Chris Pine Shows You How To Pull Off One Of The Hardest Suit Colours Ever
Chris Pine Shows You How To Pull Off One Of The Hardest Suit Colours Ever

When suit shopping there’s rarely a case where men will think: “I’m going to pick up a mustard coloured suit today for work”. As one of the hardest suiting colours to pull off (alongside a red suit), actor Chris Pine made easy work of it and he did it with absolute class and a touch of summer flair.Earlier this week the American actor was spotted in Paris at the pre-wedding dinner of Zoe Kravitz. Stepping out of a luxurious black Maybach, the 38-year-old showed off his 90s style split hair (which we debated over recently) with a bit of salt and pepper happening. The unstructured suit? It was an all linen affair shod in a very sharp mustard yellow hue.As the casual suiting king, Pine opted to forgo the tie and dress shoes, instead drumming up the European summer vibes with an unbuttoned white dress shirt, polka dot pocket square, Gucci loafers (sans socks, naturally), thin brown leather belt and a pair of killer sunglasses. There was no watch spotted on his wrist but with seriously sharp suiting moves like this, the man didn’t need it.A key point to remember as always with suiting is to address fitment. This is especially important when going for bold colours like mustard that will not hide lazy material and ill-fitment like black usually would. Your tailor is your best friend in this case. Here’s to you, Captain Kirk. Godspeed.

Why You Get Gassy In The Gym, According To A Flatulence Doctor
Why You Get Gassy In The Gym, According To A Flatulence Doctor

Your local gym’s squat rack used to be a civilised space, but have you ever wondered why it tends to smell like rotting cheese whenever it’s your turn? Thank gym flatulence for that.

Whether it’s in the gym, during cross fit or in the yoga studio, flatulence in the workout environment can be an embarrassing affair (and one that gets you exiled from the cross fit squad). Well let us be the ones to tell you that it’s only natural. Sort of. Health recently hit up a gastroenterology expert to find out why we tend to pass gas more during our most arduous workout sessions and the multitude of reasons is quite interesting.

According to Peyton Berookim, MD and director of the Gastroenterology Institute of Southern California, simply moving your body can encourage the onset of flatulence.

“Any exercises that involve physical bending or twisting can cause the air in our digestive tract to be literally pushed out,” he says. This occurrence doesn’t discriminate and can happen in all forms of physical activity from pilates to cycling to yoga, weights and anything else that requires the intestines to compress. Crunches are the biggest culprits of this.

Even bodybuilders and dedicated weightlifters aren’t immune. Berookim explains that strength-based athletes often use a breathing technique called the Valsalva maneuver which helps them lift heavier. In doing so, the extra amount of air isn’t expelled from the mouth but rather from the bottom.

“This way of breathing is most common in exercises that involve pushing, hinging, and squatting, so powerlifters and Olympic weightlifters might notice more gas being expressed,” adds Berookim.

And during F45 or cross fit based sports? The gas doesn’t escape you either. During aerobic exercises that require more jumping your internal organs oscillate side to side and vertically. This causes the natural digestion process to speed up, creating gas in the GI tract to expel at a much faster rate. This is the same process that causes runner’s diarrhoea.

Breathing is similarly an instigator of flatulence. Exercise physiologist Jim White, told Health that “an individual’s inability to inhale and exhale properly can cause flatulence at a higher rate”. When you breathe rapidly, it forces excess air into the stomach and intestines before rushing to your anus. Ironically, breathing a certain way can also prevent flatulence during workouts. When you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, your body limits the amount of air reaching the GI tract. When this happens flatulence decreases.

Other culprits of gym flatulence include high-fibre foods which can create a lot of gas. According to Berookim this can include onions, cruciferous vegetables, Brussels sprouts, and legumes. The same goes for highly gaseous wheat, whole grains, carbonated drinks, and sugar alcohols. Whilst water is highly endorsed in any workout session, it can also be a flatulence trigger if consumed in huge amounts according to Audra Wilson, a nutritionist at the Metabolic Health and Surgical Weight Loss Centre.

Thankfully there’s a solution to all of this fitness flatulence. Jim White explains that the perfect pre-workout snack is simply a banana for energy or peanut butter for protein and fat before a big sweat session. The most important take away from all of this is accepting that passing gas is natural especially at the gym. Just make sure that if it needs to be done, it’s done away from your fellow gym junkies.

Travellers Reveal The Most Ridiculous ‘Mileage Runs’ They’ve Done To Keep Their Frequent Flyer Status Alive
Travellers Reveal The Most Ridiculous ‘Mileage Runs’ They’ve Done To Keep Their Frequent Flyer Status Alive

Anyone who thinks we got rid of the ‘class divide’ with the French Revolution, the United Irishmen rebellion or even the introduction of high-quality knock off handbags and sneakers clearly hasn’t ever flown internationally.

While the Pointy End of the plane is all champagne and smiles, Economy passengers sit like battery hens — only with more clucking and pecking. And that’s not to mention the fast-tracked boarding and fancy lounges a Business or First Class ticket will net you, compared to the slow security shuffle a Cattle Class journey involves.

Suffice to say — many travellers will go to any lengths to gain easier access to all this. However, as airlines complete their annual database cull, frequent-only-in name flyers are faced with the threat of being removed from the teat of epicurean delight that provided them with such feelings of superiority awesome and convenient benefits.

When this is on the verge of happening — and you just need to earn a couple more status credits to keep your place — what do you do?

Yesterday we asked our 42k audience on Instagram and Reddit’s 2.9 million strong r/travel community this very question. And to say the answers were revealing would be as big of an understatement as Pilot Eric Moody’s announcement to the passengers onboard the engine-failed BA Flight 9 that “we have a small problem.”

Here’s a smattering of D’Marge Travellers’ guiltiest admissions.

  • “Was 5 status credits short for Velocity Platinum last year so flew to Hobart Airport, couple of beers and flew home again. Don’t tell anyone.”
  • “Flew to Sydney from Canberra then bussed back for the 10 points.”
  • “2 weeks ago I flew to Auckland for 3 hours then home to get platinum.”

When asked whether it was worth it, Dave Evans (proud owner of that last confession there) summed up how we all feel.

“Worth it for sure. First class lounge access, better award seats and soft landing back to gold if I can’t maintain it. Plus I got to kick back and watch movies and drink red wine while on the status run.”

Hitting up Reddit with our own status run admission, and asking other travellers for their stories, revealed that travellers across the pond are not averse to a cheeky status run either.

“A friend of mine here in Denver was close to having his United miles expire, but he didn’t have any more vacation hours available from work. So he booked a one-way ticket from Denver to Colorado Springs (back when United flew that route), which is about a one-hour drive on the freeway. He used Greyhound for the return trip later the same day.”

There were also a few more extreme examples: “I did 16 flights in 4 days a few years ago to get my first gold card with SAS. TOS-OSL-HAM-CPH-OSL-TOS two days in a row and TOS-OSL-CPH-AMS on day three and AMS-CPH-OSL-TOS on day four.”

People also pointed out that — unless you have had an unusually quiet year for travel and anticipate a lot of jet setting in the year to come — it’s not advisable to spend thousands on a status run.

“If you fly frequently enough to get value out of it, then you’ll get the status automatically.”

“If you fly so infrequently that you’re having to drop thousands of dollars on a mileage run, then I’d be amazed if the perks ever outweighed the cost,” one man commented.

“The difference between platinum and gold on Qantas is what? Ability to use a first lounge rather than a gold lounge, a few more points flights available and priority to spend points on upgrades?”

“Instead of first lounge access,” he added, “You could probably have saved those thousands of dollars and just spent a fraction visiting a decent restaurant in the airport each time you fly. Probably would get better food too.”

So weight up the pros and cons — and book wisely.

Secret To Dressing Effortlessly Sharp For Any Type Of Boat Party
Secret To Dressing Effortlessly Sharp For Any Type Of Boat Party

For those that enjoy a good event, a boat party is the pinnacle of summer festivities. As the chicest, most elite (and often most expensive) kind of shindig you can attend it usually calls for a specific set of style guidelines – and the attitude to match. But you needn’t be daunted; with a deft hand and couple of key pointers, you’ll be sure to look like a natural seafarer, whether it be on the French Riviera or Sydney Harbour. It’s all about the breezy combo, baby.

What Shirt To Wear To A Boat Party

When at sea the key thing to focus your sartorial gaze on is fabric. Whether you’re opting for a French button down linen shirt or a crisp white t-shirt, your choice of shirt should feel resort inspired and like you’re on a holiday. Look at beach-y hues such as pale blue, ocean spray, beige or white. Venroy has an enviable collection of colours and fits that meet this brief perfectly.

In terms of styling, understated elegance is the goal. Experiment with details like a French-tuck where the front of the shirt is tucked into the waist band with the back trailing out behind. Flicking back the cuffs of a shirt will also ensure that you err on the side of relaxed sea goer versus white-collar worker. If you’re willing to try something more avant-garde, look at detailing like a Mandarin collar or bolder print shirts with wide stripes or even a sheer finish. These paired with a neutral pair of linen trousers or shorts make for effortless, nautical elegance.

What Jacket To Wear To A Boat Party

If the occasion (or simply the weather) calls for it, you may need to add a jacket to the mix. However, it can’t just be any old blazer. Go too heavy or structured and it won’t look in keeping with the airy, nautical vibe. Instead, look for lightly tailored, unlined jackets in navy or sand with interesting details like pale-coloured buttons or peaked lapels.

For inspiration, turn to the likes of Australian sartorial wunderkind Patrick Johnson from P. Johnson Tailors who favours ‘classic nautical blues and whites. Off white trousers, navy polo shirt and a navy blazer, gold buttons (the whole bit)’. If you’re looking to make more of a statement, use a blazer as an opportunity to experiment with bolder patterns and textures. Seersucker is made for sailing and adds a point of interest to a more standard pair of tailored trousers and button-down shirt.

What Pants To Wear To A Boat Party

Being on a boat is relaxing and the structure of your trousers should reflect that. In place of starchy cotton twill chinos, use a boat party to try less structured linen trousers in navy or cream. These trousers are all about the details so seek out a pair that has tab sides or a rope-tie belt. This is a sure-fire way to give a nod to your on-water venue in a way that feels elegant rather than kitsch.

If linen isn’t your thing – and it’s perhaps a slightly more casual affair – a pair of white pants paired with a blue and white Breton stripe top will make for a nonchalant but classic look. Add a pair of classic sunglasses from the likes of Persol to the mix and you’ll be ready for whatever the day may throw at you.

What Shorts To Wear To A Boat Party

In the warmer months, a boat party is one of the only events where a gent has license to get his legs out. However, there’s a specific way to approach shorts so take note. First and foremost, look for a style that hits just above the knee in a tailored cut. Any longer or baggier and you’ll start looking bottom heavy and throw off the proportions of your ensemble.

Secondly, pair your shorts with a tailored shirt to ensure you look adequately dressed up. Opt for shorts in a neutral taupe or white and pair with a linen shirt in a vibrant pastel colour. Aqua, tangerine and canary yellow are all great options that can make the right kind of statement. Anchor these with a canvas or woven belt to finish off your outfit.

What Accessories To Wear To A Boat Party

Given the often times casual nature of a boat event, the devil is in the details. Use accessories as an opportunity to mark you out from the masses and to elevate your look.

If you’re headed to a day time event, adding a Panama hat and sharp sunglasses to your ensemble will signify that you’ve put some thought into it and haven’t just thrown on a shirt and shorts. For the sartorially bold, you could even look at adding a flamboyant statement with a silk neckerchief. These were the toast of Pitti this year and are a certain way to position you at the vanguard of the style stakes. Look for iterations in paisley prints and statement colours – this will contrast sensationally against a more neutral base ensemble.

Should it be an evening cocktail event, accessorise with a linen pocket square and a statement belt. Play with colour, looking at belts in turquoise, orange or brick red that have a statement buckle. The likes of Salvatore Ferragamo have an enviable selection as do Suit Supply who offer theirs at a more budget friendly price point.

Boat Party Outfits FAQ

What is a seersucker?

Seersucker, also called railroad stripe, is a thin, puckered fabric, 100% cotton, used to make clothing items fit for spring and summer wear. Aside from clothes, it can also be used to make curtains and robes.

How do I wear a statement belt?

A statement belt works best when paired with simple outfits. Skip the patterns and avoid too much colors for maximum contrast. Since it is an eye-catching piece, it will draw attention to your waist so make sure to you will be comfortable with all that scrutiny.

How to style Panama hats?

Panama hats are versatile, so you can wear them with almost anything. You can wear it on the beach with swim shorts and Hawaiian shirt, or a linen suit and buckskin shoes for a sophisticated Riviera style.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Hybrid Blazer Is Something You’ve Never Seen Before
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Hybrid Blazer Is Something You’ve Never Seen Before

Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Holland have been scoring wardrobe home runs all week thanks to the premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. For his latest outing Gyllenhaal tried something truly interesting with his outfit: a hybrid blazer zip-up jacket.

A closer look at the black blazer by Haider Ackermann with standard lapels reveals a geometric patterned section which is actually cuffed more like a casual jacket, making it one of the most interesting menswear pieces we’ve seen this year. It seemingly takes two staples of the smart casual wardrobe and fuses it together, a technique which certainly wouldn’t work for say…a chino-denim hybrid.

Here’s a closer look at the blazer-jacket from the side which shows how it’s cut. It almost looks like the bottom section of a cardigan and played nicely with Gyllenhaal’s black crew neck tee, trousers and leather boots.

Gyllenhall’s watch duties meanwhile was nicely handled with the classic Santos de Cartier which we talked about recently. Unlike Holland who switched up his Cartier watch for a Patek Philippe this week, the Santos de Cartier has been accompanying Gyllenhaal on the global tour. You can even see it in action below in a skit the 38-year-old actor posted on his Instagram.

New Survey Reveals The Nationalities Travellers Find Most Attractive
New Survey Reveals The Nationalities Travellers Find Most Attractive

A good trip always involves a few butterflies. For most of us this comes from the anticipation of a cold Vermouth, an adventurous activity, or a bucket-list vista, but for a lucky few the nerves may be incited by lustful eyes across the bar.

While this fleeting gaze can come from any direction (or nationality), a new survey has revealed that 21st-century travellers get particularly giddy about the idea of it coming from a Ukrainian, Dane, Filipino, Brazilian or Australian.

Whilst the creators of the survey — Big 7 Travel — acknowledge that ‘sexiness’ is subjective and their social media poll is not representative of the entire travel industry they have released the results gleaned from a sample of their 1.5 million social audience anyway.

“Survey respondents were given no further specifications of the term ‘sexy’, so interpretation of the word was up to them.”

While Big 7 Travel ran the risk of being accused of ethnic fetishism, the survey has been largely received in the light-hearted way in which it was intended, with News.com.au calling it a “21st-century approach to the Ethnography of sexiness.”

Big 7 Travel cited boxer Manny Pacquiao and singer Bruno Mars for the world’s fascination with Filipinos, thongs for the interest in Brazil and ‘surfer chic’ for the success of Australia.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, the birthplace of actress Mila Kunis (and a number of famous models), claimed the title of ‘most attractive population for 2019’.

“Ukrainians have a striking appearance and have easily topped our poll for 2019.”

We’ve left the top 10 below, but to see the full list, head on over to Big 7 Travel.

1. Ukrainian

2. Danish

3. Filipino

4. Brazilian

5. Australian

6. South African

7. Italian

8. Armenian

9. English

10. Canadian

A New Cure For Baldness Has Been Found & It Doesn’t Require Painful Surgery
A New Cure For Baldness Has Been Found & It Doesn’t Require Painful Surgery

Regrowing hair naturally is a solution that’s rarely heard of in hair loss treatment circles these days. If the latest study discovery from American researchers is a proven breakthrough though, the answer could lie in human stem cells.Scientists from Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in California refined a method which enabled them to grow hair through the skin of mice using dermal papilla cells that were derived from human pluripotent stem cells. The tests combined human stem cells with mice cells before they were applied to a 3D biodegradable scaffold – the same material that dissolvable stitches are made from. This scaffolding then acts as a platform which controls the direction of hair growth whilst supporting the stem cell’s integration into the skin.“Our new protocol overcomes key technological challenges that kept our discovery from real-world use,” said Alexey Terskikh, an associate professor in Sanford Burnham Prebys’ Development, Ageing and Regeneration Program.“Now we have a robust, highly controlled method for generating natural-looking hair that grows through the skin using an unlimited source of human iPSC-derived dermal papilla cells.“This is a critical breakthrough in the development of cell-based hair-loss therapies and the regenerative medicine field.”The findings which were presented at the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) in Los Angeles also garnered praise from Dr Richard Chaffoo, a triple board certified plastic surgeon in advanced cosmetic and reconstructive procedures who said that this discovery could improve the lives of millions.“Hair loss profoundly affects many people’s lives. A significant part of my practice involves both men and women who are seeking solutions to their hair loss.”Whilst we’ve seen radical and expensive solutions to balding such as ‘hair banking‘ and conventional hair transplants, this latest procedure could be the least invasive and most affordable yet since the researchers say there is an “unlimited” supply of stem cells in humans which can be derived from a simple blood donation.Proper trials on humans may still be a few years off for this procedure but the potential for curing hair loss is looking bright with no end in solutions being presented. This particular stem cell discovery which creates natural-looking hair could be the most promising and affordable one yet.
