Nutrition Coach Reveals The Keto Diet’s Biggest Myth
Nutrition Coach Reveals The Keto Diet’s Biggest Myth

There’s no denying the appeal of a burger (yes, even a vegie burger for you vegans out there), but when it comes to the raging debate between the keto diet and a regular healthy diet, there’s been no shortage of keto combatants who are quick to point out the superiority of their nutrition practices over another.

For the uninitiated, the keto diet is basically a diet which endorses an extremely low-carb intake or even zero carb intake. This in theory forces the body into a state of ketosis which sees it breaking down protein and fat for energy as opposed to carbs. The result is supposedly weight loss.

Graeme Tomlinson who is a nutrition coach took to Instagram to dispel the keto diet’s biggest myth in today’s trend-driven health and fitness space.

“The Keto diet has credence regarding epilepsy,” he said in the post.

“But for rational human beings, including level headed keto dieters, this comparison highlights some extreme and farcical concepts of the ketogenic diet regarding fat loss.”

Using a burger comparison, Tomlinson highlighted the calorie intake between a regular burger and a keto burger without carbs.

“The extreme beliefs that carbs inhibit fat loss and that fat can be shed in a state of ketogenic caloric surplus are both fanciful and false. In fact, they are as deluded as believing that this avocado bun won’t slide around in your hands like a BMW in the snow. Rigorous studies continuously negate direct relationship between moderate carbohydrate consumption and weight gain.”⁣

The truth, according to Tomlinson, is that carbs has absolutely nothing to do with it and your overall caloric intake does.

“Like any method of eating, going keto is an option if it is rational and sustainable for an individual,” he says.

“But given the demise of rationality in the fitness industry, it is hardly surprising that keto ‘conceptual fat loss exclusivities’ (which rips up 7 billion years of evidence) keep prevailing.” ⁣

⁣Tomlinson explains that such pro-keto/anti-carb beliefs would instantly identify the ‘keto burger’ as the best option for fat loss even though it contains a high volume of cheese and streaky bacon.

“Yet, by virtue of rationality, fat loss is (and always will be) about achieving an overall caloric deficit, regardless of the food consumed. Therefore, in isolation, this keto burger is more detrimental to fat loss than this regular burger.⁣”

The real answer to this is that both burgers can be an option and the ketogenic diet can work for fat loss, but only if the state of caloric deficit is achieved, i.e. a shortage in the amount of calories consumed relative to the amount of calories required for maintenance of current body weight.

In other words if you’re smashing through keto burgers without regulating how much of it you eat, then you won’t be losing any weight anytime soon. As with most things a balanced diet needs to be paired with balanced exercise and no one method is the silver bullet.

Italy Bans Australian Travellers’ Favourite Food From Roman Landmark
Italy Bans Australian Travellers’ Favourite Food From Roman Landmark

Whether you see it as a colossal tragedy or an overdue resurgence of respect, Italy’s culture ministry has officially banned a key feature of most Australian backpackers’ diets from an ancient Roman landmark.

That’s right: Maccas. Your go to source of grease, as reported by News.com.au, “won’t be setting up another shop in Rome… [after] a proposal for a new restaurant to be built next to the ancient Baths of Caracalla has been squashed.”

Why? According to the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, because it would be disrespectful to serve quarter pounders and fries so close to archaeological wonders.

“The wonders of Rome must be protected,” Raggi said on Twitter.

As The New York Post reports, “McDonald’s has more than 40 outlets in the Italian capital, some of them in the vicinity of landmarks such as the Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and the Vatican, but not hitherto in the midst of its revered ancient quarter.”

“In 1986, intellectuals and television personalities fought, ultimately in vain, against the opening of the first McDonald’s in the Piazza di Spagna, calling it an offense to Italy’s traditional food culture.”

Now it seems, to the disgust of convenience-seeking shoestring backpackers (and presumably to the delight of everyone else), the Italian municipality has drawn a line in the cobblestones, enforcing laws that state “new construction must meet strict criteria to reflect historical tradition,” (The New York Post).

For those interested in visiting the area, “the former garden centre that would have hosted the new McDonald’s is located between the baths and the ancient Aurelian walls, a few hundred meters away from the Coliseum and the Circus Maximus,” (The New York Post).

The Most Comfortable Men’s Dress Shoe Brands That Won’t Compromise Your Style
The Most Comfortable Men’s Dress Shoe Brands That Won’t Compromise Your Style

Believe it or not, it is possible to get yourself a pair of comfortable dress shoes. We know, we know, you’re probably thinking that most men’s dress shoes are not comfortable. But they’re essential to any man’s wardrobe; particularly for those who have to don them most days for work.

But when most of us think of comfortable dress shoes for men, we picture hideous shoes that no one under the age of 80 would wear… So, this begs the question: how can I get comfortable dress shoes that look great?

Sole and behold. That’s where we come in.

You need to know what to look for in a shoe that’ll make it comfortable, what leather type is best for your lifestyle (and budget), and you also need to know what brands have mastered how to embed technologies that make dress shoes comfortable in a way that still makes them stylish.

What Makes A Dress Shoe Comfortable?

Think of your favourite pair of running shoes, they’re probably super comfortable, right? You could wear them all day without any issues whatsoever. The most comfortable dress shoes that feel like sneakers exhibit similar features, which we’ve detailed below:

Flexibility

Feet are designed to move in a very specific way, and what makes most dress shoes so uncomfortable is that they restrict this natural movement. Running shoes better mimic the natural movements of your feet and hence are more comfortable. When looking for comfortable dress shoes, look for pairs with a more flexible upper (the part that covers the top surface of your foot).

Insoles

Most high-quality dress shoes have a leather insole, which is great for durability but not for comfort, at least to begin with. So, for extra comfort, you’ll want to look for dress shoes that have extra cushioning on the inside. Clarks is a great brand for this, but you will be able to find other brands that offer added cushioning for all-day comfort.

Leather Types

Leather dress shoes aren’t just leather dress shoes. Those who are serious about how their feet feel need to consider the leather types that comfortable dress shoes are made from and there are four common types to consider.

Full Grain Leather

This is the most common type of leather used and is also the best quality found in comfortable dress shoes. Full-grain leather is characterised by its luxurious and smooth surface with minimal flaws. This means that it’s often used in its natural state without the need for sanding or buffing of imperfections.

More importantly, it’s strong because the fibres and grain haven’t been modified from their natural state. Aesthetically, full-grain also develops a natural patina layer that protects the leather from wear. We still recommend you look after your comfortable dress shoes with additional supplements though.

Top Grain Leather

Top grain leather is the second-highest quality leather found on comfortable dress shoes. It is thinner and therefore more flexible than full-grain leather. Its surface is often sanded and is less breathable. The positive to this is that it has better stain resistance than full-grain leather.

Genuine Leather

If you needed proof that marketing is a powerful tool then this is it. Genuine leather dress shoes are made from leather but they’re the lowest quality you can get. These kinds of shoes are made from the leftover leather of high-end products – the ones that quality shoemakers reject. As a result, these dress shoes are less comfortable on the feet and don’t last as long. Their advantage is that they’re widely available and affordable.

Corrected Grain Leather

One of the lesser-known leathers is the corrected grain. think of this one as a hybrid leather that takes a special type of leather that is further fixed or refined by leatherworkers. What this means is that an artificial grain has been embossed over the top of it before it is refined with sanding, dyes and stains.

It’s also one of the more affordable options for comfortable dress shoes.

Lewis Hamilton’s Lazy Look Came Straight Out Of An 80s Music Video
Lewis Hamilton’s Lazy Look Came Straight Out Of An 80s Music Video

He took out the Hungary GP overnight but before the big race Lewis Hamilton was making other kinds of waves in the Formula One paddock. Say hello to the future of men’s style…as imagined from the perspective of the wacky 80s.

The 34-year-old Mercedes driver stepped out during the practice session in some truly comfort-inspiring gear as provided by the team’s sponsor, Tommy Hilfiger.

The baggy nylon popover with oversized branding (with no shirt) and the neon tech pants also in an oversized fit provided some eye-catching moments for fans, but it was the full wraparound reflective silver sunglasses with white framing that really made Hamilton’s laid back look a nod to the 80s era club scene. These bad boys are made by Police and designed by the F1 star as part of their latest collaboration.

Besides rocking a fairly well put together outfit, Hamilton even managed to pair elements of white and silver with the Mercedes cap logo and a blinged-up chain necklace. The collar? It has to be popped, obviously.

From afar the man looks like he’s more ready to hit the dance floor than the race track and there’s nothing wrong with that. Oddly, Hamilton didn’t opt for any crazy footwear, instead wearing his sponsor-supplied Puma black sneakers. Sadly there wasn’t an IWC timepiece on his wrist considering they also sponsor the team.

A bit too much stylin’ for Formula One? James Hunt would duly disagree.

Iconic French Riviera Photo Reveals The Freedom Europeans Have No One Else Does
Iconic French Riviera Photo Reveals The Freedom Europeans Have No One Else Does

It’s not shrugging off your bikini and allowing the sun to envelop your breasts. It’s not peeling off your board shorts, sans judgement, and receiving a rather unusual tan. It’s better than both. And — as this scorching European summer rammed home with an icy kick to the throat — Australian and American beaches are void of one of life’s greatest pleasures: drinking a cold brew — unmolested by rangers or do-gooders — on the beach.

Whether it’s a can of beer from the Marseille street vendors, an Antibes aperitif or a glass of white wine in Cannes (as seen in the following iconic sunset photo), enjoying an alcoholic beverage on the beach is a luxury the French (and most of continental Europe) take for granted, and which still makes most expats look around nervously, half expecting a megaphone wielding lifeguard to be bearing down upon them.

This phenomenon can be also seen at Marseille’s Calanques de Cassis.

And the chilled out atmosphere it produces is also evident from a bird’s eye view.

It’s also seen at the French Riviera’s equivalent of Bondi Icebergs (although Antibes’ classic Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc now looks slightly different to what it did in 1976, we understand the “drinks by the pool” policy is still as liberal as ever).

This feeds into a broader discussion over the freedoms Europeans are afforded, which Australians and Americans have been either too prudish or too safety conscious to permit, including going topless (should one wish)…

Why is this? While some would argue Australia and America’s beaches are a lot more dangerous to drink at (which they are, compared to the French Riviera), one look at the WCT worthy surf of Les Landes’ most popular nudist (and beer swilling) beach, Les Culs Nus, blows this theory out of the water.

Another explanation, offered by Traveller, is “Europeans get to have nice things… because they don’t mess it up.”

“They get to drink in public because they don’t get rowdy and make a nuisance of themselves. They get to have a freshly poured beer down by the beach because they don’t annoy anyone.”

“They get to grab their wine glass and go and stand in the middle of the town square to chat to friends… They get to drink out of a proper glass when they do this, too, because they’re trusted to act like adults and not break that glass or try to steal it.”

Is there some truth in this? Possibly. But hey: at least it makes the novelty of things like stripping off, cycling without a helmet, double parking and enjoying a beer at 11am that bit tastier when we do make the pilgrimage.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Watch Could Fund A Small Rogue Nation
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Watch Could Fund A Small Rogue Nation

Is it really surprising that a man reportedly worth $450 million dollars can rock a watch that could fund a small nation? Not to us. Enter CR7, or a man better known as Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 34-year-old Portuguese football player was in Madrid this week to accept the  ‘Marca Leyenda’ award and he didn’t shy away from showing off his latest piece of wrist candy.

Decked out in a simple patterned dress shirt and blue trousers, Ronaldo let his diamond studded, high complication watch do all the talking. We couldn’t figure out what it is ourselves but given Ronaldo’s past encounters with blinged out wristwear, we’re suspecting it could be a fully custom Jacob & Co. piece or even a Franck Muller creation.

As evidence that Ronaldo doesn’t like to mess around with his high complication timepieces, here he was rocking a Franck Muller tourbillon last year at a press conference. The price of this piece from the watchmaker’s Round collection? US$1.5 million.

Given that’s the kind of track record we’re working with, you can expect the new watch he’s wearing to fall into a similar price bracket.

IWC Unveil Their Most Unique Big Pilot’s Watch Ever
IWC Unveil Their Most Unique Big Pilot’s Watch Ever

It’s been a long time coming for lefties but it’s finally here. IWC Schaffhausen have released the right-handed version of one of their signature watches, the Big Pilot ‘Right Hander’.

Made especially for left-handed watch wearers, the ‘Right Hander’ sees the fundamental re-engineering of the Big Pilot to have the crown repositioned from the right side to the left side for efficient adjustability and ergonomics when worn on the right wrist. Given the size of the Big Pilot’s crown, it also makes sense to do this to prevent it digging into the inner wrist.

Beyond that crucial design element, the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition ‘Right Hander’ features familiar specifications in the form of a 46.2mm stainless steel case which houses the automatic calibre 52010 by IWC.

Functions include hours, minutes, date, power reserve indicator and a running seconds counter. The dial meanwhile is finished in a brushed metallic black hue with contrasting flat black sub-dial colours. As indicated on the power reserve dial, the watch provides 7 days of juice.

The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition ‘Right Hander’ will be limited to 250 pieces worldwide and retail for $21,200.
