From vaping to saving the world’s wildlife, there’s plenty that Leonardo DiCaprio has made cool over the course of his career. Now, the actor has put his stamp of approval on luxe New York living with this East 11th St Penthouse by Delos.

The luxurious industrial penthouse located in New York‘s Greenwich Village neighbourhood is just one of many homes, office, schools and other indoor environments transformed by wellness real estate firm Delos that create spaces that nurture and promote human health and well-being and focus on environmental sustainability and green technology.

Delos’ East 11th St Penthouse has some pretty slick features to encourage good health, including vitamin C-infused showers, kitchens fitted out with juicing stations and lighting designed to promote sounds sleep…and it’ll only set you back a cool $39.8 million.

Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio himself serves on the Delos advisory board, along with self-improvement guru Deepak Chopra and doctors at the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. DiCaprio even joined forces with Delos’ chief executive Paul Scialla to create an eco-conscious resort off the coast of Belize last year.

The shiny new listing sees Airbnb team up with Disney sequel Finding Dory for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. You and three guests could win the chance to stay in a beautiful, billowing reef home in a neighbourhood otherwise populated by 600 types of corals, 100 species of jellyfish, 3,000 varieties of molluscs, 500 species of worms, 1,625 types of fish, 133 varieties of sharks and rays, and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins.

World-famous chef Neil Perry will be on hand to whip up a meal from local North Queensland produce and treat you to a late lunch on the cay. Later on you’ll go for a dive and tour the private coral gardens with a renowned marine biologist. The trip will also include a jaunt in a glass-bottomed kayak and a private screening of Finding Dory.

Lest you worry about the damaging impact your stay could have on an already-fragile ecosystem, Airbnb notes that the accommodation is made from local recycled materials and sustainably-sourced local pine wood. It will be repurposed as a turtle hatching facility with the help of local marine biologists following the contest. Airbnb will also plant wetland plants for every guest visiting the Aussie region for the remainder of 2016.

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is renowned as one of the world’s most deadly races on two wheels. The competition has claimed countless lives over the years including two this year alone, but that hasn’t stopped the world’s bravest riders from converging on this annual event.

Forging his name in the history books this year is Irish rider Michael Dunlop who averaged 214km/h throughout the 60km course in a blistering sub-17-minute lap time. According to most TT riders and spectators, that lap time is astonishing on all accounts (besides the whole record thing).

General Pants Co, the Australian multi-brand retailer loved by Bondi hipsters and teenage girls alike has just jumped across the pond to set up shop in the United States.

Located in the La Brea area of Los Angeles, ‘The Local by General Pants Co’ is the retailer’s first-ever U.S. store location. The boutique carries a nice cross-section of Australian brands that are mostly new to the LA market, cementing Australia’s presence in the American city with Aussie wardrobe staples like Ksubi, Insight, Arvust, Spencer Project, Zanerobe, Rolla’s, Barney Cools and Neuw.

“With a number of great Australian designers in high demand we thought it was time for a multi-brand concept to break in. Multi-brand retail is nothing new in the States, but we feel there’s room to carve out a niche by keeping the brand mix tight and purely Australian,” said General Pants CEO, Craig King.

Along with GP’s bricks and mortar presence, the retailer will launch an e-commerce site and a second store in New York later this year.

To create a bit of buzz around General Pants’ move to LA, the retailer will be activating a series of events over summer showcase the brand’s cultural influences like music, fashion, and urban subcultures.

The thought of your boss watching you sleep is enough to unnerve the most high flying workplace performer.

But when your boss is Virgin Airlines founder and billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, things get dealt with in a very different manner. In the worst case scenario after this particular snap, it’d probably be voluntary dismissal through embarrassment.

Spare a thought for this poor airline worker who decided to get some shut eye in the Virgin Australia’s office lounge on the day that the big boss was due to visit and check in on local operations.

Branson later spoke of the hilarious situation on his blog, saying: “I popped into the office and the airport to say hello and check in to see what the team are up to. This guy wasn’t up to much at all – I caught him sleeping on the job! Wow, did he get a shock when I woke him up. He must have thought he was dreaming because he went straight back to sleep. To be fair, he was on standby, getting some much needed rest.”

No doubt this highlights Branson’s cool boss demeanour but more importantly, the image highlights how uncomfortable the sleeping employee is and reinforces the scientific notion of why men should sleep naked.

That’s why, it’s our aim to make it a little easier with our guide to American political jargon.

Republican & Democratic Party

Republican Party: The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP (Grand Old Party) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the U.S. Its current ideology is American conservatism which contrasts with the Democrats’ modern liberalism. The Republican Party’s platform involves support for free market capitalism, free enterprise, business, a strong national defence, deregulation, restrictions on labor unions, social-conservative policies (particularly opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage), and traditional values, usually with a Judeo-Christian ethical foundation. 

Democratic Party: The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the U.S. The party’s philosophy of modern liberalism advocates social and economic equality, along with the welfare state. It pursues a mixed economy by providing government intervention and regulation in the economy. These interventions, such as the introduction of social programs, support for labor unions, moves toward universal health care and equal opportunity, consumer protection, and environmental protection form the core of the party’s economic policy.

Caucus

A caucus is a local meeting where members of a political party gather to show support for a candidate. Caucuses involve many separate meetings held at the same time at multiple locations.

A political party determines its nominees for statewide or national offices by the combined recommendations of its state caucuses.

Both the Democratic and Republican parties have their own rules governing state caucuses and those rules vary from state to state.

Electoral College

The Electoral College was established in 1787 as a compromise between election of the president by Congress and direct election by the people.

The number of electors varies by state. Each state is allocated a number of electors based on how many U.S. representatives it has, plus its two U.S. senators. Generally, state political party leaders nominate electors at their state party conventions or the state party’s central committee elects them.

After Americans cast their votes in the presidential election, electors in 50 state capitals and in Washington choose the next president. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the president and vice president.

General Election

In a general election, voters choose their candidate for federal, state and local offices. These candidates are either nominated by their political party, or they run as independents.

Primary Election

A primary election is a contest in which a political party selects its candidates to run in the general election. The outcome is determined by the registered voters who cast their ballots at their local poll places.

For the presidential nomination only, voters select delegates to cast their ballots for a candidate at the party’s national convention. For all other primary races, voters vote directly for a candidate.

Some primaries are closed. This means they are restricted to voters who have registered their political party affiliations. In other words, only registered Republications will be allowed to vote in some primaries to select the Republican candidate for president. In open primaries, any registered voter is allowed to cast a ballot, regardless of party affiliation.

Like the general election, primaries are conducted by the states. Unlike the general election, states set the schedule for primaries.

Write-in Candidate

A write-in candidate’s name does not appear on the ballot in an election. Voters can vote for such a candidate by writing the person’s name in a designated space on the ballot.

Other Important Terms

Affiliation

The act of connecting or associating with a person or organization.

Ballot

The official list of candidates running for office.

Candidate

A person who seeks or is nominated for an office.

Delegate

A person authorized to act as a representative.

Superdelegate

A delegate to the Democratic National Convention who is seated automatically and chooses for whom they want to vote. These Democratic Party superdelegates include distinguished party leaders, and elected officials, including all Democratic members of the House and Senate and sitting Democratic governors.

National Convention

A meeting held every four years by each of the major political parties to nominate the party’s official presidential candidate.

Nomination

The act of submitting a name for candidacy.

Poll

The place where votes are cast and registered.

Referendum

A popular vote on a proposed public measure or actual law.
