Essential Pre-Photo Checks To Ensure You'll Always Look Your Best
Essential Pre-Photo Checks To Ensure You'll Always Look Your Best

It’s a fact of life that we can’t always take a good photo. Whether it’s the lighting, the way your hair falls or just a not-so-flattering expression, it’s never going to be perfect.

Still, we know you’re better than that so we’ve put a mental checklist together so you can avoid embarrassing Facebook tags and ensure you’re presented to the rest of the world as the magnificent bastard you are.

Here are the crucial do’s and don’ts before someone snaps your mug…

Straighten Up

You’ve gone to the trouble of spending money on a nice suit and tie, only to have it show up creased and dishevelled in your photos. Two things: good posture and a great dry cleaner. Make sure your ensemble starts off perfectly pressed (and clean) and when the flash bulbs start going off, fix up, look sharp and keep your back straight. No one likes a sloucher anyway.

Avoid Raver’s Corner (Disco Froth)

Yep. We’re referring to the excess spit and crud that can build up in the corners of your mouth. Not only is it pretty gross, it also looks creepy in photos. If it means finding a quiet corner and using your pocket square as a napkin, so be it. Just don’t let it happen.

Tuck Your Tie Under Your Collar & Tuck Your Collar Into Your Jacket

We know if you’re lazy or in a rush, your jacket and tie can become an afterthought, or even an optional accessory. But we are of the mindset, ‘if you’re going to do it. Do it right’. That means completing the whole tie tying process, tucking your collar into your jacket and finishing it off by securing the knot neatly under your collar. Leaving it even a little loose will make you look like a 70’s sleaze.

Try Not To Speak (Or Eat)

There’s no need to be mute, but when the photographer starts hassling you for a snap, it’s a signal to swallow that mouthful of food and keep the jabbering to a minimum. Yes, candid photos can often accentuate your best assets, but when you’re mocking your mates you probably aren’t looking your finest.

Avoid Awkward Neck

Keep it simple, stupid. There’s no need to look up, or down, or to the side. Just keep your head up and back straight. Angling your head downwards will give you a shiny flashbulb forehead or double chin, and arching up will just make you look like a twat.

Check Your Teeth

Teeth can make or break a photograph. Maybe you’ve been working your way through a couple of glasses of red, or you’ve taken a liking to the parsley canapes. Either way, there’s a big chance your pearly whites aren’t looking their best. Get one of your mates to check your chompers for stains or food remnants before the photos begin.

Try Not To Blink

Of course, there’s no clear cut way to avoid this, but if you feel the need to blink coming on, get it out of your system before the cameras start snapping. Another tip is to completely close your eyes until everyone says ‘cheese’, but you could risk looking a bit strange. There’s nothing worse than a great group shot, with one Blinky Bill.

Fix Your Hair

No one’s hair is looking perfect at the end of the night, particularly if you’ve been carving up the dance floor. But before pictures are taken ensure your hair is slicked down, pushed back or just away from your face. The secret to this is all in your pre-event prep. Don’t go overboard with product, but just enough so that running your hand through your hair later in the evening will push it back into place.

Pick Your Smile

Winners are grinners. If you look best with a toothy grin, think of something that makes you laugh for the most natural result. If you’re more of a smirker, remember the degree in which you smiled in a flattering photo and mimic it.

Get That Drink Out Of Your Hand

Some clever person once said to never have your photos taken with a drinking glass in hand. We agree, it’s not a good look and can often make you look more awkward than awesome. The drink just hangs around like an additional appendage. This rule includes beer, wine and champagne. One drink which is acceptable is a Pina Colada, but only if you’re on a windsurfer.

Bed Bugs Have Just Been Found On A Business Class Flight & You Should Be Afraid
Bed Bugs Have Just Been Found On A Business Class Flight & You Should Be Afraid

Here’s some scary news that should make your next trip a very uncomfortable one.

Bed bugs were recently found on the business class seats of an Air India flight from Newark Liberty International Airport in the U.S to India.

Reports from Fox5NY joined outraged business class passengers who took to Twitter to express their anger and disgust at the airline. The passengers revealed that their seats were infested with bed bugs, causing them to have “bites all over their body” once they landed.

Whilst some may argue that it’s an isolated case since they’d probably never travel to India, there’s still the concern of how the bed bugs got there in the first place and whether or not they’re in the airport (likely).

Another major question raised is how often these plane seats get cleaned.

Here are some disturbing images from passengers on board.

And the aftermath…

One passenger even raised a good point after his children were fed to the blood sucking critters.

Kashmira Tonsekar who was a passenger on the flight told The Hindustan Times that they had alerted the crew of the situation who then sprayed a repellant.

“After a while, more bugs started coming out from that and other seats.”

Air India have since come out to address the issue via a statement saying that it is “deeply concerned with a few reports of ‘bugs’ causing inconvenience to its esteemed passengers”.

“The issue has been viewed seriously and every possible step is being taken to closely inspect and further strengthen our system at every level to ensure that such isolated incidents of passenger discomfiture do not affect our consistent performance.”

Does this bode well with your faith in business class? Let us know.

The Real Reason Men Lie About The Number Of Women They've Slept With
The Real Reason Men Lie About The Number Of Women They've Slept With

You’ve been dating the requisite period of time, just starting to get comfortable together—guard finally down—when suddenly she pops the question: How many people have you been with? A bunch of thoughts immediately come to mind: is she genuinely interested? Is she trying to catch me out? Is she just making conversation? Or could my answer determine whether or not she spends the next week posting passive-agressive Instagram indirects (directly) at me.

Despite the reluctance many men feel when deciding how many of their exploits to share with a more conservative partner, they have no such qualms when talking to their mates, or indeed, scientists. A recent study published in the Journal of Sex Research has shown why men are more prone to exaggerate the number of sexual partners they’ve had than women.

Scientists from the University of Glasgow analysed the responses of over 15,000 men and women in the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3). Their study aimed to better understand why men always report more opposite-sex partners on average than women, even though the average number reported by men and women should be about the same. In the survey men reported an average of 14.14 lifetime partners while women reported only 7.12.

The first reason for this discrepancy was that there were a number of men who skewed the average, reporting unusually high numbers  (up to 110) of partners. There were significantly less women like this. As reported by Science Daily, “Excluding these men and women reduced the overall average, closing the gender gap.”The gap was made smaller still when the researchers realised men were more likely than women to estimate rather than count their lifetime partners. For example, “Among those reporting 5-9 partners, 24% of men estimated compared with 15% of women” (Science Daily). The final explanation comes down to culture. As the women surveyed were generally more conservative in their sexual attitudes than men, it follows that they were likely to round down, where as men were more likely to round up. These attitudes were tested by asking questions like: are one-night stands wrong? (9% of guys said yes, compared to 18% of women) and: are extramarital relations always wrong?According to the study’s main author, Dr Mitchell, this is an important area to investigate because, “Accurate reporting of sexual partners is crucial for many reasons, including assessing individual risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and estimating the rate of STI/HIV transmission.”

“Most existing studies of reporting bias are limited to students or high-risk populations, or are conducted as ‘laboratory’ settings, so they don’t show how members of the public respond in a ‘real-life’ survey. To our knowledge, our study is the first attempt to look at all the key types of explanation for the gender discrepancy within the same large and representative sample.”

As most existing studies on the topic have been limited to students or high-risk populations (or have been conducted in ‘laboratory’ settings without involving ‘real-life’ surveys) this one is a good sign for progress, as it marks, “The first attempt to look at all the key types of explanation for the gender discrepancy within the same large and representative sample” (Science Daily).RELATED: Dogs Understand Humans Better Than Our Partners Do, According To Science People

Justin Bieber Wore A $300,000 Diamond Watch To See His Wedding Pastor

Two words. Sagging shorts. And two more words. Patek Philippe.

You’ll rarely ever see them in the same sentence but this is the era of Insta-celebs and billionaire millennials, a time where the most questionable style choices seamlessly blend with luxe horology. Case in point, Justin Bieber spotted visiting his Hillsong wedding pastor with fiancee Hailey Baldwin in New York City.

Whilst a lot of the focus was on the power couple’s latest engagement, we couldn’t take our eyes off what the Biebs was wearing. A cartoon motif white tee, ridiculously saggy Adidas shorts, raised socks and Vans Half-cab sneakers in bright red and blue. And how can we forget the crowning jewel…a custom diamond Patek Nautilus worth an insane £174,494 or AU$309,706.

Now we’re not one to judge how the mega star spends his money but the complete look just doesn’t seem to bode well. It’s like his pad was on fire and he just decided to run out wearing whatever he could find in the vicinity.

But we digress. If you’ve got Bieber levels of money, who gives a damn what others think. Let’s just hope this isn’t a hint of his wedding attire.

Are You A Morning Person? A New Study Reveals Why Everyone Hates You
Are You A Morning Person? A New Study Reveals Why Everyone Hates You

You rock up to work—pre caffeine—and before you can even sit down the dreaded Office Optimist assaults you with a smile and friendly wave. In theory they haven’t done anything wrong; so why are they universally hated? Science now has the answer.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Guelph has shown that “highly cooperative and generous people can attract hatred and social punishment, especially in competitive environments.”

“Most of the time we like the cooperators, the good guys. We like it when the bad guys get their comeuppance, and when non-cooperators are punished,” said psychology professor Pat Barclay. “But some of the time,” he added, “Cooperators are the ones that get punished. People will hate on the really good guys.”

“This pattern has been found in every culture in which it has been looked at.”

This manifestation of “tall poppy syndrome”, comes about especially when we think the Dreaded Office Optimists are making us look bad, the report concluded.

The study, published recently in Psychological Science, found that cooperative behaviour attracted punishment most often “in groups whose members compete with each other.” According to Science Daily, “This was even the case when punishing or derogating the do-gooder lessened benefits for the entire group, including the punisher.”

This is human nature, argues Barclay—we have a deep rooted suspicion towards those who appear holier than thou—which is why we think, ‘either they’re faking it: or there’s something wrong with them.’ After all: no-one with normal brain chemistry could be that upbeat before 9am (or that often), surely?

So, “What are the psychological mechanisms that cause this?”, the scientists then investigated.

“Why are people built in such a way that they will react against that overly generous person, and want to bring down the person who appears too good?”

They started by looking backwards: “Anthropological evidence from hunter-gatherer societies suggests a similar social phenomenon prevented excellent hunters from dominating the group,” Barclay said.

“In a lot of these societies, they defend their equal status by bringing down somebody who could potentially lord things over everybody else.”

“You can imagine within an organization today the attitude, ‘Hey, you’re working too hard and making the rest of us look bad.’ In some organizations people are known for policing how hard others work, to make sure no one is raising the bar from what is expected” (Big Think).

“The same social dynamic may affect actions to protect the environment, which requires acting both individually and cooperatively for the good of all,” Barclay revealed (Journal of Psychological Science).

People who do nothing for the environment risk damaging their reputation, and may instead choose to attack the motives of environmentalists, he said.

“It is a way of bringing those people back down, and stopping them from looking better than oneself in their attempts to protect the environment or address social inequality.”

Although no amount of research can change evolutionary psychology, one potential benefit, he points out, is that by identifying and raising awareness of this competitive social strategy, maybe it will be less likely to work. In other words: next time you’re tempted to nudge a cyclist off the shoulder of the road or raise an eyebrow at your vegan mate’s food—ask yourself, “Why am I really doing this?”

The Vintage Roadsters That Defined An Era Of Beautiful Motoring
The Vintage Roadsters That Defined An Era Of Beautiful Motoring

There’s no shortage of cool cars for today’s auto aficionados, but it comes with cruel irony. As we’re faced with more and more automotive options, it seems the cars themselves get more similar every day. Who wants a generic sports car when you could have something with character? These beautiful vintage roadsters would make A+ additions to any serious driver’s car collection…. that’s proving you can find them for sale.

1953 Ferrari 250 MM

The earliest incarnation of the Ferrari 250 was born in 1953. The company’s most successful early line, the 250 series includes several variants and was produced until 1964. This beauty is the 1953 Ferrari 250 MM, a long-distance racer introduced at 1953’s Geneva Motor Show. The innovative design showcased recessed headlights and side vents that became a Ferrari staple of the 1950s.

1953 Porsche 550 Spyder

The Porsche 550 Spyder was designed for use in auto racing and introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show. Built low to the ground in order to be efficient on the track, the roadster won its first race in May 1953 and went on to become an active participant around the European and US champions circuit until 1965.

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray

America’s sports car had grown incredibly popular since its 1953 debut, but by the 60s it was time for a change. Chevrolet chief Bill Mitchell and stylist Larry Shinoda were faced with the tough task of improving a living legend, but they succeeded in creating the most collectible Corvette of them all. The Sting Ray was universally lauded in the press for its handling, road adhesion and sheer power.

1957 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster

Mercedes-Benz introduced a Roadster version of the 300SL at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show. The initial version was known for its gullwing doors, first-ever consumer fuel-injection and for reaching the world’s fastest top speed at the time. In 1957, the original 300SL got the Roadster makeover along with cosmetic changes like larger headlights, a smaller grille and a chrome accent strip down the side of the car.

1962-1980 Triumph Spitfire

The Triumph Spitire was such a success upon its 1962 launch that the basic design remained virtually unchanged until 1970. Giovani Michelotti was responsible for the car’s curvaceous body, while many of its internal workings were adapted from Triumph’s Herald saloon. The Spitfire was an instant success, particularly in North America.

1966 Jaguar E-Type

The Jaguar E-Type’s killer combination of good looks, high performance and competitive pricing made it unbeatable during the 1960s. Legend has it that when it went on display for the first time at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, Enzo Ferrari himself remarked that it was the most beautiful car he’d ever seen. 1966 saw the introduction of a 2+2 body style to the E-Type line-up.

1961 Shelby Cobra

In 1961, race car driver turned automotive entrepreneur Carroll Shelby learned that England AC cars was losing the engine supplier for its open two-seater and saw an opportunity. He convinced AC to provide him the cars, and brokered a deal with Ford to supply its new small-block V-8. The combination of classic British roadster with American engine power was irresistible and the car was an immediate sensation.

1956-1959 BMW 507

The BMW 507 was initially intended to be exported to the United States at a rate of thousands per year, but the undertaking proved to be too expensive. In the end only 252 units were made and losses were heavy for BMW. Shockingly, over 200 of the 507s are still known to exist, a testimony to the timeless design of BMW’s most valuable classic road car.

1956 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1954. The open two-seat Giulietta Spider made its debut in mid-1955, featuring convertible bodywork by Pininfarina. It was Alfa Romeo’s first post-war convertible and remained in production, more or less untouched, until the arrival of the Duetto in 1966.

1971 Volvo P1800

Modern associations with the name Volvo typically do not involve sports cars, but once upon a time a little something called the Volvo P1800 was rocking the road. Volvo’s previous attempt to produce a sports car, the P1900, had ended in disaster, but this time Volvo was destined for greatness. The P1800 celebrated its much-acclaimed 50th anniversary in France during the Viking Classic Auto Show of 2010.

UPDATE: The Volvo convertible was a custom job and not factory standard.

Eddie Redmayne Shows You How To Dress Casual In Fresh Gucci
Eddie Redmayne Shows You How To Dress Casual In Fresh Gucci

He’s played everything from Stephen Hawking to a wizard hunting beasts and now you can add luxe street style ambassador to that list.

We’re talking Eddie Redmayne and his latest personal look which easily catapulted him to the best dressed man at last week’s San Diego Comic-Con International event. The 36-year-old British actor kept things casual but it was clearly the pieces he chose that elevated him to another level – dare we say, even higher than Ryan Reynolds’ white pants crusade from the same event.

Redmayne paired a slick Gucci embroidered cotton bomber jacket over a knitted sweater and dress shirt for a very cool smart casual look with extra pop thanks to the Gucci motifs. The layered look was polished off with fitted denim featuring rolled cuffs and a pair of white Gucci Ace embroidered sneakers which matched perfectly with the seam colour. It’s all in the details men, even if it is casual.

Of course being an ambassador to a Swiss luxury watch brand, Redmayne also let his blue-dialled OMEGA Aqua Terra timepiece do the talking. Again, it’s a finer detail which matches perfectly with his jacket and laid back look.

He can act, he can model and he dresses damn well. Everyone loves Eddie. Well, almost everyone.
