Panerai Makes Its Toughest Dive Watch A Bit Less Tough On The Planet
Panerai Makes Its Toughest Dive Watch A Bit Less Tough On The Planet

One of the most exciting releases from Watches & Wonders last year was Panerai’s Luminor Marina eSteel collection, which saw the classic Italian dive watch get an eco-friendly makeover.

These three watches have a seriously cool party trick: over half their total weight is constructed from recycled-based materials, most of that in the form of Panerai’s eSteel alloy, a proprietary stainless steel alloy that incorporates recycled materials.

We think the Luminor Marina Steel collection is absolutely killer. It’s sustainability done right: they prove that using recycled materials doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style or performance. They look and work just like normal Luminors, which is to say extremely well.

Now, at Watches & Wonders 2022, Panerai has given its other famous dive watch – the tough cookie that is the Submersible – the eSteel treatment. Hot take? This new collection of eco-friendly timepieces might be even better than the Luminors they follow in the horological footsteps of.

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel in Grigio Roccia (ref. PAM01288).

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel collection comprises three watches, which come in the same colour variations as the Luminor Marina eSteel collection, namely Blu Profondo (a deep, rich blue), Grigio Roccia (a stealthy grey) and Verde Smeraldo (a luxurious green). If it ain’t broke don’t fix it we suppose.

Also similar to the Luminor eSteel range, 72g of each Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel is made of recycled materials, which corresponds to 52% of the total weight of the watch (137g). This isn’t just down to eSteel, either: the two strap options for the Submersible are made of recycled PET fabric and recycled rubber respectively.

Unlike the Luminors, which feature sunray brushed dials, the Submersibles feature attractive dégradé dials that get darker towards the bottom, a reference to how light gets more scarce the deeper you dive. On top of that, their bezels feature high gloss polished ceramic inserts – a first for Panerai as a brand.

The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel in Verde Smeraldo (ref. PAM01287).

You might be asking, what’s this ‘QuarantaQuattro’ business all about? Well, that’s the other big news from Panerai at Watches & Wonders this year: a new case size for the Submersible, 44m (hence QuarantaQuattro – it’s Italian for 44).

Previously, the Submersible was only available in either 42mm or 47mm case sizes. The former has often been criticised by Paneristi for being too small – remember, this is Panerai we’re talking about, they’re known for huge case sizes – while conversely, the latter is prohibitively large for many watch collectors.

The 44mm of the new Submersible QuarantaQuattro is a real Goldilocks size in our opinion. It’s still very masculine; very Panerai without being obnoxiously large… And for our money, the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteels are the pick of the litter when it comes to these new 44mm marvels. Get amongst it.

Are Twitter Stocks About To Board A SpaceX Rocket To The Moon?
Are Twitter Stocks About To Board A SpaceX Rocket To The Moon?

Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk has purchased 73 million Twitter (TWTR) shares, officially becoming the social media platform’s largest shareholder.

When the news of Musk’s substantial purchase broke on Monday morning, investors were quick to follow suit. The buying frenzy sent Twitter’s share price from $39.30 ($52.11 AUD) at market open to $49.97 ($66.26 AUD) at market close – a staggering 27% increase in just one day.

Musk’s stake in Twitter is now worth around $2.89 billion ($3.4 billion AUD).

TWTR 1 Year Price Chart: TradingView

Musk now controls more than four times the stock of its founder Jack Dorsey – formerly the largest stakeholder of Twitter – who owns just 2.25% of the company. Investing conglomerate, Vanguard is Twitter’s second-biggest shareholder, with an 8.79% stake.

The news comes in the wake of Musk’s recent antics on Twitter, where on March 25, he asked his 80 million followers whether or not Twitter was effective at protecting free speech – to which over 70% of respondents answered: “No.”

In response to this, just two days later, he asked: “Is a new platform needed?”

Musk is no stranger to expressing his opinions on Twitter. In March of this year, Musk challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to a fist fight while war raged in Ukraine, and earlier in February he attracted widespread criticism for a tweet that compared Canadian leader Justin Trudeau to Adolf Hitler.

So, Is Now a Good Time to Buy TWTR Shares?

Putting Musk’s antics aside for a second, the real question is: will Twitter stocks board a SpaceX rocket to the moon or will the Musk hype subside only for Twitter’s recent decline in price to continue?

As you can see in the graph above, Twitter has been having a rough year, and even amongst the recent “Tech Crash” Twitter has been a consistent under-performer when it comes to share price.

According to CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino, Musk’s decision to purchase such a massive portion of Twitter at its lowest price is a very good sign for investors.

“While a passive stake by Musk won’t change TWTR’s fundamentals, we do think his investment will drive greater interest from consumers… Musk’s actual investment is a very small percentage of his wealth, and an all-out buyout should not be ruled out.”

While Musk has made no comment on whether he intends to take control of the company, his enormous stake means that there really isn’t all that much to stop him if he were to change his mind. This is something that some experts find to be worrying, as it’s fairly safe to assume that the management team at Twitter aren’t thrilled with the move – especially after Musk has tweeted so much criticism of the company.

The good news for current or future Twitter shareholders is that the platform’s year long slump has been bucked. The bad news is that the value of TWTR shares is now completely linked to the impulses of an unpredictable Elon Musk.

Designs and features vary, so be sure you know exactly what your prospective best fitness watch will do for you before you go ahead and buy.

Fitness Tracker vs Smartwatch: What’s The Difference?

The main point of difference between a fitness watch and a smartwatch is that fitness trackers tend to be smaller and less cumbersome, often coming in more streamlined designs compared to watches. Think of them more as bracelets. Fitness trackers are also more likely to be cheaper than smartwatches because they offer fewer functions, and they should also sport much longer battery lives, because they don’t need to be powering bright screens for long periods of time.In short, there isn’t much to separate fitness trackers and smartwatches from one another. Fitness trackers can monitor your heart rate, record number of steps taken or distance travelled, for example, and most will now also show you notifications from a connected smartphone. Smartwatches were initially an extension of your smartphone, showing notifications and allowing you to send messages or listen to music. But now they too offer a wide array of fitness tracking capabilities.Admittedly, it is now harder to choose between the two, especially when most people appreciate the convenience of smartwatches and the ability to quickly read messages or see who’s calling, as well as being able to listen to music via wireless Bluetooth headphonesNow without furhter adeu, here’s our picks for the best fitness watch and best fitness trackers.

15 Best Cycling Glasses In 2022
15 Best Cycling Glasses In 2022

If you’re a regular road-going cyclist, chances are you’ve already invested in the full kit – if you haven’t, you can check out some of the finest brands here – but one thing you may have forgotten about within the sea of jerseys, shoes and hats, is a pair of glasses.Cycling glasses are vital for any tarmac chomper, and there are several factors you need to look out for when buying your own pair.

Cycling Glasses Frames

You’ll find whenever you look through a vast range of cycling glasses that some will have a full-frame design while others opt for rimless, leaving just the arms attached to the lens. For the most part, the design you choose comes down to personal preference (you’ll receive no judgement from us if you like the “speed dealer” look).Another feature to consider is ventilation holes. Most pairs of glasses will offer these in some form, usually along the top, or the ‘brow’. You’ll want to make sure the pair you want have them though, as they’ll help to minimise – or ideally completely eradicate – the chances of the lenses fogging up.And of course, you want your glasses to remain securely on your face. To help in this regard, make sure the pair you’re lusting over has grippy pads around the nose and the temple. You can go even further by making sure the (usually) rubberised areas repel water and sweat to keep them glued to your head.

Know Your Cycling Lenses

But you’re not buying cycling glasses for the frame, so much as it’s all about the lens technology, and when it comes to cycling there is plenty to take note of. Firstly, you’ll want to make sure the lenses on your pair offer great UV protection. Your eyes can be exposed to sunlight for hours on end when you’re tearing up the tarmac, and if you cycle at higher altitudes, the effects of UV rays increase the higher up you go.Lens colour can play a huge part too. A lot of pairs of cycling glasses will offer a clear lens option but they should also have various colours to choose from too. The time of day you cycle and the light conditions you regularly experience will determine which colour(s) is/are best for you.Road cyclists, for example, will benefit from lenses that enhance the yellow spectrum of light. Off-road cyclists will be exposed to red and browns of rocks and dirt, so enhancing these colours to bring out detail is paramount, so you can clearly see where your tyres are heading. And don’t think it’s as easy as finding a lens that can offer both, as occasionally, a lens that offers higher contrast may sacrifice definition.Other technologies come into play too, such as photochromic, or transition, lenses. These react to changing light conditions, so when it gets brighter, the lens counteracts by turning darker and vice versa. Different companies have their own versions of this technology, but it’s essentially the same across the board.Aside from shielding your eyes from the sun, cycling glasses also protect your eyes from flying pieces of debris, dust, sand and bugs, none of which you’d want flying into your eyes when you’re hitting the road. We’ve put together a list of the very best cycling glasses currently available, which bring together the perfect combination of style and substance.

Cycling Sunglasses FAQ

Do I need polarized sunglasses for cycling?

Not necessarily. Polarized lenses are great in blocking out horizontal light and reducing glares, but you do not need them. In fact, if you are a mountain or trail biker, they could be detrimental since they affect your depth perception.

What color lens is best for cycling?

The best lens colors for cyclists are amber and rose. These tints are highly recommended for cycling because they increase visual acuity, giving you the brightest field of vision. They are also ideal lenses for weak to no sunlight.

How should my cycling sunglasses fit?

Your cycling sunglasses should fit the size and shape of your face well enough so they will stay put. If you sweat a lot, consider a pair with hydrophilic rubber on the nose and temple pads for added grip.

7 Best Electric Skateboards
7 Best Electric Skateboards

With skateboarding making its Olympic debut earlier this year, it’s safe to say the sport has come a long way since Californians were merely looking for a way to surf on land. The first skateboard known to man was created in the early 50s by a group of guys wanting to invigorate surfing by moving it to streets, which cultivated their nickname, “asphalt surfers”.By the 80s and 90s, skateboarding developed a huge following with skateboarding shops and magazines paying homage to the new age sport. Soon, everyone began embracing it, as skateboarding was viewed as the pinnacle youth subculture, capturing originality and individuality. Though it was seen as the alternative to team sport formally organised by clubs and establishments, skateboarding eventually became mainstream. With the emergence of the new motorised board, the sport was once again redefined as riders were finding they could travel faster, quicker than ever before. Even though electric boards are designed to provide you with a smooth and speedy commute, finding the best one can be a challenge as there are so many designs on offer. When searching for a suitable electric skateboard, you want to make sure it has a strong deck – preferably one made out of maple wood, as they tend to be the most durable. Also, consider its maximum speed and make sure its wireless remote control can easily switch to different a range within seconds. Safety also has to be a priority. Electric skateboard FAQs

Can electric skateboards go on sand?

While many electric skateboards aren't designed to tackle sand, there are a few that can. You'll just have to make sure these electric boards don't get sand stuck in their compartments and the saltwater doesn't cause corrosion. If you're set on riding on the sand, make sure you purchase a board that's water and dust resistant and ensure its components are sealed, so that sand, dirt, or other bits of debris don't get stuck inside.

Do electric skateboards have brakes?

Electric skateboards have a braking system installed. Usually, they're designed with regenerative braking or a combination of regenerative and dynamic braking. The regenerative braking system is mostly used for electric skateboards as it redirects energy straight back into the battery, recharging it.

How long do electric skateboards last?

Mexico Does The Unimaginable With Its Presidential Jet
Mexico Does The Unimaginable With Its Presidential Jet

To many wannabe ballers, turning your nose up at a private jet you inherited for free would be unthinkable. But while some people would do anything to have a private jet, others are desperate to get rid of the one they already own.

Enter: austerity advocate (and Mexico president) Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who takes commercial flights, and who has decided his presidential private jet – a Boeing 787 Dreamliner – which he inherited from his predecessors, is an “insult” to the people of Mexico. To rectify the situation, he has been trying to sell the jet, but to no avail.

Unable to sell it (he’s been trying for three years – basically ever since he’s been in office), he has now decided to offer to rent it out to birthday and wedding planners.

“The plane is being handed over so it can be rented, so it’s being used, so it’s flying and can generate an income,” Lopez Obrador said at a news conference.

The plane is to be given to a military construction company – Olmeca Maya Mexica – which is also in charge of operating various airports and the president’s “Mayan Train” project.

Obrador gave the example of someone “getting married and is going to take their family and friends” by air, and also said it could be rented out for birthdays and company trips.

The plane was bought for approximately $218 million (AU $289 million) during former President Felipe Calderon’s 2006-2012 term in office. The only one to use it though, was his successor, Enrique Pena Nieto (who was in office from 2012 to 2018).

The presidential jet is super customised, and has an executive bedroom, a private bathtub and seats up to 80 people.

We’re sure there will be some people there who simply can’t fathom why a person would sell a private jet they inherited for free. But as they say: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
