Who is Victor Wembanyama?

Victor Wembanyama is a French basketball player who was born on 4 January 2004 in Le Chesnay, France. His mother played basketball and began coaching him from a very young age. However, Victor played football as a youngster too, in the position of goalkeeper and also enjoyed practising judo.
Basketball was where he showed real talent, however, and he joined his local basketball club, Entente Le Chesnay Versailles, before joining the youth development system of LBA Pro A basketball club, Nanterre 92, when he was 10 years old.
Victor received offers from bigger basketball clubs, including from FC Barcelona Bàscquet and ASVEL (a French professional club based in Lyon), but his parents declined them on his behalf. Victor was eventually loaned to FC Barcelona in 2018 to participate in an under-14 tournament.
Upon returning to France following his loan spell, Victor Wembanyama began playing for Espoirs Nanterre in the LNB Espoirs league, which is for under-21s, for the 2019-20 season.

Victor Wembanyama finished the 2021-22 season being named LNB Pro A Best Young Player for a second consecutive season. Wembanyama then suffered an injury which saw him miss the playoffs, and at the end of the season, Victor opted out of his contract.

Victor Wembanyama is widely regarded as being the No. 1 draft prospect for the 2023 NBA season. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has shared a photo of himself looking supremely ripped. The image is captioned: “different breed,” adding to the extensive database of photos in which he attempts to build his Chuck Norris like persona.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has posted a photo to Instagram. You might not think that’s a big deal, but when you have a cult like following like the Swedish superstar does, it’s The News Of The Day. So: what’s the photo? It’s a shirtless picture, likely taken mid or post-workout, where The Lion can be seen wearing black shorts, black Puma socks and grey Nikes (with a sports field behind him).
The image inspired such comments (from fans and followers) as: “IBRA IZ BACK,” “Animale” and “Beast mode.”
Other one-liners included: “lions don’t compare themselves to humans” and “the boss.” This isn’t the first time a photo (or feat) of Zlatan has threatened to make the Internet lose its collective mind. Earlier this year, Zlatan revealed he helped AC Milan on their title run with no ACL in his left knee, for instance, while in February he showed us the secret to his superhuman reputation.
Love him or hate him, it’s quite remarkable for someone with such a big ego to be so well loved. So he must be doing something right.

Zlatan has previously spoken about his ego – even shown a little humility in the process. He said Mohammad Ali is one of his role models, explaining, “He was talking, but what he said he did. He had a big mouth, but he demonstrated also in the ring” [sic].
“He believed in his [principles] and he never gave them up.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan also admits he isn’t in the same league as his boxing idol. In a 2011 interview, he said: “I know the way I am, by my mentality, of course, I believe in myself. Where I come from, it is important to believe in yourself.”
“Arrogance comes by itself, you don’t choose to be it, you either are a leader or you’re not.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
“I think what is important, for me on the football field, if I do nothing there, then everybody will look like a clown, walking around trying to be something you’re not. If you demonstrate it on the field, then it’s the perfect match.” [sic].
In other words: put your money where your mouth is.

A travel blogger has shown that Thailand’s Maya Bay isn’t as picturesque as influencers would have us believe…
Influencers always seem to get perfect pictures whenever they go on holiday. And to be candid, those perfect pictures always make us want to go to said destination and recreate the images ourselves.
But there’s a secret talent influencers possess that we mere mortals don’t – angles. How many times have you seen a stunning destination on Instagram but then you get there and it’s impossible to get a nice picture without thousands of other people trying to do the same in the background? We’re betting countless.
Speaking of which: one popular ‘it’ destination, Maya Bay – located in Thailand and best known for being where the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach was filmed – is no different. A travel photographer, simply known as his Instagram handle ‘worldpitou’, has recently posted a video that highlights that since Maya Bay has reopened post-COVID, it’s as crowded as ever.
WATCH: Be prepared for crowded beaches if you head to Maya Bay
His footage initially shows clear blue skies, crystal clear water and luscious green rock formations. But then it cuts to the beach which is filled with hundreds of people enjoying the beach. Worldpitou has labelled the footage as ‘Instagram vs Reality.’
The travel photographer also captioned his footage with, “After 3 years of closing, Maya Bay has reopened. Okay, boats are not allowed to stop at the beach [and] you’re not allowed to swim but there are still hundreds of boats on the other side of the island and thousands of people visiting the beach. Do you think these restrictions are enough? I don’t.”
It’s unclear why worldpitou is uncomfortable with Maya Bay easing its mass tourism restrictions. It’s either because he’s concerned crowds will ruin the delicate ecosystem or because crowds make it harder to get that perfect shot. We’re guessing the first reason is worldpitou’s issue with Maya Bay’s reopening.
Sadly, there’s no easy solution to protect Maya Bay’s ecosystem from too many visitors. But if all you’re concerned about is your grid, there is an easy way to avoid huge crowds, allowing for better Instagram-worthy pictures and videos – opt for a cool but lesser-known destination.

There are car accidents, and then there’s total car destruction… And this poor Range Rover was definitely the victim of the latter.
A delivery of brand-new Range Rover Vogues in New Jersey earlier this year ended in tragedy after one of the pricey US$250,000+ luxury SUVs came loose from its car transporter, causing a multi-car accident and several thousands of dollars in damage.
While no news sources have come out and said it, we reckon the transporter tried to go under a bridge that was too low – decapitating the topmost Range Rover, causing it to tumble from the transporter. How else could it have happened? The car then smashed into a Honda Accord (totalling it in the process) before coming to a rest in the middle of the highway.
At a time when vehicle delivery times around the globe have never been longer, we really feel for the devastated owner who had to receive the unfortunate phone call that their car was destroyed before even making it to the dealer’s lot.
WATCH: check out the ‘decapitated’ Range Rover in the video below
“Could you imagine how devastated you would be seeing your new Vogue looking like this after it falling off the transporter truck and having waited 2 years for it?” Ian Davies, Director of Prestige Connex says.
“If it were me, devastated would be an understatement – to put it mildly!”
What makes the situation even more unfortunate was that the transporter it came off of was carrying five identical Range Rovers in the same exact colour, seemingly with the same exact specifications – none of which were damaged. Road & Track speculates the transporter was likely on its way to Jaguar Land Rover’s headquarters, just up the road in Mahwah, New Jersey.
We would have liked to be in the room when the transporter driver had to explain this one…

Russia has a rebranded version of McDonald’s (Vkusno i Tochka, which means “tasty and that’s it”). DMARGE has obtained photos that show what it looks like inside. It’s eerily similar, but also different.
Photos from inside a rebranded Russian Maccas, obtained by DMARGE, show the new version of the Western fast food chain, which suspended operations in Russia following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, doesn’t look quite the same as the original.
In the first photo we have obtained (the image to the left in the graphic below), you can see the burger box no longer rocks the McDonald’s colour or logo). The drink cup is a little more threadbare, too, with less of the typical McDonald’s graphics.

Outside McDonald’s, too, the car park looks quite different to a typical Maccas car park. There are no Golden Arches, for instance. Inside the restaurant, the same logo-lacking difference can be seen. Take, for instance, the brown paper bags – there is no branding on them whatsoever (weirdly, not even the new store’s own brand).

When you open the bag and box, things look barer still. Not that we haven’t ever had a bad Maccas burger in our time, but when you see the Coleslaw-looking stuff on the bun to the right and the fish finger-looking thing beneath it (as well as the rather sad looking lettuce on the burger to the left), we’d say this new Russian iteration of Maccas is quite grim too (perhaps grimmer, even, than the creepy clown capitalist version we have here in Australia).
As for the taste, we haven’t had the pleasure of wrapping our mouths around one of these bad boys, but we’ve heard it’s underwhelming. According to a journalist at Insider: “The first bite of the cheeseburger wasn’t as exciting as it used to be – and the fries seem sadder.”

“The bun and cheese are clearly identical to the original version – McDonald’s was using 85% locally produced ingredients – but the meat patty seems slightly less salty, making that first bite a little less exciting. I also noticed the absence of the pickle slice, which I liked.”
Insider
Insider also reported that the menu is largely the same, however Happy Meals, the Big Mac and the McFlurry are now gone from the menu. DMARGE also has been told by a source in Russia that the potatoes are no longer imported.
Food for thought.

Steph Curry has already established himself as one of the NBA’s biggest watch aficionados – and his latest piece of wrist candy only reinforces his horological bona fides.
The Golden State Warriors star, who led his team to victory in this year’s NBA Finals, has amazing taste in watches – which is saying something, considering how many well-heeled watch guys there are in basketball’s top league.
He’s mostly known for rocking Cartiers, but his latest piece is something a bit different: a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph (ref. 5500V/110A-B481) he wore while hosting the 2022 ESPY Awards earlier this week.
While the Overseas is a familiar name to most seasoned watch fans, it’s a watch that surprisingly few celebrities are seen wearing – with other male celebs opting for luxury sports watches from Vacheron’s biggest rivals, like Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak or Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and Aquanaut.
It’s a shame because we reckon the Overseas is an arguably more interesting watch, precisely because it’s not such an overbearing pop culture icon. It’s less gauche; a piece for real connoisseurs. It’s official: Stephen Curry is a watch nerd.

The rendition of this versatile luxury sports watch Curry has opted for features a column-wheel chronograph with silvered counters that contrast its black dial in a rather elegant fashion. Water resistant to 150m and boasting a 52-hour power reserve, the Overseas Chronograph is a capable yet demure watch that’s perfect for a jet-setter like Chef Curry.
These days, interchangeable strap systems are commonplace, but Vacheron was a real innovator in this field and the Overseas was one of the first watches to feature a quick-change strap system. Three straps are available for the Overseas: leather, rubber and steel, the latter of which features a clever motif that calls to mind Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese cross logo.

Curry didn’t just host the ESPYs, he also won the award for Best Record-Setting Performance, for breaking Ray Allen’s long-standing record for most career 3-pointers made during this past NBA season.
Curry accepted the award in a truly magnanimous fashion, though. “All records are meant to be broken and I know there’s a lot of young kids out there that are working hard… I can’t wait to be in the arena when y’all break this record,” he said as he accepted his award. What a king.

The original John Wick script described the character as a 75-year-old man, so Keanu Reeves was not one of the actors the John Wick filmmakers first thought of…
Thinking about anyone other than Keanu Reeves playing the iconic character John Wick (in the franchise of the same name and who will return for the fourth time in John Wick: Chapter 4) just feels wrong; no one could’ve played John Wick better than Reeves.
And yet, when the first John Wick movie was in the early stages of development, Reeves was not one of the actors the filmmakers were initially considering.
A new book, called They Shouldn’t Have Killed His Dog: The Complete Uncensored Oral History of John Wick, Gun Fu, and the New Age of Action, has just been released and reveals that the John Wick character originally was a 75-year-old man who had retired from assassin work 25 years earlier.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the book features written accounts from various people involved with the John Wick franchise, and producer Basil Iwanyk said that after reading the John Wick script (which was originally titled Scorn) only two actors sprung to mind.

“I thought, ‘Okay, there’s probably one or two names you could do this with: Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford. Other than that, I’m not sure how I put this movie together.’”.
Basil Iwanyk, John Wick producer
However, when Reeves was alerted to John Wick by his agent, who asked Iwanyk to give Reeves the script, the Matrix actor became interested and soon became the obvious (and only) choice for the role.
“My other best friend in the world, this guy Jimmy Darmody, is an agent at CAA, who at the time represented Keanu. And he said, ‘Do you have any action movies for Keanu Reeves?’… We give [Reeves] the script, we tell him, ‘Clearly, you’re not 75.’”
Basil Iwanyk, John Wick producer

Reeves was instantly drawn to the project despite being much younger than 75 so he met with John Wick’s scriptwriter, Derek Kolstad. Kolstad recalls in the book that the first time he met Reeves, Reeves demanded the John Wick character be changed from a 75-year-old to a younger man, so he could play him.
“When I first went and met with [Reeves] and walked into his house, and as he rounded the corner to say hello to me – it’s a nice house, it’s not ostentatious for a guy who’s worth, I dunno, billions… The first thing that Keanu said to me was, ‘Okay, Derek, I’m going to play him 35.’ And I’m like, ‘Fine.’”
Derek Kolstad, John Wick screenwriter
No disrespect to Eastwood or Ford but we should all thank our lucky stars that the script was changed and that Reeves was eventually cast as John Wick.
There’s no way it would’ve become the successful franchise it did without him; seriously, who else, other than Keanu Reeves, could say, “You stole my car, and you killed my dog!” in Russian with such dynamism and emotion? No one, that’s who.

No one is born rich. Okay, some people are, but for the rest of us spending an obscene amount of money on a watch is simply out of the question. However, a quality watch is a must-have for the modern man; especially one that has reasonable water resistance; a decent quartz movement or automatic movement; and a genuine polished stainless steel or leather strap as opposed to some fabric number.
If you’re willing to part with a little of your hard-earned cash you can easily get a high-quality watch with all these features; a watch with distinct character and sophistication. We’re talking about that magic $500 – $1,000 mark, which when considering that you’ll most likely wear your new watch every day for years to come, the cost per wear works out to be the same as a cup of coffee.
These are the best watches under $1,000. If you’re looking to save even more money, check out our best watches under $500 guide, too.
In this best watches under $1,000 article…
Seiko 5 GMT

Let’s kick things off with the new Seiko 5 GMT. You couldn’t have a list without high-quality affordable watches without including Seiko, and the Seiko 5 range is of particularly outstanding value. The ‘5’ is in reference to the five base qualities Seiko demands from Seiko 5 watches: automatic winding, a day-date display, high water resistance, a protected or recessed crown, and a durable case and bracelet.
The 5 range encompasses a wide variety of different watches including field, dress and dive watches. The Seiko 5 GMT is modelled after the latter, but it’s something new for the Seiko 5 line: it’s a GMT watch. That means it can tell the time in multiple time zones thanks to its additional hour hand and bidirectional bezel.
It also boasts an automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, is water-resistant to 100m and comes on a ‘Jubilee’-style metal bracelet as standard. In short, it’s a hell of a lot of watch for the money.
Retail Price: AU$875
Hamilton Khaki Field

Easily Hamilton’s most iconic timepiece, the Khaki Field is the go-to field watch for any watch aficionado. Rugged, utilitarian and versatile, the Khaki Field is available in a wide variety of sizes, dial finishes and either quartz or mechanical movements – we’ve opted for the latter as it’s more ‘authentic’ for a field watch and a more premium choice.
Its sandblasted stainless steel case houses a manual-winding movement with a ‘weekend proof’ 80-hour power reserve and comes mounted on a hardy textile NATO strap. You can also get this one on a steel bracelet.
Hamilton is a great brand that makes many quality timepieces at this sub-$1,000 price point, but we think this white dial field watch is the cream of the crop. Pun entirely intended.
Retail Price: AU$950
Casio G-Shock ‘CasiOak’

Casio is synonymous with affordable, high-quality watches, so it’s hard to pick just one Casio for this list. G-Shock is Casio’s high-performance line and G-Shocks are some of the toughest watches on the planet. Water, shock and dust-resistant, they’re the final word in durability and affordability.
There are heaps of different G-Shocks, but the ‘CasiOak’ is hard to look past. A favourite of collectors and the style-conscious, it’s called the CasiOak as its octagonal case resembles that of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, one of the most famous luxury sports watches on the planet… But where a Royal Oak will set you back at least $50,000, you can pick a CasiOak up for only a few hundred dollars.
Not only does it look good, but it’s packed with features, including chronograph, alarm and world time functions; a powerful backlight and dual analogue/digital display, plus it’s incredibly tough, shock-resistant and water-resistant to 200m.
Retail Price: AU$279
Tissot PRX

Continuing on the theme of watches that look far more expensive than they are, the Tissot PRX is another fan favourite that offers a lot of bang for your buck. Why? It’s the cheapest entry point into the integrated bracelet watch game.
Slim on the wrist and brimming with 70s charm, the PRX is a versatile piece that’s perfect for both casual wear and more formal occasions. The satin-brushed case and bracelet are very classy, and it boasts 100m of water resistance.
Like many watches on this wrist, the Tissot PRX is available in a variety of dial colours, as well as with either quartz or automatic movements. The latter, however, come in above the $1,000 mark, as does the recently-released chronograph variant of this popular watch.
Retail Price: AU$550
Marathon Pilot’s Navigator

A Canadian-based watch company that manufactures its watches in Switzerland, Marathon has a long history of producing military and field watches – indeed, Marathon is the sole supplier of watches to the United States Armed Forces. They offer exceptional durability and value plus a rather unique aesthetic.
The Marathon Pilot’s Navigator (which, as the name suggests, was originally designed for US Air Force pilots) features a unique high-impact fibre shell case that is sweat and shock resistant, as well as lightweight. The case has a matte stealth finish to avoid unwanted reflections and the special asymmetrical shape ensures the matte grey steel crown is fully protected.
If the fibre shell case wasn’t unique enough, it also features tritium tubes instead of lume – something few modern watches offer. Tritium tubes are self-illuminating gas tubes, meaning they will not dull down in brightness like normal watch lume, which needs to be ‘charged’ by an external light source to glow.
Retail Price: AU$593
Timex M79 Automatic

Timex is another brand that’s synonymous with quality affordable watches. Inspired by the popular 1970s Q Timex, most watch aficionados are actually drawn to the M79 Automatic because has a colour scheme that resembles the much more expensive Rolex GMT-Master ‘Batman’… Although this isn’t a GMT watch.
Still, you’re getting plenty of watch with the M79. Unlike a ‘Batman’, it boasts a very 70s day-date window at 3 o’clock, as well as an appealing blue sunburst dial. A unidirectional dive-style bezel completes the look.
With its stainless steel case and highly comfy folding clasp bracelet, this Timex is a great entry point into the world of automatic stainless steel sports watches.
Retail Price: AU$572
Apple Watch Series 7

Is it cheating putting a smartwatch on this list? We don’t care. Horological purists might scoff at the Apple Watch but the fact remains that it is one of the most popular watches on the market thanks to its impressive collection of features, stylish form… And let’s be honest, the Apple brand.
It’s onto its seventh iteration now but that doesn’t mean the Apple Watch is running out of tricks in the bag. Not only does it have the biggest display yet (with over 50% more screen area than the Series 3) but it’s got a tougher, thicker crystal; 50m of water resistance; an amazing suite of health and fitness apps; as well as a wide variety of case finishes and strap options.
Prices for the Apple Watch Series 7 vary significantly depending on case size, strap option as well as whether you bundle in GPS and cellular capability, or just GPS. $800 will get you the larger case size, GPS + cellular and a basic rubber strap – i.e. maximum capability, minimum fuss.
Retail Price: AU$800
Junghans Max Bill Quartz

Rounding off this list is this stylish timepiece from Junghans, a highly underrated German watch brand that produces minimalist, high-quality watches at a rather affordable price.
The Max Bill is their most famous watch. Named after the Bauhaus-trained Swiss designer who produced the watch (as well as many of Junghans’ products throughout the 1950s), it’s a dressy yet exceptionally timeless piece.
This quartz model comes mounted on a Milanese strap (a fine metal mesh) which is extremely comfortable as well as aesthetically distinctive.
Retail Price: AU$910
Men’s Watches FAQs
How do I pick a men's watch?
Aesthetics, complications, quality and brand aside, the most important thing to consider when buying a new watch is that you choose one that's the right size. If you have a smaller wrist, go for timepieces with smaller diameters or thinner cases. Measure the circumference of your wrist. If it is between six to seven inches, choose a watch with a case diameter of 38-42 mm wide, for example.
How is a men's watch supposed to fit?
If your watch leaves imprints on your skin, it is too tight. Ideally, it should be loose enough to slide more than two inches down your wrist when your arm is perpendicular to the ground.
How many watches should a man own?
Most men only own one watch, but fashion experts say you should have three – an everyday watch, a workout watch, and a dress watch for special occasions.

He might be an animal on the court, but Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has recently explained why he’s plant-based off it.
Speaking to BBC Sport during Wimbledon in June, Nick Kyrgios was asked why he chooses to be vegan. He explained it isn’t for health reasons but more so for “the love of animals.”
“It’s not for health, because I don’t mind a pint of beer, so I’m actually just doing it for the love of animals,” he says.
“I love animals, and it’s so hard for me to eat them, I guess. I just don’t want to be doing that. I drive an electric car now,” – a retina-searing green Tesla, in case you were wondering – “I’m trying to do as much as I can for the environment.”

“You ask someone why do you eat meat, or why do you drive a petrol car, and it’s like, ‘oh it’s too late to do anything, it’s too late to save,’ and I’m just like ‘I’m just trying to be the change that I want to see.'”
“But yeah, that’s it. I love animals, and I love the world, I love the environment, so I’m doing everything I can to prolong its welfare.”
The video, predictably, generated a ton of divisive comments, from: “‘I’m trying to be the change that I want to see’ whilst gobbing spit at spectators” to “I love Kyrgios, his personality is literally all over the place, you got to love him.”
“Loves animals and his red leather Jordan’s” another quipped.
RELATED: King Kyrgios Breaks Wimbledon Dress Code With ‘Controversial’ Footwear
It’s clear the animal-based vs plant-based diet debate is one that has no obvious end in sight. When someone makes a personal decision to do what they feel is best for them (i.e. Kyrgios choosing to adopt a vegan diet), there will always be those who oppose that view because it isn’t confirmed ‘the norm’.
There are benefits to going vegan, and it has been claimed you can get ripped on a plant-based diet, but one piece of information that cannot be argued with, is that animal-based meat products contain far more nutrients than their plant-based counterpart.
Documentaries, such as Netflix’s Game Changers, hoped to prove that a plant-based diet can still be a good option for those wanting to pack on some serious muscle. But following its release, many nutrition and fitness experts called it out for bending the truth. For example, the documentary claimed that a peanut butter sandwich has as much protein as 3oz beef or three large eggs.
But, as Dr. Anthony Gustin, founder and CEO of Perfect Keto has said, that would only be true if you used 5 tablespoons of peanut butter. And, when you factor in how many calories you would be consuming to get the same amount of protein, you’re looking at around 500, and that’s before you take the bread into account.
So, while Nick Kyrgios may potentially have a tougher time achieving a match-fit rig, the fact he reached the Wimbledon final this year – playing 6 matches in all, having skipped his semi-final against Rafael Nadal – suggests he’s certainly doing something right.
