Airbnb’s ‘WFH Forever’ Policy Puts Way Too Much Trust In Employees
Airbnb’s ‘WFH Forever’ Policy Puts Way Too Much Trust In Employees

While Google and Microsoft entice employees back to the office with fried chicken and wine tastings, Airbnb has said its employees can keep the sweatpant lifestyle indefinitely.

But most modern-day workers are used to being micromanaged, not cut adrift. So how are changes like these going to affect performance in the long term?

Well, that’s the big question (and the question that started getting bandied about on Twitter) after Airbnb announced it had scrapped its ‘return to office by September 2022’ plan in lieu of a ‘work from home forever’ (if you like) policy.

Some, though mildly flabbergasted, massively backed it. One wrote on Twitter: “Like it! Much more sustainable, if the company structure allows it. I never understood why I had to sit in my car for 3 hours a day to do something in an office I can do from home.”

Others made remarks like: “It’s the future” and “how sensible.”

Others, however, claimed such a policy puts way too much faith in human industriousness. As another Twitter user wrote: “No one… can believe that an absentee workforce is going to work on the honour system and that performance won’t suffer.”

Another said: “I won’t be buying any company stock.”

The Airbnb CEO said the flexible work policy (under the scheme employees can work from home, or anywhere within the country, without a reduction in pay) would help with talent recruitment (and maintenance), pointing out that commute workforces limit themselves to the talent pool nearby (or the talent pool willing to commute) rather than simply all the talented people in the world or country.

The move might also be designed to bring attention to Airbnb’s Live Anywhere program, a yearlong initiative that gave 12 people the chance to travel the world while working from Airbnbs. Airbnb is also a proponent of the work while you travel phenomenon, and would want to be seen as supportive of such communities as digital nomads. So from that perspective, the move makes sense, too.

Though we definitely think working from home forever puts a little too much trust in employees, perhaps it’s better to trust your employees a little too much rather than a little too little.

Only time (and the timesheets) of forward-thinking companies like Airbnb will tell. Here’s hoping though that during this era of freelancing and the work from home revolution companies find a healthy, productive middle ground that fosters a better ‘standard culture’ for the future.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness May Be The Best Marvel Movie To Date
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness May Be The Best Marvel Movie To Date

I think it’s fairly safe to say that anyone who considers themselves a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan, has extremely high expectations of the twenty-eighth film in the MCU – the Doctor Strange sequel. I certainly did.

After Loki, What If…? and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the multiverse has irrevocably been established in the MCU; and with a title like ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, I was expecting insane cameos, explorations of dimensions we haven’t seen yet and just non-stop awesomeness… No easy feat for a two-hour-long film.

However, Doctor Strange 2 didn’t just meet my expectations; it exceeded them. Fast-paced from the get-go, with an interesting but non-convoluted plot, stunning visuals, action-packed fight scenes and incredible acting performances; I have nothing but praise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Elizabeth Olsen is the clear stand out in the film; her performance as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlett Witch is flawless. She’s extremely compelling whenever she’s onscreen; her every movement and inflection has been carefully orchestrated to invoke audiences to feel what her character’s feeling.

Plus, because her performance is so nuanced – and not over the top – you can truly believe Wanda is a real person and not a fictional comic book character; you know, aside from the fact that she has insane witchcraft power.

That’s not to say that the rest of the cast doesn’t deliver; Benedict Cumberbatch is spectacular as Doctor Stephen Strange and the chemistry between him and Benedict Wong, who plays Wong, is fantastic; the instances of banter between their respective characters are some of the funniest moments in the film.

Newcomer Xochitl Gomez is very enjoyable as America Chavez and Rachel McAdams is always a delight, no matter what film she’s in, and Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness is no exception.

There are cameos in the film that made me audibly gasp and whoop but I obviously won’t spoil them and rob you of those satisfying moments… However, get to the cinema sooner rather than later because I’m sure these surprise appearances will leak ASAP.

You can tell Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was directed by Sam Raimi as his filmmaking trademarks are well and truly present – fade & whip cuts, the blending of genres by having both comedic moments & jump scares in the same film and a colourful and bright comic book aesthetic. But all of these really work and actually enhance Doctor Strange 2.

The score by Danny Elfman is exceptional; grandiose and inspiring just when it needs to be. But there are also tracks that are heartbreakingly beautiful and others that are wonderfully eerie.

If I had to give one criticism, there are a few lines of dialogue – maybe two or three tops – that are slightly awkward (one that springs to mind is McAdams’ character makes a quip that doesn’t quite land near the end of the film; but it’s not because of McAdams’ delivery, it’s because the quip is just lamely written) but otherwise, Michael Waldron’s script is rather good.

I genuinely think every MCU fan will love Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; it’s definitely one of the best MCU films to date.

But I also think casual MCU viewers or even those who are not super well-versed in MCU lore will enjoy this film too (although there will obviously be some plot points that go over their heads entirely). Therefore, I’ve got to give the Doctor Strange sequel a well-earned 9/10, but don’t just take my word for it. Treat yourself and go see it as soon as you can!

Australian Sailor Tom Slingsby Signs For American Magic
Australian Sailor Tom Slingsby Signs For American Magic

Clive Palmer or Gina Rinehart needs to pony up and put an America’s Cup syndicate together or something. Why? Because we don’t have an entrant to the 37th America’s Cup, and so some of our best sailors have signed with an American crew.

That’s right: Australian sailor (and world sailor of the year) Tom Slingsby has signed with American Magic for Barcelona 2024. Slingsby, who is a former America’s Cup winner, has signed for American Magic in what has been described as a “major coup.”

Slingsby is considered one of the most talented helmsmen and tacticians in the world, having won Olympic Gold in the Laser class, the 2013 America’s Cup (with Oracle Team USA), multiple World Championships, and back-to-back victories in SailGP (with Australia).

American Magic now looks like a really strong team, comprising of such big names as Terry Hutchinson (an eleven-time world champion in the Corel 45, J/24, TP 52, Farr 40 and IMS classes, and a winning tactician of the Louis Vuitton Cup), British Olympian Paul Goodison and Tom Burnham (who has sailed on three America’s Cup teams and is the current coach for Australia’s SailGP team).

Slingsby holds a United States passport, enabling him to qualify under the strict nationality rules of the prestigious competition.

Slingsby led the Australian team to commanding wins in the first two seasons of SailGP, which was sailed in foiling catamarans.

His comfort in foiling catamarans, combined with American Magic’s retention of Paul Goodison, gives this America’s Cup team the option of “twin helming” for Barcelona 2024 (if they go for that design).

American Magic team principal Hap Fauth has said of the signing: “Having Tom and Paul Goodison, both Olympic gold medalists and world champions, driving our AC75 gives us a great competitive position.”

“They are fierce competitors who win at the highest level of sailing. Combine this with the world-class team we are building, and I am thrilled with our prospects.”

Slingsby has said: “I’m extremely excited to return to the America’s Cup arena. The AC75s are remarkable craft, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help our team in their quest to bring the trophy back to the United States and the New York Yacht Club. We’ve got world-class talent on board the boat and backing us on the shore, I’m proud and excited to be a part of it.”

Slingsby has also spoken out against the passport rules.

He told Yachting World last year: “If they’ve only got four entries in the America’s Cup, that means if you’re not part of one of those four countries, you can’t compete. And I just think that’s not fair.”

“If you’re from anywhere in the world – Australia, Brazil, Uruguay, anywhere – and you’re an unbelievable sailor, you should have the opportunity to compete in the America’s Cup. If you’re from France or Austria and you’re one of the top sailors in the world you should get that chance.”

Tom Slingsby

Stuff reports that Slingsby will “continue with his Australian SailGP program and look to join American Magic in Pensacola, Florida for their summer training.”

Keanu Reeves Was ‘Forced’ To Do The Worst Film Of His Career, He Claims
Keanu Reeves Was ‘Forced’ To Do The Worst Film Of His Career, He Claims

Keanu Reeves is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors and has played some truly iconic roles.

From Neo in The Matrix franchise to the titular character in the John Wick films; from Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure to a new secret role in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film… Reeves has had a rather impressive career.

However, everyone – Reeves included – has something they regret doing; in Reeves’ case, it was the 2000 film The Watcher. Reeves starred opposite James Spader as David Allen Griffin – a serial killer.

Upon the film’s release, it received disastrous reviews and has not become a ‘cult classic’ over the years; meaning today in 2022, it’s still considered a sub-par film. Currently, The Watcher has only an 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is described as a film “short on thrills, suspense, and believability”. Ouch.

Reeves is well aware that the film isn’t great; in fact, he never wanted to do it in the first place. He actually claims he was forced into it.

According to Far Out Magazine, Reeves was unimpressed with The Watcher’s script and was going to pass on it; that is until a friend got involved.

“I never found the script interesting, but a friend of mine forged my signature on the agreement. I couldn’t prove he did and I didn’t want to get sued, so I had no other choice but to do the film.”

Reeves eventually worked out a deal with Universal, the studio that produced The Watcher; his salary was slightly increased and he only had to do minimal promotion for the film. But Reeves did have to stay silent about the forgery for a full twelve months after the film was released.

Thankfully, Reeves’ career wasn’t tarnished by The Watcher; otherwise, we may have never gotten the iconic film that is John Wick

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce Roasts Karl Stefanovic For Being A First Class Diva
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce Roasts Karl Stefanovic For Being A First Class Diva

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has roasted news anchor Karl Stefanovic for his love of travelling first class.

The good-natured jibe was prompted after Joyce appeared on TODAY to talk about Qantas’ latest Project Sunrise announcement (direct flights to London and New York from Sydney, starting in 2025).

Karl kicked things off by joking: “20 hours stuck in a plane with my 2 year old… are you trying to kill me?”

Joyce responded: “Well Karl, this will be the most luxurious aircraft we’ve ever put in the air, we’ll have only 238 seats on it compared to Qatar… to Cathay… with the same aircraft but over a hundred more seats and what we have for you, Karl – because I know you’re exclusively travelling first class – is the first class cabin will have its own bed, will have its own seat, will have its own wardrobe.”

“The only thing that’s missing is its own dunny mate,” Joyce quipped.

Move over Conor McGregor; it seems someone else has taken the ‘fastest on their feet’ mantle for 2022.

Best Johnny Depp Movies And Where To Watch Them
Best Johnny Depp Movies And Where To Watch Them

Oscar-nominee Johnny Depp has starred in multiple films and television series during his impressive career. Of course, the actor hasn’t been in anything major since 2020 due to the controversy surrounding him and his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp was essentially fired from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which fans called bloody hypocritical, and has since been preparing – most likely on his private island – for the defamation trial that’s now well underway in the US.

Whether you’ve been religiously keeping up to date with trial or you’re sick of hearing about it, you can’t deny that hearing Depp’s name pop up repeatedly in the media makes you want to revisit some of the films he’s been in; some are simply fantastic and well-worth watching…

So, we’ve rounded up the best Johnny Depp films, as well as where you can watch them.

Blow

7.5 IMDb score, stars Jonny Depp & Penélope Cruz, Biography, Crime & Drama, released in 2001

Based on a true story, Depp plays George Jung – the man who, along with the Medellin Cartel, introduced cocaine to America. Set in the 1970s and starring alongside Penélope Cruz, Depp gives a simply sensational performance.

Is Blow the best film ever made? No. But it’s seriously entertaining from start to finish and Depp skillfully forces audiences to be sympathetic to his character – a criminal drug dealer – which highlights his talent as an actor.

Where To Watch: Netflix Australia.

Edward Scissorhands

7.9 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp & Winona Ryder, Drama, Fantasy & Romance, released in 1990

I’d argue there’s no better combination than Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Edward Scissorhands was the first time the two worked together and the result was a cult classic film. Depp plays the titular character, an artificial man whose creator died before giving him hands.

Edward Scissorhands instead, as his name suggests, has scissors for hands and lived in solitude after his creator’s death. However, after a kind lady discovers Edward, she introduces him to her world… A beautiful story and a moving performance from Depp in a wonderfully creepy film. What more could you want?

Where To Watch: Disney+ & Foxtel Now.

Finding Neverland

7.7 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet & Dustin Hoffman, Biography, Drama & Family, released in 2004

Set in London in the early 1900s, Finding Neverland tells the story of author Sir J.M. Barrie and his friendship with the family who inspired him to write Peter Pan. Depp stars opposite Kate Winslet as J.M. Barrie and was rightly nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his work in this film.

Any adult who was a fan of Peter Pan in their youth will love Finding Neverland for its moving story, beautiful cinematography and, of course, Depp’s flawless performance.

Where To Watch: Stan.

Pirates of the Caribbean

8.0 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley & Geoffrey Rush, Action, Adventure & Fantasy, released in 2003

I think it’d be a crime to list Depp’s best movies and not mention the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Captain Jack Sparrow is iconic. And the character is iconic because of Depp. The first Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl, is, of course, the best but Depp’s performance in all five films is outstanding.

Depp is hilarious and charming as Captain Sparrow, and with excellent cast members like Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, one of the best scores of all time and stunning direction and cinematography, you’ll be nothing but entertained when watching these action-packed pirate films.

Where To Watch: Disney+.

Sleepy Hollow

7.3 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp & Christina Ricci, Fantasy, Horror & Mystery, released in 1999

Another film where Depp and director Tim Burton teamed up, Sleepy Hollow is set in 1799 and Depp plays a young detective, Ichabod Crane. Crane is sent to the small town Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of murders involving decapitation and is led to the legend of The Headless Horsemen.

Sleepy Hollow is eerily beautiful – one of Burton’s trademarks – with great visuals and a thrilling plot. However, it’s Depp who steals the show with his charming performance.

Where To Watch: Stan.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

7.3 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter & Alan Rickman, Drama, Horror & Musical, released in 2007

Sure, not everyone is a fan of musicals but Sweeney Todd is not your average musical. It’s not all sequins and campiness to the extreme, like most musicals; in fact, Sweney Todd tells the story of a murderous barber who hides his victims’ bodies by allowing his accomplice Mrs Lovett to bake them into meat pies.

This film expertly blurs the lines between the musical and horror genres and Depp’s performance – for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards – makes Sweney Todd a must-watch; even for those who despise musicals.

Where To Watch: Available to rent or buy on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, the Microsoft Store and YouTube.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

7.7 IMDb score, stars Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio & Juliette Lewis, Drama, released in 1993

For those who have seen it, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is closely associated with introducing the world to Leonardo DiCaprio. Perhaps you’ve heard of him? While yes, DiCaprio’s Oscar-nominated performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is phenomenal, Depp also gave a superb performance.

The plot of the film follows Gilbert Grape, played by Depp, a young man living in a small town who struggles while caring for his disabled brother – DiCaprio – and morbidly obese mother. Overall, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a great feel-good movie, well worth your time.

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video.

New Aviation Laws Spark ‘Furry’ Debate In Australia
New Aviation Laws Spark ‘Furry’ Debate In Australia

Australians are divided on whether or not we should allow pets to fly with us up in the cabin. Representing our different lines of thinking on this perfectly is the discussion under a recent ABC Perth Instagram post.

The ABC pointed out that The Civil Aviation Safety Authorities’ rules changed in December, meaning that technically, you could be sitting pretty up in the air with your pooch, right now, if you liked… if only airlines would let you.

While none of Australia’s major airlines have allowed passengers to do this yet (and there are no signs that any of them will any time soon), a great many Australians wish they would.

Images via Instagram

This group is matched by a great many other Australians, who fear that such a decision would spark allergies, cause fights between pets and introduce bad smells into the plane.

One Instagram user said they’d be “more inclined to travel” if they could take their dog with them. Another said they are allergic to dog hair and so would not be in support of pets in the cabin.

Images via Instagram

Others suggested it be trialled “on certain flights,” or that airlines introduce “pet friendly flights” alongside “no pets allowed flights” allowing for people with phobias or allergies to “make that choice when booking.”

For those of you worried this might actually become a reality – allow us to put your fears at ease. Airlines aren’t showing much interest in this at the moment, and even if they did they would be obligated to prove they could do it safely.

Also, for what it’s worth, when The Civil Aviation Safety Authorities’ rule changes were first being talked about (before they’d actually been made), Qantas and Jetstar “indicated they weren’t keen on the idea, but Virgin was considering it,” the ABC reports.

It’s now been half a year since the changes went through, and currently, not one of the above three airlines allows pets in the cabin with passengers.

Chris Hemsworth’s Single Barbell Full Body Workout Will Destroy You
Chris Hemsworth’s Single Barbell Full Body Workout Will Destroy You

Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to serious workouts – see these medicine ball and bodyweight workouts as great examples – and his latest is sure to set your arms and legs on fire.

Taking to Instagram with a two-minute video, Chris uses a single Olympic barbell, which commonly weighs around 20kgs, to complete a brutal HIIT-style workout that will set your entire body aflame.

Chris orders you to complete 10 rounds of his workout, which comprises 7 exercises. He adds that you should go at your own pace, just as long as you complete the goal of 10 rounds.

The 7 exercises are as follows:

  • 10 x Bicep curls
  • 10 x Overhead press
  • 10 x Tricep extension
  • 10 x Squat
  • 10 x Lunges (10 each side)
  • 10 x Bent over row
  • 10 x Standing twists (10 each side)

Chris completes one round of the workout himself in 2 minutes, setting a tough benchmark to match, especially when you consider he appears pretty physically exhausted after just one round.

This Chris Hemsworth workout routine is part of a new 6-week program on his Centr app, called Centr Ignite. It has been designed to combine bodyweight and dumbbell exercises to “activate full-body strength, sculpting every muscle and blasting cardio fitness.”

The Centr Ignite program works on 35-minute workouts and has been developed by Chris’ personal trainer Luke Zocchi and Alexz Parvi.

The very fact Chris is using a barbell without any weight added on should be enough to prove this workout is going to be a lot harder than you may think. Any time you recruit your shoulders for extended periods, you can be sure you’re going to suffer from some serious fatigue, so the overhead press in this instance is going to be a serious test of your strength and stamina.

In our opinion, and without wanting to offend Mr Hemsworth, we would say his form for the bent-over row and lunges, in particular, is a little rushed.

It’s not just us, either, as one Instagram account – @jtstrength_and_conditioning, has commented, saying “Love ya Thor, but this is some god awful form.”

By only bending over a little, as opposed to fully hinging at the hips and pushing his bum out, Chris will be engaging more of his shoulders and traps, rather than the upper back and lats, which the bent-over row is meant to target.

Similarly, with his lunges, Chris doesn’t appear to be lunging down completely to the floor with his trailing knee, instead just hoping to smash out the 10 reps in a quick time. Performing these exercises in this way shouldn’t cause any injury, so are fine to imitate, you just might not reap the full benefit.

It’s with this is mind that you’ll need to determine if you want to complete the 10 rounds as quickly as possible, or if you’re going to be happy slowing things down in order to nail the technique and fully stress the muscles.

Either way, a Thor-like summer rig (hopefully) awaits.

Porsche & Audi To Enter Formula 1
Porsche & Audi To Enter Formula 1

Porsche and Audi are going to join Formula 1, Volkswagen’s CEO said on Monday.

Though there was discussion in the Volkswagen Group over how much it would cost for its two premium brands to join the World Championship, Porsche and Audi successfully made the case that becoming part of the highest class of international racing would bring in more money for Wolfsburg than it would cost.

Advertising was also a big factor that was considered.

Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess said on Monday, “You just run out of arguments.”

There have been rumours for a while now that Porsche and Audi have been negotiating partnerships to move into Formula 1.

Reuters reported in March that a source told them Audi is prepared to offer around €500 million (AU $741 million) for McLaren as a means to enter Formula 1. Both brands have denied these rumours though and some motoring sports outlets have speculated that Sauber, Williams and Aston Martin are now more likely options.

Porsche, meanwhile, appears to have a more long term plan, and is planning on “establishing a long-term partnership with racing team Red Bull starting in several years’ time,” ESPN reports.

The move into Formula 1 appears set to occur from 2026. Diess said there was a rare opportunity to make the move that doesn’t come around all too often, as it takes a few years to get prepared, and because there would be new rules in 2026.

He also said there had been a boom in Formula 1 interest in key markets.

“Formula 1 is developing extremely positively worldwide,” he said. “The marketing that is happening there, plus Netflix, has led to Formula 1’s following growing significantly in the U.S. as well. Asia is growing significantly, including among young customer groups. If you look at the major sporting events or events in the world, it’s the case that in motorsport, it’s really only Formula 1 that counts and is becoming increasingly differentiated.”

“If you do motorsport, you should do Formula 1 as that’s where the impact is greatest. What’s more, you can’t enter Formula 1 unless a technology window opens up which means, in order to get in there, a rule change: so that everyone starts again from the same place.”

“As Markus Duesman [chairman of Audi and former BMW F1 head of powertrains] always tells me, you usually make up one second per season on a medium-sized race track simply by optimising details.”

“But you can’t catch up on that when you join a new team: you need five or 10 years to be among the front runners. In other words, you can only get onboard if you have a major rule change.”

Herbert Diess

“That’s coming now, and it will also come in the direction of 2026, when the engines will be electrified to a much greater extent, including with synthetic fuels. That means you need a new engine development and you need three or four years to develop a new engine.”

“That means you can decide now to do Formula 1 – or then probably not again for 10 years. And our two premium brands think that’s the right thing to do, and are prioritising it.”

Some sceptical souls on online commentary boards say there is still enough time between now and 2026 for Volkswagen to back out, but by the way Diess is speaking, it really doesn’t sound like they plan on reversing this Formula 1 decision.

As for us? Now all we can do, really, is wait in anticipation to see if and when the rumoured deals between Porsche and Redbull (and Audi and McLaren) become official.
