This $500,000 Race Car Is A Piece Of Australian Motoring History – And It’s For Sale

Brabham is a name synonymous with Australian motorsports success, from the exploits of the man himself to the team and cars that carried his name – it’s an Aussie legend.

Sir Jack Brabham was Australia’s first and greatest Formula 1 driver of all time. He remains (and will probably always remain) the first and only driver to win the world championship driving one of his own cars. He’d then go on to establish his own Formula 1 team, which won four Drivers’ and two Constructors’ World Championships in its 30-year history.

In the 1960s, Brabham was also the world’s largest manufacturer of open-wheel racing cars for sale to customer teams – these Aussie-designed cars winning races across the planet. But this one, currently for sale in Sydney, is a little more special than your ‘average’ Brabham race car.

As the seller Lorbek Luxury Cars explains, this 1965 Brabham BT16 was raced by two-time Formula 1 World Champion Graham Hill in Formula 2, then made its way Down Under where Aussie touring car champ Frank Gardner won the 1967 Horden Trophy with it, among other successes.

In 1992 it was fully restored, and it recently raced against three-time F1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart at the recent Race Against Dementia charity event, after which ‘The Flying Scot’ signed the rare car. It’s already one of only 12 ever made, but the association with these racing legends makes it even more exceptional.

It’s powered by a 1.6L Coventry Climax BRM F2 engine – which sounds like not much, but when you consider it weighs less than 500kgs, that’s more than plenty. It might be old but it’s still a pretty fast machine.

A close-up of Jackie Stewart’s signature on the car.

Designed by Jack Brabham, raced by Graham Hill and Frank Gardner, and signed by Jackie Stewart – can you get any cooler?

Yes, they’re asking a lot for it: $499,850. But can you really put a price on a piece of motoring history like this? Check it out at Lorbek’s online showroom here.

John Cleese Quote Sums Up Why Travel Is So Important
John Cleese Quote Sums Up Why Travel Is So Important

A Tweet posted by veteran actor John Cleese highlights why travelling can make you grow as a person; however, some didn’t entirely agree with his sentiment…

The renowned English actor and comedian John Cleese is best known for the Monty Python films, Fawlty Towers, A Fish Called Wanda – you know, acting. But who could’ve known that the Oscar-nominee could also offer up some solid advice in regards to travel?

The eighty-two-year-old took to Twitter to proclaim:

Many agreed with Cleese’s Tweet. One user commented, “True. Travel is the most educational thing I’ve ever done,” while another wrote, “Have to agree. Travel opens minds and opens the heart.” Twitter user @SrRochardBunson replied:

“It’s absolutely true, and I wouldn’t be the person that I am today if it weren’t for travelling.

Twitter user @SrRochardBunson

Mark Twain’s famous quote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime,” was brought up repeatedly as many noticed the similar meaning behind both Cleese’s and Twain’s words.

RELATED: Vacations Are Not For Relaxing, It’s Just A Fantasy

However, not everyone thought Cleese’s travel advice was helpful or inspirational. Many thought Cleese was being elitist with this particular Tweet, as not everyone has the means to travel.

One Twitter user wrote, “Nice way to put down those of us who for various reasons have never had that opportunity and like myself never will. Clearly, travel is not guaranteed to open your mind as much as you think it does,” while another argued, “People don’t need to travel to be educated about the way of life in other countries.”

User @ChiveTalking wrote, “That’s because they can’t afford to travel and are clinging on to what they know John,” while user @nayright12 simply put:

“Snob tweet of the week.”

Twitter user @nayright12

Of course, having been in the spotlight for such a long time, these Tweets probably didn’t bother Cleese at all. After all, he did famously say in the 2001 film Rat Race, “I can do anything I want, I’m eccentric!”

A-Listers Throw Their Support Behind Johnny Depp, Including One Famous Australian

Now that the defamation trial of the century is over, celebrities are flocking to support Johnny Depp’s victory on Instagram.

By now, you would’ve definitely heard the verdict of the infamous Johnny Depp & Amber Heard defamation trial. Depp ultimately won – all elements of his claim were found in favour by the jury – and was awarded US$15 million ($10 million in compensatory damages and US$5 million in punitive damages).

Heard, on the other hand, was only successful with one of her counterclaims and was awarded US$2 million in compensatory damages.

Both Depp and Heard took to Instagram once the verdict was read to make statements. Depp was thankful to the jury and wrote, “… the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled,” while Heard expressed her loss was a setback for women:

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words… I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”

Amber Heard

Prior to the trial and even while the trial was ongoing, many celebrities were rather quiet about their thoughts on the case. However, these recent Instagram posts from both Depp and Heard have allowed us to see which side many celebrities have now taken.

Notable celebs who liked Depp’s Instagram post discussing his defamatory case’s victory include Jennifer Aniston, Ryan Adams, Bella Hadid, Halle Berry, Naomi Campbell, Zoe Saldaña, Henry Golding, Taika Waititi, Cody Simpson, Norman Reedus, Juliette Lewis, Jason Priestly and Patti Smith – just to name a few.

Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo – whose time at McLaren is apparently “over” – has also liked Depp’s post.

In stark comparison, Heard’s post has only had four notable celebrities like it: Selma Blair, Sarah Steele, Kate Nash and, Heard’s Aquaman 2 co-star, Jason Momoa. What’s interesting about Momoa though is that he also liked Depp’s post – perhaps that’s his way of not taking sides?

Ultimately, it’s clear just by looking at these two posts who the vast majority of A-Listers support: Mr Johnny Depp.

Celebrity Real Estate Agent Shows Sydney’s Property Market Is Still On Fire
Celebrity Real Estate Agent Shows Sydney’s Property Market Is Still On Fire

With interest rates on the rise in Australia for the first time in a very long time, you’d assume the property market would cool down a little… But that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least for some suburbs and real estate agents.

Gavin Rubinstein, top Sydney real estate agent, founder of The Rubinstein Group at Ray White and star of Amazon Prime Video’s Luxe Listings Sydney, took to social media earlier today to reflect on how despite interest rate rises and a change in the federal government, he’s had a killer May.

In just 31 days Rubinstein sold 10 properties in Sydney’s exclusive Eastern Suburbs worth a collective $83.4 million. That’s a lot of dinero, baby.

It looks like that momentum isn’t slowing down, either: just yesterday on June 2nd, Rubinstein sold yet another property in Vaucluse for over $4 million.

These big wins come at the same time that the broader Sydney property market is facing the first real price downturn in years. Sydney house prices have dropped by 1% through May – the largest monthly decline since January 2019 – and a 10% or greater price decline is on its way, AFR reports.

Property prices across Australia are pretty exxy but Sydney in particular has a long way to fall. Why is such an extreme price slide being predicted? As The Sydney Morning Herald explains, changes to the cash rate have historically taken multiple months to have an effect, but the lag has narrowed significantly in May as very high prices and debt-to-income ratios have made the market more sensitive to interest rate changes.

Yet, as Rubinstein’s sales successes demonstrate, Sydney’s most exclusive suburbs are seeming to weather the storm.

It’s not just the Eastern Suburbs that are likely to remain hot though.

“Arguably, some regional markets will be somewhat insulated from a material downturn in housing values due to an ongoing imbalance between supply and demand as we continue to see advertised stock levels remain extraordinarily low across regional Australia,” CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless tells ABC News.

Other areas bucking the trend and experiencing price growth include Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, Brisbane’s Logan-Beaudesert region, Perth’s north-west suburbs and Hobart as a whole.

Vacations Are Not For Relaxing, It’s Just A Fantasy
Vacations Are Not For Relaxing, It’s Just A Fantasy

There’s a reason everyone loves a good holiday – no work and all play. Plus, money’s not really an issue because you’ve been saving it all up so you can splurge to your heart’s content whilst on your vacation.

Most would argue that because of these reasons, holidays are a great way to relax and unwind from the everyday stresses of life.

But one Twitter user seems to disagree and believes that we don’t actually relax on holidays – we just suspend ourselves from reality and live an “unstainable fantasy”.

Of course, people immediately chimed in. One Twitter user commented, “This was my husband and me before kids. It was nice to imagine different lives in different cities. We never succumbed to the fantasy. Alas.”

Another wrote, “Yes….fantasy world for a few days!”

RELATED: One Big Expectation Tourists Need To Leave Behind When Visiting Japan

However, a few Twitter users were baffled by the thought of going on holiday in places “equally expensive”.

“Confused about where you vacation/where you live if the city you’re vacationing to is equally as expensive as your own,” one person wrote, while another user – who clearly must live in Dublin – joked, “a city as expensive as Dublin? now there’s a fantasy x”.

Overall, the consensus was that most people do live out a bit of fantasy while on vacation instead of relaxing – there were a lot of “True” and “ATTACKED” replies in the comments.

Aside from one poor user who called vacations “an expensive parenting relocation program”.

That beach better make up for it, because honestly, that early wake-up time sounds like an awful holiday scenario…

Rare $2.6 Million Richard Mille Prototype Surfaces For Sale Online
Rare $2.6 Million Richard Mille Prototype Surfaces For Sale Online

Richard Mille watches are already some of the rarest and most expensive timepieces on the planet, but an unreleased prototype model that was worn at the Olympics? That’s particularly special.

A Richard Mille RM 038 prototype worn by Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake has just popped up for sale on Chrono24, the world’s leading watch market, for an eye-watering AU$2,629,956 (plus shipping). Blake, one of the fastest men on the planet, wore this exact watch during the 2012 London Olympic Games 100m final, where he nabbed silver.

The watch, which was first auctioned off during Only Watch 2013 and has since made the rounds among collectors, is really a piece of horological and sporting history. Crafted from magnesium and sporting the colours of the Jamaican flag, it’s the first-ever tourbillon watch worn during Olympic competition.

It’s also clearly race-worn. The case has scuff marks and the nylon strap has been stained by Blake’s sweat… But actually, that only adds to its value. It’s an exceptionally special piece – hence the sky-high price.

It’s unusual for top-flight athletes to wear watches when they compete, especially in sports at the bleeding edge of human performance like sprinting. Athletes wouldn’t want to weigh themselves down unnecessarily – every gram counts when you’re going fast.

Yet many athletes still wear their Richard Milles when they compete, because they’re so light. Case in point: Yohan Blake’s RM 038 only weighs around 44 grams. In comparison, a steel Rolex Submariner weighs around 155 grams.

RELATED: Strange Richard Mille Coincidence Spotted In Formula 1

This prototype Richard Mille originally sold at Only Watches 2013 for €350,000 (~AU$517,956) – so it’s appreciated pretty aggressively. Yohan Blake might have ‘only’ won silver at London but clearly, his watch is solid gold…

Speaking of expensive watches, check out our guide to the most expensive watches of all time below.

The $160 Haircut Australian Men Can’t Get Enough Of
The $160 Haircut Australian Men Can’t Get Enough Of

It’s one of those things – as a man, you never really want to tell someone how much you paid for your haircut. Especially as an Aussie man.

Spend too much and your mates will call you a tosser, and invariably make a comment about how your head still looks rough despite how much money you spent. Alternatively, spend too little (and own up to it), and regardless of the outcome, you’ll sound like some sort of pleb. There’s no pride in getting too cheap of a haircut.

Indeed, after two years of COVID-induced lockdown – where we missed rituals like our monthly haircut, and our heads suffered as a result – the market for high-end barbers has never been bigger.

At the start of 2021, I decided to go full Brad Pitt and get a buzz cut. Shave the whole thing off. I almost immediately regretted my decision (more on that here). After that, I decided to go the other way and not cut my hair at all; let it all grow out.

I did that for just over a year until I couldn’t take it any more. Frankly, I missed getting my hair cut, and wasn’t sure if the Hugh Grant look was right for me. Thankfully, the fine gents at Truefitt & Hill Sydney – arguably the nicest barber in Australia – offered me a cut. And when they go for $160 a pop, I wasn’t about to say no.

A bit nicer than Just Cuts. Image: Truefitt & Hill

Bit of background on Truefitt & Hill. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Truefitt & Hill is the world’s oldest barbershop, with its original location in London having first opened back in 1805. Today, Truefitt & Hill has locations around the world, including barbershops in Sydney and Canberra, and has gained a cult following for its luxurious grooming products, too.

After surviving two lean years during the pandemic, Truefitt & Hill Sydney is now doing a roaring trade. $160 a haircut might sound pretty exxy but Sydney blokes can’t seem to get enough of it.

RELATED: Foolproof Advice Every Man Needs To Avoid Getting A Bad Haircut

The Sydney barbershop is located on the 2nd floor of the city’s iconic Queen Victoria Building – a fittingly genteel spot for a luxurious British barber. As I waited for my appointment out the front of the store – sipping on a cup of English Breakfast – a steady stream of clients was pouring in and out, keen to pay top dollar for a top haircut.

When my turn finally came, my waistcoat-wearing barber first placed a warm, dry towel on my neck, got me comfortable, and then went to town on my rather shaggy head. And it’s simply the best haircut I’ve ever had.

As you can see, I desperately needed a haircut. Image: Jamie Weiss/DMARGE

The barber was like a surgeon with his scissors. After years of getting cheap mall haircuts – where you basically accept that you’re going to have to do some tidy-up yourself when you get home – I was astounded to find not a single follicle out of place. My head was a work of art.

Also, nothing beats sipping on Scotch whilst getting your haircut (and yes that’s built into the price, but when in Rome…) The best bit was the hair wash and scalp massage at the end. A proper scalp massage at the barber’s is the epitome of self-care. Nothing beats it. The scalp massage is worth the price of admission alone, quite frankly.

The barber also recommended and applied some Truefitt & Hill C.A.R Lotion, which is just the world’s best thing at managing curls and keeping your hair supple. It’s truly a magic brew.

All in all, the total experience was luxurious, effortless and stress-free. Really, it was a solid hour of bliss – and can you really put a price on that? Can’t recommend it enough.

Disney Plus Australia: Everything You Need To Know
Disney Plus Australia: Everything You Need To Know

These days there are a ton of streaming services available in Australia. Disney Plus (stylised as Disney+) is one of them; it’s also one of the best. If you’re thinking about subscribing to Disney Plus Australia, here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is Disney Plus?

Disney+ is a streaming platform that’s owned by Disney (duh). As Disney owns multiple film and television production companies – Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, 20th Century Animation, and Searchlight Pictures – Disney+ has a ton of excellent content.

As Disney owns Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, Disney+ has all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Star Wars films and television series on it. In fact, Disney+ is the only streaming service that gives you access to MCU and Star Wars content – including the critically acclaimed and popular shows Moon Knight, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Obviously, all Disney and Pixar films – like The Lion King and Toy Story – are on Disney+ but iconic films and shows like The Simpsons, How I Met Your Mother, Avatar, Kingsman: The Secret Service, etc. are also available on Disney+.

Disney Plus Australia Price

Disney makes it incredibly easy to sign up. Rather than provide multiple subscription tiers like some other streaming services, there is just one, but you have two options with regards to how you pay.

  • A monthly subscription allows you to pay for Disney+ on a monthly basis at $11.99 per month.
  • An annual subscription allows you to pay for 12 months of Disney+ in one hit for $119.99 per year. This gives you a saving of just under $24 compared to paying monthly.

Disney Plus Australia Free Trial

Unfortunately, Disney Plus doesn’t offer a free trial in Australia (or any other region, for that matter). So, if you want to find out if Disney Plus is the right streaming service for you, the cheapest way is to sign up for one month at the cost of $11.99, and cancel your subscription before the month is up.

You will still be able to access the entire catalogue of Disney Plus content all the way up until the month period you paid for comes to an end.

Disney Plus Features

Disney+ streams in 4K otherwise known as ultra-high definition. Of course, this means you’ll have to have a 4K Ultra HD device for whatever you choose to watch to be streamed in 4K. If you don’t have a device capable of 4K, that’s totally fine – Disney Plus will simply stream the highest quality your device can handle.

With one Disney+ account, you get up to seven different profiles; meaning seven different people can use the one Disney account. Although Disney Plus only allows up to four devices to stream simultaneously, so the seven of you can’t all use Disney+ at the same time.

Of course, some (or all) profiles can be set to a ‘kid’s profile’. A kid’s profile will only suggest content suitable for children – so there’s no risk your kid stumbles upon an R18+ Deadpool film – and will have a simplified user interface.

What devices can I use to watch Disney Plus?

You’ll be able to use Disney+ on a wide range of devices including:

  • Smart TVs
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Games consoles
  • PCs & Macs
  • Any other device that has an HDMI output or supports Apple Airplay wireless streaming
