It’s been just over a month since the 2021 title-deciding Formula One race in Abu Dhabi, which saw Max Verstappen take an incredibly controversial win, denying Lewis Hamilton of a record-setting eighth world championship title.
RELATED: Max Verstappen Wins Formula One World Championship Wearing The Perfect Watch
We’re not going to discuss the events that went down in that race, but instead, we’re going to talk about something far more serious: Max Verstappen’s form whilst working out.
It’s no secret Formula One drivers need to keep themselves in peak physical condition, finding the perfect balance of being lightweight, yet still having enough muscle to withstand the high levels of g-force their bodies undergo during a race – we’ve even previously seen Verstappen himself looking rather uncomfortable using a machine specifically designed to improve the strength in his neck.
But a video Max posted to his personal Instagram account shows him performing a circuit workout that has us, and hundreds of people in the comments, confused. Max’s circuit includes single-arm dumbbell push presses, a great full body exercise; kettlebell Romanian deadlifts which improve hip flexibility and strengthen your glutes, and thoracic rotations to help open up the chest and improve mobility.
British fitness trainer and Under Armour ambassador Bradley Simmonds kicked off the comments with “No disrespect but let’s train properly.”
Other comments taking aim at Max’s poor form include “Lol what is this workout?” and “Bro, you need a personal trainer.”
DMARGE spoke to former NRL hotshot and founder of Flow Athletic, Ben Lucas, to find out exactly what Max is doing wrong in his workout, the potential consequences if he were to keep it up, as well as the right way to perform each exercise if you wanted to replicate them at home.
Firstly, Ben agrees that “his form is very off in this video.”
“The exercises are fine, but they need to be done better to not only ensure that Max gets results, but they keep him injury free.”
“The first exercise is the squat and one-arm press. In his squat, his knees are coming over his toes, which leaves his knees susceptible to getting injured, but also means that he is not getting much benefit through his glutes or quads, which is the point of a squat.”
“When squatting, your knees should never come over your toes. Instead, sit back into your squat like you would sit into a seat. Get as low as you can, then squeeze your way back up to standing.”
It should be noted that some personal trainers say it’s actually fine if your knees come over your toes a little bit, but that’s a debate for another day.
Ben adds: “With the press, I would recommend having two dumbbells and pushing them up at the same time if your squat form is not on point because that will keep your body more balanced. If your form is good though, the single arm press is very good for ensuring both sides of your body are working equally, rather than one side overcompensating for the weaker side.”
“The second exercise is a deadlift with a kettlebell. His curved back and neck and super straight legs are likely to leave him with a back, neck, shoulder and possibly even a hamstring injury.”
“To deadlift, hold the kettlebell in your hands while standing up straight. Rolle your shoulder back and down, and suck your abs in. As you start to lower into the deadlift, keep the straight form as mentioned above. Your back and neck should be straight, your abs should be tucked in.”
“As for the lower body, push your butt back as you would with a squat, and have a slight bend in your knees as you lower. As you raise yourself back up to standing, squeeze your glutes, reset to make sure your shoulders are back and abs are tight.”
“For the last exercise, thoracic rotation in quadruped (on all fours), again he needs to improve his posture. his neck is haunched which is really bad for the health of his neck and back.”
“First thing, rather than just being on all fours, sit slightly back towards your feet and that will help keep the lower back still and safe. Then put one hand behind your head, and slowly bring the elbow towards the opposite hand on the ground.”
“Then slowly come all the way up so your elbow is now facing the roof. Make sure your head goes with it, you don’t want to injure your neck. In Max’s video, he is going too fast to get the benefits, his posture is off and his range of movement isn’t quite hitting the mark.”
So, while Max might be an absolute wizard behind the wheel of a Formula One car, his know-how when it comes to working out seems to leave a lot to be desired. Just as we wouldn’t recommend you try imitating his driving when on the road, we also have to stress to not copy his workout at home but take Ben’s comments onboard instead.

Cars have always been political in Australia. Owning a car used to be the ultimate status symbol, but these days, more and more young people are turning their backs on cars – partly because public transport has improved across the country, partly because of the rising costs of car ownership, but also because it’s a political decision to reduce one’s carbon footprint.
The last twelve months have thrown that model into disarray, with many Australians jumping into cars and ditching public transport in order to avoid COVID, which is in itself a political decision (everything is political, baby!) But there’s another political dimension to the car versus public transport debate that is playing out across the world – and it seems to be affecting Australia.
As The Economist elaborates, in both Europe and America, city and state governments are increasingly trying to reduce car ownership in order to combat congestion and pollution – encouraging citizens to use public transport or other forms of mobility instead. But national leaders want more people to buy cars in order to help local auto makers.
The end result is mixed messaging where people are encouraged to buy more cars but find that they are increasingly unable to use them as they would like. It’s a battle where no one’s a winner.

The US is a worse offender than Europe on this count. America has always been a country where the car is king: one only has to think back to the General Motors streetcar conspiracy (as famously lampooned in Who Framed Roger Rabbit). Decades of policy decisions – as well as the inescapable geography of the country – have helped pushed car ownership to the detriment of public transport, despite America’s huge population.
RELATED: New York City Parking Spots Are Fetching Some Seriously Eye-Watering Prices
But then you have Australia. Australia, like the US, is a country where car ownership is virtually mandatory. While Australian cities mostly have American cities beat when it comes to quality of public transport, our cities’ insane urban sprawls – plus the gargantuan distances between major population centres, as well as the vastness of the Australian interior – necessitates vehicle ownership.
We’ve also developed a very American attitude when it comes to supporting (or rather, not supporting) public transport, both at a state and federal level. Melbourne might have its trams and Sydney might be in the midst of major public transport developments (many of which have run behind schedule, over-budget, were long overdue and don’t go far enough – but we digress…) but the reality is that truly substantive public transport projects are few and far between these days. We lack vision; lack political will.
It’s hard to understand why Australian political leaders have been so complacent about public transport in recent years when, unlike Europe or America, we have no local auto industry to support. It’s like we’ve imported American politics without importing an American reality. A one-sided battle, if you will.
WATCH Audi’s insane new electric car, the RS e-tron GT, below.
Of course, another dimension of this situation worth considering is how leaders in the US and Europe also want to promote electric vehicle ownership in order to support the development of EV technology. More and more new cars are EVs and while EVs might not help with congestion, they can help with emissions and pollution, particularly in cities. With China quickly becoming the world’s EV powerhouse, there’s also a strong incentive for US/European governments to get EV sales going so that they can remain globally competitive.
RELATED: American & Japanese Car Makers Are Going To Be Left Behind By China
This is also another area in which this debate doesn’t neatly translate over to an Australian context. Again, we have no local auto industry that we might want to help make competitive when it comes to EVs. All EVs in this country are imported – so while Australian governments might tacitly support car ownership, they have no incentive to promote EV ownership.
It’s a justification the Morrison Government has offered for their lack of federal incentives towards EV ownership, arguing that “reducing the total cost of ownership through subsidies would not represent value for the taxpayer, particularly as industry is rapidly working through technological developments to make battery electric vehicles cheaper.”
RELATED: Australia’s New Electric Car Strategy Is Embarrassingly Bad
That does make some sense. Why give foreign auto makers free money when they’ve already got a strong incentive to bring prices down? Let America and Europe (and other countries) bust their asses developing EV technology, we can just ride their coattails. But it’s a myopic argument that also ignores other factors, like emissions and rising fuel prices.

At the end of the day, Australia’s public transport systems just aren’t up to a global standard – despite not having the ‘excuse’ of needing to support a local manufacturing sector. We should be trying to support our cities in reducing congestion and pollution.
Australia will likely always be a country where car ownership is a necessity for a sizeable chunk of the population. But while we’re starting to recover from COVID (our recent challenges with the Omicron variant notwithstanding), we should refocus our attention on improving public transport systems across the country.

If you fancy yourself the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. then you’ll do well to clue up on where to find the best boxing gyms in Sydney. Whether you want to take up proper boxing training or just want to find a gym that offers boxing classes, we’ve got you covered.
If you’ve never thought of giving boxing a go before, there are plenty of reasons why you should start.
As a fitness discipline, boxing has numerous health benefits, including the burning of fat, increased cardio fitness and increased strength, and it’s even been proven to be a fantastic stress reliever. Letting your anger out with a punching bag or somebody’s face (legally, we might add) is a surefire way to calm you down.
Fortunately, for residents of Sydney, the City is home to a fair number of boxing gyms, all of which have the sole purpose of turning you into a champion fighter. But rather than have you go off and search for one, we’ve done the hard work for you (maybe not as hard as boxing itself, but you get what we mean) by curating a list of the very best boxing gyms Sydney has to offer.
In this Sydney boxing gyms story…
BX1 Gym
4/140 Military Road, Neutral Bay, 2089

BX1 in Neutral Bay takes the classic boxing gym and gives it a wholly modern twist. Everything here is state-of-the-art and uses the latest technologies. The changing rooms and showers, for example, are just as good (if not better) as your bathroom at home. Head downstairs to the training floor and you’ll be instantly hit with the realisation that this is a place where you’ll definitely be able to learn the art of boxing, with several punching bags lining the walls that all lead toward the main boxing ring.
Head coach Bill Temm has over 50 years of experience in combat sports and has found himself a teaching style that is both incredibly effective and incredibly fun. The rest of the coaching team are all well-experienced within boxing and combat sports, so you can expect a top-notch education.
Hustle Boxing
176 Victoria Street, Potts Point, 2011

Hustle Boxing isn’t your conventional boxing gym, in the fact that you don’t train to eventually take on one of your peers in fist-to-fist combat in a boxing ring. Instead, it takes the practice of boxing and turns it into a full-body workout that will have you sweating like you never have before.
In a similar fashion to other Instagrammable fitness studios, Hustle Boxing’s main floor isn’t too dissimilar to a Sydney nightclub, with little lighting, neon signs and pumping music. You take up a spot on the floor and follow along with the instructor at the front. Each spot has its own punching bag to strike, and classes last for 50 – 60 minutes. You’re also required to put your body through various floor exercises, ensuring you leave the gym a much fitter version of yourself.
Vault Boxing
Lachlan Street, Waterloo, 2017

Vault Boxing & Fitness is a gym that does put a strong focus on boxing and its related disciplines (think kickboxing and sparring) but adds in others such as strength, mobility and conditioning, which serve to back up what you learn in boxing classes. It’s a class-based gym, with each class being capped at 10-12 people, meaning you can be sure you’ll receive an intimate and effective education.
If boxing is your main aim, however, then Vault offers a ‘Learn to Box’ course, which places a strong emphasis on learning the very basics of boxing, before opening your eyes to further teachings. You’ll be reaching a pro-level in no time.
Undercard Boxing
82 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, 2010

Undercard works in a similar way to Hustle Boxing, in that it is a group-based fitness environment with your own dedicated, water-filled punching bag at your workout station. It also comes complete with a fully-fledged sound system that will make you think you’re in a Berlin nightclub.
Each day at Undercard offers up a different workout routine, changing from lower-body focused workouts one day, to upper body the next, and boxing & cardio another. If you want to hang up the boxing gloves you can always partake in Undercard’s strength and conditioning classes, which as with the boxing classes, change on a daily basis.
To really hone your boxing skills, you can sign up for Undercard’s boxing workshop with Australian Commonwealth and Olympic boxer Luke Jackson. The four-week course will see you progress from learning the fundamentals to sparring with the best.
If you’re interested in joining Undercard, you’ll want to know the boxing gym is relocating to Bondi in 2022.
Boxing Works
83 – 97 Darlinghurst Road, Potts Point, 2011

Boxing Works in Kings Cross is owned and operated by Larry Papadopolous, the wrestling skills coach for both the Sydney Roosters NRL team and the Sydney Swans AFL team. He knows his craft, then, and stresses that the entire coaching team at Boxing Works aren’t just some personal trainers who have passed exams to get their jobs.
Instead, they’ve competed in the events and disciplines they teach, so are well-versed in teaching you how to not only learn the correct boxing techniques but to avoid injury too. The Boxing Works gym is home to a centrally-located 5m boxing ring, 18 punch bags, as well as a full suite of cardio equipment, weights, wrestling mats and a power cage and lifting platform. So, not only will you be able to learn how to box, you’ll be able to bulk up into a heavyweight hitter.
If boxing doesn’t turn out to be your thing, you can enrol in Boxing Works’ BJJ, MMA, wrestling or Ju Jutsu classes.
Corporate Fitness Centre
36 – 38 Wentworth Avenue, Surry Hills, 2010

Corporate Fitness Centre welcomes people of any fitness level into the gym. It’s primarily a boxing gym, with several classes throughout the day and week, designed to teach the basics of boxing as well as more advanced techniques for those ready to progress to the next level. The main boxing floor plays host to a large number of punching bags, which envelop a four-metre boxing ring, as well as the floor area where classes take place.
Corporate also makes use of some of the very latest in feedback technology, with software being able to tell you how many punches you’re throwing, the intensity and the velocity, making it easy to see how you’re improving. For those who really want to take things to the next level, the Corporate Fighter package will put you through 12 weeks of boxing training where you will work towards competing in an actual fight with a fellow first-timer.
Bondi Boxing Gym
284 Bondi Road, Bondi Beach, 2026

For those living further out in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Bondi Boxing Gym could be your new go-to. Not only does Bondi Boxing Gym teach boxing from beginner to advanced levels, but you can also engage in some MMA action by way of Muay Thai boxing too. Fitness Boxing is on the cards as well, which adds in more conditioning elements to provide a full-body workout.
Head boxing trainer and owner Maydad Ronen is an experienced boxer and trainer, having taught in both America and New Zealand, with the US Youth Olympic boxing program being a current client. His gym is very traditional in its layout and design – there’s no Berlin nightclub to be found here – with a central boxing ring and some punching bags hanging around the room.
12RND Fitness
Shop 1.01, 150 Pacific Highway North, North Sydney, 2060

Being named after the maximum number of rounds in a boxing match, 12RND Fitness has a unique approach to boxing workouts. Each workout comprises 12, 3-minute rounds with a 30-second rest between each. You’re free to sit out any rounds if you wish, with a traffic light system letting know either when it’s safe to join in, or when a fight is about to end.
This traffic light system runs continuously throughout the day, so there aren’t any set class times, but whenever you choose to turn up, you can be guaranteed several rounds of circuit training. It’s not just boxing you’ll be doing here, though, as the gyms are also stocked with a range of other fitness equipment to ensure your entire body can build the muscle needed to keep you fighting until the very last round.
12RND is a franchise (there are 78 in total in Australia), so there’s a good chance there will be a studio near you. For the purposes of this piece, we’ve singled out the North Sydney studio.
PCYC North Sydney
2/6B Figtree Drive, Sydney Olympic Park, 2127

PCYC North Sydney is a Police Citizens Youth Club, a charity-based organisation to help support vulnerable and disadvantaged youngsters. For just a small fee, anyone can join and take part in a range of boxing classes (not just youngsters). There are a number of clubs dotted all over Sydney, but the North Sydney venue is one of just a few that service Northern Sydney.
With boxing fitness, advanced boxing and even women’s only boxing classes, PCYC could be the place to turn you into a real champion.

Conor McGregor might not be the best role model when it comes to keeping your temper (and he’ll probably never make it as a trolley boy either), but when it comes to fitness he is full of useful insights that can motivate us to do more (or do better) in the gym (from workout style to his surprisingly helpful advice on nailing the perfect pull up).
Speaking of which, this morning he came out with a challenge which will sort the wheat from the weak, taking to Instagram with a video of a type of chin-up which only, in McGregor’s words, you can only do if you’re “real.”
“Only the real can do the wide grip,” McGregor said, accompanied by a video of him doing wide grip pull ups (10, to be precise).
Video: Conor McGregor Does Wide Grip Pull Ups
Though McGregor (and his McGregor Fast company) might have you think this is because McGregor is “built different,” the reality is any self respecting gym goer should be able to work their way up to doing 10 wide grip chin ups.
What’s more; you don’t need super quick reflexes or gifted genetics to benefit from them. The benefits of wide grip chin ups are numerous and varied. Before we into that though, we should explain how to do the perfect wide grip chin up.
Healthline explains: “The wide-grip pullup is an upper-body strength movement that targets your back, chest, shoulders, and arms. It also gives your core muscles a pretty fantastic workout. Including wide-grip pullups in your overall fitness routine can help increase your strength in other movements, such as the lat pulldown and shoulder press.”
Sold? Here’s how you do one with the correct technique.
“Start by standing underneath a pullup bar, with your back and spine straight. Reach up and grab the bar with each hand. Your thumbs should be pointing toward each other, and your grip should be wider than your body. When positioned correctly, your arms and torso should form a ‘Y.’ To be more specific, each arm should be 30 to 45 degrees from your body, but no more than a 45-degree angle,” (Healthline).
Next up: “Look straight ahead and pull your body upwards towards the bar. Pause, then lower yourself back down to the original position,” (Healthline). If you find it too hard to even do one, then have a go on a weight assisted machine, putting your knees on the support, and gradually reducing the support weight until you can lift your own bodyweight. Once you are knocking them out with ease, you can make things more challenging by wearing a weight vest, or attatching weight plates to a harness (or attatching them to you in some other safe way).
RELATED: This Outrageous Ab Workout Guarantees Six Pack Success
Now you know how to do a wide grip pull up, you might like to know their benefits. First of all, they really work your back muscles (including the trapezius, rhomboids, and teres major and minor muscles), which are often neglected. On top (or rather, in front) of that, wide grip pull-ups work your upper chest in a way normal pull ups or chin ups don’t.
Wide grip pull-ups stimulate your pecs and teres minor muscles, helping give you that Greek sculpture look we’re sure you’ve been secretly coveting. Oh and it doesn’t end there. Wide grip pull-ups improve your grip strength in a slightly different way to other chin ups, because they use a pronated grip (your palms face away from you throughout the exercise).
This outward facing grip is great for building muscles in your hands. But if you would like to sewitch things up, for a focused forearm workout you can switch your grip to a underhand grip, and do wide grip chin-ups.
The ball’s in your court. You might not get “McGregor fast” but you should, practicing wide grip chin ups, certainly get stronger.

There’s nothing Michael Bay likes more than a car chase… Except maybe when those cars turn into robots. And then explode. The 56-year-old action movie director, famous for films such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island and the Transformers series, is a noted revhead. Not only does he fill his flicks with cool cars, but he also owns a bunch of sweet rides too: his garage filled with everything from Bentleys and Ferraris to Cadillacs and Camaros. But there’s one car that isn’t his garage any more: the 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 from his first feature-length film, Bad Boys. The iconic sports car, which Bay sold to a friend years ago, actually just went under the hammer in Florida by Mecum Auctions for a huge sum over the weekend – and Bay’s not happy about it, sounding off on Instagram:
“Can you f—ing believe my personal Porsche I put in Bad Boys 1 – I sold for $60k to a friend – today just sold at a car auction for $1,300,000! Boy was I stupid not to keep it!”
Check out the Porsche in question below.
Owned by Will Smith’s character Mike Lowrey in the films, the 964-generation 911 Turbo 3.6 was only sold for two years from 1993 to 1994 and was one of the most powerful road-going, air-cooled 911s ever made. Light and powerful, making around 265kW, the 911 Turbo 3.6 was capable of 0-100km/h in just over 4 seconds – more than enough to chase down any baddies.Less than 1,500 were ever made, making it particularly rare and desirable – the Bad Boys connection aside. You could easily expect to pay over $200,000 for a nice example, even more for rarer 3.6 S versions or the particularly sexy ‘Flachbau’ examples, which resemble the later 993-generation 911.RELATED: ‘Squid Game’ Star Celebrates Success With Beautiful Vintage Porsche PickupIf you want to own your very own Michael Bay car, you’re in luck: the man himself has teamed up with vintage supercar specialists Curated to sell a collection of cars from the Transformers series, including a Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang that ‘played’ the characters Bumblebee and Barricade respectively, as well as a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and a Lamborghini Aventador. The four cars are being offered as one package (can’t just buy one), and come complete with original Transformers movie footage and documentation. The price? $2 million. A bargain, considering his 911 went for $1.3 million…Read Next

You don’t always have to buy new when updating your wardrobe. Instead, you can take old clothes to a clothing alterations store to repair them or resize them.
Picture it, if you go to put a pair of pants on one morning, or you dust off your finest dinner jacket for your next black-tie event but find they no longer fit – whether it’s because you’ve lost or put on weight – then it can be all too easy to decide to throw them out and buy replacements.
Yet, with the state of the environment being at the forefront of most conversations within the fashion industry right now, getting your clothes altered is a far more viable alternative.
Taking whatever items of clothing no longer fit properly to an alternations service can give them a new lease of life – in the same way getting a pair of shoes repaired can keep them walking many more miles – and the result is a tailored fit that will hug your figure expertly (and potentially accentuate those new biceps of yours).
Of course, trusting your beloved wardrobe of clothing with someone else can be a little daunting, which is why we’ve put together a list of the best clothing alteration services in Sydney together, so you can be sure that the shop you take your suits, shirts or jeans to, will reward you with a stylish new look.

Formula One is one of the hardest sports in the world to compete in, not only because it’s so physically and mentally demanding, but because it’s so hard to access.By convention, there are only 10 teams and 20 drivers in F1 – that’s not a lot of room. F1 drivers typically start their racing careers very young in go-karts, and then move their way up the formulae – Formula 4, 3, 2 or other formats like Indycar in the US or DTM in Germany – before they get a chance at F1. It’s very, very competitive. On top of that, you need a lot of money. Motorsports aren’t cheap, and most drivers who make it to F1 have the support of either an F1 team’s driver academy or big-name sponsors who’ll help bankroll their efforts. But what if you didn’t need to spend money on expensive equipment? What if you could instead hone your skills on driving simulators and eSports, and then graduate to the big time? Well, that’s exactly what one young driver has successfully pulled off, in a move that’s sure to be an absolute gamechanger for motorsports and eSports.Cem Bölükbaşı, a 23-year-old driver and eSports athlete from Istanbul, made headlines around the world when it was revealed earlier this week that he would be racing in F2, the main feeder series for F1, for 2022. That makes him the first gamer ever to go from F1 eSports to real-life racing, as well as the first Turk to compete in F2.
“I think it’s also very important to be the first gamer to do this, because it can give people hope. If people see that one person can do it, they will believe they can do it as well. If I can go from F1 eSports to F2, I think anyone can.”
It’s a remarkable turn of events that demonstrates how much momentum eSports has gained in recent years. It’s the kind of things kids dream about: being able to turn being good at a video game into a career. This also opens up the pathway for other eSports athletes to make the jump from games to real cars in the future, especially if Bölükbaşı does well in F2.RELATED: Daniel Ricciardo’s ‘Carefree Attitude’ Is His Greatest Strength… & WeaknessOver the last two years, F1 and the FIA have made a concerted effort to elevate F1 eSports, in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the effect it’s had on the F1 calendar. This was especially noticeable in 2020, when many races, including the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, were cancelled: F1 filled the holes in the calendar by aggressively promoting their eSports series, to great success.
Still, Bölükbaşı joining the F2 grid is a seismic shift for world motorsports as well as eSports. Not only does it demonstrate the validity and influence of sim racing, but could also help make F1 (and other tiers of motorsport) become less of a “billionaire boy’s club”; less dependent on access to expensive machinery and track time.RELATED: Upcoming Australian Talent Highlights Massive Problem With Formula OneIf he does well in F2, it could see him make the jump to F1 as well – which would be huge. It seems that no one can refuse Leonardo DiCaprio; not even fellow actor, Jonah Hill. While working together on Adam McKay’s Netflix movie Don’t Look Up, DiCaprio insisted that Hill give the Star Wars television series, The Mandalorian a go.“I don’t watch sci-fi and stuff like that… Leo made me watch The Mandalorian when we were making Don’t Look Up,” Hill told W Magazine. However, Hill didn’t like DiCaprio’s show recommendation at all…“I just didn’t give a fuck because I didn’t know anything that it was about.”The one exception was Baby Yoda, of course; just like the majority of the internet when The Mandalorian first premiered, Hill found him “so cute.”

An example of the dismissal notice having already been leaked online.“You failed to complete the verification process and our records show that you do not have an approved (exemption),” reads an email Nike sent to one employee last week, The Oregonian reports. “As a result, you are not in compliance with the Policy and your employment is scheduled to be terminated on Saturday, January 15, 2022.”
Of course, some people aren’t happy about this decision – just like they weren’t happy about Nike backing Colin Kaepernick or making a sports hijab. Guess if they really feel strongly about it, they can just buy some Adidas…Read Next
