What could be better than a classic BMW 3 Series in immaculate condition? An Alpina-tuned version of said 3 Series, also in immaculate condition, and available to buy at a bargain price. And that’s exactly what you can get, with this 1982 Alpina C1, based on the BMW 3 Series 323i [E21], for sale on Carsales right now.The 323i was the last E21 generation 3 Series to be built (the E21 was a whole was the very first time we saw the 3 Series nomenclature) and was already regarded as the top-of-the-range model, thanks to a more powerful 2.3-litre six-cylinder engine and a new Bosch fuel-injection system. It gave way to the E30 generation which, let’s face it, is the one collectors really want. But then Alpina got its hands on it. Alpina is a German-based automaker first, and auto tuner second, but one that has spawned a long and illustrious partnership with BMW. The Alpina C1 was one of the first cars to be born from that partnership, and proved to be incredibly popular.
Why? Well, probably because it offered even greater performance over the stock car, with Alpina getting an extra 27hp from the engine, to give a total of 168hp/125kW. This jump in performance shaved nearly a second off the 323i’s 0-100km/h time, bringing it down to 7.8-seconds.The other factor that garnered it popularity among enthusiasts was its very exclusive availability. Alpina made just 35 C1s, so the fact one has come up for sale in Australia shouldn’t be ignored.
This particular model comes complete with the Alpina Aero/Design package, and it benefits from a fully rebuilt and reupholstered interior in the same, original fabric that wrapped up the Recaro seats when it would have first left the factory. The owner says it hasn’t seen much action in the past 10 years, and as a result, in 2019, it received a whole heap of new parts including injectors, muffler and twin exhaust system, front headlights and tyres. It looks to be an absolute gem of a car, and we can’t imagine it will hang around for long.
So before it does disappear, head to Carsales right now to view more information and register your interest. And just FYI, it’s currently in Victoria.

As the world’s shutters clack, there are Australian citizens scattered from Peru to Bali. Currently unable to get home, some have chosen to go into lockdown in the country they found themselves in.One close example is Bali: as 7News.com.au reported on Thursday, teeming streets turned into a “ghost town” the day after Wednesday’s national holiday, when usually they would be full of both locals and tourists.Instead, “roads have been blocked off by police and authorities are spray[ing] disinfectant around streets and public areas.”“Pecalang, local village security, have also been deployed to stop people on the streets and send them home as part of a day-long lockdown of the island,” 7News.com.au reported.Indonesia has so far recorded just 790 positive cases of Covid-19 across a nation of more than 270 million, and 58 deaths. However, “For the past few days, the number of positive cases has increased by about 100 each day.”“Many health care professionals fear Indonesia is on the brink of a crisis and that the true number of cases and deaths is much higher.”In other words: for now, stay inside. This is exactly what couple Marie Fe and Jake Snow, who make a living blogging the world, are doing.Marie, from Germany, Jake, from Australia, were working on a project in Bali when the crisis hit, and decided to bunker down in a villa for the immediate future, working on a new website. The pair took to Instagram on Wednesday to share what it’s been like. While it appeared a rather luxurious way to ride out COVID, the message of positivity was no different to usual – giving followers an insight into their personal lives. However, some Instagram users took umbrage at the pair’s decision to maintain their sunny side up aesthetic. This was probably not helped by a photo in their feed taken with masks.
“When we hit our lowest point, we are open to our greatest change. We see more community, more support, more selflessness, more action, more teamwork, more care, more consideration,” they captioned the post.
“Our greatest change might be already happening.”
Again, no departure from the pair’s trademark positivity. However, the pair’s chilled approach rubbed some people the wrong way.“I’m sorry but this is going too far. I get the positive message which is great but could you not convey that without posing in masks? You speak about consideration, maybe consider that this might offend people,” one Instagram user wrote beneath the photo.“I’m so sorry I really like you guys, but doctors and nurse are in desperate need for those masks. So even if you need them it should not be turned out as an aesthetic picture for your feed,” wrote another.Others came to Marie and Jake’s defence: “Love this photo and also thinking the same – I believe that what’s happening really might be leading us to our [sic] gratest change.”Here at DMARGE we’re conflicted. We don’t doubt Marie and Jake’s good intentions. And yes: people are pulling together. But they’re also hoarding toilet paper. Also, suggesting COVID is all just the set up for some “great change” seems insensitive and out of touch. To Marie and Jake’s credit, the pair took the criticism on board, writing under their next post: “If you’re feeling anything like us you probably want to help out in anyway you can. You probably want to say something but you’re worried it will be taken the wrong way and you’re probably thinking that if you don’t say anything, is that even worse?”
“You probably want to stay positive but you’re worried that if you’re too positive, people will think you don’t care. You probably want to cry and lay in your room and not do anything but you’re worried that you’re being over dramatic and you don’t deserve to feel sorry for yourself when others have it much worse. You’re probably just trying to get through this and help as best you can like the rest of us.”
“However you’re feeling and whatever you’re doing, just know that it’s ok! We are all in this together, we all react differently, we are all affected differently. Help if you can, cry if you feel like it, be as positive as you possibly can, share if you have the strength and support others who try.”
Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

IWC’s Mark-series of Pilot’s Watches can comfortably be considered as being some of the most iconic within the pilot’s watch category.
The series has a long history, with the first model being launched in 1936. Back then, IWC was one of the first companies to produce a watch that was able to withstand the rigours of military flight, such as vibrations, extreme temperatures, and ever-changing light conditions.
The IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark IX did exactly that. It arrived with a black dial, luminous hands and a calibre 83 movement that could withstand shocks and changing temperatures. IWC didn’t actually officially call it the Mark IX, and the follow-up model, the Mark X, was named as such by the British Ministry of Defence.

Fast forward some 75 years and we reach the launch of the IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII (now officially named so) in 2016. As a relative newcomer to the world of horology, I was excited to spend a week with the Mark XVIII to see how it would feel wearing a watch from a high-end manufacturer, not to mention the fact I’ve been an IWC fan for some time, and this was the first time I’d been exposed to one.
Back To Basics
The first thing that strikes you when you open the box is just how ‘simple’ and minimal the Mark 18 dial is. You still get the black dial with white numerals and markings that have resonated with the Pilot’s Watch ever since the inaugural model, but place a Mark 17 next to it, and immediately you’ll see IWC has made a number of changes to the design.
Time For A Date
The first obvious difference lies with the date window. Some purists may argue that pilot’s watches shouldn’t have a date window at all. For me personally, I’m a fan. Being able to quickly glance down to see the date is a major help. Of course, with this not being an annual or a perpetual calendar, it requires manual intervention during the months that have 30 days, and February.

IWC has opted for a single date window this time around. If you look at the Mark 17, you’ll see it has a triple date window, with a small red arrow pointing to the correct date. Having only seen images of the Mark 17, I can’t be certain which variation I prefer, but I can say I’m at least intrigued by the triple date, as it’s not a feature I’ve personally come across before.
Still, a single date window does the job, but I feel like IWC could have either moved it a little more towards the centre of the dial, and kept the ‘3’ numeral, or moved it a little further out. With the ‘12’ and ‘3’ being the only numerals missing from the dial, it can look a little disjointed. On the 17, IWC removed the 12, 3, 6 and 9 to make it a little more symmetrical.
Sticking To Its Roots
Other subtle changes from the Mark 17 to this variation include a slight change in position for the small triangle with two flanking dots at the 12 o’clock position. This symbol can be found on a number of pilot’s watches, not just those made by IWC, and was implemented so that pilots could quickly and easily decipher where the 12 o’clock position was, both during the day and night. For me, the positioning on the Mark 18 is more beneficial than on its predecessor, as it has allowed IWC to fit in a full seconds sub-dial, a useful feature for many watch-wearers.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better
As for sizing, IWC has settled for a 40mm case with this model. That’s a reduction of 1mm from the 17, which itself was up to 41mm from 39mm of the Mark 16. Before putting the Pilot’s Watch on my wrist, I was used to wearing a 38mm Field watch, so the extra couple of millimetres was certainly welcome. I’d like to compare against a 41mm case, but I have no complaints with the 40mm sizing – it was a sweet spot for me.
Leather Me Up
IWC has attached a Santoni leather strap to the Mark 18. It’s been a little while since I’ve worn a leather strap on a watch, and since having the IWC on my wrist, it’s clear I can be very particular when it comes to leather.
The strap here is seriously well-made, and I love the flash of orange on the underside (not just because it’s my favourite colour, but because I feel it makes the watch a little more playful) but for my personal taste, it was a little stiff (although I imagine this will subside after longer wear) and I wasn’t fully taken with the shinier finish. From my week with it, I’ve settled on the fact I’m more of a soft, matte leather kind of guy. I definitely prefer it over the alligator leather strap on the Mark 17, however.

Keep It Moving
The movement of a watch can be a deal breaker for many watch enthusiasts, with the debate of in-house vs outsourced being as old as time itself. As for which is better can be hard to say, but one thing’s for sure, if a watch’s movement is made in-house, it’s more exclusive and therefore can tug at the heartstrings of the horology aficionados out there.
In the case of the IWC Mark 18, it uses a Caliber 35111 self-winding movement, that’s manufactured by Sellita, but made to IWC’s specifications. The same movement is used by IWC in a number of their other watch families, including the Portofino, Da Vinci and Ingenieur.
It is, however, a different movement to that found in the Mark 17 predecessor, as that model used the Caliber 30110, which is actually an ETA 2892, again, with IWC in-house tweaks.
But while it may not be IWC-made, the movement shouldn’t be disregarded. It has a 42-hour power reserve, and in my week wearing it, I never once had to jump-start it again. Yes, I wore it most days, but there was a good 30 hour period where it sat on my bedside table. When I came back to it, it was still ticking and still accurate.

A Lasting Impression
I was sad to see the Mark 18 leave when IWC asked for it back. In my brief time with it, I found it to be the perfect daily wear timepiece. I definitely have a taste for more minimal pieces, even when it comes to other accessories and clothing, so the Mark 18 was the perfect companion for my wrist.
I would definitely put a case for its AU$6,550 asking price being affordable. It’s not a great deal for a watch from a company with a history as illustrious as IWC’s, not to mention the level of build quality you’re getting as well.
The Competition
You’d have to spend a couple of thousand dollars more to get the ‘entry level’ Rolex Oyster Perpetual. But if it’s a pilot’s watch you’re after, you could even consider IWC’s own Spitfire Automatic.
This model was part of IWC’s new Spitfire collection launched in 2019 and comes with an in-house manufactured 32000 movement. It has a very similar dial to the Mark 18, along with a date window and a rather fetching NATO strap, which can in some ways make it more ‘authentic’ and so is well worth your consideration.

Skeleton Bay. Grajagan. Deadmans. Gnarloo. Criticise them for their hyperbolic naming, but you can’t accuse surfers of crowd-seeking. Yes, there are certain places that look like water parks (Bondi, Manly, Snapper), but in those spots, surfing has sensibly been banned.
Leaving the whole: “you’ve got more chance of getting sick in the supermarket” debate to the side (as Coastalwatch recently pointed out, we’re still waiting on the science to tell us exactly how risky surfing is right now), there’s one big lesson society can learn from surfers in these troubling times.
Social distancing.
Surfers have, according to Stab Mag, been doing this ever since the second guy showed up at Malibu. Here’s how you can make like one (Russell Bierke, shows us how it’s done, in happier times, below).
So: social distancing is the one big lesson, but how do you do it like a surfer? We’ve broken it down into four points below.
Check the forecast
Many supermarkets now have schedules. Check them. Also, take note while there: figure out the ebbs and flows. Come back at less busy times. When inside, avoid getting stuck in eddies, go with the flow, think forward, and acknowledge people with a nod of the head, not a bear hug.
Embrace social shaming
In the water, anyone breaking an unwritten rule is shamed, even if the days of physical altercations are mostly over. So: next time someone forgets to social distance, feel free to – politely – (and verbally) pull them up.
Prepare
The right tools for the right conditions. Bring your own bags to the supermarket. Wear shoes when going for a stroll around the block. Predict when you might be feeling down and stock chocolate and wine accordingly.
Make do
Conditions not perfect? Stuck at home? Adjust your mindset and make the most of it. Read a book. Try this epic self-isolation workout. Go to the cyber pub.

Staying fit during the current lockdown measures is, on paper, pretty easy, thanks to a wealth of home workout articles and videos available to follow along to. But some of those workouts will require weights or other equipment that you probably won’t have at home.
However, while it may be true that for basic fitness, just using your bodyweight will do, if you can add some resistance, you’ll get greater results. That’s exactly the mindset of Instagram fitness sensation and fellow “bro” Jo Lindner. The fast-talking German may come across a bit comical to some, but the physical size of him, and the way he teaches you exercises, prove he definitely knows what he’s talking about.
He’s well aware we’re all being told to stay at home right now, and so he’s come up with six exercises you can easily do at home with the addition of a resistance band, and you can pick up this for just A$18 / US$12.
He admits the exercises probably won’t see you piling on muscle, but they’ll at least help you maintain the gains you’ve already made. So here’s a breakdown of Jo’s workout to keep you in top shape, bro.
Military Press
The military press is a great chest and shoulder workout. In a gym, you’d normally carry out this exercise using a barbell, or perhaps a set of dumbbells. With a resistance band, simply stand on it and hold two ends, with your elbows at right angles to the floor.
Then lift upwards until your arms are straight. Jo adds that if you find there isn’t much resistance from the band, hold it a little further down and even wrap it around your hands a bit if needed, to create more tension.
Chest Press
The chest press is a favourite of many a gym-goer, and it’s one you can continue to do at home. All you have to do is sit on a chair, wrap the resistance band around the back and extend your arms forward as you normally would with the equipment at the gym. Jo recommends you bring your arms up to target the whole chest area.
Single Arm Bicep Curls
What gym-bro workout would be complete without some bicep curls. Fortunately, using a resistance band is just as simple as using a dumbbell. Just step on the band, and curl. For extra resistance, adjust the point in the band you step on.
Front Raises
This one is similar to the military press, but instead of lifting above your head, you lift up and out in front of you. Step inside the band, hold the other ends at shoulder width and lift. As with the other exercises, you can adjust the intensity by changing where you hold the band.
Tricep Extension
It’s not all about biceps when it comes to big arms, but you need to work your triceps too. The resistance band comes to your rescue once again. Step inside it as you did with the front raises and military press, adjust it so that the band runs up behind you, hold the ends with a close grip and extend your arms as you would if you were performing the same exercise with dumbbells. Adjust the level of tension as required.
Rows
Rowing exercises are great for your back, so being able to continue doing them at home with a resistance band is ideal. For this exercise, step on both strands of the band, holding either end in your hands. Bend your body over so it’s virtually parallel to the floor, and slowly pull your arms upwards, keeping them close to your body.
Follow these exercises to maintain your current state and as soon as the lockdown is lifted, you can get back into the gym and carry on where you left off.

Men’s Workout FAQ
Resistance bands are usually color-coded according to tension level. It is best to get at least three - light, medium, and heavy – since different muscle groups require varied resistance levels. Resistance bands are used to stretch your muscles and build strength in the upper and lower body by stretching your muscles, but they can also improve joint mobility and flexibility. If you do not have a resistance band at home, you may use nylon tights or leggings. Choose an old pair that you will not mind stretching out. How do I choose a resistance band?

Dating a woman can at times be tough. Yes, we have an abundance of dating apps to make the process a lot easier, but after they’ve done their job of matching us, it’s down to us guys to do the rest with our chat. But what might work on one girl, may have the complete opposite effect on another. One such single bachelor found that out recently, albeit somewhat accidentally. Sean Kernan is the protagonist of this story, and he not only discovered a new dating trend from it, but he secured himself a successful date.Starting with that dating trend: ‘negging’. It refers to a tactic employed by a guy, where he will speak down to a woman, and generally just act like a jerk, in an attempt for her to think he’s “just being silly” and as a result, will like him.A similar tactic can be taken by woman towards guys, of course, but it’s fair to say negging is more likely to be used by the younger lotharios out there, proven by the fact Sean had never even heard of the term (or realised there was a name for his unintentional behaviour).
View this post on Instagram
But negging is exactly what Sean did, after he was invited out by his friend ‘Katie’, to meet up with her and her friends for drinks. Sean joined them and got himself acquainted, only to then realise that the woman sitting next to him looked remarkably familiar. And that was because he’d seen her on Tinder just a day before. But he swiped left.It was then after a fair few drinks, that Sean revealed this fact to ‘Rachel’ – just the fact he saw her on Tinder. The latter part comes later. And this is where the story gets juicy.‘Rachel’ asked Sean if he’d swiped right on her when she popped up on his feed. Poor Sean was put on the spot, and no matter what he did, it wasn’t going to look good. Not only is he a bad liar, so claiming he’d swiped left would’ve only ended up with him digging a hole too deep to get out of, but he paused a touch before he even answered.
“You, didn’t swipe yes?!”“Well – I knew…you were…close friends with Katie and all…”
Our heart bleeds for Sean.Fortunately for our budding bachelor, honesty really was the best policy. As the two shared more drinks throughout the evening, with Rachel throwing in the odd joke, “Oh but I’m not hot enough to swipe right on?.”“Oh well, would you swipe right on her?!”Sean claims, “In some bizarro-land reality, telling her I swiped left was the sexiest thing she’d ever heard.”And perhaps because he wasn’t even trying to hit on her, he was able to be more himself. “My experience at that bar did provide an interesting contrast to the times where I was pulling out all the stops, being charming, making reservations, trying to be sweet and funny – but really, just chasing a woman who was only mildly interested, only to watch her slip through my fingers.”
“And then there I was seeing a woman shapeshift when she found out I swiped left on her.”
Sean adds, “If anything it is a testament to the importance of keeping it cool when you are in the initial stages of dating. Don’t be slapping your knee and laughing at everything the other person says.”“Coming off as overly interested will make you seem like a low-value prospect, like you don’t have many equitable options. Take the edge off your pursuit. Dangle a bit of ambiguity; it is like jet fuel to the attraction.”Sean didn’t say whether or not he ended up dating ‘Rachel’ or not, but the moral from this story is that it’s always better to be yourself, and be honest with yourself about the type of girl you want to date, rather than go with a “any girl will do” mindset.
