Samsung’s Foldable Phone Is Just The Overpriced Hype Your Life Needs Right Now
Samsung’s Foldable Phone Is Just The Overpriced Hype Your Life Needs Right Now

Let’s face it, Samsung isn’t a company to shy away from innovation. In 2002 a Samsung flip-phone went to market with the first camera that could be rotated from rear to front facing, essentially bringing the dreaded selfie to life.

In 2012 the Galaxy Beam was a typical Samsung smartphone but with a projector built-in. Then in 2013 Samsung stuck a proper camera lens to the back of a Galaxy S4 phone with a 10x optical zoom. This year, Samsung takes innovation to bold new levels.

So What’s The Hype About?

Announced in San Francisco this week, the Galaxy Fold takes a phone and a tablet and wedges them together.

If you’re a fan of books, this Samsung smartphone with a 4.6inch display unfolds like a small book to reveal a 7.3 inch display that carries the experience from the front screen. Yes, Samsung has a phone which has a folded display in the middle. When looking at the unfolded device there is no crease, no visible gaps or separators, it’s one seamless display that will make you ponder: “But…how?”.

There are also three cameras on the back of the device, two more on the inside and one on the front cover. That’s six cameras in total, so no bouts of blatant narcissism will ever be missed.

You’re The Multi-Tasking Master

With the performance of a modern laptop you’re also able to make good use of the larger display. The Fold can run three apps at the same time. So, work on your emails with Netflix in the corner and Facebook open also. Further, with Samsung DeX you’ll be able to connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse to this device and use it like you would an actual computer.

For a device that fits into your pocket you would think it is the ultimate companion. If you’re someone who commutes via public transport or chauffeur you’ll love having a larger display for reading, gaming, consuming content or typing on a larger screen. For everything you once owned a tablet for, you’ll do it on this device. As it is also a phone, you won’t be juggling devices when a call comes in or adjusting headphone connections. When you arrive to the office, it could be docked and you’re able to continue working from where you left off during the commute.

Future Smartphone Or Unnecessary Gimmick

As it is a first of its kind, we’ll be waiting to see if other brands follow suit and also if people gravitate towards the Fold. In the US it will be priced just under $2,000 making it likely to cost Australians nearly $3,000 when it arrives mid-year.

Bear in mind that for that cost, one could easily purchase a separate tablet and Galaxy S10 smartphone with some change left over. It will highly depend on someone placing convenience over cost. It could go down as another product we never see again, or it catches on in the same way their Note smartphones have, which no one else has direct competition for.

All we can say for now until we get one in our hands is that it’s nice to see innovation coming back to smartphones.

Secrets To Buying A Suit When Your Weight Always Changes
Secrets To Buying A Suit When Your Weight Always Changes

The most important aspect of buying a suit is making sure that it fits. But what’s a guy to do when his weight doesn’t stay the same?

Unless you’re a new-and-improved Australian David Gandy or the office ‘crossfit athlete’, chances are your bodyweight has plans of its own through the year. It happens to the best of us, gents, whether it’s a bit of a belly after Christmas or a new diet that you start (and abandon) every six months. No one’s perfect, remember?

While we’re not dieticians or personal trainers, we know that the last thing you need is a wardrobe full of suits that don’t fit. But if your weight yo-yo’s, don’t stress – we’ve been there before.

The following guide will save you a chunk of change, and the embarrassment of your partner asking if you really, really think your favourite suit from your graduate placement still fits (hot tip: it probably doesn’t).

Enlist The Services Of Good Tailor

There’s a friend in every decent tailor

And we don’t mean one of those generic mall alteration shops to whom a hem adjustment is the extent of their skills. Tailors (the good ones) can do almost anything.

They can loosen tight pants, tuck in a billowing jacket, and perform other magical alterations that conceal blowouts or help you look trim after a period of weight loss.

It doesn’t cost much, and everyone notices the benefits. My tailor has seen me through a succession of big weekends, sporting injuries, and trendy diets. If you strike gold, cling on for dear life. Your fatter self will thank you.

Here are Sydney’s best tailors and Melbourne’s best tailors to get you started.

Expensive Suits Aren’t Necessarily The Best Suits

You can’t hide weight fluctuations with luxury fabrics

We love premium suiting and think most of our should readers too. But if your weight is scattered like a Sunday morning come-down, you should avoid luxury fabrics and settle for something a little more modest.

It’s no secret that luxury cloths – some superfine merino wools, mohair, silk-linen blends – drape beautifully and are soft and breathable. They feel like pyjamas (the good kind) and make you look like a million bucks. But they aren’t built to withstand a flogging. And we hate to say it gents, but you can’t hide weight fluctuations with luxury fabrics. They will rip, split, or tear before they stretch.

Instead, think about more affordable wool-cotton or even (gasp) wool-elastane suits that have a bit more stretch, and can accommodate a few extra grams of weight either way.  If your bodyweight has plans of its own, Brioni or Zegna shouldn’t be on your mind (but a gym membership? Why not).

Measure Your Body Mass Changes

Know your body in order to get the right suit

We’re serious about this one. Knowing the ups and downs of your body gives you a bit of predictive power. You might be one of the lucky few. You know you stack it on in winter or during silly season (despite your meagre efforts to walk to work). Or you might get lean for footy preseason and then spectacularly blow out after finals, I you get that far. Either way, you know when the weight comes on, and when it (hopefully) comes off.

If you’re lucky enough to identify a pattern and read your body, use it to your advantage. Plan your purchases around the changes. It’s not quite clairvoyance, but it’ll help you make informed choices about when to buy a suit, and when to spend or save your money elsewhere.

Don’t Be Overly Optimistic When Purchasing Your Suit

Don’t go super slim or overly big – both will do you no favours

At the end of the day, clothing purchases should be realistic choices. By that, we mean that you shouldn’t buy a suit that’s a bit snug, expecting it to fit down the track when you stop being a fat fuck.

Too often we see guys buy a suit – for an upcoming wedding, the races, an interview – that is tighter than a ballet costume, with a vague promise to go back to the gym or get their nutrition in order. It rarely happens.

We mentioned the lucky few that know how their body adds and sheds the unwanted kilos. But most of us aren’t quite there yet. If it doesn’t fit now, chances are, it never will. Buy what fits at the time and remember what we said about finding a good tailor.

Suit For Changing Weight FAQ

What fabric is elastane?

Also known as Lycra, elastane is an elastic fiber commonly used in intimates, sportswear and swimwear. The combination of natural and synthetic fibers in elastane provides stretch and recovery to the clothing item.

Can you lengthen/shorten suit jacket sleeves?

Yes. Tailors often leave extra fabric in suit jacket sleeves in case of alterations. Unless you have quite a drastic size drop, lengthening the sleeves should not be difficult. Shortening sleeve jackets is also workable too, as long as they do not interfere with button placement.

How much for suit alterations?

Alterations and tailoring services vary depending on the tailor and the quality of their services. For jackets, the price range from $60 to $160 for a simple sleeve or shoulder alteration. For pants, adjusting the hem or wait/seat will cost around $10 to $25.

This 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition Is Now On Sale…For How Much?!
This 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition Is Now On Sale…For How Much?!

First thing’s first. The photos are absolutely shocking. We had a staff member comment that even if they had over a million to drop, they’d skip the sale simply because the photos insulted his integrity. And the fact that you can also see the owner’s bare feet in the blurry photo of the shift knob.

But we digress. What you see before you is an immaculate and low kilometre 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition as seen in Wolf of Wall Street (minus the red interior) and officially delivered to Australia in right-hand-drive.

According to the seller, a ‘Paul’ from Sydney’s affluent Vaucluse, the car was first registered in 1991 and is in full running condition with a lowly mileage count of just 18,000km.

The colour combination is a white on tan interior and it comes complete with period-correct pop-up headlights that work. The 339kW 5.2 litre V12 engine also looks to be immaculate from the images. Fans will also notice that this particular model is a special one. It was face lifted by a young Horacio Pagani (yes, that Pagani) to celebrate Lamborghini’s 25th anniversary.

Given the other cars surrounding it in covers in the tight garage, it’s safe to assume this is a legitimate offering from a well-heeled private seller. Still, given the lax nature of the photography we’d probably still put this one through a proper inspection before dropping seven figures.

And once you do, we call shotgun.

What Happens To Your Muscles & Body When You Stop Lifting Weights
What Happens To Your Muscles & Body When You Stop Lifting Weights

So you’re at the peak of your bodybuilding game. Chest day. Leg day. Arms. Back. High intensity. It’s all looking pretty damn good in the aesthetics department…but then tragedy. You’re struck with an injury or illness that’s about to take you out of the game for the next three months. Oh, will someone think of the gains.

Today we’re talking about what happens to your muscles and your body when you take an unexpected break from training. Whilst the general perception is that you’ll lose your hard-earned muscle mass and simply get fat, there’s actually more to the story than that.

To help us answer some of the gym’s most burning questions, we went straight to the source at Precision Athletica – the team who are responsible for honing some of the Australia’s best professional and Olympic athletes.

If you’re afraid of losing your muscles after taking a break then listen up.

Does Muscle Turn Into Fat When You Stop Working Out?

Nils Hestermann who is the head of strength and conditioning at Precision Athletica says that the first thing is to know exactly how long the break is. Anything over 3-4 weeks break from your usual workout routine is considered long, but he also notes that a two week break could be beneficial for increasing your muscle mass afterwards.

“Let’s assume it’s a 3-4 week plus break due to injury or other reasons. Obviously a decrease in muscle mass and muscle size is happening which in many cases people think you lose muscle and it turns into fat, but it’s actually not the case,” he says.

“What happens is you lose muscle mass which results in losing muscle size. This decreases your metabolism which then increases body fat if you keep the same eating habits as when you were training.”

Hestermann explains that the key here is to adjust your nutrition intake if you are training less or not training at all. This will essentially allow you to delay the muscle loss process in the short term. Over the long term, losing muscle mass as well as the neural aspect of activating these muscles may be gone.

What If You Eat Super Clean On Your Break?

“When you still keep healthy eating habits, you can delay that process,” says Hestermann.

“Muscles don’t disappear straight away and it depends on the training you do. Experienced or semi-experienced trainers and bodybuilders will be able to keep muscle mass quite well over these 3-4 weeks and longer.”

There is a silver lining when it comes to eating clean on your break though. Assuming that your nutritional intake is high in order to support your training, eating vast amounts of healthy food whilst you’re on break still won’t help you retain the gains. At this break stage your body’s muscles don’t require as much energy as they’re not being used.

“This means that even if you have healthy eating habits but you eat too much, it won’t have a beneficial effect in terms of body composition,” explains Hestermann.

Will Your Strength Also Disappear?

It maybe common sense that a loss of muscle means a loss of strength, but Hestermann says that the type of training you do also plays a big part.

“If you take the body builder approach, you’ll see a decrease in strength quite quickly,” he says.

And then there’s eccentric training – a technique that allows you to push your muscles past their normal point of failure.

“If you incorporate a lot of eccentric training in your workout – a back squat for example – the lowering phase when you actually go down into that squat is called an eccentric phase, you will be able to keep your strength and muscle memory up for a lot longer,” explains Hestermann.

The same advantages of strength retention also occurs in high intensity training. The strength will drop a bit if you’re a bodybuilder, but it’s definitely beneficial for those looking to retain most of their inherent strength.

So don’t neglect your high intensity or eccentric training in the gym.

Will You Need To Start From Zero Once You Come Back?

This purely depends on the training. Hestermann says that muscle memory is quite amazing in that you’ll be getting back to your proper strength numbers or old numbers quickly if you have a good routine going.

“In terms of long term breaks you wont start from the bottom, but you won’t be going back to your usual numbers straight away. Muscle memory will play a big part.”

Does Age Affect How Quickly You Lose & Regain Muscle?

When it comes to working out vs. age, testosterone is the driving force. This is because a man’s testosterone levels decrease as he gets older and this means it’s harder to increase your muscle mass or strength levels.

“If you are younger and start lifting early, it will give you a good base based on muscle memory and the neural aspects that allow you to keep your strength levels and muscle mass over a longer time,” says Hestermann.

Lifting weights in your middle age or older age doesn’t mean it’s pointless. It just means you’ll have to do it longer and harder to see results when compared to a younger bodybuilder.

Advice On Retaining Your Strength & Muscle Mass

Hestermann says that having a structured routine and overload is the best way to train in order to keep your muscles.

“Having something your muscle can adapt to is really important. If you do have to stop because of certain reasons, you can definitely create an ability to get into things quicker and easier again.”

In short, incorporate eccentric and high intensity training. Hestermann says the latter doesn’t have to be a full on session. It can be a 4-10 minute finisher. But stimulating the neuro system and getting some adaptation is the key. In the worst case scenario when you’re on a break and not training, change your diet accordingly. Reduce your caloric intake as the muscles you had in the past aren’t being used.

Lifting Weights FAQ

How much calories do you burn weight lifting?

A 30-minute weight lifting session will burn about 90 to 133 calories, depending on your weight. With strength training, however, quality over quantity matters so you have to do it right to trim down.

Does lifting weights stunt growth?

No. On the contrary, weight lifting can help you grow taller. It is directly related to increased production of testosterone, which helps your muscles grow bigger and stronger.

What should I eat to gain muscle weight?

You can easily gain muscle mass if you combine exercise with proper diet. Eat lean beef, skinless chicken, cottage cheese and eggs. Whey protein, tuna, whole grains, fruits and vegetables are also good for your body.

Calvin Harris Is Wearing The Winter Suit’s Greatest Secret Weapon
Calvin Harris Is Wearing The Winter Suit’s Greatest Secret Weapon

He may look like he’s having the worst time of his life but make no mistake Calvin Harris is a man who’s still at the top of his game (he did earn US$48 million in 2018).But it would appear that Harris had yet another ace up his sleeve – a damn good turtleneck, a.k.a. the winter suit’s greatest secret weapon. At the 2019 Brit Awards overnight Harris stepped out on the VIP red carpet in a killer Tom Ford olive/brown suit that showed off an impressive sheen under varying light. Funnily enough the sheen appeared to change with Harris’ mood as he went from red carpet to award recipient (hit the gallery to see what we mean).Harris paired the fitted Tom Ford fat lapel suit with a simple black turtleneck. Whilst lacking in any real accessories, Harris did polish off the look with a shiny pair of loafers. Simple, effective and ridiculously stylish with a slight throwback to the 70s is the only way to describe this one man band. Now for those who aren’t too keen on the broody colours that Harris has employed here, you’ll be pleased to know that the combo can be applied to other patterns and hues.Even funny guy Kevin Hart jumped on the turtleneck bandwagon recently, so maybe it’s time you took on the deep freeze in style.

Okay, there’ much more, but you have to look closer. The most striking detail of the watch is the absence of any dial features. H. Moser & Cie. wanted their iridescent Blue Lagoon dial to be the hero of the piece so they omitted all the indices you’d normally find on a watch.

It’s a stark looking piece but one that draws you in with its emotive fumé dial. Flip the watch around though and you’ll be greeted with something a little more complicated through the sapphire caseback – the Manufacture Calibre HMC 200.

The watch comes in a variation of an elegant solid white or red gold case with a crown wearing the Moser ‘M’. All subtle yet distinct details that any minimalist watch lover should warm to.

Only 50 pieces of the Blue Lagoon will be made.
