I should start this review off by saying, I am a huge How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) fan; I’ve seen every season of the Emmy-winning sitcom multiple times and regularly quote it in my day-to-day life (“all hail Beercules!”). So when it was first announced that a spinoff called How I Met Your Father (HIMYF) was on its way, I had mixed feelings.
I was excited because, for me at least, there hasn’t really been a new sitcom that’s filled the void How I Met Your Mother left when it ended in 2014. However, I was also very concerned that this spinoff would ruin the original’s legacy.
My excitement grew when Hilary Duff was announced as the lead – I’m a huge Lizzie McGuire fan too – but when dismal reviews for the series started to leak (How I Met Your Father debuted in America three months ago while us Aussies had to wait until now) I realised I was foolish to hope that this standalone sequel would be as good as the series that inspired it.
Last night, I watched the first two episodes of How I Met Your Father that are now available to Australians on Disney+. From the opening credits, I was severely disappointed; sure, the musical tribute was nice (the opening credits have the same song as How I Met Your Mother’s, albeit a cover) but the pictures of the cast shown are so glossy and perfect; nothing like the clearly candid and realistic photos How I Met Your Mother’s opening used.

From there, it all went – further – downhill. I did not laugh once during the first episode and maybe laughed once during the second. The dialogue is not witty or snappy like How I Met Your Mother’s was, the characters aren’t as interesting or loveable, and the actors are all giving over-the-top cheesy (read: horrible) performances…
Which must be what they’ve been told to do because Duff gave an excellent performance in Younger, and Chris Lowell, who plays the male lead in HIMYF, gave a charming and nuanced performance in Veronica Mars, proving that this cast is made up of people who can act well… They’re just not doing it this show.
I do like that HIMYF’s cast is more diverse than How I Met Your Mother’s but it feels a tad performative as each actor is almost playing a caricature; Ellen, played by Tien Tran, mentions she’s a lesbian in the first two episodes SO many times – something a real-life lesbian would never nor need to do.
Plus, there’s no ‘magic’ chemistry. How I Met Your Mother at the end of the day was a show about romance; all Ted wanted was to find love, and not even Robin and Barney shippers can deny that Ted, played by Josh Radnor, and Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, had magnetic and palpable chemistry in the OG’s pilot and you desperately rooted for them to get together throughout all of How I Met Your Mother’s first season.
However, in HIMYF, Duff and Lowell, who are obviously supposed to be the ‘Ted and Robin’ this time around, have no connection or spark. There’s also no Marshall Eriksen replacement – who I’ve been in love with since I first saw the HIMYM pilot in 2005 – there’s no sweet, cool and slightly oddball member of the gang that’s as likeable as Marshall, nor is there a comic relief, like Barney.

I wasn’t expecting HIMYF to have a ‘womaniser’ as some of Barney’s antics from the original show are understandably now criticised but he did have some hilarious and iconic one-liners such as “It’s going to be legen – wait for it, and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is – dary!” but no one in this spinoff has said anything remotely funny or iconic.
I even tried to stop comparing HIMYF to How I Met Your Mother whilst watching to see if that improved the quality, but it didn’t. The show is just flat with boring (and some annoying) characters and no clear central romance. Plus, despite the fact that it’s a sitcom, How I Met Your Father is not funny in the slightest; I am actually suspicious that the show’s laugh-track is fake or there were signs insisting that audience members must laugh.
If you’re a How I Met Your Mother fan like me, do not even bother watching this spinoff series. I honestly don’t think I’ll finish the rest of How I Met Your Father’s first season as I’m really not invested in any of the characters or the plot; I mean, the show already gave away that ‘the father’ was in the first episode which means it’s one of four men.
And if you’re not a How I Met Your Mother fan, you still shouldn’t watch HIMYF; go watch the original – also available on Disney+ – instead. Oh, and if I had to give a score, well then How I Met Your Father is maybe a 2/10 (points for the fact that Ted’s old apartment is in the show and his and Marshall’s swords are still on the wall).

A woman has said she was upgraded to first class after the passenger next to her (in economy) started watching adult material on his phone. He also hogged both armrests, she said, leaving her “squished against the side of the plane,” she told Daily Dot.
The video, which Melanie Scholfield (@a1iengir1 on TikTok) posted to social media in the aftermath of the incident, has 662.1k views. She captioned the clip: “When the old man you’re sitting next to on the plane starts watching plane p@rn so you tell the flight attendants and now you’re sitting [in] first class.”
“Only cried for like ten minutes so we’re gucci,” she added.
Some TikTok users didn’t take it seriously, saying: “That’s one way to get the aisle seat.” Others tried to get the TikTok community to understand how serious this gross behaviour really is, explaining how uncomfortable and creepy it is to be sat next to someone like this.
One TikTok user wrote: “Naaaasty. I’m sorry you experienced that.” Another said: “i’m so sorry that sounds so traumatic :(((.”
Another wrote: “The fact that he thought it was okay to do that on a plane????”
Scholfield told Daily Dot that the flight attendants didn’t know what to do at first, but eventually upgraded her to first class to get her away from the man.
“For the entire flight I was upset and scared,” she told Daily Dot. “But I’m grateful the flight attendants helped me and that I was able to get out of an unsafe situation.”
“I don’t think the creep was removed from the flight. I’m not sure he got any punishment whatsoever.”
This isn’t the first time weird behaviour like this has happened on a plane. Comedian Francis Ellis shared last year how the guy next to him on an Indianapolis flight was “touching up a dick pic of his own… lighting it and shaping it and making it really nice.”
Francis said: “He was trying to be covert about it, but I was also very covertly studying the orchestration of this photo.”
He also explained how the man’s behaviour appeared to be at odds with his superstitious beliefs: “As we landed – as we were right about to touch down – he crossed himself.”
“The father, son, holy ghost… As if Lionel Messi had just scored a goal. In my mind, it was very funny for this guy who had just spent 20 minutes very intensely fixing a dick pic to remember to thank God for delivering him safely back to the earth.”
“If he believes that God is involved in the safe delivery of the plane… then he certainly has this fear that we’re going to crash, which means it should be on his mind that whatever he is doing as we’re descending could be the last thing he does.”
“The last thing on earth he’s doing is spending time looking at his own dick, improving it and those things are at odds to me.”
“If he believes in it then – in my mind – he should be looking at a picture of his family or looking out the window… instead it’s his own penis for completely aesthetic reasons.”
Bizarre indeed.

Australians (and cricket fans) were devastated when the legendary Shane Warne died from a suspected heart attack. Naturally, many tributes from friends, family and fans poured in, but it’s the tribute posted by Warne’s son, Jackson, that has really moved us, as it shows that the two truly did have a great relationship as father and son.
Jackson Warne, Shane’s only son, posted a black and white photograph of himself and his dad on Instagram two days ago with the following caption:
“To my brother, my best friend, to my Dad, I love you so much. I don’t think anything is ever going to fill the void you have left in my heart. Sitting at the poker table, walking around the golf course, watching the Saints and eating pizza is never going to be the same but I know all you ever wanted for me is to be happy, no matter what.”
So, that’s what I’m going to do, try and be happy. Every day you told me how proud you were of me and I promise to try and keep making you proud. I am going to miss you so much Dad, I wish I could look you in the eyes 1 more time and give you one more hug.”
“You were truly the best father and best mate anyone could’ve asked for. I love you so much Dad, see you soon.”

He then went on to post another tribute to his late dad last night, which featured multiple family photos and videos, with the caption:
“Memories of dad. Thank you everyone for the overwhelming amount of support, messages and love.”
Warne and his son Jackson looked to be extremely close. The videos in the second Instagram tribute show the two laughing and enjoying each other’s company. The two also went to the Australian Open together just five weeks ago. Plus, going through Jackson’s Instagram feed there are multiple posts of him with his dad; a rarity for a 22-year-old.

A memorial for Shane Warne will be held on March 30th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and is open and free for all members of the public to attend, while a private family service will be held next week. Our thoughts go out to Warne’s entire family.

Colin Kaepernick isn’t giving up on his NFL dream just yet, a video recently posted to his Instagram page suggests.
In fact, the 34-year-old could be in the best shape of his life, some sources have said (according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter).
This comes after he posted a video of his throwing practice with the caption: “Still working.”
Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season, after controversy erupted around his protests against social and racial inequality. In that season he amassed 16 passing touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games.
He has spent the past couple of years working with his non-profit group, Know Your Rights Camp (and working on his Netflix series).

Kaepernick became a free agent in 2017 after relinquishing his 49ers contract. He and his former teammate Eric Reid filed a complaint against the NFL, alleging that team owners conspired to keep them unsigned for protesting.
The pair eventually agreed to a confidential settlement with the NFL.
Kaepernick does appear to want to return to the NFL, however, telling Ebony last October: “I am still up at 5 a.m. training five, six days a week making sure I’m prepared to take a team to a Super Bowl again.”
“That’s not something I will ever let go of, regardless of the actions of 32 teams and their partners to deny me employment. The same way I was persistent in high school is the same way I’m gonna be persistent here.”

The time away from the league could stop Kaepernick from being signed, “although several teams could be desperate for quarterback help with limited options in free agency or the draft,” Bleacher Report explains.
Twitter users commenting on Kaepernick’s latest training video shared the teams they thought Kaepernick would be good for.
So many teams who could use Kaep rn:

Another, on Instagram, wrote of the 6 year veteran, “Could start for half the damn NFL! Ridiculous.”
Here’s hoping we get to see Kaepernick back on the big stage soon.

The Sydney property market has been going bananas for a long time. From FOMO-inspired buyers creating a super cycle of debt to our debate over what constitutes being over-leveraged in today’s climate, it’s a truly trending topic.
Speaking of things as hot as a laptop with a broken fan, F45 founder Rob Deutsch has just listed his Bronte beachside pad for sale.
Deutsch bought the house, which is located in Sydney’s sought-after Eastern Suburbs, for $11.2 million in 2018.
Deutsch founded F45 – a popular fitness chain – in Sydney in 2012. He is reportedly worth $315.

His three-bedroom Bronte home has a home cinema and cocktail bar, a wine cellar, a flashy garage and an outdoor kitchen and swimming pool.
Deutsch has done a full renovation since buying the place – it’s now got three levels with a 14m front to the beach and dual street access.
The north-facing garden has a mineral pool and a pavilion. It also has a gourmet kitchen and the master suite has a walk-in-wardrobe, ensuite and balcony.
Two other bedrooms have ensuites, studies and sunrooms, realestate.com.au reports.

The Bronte record sale price is currently $25 million. Deutsch’s home will go up for auction on April the second with a $17.5m price guide.
Deutsch has put the Bronte house on the market once before, in early 2020, but pulled it off after a few weeks.
Realestate.com.au says it was the most viewed home in Sydney’s east on their website at the time and “the agents received two unconditional offers that weren’t accepted.”

“But it was pulled from the market after just three weeks amid assumptions the market was about to plunge as Covid hit,” realestate.com.au adds.
Instead, Sydney’s property market – particularly in the Eastern Suburbs – has only got hotter. It appears Deutsch is now hoping to cash in on that.

Aircraft owners are trying to find hundreds of Airbus and Boeing jets that Russian carriers have stashed under their skirts (to stop them being seized) behind what has been called “a new incarnation of the Iron Curtain.”
An industry insider told Bloomberg that foreign leasing firms have repossessed only about 24 of the more than 500 aircraft rented to Russian carriers. The remaining planes are reportedly worth about $10.3 billion USD ($14.1 billion AUD).
Steve Giordano, managing director of Nomadic Aviation Group, a company specializing in aircraft repossessions, told Bloomberg that, in the worst-case, “these aeroplanes are gone forever.”
Reuters reported today that the foreign leasing firms “have received mostly radio silence as experts warn of legal wrangling that could last a decade.”
Most leasing firms have until the 28th of March to cut ties with Russian airlines, due to Western bans in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. This has sparked a game of what Reuters calls “cat and mouse” all over the world as lenders desperately try to seize their aircraft back.
“Leasing companies are terminating leases and asking for planes to be returned along with the paperwork that must be secured for planes to be placed with new airlines,” Reuters reports.
But Russian airlines are reportedly not yet complying.
Simple Flying reports that a source at Aeroflot told website FrequentFlyers.ru that the Russian government might not even be able to “buy out” the airline’s leased jets because of financial sanctions. “As a result,” Simple Flying reports, “it has been suggested that aircraft would be nationalized without any compensation to aircraft owners.”
The economic and industry implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continue to spread far and wide around the world – just recently we reported on how the war is impacting the bottom line of carriers like Finnair and oil and other energy prices have shot up since the invasion.

Nikita Mazepin has had a contentious Formula 1 career. The 23-year-old Russian’s maiden F1 season with Haas last year was pretty inglorious: not only did he finish the season without scoring a single point, but he was pretty comprehensively outdriven by his teammate, Mick Schumacher (son of the legendary Michael Schumacher).
This is despite his father, billionaire oligarch Dmitry Mazepin, pouring millions of dollars into Haas, with Uralkali (a Russian chemicals company he’s a major shareholder in) becoming the team’s title sponsor. Indeed, Nikita’s propensity for coming off the track in 2021 saw him earn the unfortunate nickname ‘Mazespin’ and reignited the eternal debate about ‘pay drivers’ in F1.
Now, Nikita Mazepin finds himself at the centre of yet more controversy. In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Haas has terminated both Mazepin’s contract and Uralkali’s title sponsorship, leaving the young Russian without a seat in F1 for 2022.
Naturally, Mazepin’s not very happy about the situation and took to social media to address his departure – as well as to announce the creation of a foundation funded by Uralkali designed to support athletes unable to compete due to war or politics.
“The foundation will allocate resources… to those athletes who have spent their lives preparing for Olympics or Paralympics or other top events only to find they were forbidden from competing and collectively punished just because of the passports they held,” Mazepin says.
The foundation, called ‘We Compete As One’ (a thinly veiled dig at F1’s anti-racism motto, ‘We Race As One’) isn’t explicitly for Russian athletes, but you’ve got to read between the lines here. It’s Russian athletes who are increasingly finding themselves shut out of international sporting events, and it’s because their country launched an unprovoked invasion of another country.
RELATED: Formula 1 Announces 2022 Russian Grand Prix Boycott
While the whole thing does come off as sour grapes, it’s actually an interesting idea and one that we shouldn’t dismiss out of hand. It’s hard not to feel at least some sympathy for ‘regular’ Russian (or any) athletes who find themselves unable to compete at international sporting events because of their country’s actions, which they may not necessarily support.
For example, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from the Beijing Winter Paralympics over the war in Ukraine. How galling would it be to be shut out from an event you’ve trained your whole life for because of something out of your control?
But let’s be clear. Mazepin and his father aren’t just ‘regular Russians’ who find themselves caught in a sticky political situation. Dimitry Mazepin is one of Russia’s richest men and is close to Vladimir Putin. Indeed, both Mazepins have been added to a European Union sanctions blacklist, with the EU describing Dimitry as “a member of [Putin’s] closest circle”. This is why you shouldn’t feel sorry for him.

Mazepin has some support from within the F1 paddock. Helmut Marko, the notoriously curmudgeonly head of Red Bull’s driver development program, has questioned Mazepin’s exclusion from the sport during a recent interview.
“I think that the Russian GP [being removed] is justified [and] excluding Mazepin is justified insofar as his cockpit is financed with Russian money. National teams should also be excluded. But individual athletes? Hello, there must be no personal liability… let athletes who clearly distance themselves from Putin start,” Marko told OE24.
But Mazepin hasn’t done that yet, and he probably won’t.
RELATED: Lewis Hamilton’s Opinion On Racing In Saudi Arabia Sparks Debate
Mazepin says there’s been no contact with his former bosses at Haas or from former teammate Mick Schumacher, but other F1 drivers including Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, had sent “very simple” personal messages, he tells Reuters.
“They supported me in feeling for me for losing that opportunity to compete. Nothing political. Just personal, keep your head up… It was just what I believe a good human being should do.”
Otherwise, there’s not a love lost between Mazepin and other drivers on the grid, many of whom have previously voiced umbrage at how he repeatedly ignored blue flags, drove dangerously and held up other drivers throughout the 2021 F1 season.

We Compete As One isn’t the only charitable organisation Mazepin’s founded. Earlier this month, he unveiled another project, ‘Formula of Freedom’ – a go-karting club for children and adults with cerebral palsy. Clearly, he’s not a complete dick… Even if his behaviour on track leaves a lot to be desired.
Ultimately, it’s a complicated issue, and one we’re likely to continue to encounter as the global backlash against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine grows.
There’s one piece of good news to come out of all this, though. Danish driver Kevin Magnussen, who drove for Haas from 2017 to 2020, has been called up at the last minute to fill Mazepin’s seat for 2022, much to the delight of F1 fans.
The 2022 Formula 1 World Championship kicks off this weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

While most Australian super funds seem to be unaware that cryptocurrency even exists, Rest Super has officially become the first superannuation fund in Australia to demonstrate interest in gaining exposure to the 1.8 trillion dollar crypto market.
During Rest Super’s annual general meeting late last year, the firm’s chief investment officer (CIO), Andrew Lill, told members that the company views crypto assets as an “important part” of its portfolio heading into the future, stating that:
“It’s still a very volatile investment, so any allocation exposure we make to cryptocurrencies is likely to be part of our diversified portfolio as initially a fairly small allocation that may, over time, build.”
Lill went on to add that offering members access to crypto and associated blockchain technology could potentially provide a “stable source of value” in a time where investors are using crypto assets like bitcoin as a hedge against fiat-based inflation.
“I do think that, in an era of inflation, it could be a potentially good place to invest,” he said.
Following further investigation from DMARGE, Rest Super CEO Andrew Lili tempered the excitement of crypto enthusiasts by stating that any investment in the sector is still quite some time away.
“While we are certainly considering cryptocurrencies as a way to diversify our members’ retirement savings, we will not be investing in the immediate future. Any investment is more likely in the medium term.”
On the other side of the fence is Paul Schroder, CEO of AustralianSuper, Australia’s largest superannuation fund with $245 billion AUD under management — who quickly denounced cryptocurrency as an investment choice, owing to the fact that crypto assets do not generate any income or revenue.
“We don’t see cryptocurrency as investable for our members,” he said at a conference in Sydney on Monday.
A good deal of hype around institutional interest in crypto assets sprung up after Commonwealth Bank announced in November last year that it would also be offering crypto investment services to its clients. However, the decision seemed to be motivated less by an immediate investment strategy and more by FOMO with CBA CEO Matt Comyn telling Bloomberg:
“We see risks in participating, but we see bigger risks in not participating.”
Comyn continued, “we don’t have a view on the asset price itself, we see it as a very volatile and speculative asset, but we also don’t think that the sector and the technology is going away anytime soon.”
While the volatile domain of cryptocurrency doesn’t seem to be the most intuitive match up for a dependable fund that’s designed to help everyday Australians retire in safety — over two thirds of Aussie crypto investors have been calling on superannuation funds to gain more exposure to the crypto market, according to a July 2021 survey conducted by polling service YouGov and crypto exchange Swyftx.
As most blockchain enthusiasts are waiting for superannuation funds to catch up, other investors have been taking matters into their own hands, with more than two-in-five current crypto owners indicating that they already have some level of exposure to cryptocurrencies in their retirement savings, presumably via a self-managed super fund (SMSF).
Ultimately, the majority of superannuation funds are still a very long way from investing in any crypto or blockchain-related assets. In the meantime, ASIC (Australian Securities & Investment Commission) has provided a staunch warning to Aussie investors looking to use their retirement savings to invest in crypto assets.
“Be wary of services offering to establish an SMSF for you in order to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies. Not only does operating an SMSF involve significant time, skills and responsibility, you may also be putting your retirement savings at risk.”

Former Socceroos Mark Bosnich and Craig Forster had a field day at halftime this morning, as Real Madrid went into the dressing room trailing PSG in their last-16 Champions League second leg game 1-0 down on the night (2-0 down on aggregate).
“It always comes a time with teams where younger teams coming through the next generation kind of put the nail in the coffin for certain teams and that’s exactly what PSG looked like they were doing to Real Madrid in that first half,” Bosnich said.
“That’s true, that’s my impression also actually,” Forster agreed. “Because when they [Real Madrid] were winning all of their Champions Leagues not too long ago they had Ronaldo, which was your Mbappe of the day.”
“They had someone who everyone was frightened about… and now you’ve got this guy who you just cannot stop and after 10 minutes of trying to press it’s clear that Real Madrid don’t have any more of that in them… maybe just the first 10 in the second half.”

He continued: “PSG demonstrated their quality across all aspects – they were able to keep the ball and they were able to counter-attack and the thing about Real Madrid is they are not better in either of those aspects.”
“When they [PSG] played against Manchester City, City were better with the ball than PSG and then they could stop the counter attack. Real Madrid don’t have as strong a counter attack and they’re not as good with the ball.”
Craig Forster
“To me in the first leg… they made a 200 million euro offer for Mbappe, well he already was at 400 million when he destroyed them in the first leg, after this first half [of the second leg] then there is no cheque that they can write,” he continued.
The game changed in the second half after a catastrophic error from PSG’s keeper, which saw Madrid equalise (on the night). Madrid then scored two more goals and won the round of 16 match 3-1, with Benzema and Modric having blinders.
In the most difficult moment for Real Madrid, this talented boy appeared… 36 years old and he seems like 26. Mentality. Quality. Pure class.

Even at the end of the game, though the Australian soccer pundits began singing Benzema and Modric’s praises, the Stan commentary team still said if they were English teams or Bayern Munich they’d be happy with the result today, suggesting that even though PSG are mentally weaker than Madrid, and don’t have the same winners mentality, they are the scarier team to face.
Bosnich at least remarked on how “football can turn so easily” and Forster emphasised the words of commentator Martin Tyler, saying: “it’s a game played just as much in the head as in the feet… you rarely see a greater example of that [after the error that led to the first goal].”
They also finally gave Real Madrid some credit, saying: “Amazing from Real Madrid because even from then [after the equaliser] it’s still difficult, some magnificent play… Modric …those two passes, as you said again PSG have just absolutely blown it… credit to Madrid that was an extraordinary comeback.”
To the pundit’s credit, everything they said was basically accurate. Real Madrid are an aging side, PSG are so talented it’s terrifying, and it’s absolutely remarkable what just happened. But pundits will always play the percentages (although I’ll admit I would have liked to have seen a little more acknowledgement of how much the game showed their halftime comments wrong at the end of the match) and this time they were made to look a little silly.
And that’s what’s so great about football.
