This Rare Supreme-Branded Rolex May Be The Most Obnoxious Watch Ever
This Rare Supreme-Branded Rolex May Be The Most Obnoxious Watch Ever

There’s perhaps only one brand on the planet more desirable than Supreme, and that’s Rolex. But what about a collaboration between the pair? Shut up and take my money.

As it happens, this is no mere hypebeast’s pipe dream. There is indeed such a thing as a Supreme Rolex. Now, in 2021, one New Yorker has got his hands on one and has put it up for sale – and it’s one rude piece of wrist candy.

Justin Reed, a creative who’s quickly gained a reputation for his ability to source rare and desirable streetwear and other ‘hyped’ collabs, caused a stir earlier this week when he listed one of these rare and desirable watches for sale on his e-commerce platform. He’s also shed some light on the history of these watches, which were once considered nothing but a rumour.

“[In 2013], Supreme decided to customize a small handful of Rolex watches and gift them to a select group of friends and family members of the company.. it is believed that only 20 of these exclusive watches were ever produced,” he explains.

The caseback of the watch is engraved with Supreme’s famous ‘box’ logo. Image: @justinreed

Specifically, the Submariner ref. 114060 ‘No Date’ was the model chosen for the family and friends release, with well-known British watch customiser Bamford Watch Department tapped for the commission. In this sense, it wasn’t a collaboration between Rolex and Supreme per se – although the watches can be considered ‘official’ Supreme goods, if you catch our drift.

RELATED: Chopard & Bamford Watch Department Have Created The Gentleman Driver’s Ideal Watch

“The extent of the customization work was overall rather subtle and minimal,” Reed continues. “Supreme’s ‘FUCK EM’ slogan appears in bold, red text above the Submariner name on the dial (more than slightly reminiscent of a red-line Submariner or Sea-Dweller), and the case-back is engraved with Supreme’s signature ‘box’ logo.”

Imagine being bold enough to walk around with that on your watch’s dial… Let alone wear such a rare Rollie.

Mounted on an Oyster bracelet, the watch Reed has for sale is far from mint condition – chipped and worn, it was a watch that saw action (which we actually respect). That said, it comes with its original box, wallet, manual/chronometer certification and Rolex warranty card, as well as a unique Supreme ‘warranty card’ which adds further credence to its official status.

Speaking of rare Rolexes, check out our round-up of the five most expensive Rolexes of all time below.

The price? Reed’s asking US$100,000… Or almost 10 times the retail price of a normal Submariner. Bloody hell. Undoubtedly, this is a rare and desirable watch, but we’re not quite sure who the target market for it is.

The average Supreme fan is probably too young and not wealthy enough to spend $100,000 on a watch. Those who would have that sort of money would probably baulk at the fact it’s pretty pre-worn, as well as the fact that you’re paying a huge premium just to say ‘fuck’ to the world.

RELATED: Rolex Secretly Offers A New Version Of Their Most Luxurious Watch Ever

But maybe that’s the appeal. Supreme has built its reputation on in-your-face branding and being provocative. They’re a status symbol and counter-cultural force all rolled into one. Rolexes, too, are unmistakable status symbols; they’re hardly subtle watches.

All we know is that we’d rather pay $100,000 for this thing than wear one of Supreme’s Jacob & Co. collaborations…

Elon Musk Toilet Tweet Showcases The Absurdity Of ‘Shitcoin’ Markets
Elon Musk Toilet Tweet Showcases The Absurdity Of ‘Shitcoin’ Markets

Elon Musk has the Twitter community pulling their hair out with curiosity over what could either be much ado about nothing (a rich dude mucking around on his phone while on the porcelain throne) or a series of cryptic clues which could lead to the next small-cap crypto to skyrocket. It could also be both (due to the bizarre fact so many people hang off of his every word and try to reverse engineer popular projects off the back of his statements).

Anyway, here’s what he just tweeted.

After one hour ago writing: “Just dropped some friends off at the pool” and “Splish splash,” Elon Musk then followed up with a tweet of an angel emoji.

Musk then, 24 minutes later, wrote: “I love a great whine.”

See the tweets below.

His tweets were met by various crypto Twitter accounts trying to spruik themselves in the comments section, presumably in the hope people might think Musk was referring to them, as opposed to describing the process of taking a number two on the toilet, or actually dropping his friends off at a pool.

Another user actually speculated as far as “he’s in Austin and it’s warm there,” seemingly taking his statements literally.

Another expressed concern for Musk’s circulation, having potentially sat on the toilet for so long (Musk recently claimed 50% of his tweets were written on the toilet).

Others saw the chance for some shameless self-promotion, likely realising Musk was joking around but figuring they may as well, as they had nothing to lose. Baby Doge was one of them.

One Twitter account called “Splash” appeared to do a similar thing, and responded to Musk’s tweet with a series of rocket emojis.

The “Splash” Twitter account was created in November 2021. Perhaps they were laying in wait for Elon to tweet about toilet activity? Their first ever tweet was on November the 11th, it appears, and Elon Musk’s admission that he tweets on the toilet was on November the 22nd.

According to The Bit Times a token called Splish Splash on ETH was deployed today and is being exchanged on uniwswap.

At the time of writing, it is not, at the time of writing, coming up in BSC Scan’s BEP-20 Tokens by volume list, however. So maybe people are getting wise to random tokens being made off the back of Musk’s statements?

Or maybe most people actually got the toilet reference?

Either way, this is still a great demonstration of how Musk is able to influence crypto shitcoin markets, and the absurd world many people shake their heads at, and which many other people love to gamble around in. Musk has previously cryptically tweeted about existing small cryptos like CumRocket, sending their prices, for a time, soaring.

As DMARGE found out the hard way, playing around in this pool can get you some serious acid burns.

RELATED: I Invested $1,000 Into Cryptocurrency. It Was A Huge Mistake

An Elon Musk lookalike account has also spammed Musk’s various recent tweets with what looks like a crypto competition scam, and Twitter user Patrick Parish commented on the absurdity of the whole situation, writing: “Somehow these tweets while you were laying rope will turn into a 12-1 stock split tweet tomorrow.”

Others are simply tearing their brains out (or posting memes to that effect), wondering if there is a deeper meaning to it all.

Then there was one Twitter user who asked Musk if he was drunk.

If this doesn’t sum up Twitter in 2021, what does?

Although this series of tweets showcases quite well the absurdity of one aspect of crypto markets (shitcoins), the broader crypto industry has achieved some milestones in institutional acceptance lately.

DMARGE spoke to James Whelan – Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney – on Thursday the 14th of October. Mr Whelan told DMARGE: “I think that the investment community is now seeing that there needs to be an allocation to a certain amount of crypto because people are seeing it as an alternative asset and potentially, touch wood, god forbid, a store of wealth.”

“Look at the Bitcoin price vs the Gold price – annoyingly – inflation is absolutely pumping [so] why is gold not performing? Look at the Bitcoin price – potentially people are buying Bitcoin instead of Gold as that store of wealth against inflation… Maybe.”

Mr Whelan added: “Right now all eyes are on the SEC in the United States on their approval of the first crypto ETF (or the first bitcoin ETF), which will then mean that people will have a place [to invest]. Once it’s done and accredited by the SEC it falls under all of their rules about financial stability and it has all these boxes it needs to tick and it comes under the coverage of one of the largest markets in the world and one of the better regulators in one of the largest markets in the world.”

“If the SEC lets this [happen] it means the ETF will be approved, which then means people like me actually have somewhere to invest safely on the market on the same platform where everyone else can see all this stuff.”

“The investment community will have a more safe and secure place to actually have that area where I can say to a client on their portfolio report: ‘Look at this, as discussed, here is your 5% allocation to a Bitcoin ETF. It’s run by a reputable ETF provider, it’s on a market which is where all your other stuff is as well.’ That’s so important for a client to see.”

As DMARGE has reported previously, a lot of the rest of crypto still remains a bit of a Wild West. So when it comes to ‘meme coins’ (or even legit-looking coins that claim to have a use case but which you really don’t know anything solid about) however, be warned you are playing with fire.

On that note: DMARGE sought comment from Vanguard Australia earlier this year (around May/June) about the world of crypto and recieved the following statement in response. “We do urge caution against speculating in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are largely unregulated and accompanied by a number of considerable risks including the potential loss of investment entirely in some instances.”

We were also pointed to an article in the Australian Financial review, featuring a quote from Vanguard Australia’s Balaji Gopal. “A long-term portfolio should be comprised of stocks, bonds and cash,” Balaji Gopal, head of Vanguard Australia’s Personal Investor platform, told The Australian Financial Review.

“We are quite happy to sit this one [cryptocurrency ETF] out, and we urge investors to be very wary of the risks of cryptocurrencies.”

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies fall short of Vanguard’s house definition for an asset class, commodity or even currency, Mr Gopal said, because they do not generate income or cash flow. Nor are they a store of wealth, unit of account or medium of exchange, he added, rejecting popular conceptions.

“Cryptocurrencies defy any kind of categorisation,” he said. “Their characteristics are more similar to collectables like fine art, exotic cars or baseball cards.”

Liver King Reveals The Secret To ‘Catching Dinner’ When The Supermarket Is Closed
Liver King Reveals The Secret To ‘Catching Dinner’ When The Supermarket Is Closed

Regardless of your ethical perspective on American game shooters prancing off to Africa to collect ‘trophies,’ what practically no one can deny is the benefits old school living – including hunting and gathering – has (or would have) on your anatomy if you were to be able to do it in modern society. Speaking of which – one of the most ripped men in America, Liver King, who very much promotes the benefits of a barefoot lifestyle (not to mention eating some of the less commonly consumed parts of animals), recently took to Instagram with a primal workout technique that could get you shredded.

RELATED: Liver King Tucks Into Some Testes For A Light Snack

“How many men out there are doing what we were hard-wired to do?” Liver King asks. “Are you fighting, hunting, providing, protecting, persevering?”

Watch Liver King demonstrate fake hunting in the video below

“You don’t have to go all in and start throwing spears… You can fight by looking for opportunities that scare you… You can practice fasting to simulate a failed hunt… You can do an intense workout, like assault bike intervals to simulate a successful hunt… Give it a try and see how alive you start to feel!”

In other words: you don’t need to move to Texas and buy a rifle to start living healthier.

You can start by envisioning your workouts as more than workouts.

Liver King also dropped the following piece of advice in another Instagram post two weeks ago, which relates to this.

“You see Liver King running with a sandbag,” he wrote. “What I see is Liver King bolstering a fallen comrade. Trekking through natural terrain. Returning my tribe safely from battle.”

“Turn your movement into something meaningful. An ode to our ancestors. And you’ll never miss a workout again.”

He also recently said: “If it started raining before a hunt, guess what? Our ancestors had no choice but to endure the rain… Hard-wearing resilience is already encoded in our DNA. Our daily habits decide whether we express it… How are you getting cold today, primals?”

Whether or not you, personally, need such aggrandizement to get yourself to work out, Liver King’s message clearly resonates with his followers.

One wrote: “Your killing it your speeches on your stories are inspiring thanks brotha for getting me up off my a$$ I just need a good workout routine / eating routine too.”

Another wrote: “I’m glad someone else understands this. I do most of my runs with my plate carrier on as a means to simulate war conditions.”

Though this might seem a little extreme, perhaps if we hadn’t got quite so soft as a society then war analogies wouldn’t grab people’s attention quite so hard?

In any case, the debate continued in the comments. One user wrote: “Life expectancy for our ancestors was like 30 years old. Why tf would I want to live like them.”

Liver King responded to this: “Don’t knock it till you try it… What if there is actually a better way to be healthy… what if it’s accessible to everyone… what if the key to unlocking a robust and long (quality) life lies in our evolutionary past… that the things that our DNA evolved with (sleep, diet, movement, sun, soil, cold, fight, bong, etc) over the past 2.5 million years are the things that our DNA still expects in the modern world to heal and be healthy.”

“About life expectancy, if our early ancestors survived childbirth and made it into adolescence, they lived a quality of life that we would envy… free of depression, free of anxiety, free of autoimmune, free of infertility, free of low energy, free of low ambition, free of low manhood. Look no further than modern-day hunter-gatherers to glean some insight.”

Over on his ‘fake hunting’ video another user wrote: “Even though I can’t bring myself to eat like you yet. Your videos along with finding out I am prediabetic, inspired me to get back in shape and to get back to being healthy.”

Another said: “And even though my legs feel like jello after pushing them to failure last night, your story where you said to take the hard route sunk and made me take the stairs all day at work. You inspire people even amongst the haters. Keep being an inspiration!”

As for where he gets his own meat, when questioned “Do you hunt and slaughter your own meat, or do you buy it from someone or somewhere?” Liver King responded: “First and foremost, I get my Liver and Bone Marrow from the wild animals that my boys and I ethically hunt (we call it a sacred hunt).”

“If I need supplemental Liver and Bone Marrow, my go-to is my local butcher and/or local farmer, then White Oak Pasture. If you can, go to your local butcher or local farmers market, and get the real McCoy… if you can’t (or won’t), or if you’re looking for other nutrient-dense organs like Heart, Spleen, Kidney, Thymus or Brain, then yes, get yourself some high-quality desiccated liver capsules.”

Food for thought indeed.

Daniel Ricciardo’s Former Boss Finally Delivers On His Infamous Tattoo Bet
Daniel Ricciardo’s Former Boss Finally Delivers On His Infamous Tattoo Bet

When Australian Formula One champ Daniel Ricciardo joined Renault back in 2019, he made a bet with then-team boss Cyril Abiteboul that if he managed to get on the podium, Abiteboul would have to get a tattoo. As it happens, Ricciardo got two podiums during his time with the French team, managing third places at both the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix and 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Ricciardo has since left Renault for McLaren – much to Abiteboul’s disappointment – but a bet’s a bet. After much speculation that Cyril wasn’t going to honour his agreement with Danny Ric, the fiesty Frenchman has finally put his money where his mouth is.

Ricciardo joined Abiteboul at the London tattoo parlour of Jelle Soos, a well-known traditional style tattoo artist who’s a mate of Ricciardo’s (and is responsible for more than a few of his tatts). It was Abiteboul’s first tattoo – and it’s clear in the video that he was more than a bit nervous. Check out the hilarious episode below.

The terms of the bet were that Ricciardo could choose the design of the tattoo, but Abiteboul could choose the size and location. Abiteboul elected to get it on his leg (probably because it’s easy to cover up, and the design the pair settled on features a minimalist Honey Badger motif framed by one half of the iconic Renault logo.

Then, just for fun, we saw a role reversal: Ricciardo went on to give Soos a cheeky little tattoo of his racing number 3 on the artist’s finger. Good on Soos, but stick to your day job, Danny Ric…

Ricciardo’s well-known for his impressive canvas of ink. Other fellow F1 drivers known for their prominent tattoos include Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen. Ricciardo actually got his very first tattoo, a ship sailing around the world and a lighthouse representing home, back in 2013, when he was on the verge of getting his drive with Red Bull.

Seems as if tattoo challenges are the new big thing in F1. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff challenged Ricciardo’s current boss, McLaren’s Zak Brown, to get a tattoo – a result of an Industry Leaders’ Challenge begun by the Grand Prix Trust, a charity that helps support anyone who has worked in F1 and who has fallen on hard times.

Brown followed through on Wolff’s wager (much quicker than Abiteboul, it must be said) with a tattoo that honours Ricciardo’s win at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix: his first since the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix and the first for McLaren since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Brown also made a bet with Ricciardo that if he got a podium, he’d let Ricciardo drive Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s 1984 No. 3 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo NASCAR (one of many rare cars in Brown’s collection) – which the Aussie got to do ahead of the 2021 United States Grand Prix after his triumph in Monza.

Forget Sleeping Pills: This Is Your Answer To A Perfect Night’s Sleep
Forget Sleeping Pills: This Is Your Answer To A Perfect Night’s Sleep

If you’re someone who can’t sleep at night, or worse, you suffer from insomnia, which Healthline defines as some who “finds it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both,” then you may be inclined to reach for some sleeping pills.

But, there may be something else you can try that is just as, if not more effective and doesn’t require you to put drugs into your body. Benzodiazepines – a common drug prescribed to those who suffer from insomnia – were found to be the “most common substance found in male overdose deaths in the past 20 years in Australia.”

RELATED: Psychologist Warns Of Growing Trend Ruining Australian Men’s Sleep

As CNN Health reports, a new study, published Wednesday, November 24 in the JAMA Psychiatry journal, has found that “undergoing cognitive behavioural sleep training may help prevent depression in older adults with insomnia.”

Cognitive behavioural sleep training can be likened to therapy, since it teaches you, and gives you the tools to help break any bad habits you might have in order for your mind and body to get into a state where good sleep is made possible.

The study’s author, Dr Michael Irwin, says “some 30% to 50% of older adults complain of insomnia,” a condition that has been proven time and time again can be a major contributor towards suffering from depression.

In order to obtain his findings, Dr Irwin took 291 adult participants all over the age of 60 and all of whom had insomnia. Importantly, all of the participants “had no major depression or major health events in past year.”

The group was then split into two, with one group undergoing CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) while the other was given SET (sleep education therapy).

SET taught participants about sleep hygiene, characteristics of healthy sleep, sleep biology and how stress can impact sleep. CBT-I, meanwhile, is more in-depth and comprises five components: “cognitive therapy, stimulus control, sleep restriction, sleep hygiene, and relaxation.”

Sleep Foundation says CBT-I “focuses on exploring the connection between the way we think, the things we do, and how we sleep.” It theorises that insomnia can be a vicious cycle. Sleep Foundation gives an example of this, saying “prior experiences of insomnia may lead to worry about falling asleep. This worry may lead to spending excessive time in bed to try to force sleep.”

“Both worry and excessive time in bed can make falling and staying asleep more challenging. This can become a frustrating, nightly cycle that can be difficult to break.”

A woman trying to sleep. Image: Head Topics

CBT-I works to break these habits. Stimulus control, for example, involves “getting people to get out of bed when they’re not able to sleep. Most people stay in bed, fretting about not falling asleep, which then turns the bed into a negative space,” Dr Irwin told CNN Health.

“Instead, people are taught to get up after 10 minutes of tossing and turning, do quiet, non-stimulating activities and not come back to bed until they are sleepy.”

The key difference in how the two therapy programs were delivered, is that the CBT-I group received in-person training with a trained therapist for the eight-week duration. The SET group simply had to take the information they were given and, according to Dr Irwin, “figure out how to use it without our help.”

With the CBT-I group, for example, a therapist worked with them to disrupt their “dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs about sleep.”

CNN Health cites Wendy Troxel, a senior behavioural scientist at RAND Corporation, but who was not involved in the study, as saying: “The benefit of this treatment approach is that it used the most evidence-based behavioural treatment for insomnia, CBT-I, which has been proven to be as effective, longer-lasting, and (have) fewer side effects than sleep medications – which can be particularly problematic in older adults.”

Following the eight week treatment period, participants were then monitored for a further three years (only 81 from the CBT-I group and 77 of the SET group agreed to the full 36 months of follow-up) and were asked every month about symptoms of depression.

The study concluded, “Those in the CBT-I group with sustained remission of insomnia disorder had an 82.6% decreased likelihood of depression compared with those in the SET group without sustained remission of insomnia disorder.”

As for the SET group, the study found “modest effects in improving and treating insomnia but they were not durable. They didn’t last.”

Wendy Troxel also added, “What is exciting about these findings is that they are among the first to demonstrate that treating insomnia with a behavioural strategy, not a pill, can prevent the development of depression in older adults.”

Another strategy people have found useful (separate from this study) for getting a better night’s sleep, is to sleep in the same room, but in a different bed to their partner. Watch health hacker Dave Asprey explain this technique below.

It should be worth noting this study was conducted on adults over 60-years-old. Dr Irwin deliberately chose this demographic because: “Older adults with insomnia have a high risk of incident and recurrent depression. Depression prevention is urgently needed, and such efforts have been neglected for older adults.”

This means the results can’t necessarily deliver the same for adults under 60, although the study certainly does show that CBT-I can be an incredibly effective form of treatment for insomnia.

Man Hitches A Ride To The USA In Astonishing Fashion
Man Hitches A Ride To The USA In Astonishing Fashion

You may think you’ve endured some rough flights, what with the tray tables, death stares, cramped seats and window shade battles, but this story should take all of your grievances and shove them into an overhead locker.

A man has been found in Miami airport having unbelievably hitched a ride in the landing gear of an American Airlines plane from Guatemala. Flights from Guatemala to Miami normally take about two and a half hours. The man remarkably survived the trip.

Video footage posted on Instagram and Twitter by local news outlet @onlyindade shows a lot of cars and ground marshalls and a Miami Dade Fire Rescue official offering the man water with a stretcher nearby. The man looked dazed. The person filming can be heard saying in Spanish: “Look where he was, look where he was,” while showing the interior of the landing gear. “Poor guy.”

Another video by @onlyindade is captioned: “This man arrived to MIA in the landing gear of a plane from a Guatemlala flight. The flight about about two hours and thirty minutes and witness says he was unharmed.” The man was turned over to US immigration officials and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

A spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said: “Persons are taking extreme risks when they try to conceal themselves in confined spaces such as an aircraft. This incident remains under investigation.” American Airlines has said in a statement. “We are working with law enforcement in their investigation.”

The Guardian reports: “Guatemala has accounted for a large portion of some 1.7 million migrants apprehended or expelled by US border agents over the past year, many of them Central Americans fleeing violent gangs and grinding poverty.”

According to The Guardian, “An immigration attorney, Angel Leal, told WTVJ the Guatemalan stowaway would be detained by CBP while facing an expedited removal order.”

Comments beneath the videos on social media show some people believe the man should be allowed to stay in America.

One Instagram user wrote: “The horrible things they have to endure in their country to even consider doing something like this. Poor guy, glad he’s okay. Let him stay!” Another commented: “This is a miracle. Crazy how he is still alive. Desperate ppl do desperate things He deserves to stay after that.”

“That’s one way to skip TSA lines,” wrote another.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle to have survived in the wheel well of an airplane, let alone a 737 if this is one. Give the man his papers.”

Another wasn’t so sure, writing, “I’m leaning towards letting him in and stay since he survived. Of course, that may lead to many others trying and failing.”

Piaget Opens Must-Visit New Luxury Watch ‘Salon’ In Sydney
Piaget Opens Must-Visit New Luxury Watch ‘Salon’ In Sydney

Sydney’s famous Pitt Street has always been a luxury shopping destination, but in recent years, it’s become somewhat of a watch lover’s nirvana. That’s in no small part thanks to the number of high-profile boutiques that have opened up in the iconic Westfield Sydney CBD department store, including brands like Grand Seiko, Gucci and TAG Heuer.

Now another influential brand calls Westfield Sydney CBD home: Piaget. The 147-year-old Maison, best known for making some of the thinnest and most luxurious watches on the planet, has stunned the Sydney horological landscape by opening an exciting new Piaget Salon in collaboration with Ascentier that sets a new benchmark for savoir-faire and sumptuousness in the Harbour City.

Why ‘salon’? Well, it’s demonstrative of Piaget’s status as both a watchmaker and a jeweller. It’s also demonstrative of their intention to be more than just a traditional watch and jewellery boutique, and become a destination.

That mission in of itself is a reflection of the brand’s history. In 1959, Piaget opened its first Salon at the Rue du Rhône in Geneva – a unique store that became a must-visit social hub of the day. Now, nearly 60 years later, Piaget’s trying to replicate that old-school, customer-focused offering, just by Sydney harbour rather than Lake Geneva.

Inside the Piaget Salon.

Bathed in light and swathes of the iconic Piaget Blue, the Sydney Salon is an inviting, inspiring place to be. Piaget’s famous haute horlogerie et joaillerie take pride of place here: the store crafted like a jewel itself. Different parts of the store showcase Piaget’s myriad collections, including Piaget Polo, Limelight Gala, Possession, Altiplano, and Piaget Rose.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Ascentier on this new Piaget Salon that will play a major role in the expansion of our brand identity in the Australian market. This execution of the interior and exterior design pays homage to the Maison’s foundation of generous and festive values that we know will be welcomed with open arms by Sydney residents,” Gaspard Barthelemy, Piaget Australia’s brand manager relates.

Open seven days a week, you can find the Piaget Salon on Google Maps here.

“LEGENDARY”: Remembering Virgil Abloh’s Most Iconic Moments
“LEGENDARY”: Remembering Virgil Abloh’s Most Iconic Moments

Just hours ago, we received the heartbreaking news that Virgil Abloh, famed American fashion designer and creative icon, passed away at the age of 41. According to a press release put out by his family, Abloh had been privately battling a rare, aggressive form of cancer – cardiac angiosarcoma – for over two years, “undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”

The news has devastated the world and triggered an outpouring of condolences, including those celebrities like Drake, Pharrell Williams, Marc Jacobs, Daniel Arsham and Takashi Murakami, just to name a few. The hidden nature of his illness – combined with the fact that just weeks ago, Abloh was in Qatar hosting cultural events and a museum exhibit dedicated to his works – has left fans in total shock.

In recognition of his impact and legacy, join us on a journey through some of Virgil Abloh’s most iconic moments below.

It would be an understatement to call Virgil Abloh one of the pre-eminent cultural tastemakers of the 21st century. Perhaps best known as the creative director of Louis Vuitton and the founder of luxury label Off-White, Abloh was a true multidisciplinary: an entrepreneur, DJ, industrial designer and philosopher.

His deconstructed style and highly industrial aesthetic – one of the most deceptively simple yet recognisable design languages ever devised – has manifested in clothing, accessories, cars, planes furniture, artwork, music, food and drinks.

The first African-American to be artistic director at a French luxury fashion house, Abloh arguably invented modern streetwear and has been single-handedly responsible for sparking a renewed interest in design among a whole generation of young people. His passing is truly a loss.

As his family has related, Abloh often said that “everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations. In that spirit, we’d like to share some of Abloh’s most iconic and inspiring moments to celebrate a life well-lived.

2012: Abloh founds Pyrex Vision

Image: 4Columns

After completing an internship with Italian luxury house Fendi and working as rapper/cultural heavyweight Kanye West’s creative right-hand man, Abloh founded his first clothing brand, Pyrex Vision, in 2012. Graphic-heavy and influenced by street culture, Pyrex Vision was the public’s first introduction to Abloh’s iconic signature aesthetic.

RELATED: Kanye West’s Million-Dollar Sneaker Auction A Turning Point For Modern Luxury

Notoriously, Abloh (allegedly) purchased deadstock Ralph Lauren flannels for $40 each, screen printed them with ‘Pyrex 23’ and sold them for $550 each. True or not, it’s a moment that speaks to Abloh’s uncanny understanding of modern fashion, ‘hype’ culture and streetwear.

Abloh told Complex back in 2013 that Pyrex Vision was “a representation of the importance of youth culture. The now. It’s basically my manifesto on my upbringing. Putting my idea in a unique way so that kids can participate. I just wanna start a brand that inspires and is geared towards youth. The internet generation, these kids that you see here today. It is all for them.”

2013: Off-White makes its debut

Image: The New York Times

In 2013, Abloh rebranded Pyrex Vision as Off-White, which is now one of the most in-demand brands on the planet. A cultural tour de force, Off-White is treated with the same sort of reverence as names like Supreme, Gucci, BAPE, Prada, Rolex or Louis Vuitton (who Abloh would eventually end up at). It’s an inextricable part of the modern fashion pantheon.

RELATED: Unfortunate Reason The ‘Ugliest Watch Ever Made’ Will Sell Like Hotcakes

Blurring the lines between luxury fashion and streetwear, Off-White’s signature use of Helvetica font, stylised quotation marks, zip ties and barricade tape has spawned countless imitators. There are now Off-White boutiques across the globe and in the world’s most famous department stores, from Selfridges to Sydney.

A crucial part of Off-White’s success has been Abloh’s collaborative spirit, with the label having penned dozens of high-profile collaborations with big-name brands and fellow designers such as Rimowa, IKEA, Moncler, Champion, Byredo and Nike, just to name a few. On that note…

2017: Nike ‘The Ten’ collaboration

Image: Nike

In 2017, Abloh kicked off his most successful and recognisable collaboration: that between Off-White and sportswear giant Nike. The result was ‘The Ten’, a reimagining of ten of the most iconic sneakers of the 20th century.

Deconstructed and visually distinct, ‘The Ten’ was immediately successful, with shoes selling out immediately… And resold for more than ten times the original price, in some cases. It was the epitome of hype culture: ‘The Ten’ catapulted Abloh into the public consciousness and sparked a renewed interest in limited-edition sneakers.

The collaboration between Nike and Abloh quickly moved beyond those ten sneakers, with Abloh adding activewear, additional sneaker models and a variety of different colourways to the mix over the years. While Abloh would go on to produce his own Off-White sneakers (as well as revisit sportswear during his time at Louis Vuitton), ‘The Ten’ remains his best-known work and perhaps the most iconic sneaker capsule of all time.

In 2018, Abloh became the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line – the first person of African descent to lead the brand’s menswear line, as well as one of the few Black designers at the helm of a major French fashion house.

While his tenure at the Maison has many high points to choose from – such as the brand penning its first athlete endorsement in skateboarder Lucien Clarke or the multimedia blitz that was his Zoooom with Friends AR concept – Abloh’s first show for LV, a sumptuous affair at the Palais-Royal gardens in Paris, stands out as a particular triumph and is easily one of the most iconic fashion shows of the last decade, if not the 21st century.

Star-studded both on and off the runway, it was a potent celebration of Black excellence and a changing of the guard in haute couture. Abloh’s close connections to the music world were a crucial part of the show: not only did rappers like Kid Cudi, Playboi Carti and A$AP Nast walk the runway as models, but BADBADNOTGOOD performed live, playing Kanye covers. The event cemented Abloh’s status as one of the most dynamic creatives on the planet.

2020: Mercedes-Benz collaboration

2020 saw Abloh collaborate with renowned German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz on ‘Project Geländewagen’: a unique art/concept car based on the marque’s famous G-Series SUV, also known as the G-Wagen. True to form, Abloh applied his signature deconstructed aesthetic to the boxy 4×4, turning it into a sort of weathered race car.

At the time, it was a rather controversial collaboration. Esquire Middle East called it “a hot mess”, and HYPEBEAST posed the pointed rhetorical question: “who is it for?” But as Ted Gushue, founder of Type7, adroitly put it at the time, “what it is ‘for’ is to act as a Trojan horse to get an entire generation of kids who live in cities who never ever ever think about cars or car design interested and engaged.” In that sense, it was genius.

While all these moments (and many more) are special, Abloh’s G-Wagen really epitomises the man’s influence and character. Regardless of what people thought about his artistic process, Abloh always knew how to spark a conversation. He had a unique and singular vision that few other designers before or perhaps since have ever had.

We’d say his 17-year-old self would be very proud.

Viacoin Is Going Absolutely Bananas. But Is It A Good Investment?
Viacoin Is Going Absolutely Bananas. But Is It A Good Investment?

Viacoin is blowing up right now. Hard. At the time of writing, Viacoin is CoinSpot’s #1 gainer, and has risen 52% in the last 24 hours alone.

As we discovered the hard way, however, in a recent cryptocurrency experiment, picking cryptos simply because they are gainers on any given day is a recipe for disaster.

So is it too late to buy or invest in Viacoin? Does the project have legs? Or is it a scam? A random pump? More: simply: what on earth is it?

Viacoin’s stated goal is: “secure micropayments perfected.” Its biggest selling point is its speed. Viacoin transactions are confirmed every 24 seconds – much quicker than other popular cryptocurrencies like Litecoin (2.5 minutes) and Bitcoin (10 minutes).

Viacoin is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that was built in 2014 by a Bitcoin Core developer, and it is mined using merged a merged mining technique, which allows Scrypt miners to mine viacoins for free, it is claimed.

It has exploded in price before (see: Motherboard’s 2018 article: “Hackers Jacked Up The Value Of An Obscure Cryptocurrency By Trading Other People’s Money“) causing many people to express first their amazement, then their devastation, on Twitter, as it emerged that Binance accounts accessed using stolen credentials were (most likely) the source of the pump (and dump).

This has also led people to say its current price increase must also be “fishy.”

Viacoin also exploded in value in April this year, before once again falling (as you can see in the graphic above). So be wary of looking at past performance and thinking “well, there could be a whole lot more room to run,” because those previous gains were artificially inflated.

Check out the following Tweets, which show people’s reactions to previous pumps.

For those interested in ViaCoin’s history, “ViaCoin was developed in response to an update to the Bitcoin protocol that reduced the capacity of the OP-RETURN script from 80 bytes to 40 bytes,” Coindoo reports.

“ViaCoin was created to supplement this shortage and to address some of Bitcoin’s fundamental issues such as the network delays.”

It is said that mining rewards occur every six months.

Viacoin, Coindoo says, “has seen its fair share of innovations and changes over the past few years. However, there is still a lot of work to be done and, according to the official roadmap, the team recently finished working on finalizing all the details regarding the support for Trezor.”

“The next step involves work for the Lightning Network Daemon implementation in order to bring the Network Wallet to the masses.”

“Future plans include support for the VIA currency by the ATMs produced by General Bytes and various new exchange listings,” Coindoo adds.

Viacoin is not a super popular cryptocurrency, but you can buy it on most popular crypto exchanges, like Binance, Bittrex, Poloniex, Coinroom.

One Reddit thread posted 6 years ago is less than complimentary about Viacoin, with Redditor Bitcoinopoly claiming: “BTCdrak forked bitcoin and hired Peter Todd to insert some new, basically useless feature that was purely for marketing hype. ViaCoin was initially sold with a marketcap of $380,000 which is approximately how much BTCDrak made from the coin without including additional mining profits if he had any.”

“Then, like every other altcoin scam, the creator walked away holding a bag of fiat currency and laughing like a fool.”

Coindoo, for its park, reckons: “ViaCoin is an innovative project that has a lot of things going for it such as super-fast transactions, enhanced versatility, and security, plus a great team behind it.”

“Whether ViaCoin is a good investment opportunity, we can’t say. However, it might be worth investing in the coin now while prices are low. As the Lightning Network will inevitably become more mainstream, so will the coin’s popularity.”

Others very much disagree, still attributing its price jump as being “a random pump.”

The last time Viacoin’s Twitter page posted anything was August the 18th, when they tweeted: “Adding liquidity to the markets for better books on exchanges.”

Its Reddit community is also pretty quiet.

At the time of writing Viacoin is priced at US $0.3454, has a circulating supply of 23,174,754.61 and a market cap of US $8,004,924, according to CoinMarketCap.

It remains unknown what, exactly, is triggering the Viacoin price increase we’ve seen over the last 24 hours.
