beach in Sydney (presumably not just because of lockdown inspired madness). And – as we reported in 2019 – there are various other basic freedoms Europeans are afforded that we are missing out on too.

Of course, you should feel no pressure to get nude, drink 11am beers, embrace ‘hazard flight parking’, cycle without a helmet or start taking your coffee with long-life milk. The point is; it’s great to feel free to do so.With Australia’s borders rumoured to open (so some countries) as early as November/December, the time to get over your Hollywood brainwashing could be now…

Australian Rugby Legend Reveals How You Can Improve Your Mental Health With Your Diet
Australian Rugby Legend Reveals How You Can Improve Your Mental Health With Your Diet

Many people diet to lose weight. What not everyone realises though, is that there’s an even more important reason to eat well: your mental health. This is something Anthony Minichiello, rugby league legend, speaker at the 2019 National FearLess PTSD Conference and Mentor Speaker for Zenergy Group, aims to change. In an exclusive interview with D’Marge, Anthony opened up about everything from injuries to mindset – as well as how to deal with those pesky breadbasket (and dessert) cravings when you’re out and about. Here’s what he had to say.

On improving your mental health through your diet.

Although it was physical injuries that got him to try it (“I was cut down with my first major injury with my spine in 2006 and again in 2007, then again in 2008… Then in 2009 a major leg injury”), Anthony told us that once he reconnected with whole, fresh, nutrient-rich foods, not only did his mood start to change but he also “started sleeping better, recovering quicker [and] was able to push the body a bit more to rebuild.”

On how improving your diet can change your mindset.

“When you eat an anti-inflammatory diet the body isn’t trying to get rid of toxins all the time,” Anthony told us, “so you have much more stable energy throughout the day; no afternoon crashes [and] a much deeper sleep so the body can repair itself.”

“That means a much clearer head to make better choices in your life.”

On barriers to making these changes.

“There’s too much confusing information around what we should eat,” Anthony said, as well as “old science stating that fats are bad.” According to him, “We should be tipping the food pyramid upside down.”As for implementing this? Anthony recommends four simple steps.

  1. Know the source of your food
  2. Know the process of your food
  3. Decrease processed foods and [bad] oils
  4. Intermittently fast

RELATED: The Keto Diet: The Truth About How It Will Impact Your Health“We all know the saying you are what you eat,” Anthony added. “I take that a step further and say, ‘You are what your food eats.’ So getting the best possible produce is important for short and long term health.”

On setbacks.

“I don’t think of them as setbacks; you cant be 100% all the time. There is always a time when you’re out at a dinner or function (or travelling) where you don’t eat so well. But I’m meticulous with my nutrition at home and at work.”

On breadbaskets.

“I know my foundation is strong, so when I’m out, when I feel like a desert – or some bread – I go for it. Life is about enjoyment. But I know too much of the processed foods will start to build unwanted inflammation in the body and… chronic inflammation causes chronic decease later in life.”

On performance.

Anthony also says improving his diet has increased his physical performance: “I used to have stomach ulcers and skin rashes pop up out of nowhere because of a poor diet and prescription medications – along with the breakdown of my spine.”Fortunately, “They all disappeared pretty much straight away after changing my diet,” Anthony told us. “But the best thing is I have an MRI image of my spine in 2007 – when I was 27 – and one from 2014 at 34; the comparison is astonishing.”“In the image in 2007 my discs were all black. I had all the top docs saying I should retire. But in the image in 2014 my discs are all white again and healthy. That’s the power of nutrition people need to know about. Food is really medicine.”

Jeff Goldblum Is Wearing The Coolest Shirt You’ll Never Be Able Pull Off
Jeff Goldblum Is Wearing The Coolest Shirt You’ll Never Be Able Pull Off

Do not try this at home. Why? Because you’re not Jeff Goldblum. He’s proven it time and time again but we’re pretty sure the 66-year-old American actor has reached God status when it comes to contemporary men’s style.

Not one to follow suit with the latest trends, Goldblum was spotted overnight at the Disney+ red carpet event in California rocking one of the most comical shirts you’ll ever witness.

We mean that quite literally too because it’s a shirt you can actually sit there and read.

Showcasing his usual flair for 1950s jazz era aesthetics, Goldblum paired his signature piano loafers and black trousers with one hell of a graphic print dress shirt complete with a monochrome comic strip tie and contrasting polka dot sleeves and collar. There’s so much going on here that’s it’s hard to explain the exact style, but it’s best to accept that he’s Goldblum and he can pull it off.

Helping to break up the black and white is a diagonally cut white stripe across the chest which carries comical motifs allover. Think animated explosions, bursts of word bubbles like ‘POW’ and ‘WTF’. On any other man it’ll be a an absolute clusterf*ck of a shirt. On Jeff Goldblum it’s a masterstroke in personal expression.

As usual Goldblum paired his look with his reliable Tank de Cartier timepiece which exudes all kinds of vintage cool. The black leather strap also makes for a great complement to the shirt’s details.

Depending on the size, the Cartier Tank Solo can be acquired for between AU$3,750 and AU$5,100. The watch features the luxury brand’s signature square steel case, beaded crown and Roman numeral adorned dial.

Jeff Goldblum? More like Jeff Godblum. Pow.

New Healthy Eating Guidelines Reveal The Problem With The Paleo Diet
New Healthy Eating Guidelines Reveal The Problem With The Paleo Diet

Up until now, the conventional wisdom was: going paleo is not inherently good or bad but a rather a change that could pay off (or not) depending on how you did it.

New healthy eating guidelines, recently released by The Heart Foundation, challenge this notion, suggesting that even a well planned Paleo is probably too red meat-based, and unnecessarily restrictive.

But first up: the meat. As reported by The Dail Mail, “the guidelines warn Australians should limit how much red meat they eat to about three meals a week if they want to keep their heart in good shape.”

This refutes the claims of the paleo diet championed by celebrity chef Pete Evans, and that of renowned Canadian psychology professor and self-help author, Jordan Peterson, who famously follows a carnivorous diet comprised of exclusively meat.

The recommendations also challenged the Paleo idea that full-fat dairy products are the devil incarnate, with scientists finding their impact upon one’s health to be negligible.

“The Heart Foundation dismissed previous concerns about full-fat dairy products, finding they have no effect on a person’s risk of heart disease or stroke, following a major review of Australian and international research,” The Daily Mail reported.

“The foundation previously recommended everyone stick with reduced-fat dairy products, but now says that’s only necessary for those with high cholesterol, heart disease or type two diabetes.”

For the first time ever, it is also calling for all Australians to restrict their consumption of unprocessed beef, lamb, pork and veal to 350 grams a week, which equates to roughly three lean red-meat meals, due to the growing evidence linking their high consumption to heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Instead, the scientists recommend you source your protein (once you’ve used up your three days of fun) from plant sources like beans, lentils, chickpeas and tofu, or seafood, eggs and chicken.

On that note: the foundation has also completely lifted the former guidelines’ restriction on the maximum recommended number of eggs a healthy person can eat per week (though the researchers still say people with type two diabetes or heart disease should stick to seven eggs a week or fewer).

And of course, the old suggestions regarding butter, ice-cream and dairy-based desserts (i.e. refined carbohydrates and sugar) remain as stringent as ever, with the only silver lining being that “evidence found the dairy fat in milk, cheese and yoghurt does not raise bad LDL cholesterol levels as much as butter or other dairy products,” (The Daily Mail).

Overall, however, the foundation encouraged people to focus on the more general pattern of their eating, not just the specifics of how many eggs (for instance) they ate per week, explaining that this kind of concerted effort is what makes a difference in the long run.

Justin Bieber Shows You How Not To Dress When Evading Life’s Responsibilities
Justin Bieber Shows You How Not To Dress When Evading Life’s Responsibilities

Is he hiding from prying eyes? Is he shoe horning his own clothing line? No one really knows but it’s an odd phenomenon when Canadian pop star Justin Bieber steps out of the gym with his head drooped down whilst wearing one of the brightest hoodies you could ever imagine.

That’s what happened this week in Los Angeles when Bieber was spotted on two separate occasions trying to slide under the radar.

His success rate was naturally ill-fated.

Decked out in a Drew House hoodie under Bieber’s own label, the look consisted of generous splashes of red, blue and yellow over a baggy white canvas with a small Drew House logo. Think your first art piece before you learnt how to use a brush.

He paired the look with Champion basketball shorts Off-White x Nike’s Jordan 1 Retro High “University Blue” and a Louis Vuitton x Supreme red leather duffel bag. Not exactly the most subtle post-gym outfit but hey, if your name ends in Bieber…

Here’s a closer look at the bag which is now discontinued and features a large Supreme logo on one side.

Just a day earlier Bieber was again out and about in Los Angeles but this time rocking the yellow Drew House hoodie with brown Champion shorts and white gum-soled sneakers.

Keen to follow in Bieber’s wardrobe ways? We suppose it should be noted that it’s mainly a millennial thing bar the bag, sneakers and shorts. The bio for Drew House on their site says it all.

“drew house is a place where you can be yourself.
blah blah blah blahsdbksjdfhl wear like you don’t care. come chill. k. bye.”

You’ve been warned.

Why Barcelona’s Luxury Hotels Are Deliberately Becoming Less Luxurious
Why Barcelona’s Luxury Hotels Are Deliberately Becoming Less Luxurious

From Old World arches to Nue Age graffiti, Barcelona is a tourist’s Vermouth-stained dream. But for those with money to burn, the city is no longer the playpen of excess it once was.

How so? Well, even as Gaudi snubbed physics and Idelfons Cerdà i Sunyer organised the city into an iconic grid, neither could have predicted the impact Airbnb would have on Barcelona – centuries after their time.

It’s now 2019, and Barcelona is going through a “frill-aissance”. In other words: luxury hotels like Sir Victor’s keep opening, marking a swing back towards traditional accommodation, and away from Airbnb and Tripping.com.

Need further evidence? Last year the renowned international brand Edition opened a new property in Barcelona, as did Soho House. In addition, Nobu Hotel (another purveyor of understated luxury) is opening its third Spanish property in Barcelona this September.

While you might think this shift away from Airbnb is due to some kind of separatist disdain for globalism, it’s actually more to do with Barcelona’s frustration with the 20 million yearly visitors it receives, many of whom live louder, more drink-infused lifestyles than locals.

And that’s before we get into suitcases that take up the sidewalk.

Anyhow, resident backlash to overtourism has led to legislation being passed against the digital hotel-wreckers, with Barcelona driving Spain to be one of the first countries to crack down on the unregulated accommodation market (a move many other nations have since emulated), opening up space once again for boutique hotels.

But the expectations tourists have developed from Airbnb – both during its heyday in Barcelona and from their ongoing experiences abroad – has changed how Catalan hotels must operate.

As Skift reported on Tuesday, to be competitive in today’s market – which is full of customers who now want to live like locals – luxury hotels are changing their approach from “white glove” to “sophisticated serenity.”

According to Skift, few stays better represent this than Sir Victor hotel, which “opened this June off the famed Passeig de Gràcia… [and] celebrates what Barcelona is and what its visitors hope it to be.”

Named after the Catalan writer Victor Catalá, aka Caterina Albert i Paradís, who wrote under a male pen name and became a symbol of gender equality, Sir Victor embodies the concept of designing a hotel in homage to both past and future.

Another concept imported to Barcelona’s luxury hotels from Airbnb is local living. Or, in the case of Sir Victor – if you can’t live with them, bring them to you…

“One of the most important things in this sphere is to really activate the public areas – all the space outside of the room, Liran Wizman, owner of the Sir Hotel Group recently told Skift. “A really big success for a Sir Hotel would be if 50 percent of the space is open to the public.”

The aim? To attract today’s high-end authenticity seeking consumers who Skift says are “more about mindset… than… bottom line.”

In much the same way, Laurence Dubey, the general manager of the upcoming Nobu Hotel Barcelona, told Skift, “Our guests want luxury, but in a discreet, laid-back, and unpretentious way.”

“They are fun, adventurous travellers who seek discovery and want to unearth the secrets of a destination, exploring up-and-coming neighborhoods and hidden backstreets.”

The takeaway? Although high-end Airbnb’s have previously provided very different experiences to luxury hotels like Sir Victor or Nobu, as the definition of opulence becomes less (discernably) materialistic, they may not remain so disparate.
