Sydney’s status as one of Asia-Pacific’s hottest watch shopping destinations has just been elevated with the arrival of a new stand-alone Tudor boutique.
The Harbour City has always been a pretty good place to shop for fine timepieces but over the last two years – despite COVID – more and more watch brands have set up shop in Sydney, with the Pitt Street Mall and surrounding streets of the CBD becoming a particular horological hot-spot.
Now Tudor has added further fuel to the fire by opening a brand-spanking-new standalone boutique right in the thick of it on King Street, in collaboration with The Hour Glass.
Located on the ground floor of Ashington Court, a stunning heritage building constructed in 1888, it’s a slick spot that’s decked out in Tudor black and red and filled with the latest pieces from the cult brand – including all the releases from Watches & Wonders 2022.
“After unveiling Australia’s first Tudor boutique in Melbourne last year, we’re thrilled to be also inaugurating Tudor’s first boutique in Sydney. Located in the heart of Sydney’s luxury shopping precinct, this new Tudor boutique on King Street offers Sydneysiders a deep dive into what is one of the most dynamic brands in contemporary watchmaking,” says Michael Tay, The Hour Glass’ Group Managing Director.

Of course, Australians have always had a love affair with Tudor. During the brand’s financial troubles in the 90s, Tudor was forced to pull out of many overseas markets, but its popularity in Australia helped keep the heritage brand afloat globally. So Americans have us to thank for all their Black Bays and Pelagoses (or is that Pelagi?)
Tudor’s new boutique comes hot on the heels of Rolex and The Hour Glass opening a massive three-storey boutique in Sydney – on the corner of Pitt and Market Streets, a block away from the new Tudor spot.

We wonder who’s going to be the next brand to join the fun. Audemars Piguet? F.P. Journe? Watch this space… In the meantime, check out Tudor’s new Sydney boutique here.

Apparently, Tom Cruise was not pleased when told a Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol stunt was going to be created digitally and he had an unintentionally funny response…
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most successful actors. The 59-year-old is renowned for his many acting accolades, starring in the iconic film Top Gun, and for performing all of his own stunts.
And the stunt that Cruise is most famous for has a rather funny story behind it. We’re, of course, talking about the Burj Khalifa stunt Cruise pulled off for the film Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which was released in 2011.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest tower in the world and in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt must scale the outside of the building to the 130th floor, retrieve nuclear codes and then repel down it. And Cruise insisted on performing the dangerous stunt himself.

But according to Joseph Kahn, the filmmaker best known for directing numerous Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Eminem music videos, the original plan for the Burj Khalifa stunt was to CGI Cruise in. Taking to Twitter, Kahn wrote:
“Heard a great Tom Cruise story. On Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol they did an animatic of the Burj Khalifa sequence, explaining how there was going to be a digital Tom to do the stunts.
Tom then angrily said “THERE IS NO DIGITAL TOM! JUST TOM!” So they shot it for real.”
Joseph Kahn

Kahn went on to say that Robert Elswit, who was the director of photography for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, told him this hilarious story about Cruise.
This alleged (and funny) response from Cruise does seem legitimate; especially when you consider that Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’s insurance company refused to insure the film if Cruise performed the Burj Khalifa stunt, so Cruise fired them and went and found an insurance company that would let him do the stunt.
In any case, whether Cruise actually said it or not, the line “There is no digital Tom! Only Tom!” is iconic.

Images that prove Australian airline Qantas has dismantled one of their A380s have emerged, signalling the end of an era…
The history of the Airbus A380 dates back to the early 1990s and ends when Airbus stopped producing A380s in 2021.
Yes, sadly, because of newer, more cost-efficient technology the iconic and massive A380 will soon be an aircraft of the past – unless Airbus is successful in its attempt to launch a zero-emission commercial A380 in 2035.
In the meantime, it looks like airlines are beginning to dismantle some of their A380s. Twitter user speedbird020 recently shared photos of a Qantas A380 (VH-OQF to be exact) that has been scrapped for spare parts.
The spare parts taken from VH-OQF will be stored in Qantas’ A380 facilities, located at LAX and Sydney Airport.
The VH-OQF became Qantas’ sixth A380 (the Australian airline currently has twelve) back in 2010 and was named after famous Australian aviator, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (who also lends his name to Sydney Airport). VH-OQF was ferried to Victorville – which is known worldwide as an aircraft ‘boneyard’ – in 2020 and has remained there ever since.
VH-OQF is the first Qantas A380 to be scrapped, but it won’t be the last. In August 2020, Qantas revealed that after grounding all twelve A380s in June 2020 because of COVID-19, only ten A380s would return to passenger service and two would be retired.

Clearly, VH-OQF was the first to be retired and according to Australian Aviation, VH-OQE will be the second A380 Qantas scraps.
The VH-OQE was Qantas’ fifth A380 when it was obtained by the airline in 2009 and was named Lawrence Hargrave, after the accomplished Australian engineer. VH-OQE has also remained at the Victorville boneyard since it was ferried there in 2020.
Currently, Qantas only has two A380s listed as ‘active’ and it’s unclear when the remaining eight (not counting VH-OQF and VH-OQE) will return to passenger service. Hopefully soon – so they avoid the sad fate VH-OQF has now met.

Want a simple, easy and effective workout you can perform literally anywhere? Look no further than this EMOM bodyweight workout.
When you think about ‘working out’, you’re almost certainly going to think you need a gym membership to get access to a variety of free weights, weight machines and cardio equipment. Gym equipment is great, but actually, your very own body weight can be enough to help you get athletically fit and strong – you just need to know which exercises to be performing.
Fortunately, we’ve found just the workout that uses just your body weight and incorporates simple exercises that literally anyone can do. No more excuses.
It comes from Serge Wod, a man who admittedly doesn’t describe himself as a fitness expert… But considering his Instagram feed is littered with various minimalistic workouts that utilise well-known exercises, we’d say he has the experience and knowledge to pass on to others.
Serge’s bodyweight workout employs the EMOM method. EMOM stands for Every Minute On the Minute, which essentially means you perform the required number of reps of an exercise, within one minute. If you complete the reps before the one-minute timer is up, you can use the remaining time as a rest period, before moving on to the next exercise.
EMOM workouts can be an incredibly effective and efficient way to workout. Barbend adds they “can help you build strength, endurance, and a lot of mental grit as you work through a ton of volume in a teensy amount of time.”
In this instance, Serge’s EMOM bodyweight workout runs for 25-minutes – but ultimately, this is just a guide. You’re free to increase or decrease the time period if you wish, although a minimum of 15-minutes is the general guideline.
Serge’s EMOM bodyweight workout comprises the following exercises:
- 10 Burpees
- 15 Air Squats
- 15 Push-ups
- 20 Jumping Lunges
- 20 Sit-ups
The five exercises above should be familiar to anyone who has even the slightest interest in fitness, but Serge provides a video demonstration of all of them to help show you the correct form.
The beauty of this workout – and other bodyweight workouts – is not only the fact you don’t need any equipment but that these exercises can be performed literally anywhere. And, the more often you perform them, the more likely they are going to become ingrained in your daily routine.
So, instead of waking up and scrolling through TikTok (like we’re often tempted to do), you could lay out a yoga mat in your front room and perform a 20 to 25-minute workout to start your day.
And, once you’ve got this bodyweight variation nailed, you can progress by adding more weight. If you enjoy the EMOM workout method, then be sure to check out this 25-minute EMOM kettlebell workout to build some serious strength.

The Australian Grand Prix is one of the best-loved races of the Formula 1 World Championship – and now its future has been secured for the next 13 years.
This morning, Formula 1 and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation confirmed that the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s iconic Albert Park Circuit will stay on the F1 calendar “until at least 2035”.
Albert Park’s contract was set to expire at the end of 2025, so to see that it’s been extended for another decade is amazing news – especially at a time when more and more races are being added to the F1 calendar, and some iconic circuits are potentially facing the chopping block.
Fans have already been quick to express their relief on social media, with one Instagram commenter joking “please tell me I’m not the only one that got scared for a moment?”
There’s also been a degree of surprise about how generous the renewal is. “Wow 2035, now that’s a very long contract, imagine how the cars could look then,” another commenter shared.

This might be good news for revheads, but not good news for New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet, who earlier this year revealed his desire to poach the race from Melbourne and bring it to Sydney after 2025. (The Australian Grand Prix was previously hosted in Adelaide from 1985 to 1995.)
RELATED: How Much It Costs To Run A Formula 1 Race
The 2022 Formula 1 World Championship will race at 22 circuits around the world, and next year it’ll race at 23 – a record number. Recent additions to the calendar have included the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last year, the Miami Grand Prix this year, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix next year.
It’s no coincidence that by 2023 there’ll be 3 races in the United States. F1 is currently enjoying an unprecedented rise in popularity in America – in no small part thanks to the success of Netflix’s Drive To Survive – and F1’s owners, Liberty Media, are keen to continue growing their US audience.
Thankfully, Australia will stay on the calendar for a while. Up the lads.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a man of many talents: actor, martial artist, fight choreographer, gymnastic star… But it seems as if designing watches is not one of them.
The 61-year-old Belgian action movie star recently unveiled an exclusive line of watches produced in collaboration with Helfer, a little-known Swiss watch brand, which are all now available for pre-order on his merch website.
Weighing in at a hefty 46mm in diameter; available in either silver and black, rose gold and black or fully black; emblazoned with his initials and retailing for US$3,330, the Helfer JCVD Limited Edition is… A lot. Too much, in fact.
Leaving aside how the watch looks – which, to our eyes, is truly hideous – they’re just terrible value. Over 3 grand for a watch that looks like the kind of thing you’d find in a flea market? Honestly, if you want a watch that’s as tough as Jean-Claude Van Damme, just buy a G-Shock. They’re somehow more subtle than these monstrosities…

At least JCVD’s watches seem to have some semi-decent specs. They’re powered by the venerable ETA 2824 movement, which is one of the most common watch movements on the planet. Actually, that’s a good thing: the 2824 is reliable and any watchmaker on the planet will be able to service one. They also have sapphire crystal glass and interchangeable rubber straps.
And while the design might be derivative, it is at least unique. Most of Helfer’s designs seem to be bizarre mash-ups of Breitlings and Panerais.
It’s a shame that JCVD has penned a deal with such an average brand when other actors of his ilk have had far more impressive horological collaborations. Sylvester Stallone, for instance, has made watches with Panerai and Richard Mille.

Streaming giant Netflix has greenlit Squid Game: The Challenge – a reality show based on the dystopic fictional show, Squid Game… A clearly poor decision.
The biggest streaming service in Australia, Netflix has had its fair share of troubles recently. First, it announced that the platform would crack down on Netflix users who share their password and then a ton of original films & shows were cancelled due to Netflix losing subscribers and share prices plummeting.
But this truly takes the cake: Netflix has announced that it’s greenlit a reality competition series called Squid Game: The Challenge. If the name hasn’t tipped you off, this new show is inspired by the hit South Korean show Squid Game.
And the announcement of Squid Game: The Challenge has left me – and the Internet – completely baffled. If anything, it proves how out of touch Netflix really is.

The most obvious message that Squid Game imparts to viewers is that capitalism has gone too far and is no longer a viable economic system in today’s society. The dystopic show achieved this message by following 456 people who were so desperate for money, they agreed to risk their lives by playing a series of games where losing meant being brutally killed but winning meant a cash reward.
And yet, that message seems to have gone completely over Netlix’s head. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Head of Global TV, said Squid Game: The Challenge will follow 456 contestants as they compete in games, inspired by the games played by the characters in Squid Game, for a cash prize of US$4.56million – minus the fatal punishments.
To turn a fictional dystopia, that’s clearly anti-capitalist, into a lighthearted reality show with a cash prize is seriously ill-considered. And yet that’s what Netflix is set on doing.
Netflix’s Vice President of unscripted and documentary series, Brandon Riegg, even said, “Squid Game took the world by storm with director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment.”

How they got Squid Game’s writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk to sign off on – or even “support” – Squid Game: The Challenge, I’ll never know.
The Internet is, of course, having a field day with Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge announcement, with many taking to Twitter to proclaim what an idiotic idea it is. One Twitter user wrote,
“I think Squid Game can go down in history as the most egregious example of capitalism completely missing the very obvious point of a narrative. Squid Game the game is not supposed to be a fun reality game and that goes against the entire message of the show.”
Another user Tweeted, “making an actual Squid Game reality game show is the exact move [you’d make] if you didn’t watch the show, didn’t understand the show, or didn’t find the masked gazillionaires totally disgusting… in short: Netflix, YIKES.”
Yikes indeed.

Daniel Ricciardo‘s future in Formula 1 seems increasingly uncertain. The 8-time race winner’s recent run of lacklustre performance has led many to speculate that the Australian might be facing an early retirement from the sport unless his form turns around. One commentator, however, has offered a rather unique piece of advice to ‘The Honey Badger’: play more computer games.
1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill, during his appearance on a recent F1 Nation podcast, has suggested that Ricciardo’s lack of sim racing experience and hours might be why his teammate Lando Norris is showing him up.
“I wonder whether there’s something about the nature of Formula 1 these days which is helping a younger generation of drivers because I think they’ve been used to playing computer games. Look at Max [Verstappen], he’s on a computer game the whole time,” Hill mused.
“It used to be that they’re all going karting, Michael Schumacher, he went and did karting when he had a chance, the exception to that is Fernando Alonso, who also goes in karts all the time to keep his edge. But there’s a younger generation who have used computers a lot more, and I don’t think Daniel was one of those, that generation.”
Damon Hill
“I think there’s something about the way the cars can be driven. Using different parts of the brain… it’s more to do with the signals they’re getting are more eye to hand, rather than through the seat of their pants, they’re able to respond to what they’re seeing,” Hill continues.
“That potentially opens up a different setup possibility for engineers, so they can go from optimum setup, which perhaps doesn’t give the feel to the old school drivers as much.”

There’s perhaps some merit to Hill’s theory. Many of the younger drivers on the grid – such as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Mercedes’ George Russell, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and indeed, McLaren’s Lando Norris – all spend a lot of their spare time on racing simulators and regularly stream their virtual racing exploits on platforms like Twitch. They often race each other, too.
With how advanced and realistic modern driving simulators are – even pretty mainstream ones like the official F1 video game – it could be that all this screen time is what’s giving these young guns an edge. They’re literally getting more laps in.
RELATED: The Miami Grand Prix Has Us Asking: When Did Formula 1 Get So Cringey?
Moreover, many commentators have suggested that ‘older’ drivers (who are facing pressure from their younger, talented teammates) like Ricciardo or Lewis Hamilton, have a mindset where they need the car to suit their needs, rather than adjust their driving style to their car.
Perhaps all that experience sim racing – where you don’t have as close of a connection with the car and therefore you’re forced to work around your vehicle, in a sense – means that younger drivers like Leclerc, Norris and Russell are better at getting used to new machinery, such as the radically different cars F1 has introduced in 2022.

Indeed, Ricciardo himself has talked a little bit about the mental block he’s had to overcome when it comes to virtual racing.
“At first I thought it was just something fun to pass the time, but I definitely see that there’s a bit more to it now,” he told Motorsport.com in an interview last year.
“Some of the sim racers, they’ve been able to transfer their skills into a real car and that’s been a bit of an eye-opener. We talked about F1 1995, and that was very different to what we have now. So probably for a while, my head was in the place of ‘ah, it’s just a game’. Now it’s like, what can I really learn from it?”
Daniel Ricciardo
“The biggest challenge that I’ll say all of us F1 drivers have is that we only get a few chances each weekend to put a new set of tyres on and do the perfect lap,” Ricciardo explains.
“There’s sometimes three weeks in between races, and then at the end of the season, there’s two or three months. It is crazy, for a sport that’s so precise, and there’s so much technology involved, and with such precision, that it’s hard for any of us to ever really be perfect because we just don’t get the mileage. That’s where I’ve definitely been more open-minded.”
RELATED: How Much It Costs To Run A Formula 1 Race

Ricciardo’s form shows some early signs of recovering. During last weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ricciardo finished 8th: his first points finish since his home race at the Australian Grand Prix and his second points finish this year overall. Crucially, he finished ahead of Norris, who finished 9th.

The 2022 Formula 1 World Championship continues with the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. Montréal has traditionally been a pretty strong track for Ricciardo – indeed, it’s where he recorded his maiden F1 win back in 2014. Fingers crossed he can make some magic happen again.
