The World Rally Championship might not enjoy the same status and popularity as Formula One these days, but it’s certainly responsible for inspiring the creation of some of the coolest cars of all time.
Lancia Delta HF Integrale. Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Renault 5 Turbo. Toyota Celica GT-Four. These cars are all legends both on and off the track, and remain some of the most desirable cars money can buy.
But the coolest – and perhaps most influential – road-going rally car ever made is the original Audi Quattro. Also known as the Audi Coupé Quattro or the Ur-Quattro, the boxy all-wheel-drive speedster is a dream car for many. But they were sadly never sold in Australia, making them rather hard to come by.
Naturally, this makes this close to mint condition 1985 example, set to go under the hammer with Collecting Cars in Sydney, a truly exciting prospect.

It’s hard to overstate how legendary the Ur-Quattro is. Not only was it Audi’s first-ever all-wheel-drive vehicle, but it was also the first all-wheel-drive rally car – it completely changed the game.
Produced from 1980 to 1991, the Ur-Quattro was powered by a turbocharged inline-five making between 147 and 162kW, depending on the model years (later years received a slightly higher displacement, DOHC engine). As the name implies, the real special sauce was its Quattro generation I permanent all-wheel-drive system, which has since birthed a whole line of Audi all-wheel-drive systems models.
Other revolutionary features of the Ur-Quattro included independent front and rear suspension (highly unusual at the time) as well as an exceptionally 80s LCD instrument cluster for the 1983 model year.
To this day, the Ur-Quattro remains one of the most successful rally cars of all time, responsible for 23 WRC victories between 1981 and 1985, including the first-ever WRC win by a woman: Michèle Mouton at the 1981 San Remo Rally. In short, it’s a bloody icon.

This 1985 model is in stellar condition, with only 118,000 miles on the clock, no known bodywork damage and only minor wear and tear. Notably, it comes with a full set of Australian import documents, a comprehensive service history, tax discs and MOT from its life in the United Kingdom, as well as the original tool kit.
RELATED: Audi Slams The Door On Electric Vehicle Haters With ‘Continent-Spanning’ Experiment
Something else that makes this Ur-Quattro particularly special is its ‘Tornado Red’ duco. A Tornado Red Ur-Quattro was famously the vehicle of choice of DCI Gene Hunt in the award-winning British crime drama Ashes to Ashes, the sequel series to Life on Mars.
As Collecting Cars relates, “this 1985 Audi Ur-Quattro has been well preserved and is a standout example of the iconic performance car. It is in fine mechanical order, with its owner praising its effortless ability to mix with modern traffic, and is ready to be enjoyed by another enthusiast.”

These cars are exceptionally rare, especially in right-hand drive and in this condition. Honestly, we can’t think of a better lockdown investment.
There are currently two days left on the auction, with the current bid sitting at $65,000 with no reserve. All things considered, that’s a steal – although we don’t want to start a bidding war. We haven’t placed our bid yet, you see.
If you want to be the next owner of this truly pristine 80s icon, head on over to Collecting Cars quick-smart and get your Vorsprung durch Technik going.

Summer is in full swing, vaccines are in arms, and planes are bursting at the seams right now in the US.
This ‘back to travel’ boom has created an unusual problem for US airlines – they have too many passengers and not enough crew.
The fast-paced return of domestic travel has many airlines scrabbling to hire back staff after the layoffs that occurred at the beginning of the pandemic.
As Marketplace reported last week, “American Airlines is calling back all 3,300 flight attendants who’ve been on voluntary leave, in addition to hiring 800 more.”
Marketplace also reported that Airlines are bringing back pilots who’ve been on leave and looking for new ones.
But this isn’t simple; pilots must maintain a high level of skill and accreditation. Creating a pilot isn’t something you can do overnight. Simon Azar of flight simulator company CAE told Marketplace, “If you want to create a pilot from scratch, it takes two to three years to be able to get them into an airline seat.”
This is a problem Australia should learn from (though there is no easy fix, given how much of a financial battering all airlines have taken). That said, given we are well behind the US in terms of Returning To Normal, we may still have time to mitigate the same squeeze happening to us down the line.
At the time of writing though it looks like more needs to be done. Earlier this month Qantas pilots shared some of their struggles on the airline’s online communication system Yammer, in response to Qantas executive John Gissing in June seeking to “start a conversation” about Men’s Health Week.
The messages were obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald.
One message, from one Qantas pilot who hasn’t flown in over a year, spoke of not being able to sleep through the night, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
“The financial hit has been significant, but it pales in comparison to the mental hit. The worry that breeds from uncertainty is palpable,” he wrote. “The uncertainty eats at you every day; it clouds your thinking, it affects your decisions and corrodes relationships.”
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, “He warned the mental effects will be significant, and international crew felt abandoned as other parts of Qantas expanded while they faced a ‘seemingly endless’ period of stand-down.”
With long haul international travel still probably a long way off, pilots of jets like A380s do not anticipate their ground spells to end any time soon. Especially given all 12 of Qantas’ superjumbos are currently parked in the California desert, and not expected to return to action until 2023.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, “nearly all the A380 pilots have been stood down since March last year, while 787 and A330 pilots are being rotated between stand-down and active duty.”
As one Qantas pilot told DMARGE in 2020: “The elephant in the ‘flight deck’… is what our industry is going to look like on the other side of this, and who is going to have a job.”
“That’s obviously a significant stress [point] to have in a very safety-sensitive environment and one we need to look out for, and look after each other, in order to manage.”
When international travel returns though, it could return quickly. As Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) president Murray Butt told The Australian earlier this year, “There’s a lot of pent-up demand for international travel.”
“Once borders do reopen, it will be interesting to see how quickly that moves.”
Though the short staffing problem the US is experiencing right now is primarily domestic, when Australia opens again to the world it will be interesting to see if we face similar issues.
Qantas is currently anticipating most of its international network to restart at the end 2021 – but that forecast, like many pandemic related predictions, is subject to change.

The post One Big Lesson Australia Can Learn From America's 'Return To Travel' Boom appeared first on DMARGE Australia.
These days, even the most stuffy Frenchman would have to admit that the United States produces some rather good wine, most of which comes out of The Golden State – California.
America’s most populous state boasts some of the best wine regions in the world, many of which are household names, like the Napa Valley or Sonoma County. It also does volume: California alone is responsible for about 90% of the American wine supply and if it was its own country, it would be the world’s fourth-largest wine producer.
But this over US$40 billion industry is increasingly at the mercy of rising temperatures and horrendous wildfires, which are both getting worse and more frequent thanks to global warming.
A recent New York Times exposé reveals how dwindling water supplies, record-breaking heat and rising insurance premiums (as well as insurance companies increasingly denying seasonal or fire-related claims) has stretched the Californian wine industry to a breaking point.
Beyond that, the industry is the canary in the coal mine for American (and global) agriculture more broadly, as the article relates:
“Their fate matters even for those who can’t tell a merlot from a malbec. Napa boasts some of the country’s most expensive farmland, selling for as much as $1 million per acre; a ton of grapes fetches two to four times as much as anywhere else in California.”
“If there is any nook of American agriculture with both the means and incentive to outwit climate change, it is here. But so far, the experience of winemakers here demonstrates the limits of adapting to a warming planet.”

One key issue is that it’s extremely expensive to protect grapes from high temperatures and fires. Installing fire extinguishers, replanting vines or even erecting shade cloths are all costly measures – indeed, shade clothes can easily become kindling if a fire is blazing out of control.
Thankfully, there’s one solution to protect grapes from high heat that sounds bizarre but is surprisingly effective – applying sunscreen to grapes.
It’s something Australian growers have been doing for a long time now, as this ABC News report from 2019 relates. Typically based on kaolin clay, the sunscreen is a relatively cheap form of sun protection and is also commonly sprayed on other fruits and vegetables, such as apples and avocados.
RELATED: The Humble Australian Wine Trend America Will Never Understand
It may sound strange but it’s not a recreational pursuit. Grapes can easily get sunburned, which totally ruins them – you just end up with a vineyard full of foul-tasting, expensive raisins still on the vine. If spraying your grapes with clay is the difference between a successful and failed harvest, it’s no laughing matter.

Recent years have seen multiple instances where Australian experts have been sought in California to help combat climate change and fight fires. Notably, Australian firefighters headed to California last year to help out during their wildfire season – returning the favour, as Californian firefighters who came to Australia’s aid during our Black Summer.

Australian drought management techniques are also being employed in California, such as more efficient irrigation systems and more stringent groundwater pumping legislation.
It’s not just the US’ winemakers and farmers that need to start adopting Australian climate change management techniques like these. Summer wildfires and hotter temperatures are also becoming increasingly common in European countries such as Portugal, Italy and Spain, the latter two of which are two of the world’s biggest wine producers and major agricultural nations.
It just goes to show – if you like drinking wine, you might need to do more about the environment.

Body image expectations have swung all over the place over the years. In cavemen times you had to store enough fat to make it through the winter. In A.D 800 you had to be fit enough to go to war with a broken leg. In Tudor Times you had to rock a laughable haircut and still take yourself seriously. In 2019 you had to have a voluptuous dad bod.
Well, now that’s all changed. Now, at the risk of projecting our own insecurities on the rest of you, we all need rippling abs and a huge chest.
That’s if you take Russell Westbrook, father of three, as the new benchmark for dad bods. The 32-year-old NBA star (he is a nine-time NBA All-Star and earned the NBA Most Valuable Player Award for the 2016–17) recently posted a bunch of images with his family at the beach that make us want to make a beeline for the gym.

It seems we are not alone. Fitness training account with 1 million followers @justtrain wrote: “Incredible!!! Also I’m headed to the gym!” underneath Westbrook’s post.
Artist Cory Bailey wrote: “Enjoy that time off big dawggg.”
This image, which Westbrook posted last month, as well as more recent images, which Westbrook posted last week, were all reposted on Instagram by Complex on the weekend, sending the internet into a low key frenzy.

Captioning the post, “family matters” Complex sparked a tonne of Dom Torreto quips and comments.
From “Russell Chestbrook” to “Dom Torreto enters the chat” Complex followers had a field day.
Though Westbrook is a professional athlete and so obviously going to be in much stronger shape than the bulk of the population, we’ll be damned if we’re not going to admire it.
We’d even say he has set the ‘summer body’ bar higher than Cristiano Ronaldo did last year.
Now if you’ll excuse us we’re off to find some barbells.

Say what you like about Justin Bieber, but you have to admit that he’s got a fantastic taste in shirts.
He might veer out of the box (sometimes impressively, but often bizarrely) when it comes to footwear (or haircuts, or suits…) but the 27-year-old Canadian pop superstar has really been knocking it out of the park lately when it comes to slick summer shirts.
At the start of July, Bieber took to Instagram to show off a colourful Bode shirt he rocked while on vacation in Greece. If his Mediterranean holiday wasn’t enough to have lockdown-weary Australians champing at the bit, his amazing summer style certainly was – we reckon there’ll be more than just a few Aussies trying to emulate his look once summer rolls around in the Southern Hemisphere.
Now ‘The Biebs’ has shown off yet another winning warm-weather look, pairing a guayabera with some crisp linen trousers and a red paisley bandanna in a Cuban-inspired ensemble while galivanting around California.
View this post on Instagram
If Bieber’s outfit wasn’t Cuban enough, the stogie certainly sealed the deal…
The guayabera is a style of men’s summer shirt popular in Cuba, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Normally made of linen, silk, or cotton, guayaberas typically feature closely sewn pleats (called alforzas) and multiple pockets. Bieber’s example features two pockets and a swathe of thick, striped alforzas.
They’re a great summer shirting choice, as they brilliantly straddle the line between casual and formalwear. Indeed, in many countries, guayaberas are often considered formalwear and are often worn in office contexts or even to weddings.
RELATED: The Smart Casual Dress Code For Men Explained
It’s also common practice for foreign dignitaries to don guayaberas as a sign of solidarity – for example, former US presidents Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all worn guayaberas when visiting Central and South America.

Bieber’s been enjoying an extended summer holiday, flitting between Europe and the US along with a huge entourage including his supermodel wife Hailey, manager Scooter Braun and rising Australian hip-hop star The Kid Laroi.
RELATED: Incredible Italy Photo Shows What We Can Look Forward To When International Travel Resumes
Laroi’s latest single Stay, which features Bieber as a guest vocalist, debuted at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart and at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Now that’s worth lighting up a cigar for.

There’s a lot you can do with $142,131. You could buy 355 pairs of Common Projects sneakers. You could buy a Porsche Cayenne. You could stay at Mykonos’ most expensive villa for 20 nights in a row. You could buy around 178 bottles of Penfolds Grange 2014. You could buy more than 43 thousand Peronis.Or… You could buy this 70-year-old bottle of Penfolds Grange from 1951.While the rest of us sat wondering, one Sydney-based collector recently did exactly that at auction, setting a new record for the most expensive bottle of Australian wine ever sold. The 70-year-old bottle of Penfolds Grange is from the first vintage of the iconic Grange Shiraz.Interestingly, the vintage was first intended to be an experimental wine. Then history happened – and now Grange is the icon we know it as today. The 70-year-old bottle was also signed by pioneering Australian winemaker and creator of Grange Hermitage, Max Schubert. Suffice to say, it’s very rare – hence the record-breaking $142,131 price tag.Unfortunately for all you vicarious hedonists though, Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago told 4BC this bottle was bought to be collected, not drunk. He also, however, revealed that the legendary 1952 and 1953 and 1955 Grange Hermitage vintages “currently offer magnificent hedonistic drinking enjoyment.” He would know, having tasted them over the years during re-corking missions.Mr Gago also said it’s a testimony to Australian wine that these vintages from the 1950s are still looking as good as ever for drinking, bar the 1951 “experimental” one that just sold, which was an exploratory vintage (“that’s it’s raison d’etre”), and fetched its price out of its collectability.RELATED: The Difference Between Cheap & Expensive Wine, Revealed By An Expert“I really can’t emphasise enough that the ’52, ’53 and ’55 are incredulous drinking today – in January of 2021,” Mr Gago added.
“Isn’t that a wonderful thing for Australian red wine to say. These wines are looking as good as they ever have… They are still offering amazing drinking enjoyment. This isn’t just a matter of curio or rarity effect. These are great red wines.”
Another lovely thing to think about is, looking to the future, Mr Gago said wines will last even longer, given the improvements in today’s bottling and viticultural technology. We’ll drink to that.

Sydney and Melbourne are trussed up with rules right now. A necessary sacrifice for the greater good, this has led millions of people to be bored and restless. It has one silver lining though: it’s bringing our inner bartenders to the fore. But if you haven’t the first clue how to mix a Margie, or nail a Negroni, Australian model Simone Holtznagel is here to save the day.Simone made headlines last week as she shared how she was keeping herself occupied in lockdown on her 28th birthday, sending the Daily Mail into a spin by pouring herself a glass of Rose wine.Without getting all tabloid on you, today we’d like to share a few of her cocktail making videos, which should help anyone stuck for inspiration about what to drink during their next round of Zoom calls.Simone posted two cocktail shaking videos from her Wollongong residence over the weekend. The first featured a pomegranate and gin number called the Killer Queen, which she sourced from @thefitzbulli.“Can I interest anyone in a Killer Queen?” she captioned the video. “@thefitzbulli are doing take away cocktails during lockdown! Easy pick up, take home and shake baby! Even the most amateur bartender (such as myself) can feel like a total pro.”

The second featured a Spicy Mango Margarita.

“I’m sure one day I will be able to shake a cocktail shaker properly and not shake my tig ol’ bitties about, but today is not that day,” Simone captioned the video. “Besides, @thefitzbulli is the tits. Spicy Mango Margarita to spice up an otherwise dull afternoon in lockdown. @thefitzbulli are slinging takeaway cocktails and let me tell you, its a party.”Simone has also recently shared a top-notch French Martini recipe.

Simone told DMARGE: “A lot of my work has been rescheduled, so besides working out, really the only thing to do is cook, and what goes perfectly with cooking? Drinking. To me, something about having a cocktail at home just seems so extra and quite luxe – especially in these fucking grim times.”
“I’ll take the small wins like that where I can get them at this stage of our Covid journey.”
“A lot of my favourite bars are doing take home cocktails as well so it’s our duty to support local businesses,” Simone added.
“I’ve been planning out a weekly menu and I will often plan a certain cocktail for a pre dinner drink. It’s something to look forward to and to me, signifies ‘relax’ mode.”
Simone told The Daily Telegraph earlier this year she “gets so much interaction when I post cooking stuff or making cocktails” instead of “half dressed” photos.“I think it is kind of refreshing for people to see, rather than just another chick half-dressed on Instagram,” she added.
“I could post a photo in lingerie or swimwear every day but it gets old after a while.”
Simone shot to fame in 2011 when she placed second runner-up on Australia’s Next Top Model, before moving to the United States, where she landed her first Playboy cover back in October 2015, before moving back to Wollongong recently.Simone has previously spoken to DMARGE about brutally shutting down dic pic crusaders on Instagram and how not to sound silly when sliding into someone’s DM’s.

Traditions. We love them almost as much as we hate them.Simultaneously holding us back and keeping us in check. Giving us a sense of identity but restricting us. Providing us with a foundation but one with holes in it. Still, arguably, better than nothing.Though there is an argument to be made that links to the past keep us sane, there’s also an argument to be made that if you hold rigidly to everything that is old you risk becoming a fossil.Speaking of calcification: German airline group Lufthansa recently announced a change to its inflight greeting language and some people are not happy about it.Lufthansa announced on the 13th of July that it would, from now on, be greeting passengers using gender-neutral language. So no more “ladies and gentlemen”. Instead, the airline will now refer to passengers as “guests,” or simply greeted with a cheerful: “Good morning here on board,” Lufthansa said in a statement.“Diversity and equality are core values for our company and our corporate culture. From now on, we want to express this attitude in our language as well – and show that diversity is not just a phrase, but a lived reality.”Lufthansa is not the first airline to make this change. Japanese airline JAL did it in 2020, and European budget carrier EasyJet and Canadian flagship airline Air Canada both did it back in 2019. Swiss Air, Brussells Air, Austria Airlines and Eurowings have also made the same change. Some people find it ridiculous though.
I am proud of being a Gentleman and when I pay €1,000s for a 1st Class seat I expect to be treated as such!
— SB (@EUHunter) July 14, 2021
Cohost of GB News Alex Phillips criticised the airline for flying into “storm clouds of wokery.”“When will the madness stop. Anyone who gets offended by the term ladies and gentleman frankly needs to get off the plane and go for a lie down on a leather chaise lounge surrounded by pot plants with a kindly therapist,” she said.
“It makes me wonder how long we have to wait before we start retrospectively cancelling centuries of things based upon biological sex because that’s what we do isn’t it, we have to correct the present then when we finish doing that we take it into history.”
In response to this news bite, one Twitter user wrote: “Honestly the best 10 minutes of the day …just really sums up how the silent majority feel about allot of things but are to polite to say…but that aside you Honestly make my my day Alex and give me a giggle.”“She is spot on, the term ladies and gentlemen is not offensive and it can not be removed from life. Sorry but I’m proud to be a woman and want to be called one and my sons who play football and rugby are men and are proud to be men,” another wrote.Others threatened to boycott the airline.
Doubt I’ll fly @lufthansa again
— Bat211resisting (@bat211) July 15, 2021
Others supported the change, however, and ripped into those complaining for complaining.“If your [sic] an adult, and are being angry at changing the terminology to ‘dear guests’ or ‘good morning/good evening’ as the company spokesperson has said they will be using; you need to give your head a wobble and stop wetting the bed, its a non issue,” one Twitter user wrote. “Its not that big of a deal.”
Inclusivity! A good move by @lufthansa https://t.co/q3gbJVPXoF via @FRANCE24

Others stood on the fence (though with their legs dangling over one side) and nitpicked.
Business News: #Lufthansa airline will no longer use ‘ladies and gentlemen’ greeting for passengers and replace with gender-neutral alternative. Another passenger also raised issues around the limitations of the booking software.

Our thoughts? The phrase “ladies and gentlemen” isn’t being plucked from your lips with the threat of rats eating your face if you disobey. An airline is just choosing to use another type of greeting, in a certain context, in a gesture of goodwill (and because they think it will make them look good to a growing demographic).Though the fact language is being, to a degree, policed does sound Orwellian, this video helps explain – to anyone outraged by the announcement – why we should consider opening our minds to allowing language to evolve, and to why empathy may well trump tradition in this case.It also goes a way to explaining why these changes are not necessarily ridiculous and patronising and pandering to a generation of ‘soft’ millennials but may actually be valuable gestures of goodwill (though perhaps there could be a bit of both at play). In summary? Young open-minded types are likely to be impressed by Lufthansa’s jumping on the bandwagon, and see it as brave in the face of the predictable wave of conservative kickback. Older more conservative people are likely to shake their head at it and call it weak and pandering to liberal fascism. How will it affect the airline’s bottom line? Only time and ticket sales will tell.As a side note: if you want to know how to get special treatment on a flight, watch the following video to see a flight attendant reveal the “one simple thing” that will get you “royal treatment” from cabin crew…
