How To Get Kanye West's Style; The Master Of Zero Cares Fashion

Often seen in baggy jeans, weighed down by a huge ‘Chicago’ belt buckle, West’s best attempt at ‘luxury’ was a tasteless monogrammed Louis Vuitton backpack fastened awkwardly to his faster-better-stronger-frame.

Then something changed; Kanye met Kim, and the latter showed the former the pleasures of slim-fit jeans. One Fendi internship later (and a slew of collaborations with Nike, A.P.C and Louis Vuitton) Kanye launched his first full fashion collection ‘Yeezy’ this season in New York. Then, thanks to the honorary doctorate awarded by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kanye was this month knighted as a general practitioner of design.

Thanks for waiting – Dr West will see you now.

Breaking It Down – Kanye West Style

In a state of infinite casual, Kanye’s overall style is essentially a blend of two key musical subcultures: rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop. Never having quite let go of his urban roots, oversized silhouettes mesh with glam rock velvets and furs, while the odd tailored jacket and overcoat for a touch of military prowess, marches onto the field. Torn between looks and themes, it wouldn’t be the style of Kanye West, without some controversy.

Dinner Time

The dinner jacket is a key tailoring piece for Kanye. Whether bopping down the street in an all-black urban look or attending a VIP event, the black le smoking with shawl lapel can be found over a tee and jeans. For special occasions, the black-tie jacket gets a makeover, updated in plush velvet and electric blue; the sheen of the fabric bolstered by the addition of a metallic watch or chain.

Military Man

Army green and clay brown are Kanye’s staple colours for 2019. When in Paris for a fashion show, he adds a sporty, hipster touch to the camo-hues with ripped-up skinny jeans, rocker suede boots and a velvet sweater. Other times, Sergeant West comes to life with his camouflage-print bomber and traditional duck boots in tonal mud brown; not missing his typical sporty, hood popping out over the top, reminding us all of his street origins.

Sneaker Freaker

When he’s not in a pair of suede Chelsea’s or military duck boots, Kanye is wearing sneakers: block-coloured and bright or minimal and white. Most of the time they are his own Yeezy x Adidas collaboration or his luxed-up pair from Louis Vuittion. But whatever the logo, the style remains the same; hi-tops and super catchy – for when Kanye wants to add a little ‘kick’ to his muted colour palette.

Tonal Monochrome

Most of Kanye’s clothes are black and white but the two are rarely worn together. For fear of looking like a waiter, Kanye prefers his monochrome kept tonal; working all-black or white into a complete outfit. The latter hue can be tricky. And as Kanye shows, a tonal white outfit needs to be crisp, stark and ultimately clean – no dirty sneakers here. All black is a favourite suiting look; the matte-finish broken up with satin lapels and patent shoes. Keep these stripped-back hues for formal occasions, like weddings. Or if you’re important enough, the red carpet.

Primitive Luxe

Now a fashion designer, fabric has never been so important. Opting for fur (and sometimes the faux variety), Kanye’s outerwear look is rather primitive with a penchant for animal skin. Taking a note from Cruella de Ville, the star is never understated – donning a shorthaired mac coat for the autumnal air, and a wintry plush trench in fur-look velvet. Layered over a knit or hoodie and heavy-duty boots, it’s a textural take on how a (brave) man can work furry things in to his wardrobe.

Key Kanye Fashion Items

Let’s ignore the fact he’s almost always dressed from head to toe in his own Yeezy label.

Coats

Berluti’s shearling coat with eccentric fleece collar is must for the sued-ish plush, and the Haider Ackermann floral jacquard bomber (or the one in gold velvet) is all-kinds of Kanye eccentric. For military inspired coats, go Gucci or Thom Browne.

Sweats

Tees are plain and longline, typical of the styles offered by Bassike. For the graphic print variety, his Yeezy label are the ones you need, as well as the rockier offerings from Allsaints. Sweaters, with hoodies from J.Crew and Alexander McQueen are a must and velvet jumpers come from Haider Ackermann.

Suits

Rich in lush textures such as velvet, satin and brocade Balmain provides the luxury blazers worn by Kanye. As brand ambassador, his suits are Balmain, too. Louis Vuitton is his go-to when refinement calls, but any slim-fit shawl lapel jacket in black is a Kanye-must.

Bottoms

Never in chinos or trousers, Kanye’s jeans (of the ripped kind) are best sourced from Hood by Air or locally at Zanerobe. For something cleaner, go for A.P.C. His jogger pants come care of Publish and Shades of Grey.

Shoes

Suede boots maketh the man. Kanye’s feel like Grenson Chelseas or Guidi’s lace-ups. Of course, his sneaker of choice is Louis Vuitton for luxury and his very own Adidas Originals X Yeezy.

Accessories

Black-look tortoiseshell acetate fames are very Kanye in Saint Laurent squared silhouette. Santiago Gonzalez makes West’s crocodile skin leather-goods and jewellery comes care of Versace with its Medusa gold neck chain.

Chris Hemsworth Shows You How To Dress Smart Casual Like A Nordic God
Chris Hemsworth Shows You How To Dress Smart Casual Like A Nordic God

Being a part of the world’s most successful film is no small feat, but Chris Hemsworth appears to have pulled off another winner beyond ‘Avengers’ duties – the red camo suit.Stepping out in Los Angeles for the premiere of ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ this week, Hemsworth rocked one of the coolest smart casual looks of the year and he did it with just 4 items of clothing — 5 if you include the watch. This is no Nordic sorcery, this is simply Hemsworth in his A-list element. Let’s run you through his looks.Alongside the lovely wife, Elsa Pataky, Hemsworth wore a complete blazer and trouser combo which featured a distinct dark red camo print. You could call it mahogany hue but under light it’s definitely more noticeable. The casual aspect of the look consisted of a simple scoop neck tee in charcoal and dark brown loafers. A pocket square would have helped in breaking up the darkness a bit but Hemsworth has never been big on menswear accessories. Nonetheless it was a slick looking summer ensemble which exudes God-like levels of casual cool.Being a TAG Heuer ambassador also has its perks. On Hemsworth’s wrist was the Heuer Heritage Calibre Heuer 02 featuring a stainless steel bracelet, chronograph automatic movement and a 42mm polished steel case. With a retail sticker price of AU$7,800, it won’t break the bank for those in the market for a classic looking Swiss watch.Smart casual God status achieved.

Morning Coffee Mistake Costs Tourists $1,500 In Venice
Morning Coffee Mistake Costs Tourists $1,500 In Venice

Every culture is different but the first sip of your morning brew is something everyone holds sacred. Which is why two German tourists were so surprised when they were fined $1,500 for enjoying a long black next to The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy — one of the most coffee-slurping cities in the world.

As reported by The Independent, the backpackers — a man and woman in their 30s — “were arrested by local police after a resident spotted them… using a camping stove.” They were then fined €950 (A$1,513) — and ordered to leave Venice — for contravening the “rules of public decorum and respect,” city officials said.

Image via Comune di Venezia

Why so serious? According to Traveller, “Public order laws in Venice, which receives some 30 million tourists a year, include bans on picnicking at certain sites and going shirtless in public spaces.”

And it just so happens the oblivious pair of tourists were camped out on the steps of the iconic Rialto bridge.

Hence the indignation of Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who said: “Venice must be respected and those impolite people who come here and do what they want must understand that. Thanks to the local police, they will be sanctioned and removed.”

This comes at a moment where Venice faces significant challenges with over-tourism, having introduced a controversial tax (€8 during high season and €10 during “critical” times) for short-stay visitors earlier this year.

Much like Barcelona and — to a lesser extent — Polignano a Mare, Venice has experienced local backlash against tourists, who have vastly different lifestyle expectations from a city, and who take over the place in summer months, “far outnumbering locals,” (Traveller).

“The city’s population basically peaked in the 1500s, and though it rallied again to near 16th century levels in the 1970s, today there are just one third as many Venetians as 50 years ago,” (Traveller).

While there are just 270,884 permanent residents in Venice, around 20 million tourists pass through each year — a number which World Population Review says “increases with every year that passes.”

Moral of the story? When you visit the city of coffee and canals, either book somewhere where you get a complimentary latte with breakfast or — if your budget is more student than CEO — make the most of your hostel kitchen and brew your espresso there.

Justin Theroux Made Cargo Pants Cool Again With A $40,000 Rolex
Justin Theroux Made Cargo Pants Cool Again With A $40,000 Rolex

The year was 2001 and you’re about to swing into your local video game arcade for a bit of Daytona action. Your wardrobe consists of a Von Dutch tee, Vans slip-ons and cargo pants.

You know, the bottoms that were notorious for packing way more pockets than was humanely required. The coolest lads championed it and so did you. Then they disappeared from the menswear vernacular altogether.

A (rightfully) forgotten icon in the menswear space? Guess again because Justin Theroux just brought it back in 2019 and somehow managed to make it look ridiculously cool with the help of a $40,000 vintage gold Rolex.

The American actor was spotted walking his dog on the streets of New York City this week looking like a proper off-duty air force pilot. The aviator sunglasses were there, the fitted black tee with vintage print, the sturdy black leather boots and of course those cargo pants in a slick military green wash. On closer inspection the cargo pants on Theroux are actually different to what you’re probably used to. They’re way more tapered and fitted below the knee to leave enough length for rolling. The result is a look which mimics that of selvedge denim but in a very cool cargo pant look.

It wasn’t just a simple case of cargo pants and a tee, though. Helping Theroux on his stylish adventure was his trusty1971 18K gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date. The watch itself isn’t anything astronomical in the Rolex world – it retails in the region of AU$30,000 to AU$40,000 – but it is good to see someone wearing a Rolex as a daily. A subtle gold necklace and masculine looking pitbull gave Theroux instant John Wick street cred (we don’t recommend you actually get a dog for John Wick street cred).

Summer in the big apple never looked this urban chic. Final tip: just be sure you have the biceps to back it up.

Australian Doctor Reveals The Dangers Of Working Out When You’re Sick
Australian Doctor Reveals The Dangers Of Working Out When You’re Sick

Put the dumbbell down. That’s the advice from Australia doctor Brad McKay who says that gym junkies who continue to push through when they’re under the weather could potentially do some serious self harm.

The crux of this issue isn’t so much the common sense aspect that tells us to rest when we’ve got a flu, but more so the dedication of gym junkies who attempt to push through their fitness routines at any cost.

Whether you’re about to get sick, are sick or on the way to recovery, there’s important details to know when it comes to balancing your workouts with recovery.

How Sick Is Too Sick To Workout

It’s just a minor cold so suck it up, be a man and don’t skip leg day. This is a common enough mentality and Dr. McKay says that taking this advice on board comes with its risks.

“It depends on why you’re sick. If you’ve got a head cold with sinuses and a stuffy nose you’re unlikely to run into any problems.”

The real issue according to the doctor is what you could spread to everyone else with mucous on your hands and dripping all over shared equipment.

“If you have influenza however, then that causes inflammation in the entire body. This will lead to mild issues like feeling weak and not being able to lift weights you used to,” warns Dr. McKay.

“You can also have low blood pressure and when you get dehydrated from working out, your blood pressure can drop even more, making you more prone to injuries when feeling light headed.”

In other words, you definitely don’t want to be bench lifting when you’re sick.

What’s Happening To Your Body

The severe extreme is cases of inflammation in the body. Dr. McKay explains that this involves all the ‘itis’ conditions which can cause the lining around the outside of the heart to become inflamed. The heart muscle itself can also be inflamed along with the brain.

“These cases are rare but if people do push it then they can end up in hospital pretty quickly,” he says.

Exercising To Fight Off Colds

It’s an old myth that’s been kicking around for a while. ‘Run off your cold’ or just ‘sweat it out and you’ll be fine’.

“I did not learn that in medical school and there’s no medical evidence to back it,” says McKay.

“There’s this myth perpetuated that if you’re just a little bit sick, just sweat out your cold or flu. As doctors we really don’t recommend it.”

Just as the dangers we mentioned above, McKay explains that getting dehydrated and light-headed can make you clumsier in the gym. Misjudge your footing on a serious overhead lift and you could be in trouble.

“Most health professionals will say take it easy and then when you’re fully back on board, get back to your exercise regime.”

The Right Time To Start Working Out Again

The guidelines are vague depending on the type of illness but McKay says that the common cold or influenza should last for around 5-7 days before you’re on the mend.

“Some people are sick for weeks, some people with types of influenza can be sick 3-4 weeks in a row. For a main guide, take 5-7 days away from your regular schedule to recover.”

Working Out When You’re On Medication

Dedication is a unique kind of beast often demonstrated by gym junkies. You’re kind of sick, but you’re on meds. That’s a green light to a HIT class, right? Not quite.

Taking cold and flu tablets can make you feel a little better and you may feel good enough to work or gym, but it’s really not making you heal more quickly from the illness you’ve got.

“It’s a false sense of security in that regard. You can still be infectious, you might feel great and okay but someone else can get the virus. It’s more about community responsibility as well.”

Drinking Protein Shakes When You’re Sick

Protein shakes may be the building blocks to muscles but they’re useless when you’re sick. Whilst it’s unlikely to hurt you if you do drink these energy and protein supplements when you have a cold, the effects of the sugar could lead to excess calories that aren’t burnt. In other words you could be wasting your money and putting on weight says Dr. McKay.

What To Eat Or Drink To Help Speed Up Recovery

According to research from Heinz, men are the worst culprits when it comes to showing up at work when they’re sick, so it’s little surprise they have the same attitude towards the gym.

To avoid dehydration when you’re sick, Dr. McKay recommends drinking fluids with electrolytes which will stay in your system for longer when compared to plain water which tends to pass through quickly. If you’ve lost your appetite, soups are also a good option as they provide plenty of nutrients and vitamins.

And what shouldn’t you drink when you’re sick? Alcohol. “Some people recommend having a hot whisky with honey, but we don’t advocate that as medical practitioners, says Dr. McKay.

Flirty Questions To Ask Your Date That Will Help Reveal If They Are Really Into You
Flirty Questions To Ask Your Date That Will Help Reveal If They Are Really Into You

No first date is exactly the same, but they all tend to suffer similar problems: nerves, avoided kisses and stock standard conversation starters. Even worse? When you try to diverge from the, “So, what do you do?” script you tend to go too far in the opposite direction and ask something horrific (or plain bizarre).

“Do you eat chicken edamame salad often?”.

Suffice to say, whether you have more suitors than DiCaprio or you are tottering into the dating ring for the first time in years, we can all do with a refresher on how to how to walk the line between boring and insane.Judging by the frequency with which the question, “What are the best first date conversation starters for awkward people,” appears on Reddit, it appears a lot of men have the same question.Whack on top of that the oodles of ink the chicas over at Cosmo and Elite Daily have spilled on the topic and it appears “first date conversation starters” is not so much ‘trite’ as ‘misunderstood’ (and in need of a revamp). So, if you are looking for inspiration; look no further. Here are five unique first date conversation starters that will give your date a chance to show whether or not they are really into you.

What’s The Worst Pickup Line You’ve Ever Used?

Along with, “How would you *hypothetically* go about seducing a guy you’re on a date with,” (to be used only if you’re feeling ~vibes~) this is an easy way to make conversation and give them the perfect opening to flirt back. Plus, it will help you stand out from the crowd, as “what’s the worst pick up line anyone has ever used on you” is one of the most over-asked questions ever.

What Do You Secretly Binge On Youtube When No-One Is Around?

Forget the endlessly trotted out, “What are you watching on Netflix at the moment,” and go straight for the guilty pleasure jugular. Who knows: maybe you’ll both have the same taste in cat videos and conspiracy theory documentaries? If not, you can always laugh about it.

What’s Something I Wouldn’t Guess About You?

This is the closest thing to a stock standard question in here — but is still worth remembering as it gives them another great chance to hint they are into you (and respond with something flirtatious of their own). Although — of course — if you’re not feeling the chemistry sing then you might want to dial back your questions accordingly.

What’s The Most Annoying Thing About Tinder?

Want to make it “you two against the world.” Ask this question conspiratorially and you’re up and away.

If You Won The Lottery — & Weren’t Allowed To Give Any To Charity — What Would You Do With The Money?

This is a great, age old question. But without the proviso that you have to be selfish with it, it often falls flat as the respondee feels pressured to give cliche answers like, “Give it to charity” or, “Invest in an NGO.” However, if you specify this is off the cards you will gain more of an insight into their dirtiest, sexiest capitalist fantasies…

Do You Think Instagram Influencers Work Hard & Deserve Their Money?

Is your date a contrarian? Sympathetic? A sceptic? Only this question will tell.

How Long Do You Think That Couple Over There Have Been Going Out?

Feeling the burn and need to divert the conversation away from the two of your innermost desires? This is a great way to kick off a healthy bout of people watching.

Who Is Your Favourite Disney Villain?

Forget the heroes — this will tell you what your date truly values.
