Tokyo's Amazon Fashion Week Proves Japanese Street Style Is Way Ahead Of The Game

The hoards of businessmen in black have been replaced with a sea of colour, raincoats and some of the most eclectic layering ever witnessed in menswear.Welcome to Tokyo Amazon Fashion Week 2018, the global mecca for the weird, wonderful and truly innovative in style. The Japanese fashion scene has long been a unique collective which revels in the notion of experimentation.Whilst some fashion capitals continue to ponder ‘why?’ with a sprezzatura stick rammed way up their behinds, Japan continues to say ‘why not?’ as it draws in fashion contemporaries like Nick Wooster. From tailoring to trench coats to umbrellas and sneakers, nothing is off limits in Tokyo. When we last spoke to Sydney fashion designer Melvin Tanaya, one half of award-winning label Song for the Mute which specialises in Japanese aesthetic, he told us that “in Japan there still seems to be an underlying concept where people are able to take almost anything, garment or accessory, and mould it into their own personal aesthetic”.“There is an authentic playfulness with silhouette, colour and proportion that is still present within personal style there that often seems almost ‘try hard’ in other major cities or cultures. It’s as though in a highly rule-based society, there are no rules that apply when it comes to clothing.”And with that, we present to you the best of Tokyo Amazon Fashion Week 2018.Feeling inspired? TAG Heuer Celebrates 55 Years Of Carrera With A New Chronograph GMT
TAG Heuer Celebrates 55 Years Of Carrera With A New Chronograph GMT

It’s been 55 years since the very first Heuer Carrera hit the scene in a bid to reinvigorate the company’s chronograph line.

The latest watch to be born from that movement is the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT, a beautifully presented traveller’s piece which sports a chronograph, GMT complications, TAG Heuer’s new Heuer 02 movement and a striking black and blue GMT dual-tone bezel which seems to be a big trend at this year’s show.

Vintage-inspired? Never heard of it. The Carrera Chronograph GMT is another nod to TAG’s avant-garde approach reflected in a skeletonised movement that almost looks futuristic thanks to contrasting layers.

On the inside the movement affords an hours, minutes, seconds, date, chronograph and GMT function via the red hand. It also boasts an impressive 75 hour power reserve.

The beefy housing is an all stainless steel affair set in at 45mm in diameter and paired with the aforementioned ceramic bezel and matching stainless steel lugs. The watch is rated at 100 metres water resistance and can be had in either a steel bracelet or rubber strap.

PornHub Sponsors A Motorcycle Race Team, Promises To Come First
PornHub Sponsors A Motorcycle Race Team, Promises To Come First

If this isn’t a stroke of marketing genius we don’t know what is. The world’s biggest porn site is now a major sponsor of team MV Agusta Racing UK and its rider Joe Francis for the 2018 British Supersport series.

The unusual choice of sponsor marks what is probably the first time a porn site has ever penetrated the motorsport scene, bringing with it an unprecedented level of opportunity for sexual innuendo.

Those pondering what pornography and racing have in common needn’t come to a head. It’s obvious that both the sport of motorcycle racing and lovemaking requires talent between the legs. Endurance? Check. A bit of noise. Check. Dangerous to those not wearing the right protective gear? Definite check. You get the idea.

Given that Francis’s efforts in the series in the past only took him to seventh place in 2016, he’ll be looking to take the competition from behind this year as he hunts for a decent season climax. And if he doesn’t come first, at least we’ll know everyone had a good laugh.

Rolex GMT-Master II In Pepsi Colours & Stainless Steel Is The Modern Traveller's Watch
Rolex GMT-Master II In Pepsi Colours & Stainless Steel Is The Modern Traveller's Watch

Accessibility is the name of the game and Rolex owned that last night when they unveiled their hero piece of Baselworld 2018, the GMT-Master II finished in stainless steel and the highly sought-after Pepsi colour bezel.

Fans of the brand would know that that the original GMT hailing from the 50s sported this very same colourway before it re-merged on a white gold model back in 2014. Whilst the colour combination was a welcome addition to the contemporary line, many were also concerned about the travel watch’s daily usability and inaccessible price tag thanks to the use of precious metals.

Today that all changes with the GMT-Master II bringing usability and iconic design back to the fold for a new generation of watch lovers.

The new watch features a 40mm Oystersteel case (that’s 904L stainless steel in normal terms along with the Cerachrom “Pepsi” two colour bezel. But that’s not all. For the first time ever since the vintage years, the GMT Master II will see the return of the five-link Jubilee bracelet – a beautiful design that will get hearts racing in the horology world.

Inside it’s all about the 3285 movement, a brand new addition to the Master II which now comes with GMT function and a sturdy power reserve of 70 hours instead of the previous model’s 48 hours. Besides that the movement affords the usual fair of hours, minutes, seconds and date functions, the latter of which can be viewed in a magnified window for better legibility.

Rolex has also gone through the trouble of getting the watch COSC Chronometer certified meaning accuracy is pretty much guaranteed.

If Pepsi isn’t your colour of choice, there’s also two other 70s-inspired colourways to choose from in an Oystersteel and Everose Gold combination or full Everose Gold variant.

Local prices have also been released with the Oystersteel-Pepsi coloured GMT Master II retailing for AU$11,750, whilst the Oystersteel and Everose Gold model will ask AU$17,800 before topping out with the full Everose Gold model for AU$46,550.

Australians To Be Slugged With A New Online Shopping Tax
Australians To Be Slugged With A New Online Shopping Tax

The click frenzy could soon be over with a new government proposal set to send online shopping prices skyrocketing.

A recent Fairfax report revealed that the Department of Home Affairs have proposed a $5 tax on every parcel coming into the country from overseas under the value of $1,000. This new tax will be independent of the ten percent GST imposed on small online goods under the same amount which comes into effect on July 1 this year.

If the new tax passes the bill it could affect up to 90 percent of deliveries coming into Australia whilst putting online shoppers in dire situation.

According to the report the new tax will be designed to reinforce Australia’s biosecurity budget – a fund which has taken a serious hit since the exponential growth of online shopping across the nation.

In the last financial year it was recorded that 38.7 million packages under $1,000 entered the country via overseas. This figure reflects a 22 percent growth from the previous year and the government is expecting this rate to grow even more.

“We expect the cost of the levy per parcel to be in the dollars not the cents”

“As the volume of imported low value consignments continues to grow, so too do the costs of biosecurity, cargo and trade border activities for those consignments. This has created increasing inequity and cross-subsidisation, where importers of high value consignments are paying for the border activities attributable to other users,” a February 2018 discussion paper obtained by the SMH notes.

“Existing cost recovery arrangements are no longer sustainable and will not support Australia’s future trading environment.”

If that wasn’t bad news enough, Freight and Trade Alliance director Paul Zalai said that whilst the tax would be footed mostly by freight and express courier services, the cost would eventually be passed onto shoppers.

“We expect the cost of the levy per parcel to be in the dollars not the cents,” he added.

Some experts are already calling the new tax a bad idea with its combination alongside the GST potentially doubling the cost of online purchases. On the other side of the fence it could also do damage to the economy with nations that regularly do business by posting items to Australian shoppers.

“We should not be surprised if local small to medium exporters face reciprocal charges administered by foreign jurisdictions – a less than ideal outcome in an environment whereby our government is otherwise going to great lengths to remove trade barriers,” said Zalai.

If the $5 online shopping tax becomes a reality it will see the Australia’s biosecurity budget inflate to $200 million.

Hublot Unveils Its First Ever Smart Watch For Football Lovers
Hublot Unveils Its First Ever Smart Watch For Football Lovers

Hublot is channeling its football roots for the unveiling of its first ever smart watch – that’s right, no complications, no fancy moving parts.

The Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia (that’s the actual name) will be able to track the matches in real time, connecting the wearer to all of the drama via their wrist candy.

Think push notifications like announcing matches 15 minutes before kick-off, yellow and red cards announcements, player changes and goals. The latter of those sends a vibration to the watch whilst a ‘GOAL’ flashes on the screen whenever your team scores. There’s even comprehensive match statistics to ponder over during the game.

The watches will also be worn by the referees on the pitch, hence the name, and limited to just 2018 pieces.

Besides the Intel Atom processor which provides all of the bells and whistles of a bonafide smart watch, this particular piece is also compatible with both Android and iOS. A lithium-ion battery provides about one day of juice before requiring a charge that lasts for about 1 hour and 50 minutes from zero to full capacity.

The external is where most of the attention will be garnered though. A 49mm satin brushed titanium case wears the six signature screws of Hublot whilst topped off with a black composite bezel lug.

Different dial faces can be chosen via 35.3mm AMOLED display.

The Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia will officially land in Hublot outlets on May 1.

Until then you can watch the live unveiling of the piece below.

Qantas Has Decided To Ditch Dubai On Its Popular Australia To London Route
Qantas Has Decided To Ditch Dubai On Its Popular Australia To London Route

After five long years of battling the Dubai stopover on route to London, Qantas will finally be reverting their flight path back to a Singapore stopover.

The surprising move comes via the shifting nature of the Qantas-Emirates alliance in which CEO Alan Joyce explained that the partnership was “evolving to a point where Qantas no longer needs to fly its own aircraft through Dubai, and that means we can redirect some of our A380 flying into Singapore and meet the strong demand we’re seeing in Asia”.

The change has also been seen as a collective win for local passengers and more specifically its business travellers who prefer the Singapore stopover to the Dubai one.

Sydney-based retail buyer Leigh Baxter told High Flyer that “the flight schedule is definitely a plus for Singapore” and that she had moved her patronage to Singapore Airlines after Qantas announced their London route via Dubai.

“I can work and relax during the seven daytime hours from Sydney to Singapore, and then the 14 hour overnight leg to London is my chance to really sleep and get into the UK timezone,” she explained.

“Dubai pretty much flipped that around. The long flight to Dubai was quite a drag and the seven hour leg to London, during which the crew serve supper and breakfast, is good for only a nap rather than a proper sleep.”

It wasn’t all positive news though. Passengers like Dr. Fiona Downes who travels to London three times a year said that she preferred the Dubai stopover.

“I like having a longer leg flying back into Australia from Europe, those short overnight flights from Asia make it very hard to get a decent rest,” she said.

Downes, who often uses her frequent flyer points to upgrade from business class to first class, also thinks that the Emirates lounge in Dubai is far superior to the Qantas lounge at Singapore.

“Neither the Qantas or British Airways lounges in Singapore come anywhere close to what’s offered at Dubai in terms of food, service and ease of access to boarding.”

Others like Dr. Henry Woo who works as a North Sydney specialist says that the short flight time from Singapore to Sydney is a bit of a nuisance.

“The flight is only seven hours and at an absolute maximum, the best you could get would be a five for six hour sleep on these overnight flights,” he told Executive Style.

“For me, this amount of rest doesn’t allow for high-level functioning on the day of return so effectively a business day is lost.”

The final Dubai stopover for a Qantas flight to London will be the 24th of March.

An Astounding Number Of Australians Have Sex Without Protection
An Astounding Number Of Australians Have Sex Without Protection

Time to crawl back into your bubble, bubble boy.

A new survey from condom company Durex has revealed that 52 percent of Australians don’t use protection in bed. The independent study commissioned by the company tin 2018 drew its conclusion from a pool of 1,000 sexually-active Australians aged 16-years and above.

The question is, what the hell is going on here?

Whilst a population growth spurt is certainly not the case, it’s been revealed that almost a third of Australians (30 per cent surveyed) who don’t bring condoms on a date attribute this to not wanting to seem “too presumptuous”. A further half of Australians admitted that they skipped bringing up the use of condoms during sex in fear of “ruining the moment”.

We assume they’re also big fans of crabs and bastard children, but we digress.

Durex Sexologist, Juliet Allen, says there’s a clear case to bring communication back to the bedroom – because safety is the new sexy.

“Being open, honest and authentic before, during and after sex is essential. This includes having healthy conversations about STI’s and the use of condoms. Yes, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but there’s nothing sexier than an individual who can confidently communicate what they need and desire to feel safe and protected during sex.”

This study also revealed the concerning revelation that 1 in 5 Australian singles currently have no idea if they’re carrying an STI or not – because they’ve never been tested.

And of those who contracted an STI, 75% of them got them from someone they hadn’t expected. Are we scared yet? You should be.

Chlamydia was noted as the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease with 52% of those surveyed. If left undetected, it could cause infertility later down the track when you do want a kid of the non-bastard variety.

Thankfully Pornhub will soon have interactive videos that sync with sex toys.

Breitling's Navitimer 1 Automatic 38 Is The Perfect Watch For Men With Small Wrists
Breitling's Navitimer 1 Automatic 38 Is The Perfect Watch For Men With Small Wrists

One of the first Baselworld novelties to grab our attention this year comes from the good people at Breitling.

On their radar? Men with smaller wrists and ladies who don’t mind a touch of masculinity on their elegant timepiece. That’s the motivation behind the Swiss watchmaker’s latest Navitimer 1 Automatic 38, the first men’s and women’s piece to arrive under the watch of CEO, Georges Kern.

The timepiece features a svelte 38mm x 10mm case which isn’t exactly small in reality, but smaller when compared to the 41mm Navitimer offerings set to launch at Basel this year. It’s a nice move from Breitling considering that many men are today moving towards smaller watches with sophsticated aesthetic.

The Navitimer 1 Automatic 38 comes in two variations of steel and steel and gold which is further paired to three dial colours of silver, blue and black.

A Breitling caliber 17 automatic movement looks after the hours, minutes and seconds functions alongside a date window at the 6 o’clock mark. Power reserve for this unit comes in at a reliable 40 hours whilst water resistance is rated at 30 metres.

An alligator strap with contrast stitching polishes things off nicely.

Local pricing for the Breitling Navitimer 1 Automatic 38 in steel-black will be AU$5,620 whilst the steel-blue will retail for AU$5,620 and the steel-red gold for AU$7,590.

Interested parties can check out the new trio over at Brietling now.
