Yes, this is another post about home workouts. But rather than suggest you use resistance bands, your sofa or even build your own squat rack to make gains, it’s instead revolved around an easy-to-follow Instagram post that lets you know how you can replicate your usual weights-based workout at home.Even though Fitness Australia has recently come out and said it believes Australian gyms will be able to open in the not-too-distant future (as long as certain hygiene measures are still enforced) until then, we’re stuck inside our homes for the majority of fitness-based activities. You’re still of course allowed to head outside for a walk, jog, run or cycle.Jonas Hereora has come to our rescue though, by listing 10 common gym exercises (predominantly weights-based) that we can still carry out at home, using just our bodyweight or common items found around the house.
He starts with a dumbbell press, which would be used to build the shoulders and chest muscles. Without a set of dumbbells at home, you can instead perform pike push-ups, by getting into a regular push-up position and then sticking your bum in the air, placing more effort on your shoulders.A decline bench press can be substituted for an incline push-up to work the chest and tricep muscles, and dips – which work the chest, lats and triceps – can be carried on using two chairs. Although it doesn’t show it in the image, we’d suggest you put some weight on the chair seats, otherwise, you could end up with an unexpected visit to A&E.Jonas adds that for the pull-ups, if you don’t have access to a pull-up bar, you can substitute it for a resistance band held in place at the top of a door, allowing you to perform lat pulldowns instead. Similarly, you can use them for bicep curls, instead of Jonas’ suggestion of lifting your own leg (especially since it will be easy if you regularly skip leg day). Here’s to easy home workouts!

Unless you’ve been living in an end-of-days bunker, you’ll know Virgin Australia’s purple disco was cut short last week. Cue: much sadness from those that loved its pointy end offering (often touted as the best domestic business class in the world) and much rumour-mongering.7News.com.au reported various Chinese Airlines are interested in taking Virgin Australia over, others say Singapore Airlines is more logical. Points hacking expert Immanuel Debeer told DMARGE last week he’d heard the most credible candidates to buy Virgin Australia are Bain Capital and BGH Capital. That’s before we even mention Wesfarmers and the Macquarie Group (both slated to be interested).No-one yet knows who’ll buy. But regardless of who does, Virgin Australia will likely be restructured, streamlined and be put back in action with a more cut-throat domestic focus (whether or not it retains the Virgin Australia name). While this is heartbreaking for those that love the current Virgin Australia business model, and a stressful time for the carrier’s employees, experts argue two intriguing silver linings come with it.As Professor Rico Merkert, Professor and Chair in Transport and Supply Chain Management at the University of Sydney (and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Air Transport Management) told DMARGE, “The boardroom of Virgin Australia has been too cumbersome for quite some time with not only too many other large airlines controlling Virgin but them often arguably not having profitability of VAH as their main priority.”“They now need to negotiate with the administrators as well as senior bondholders and others a package that is of mutual interest,” Professor Merkert said. Though he sees “potential for conflicts” Professor Merkert also told us going into administration will “potentially” hold up a smokescreen for Virgin Australia to make decisions that would have been deemed cruel or counter (Virgin’s) culture six months ago, but will benefit them in the long run (a take that is backed up by other experts in this field).“As they had accumulated $1.6bn worth of negative equity and a too complex business model with an even more complex board room, they were in dire need for change. COVID-19 may speed up that process and may in fact force one or two of the shareholders out, which may in fact not be a bad thing if the remaining shareholder has a clear strategy toward commercial viability.”
“Having the fleet currently grounded due to COVID-19 is actually good and potentially a perfect time for a take over as there would be no disruption to the operations and as it will take at least another 2-3 months before the skies are open again, there would also be some time for re-branding campaigns etc.”
It’s not just Professor Merkert who takes this view. As The Australian reported last week (see: “Leaner, meaner, if Virgin Australia stays aloft”), Virgin Australia now has two advantages it hasn’t had before: “first, it will no longer have on its register four or five competing airlines with shareholdings large enough to command board seats; second and importantly, it will no longer be publicly listed.”
“The albatross of quarterly reporting to the market will be gone and, behind the private curtain, quite possibly with a tough private equity holder, long-term decisions will be made, often requiring short-term pain not possible in the public sphere” (The Australian).
Likewise, and as The Sydney Morning Herald pointed out last week, “Sure businesses that go through the ignominy of administration suffer brand damage but if they come out the other side they get their phoenix moment – and with a pretty clean sheet of paper from which to build a better business.”
“Administration triggers the opportunity to renegotiate everything from the current enterprise bargaining agreements to fuel hedging contracts, lease rentals from the airport owners and catering.”
“It is not only the Virgin 2.0 balance sheet that will look much healthier having cut a swathe through the $5 billion debt pile, the resurrected airline will be able to establish a new cost base – one that will be significantly lower than that of Qantas,” The Sydney Morning Herald added. On the topic of Qantas, Professor Merkert told DMARGE “the worst-case scenario for Qantas [to come out of VA’s collapse] would be if… Singapore Airlines would be allowed to take over the VAH assets cheaply and without the debt (perhaps together with a strong capital partner and a financial injection but no other airline partner).”
“This would put a re-emerged and simplified Virgin in a fairly strong position.”
If that happened, “Qantas would still dominate the domestic market and would benefit from regional networks once we get to the other side of [the crisis], but Virgin/Singapore Airlines would become a formidable competitor on the core domestic routes (operated by VAH) and also international (operated by SIA).”
View this post on Instagram
“Tigerair would remain shut and potentially sold to another party as would Velocity or incorporated into Krisflyer. Whether that happens (and Singapore Airline has long been trying to get into such a position) remains to be seen though, as there are those other airlines (i.e. Etihad and HNA) still in the mix and it seems state governments are now also keen on getting some of the jobs associated with a second airline attracted to their jurisdictions, which will complicate matters for clear strategy that is focused on the most attractive and commercially viable business model and product only.”
“This is good news for Qantas.”
A media release sent to DMARGE from the University of South Australia backs up Professor Merkert’s analysis, with UniSA aviation industry expert Associate Professor Kate Quigley suggesting “the COVID-19 crisis [will] force operators to develop new, more resilient business models.”“The aviation industry has always been challenging, as there are large costs involved in keeping a fleet of planes in the air, and that often requires a very high level of debt,” Assoc Prof Quigley says.“So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some other airlines around the world go the same way as Virgin Australia, because the only way those companies can make debt repayments is to have their planes flying, and that is impossible at the moment,” Prof Quigley adds.
“However, where one operator drops out, there becomes more space for other operators to work in, and for those companies with clever, innovative ideas, there is a really exciting opportunity to reshape the aviation industry for the better going forward.”
Although Sir Richard Branson has criticised the Australian government for not bailing Virgin Australia out, Prof Quigley (appears to) suggest the government’s inaction is a blessing in disguise.“A bailout might have saved jobs in the short term, but Virgin Australia was already struggling before this pandemic, so if the Government were to prop up a problematic business model, many other struggling businesses might then expect the same type of support, rather than addressing their operational issues,” Assoc Prof Quigley says.
“Instead, there is now a space in the Australian airline industry for an innovative new operator to establish a viable business model that responds to the current situation.”
What will that look like? “Whether that is a reborn version of Virgin, or a move into the market by one of the many international operators who already had a stake in Virgin, or a new operator entirely, they will be able to structure that business differently than the old Virgin model, adapting to the new marketplace, and ensuring competition remains in the Australian industry.”This is crucial because, as Prof Quigley points out, “even before this pandemic, many people felt domestic prices were too high, so they would fly to Bali or Fiji instead of Cairns, and we don’t want to see that worsen.”
“Without a second airline to compete against Qantas, the risk is obviously that they might start to price gouge, and then the public carries the burden.”
Assoc Prof Quigley believes that with a ‘leaner and meaner’ version of Virgin Australia in place, such a price hike is unlikely. In fact, according to her, there will be new opportunities for Virgin Aus 2.0 (or whoever replaces them) sooner than you’d think: “Significantly for whoever fills the Virgin void, Australia may well come out of lockdown before international travel resumes, so more Australians could be exploring Australia than ever before.”
“The domestic market might see a post-pandemic boom.”
More as the story develops.

How’s hottest to present yourself these days? Sexy but serious? Corporate but fun? The way many curate their LinkedIn profiles, it’s almost as if – beyond having a drop-dead CV, oodles of experience and academic accolades that put a Harvard professor to shame – to get a decent job today you also have to be a part-time model.Bitter as that last comment was, when you look at this generation of ‘thought leaders’ and ‘entrepreneurs’ a trend soon bubbles; anyone who’s anyone is multi-skilled.Whether you’re a full-time marine biologist and part-time influencer, a CEO cum motivational speaker or a life coach who is casually an Olympic athlete in your spare time we’re all on LinkedIn for the same reason; networking and self-promotion.But that, apparently, doesn’t stop some people from trying to use it for a whole ‘nother purpose. Whether it’s because they jumped on LinkedIn with their fingers but their brain was still on Tinder, or because there is a creepy-crawly algorithm in place, many individuals (both men and women) have reported a rather sinister rabbit hole of beautiful faces (rather than relevant jobs, or industry connections) lining their LinkedIn walls. On the other side of the coin, others receive social advances which really should have been instigated over Instagram (or not at all). As the account of one LinkedIn user (below) puts it: “This is not Tinder. I am looking for modelling work. Please don’t message just saying ‘hi’ as it floods my inbox and important things get lost.”To get to the bottom of this, DMARGE spoke to international tech commentator Geoff Quattromani and Relationship Expert and Advisor to Channel 10’s The Bachelor Samantha Jayne. What’s up with the tech? What psychology is at play? What… the hell?
We got in touch with Geoff first to break down the algorithm. This is what he told us: “LinkedIn appears to have built algorithms that not only leverage demographic, experience and common interests for new connections… but also profile pictures.”“What appears to be happening is each profile picture is being analysed and metadata is placed around it. For example, ‘male, athletic, 21’. They are then using that data as part of their recommendation engine to suggest like-minded AND ‘look-like’ connections.”“If you were a modelling agency you can see the benefit of this, for example. I’m a little surprised LinkedIn is doing this though, especially when the world is encouraging diversity in organisations and here is an example where their algorithms influence you to remain connected to people you already connect with. That won’t shift the needle in bringing more women into tech, for example.”We then turned to relationship expert Samantha Jayne to ask: could it be our (collective, obviously) fault? The answer was yes… and no. While Samantha agreed with Geoff that it’s “likely all in the algorithm… like re-targeting shopping” (in that it “wants to give you what you want” to keep you engaged) she also said there was a human aspect to this technical phenomenon.
“Looks have always been a part of natural selection and… always will.”
“The more [physically] attractive woman has a symmetrical face. [As for a] man; it’s more about his… jawline,” Samantha added. For anyone now wanting to make the most of their assets, Samantha then gave us some tips on looking simultaneously sexy and professional.“A professional photo is always best for LinkedIn, show your best face angle, smile, dress as though you are going to work not the beach. Conservative is best or something plain.”
“Good posture is everything: shoulders back with confidence is super sexy.”
Got it? Your network awaits.

This is the big one. We’ve longed for a car such as this to pop up on Carsales for some time and low and behold, here it is. The original BMW E30 M3 – this one from 1987 – is possibly the most iconic BMW of all time and one that real enthusiasts long to have in their collection, and this one is available now for AU$85,000.We expect some real motorheads to read this piece, so we’ve made sure to do our research so we can do it a good service. The M3 started life in March 1986 and retained its original E30 body styling until 1991 before being succeeded by the E36 generation in 1992. The majority of models that rolled off the BMW production line were coupes, like this one on sale, but the Munich-based manufacturer did produce a limited number of convertibles too.The engine unit that gave the M3 its power was BMW’s S14 four-cylinder unit. It revved highly and was able to produce 192hp, with a top speed of 146mph in countries that legally required cars to have a catalytic converter. For countries that didn’t need one fitted, the M3 was able to generate 197hp.Of course, all that power would have been put to waste had BMW not made modifications to the body, and as such, changed virtually all aspects of it. A full body kit comprising front and rear spoilers, along with sill panels was fitted, and the windscreen was glued in as opposed to being mounted in a rubber frame. Changes were also made to the gearbox and suspension.
This model, like the majority of all other E30 M3s, is left-hand drive. That’s because there’s only believed to be one RHD model in existence, known as the “Holy Grail”. This is the bit of M3 history that requires some further digging. It’s claimed that the “Holy Grail” E30 M3 was actually built here in Australia and was shown at Sydney and Melbourne car shows, with the intention to make a claim for it to be built in full production number for Australia, New Zealand and the UK markets.
However, BMW decided not to pursue it (possibly because of a crash of the Australian stockmarket) and stuck with left-hand drive only models. A little further digging reveals one of the Holy Grail’s previous owners was the President of the New Zealand BMW Car Club, who bought it in Dunedin when it was essentially just sitting around waiting for something to happen with it because BMW didn’t want it.But anyway, back to this gorgeous model that can be yours. It’s an import and arrived in Australia in 2008 (alongside a 2002 Turbo, talk about a dream duo) and has been kept in immaculate condition (although the current owner admits the paintwork has been tampered with at some point). It’s claimed it hasn’t been driven on Australian roads yet, so you would be the first, and it rocks the slightly lesser powered 192hp engine (which is actually the rarer of the two with fewer models produced).
We could talk about it until we’re blue in the face, but we’ll let you swoon over the pictures and then head to Carsales to make an enquiry.

When it comes to working out, you don’t necessarily want an easy ride. Obviously you want to be able to complete your routine without needing an ambulance to take you the emergency room, but at the same time you want to make gains, and working out with weights that are easy to lift won’t make that happen.
There’s no shame in sweating your crown jewels off or being out of breath at the end of a workout, something super-fit human Commando Steve is more than happy to attest to. The Aussie personal trainer is on a mission to help us get fit during lockdown, even if it means doing it the hard way, as his latest Instagram post shows even he isn’t immune to feeling the full effects of a ‘proper’ workout.

It’s a simple one to follow, all you need is a skipping rope and a kettlebell (of a decent weight, we might add). You’ll need to use the skipping rope to warm up (if you’ve never used one before, we’d like to point your attention to Buddy Lee‘s intro video). Skip for 10 minutes but try and go max effort for one-minute bursts, six times. Ideally, you want to complete double-unders in this time (where the rope passes under your feet twice in one jump).
Then grab your kettlebell and perform snatches. Steve shows you the proper form in his video. Start with 10 snatches on each side in one minute and increase this by 1 rep each round – still keeping to one minute – until you can’t complete the required number within the one minute time frame.
We won’t beat around the bush, it doesn’t look easy. Even after the first round of 10 snatches, Steve looks exhausted. But we have every faith in you guys.
Your gains await.

Without the annual Watches & Wonder show being able to take place this year due to the global pandemic, watch manufacturers have instead had to resort to inventive new ways to announce their latest models. IWC Schaffhausen has done just that with its new Portugieser collection, dedicating a landing page on its website to the new range, including videos from the company’s CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr, talking about the collection.
Among the number of updates and refreshes this year, is a brand new model in the form of the Yacht Club Moon & Tide, which becomes the first IWC watch to introduce the company’s new tide indication. At first glance, it looks similar to the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph, but on closer inspection, you’ll be able to notice differences in the subdials.
The 6 o’clock subdial now shows the expected time of high and low tides, made possible thanks to a complex mechanism. IWC points out that there is a time difference of 12 hours and 24 minutes between two high tides, due to the fact the moon doesn’t rotate around the Earth at the same rate the Earth completes its full 24-hour rotation. A clear way to explain this is that if high tide occurs at midnight, the next high tide will be 12.24 pm and then 00.48 am and so on and so forth.
IWC’s engineers, therefore, had to work this calculation into the Yacht Club Moon & Tide’s movement. To read the Tide display, you need to take note of where the small red arrow is pointing. IWC’s example says that if the arrow is pointing to 12 o’clock on the tide display at 10 o’clock in the morning, then the high tide will be a slightly later than 12 because the tidal disc within the tide display will have moved in the two-hour timeframe.
When you take ownership of your Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, you will need to calibrate the display using tide tables for your specific location and it will remain accurate to within 10 minutes in 100 years.
At the 12 o’clock position you’ll find another sub-dial, this time to indicate the double moon phase, but now also shows strong spring and neap (weak) tides, which allows the wearer to understand the strength of the current tides.
IWC has opted for a blue and gold colour scheme for the Yacht Club Moon & Tide: 18-carat 5N gold case – which is slightly larger than previous Yacht Club models at 44.6mm – with blue dial, gold-plated hands and 18-carat 5N gold appliques. The case is attached to a blue rubber strap with textile inlay.
Running the whole show is IWC’s in-house 82835 calibre, which not only features Pellaton winding but a 60-hour power reserve as well. As with other models in the Portugieser family, you can gaze upon its beauty via the see-through sapphire-glass back.
It’s a stunning looking timepiece and one that slots perfectly into the wider Portugieser series. Pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.

While the global pandemic may have put a stop to the annual watch shows, it hasn’t stopped brands from releasing their latest models. Cartier is one of the first to announce its new lineup for 2020 and it includes the Santos Dumont XL – which not only, as the name suggests, arrives in a larger size – but it adds a mechanical movement.
The mechanical movement will be a big talking point for this watch, as up until now, it has sat in the ‘entry-level’ position within the Santos family, owing to the fact it has relied on a quartz movement. The 430 MC movement – which is, in fact, a Cartier branded version of the Piaget 430P – is, therefore, a welcome addition. It’s a manually wound movement, and you’ll likely need to give the cabochon-capped crown a few turns each morning due to a 38-hour power reserve, but in return, you’ll be getting a watch that’s incredibly thin.
Which brings us on nicely to the case. It’s XL by name and XL by nature, measuring 46.6mm lug-to-lug x 33.9mm, putting in IWC Big Pilot’s territory. However, because of the movement, it still remains remarkably slim at just 7.5mm. It should therefore still set as well on the wrist as its smaller siblings, thanks in part to its curved profile, although naturally, it will be preferred by gents with larger wrists.
Despite the larger form, the Santos Dumont XL remains true to the models’ styling, including blue sword-shaped hands sitting on a sunray satin-finished dial with Roman numerals, and exposed screws on the case. It’s available in the same three variations as the smaller models: 18K pink gold with grey alligator leather strap; 18K pink gold and steel with black alligator leather strap; and steel with navy blue alligator leather strap.
The larger size and mechanical movement bring with them slight price increases, although we still feel they can be considered affordable given the prestige of the brand. The pink gold/grey alligator leather will retail for AU$22,500; pink gold & steel/black alligator leather, $11,700; and steel/navy blue alligator leather $8,450.

We all know the feeling of being stuck next to a cougher. Annoying at the best, life-threatening at worst (something that never would have crossed your mind, probably, until this year). But, post-pandemic, airlines are going to be under severe pressure to keep passengers virus-free.While it’s not economically viable to strip and replace seats with capsules, some handy Italian engineers have come up with the next best thing.Aviointeriors is a company based in Italy, which recently came out with two designs that could see your economy seat look markedly different in the future.
View this post on Instagram
The first of which involves fitting each seat with a hygiene screen. This plastic shield goes around your head and side, preventing contact with the passenger next to you.The designers at Aviointeriors call it ‘glassafe’ and say it’s transparent to allow communication, whilst also eliminating the chance of breath propagation.“Glassafe (creates) an isolated volume around the passenger in order to avoid or minimise contacts and interactions via air between passenger and passenger, so as to reduce the probability of contamination by viruses or other,” Aviointeriors said in a statement.
“Each passenger has their own space isolated from others, even from people who walk through the aisle.”
“It is made of easy cleaning and safe hygienic materials. The option is available with the shield in opaque material or with different degrees of transparency.”Before the cynics throw their ‘5G: a conspiracy’ booklets at me, and ask: ‘if airlines can’t afford to maintain their jets at the moment, how the hell are they going to purchase new products?’ consider this: in order to implement this aspect of the design, nothing needs to be removed from the aircraft. Why? Each plane doesn’t need to reinstall seats into their cabins, the shield simply fits onto existing ones. The problem comes with Aviointeriors’ second idea: along with the shield, Aviointeriors has designed a seating plan called the Janus seat, inspired by the two-faced Roman God.The idea of this design is that the middle passenger faces the back of the plane, with the window and aisle passengers still facing forwards. So far so smart, right? Wrong: the middle seat passenger would still face two people – the ones behind them. Even if there were a way around this, it would be costly to turn around every middle seat (DMARGE is currently looking into whether seats are already designed to pivot and move, or if whole new seats would need to be installed).
View this post on Instagram
Passengers also have concerns about privacy: as one man commented on Aviointeriors Instagram page: “crotch watching might be a problem here. Not to mention you’d have someone’s face in your peripheral field of vision for the duration of the trip.”
“You’d feel uncomfortable every time they turned their head for whatever reason.”
Worse: the forward/aft configuration would likely increase the difficulty of in-flight services, as well as complicate emergency evacuation procedures (though, as Forbes notes, “Greater row separation could address these questions, and give passengers more legroom”).We like the first idea though – that of the plastic shields. If you’re with us on that you might like to know more. The first fact to note is that, while both designs are ready, both need to go through safety tests to be approved for commercial use.“All national authorities worldwide are trying to block this pandemic through a series of actions and recommendations and we want to contribute with our ideas and proposals in the interests of the whole community,” an Aviointeriors spokesperson told The Daily Mail.
“With this objective in mind, we have studied new solutions that take into account social distancing among passengers sitting in economy class, where there is a condition of higher density, but with characteristics that remain applicable even in the lower density classes such as premium economy or business class.”
“We have worked and we will continue to develop products specifically designed to make the travels of the near-future post-virus ever safer and in accordance with the new requirements for passengers who will have to share the spaces available for the duration of the transport.”

As expected, it’s slim pickings right now when it comes to celebrity style. Even the rich and famous aren’t immune from the global crisis, so many are staying indoors to evade whatever paparazzi might be loitering around. That hasn’t stopped some of them turning to at-home selfies, however, and the Houston Rockets’ Russell Westbrook is the latest to share his own personal snap.
The Point Guard, who has a fair few records and MVP titles to his name, certainly knows how to command the court but going by the comments on his latest post on Instagram, he needs to rethink his style game. It’s a simple fit for sure – and we’ll admit, a step away from his usual accolade of being the king of fashion in the NBA – pairing a white t-shirt with white pants, but with some colour added in by way of a hi-vis beanie and a pair of his own Why Not? Zer0.3 “Splash Zone” sneakers, made in collaboration with the Jordan brand.
View this post on Instagram
Westbrook has a long history with Jordan, and has released several pairs of the Why Not? Zer0.3 sneaker in the past. The pair he’s wearing in this picture is inspired by the toy water guns he played with as a child and even come in a toy-inspired retail box. They were released just this month.
We’re not against Russell’s fit at all, but Instagram being Instagram has its own opinion. The only real positive comment we can see is “Westbrook’s frame is insane, can fit into anything”, but even that was shot down with some replies.
Scrolling down we get to other comments such as,
“It’s so far beyond bad it’s literally unbelievable.”
“Russ became a painter during quarantine”
and
“No. Just no.”
We’ll leave you to make your own mind up, but hey, at least he’s putting some thought into his appearance, unlike some other famous faces that have been spotted strolling around their neighbourhoods.
