Unique Dubai Experiences Most Travellers Never Try

Whether you want to put your Business trip downtime to better use or you are a traveller stopping in Dubai to break up a red-eye flight, there are many tourist traps that can take your precious hunk of time and suck it drier than the Al Qudra desert. From over-rated shopping centres to yawn-worthy aquariums, some of Dubai’s most famous attractions are full of camera-wielding tourists more than culture. As Dubai is one of the world’s pre-eminent metropolises, you feel a certain pressure to experience these civic monuments. But it can be hard to decipher which urban experiences are worth your time, and which you should trade for a more offbeat encounter. To prevent another wayward mega-mall excursion, we consulted Daniel Tolson, a renowned business coach who has spent a significant chunk of time in The City Of Gold.Daniel is a firm believer in the notion that Business trips, while they aren’t a holiday per se, “Shouldn’t stop you from seeing the world.”According to him, “If you are headed to Dubai there are fabulous opportunities to immerse yourself in a new culture and expand your mind.” Which can be a bonus for your productivity as well as your travel ‘gram.

“Taking time to look around at the place you are visiting not only helps you situate where your business is taking place but also helps you to relax and destress!”

“Yet, when faced with an entirely new landscape, city life and culture, it can be difficult to know where to start,” he continues. If that sounds like you: check out Mr Tolson’s top 5 things to do if you’ve got 48 hours in Dubai.

Visit Dubai Creek

One of Daniel’s “most favourite places on the planet,” Dubai Creek is no slow running stream. And, as Daniel explains, while the city—with its new fangled designs and enormous towers reaching through the clouds—is magnificent; it is only one part of Dubai. If you want to experience a bit of history, Daniel says you should really visit where it all began: The Creek, where, “You can still see wooden trading ships puttering in, offloading their goods from the other Gulf regions, and puttering back out into the open waters.”

“These boats travel thousands of kilometres, and are built by hand! Visiting Dubai Creek gives you a taste for what Dubai was like 50 years ago and allows you to fully experience the diversity of the area.”

Dine With Clients

Nothing brings people together like trying new food. And, for Daniel, it is unlike anything else in the world. Here are his picks for the three best value (and best tasting) local food in Dubai.

  • The Spice Souk: get your nose into the herbs and spices, watch how the local trade, go the Bazzar and negotiate a deal!
  • Bur Dubai: a fusion of middle eastern and subcontinents residents, and the air is buzzing with the scent of curry and spice. Bur Dubai is a mixture of residential, businesses and hotels, it is fast moving and very few westerners in this area. Get into Bur Dubai to truly experience subcontinent foods and hospitality.
  • Din Tai Fung: my friends own Din Tai Fung, a Taiwanese restaurant, which is one of the top ten best restaurants in the world according to the New York Times. They have recently opened up in Dubai Mall, and it is the perfect high-class spot to take a client.

Daniel believes the best places in Dubai are ones that you will never find in a tourist guide: “When you drive 15 minutes outside of the city centre you end up in the middle of the desert!”

“With half an hour drive, you’ll experience sand and dunes as far as the eye can see.”

With sand dunes the size of mountains, and a relaxing, inspiring drive to get there, you owe it to yourself (and your next business meeting to take a few hours to ‘go bush’.

Swimming

According to Daniel, “Dubai has incredibly clean beaches with white sand, sparkling blue water and palm trees.”

“My favourite beach is La Mer, which also has an energetic beachfront culture, whether or not the sun is up!”

Shopping

While Daniel admits he loves a cheeky impulse buy in the mall, which has some of the best centres in the world, he also loves to shop in the Bazaars.

“These small local shops provide cheap, handcrafted, and generally high-quality goods. I purchased dozens of hand made shirts from them over the years, and the tailors are world class.”

Women Reveal What Annoys Them Most About Their Husbands
Women Reveal What Annoys Them Most About Their Husbands

After a wife’s hilarious revenge on her lazy husband recently went viral it prompted some soul searching among the married couples of the world. While adding impossible items like “unsour cream” and “seedless strawberries” to your husband’s shopping list (then turning your ringer off) may seem trivial, it actually highlights a chronic problem in the male/female dynamic.Men’s domestic reticence.Commenting on the aforementioned mommy blogger’s post one amused follower wrote: “The thing is, my husband calls me no matter what I send him for, every time. Part of what makes this funny!”Of course: this is a vast generalisation. Times have changed and so have men. But for the laggards, or those men that worry they still aren’t doing their fair share of domestic drudgery, we thought we’d investigate the most common complaints women have about their husbands.Drawing from a thread on Reddit’s 1.1million strong AskMen community, in which a woman details her immense frustration with her husband, as well as Harper Bazaar’s widely-shared article, “Women Aren’t Nags—We’re Just Fed Up,” these are the most common ways husbands irritate wives.

Impulsive Purchases

Although this habit is often associated with wives more than their husbands, as one unfortunate woman explains in the Reddit thread: “How do I get my husband to stop some annoying habits without nagging him like I am his mother?”, men can be guilty of it too.Opening up about her husband’s irritating quirks, she said, “He goes to a home improvement store or hardware store for one thing and spends hours there when I am waiting for him to come home with the thing we need to finish a project. Then he comes home with hundreds of dollars worth of stuff.”

General Slovenliness

“He sits on the couch watching TV,” she adds, “And falls asleep every time after I ask him to come to bed.”

“Sometimes I joke about it, but sometimes it annoys me.”

“He also takes a long time in the bathroom,” she added. “He isn’t doing anything, he just takes forever.” Sound like you? Consider yourself warned…

Not Taking Charge Of Emotional Labour

Harper’s Bazaar journalist Gemma Hartley tells the following story, revealing one of women’s biggest frustration with men: their cavalier attitude towards household tasks. “For Mother’s Day,” she wrote, “I asked for one thing: a house cleaning service.”

“The gift… was not so much in the cleaning itself but the fact that for once I would not be in charge of the household office work.”

“I would not have to make the calls, get multiple quotes, research and vet each service, arrange payment and schedule the appointment,” she continued. “The real gift I wanted was to be relieved of the emotional labor of a single task that had been nagging at the back of my mind.”

“The clean house would simply be a bonus.”

Not Anticipating Enough

The problem? As Gemma recalls, her husband, “Waited for me to change my mind to… something he could one-click order on Amazon.”

“Disappointed by my unwavering desire, the day before Mother’s Day he called a single service, decided they were too expensive, and vowed to clean the bathrooms himself.”

“He still gave me the choice, of course. He told me the high dollar amount of completing the cleaning services I requested (since I control the budget) and asked incredulously if I still wanted him to book it.”

Not Reading Between The Lines

However, what Gemma really wanted him to do was, “Ask friends on Facebook for a recommendation, call four or five more services (and) do the emotional labor I would have done if the job had fallen to me.”

“I knew exactly how exhausting it was going to be. That’s why I asked my husband to do it as a gift.”

The result? Gemma was gifted a necklace for Mother’s Day while her husband stole away to deep clean the bathrooms, leaving her to care for their children, “As the rest of the house fell into total disarray.”

Snoring

Our friend on the aforementioned Reddit thread had a similar problem with a similarly well-intentioned husband, who went to the effort of buying a c-pap (a device that helps prevent snoring)—but never uses it.

“We spent a ton of money on it and he snores like crazy.”

The conclusion? Whether or not you split domestic duties 50-50 or 90-10 (both of which may be fine, depending on your respective ambitions and employment situations), whichever partner is out gallivanting around the office and listening to podcasts on their ‘dreadful’ commute home needs to recognise how much emotional labour goes into being the manager of the household.Which means if you have decided to split your domestic duties equally, don’t wait around to be told what to do. Or in Gemma’s words: “I don’t want to micromanage housework. I want a partner with equal initiative.”

Daniel Craig Rocked The Footwear That James Bond Would Never Ever Touch
Daniel Craig Rocked The Footwear That James Bond Would Never Ever Touch

He’s played James Bond for the better part of fifteen years and one would assume that Daniel Craig would be on the ball when it comes to matching a suit with impeccable footwear fit for a British spy. No so, according to his latest appearance at the official Bond 25 launch in GoldenEye, the home of Ian Flemming’s Jamaican villa.

The 51-year-old actor rocked up to the full cast event in a pared down navy suit that’s a bit more…relaxed and less tailored than Bond’s usual Tom Ford fair. What grabbed our attention most though was Craig’s sneaker-suit pairing with a pair of casual white canvas kicks – the same kind you’d find on skater kids and emo bands of the early noughties. Okay, they’re not that bad. Still, with the reputation as the world’s most dapper spy you’d assume Craig would polish things up a bit.

Even Bond 25‘s director Cary Joji Fukunaga put in more effort in a relaxed suit with a pair of tanned loafers, contrasting button navy suit and pocket square combo. Side-by-side, it’s clear that the little things really do make the difference in suiting. On the flip side, at least Craig went for a crispy clean pair of Chucks.

Thankfully Craig’s mediocre summer suit was saved by the female cast who are set to join him in his final Bond outing. Naomie Harris, Léa Seydoux and Ana de Armas flanked the Bond star who gave a slight glimpse of an Omega timepiece. The only question that remains is: where did Daniel Craig get his penchant for scruffy Converse sneakers?

Ask and you shall receive. He could almost double as a drummer for Coldplay. Let’s hope Daniel Craig’s successor does a better job at off duty looks.

I Asked Whether Mental Health Awareness Campaigns Really Work & This Is What I Discovered
I Asked Whether Mental Health Awareness Campaigns Really Work & This Is What I Discovered

Looking after your mental health is crucial to your well-being. Few people appreciate this as strongly as those who work for organisations like R U Ok?, Beyond Blue and Lifeline, which work together to destigmatise ‘mental health’ discussions within Australian society (and provide essential services to those that need them).

But even as public recognition of these issues has increased, rates of suicide and depression have continued to rise, prompting the question: is ‘awareness’ really enough?

To better understand this, we interviewed Katherine Newton, CEO of R U Ok?, a suicide prevention charity, and Mary Bonich, a psychologist at The Feel Good Clinic who regularly treats patients for anxiety, depression, stress, anger and PTSD.

This is what we learned.

Awareness Isn’t Enough—But It Was Never Meant To Be

When we asked R U Ok? CEO Katherine Newton whether ‘awareness’ is really enough, she made two points. First of all (as discussed in detail below), awareness raising takes time. And secondly: awareness raising is not R U Ok?’s only aim.

While a large part of R U Ok? day is to open people’s eyes to each other’s struggles, even within R U Ok’s initial action plan there are steps that encourage people not just to inquire about their friends and family members’ mental health, but to actually help them if they require assistance.

RELATED: How To Help A Mate Who Says They Are Not Ok On ‘R U Ok?’ Day

Katherine also points to the #youcantalk campaign, a new collaboration between mental health charities, “Where they all come together to create a community safety net.” This shows, she says, why “collaboration is key for the sector” with R U Ok? being one of the early intervention points that can direct people towards other services if needed.

“Sometimes it’s just a chat—people need to vent—and there’s not always a place for professional support. But when there is that’s when we point to all of the services like Lifeline, Beyond Blue, Reach Out and Headspace.”

When we asked The Feel Good Clinic’s principal psychologist Mary Bonich what prevents some people from accessing these services, she revealed that, unfortunately, “Many people still believe that having a mental health issue or seeking assistance is a sign of weakness—and that they should be able to solve their own problems.”

“Despite there being an increase in awareness, the stigma around accessing services remains, particularly for men.”

Awareness Takes Time

Generational changes take time. And as Katherine explains, even though “suicide rates have sadly increased,” this doesn’t mean awareness-raising campaigns are not working so much as it “demonstrates there’s so much to be done.”

Mass media campaigns like R U Ok? day are part of what Katherine calls an “integrated approach” which “studies show… change attitudes, which changes intention, which changes behaviours.”

She same thing happened, she says, with HIV, smoking, wearing a seatbelt and the slip slop slap campaigns—slow processes which were eventually highly effective: “What these things do is change the attitude, which then converts to a behavioural, long term change.”

“R u ok? doesn’t mean that suicide rates are going to go down straight away, but it will engage help-seeking behaviour, help people talk and get those intentions converted to action to actually help someone.”

“It needs sustained impact and sustained effort,” she added, saying, “You can’t just have a campaign that says: ‘this is what you should do and that’s it.'”

“We all should be the eyes and the ears of those that we love. And when we have all these services working together we can do that.”

Psychologist Mary Bonich echoes this sentiment, explaining that there is only so much institutions can do: “Whilst campaigns to increase awareness have slowly been making an impact around accessing services, the conversations in society about depression need to change.”

“Often those who confide in family, friends and/or colleagues about their difficulties are told to ‘not worry’, ‘think of the positives’ or remember ‘how lucky they are’. This invalidates their feelings, and can often leave them feeling inadequate, and thus less likely to access services or speak up again.”

The solution? “It is not until all the participants in these conversations shift their views that more people will feel supported and empowered to speak up and seek help.”

Your Money Doesn’t Just Go Towards ‘Awareness’

Where does your money go when you donate to a charity like R U Ok? Allow Katherine to fill you in: “R U Ok? is a public health information campaign, so the money raised for us helps us get more free resources universally available to all of our communities.”

“Whenever we receive donations—whether that be corporate or from merchandise—all of that is re-invested into campaigns and resources for targeted communities.”

“We’ve just, for example, launched our Stronger Together campaign,” she continues, “Targeted at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.”

If A Campaign Isn’t Working They Tweak It

“What we do when we start working on a particular campaign—for either a targeted or the mass population—we work on the objectives first: who are we targeting? Who is our audience? What does success look like?”, Katherine explains.

“Then,” she says, “When we launch that campaign we watch and listen; we look at reach, engagement and sentiment. Once we have an idea of those things then we will tweak it, or we will further amplify it.”

“After a year or perhaps two years we then do a formal evaluation from an external researcher and that helps keep us on track.”

Individuals Can Make A Difference Too (In Fact They Are Crucial)

When it comes to improving the population’s mental health, Mary Bonich says, “We need to teach people how to listen, rather than simply provide their own advice or point of view (or trying to solve someone else’s problem).”

“We need to encourage people to speak more openly about their own experiences of seeking access to services.”

She also points out, “The evidence supports the effectiveness of psychological treatment for depression—therapy does help improve wellbeing.”

For anyone looking to implement these principles in their own life, we highly recommend R U Ok?’s four-step guide to starting a conversation with someone you’re worried about.

Chelsea Boots Will Add A Masculine Edge To Any Look; Here’s How To Wear Them
Chelsea Boots Will Add A Masculine Edge To Any Look; Here’s How To Wear Them

Chelsea boots have quickly become a must-have in the leisure wardrobe of any discerning gent. Whether for a wintery weekend or a casual dinner, they’re the ultimate shoe when it comes to style and versatility. And with an illustrious ancestry extending back to the British monarchy, it’s no surprise that they’re so well-loved today.

RELATED: Best Chelsea Boots To Buy

Originally invented as riding boots, the style was later popularised by the Beatles and became a mainstay of the British mod movement in the 1960s. Since then, the boot’s appeal has broadened even further with a huge variety of both fabrications and price points. Here, we explain how to wear Chelsea boots as well as how to select the perfect pair that’ll take you from a weekend getaway to a night on the town and back again.

How To Wear Chelsea Boots With Jeans

Chelsea boots and jeans are a recipe for a classic, laid back look. Easy to throw on after work for drinks or dinner, a pair of these boots in a dark brown or black will instantly elevate a pair of indigo jeans and a casual shirt. For the best effect, make sure that the jeans are slim cut (not skinny) as this will allow the top section of the boot to sit comfortably under the hem without getting squashed. Pair this with a white chambray button-down shirt from the likes of Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren and a matching belt for an easy but elegant outfit.

If your style skews a little more to the likes of Yeezy, suede Chelsea boots can add a hint of polish to distressed denim like nothing else. Pair this with a fitted plain tee-shirt in khaki and a black bomber jacket for a more sophisticated take on street style.

How To Wear Chelsea Boots With A Suit

Harking back to the fitted suits and pointy boots of the 60s, Chelsea boots aren’t just for weekend larks and after hours. Indeed, choose your pair well and this shoe may well take you from the office to the bar and then some. However, when pairing boots with a suit, there are two key pointers to follow.

Firstly, if you’re planning on pairing a suit with boots, bring them along when you’re having your trousers hemmed. Because Chelseas sit higher on your foot than a standard Derby or Brogue might, the hem needs to be shorter in order to avoid multiple breaks at the front of your pants.

Secondly, not all Chelsea boots are suit-worthy. Look for styles that have a structured upper. These will look more in keeping with suiting and also prevent you from looking like you’ve schlepped into the office in last night’s kicks. The likes of Loakes and R.M. Williams are great places to start and, if looked after, are well worth the investment.

How To Wear Chelsea Boots With Chinos

More dressed-up than jeans but less formal than a suit, chinos and Chelsea boots scream sophistication. The trick here, is understanding fit and layering with the right pieces. Above all else, steer clear of chinos that grip to your calves. This has the unfortunate effect of making you look like you’ve continuously skipped leg day. Instead, opt for a pair of slim cut chinos that fit comfortably over the boot’s upper. Styles in beige, navy and khaki are great foundations for any casual wardrobe and you’ll be able to wear them all year round.

When it comes to choosing your top half, casual shirts are a good bet. To add some personal flare, look for bold colours in checks and stripes that will add a point of interest to the outfit. Pair this with a half-zip jumper or a quilted jacket in the cooler months for an effortless look.

How To Wear Chelsea Boots With A Winter Coat

Chelsea boots are perfect for winter, adding that extra layer of warmth and keeping the wet weather out of your socks. This being the case, you’ll likely be pairing them with a winter coat at some point. As a rule, if I’m wearing a collared shirt, I’ll opt for a more structured wool coat in either a navy or camel. Suitsupply have a great selection as do retailers like Harrolds or Mr. Porter. Look for either mid-thigh, single breasted styles or pea coats if you’re vertically challenged.

Alternatively, if you’re going for a more casual look – with jeans and a tee for example – look at layering a light wash denim jacket or gilet over a chunky knit sweater. This has the appeal of being both rustic and supremely comfortable.

How To Look After & Store Chelsea Boots

Chelsea boots can come with a hefty price-tag – particularly if you’re going for an iconic label like Australia’s very own R.M. Williams. This being the case, knowing how to look after your boots is a must. Above all else, leather Chelsea boots need to stay hydrated. Like with any leather product, when it dries out, it’s more susceptible to cracking. We suggest using a hydrating cream a few times throughout the year and this keeps them supple and adds a good level of sheen. If you’ve got a suede pair, a good shoe brush will keep them looking fresh will also help budge any stubborn stains.

Finally, we can’t stress the importance of re-soling enough. If you purchase a pair with leather soles, it’s highly recommended that you head down to the local cobbler and get at Topy sole applied. This is a thin piece of rubber that goes over the ball of the shoe and will extend its lifetime significantly.

Experts Reveal The Foods To Eat If You Aren’t Ready For A Receding Hairline
Experts Reveal The Foods To Eat If You Aren’t Ready For A Receding Hairline

When you start shedding more hair than your dog it’s time to take a good hard look… not at yourself, obviously, but at your diet. Why? Because what you eat can affect the speed at which your hair grows, where your hair grows and the overall quality of your mop.Crucially for your next month’s shopping list, certain proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are especially important for strong, healthy hair. So if you’ve been obsessively grooming by day and Googling “how to rock a combover” by night, it might be time to consider what you put in your mouth (and your internet history).Fortunately, Medical News Today just compiled a report, drawing on the most up-to-date science, outlining the top five foods for hair growth. Now, to manage your expectations, remember this: while the changes you see while introducing these foods into your diet may be relatively pronounced if you currently have a vitamin deficiency (even in this case it may take a while to see positive results), if you are already getting all the minerals you need; eating these foods will do very little. However, as precious few of us have a team of nutritionists dictating our every mouthful, it’s quite possible your diet is currently more ‘gleaming dome’ than ‘picture perfect’.So whether you want to keep that receding hairline at bay as long as possible, or you simply want longer, stronger hair, here are five foods that might help you make it happen.

Eggs

A post shared by fraise フレーズ (@nao1738) on

There’s been some controversy over whether biotin really boosts hair growth. Whatever the case, this supposedly ‘magical’ mineral is found in both expensive dietary supplements for hair growth and eggs.Seeing as the jury is still out—we’d vote for the cheap, tasty option. Especially as it (eggs) also contain other compounds that can boost hair growth, including L-lysine and vitamin D.

Brazil Nuts

A post shared by Jimmy K (@virtualjimcoach) on

As reported by Medical News Today, “Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, a mineral that may help boost hair growth.”Scientists believe this is because newly forming hair takes up selenium after receiving trace elements from the blood. However, don’t go overboard with your Brazil nut munching; too much selenium can cause brittle hair and hair loss, along with nausea, skin rashes, and nervous system problems.Ouch.So take note of the recommended upper limit for selenium, which—in adults—is 400 micrograms (about four Brazil nuts) per day.

Fatty Fish

Sure: healthy fats are an integral part of every (healthy) diet, and omega-3 fatty acids are good for the heart, skin, and eyes as well as the hair. But having a healthy heart won’t help your Tinder profile pic.If growing your hair is your reason for consuming endless salmon, you’ll be pleased to know this kind of fish is a good source of omega-3 and vitamin D, which both animal and human studies have shown may boost hair health. The richest fish sources of omega-3 fatty acids, according to Medical News Today, are:

  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Tuna
  • Herring
  • Sardines

Foods Fortified With Vitamin D

A post shared by VIOLA HOU (@thesunshineeatery) on

As reported by Medical News Today, “Some research suggests that vitamin D may help improve hair growth.”Also.

“Vitamin D is also important for muscle, nerve, and immune system functions.”

While they have their sugary drawbacks, many processed (and tasty) snacks are Vitamin D fortified, including:

  • Breakfast cereals
  • Orange juice
  • Yogurt
  • Margarine
  • Soy drinks

L-Lysine Sources

A post shared by star_beef (@star_beef) on

Numerous studies (see: here and here) have suggested amino acids like L-lysine can help promote hair growth. This is not surprising, as L-lysine is present in the hair’s root, and responsible for your hair’s shape and volume. As Medical News Today points out, “An L-lysine deficiency can cause hair loss, but getting enough of this amino acid can prevent this issue and promote regular hair growth.”Fortunately, L-lysine exists as a dietary protein in some sumptuous foods including:

  • Meat
  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Nuts
  • Spirulina
