High Level Dating Mistakes Smart Guys Make
High Level Dating Mistakes Smart Guys Make

You roll up in your Carrera, Persols askew, podcast bubbling and Ralph Lauren ‘popping’. You nab the last park, and stroll in, one minute to spare, feeling cocksure as a Mexican Matador.

You order an extra hot Macchiato and sidle up to your date. You chat, get to know each other, and even have a couple of mutual interests. Coffee! Books! Music! Surely this was destined to be.

Fast forward two weeks and your romance has stalled, you’re both talking to other people, and neither of you quite know how to end things.

But you’re smart. What the hell went wrong? This guide to ‘the dating mistakes smart dudes make’ should help you understand why.

Not initiating

Think your Porsche speaks louder than words? Think again. This is a pet annoyance, which a trending thread, posted nine days ago into Reddit’s r/dating community, called, “Stop expecting people to take hints! And don’t feel bad if you don’t pick up on them,” attests is a real pain in the hot pants.

“This is a major peeve in dating and relationships and life in general, but especially with someone you’ve just met/are getting to know. We are adults and would probably be much better off confronting things and just stating what we think is obvious (but may actually not be obvious to the other party). Most of us miss social cues at some point or another and the nerves and excitement of dating makes some of us completely blind.”

Killing chemistry

There are two reasons to postpone a date. 1. It’s a power move. 2. You can’t make it.

If it’s the first, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. Think of your fling like a clay pigeon. Not the suavest analogy but bear with us. From the moment you match, your possible ‘bed frame busting’ relationship is hurtling away.

The more time goes by, the less the chance you’ll get together, and the more things will start to feel stale.

Trying to rehabilitate a ‘bad girl’

Every women’s website ever has an article on ‘how to rehabilitate a bad boy’ (or why you shouldn’t do it). Well, the shoe’s on the other food now and let us turn to Glamour to understand why, “Knowing when to cut your losses and move on leaves you available and baggage-free when the right [person] comes along.”

The solution? Let them take you for a ride, enjoy every it, and keep your expectations in check.

Rejecting anyone who isn’t a carbon copy of you

Because if we all liked Trigonometry, cryptocurrencies and craft beer, the world would be one giant set of nails-on-a-chalkboard. Also, opposites make good teams, even if they don’t always attract.

Playing it too cool

While less sophisticated dudes fall prey to talking about their ex or wiping their mits on the table cloth, you are one sophisticated MF. You lounge in your seat and deliberating like a French Professor from the school of Fug Youse literature.

You also speak only in rhyme, and preface everything with a scoff, saying things like “it just comes down to a case by case basis.” Please reconsider this behaviour.

Running from red flags

Think you’ve got this whole thing figured? Guess what? Red flags build character. And if you’re hitting the apps with anything other than a Chris Hemsworth rig and James Corden personality, you’re going to need it.

Having breakfast phobia

Just a heads up: having breakfast together doesn’t mean you’re getting married. And a French Press is the key to anyone’s heart.

Sydney Snubbed As The Best City To Visit In Australia
Sydney Snubbed As The Best City To Visit In Australia

Think Sydney, with its combination of world-famous Bondi Beach and bustling (now lockout-law-free) nightlife, is the best place in Australia to visit? Think again. How about Melbourne and its much-loved laneways and street art? Yeah, right.

No, in fact, the best town to visit in Australia is the home of the ‘Big Banana’, Coffs Harbour. The town, on the mid-north coast of NSW, was crowned ‘Aussie Town of the Year’ by online travel site Wotif. The awards, now in their third year, recognise towns throughout Australia that deliver the goods when it comes to affordability, tourist accommodation and traveller interest.

With Coffs Harbour being home to one of the most photogenic giant fruits in the land, not to mention a must-stop destination on popular tourist drive between Brisbane, Byron Bay and Sydney, it’s no wonder it came top of the list.

Despite the bushfire crisis that affected several regional areas of the country, Coffs Harbour has managed, in the eyes of Wotif, to provide the best all-round experience for tourists. The travel site also found that Aussies are starting to gravitate towards domestic travel, with 41 percent promising to explore their own country in the year ahead.

Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said of the win, “Size matters, and when it comes to hospitality, scenery and community, there’s nowhere bigger than the home of the Big Banana. We hope that it ‘apeels’ to many and encourages Aussies to get travelling to this coastal gem!”

And as for the awards themselves, Finch added, “During what is an incredibly tough time for many parts of the country, this year’s awards are more relevant than ever, as a way of recognising the hardworking tourism operators and local businesses who make up Australian tourism – the driving force behind many regional communities.”

He also urged Aussies to holiday in their own backyard, instead of jetting off overseas (and avoiding the cliche destinations in the process),

“Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a week-long escape, 2020 is the year to discover your own backyard and book a getaway that gives back.”

The Queensland towns of Mackay and Airlie Beach rounded out the top three, while Batemans Bay in NSW took fourth place. You can view the full top 10 list here.

Johnny Depp Knows The Sartorial Secret To Always Looking Slick
Johnny Depp Knows The Sartorial Secret To Always Looking Slick

How does a man change his reputation? Hire a stylist? Buy a Defender? Pretend to understand Sartre? Spray himself with only Steve McQueen approved cologne? Johnny Depp knows there’s another way.

The Hollywood icon recently stepped out at the screening of the movie ‘Minamata’ during the 70th Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, wearing a suit, a beige bowler hat and Moscot frames.

Depp wore the iconic Moscot Lemtosh frame in high-gloss black Italian acetate with custom blue tint lenses – eyewear that will set you back $460, if you’re in the market.

In doing so, he revealed his secret to always looking extra put together: frames.

Depp has previously put this sartorial trick to display in such roles as Fear & Loathing and The Rum Diaries (and Pirates of the Caribbean, if you count an eyeglass).

The look is also a great fit for Depp’s current role in the Andrew Levitas directed drama Minimata, in which he plays a war photographer.

Depp is also in the running to “play a campy joker” in the upcoming Batman movie, numerous sources have reported in the last 48 hours, so stay tuned for that too.

Dating Rules Men Need To Know Before Visiting Iceland
Dating Rules Men Need To Know Before Visiting Iceland

Men with brutal haircuts. Women with flowing locks. Wild rivers. Waterfalls. Whether you’ve been binge-watching Vikings, or you’ve heard about Iceland’s liberal casual sex culture, it’s hard not to approach the land of Fire & Ice without your brain bouncing with stereotypes. But before you wiggle into Iceland’s hook up scene, there are a few rules you need to know, to avoid embarrassment, or inadvertently insulting anyone. Whether you’re an Australian flitting in and out of the Schengen zone, a photographer on the trip of a lifetime, a surfer with ice for brains or a fjord-eyed backpacker, here’s everything you need to know before hooking up in Iceland.

Don’t try and be a pick-up artist

Iceland may have liberal hook up scene, but that doesn’t give you licence to be arrogant. To the contrary – Iceland being ahead of the times (many petitioned to ban pick up artist Julien Blanc from entering the country in 2014) – anyone with a sexist attitude tends to be shunned. Hopefully, you don’t regurgitate dodgy pick-up lines you learnt from a bald dude on Youtube even in your home country. But if not, now’s the time to stop.

Don’t be pushy

One of the numerous advantages of visiting a more progressive country is that, as a man, the pressure is no longer just on you to initiate. As Guide To Iceland puts it: “Be equal, be friendly, make them laugh and don’t try to push anything.”

“The need to be independent is somehow deeply encrypted into the Icelandic women’s psyche and persona. Maybe it is formed the Viking Age or maybe it is from the time that their men were all out at sea and they needed to take control, but no matter the reason it is still, today, very present.”

Don’t talk about drugs

While Brits judge Icelandic people for f*cking, Icelanders judge Brits for getting f*cked. As Guide To Iceland points out, “While for Icelanders it’s normal to talk about your sex-life, in the UK, people will think you are promiscuous.”

“And as it’s normal for Brits to talk about drug-use, in Iceland, people will think you are a drug addict and in serious trouble.”

Don’t interview your date

Swedish dating coach Linnea Molander recently told us the interview style dating you often see in Australia, Britain and America is considered “f***ing boring” in Scandinavia.

“You can’t make a friend by asking the same boring questions, or treating the date like a business meeting. You need to be able to create some emotional, flirty and sexual tension.”

So focus on just having fun, talk about what interests you (and them), and forget about the questions you’re ‘supposed’ to ask.

Don’t sneer at dating apps

In Australia and America there seems to be a bizarre double standard whereby no-one admits to using dating apps, but everyone is on them (“we met at a friend of a friend’s art show”). In Iceland, people are a lot more open about sex, and wanting it. So for any visitors, either get on the apps yourself or if you don’t, don’t mock them in front of a date who is probably using several themselves.

Be chill

Introvert paradise, Iceland is a place where you need to go with the flow. As All About Iceland puts it, “Dating a woman from Iceland is often very laid back. You might have found each other at a bar, on Tinder, Instagram or sent her a message on any social media platform out there and started chatting. Don’t start by sending her a love poem or by being too aggressive.”

“Icelandic women are much more into getting to know someone on a more friendly basis and then deciding if it’s worth meeting up. Chill dates like grabbing a coffee, going for some jazz, sitting down with a beer and deck of cards or having ice cream work perfectly.”

Don’t assume you need to get out and explore the country

Many tourists think they need to take their date on an outdoor adventure. But the truth is, when it comes to casual hook ups, Iceland’s dating culture is much the same as any large metropolitan city. Save the picnic for when you think you could be starting a relationship.

Remember the law of Lagom

Dating coach Linnea also told us about the Law of Lagom, which means “just the right amount”, “in moderation” and “stay in your lane.” She says “there is some sense of shame in wanting to be more or less than someone else.” So make sure you treat your date as an equal, as well as others around you during your time together. Don’t speak down to your waiter, for example.
