Swanning around the supermarket barefoot. Eating a meat pie for morning tea. Parking your Range Rover like a Pelican. There are a lot of things that you see in Australia, which you don’t in America.Speaking of which… a recent set of images from Eastern Suburbs based photographer Eugene Tan showcases yet another classic Aussie ritual, which we reckon is worth sharing. The images show Australians, on the cusp of winter, revelling in water which (in our biased opinion) is probably a bit too frigid for our friends across the pond.

While not every Australian does this (not everyone lives next to the beach), this winter act of worship is so jettisoned into the Australian psyche that there are Instagram accounts you can follow to get your daily dose if you can’t make it down, like Tan’s @aquabumps. Further examples include @morningbondi and @sproutdaily.In any case, Tan took to Instagram on Thursday to share a bunch of photos, which show people enjoying the Eastern Suburbs’ Bronte beach, despite the conditions being far from pristine.“Tad junkie, quite dark and with a new SE swell energy,” he captioned the post. “I had a look around Bronte, for a change of scenery.”Comments rolled in from: “The mood of the day’s elements, perfectly captured,” to “I wanna be as chill as the guy reading his book at the shoreline.”

This guy appeared to be a hit, with another commenting: “Love the guy reading .”This isn’t the first time a coastal photographer has captured this morning Aussie ritual. Last month it was Amaury Tréguer (aka @morningbondi) pointing out the difference between Aussie and French style.RELATED: Parisian Photographer Captures ‘Weird’ Beach Habit Australians Think Is NormalAcross the bridge, Northern Beaches photographer @sproutdaily has also captured this cool habit, last year in winter writing: “A slice of ocean served chilled. It’s winter after all and I get the feeling we’re going to miss it when it’s gone. 5 days left! Better get in!”.

As DMARGE wrote last year, in the USA, despite many regions enjoying similar temperatures to Australia’s East Coast, winter swimming (as far as we know) is more the domain of fitness fanatics and is less popular among your average Joes.To put it another way: we can’t imagine too many swim groups like Manly’s Bold & Beautiful (where 60-year-olds smuggle their budgies across from Shelly to Manly every day, some pre-dawn) in America. Though we are always happy to be corrected.Though Tan’s Bronte photo of the guy reading next to the water could be completely unrelated… it’s also nice to see Australians embracing a casual kind of meditation, which shows you don’t need to spend millions on an app to carve out some me-time each day (see: ‘Unfairly Maligned’ Bondi Trend The Rest Of The World Can Learn From). We’ll drink an oat milk latte to that…

Ghosting. We’ve all either been on the receiving end of it, or been the one doing the ghosting. It’s a cruel dating trend, but one that we imagine has cemented its place in the dating books for many more years to come. For the uninitiated, ghosting is term given when one person just suddenly stops talking to the other – whether it be over text message, phone call or via a dating app – without giving any reason, or letting the other person know they see the relationship going nowhere. While dating apps such as Tinder have previously revealed that 1 in 4 Australians promise to banish ghosting from their vocabulary and be more open and honest with their in-app matches – perhaps in response to the year that was 2020, when an importance on keeping strong relationships with people you couldn’t see everyday was brought to the fore – it’s still a tactic we envisage many will continue to employ.A 2018 study (via Insider) that surveyed 1,300 people, found that 1 in 4 people had been ghosted, and a fifth of the participant group admitted to ghosting someone themselves. While the stats don’t reveal which sex is more likely to be the one doing the ghosting, we would argue that man receive more of the blame. To help relieve some of the pressure loaded onto them, the men of Reddit have revealed some of the reasons they chose to ghost the girls they were talking to for some time.Their admissions are refreshingly honest, and provide an insight into how some men find some double standards too much to bear.“It began to feel like a chore”, says one user.“She didn’t seem interested in me like she used to. I began to feel like texting her wasn’t worth my time. I decided I would respond to any text she sent, but I would completely stop imitating conversation/questions (in part so I could see what would happen) because it felt like I was doing it all.”
“Haven’t had a response since, and the above statements became more true than I wished.”
View this post on Instagram
Or, as is the case for some other commenters on the Reddit thread, the expectation to keep conversation flowing wasn’t worth the effort.“I could no longer remember why I’d been interested in her. It’d become sort of a habit. I’d contact her, she’d somehow kill the conversation or I’d have to do all the work. Happened gradually, didn’t notice at first. And then came that day when the thought just popped into my head,”
“Why are you making this effort? Why are you interested in this girl?”
“And I couldn’t for the life of me find a decent answer.”Others put across their grievances with dating apps, and the struggles of actually being able to talk to someone on them.“Got match [sic] with a cute girl on tinder, asking her question to get to know her better and I’m getting is: ‘k’, ‘lol’, ‘yes’ or ‘haha’. Like WTF, after a while I just straight up asked her if she was a bot.”Another common theme creeping through is men tend to match with women who only seem to want to talk about themselves, and change their mood when the guy wants to talk about his day.“When did it become the guys duty to carry 100% of the conversation at all times? Girls, try carrying the conversation sometimes. We want to talk about our day too.”Stay tuned for the other side of the debate. Reddit is sure to provide.

Today, if the U.S. President needs to get anywhere, they’ll jump onboard Air Force One. Not the name of a specific aeroplane, but the air traffic call sign given to the aircraft carrying the President. It’s essentially a flying version of the White House.
Currently, two Boeing VC-25As are used for the Air Force One aircraft, themselves highly modified versions of Boeing 747-200B planes – complete with a full suite of telecommunications equipment, TVs, a press room and even a mile-high version of the Oval Office – although these are slated to be replaced by Boeing 747-8 in the near future.
The President even gets the luxury of Marine One, a fully-equipped helicopter to ferry them around whenever a plane isn’t essential.
But, such luxuries weren’t always afforded to whoever was in charge of the most powerful country in the world. Even though the first presidential aircraft came during Roosevelt’s administration, remaining in service from 1933 to 1939, Presidents have had to rely on other forms of transportation to get to and from inaugurations, campaign rallies and any other important meetings.
According to CNN Travel, the Presidents of previous years have often relied on train travel to ferry them around, and current incumbent Joe Biden is a keen advocate for the railway, racking up some “two million miles on Amtrak alone.”
But even that was luxurious compared to earlier Presidents’ trips. While it’s difficult to find concrete evidence, it can be safely assumed that George Washington, the first ever U.S. President, would travel around on horseback – it’s claimed he had a huge admiration for the noble steed, with one of his favourite horses being one called Nelson.
As CNN Travel relates, the first American-built steam-powered train came in 1829 with the debut of the Tom Thumb. While this particular locomotive didn’t enter full production, it was convincing enough for railroad companies to spring up and start laying some tracks. President Andrew Jackson then became the first in power to travel around by train.
But it wasn’t until 1862 and the administration of President Lincoln that train travel really took off, when he signed the Pacific Railroad Act, which paved the way for the first railway to link the west and east coasts of America. While Lincoln got to enjoy the railroads on a whistle-stop tour for the campaign that led to his electoral win, he never got to travel in The United States, a railroad car built especially for the President (essentially the rail faring version of Air Force One). At least, he didn’t travel in it alive, anyway.
The railway proved to be invaluable to whoever took office during the 19th and 20th centuries, allowing them to attend events and give speeches to voters.
According to nps.gov, “U.S. Car No.1 is the only private coach railroad car specifically designed for the president of the United States. The Pullman Company built the Ferdinand Magellan in 1928, and refurbished the car and presented it (dubbed U.S. Car No.1) to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 18, 1942.”
“Both President Roosevelt and President Truman used the car extensively for state business, reelection campaigns, and personal trips. President Dwight D. Eisenhower briefly used U.S. Car No. 1 until air travel on Air Force I began to replace U.S. Car No. 1 as the preferred means of transport.”
“In 1941 in the midst of World War II, President Roosevelt consented to the urging of aides to have a private railcar reconfigured for his safety and comfort and that of future presidents. Originally built by the Pullman Company as the Ferdinand Magellan, the car was part of a fleet of six luxury cars, all named for famous explorers and available for private charter,” nps.gov explains.
“Armor-plated with 5/8-inch steel on the car’s roof, floor, and sides and fitted with three-inch thick windows and two escape hatches, the refurbished car weighed 285,000 pounds, double its original weight. U.S. Car No. 1 is the heaviest railcar ever built in the United States.”
“The 84-feet long, 15-feet high, and 10-feet wide train car, contains the presidential suite, two guest rooms, a dining room/conference room, and an observation lounge. Each room in the car has a telephone. The elimination of one of the usual five staterooms allowed for a spacious observation lounge, decorated with cream-colored woodwork, green carpeting and light brown, tufted wall covering resembling leather.”
“Between the observation lounge and the dining room are four bedrooms. The presidential suite consists of two separate bedrooms with a connecting bathroom. The first lady’s room has a single bed that is larger than a standard Pullman berth, a dresser, closet and washbasin. The connecting bath has a shower, bathtub, toilet, and wash basin.”
Not to be outdone, the president’s bedroom is, nps.gov, states: “the largest of the bedrooms and contains a commode chair to accommodate President Roosevelt’s disability needs. Exhibited in the room is a special wheelchair built for President Roosevelt’s use onboard the railcar. The chair is narrow enough to fit through the doors and hallways of the railcar. The other two bedrooms are identical guestrooms, each containing an upper and lower berth, vanity, closet, dresser, washbasin, toilet, and medicine cabinet.”
“The lower berth converts into a double seat with a table, while the upper berth retracts into the ceiling.”
Finally, the dining/conference room is the biggest room in the carriage, furnished with a large solid mahogany table that seats eight. This is where presidents would entertain official guests (like Sir Winston Churchill).
“This room also contains the small writing desk the presidents used for official business,” nps.gov states. “Displayed in a cabinet above the desk are the china, silverware, and other memorabilia from presidential use of the car. The pantry and steward’s quarters are at the end of the dining room divided by a door and hallway. Here the staff prepared meals for the presidential party, and had separate small spaces for themselves and storage.”
As we mentioned, frequent use of Train Car One has slowly been phased out in favour of air travel, primarily for its convenience, speed and relative safety.
While Joe Biden remains a fan of rail travel, which according to CNN Travel can largely be attributed to the fact his wife and 13-month-old daughter Naomi were killed in a car crash, now he’s got the most important job on the planet, he naturally has to succumb to an increase in protection much of the time – and take the plane.

The Legend of John enters yet another exciting chapter with this latest sartorial experiment. The 42-year-old crooner (real name John Stephens) is not only one of the most talented musicians alive today: a singer, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and EGOT (i.e. an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner)… But he’s also one of the most fashionable male celebrities on the planet, serving up style inspiration even more impressive than his vocal range.Take this 1950s-esque souvenir jacket he rocked on the red carpet, this tasty overcoat he paired with a very retro mohair sweater or this exceptionally dapper leather flight jacket he wore during an episode of The Voice, the successful TV talent show where he’s one of the four main judges.Speaking of The Voice, Legend’s latest appearance on the show heralded yet another winning fit – one that more boring men would be too intimidated to wear. With some help from his talented stylist, David Thomas, Legend wowed the crowds in a warm pink Alexander McQueen suit, which he paired with some Chuck Taylor-esque sneakers from the same brand plus a Comme des Garçons t-shirt and his gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph: a truly luxurious and fashion-forward ensemble.

In 2021 you’d think men would have abandoned their prejudices against pink, but many are still reluctant to wear the apparently ‘feminine’ shade. It’s a shame because pink is a rather versatile colour to base an outfit around – case in point, Legend right here. It’s perfect for a smart-casual look like this one: summary, playful but not too garish like a bright green or orange might be, for example. Pink also suits a wide variety of complexions and builds, unlike some other colour palettes.RELATED: How To Wear Pink, No Matter The OccasionOther celebrity style icons who have been rocking pink suits lately include fellow musicians Justin Bieber and Finneas O’Connell (Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator) as well as actor Colman Domingo, among others.Aside from The Voice, Legend’s other big hustle has been building his own wine brand, Legend Vineyard Exclusive, in collaboration with acclaimed Napa Valley winery Raymond Vineyards. He’s not the only celebrity who’s entered the wine game, either: check out Daniel Ricciardo’s tasty new collaboration with St Hugo.

Australian man Jimmy Niggles has just shaved – in one piece – his ‘million dollar beard’ for charity.Inspired to start non-profit charity Skin Check Champions (formerly known as Beard Season) after close mate Wes Bonny passed away from a Melanoma at 26 years old, Jimmy has been growing his beard out – and encouraging men around Australia to do the same each winter – for 11 years. The goal is to encourage people to get more regular skin checks and to win the race against melanoma through early detection.Jimmy founded the movement in 2010 and since then the humble challenge has grown into a global movement. The only person who has trimmed Jimmy’s Ned Kelly style beard during that whole time has been barefoot magnate Richard Branson. Other adventures Jimmy’s beard has had is lifting up a fully grown man and being reproduced as tattoos.

Skin Check Champions shared the scenes on their Instagram story and profile. In the final moments leading up to the cut, Jimmy looked at the camera and said: “mate, we’ve just done the final coatings on the million-dollar bear and we’re doing the live auctions now. Then we’re leading up to the big shave.”
Then came the climax – the beard being shorn off. As Blake exclaimed, “It’s really starting to move as one” and comments like, “It’s like cutting an umbilical cord” came flying in.Check it out for yourself below.“This is literally making history.”

As Cancer Council NSW’s Skin Cancer Prevention Manager Liz King recently told DMARGE: “In NSW, men over the age of 40 are 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed and 2.5 times more likely to die of melanoma than women of a similar age.”
“Worryingly, men generally have poorer sun protection behaviours than women and are more likely to engage in behaviours that increase their UV exposure and skin cancer risk; they’re more likely to be outdoors, less likely to use SPF30+ sunscreen, and more likely to have tanned skin (a sign of UV damage).”
There is hope, however. King also told DMARGE, “We know that 95% of skin cancers are caused by UV radiation, making it highly preventable if we take care of our skin using five forms of sun protection (clothing, sunnies, hats, sunscreen, shade).”
“Having each other’s backs will ultimately reduce skin cancer risk and save lives.”
Speaking of having each other’s backs: we can only hope stories like the one below continue flowing in (and as this project goes from strength to strength, they should), as Jimmy has hit his long time target of raising a million dollars for a targeted national skin check program.

As for Jimmy’s beard: it has been captured in a glass dome and golden plinth, and given to the highest bidder.

Nothing makes an insecure straight man more uncomfortable than being asked to hold his girlfriend’s handbag.Harry Styles seems to be on a mission to change that.Stepping out in London’s O2 Arena, Harry Styles just rocked a damn fine Gucci fit, and looked bloody good while doing so.The successful solo artist, actor and global megastar has found himself a trustworthy ally in Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele, with the man at the helm of the Italian fashion house often using Styles as a walking mannequin to show off upcoming collections. One such collection is Aria, an upcoming wardrobe of ready-to-wear clothing for men and women, which draws heavy inspiration from all things sartorial. It’s a bold collection no doubt, with Harry Styles rocking a matching suit jacket and pants for his appearance at the 2021 Brit Awards, held on Wednesday, May the 12th at The O2 in London. What really caught our eye this time though is the former One Directioner’s choice in accessories.

Seeing Styles in head-to-toe Gucci is nothing new. Previously donning lace outfits and Mary Jane shoes, Harry is proof that it’s all about confidence when stepping out to make style statements. But his inclusion of a handbag (again) has now got media speculating this look could spread to the public. The handbag is slated to be the start of a new men’s fashion trend.RELATED: Cryptic Harry Styles Statement Sparks Massive Masculinity Debate On TwitterWe’ve become so accustomed to Styles’ unique sense of style, that seeing him posing with a handbag isn’t as surprising as it may have been just a few years ago. Spit out your Peroni, burn your boardshorts; stomp on your designer sunnies: calls for Waverley Council to ban beach volleyball from Bondi and Tamarama are gaining momentum. It’s the most un-Eastern Suburbs thing ever.Call us idealists, but one of Bondi’s defining features is its mix of briefcases and backpackers (something captured magnificently by Instagram accounts like @onlyinbondi).
View this post on Instagram
But take away the fun and all you have is sand and concrete. That’s seemingly what some desire, with news.com.au reporting: “residents raised concerns the sport is too dangerous for the popular beaches amid fears children could be hit by a flying volleyball.”Others reckon it’s worth the risk.Waverley Council has put a feedback form online to see which way the wind is blowing.“Concerns have been raised by members of our community regarding the location of beach volleyball courts and compliance with council’s rules of play,” a spokesman for Waverley Council said. The council is enquiring as to whether players are following existing rules, whether those rules need to be changed, and whether the number of courts needs to change. The consultation process will finish on May the 17th.
“Leave it be and allow beach goers to have fun for crying out loud.”
Another wrote: “The concern is the number of courts on some days and whilst it does not bother me I was asked to sign a petition.”
“When there are 2 maybe 3 courts at Tamarama it looks good but on the days when you see 6 or 7 and that does not happen often locals are being hassled wanting to access the beach.”
This user was in the minority though. Most said the proposal was ridiculous. Many characterised the residents behind it as rich old snobs.
“Tell these people to stay off the beach, then they will be safe. They might be worried they will drown in the water, so it is in their best interests to avoid the beach at all costs!”“Swimming is dangerous as kids might drown.. quick let’s protest about swimming at the beach…( this pathetic excuse as what might happen ) is ridiculous…..”“I don’t live anywhere even near Bondi but they don’t need that crap there it’s a beach for all to use not some richyrich snobmob.”
Olympic gold medalist Kerri Pottharst spoke to the Daily Telegraph about the saga, “slamming” the call.RELATED: Parisian Photographer Captures ‘Weird’ Beach Habit Australians Think Is NormalAnother Facebook user, on the Amalfi Coast Bondi Facebook page, which also shared the news, wrote, “You guys must know that anything slightly progressive or fun WIILL NOT BE TOLERATED, EVER!”The original post by Amalfi Beach Club Bondi also supported locals’ right to volleyball.“There is a push by some to ban beach volleyball at Bondi,” it read. “Please fill in this Council survey to support the continuation of volleyball on the beach. Let’s show Waverly Council the majority of Australians are culturally diverse and tolerant.”

“Don’t let a minority dictate how the rest of us enjoy the beach, even if you don’t play volleyball yourself. Volleyball ads vibrancy and there is plenty of room for us all on the sand. The beach belongs to everyone. Please hurry as the survey closes on 17 May 2021.”The link to the petition can be found here. This isn’t the first time Bondi’s peculiar mindset and community attitude has come under the microscope. As DMARGE reported last year, the suburb has become the Sydney media’s perennial punching bag.Convinced not everyone who lives in the Eastern Suburbs is a smug bastard, DMARGE has previously called Dr Lars Madsen, a clinical psychologist who sits on the board of the mental health charity The Mindshift Foundation, to understand the psychology of living in Bondi.
View this post on Instagram
Lars told us living in a suburb with a reputation can affect you: “What we know is that as people… we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people no matter whether we like it or not.”RELATED: Psychologist Explains The Mindset Of Living In Bondi“If you’re in a culture or environment where you have a lot of high achieving people dressing in a particular way or talking about things in a particular way, we will seek to align ourselves to them,” Lars says.
“The same way if you’re in a culture where people are taking drugs, drinking alcohol, not working, we kind of drift that way as well in terms of our attitudes – there’s lots of psychological research that shows that [this] happens – the environment affects people’s behaviour.”
So: could moving to Bondi turn you into someone who wears activewear? Someone who feels entitled to live it up? Someone who feels obliged to live it up? We put the question to Lars: “Can moving area change your mindset?”“Absolutely,” Lars told us. “But it depends on who they associate with and who they identify with – if they go to a different area where they are surrounded by different attitudes and different people… then people will gravitate to the norm of that mindset and the people around them.”

In terms of Bondi specifically? “Yes, I think so. I think people go and live in Bondi and have an expectation that it is something and that maybe affects how they are, and how they interact with others – probably just like people go to Toorak in Melbourne much the same way.”RELATED: ‘Dog Act’: Provocative Video Reveals Hidden Culture War Among Australian Drivers The irony is that though Bondi is usually slammed for being rich, arrogant and homogenous, it’s now making headlines for being divided (and for standing up for #thepeople).Crazy times.

Cars aren’t just a method of getting from A to B. They’re an extension of one’s personality and a canvas upon which you can let your creative passions fly.
That’s something that’s been brought into focus over the last twelve months in particular, as more and more Australians have been investing in performance vehicles in lieu of international travel. Tahiti might look nice this time of year but a stunning German sports car tailored to your exact specifications? That might be even nicer.
Enter Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur: perhaps the most exciting innovation in high-end motoring since Butzi Porsche first penned the 911 back in 1963.

Something that’s always set Porsche apart from other marques is their meticulous attention to detail. It’s this dual character of absolute precision mixed with sporting liveliness that’s always attracted people to the brand – and their Exclusive Manufaktur is perhaps the purest expression of this dichotomy.
Exclusive Manufaktur is a car personalisation program non pareil. Every car in Porsche’s expansive lineup can get the Exclusive treatment, which gives customers virtually free reign over the car’s appearance.
From interior accents to customised wheels; even choosing the type of thread you’d like Porsche’s artisans to construct the car’s seats – with over 700 additional options available to customers across all model lines, the sky’s the limit.
Take this 911 Targa 4S that’s freshly arrived in Sydney. Its sports exhaust, high-gloss black wheels and its Forest Green exterior – a custom colour – strike a dramatic figure, but it’s the car’s interior that really shows off the depth of Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur program.
A two-tone leather interior in Slate Grey and Crayon with deviating stitching in Agave Green immediately catch the eye, but myriad Exclusive Manufaktur details are littered throughout this stunning ‘Neunelfer’, such as the additional stitching added to the air-conditioning vents, steering wheel column and dashboard. Even the key fob comes leather-wrapped in Agave Green.

This 911 Targa 4S gives you but a taste of the wide range of customisation options Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur offers. It’s a thoroughly modern approach to high-end automobile ownership that’s unlike anything else on the market.
Porsche has a long history of personalising automobiles. Indeed, the marque owes its genesis to Ferdinand Porsche’s frustration that he could not find a car that met his incredibly high personal standards, famously relating “I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of. So I decided to build it myself.”
Individualisation has always been a part of Porsche’s DNA. By necessity, the very first Porsche sports cars were hand-built, but even in Porsche’s early days their dedication to customer customisation was unprecedented. Some oddities out of Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen included a 356 covered in faux fur and three 911 models with ‘kangaroo cages’ that competed in the London-Sydney rally.

Later years saw Porsche further refine their special requests programme, with iconic models such as the Slantnose 930S, the 959 ‘Komfort’ and Carlo Rampazzi’s famous burnt orange 996 Turbo Cabriolet emblematic of Porsche’s panache for personalisation.
These days the process of customising your new Porsche has never been more straightforward or comprehensive.
Whether you enjoy the traditional, luxurious experience of building your car at a Porsche dealership or take advantage of Porsche’s truly impressive online configurators, the process of making your dream Porsche is both smooth, exquisite and, quite simply, fun.
And that’s what it should be all about.
Discover the depth of Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur experience for yourself online or at your nearest Porsche dealership.

Let’s be real for a second: every Australian faces an unreasonable pressure in life to love a good steak. But perhaps we should open our minds more to alternative food sources.Speaking of which: Australian celebrity chef Tobie Puttock recently posted a chart on his Instagram story which shows red kidney beans provide you with many of the benefits (in some cases more) of beef.

Though we don’t fancy telling anyone what they should or shouldn’t be eating (we leave that to our nutrition experts), this is some serious food for thought. That all being said, we have seen similar claims moderated by the likes of nutrition coach Max Lugavere, who is a strong believer in the power of meat (see: Instagram posts below) as part of a balanced diet.
