The Next Big Thing In Watches Is… The Colour Purple
The Next Big Thing In Watches Is… The Colour Purple

Colours come and go in and out of fashion when it comes to watches, just like, well, fashion.

Some colours will always be in fashion when it comes to watches: black, silver, gold… Blue watches are also a versatile and popular choice. Recently, green dials have become in vogue – a natural progression from blue, in a sense. But now it seems as if purple’s the next big thing.

On the face of it, purple seems like a strange colour to pick for a watch. It’s a niche colour that’s not often used in mainstream fashion, especially men’s fashion, as it’s hard to pair with other colours and garments.

Yet it makes a lot of sense. Mechanical watches are luxury goods and the colour purple has been associated with royalty, power and wealth for centuries – meaning it’s actually a highly appropriate hue for a luxury item like a watch.

Indeed, the fact that purple is so hard to pair with other colours almost heightens that luxury aspect to the watch. It’s eye-catching; a bit outrageous… And you have to be a real iconoclast (or really wealthy) to be able to splash out on such a niche colour for such an expensive purchase like a luxury watch.

In any case, it’s exciting to see that watchmakers and watch fans are getting more imaginative with watch colours, like purple. Anything that inspires innovation is something to be lauded.

Here are some of the coolest new purple watches on the market from a wide array of watchmakers. Some of these watches don’t just have purple dials, by the way: some also include cases and straps that are purple, too. If you’re gonna go purple, may as well go all the way, hey?

Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding

Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding (ref. 15210OR.OO.A002KB.02)

Let’s start things off with the often-misunderstood Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet. First launched in 2019, the Code 11.59 has had a somewhat mixed reception among watch fans: while it’s good to see AP doing more than just Royal Oaks, the Code 11.59 has been criticised for being too simplistic in its design.

It’s an unfair criticism, as the Code 11.59 is actually deceptively complex. A clever ‘sandwiched’ case design with trick floating lugs; a subtly double-curved sapphire crystal; a design that mixes octagonal design codes from the Royal Oak with rounded elements… It’s a real watch fan’s watch.

The other freeing part about launching a new watch collection is that it’s allowed AP to take more risks – such as with colour. Case in point: this Code 11.59’s 18ct pink gold case is adorned with a smoked purple lacquered dial with sunburst effect and a matching rubber-coated fabric strap: a wild combination.

TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition

TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition (ref. CBL2118.FC6518)

This purple rendition of TAG Heuer’s famous chronograph is easily one of the highest-profile purple watch releases in recent memory, and one that’s got a whole bunch of watch fans thinking differently about purple.

Its unexpected dial colour is actually a subtle nod to the very early Heuer Monaco ref. 1113B and ref. 1533 Calibre 15 of the late ’60s and early 70s. As TAG Heuer explains, these Monacos used a metallic blue dial finish which, over time, has demonstrated a tendency to patinate from blue to a dégradé purple colour, sometimes slightly faded in the centre and darker around the edges.

Mounted on a black alligator strap, it’s beautifully retro and eclectic in all the right ways, oozing with big 70s vibes. This TAG Heuer Monaco is easily one of the best purple watches on the market.

Retail Price: AU$10,400

NOMOS Glashütte Club Campus Blue Purple

NOMOS Glashütte Club Campus Blue Purple (ref. 713)

NOMOS Glashütte is a cool independent watchmaker from Germany that draws inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, one of Germany’s most profound contributions to the world of modern art. Their pieces might be hand-made in Glashütte but they’re designed in Berlin, and it’s easy to see that Berliner influence if you look at one of their watches: NOMOS pieces are clean, minimalist and refined with a consistent and modern aesthetic.

The Club Campus collection is one of NOMOS’ most affordable watch collections, as well as one of its most colourful. Featuring a no-nonsense, highly legible dial with small seconds counter at 6 o’clock, this Club Campus combines a subtle purple dial with blue Super-LumiNova for low-light conditions.

At 36mm in diameter, it’s perfectly suited to both men and women. Despite its modest price, it boasts an in-house, manually-wound movement which promises a 43-hour power reserve and 100m of water resistance. A great choice if you want a respectable purple watch without spending royal amounts of money.

Retail Price: AU$1,870

Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer Purple

Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer Purple 42mm (ref. 441.UL.5820.NR)

The always-eclectic Hublot has never been afraid to experiment with combining bold colours with novel materials and movements, and this Big Bang Unico Summer Purple is a particularly good example of what the brand is capable of.

It features a lightweight aluminium case with an anodised, polished and satin finish in a distinctive pastel purple shade that not only looks amazing but actually protects the case from scratches and damage. Virtually every element (except the movement) of the watch is purple, from the chrono pushers and strap to the indices, hands and numerals.

Available on either a leather-backed fabric and Velcro strap or a solid rubber one with a titanium clasp (which can both be switched out easily thanks to the watch’s button-actuated quick-change system), it’s hard to find a more purple watch than this Hublot.

Retail Price: AU$30,700

Urwerk UR-100V Ultraviolet

Urwerk UR-100V Ultraviolet

If you thought that Hublot was high-tech, just check out this Urwerk. The UR-100V Ultraviolet takes the already eye-catching and space-age UR-100 and its astonishing planetary movement and dials the ridiculous up to 11 by dousing the watch’s case and movement in violet.

Essentially, each of the three hour-depicting ‘satellites’ work as retrograde minute hands as they make their way across the bottom of the dial. As one satellite makes its way past 60 minutes, the next satellite takes over minute duties. Then, once the 60th minute has been reached, the minutes hand vanishes and reappears as a kilometre counter, illustrating the 555 kilometres travelled every 20 minutes by every inhabitant of planet Earth. Spacey stuff.

Urwerk explains that the colour choice was inspired by the outfits of superheroes and villains like Hawkeye, The Phantom and The Joker (funnily enough, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. is one of Urwerk’s biggest fans). Indeed, this is exactly the sort of watch we’d imagine a superhero would wear – but you might need Batman money to afford it…

Retail Price: AU$82,590

anOrdain Model 1 Plum Fumé

anOrdain Model 1 Plum Fumé

From high-tech to artisinal: anOrdian is an independent Scottish watchmaker that’s become famed for their hand-made enamel dials. Outside of Switzerland and Japan, anOrdain are one of the only watchmakers in the world producing enamel dials in-house – a testament to these Glaswegian’s skills.

This Model 1 is particularly special as anOrdain are the first and only watchmakers to create a fumé dial realised in enamel. The richness of this model’s purple dial is particularly special; like a rich wine or a precious garnet, this is one purple watch that’s totally mesmerising to look at.

You might think this all means it’ll set you back a pretty penny, yet it’s not outrageously expensive. If you’re looking for a watch that’s different from all the rest, we can’t think of a better candidate.

Retail Price: AU$4,165

Swatch x Dragon Ball Z ‘Gohan’

Swatch x Dragon Ball Z ‘Gohan’ (ref. SUOZ345)

For something a bit different yet still very purple, check out the new Swatch x Dragon Ball Z ‘Gohan’. Part of a collaborative capsule between the famous watch brand and the legendary anime series, each watch in the collection references one of the most popular characters from the long-running show – in this case, Gohan, the son of the main character Goku.

Each watch in the collection features its own aesthetic touches, but Gohan’s might have the coolest feature of them all. Not only is the watch decked out in purple (in reference to Gohan’s purple gi) but the lightning motifs on the strap are glow-in-the-dark. Additionally, the hands are shaped like purple lightning bolts and the dial’s acrylic crystal references the famous ‘Kamehameha’ attack used by heroes in the show.

If you’re looking for a dose of wearable nostalgia – or just want a fun purple watch that won’t break the bank – we can’t think of a better option.

Retail Price: AU$150

King Seiko Gradient Purple

King Seiko Gradient Purple (ref. SPB291J1)

Capping off this list of the best purple watches to buy, we’ve got the King Seiko Gradient Purple. King Seiko is an interesting brand, and one that was dormant for many years until it was revived earlier this year, to the delight of watch fans.

King Seiko fits in between Seiko and Grand Seiko in terms of quality and price (although it’s much closer to the former than the latter in that sense). Made in Japan and featuring a distinct 60s aesthetic, the modern King Seikos are for aficionados and iconoclasts.

This model’s mauve dial only adds to the retro appeal. Light and refined, it’s quintessentially Japanese and offers a playful contrast to the business-like and angular case of this reference.

28 Stylish Men’s Golf Shirts For Fairway Swag [2022]
28 Stylish Men’s Golf Shirts For Fairway Swag [2022]

The emergence of the golf shirt as we know it now, came about when the game was starting to loosen up a bit and allow more casual clothing to be worn, even during competitions.

In comes the polo shirt, a staple of tennis for many years before it was ever seen on the green, and evolved to fit golfers and adjust to the range of movements that were specific to their game.

What To Look For In A Quality Golf Shirt

Golf shirts became stretchier, meaning the sleeves wouldn’t ride up while taking a swing, and because golfers are sometimes out on the course for hours, they needed a shirt that was breathable as well.

All modern golf shirts come with some form of ventilation, whether it’s perforated panels or lightweight fabrics, they are built to endure the pressure of high performance so you feel as fresh at the end of your round, as when you stepped up to the first tee.

Brands such as Under Armour and Puma are using cutting-edge science to weave technology into their fabrics to keep you safe in the sun and keep you dry at the same time.

Sportswear companies like Peak Performance bring their extensive knowledge from other sports to create high-performing and adaptive shirts, and others such as Adidas and Ralph Lauren bring a style that is modern but without sacrificing the classic styles of old.

We’ve put together a carefully curated list of the brands producing the best golf shirts for men right now. So fix up, look sharp and go dominate the green.

5 Shows Like Rick and Morty To Watch Before Season 6 Drops
5 Shows Like Rick and Morty To Watch Before Season 6 Drops

It’s finally happening; Season 6 of Rick and Morty is dropping on Netflix on September 4th. Although, it’s just the first episode that’s getting released and then all remaining episodes will be released weekly.

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been rewatching Seasons 1-5 of Rick and Morty in anticipation of the new season and can’t wait. But if you’re wanting something to fill the void during the week while you wait for each new Rick and Morty episode to hit Netflix, you’re in luck.

Here are five awesome shows that are extremely similar to Rick and Morty; Rick Sanchez himself would watch these shows and the man’s got access to Interdimensional Cable…

BoJack Horseman

Bojack looking bleak. Image Credit: Vox

8.8 IMDb score, stars Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie & Aaron Paul, Animation, Comedy & Drama, released in 2014, 6 seasons

This animated series is extremely similar to Rick and Morty because both regularly deal with dark and serious subject matters with humour. Plus, the titular character BoJack Horseman is quite nihilistic just like Rick.

If it’s the bleaker moments or the black comedic moments from Rick and Morty that you like, BoJack Horseman is the show for you.

Community

Community cast. Image Credit: IMDb

8.5 IMDb score, stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, Gillian Jacobs & Alison Brie, Comedy, released in 2009, 6 seasons

Community is an extremely underrated comedy series that was created by Dan Harmon, the same man who co-created Rick and Morty. The show follows Jeff Winger, a lawyer who is enforced to go back to community college to earn his degree. There, he meets an eccentric bunch and they form a study group.

Filled with the same type of absurd humour and wacky characters, Rick and Morty fans will love Community.

Final Space

Like Rick & Morty? You’ll like these guys too. Image Credit: Wired

8.2 IMDb score, stars Fred Armisen, Tom Kenny, Olan Rogers & David Tennant, Animation, Comedy & Adventure, released in 2018, 3 seasons

Rick and Morty regularly features goofy humour and space adventures; if that’s what you love about Rick and Morty, then we highly recommend Final Space. The series follows Gary, an imprisoned man who befriends a mysterious alien, who he dubs Mooncake.

Hilarious but surprisingly poignant at times, Final Space is a must-watch series.

The Simpsons

Recognise this crew? Nah, us neither… Image Credit: The New York Times

8.7 IMDb score, stars Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright & Harry Shearer, Animation & Comedy, released in 1989, 33 seasons

Okay, okay hear us out. Rick and Morty essentially boils down to the adventures dysfunctional Smith family. And The Simpsons are the OG dysfunctional family. Plus, the earlier seasons of the classic show seriously hold up.

Although, we highly recommend tapping out after Season 9 or 10 because that’s when the quality begins to dip.

Solar Opposites

Same (co)creator, similar giggles. Image Credit: IMDb

8.0 IMDb score, stars Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch & Sean Giambrone, Animation, Comedy & Sci-Fi, released in 2020, 3 seasons

Solar Opposites was co-created by Justin Roiland, who co-created Rick and Morty and voices both titular characters. With an extremely similar feel and animation style, Solar Opposites feels like a really long Interdimensional Cable skit from Rick and Morty.

Honestly, if you love Rick and Morty, you’ll also love Solar Opposites.

Brad Pitt’s Style Revolution Is The Best We’ve Seen In 2022
Brad Pitt’s Style Revolution Is The Best We’ve Seen In 2022

Celebrities spend an inordinate amount of time fussing over fashion – but it’s when they stop giving a f*ck and start dressing however they want that we start to see real magic happen. Case in point: Brad Pitt.

The 58-year-old (who, criminally, has only ever won two Oscars) is ageing like a fine wine. He’s always been one of Hollywood’s most stylish leading men, but it seems that he’s finally embraced his status as one of the entertainment industry’s most powerful figures to pioneer an extremely powerful new personal aesthetic.

He’s currently been on a tear across the world promoting his latest film, the raucous ensemble cast action-comedy Bullet Train, during which he’s consistently shown up his co-stars thanks to his unique take on fashion.

Maybe it’s because of the hectic pace of this promo tour but Pitt’s been rocking some super comfy yet rather slick outfits which are helping shift the norm for what’s acceptable red carpet attire – in a good way.

We break down Brad Pitt’s new style direction and what pointers you can take from it and integrate into your own wardrobe (as well as elements you might want to avoid).

Slacker Suits

Drawstrings and denim: Brad Pitt loves a relaxed suiting look.

Something we’ve seen over the last two years (perhaps thanks to COVID) is that the sort of outfits actors are wearing to promotional events and on red carpets for films have become far more varied and far more casual.

Brad’s clearly taken note because at virtually every promo event for Bullet Train, he’s worn some sort of casual tailored suit. Well, we say tailored inasmuch as they seem to be custom made, but they’re actually consistently pretty loose-fitting and the trousers feature drawstring closes. It almost appears as if he’s freeballing, but we won’t speculate. You can be the judge of that…

Getting Skirty

Feeling the breeze in Berlin.

The fashion item Brad Pitt’s worn that’s got the most attention lately was the brown linen skirt he wore to the Berlin stop of the Bullet Train press tour, which he paired with a brown linen jacket, pink linen shirt, tortoiseshell sunglasses and biker boots.

Brad’s just the latest in a growing number of high-profile male celebrities who’ve embraced the whole men wearing skirts trend. Other proponents of the look include musicians like Harry Styles, Kid Cudi and Lil Nas X; comedians like Dan Levy and Pete Davidson; and athletes like Harry GarsideLewis Hamilton and Russell Westbrook.

Actually, Brad’s got form when it comes to wearing women’s clothes, famously posing for Rolling Stone in the 90s in a range of wild dresses.

Boiling Up

Brad Pitt arrives in Kyoto rocking a boiler suit.

From slacker suits to boiler suits: Brad was also spotted wearing a grey boiler suit whilst in Japan, a rather no-nonsense garment that rather contrasted with the platinum $US39,990 Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition (ref. LB0920131C1X1) on his wrist.

Some might argue that the optics of one of the highest-paid film stars on the planet wearing a garment associated with blue-collar workers might be a bit on the nose… We reckon it’s a good look and one that Brad pulls off effortlessly. As we said, once you stop giving a f*ck, magic happens.

All Day I Dream About Sneakers

A small glimpse at just a small part of Brad Pitt’s Adidas Gazelle collection.

Finally, it looks like Brad is totally obsessed with a specific sneaker – namely, the Adidas Gazelle. One of the German sportswear brand’s most enduring sneaker styles, the retro training sneaker has had somewhat of a renaissance in recent years, after previously being in vogue during the 90s.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen Brad Pitt wear multiple, different-coloured Gazelles: some red ones, some green ones and even some yellow ones. He’s also rocked a few Adidas slip-ons, too. Maybe he just loves Adidas?

We kind of back his one-man revival of the Gazelle and there’s much to be said about taking a specific sneaker and making it your signature look… But for us mere mortals who don’t have an endless bank account, we wouldn’t recommend following Brad’s lead and only wearing one type of sneaker.

Who Is Beer Girl? The U.S. Open Beer-Chugging Sensation
Who Is Beer Girl? The U.S. Open Beer-Chugging Sensation

It doesn’t have to take much to become an instant social media viral sensation, as Megan Lucky has found out. The American girl – who recently spent some time in Australia, going by her Instagram account – was first spotted at the 2021 U.S. Open, when live broadcast cameras picked her out in the crowd.

Seizing her moment, Megan grabbed her boyfriend’s beer and chugged it (drank it all in one go) to rapturous applause from the crowd.

WATCH: “Beer Girl” Megan Lucky Chugs A Beer At The 2021 and 2022 U.S. Open Tournaments

At the time, nobody knew what her real name was, so she was given the simple online nickname of “Beer Girl.”

But, Megan has returned to her beer-chugging ways one year on, and she was once again spotted at the 2022 U.S. Open. Living up to her newfound moniker, grabbed her boyfriend’s beer once more and downed it in one. This year, the internet detectives have finally been able to determine “Beer Girl’s” real name, which turns out to be Megan Lucky.

A clip of Megan performing the feat for a second year in a row is now going viral on social media and has even been shared by the official U.S. Open Twitter account. The video is actually a compilation, stitching together a clip of her effort in 2022, followed by the original clip from 2021 that catapulted her into social media stardom.

Initially, the 2022 clip wasn’t shared immediately following Megan necked her pint, as it occurred on the same evening Serena Williams played final ever tennis match, after she lost to Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanović. Understandably, content relating to Serena Williams’ glittering career was deemed to be more important than Megan’s beer-swilling.

But, following a post Megan herself made on her Instagram account, coupled with comments from fans, the U.S. Open eventually released the clip. The account added the caption, “It seems this is becoming tradition at this point.” Already, many fans have commented on Megan’s Instagram post asking her to make it three chugs of a beer in a row, and attend the 2023 U.S. Open.

Selected comments include,

“Pure Legend Serena also very good.”

“Defending Champ! Let’s go for three peat.”

and,

“Omg it was you on TV! Tennis and America love you.”

Not much else is known about Megan in her personal life, other than she has a boyfriend, Andrew Dillinger, whom she has been with since at least May 2020, and loves to travel. Since identifying her, her Instagram account following has increased to just under 30,000 followers (at the time of writing) and we can only expect that number to grow.

Several images on Megan’s Instagram account show her in various locations around the world, including Spain, Australia and France.

The Stunning ‘Venice Alternative’ Few Tourists Know About
The Stunning ‘Venice Alternative’ Few Tourists Know About

Sick of turnstiles, cruise ship hordes and inflated prices? Never fear; there’s a Venice alternative just a couple of hours east that you can head to instead.

Venice is often thought of as the be all and end all of Italy. Yes: the Amalfi Coast might be pretty, Positano might be photogenic, and Rome might be home to some famous old dude. But Venice is iconic. For that reason, it has been its own worst enemy, with its attraction proving fatal to any hopes you might have had of a laid-back holiday.

Some argue the whole city now feels like a glorified museum, what with all the new entry fees and turnstiles. On top of that, it has had problems with cruise ship tourism for some time, is (still) sinking, and gets hideously overcrowded every summer.

In light of this, TikTok user whatviceats (an Italian living in London) has posted a video suggesting an alternative to Venice. She says Trieste is much more chill, explaining: “We all know and love Venice and we all know how hot and crowded it gets in the summer.”

“Less than two hours away from Venice there is another beautiful city sitting on the waterfront and that is Trieste. Trieste sits in Italy but it’s also close to Croatia, Slovenia and it was occupied by the Austria-Hungarian empire. For this reason the architecture is mostly neoclassical.”

Trieste canal. Image Credit: Getty Images.

“It is also the coffee capital of Italy. It is said that the people of Trieste drink twice as much coffee as the average Italian which is a lot of coffee. Trieste is such a unique city and it has so much history and culture castles museums to offer I would highly recommend visiting.”

“I’ve been to both places, and I agree 100%,” one social media user commented.

WATCH: Italian Reveals Awesome ‘Venice Alternative’

Whatviceats isn’t the only one to recommend Trieste as an alternative or an accompaniment to Venice. The Spectator wrote in 2021: “Many visitors head to Italy for Venice alone but they miss a trick by foregoing the beautiful nearby port town of Trieste – beloved by Italian holiday makers and yet untouched by Brits.”

“With the Venetian authorities rumoured to be considering turnstiles on the periphery of Venice, Italy’s most iconic city increasingly feels like a museum. And so, for those left hankering for a slice of living, breathing Italian culture, Trieste is the perfect tonic.”

The Spectator

The Spectator also described Trieste’s hotels as “grand but relatively inexpensive” and spoke highly of Trieste as a melting pot of culture (“the city is a beautiful, culturally diverse intersection between Europe’s East and Western blocs, in a crook of terrain near Slovenia and Austria”).

The Spectator added: “Its treasures are evenly divided between the ancient (the Roman Theatre in the centre is one impressive instance) and the more modern, with particularly strong 18th, 19th and early 20th century gems, including the palace-laden Piazza Unita D’Italia, Europe’s largest seaside square; the enormous, beautiful synagogue (built in 1908); the stunning, pillared commodity exchange, founded by Empress Maria Teresa in 1755, and the world-class Revoltella art gallery.”

Not everyone thinks Trieste is anywhere near as good as Venice, however. In the comments on whatviceats’ video, one TikTok user wrote: “Well but one can’t compare Trieste and Venice, two completely different things… I would always choose Venice over Trieste I must admit.” Another said: “Trieste doesn’t have the biennale.”

Over on Quora, May Wallace, a US expat in Italy, said Venice and Trieste are totally different cities which are “not even similar.”

“Venice/La Serenissima is an island, man-made and full of history and amazing ancient buildings, beautiful main canals and many sleepy back canals, no cars, lots of boats and can be so quiet you always hear laughter and birds singing (And the silly gondoliers),” Wallace wrote.

“It is connected to the mainland by a causeway that you can drive and immediately park or by a train that ends in the train station. From there you are on foot or in a boat to get around. There are wonderful hotels both medium priced and high priced. There are great restaurants and some terrible tourist eateries. There are lovely boat trips out to the nearby islands of Murano known for glass blowing and Burano known for Lace making and Torcello known for the ruins of a church. There are museums and seemingly always concerts available.”

RELATED: Positano Is Dead: This Little-Known Town Is Way Cooler

“Trieste on the other hand is a coastal city with enormous traffic and a not very Italian feel to it at all in that it has Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences and was dominated by the Germans as an important deep water port during WWII.”

She added: “There are a few museums and a nice beach to the north. There are some wonderful Villas to tour and a Cave system that is fascinating. The food verges on a strange mix of Italo-German and was on the whole excellent and hearing German or Slav languages is common. Basically it’s a big working city with very little left of the antique architecture that seems to draw people to Italy. The main piazza on the port is grand and lovely.”

“Venice is best given at least 4+days to get the feel of this amazing other-worldly place. I’ve returned countless times and it never gets old. Trieste, 2 days tops and I was ready to move on.”

May Wallace

There you have it. Take your ‘Venice alternative’ recommendations with a grain of salt. But still: given how crowded Venice is getting, we’d say you should at least give them some consideration.

‘In 30 Years, Society Will Look At Alcohol Like We Look At Tobacco Today’
‘In 30 Years, Society Will Look At Alcohol Like We Look At Tobacco Today’

A viral Tweet has us questioning whether alcohol consumption rates will fall drastically in the coming years just like smoking tobacco did.

Alcohol is ingrained in our culture; most of us kick back with a beer or glass of wine after work or treat ourselves to lavish cocktails on the weekends. It’s a societal norm. But there was a time when cigarettes were a social norm too.

Of course, some people still smoke tobacco today but it’s not as popular as it was a few decades ago. In fact, smoking was pretty popular up until the early 2000s (when most Western countries banned smoking in enclosed public areas, like bars and restaurants) despite the US Surgeon General announcing that smoking caused lung cancer and other major health issues in 1964.

Yes, it took the general public over thirty years to stop smoking even though we knew it was extremely harmful. Flash forward to today and we know that alcohol isn’t all that healthy for us and yet we still regularly drink up.

But will there come a time when alcohol falls by the wayside just like cigarettes did?

Rex Woodbury, Partner at Index Ventures (a venture capital firm), certainly thinks so. Woodbury took to Twitter and wrote, “I honestly think in 30 years society will look at alcohol like we look at tobacco today. You can already see it starting – Gen Z consumes 20% less alcohol than Millennials did at the same age.”

Smoking has become extremely unpopular in recent years; especially among younger generations. Will alcohol suffer the same fate? Image Credit: AFP

We’re not sure where Woodbury got that statistic from, but his Tweet certainly is thought-provoking. So much so, that it instantly went viral with hundreds commenting whether they agreed or not about Gen Z potentially phasing out alcohol like Gen Xers and Millenials began phasing out cigarettes.

Many did agree with Woodbury and replied that alcohol consumption rates have definitely dropped in the younger generation. Twitter user @SnarkyGenerally wrote, “My 23 yr old (who lives in NYC) and his friends go out to bars, half of them don’t drink. Those that do certainly don’t drink like my friends did at that age. It’s about being social and they don’t need alcohol for that.”

Although some suggested that Gen Z don’t drink as much alcohol because they prefer drugs. One Twitter user wrote, “Higher pot usage is the reason,” while another commented, “That’s because they all eat edibles, take fentanyl, or shrooms.”

A few disagreed completely and argued that alcohol isn’t as detrimental to health as cigarettes are. For example, Twitter user @MichaelTant3 replied, “I only disagree because there are ways to drink alcohol mindfully and intentionally and in ways that elevate community and familial experiences. There are no such ways to enjoy cigarettes.”

As for us, we’re not sure whether alcohol will be phased out or universally regarded as ‘bad’ anytime soon; recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that less than 6% of Australians suffering from mental health issues were willing to cut out alcohol even though it would improve their mental state…

If that’s not an indication of society’s current relationship with alcohol, we don’t know what is. Nor do we know what future generations will think of alcohol consumption; alas, only time will tell.

US Open Prize Money 2022: How Much Will Winners Get?
US Open Prize Money 2022: How Much Will Winners Get?

The US Open is the final Grand Slam tennis tournament on the annual tennis calendar, and so marks the last opportunity for the world’s best tennis players to take home some considerable prize money winnings.

The US Open tennis tournament kicked off on Monday 29th August and will run until Sunday 11th September, when the men’s final will take place in the Arthur Ashe stadium.

Prize money for the 2022 US Open has now been confirmed, and will top more than $60 million for the first time in the tournament’s history, and a good $20 million more than the Wimbledon prize money on offer earlier in the year.

As with the other major tennis Grand Slams, both the men’s and women’s singles winner will receive the same prize money purse of $2,600,000 each (a 4% increase over 2021’s prize money) and anyone who goes out in the very first round will still take home a rather significant $80,000 (a 6.67% increase over 2021).
