Breitling’s Latest Chronograph Watch Collection Is A Trip Back To The Future

Breitling’s current trajectory under recently-appointed CEO Georges Kern continues to look up.From seeking out interesting collaborations like their recent one with Australia’s very own Deus Ex Machina to unique material innovations such as the Breitlight composite and ECONYL straps of their new Endurance Pro, Breitling is making exciting, forward-thinking moves with Kern at the helm. But sometimes to move forward, you have to look back; honour your heritage. And that’s exactly what Kern’s done with Breitling’s ‘newest’ collection: drawing upon over 137 years of history, the Breitling Premier Heritage Collection proves there’s much more to the brand than just pilot’s watches. The original Premier collection first hit the market back in 1940, designed by Willy Breitling, grandson of the brand’s founder, Léon. These groundbreaking watches took the technical prowess of Breitling’s action-tested chronographs and gave them a stylish touch: Breitling had always been a leader when it came to the development of chronographs but Willy was one of the first to recognise a market for a gentlemanly, fashion-forward version of the handy tool.Fittingly, the Premier Heritage Collection’s watches feature designs that closely resemble those first pioneered by Willy back in the 40s but also boast a variety of modern innovations under the skin. The collection includes six watches divided into three distinctive categories: the Chronograph, the Duograph, and the Datora, with references available in either stainless steel or 18ct red gold. All feature Arabic numerals, vintage-inspired hands and semi-shiny alligator straps with tone-on-tone stitching. Crucially, all are COSC-certified chronometers and water-resistant up to 100m. making them eminently modern, capable watches.

The three models, shown here in both metals for a grand total of six watches.
The Premier Chronograph is the simplest of the three variants but by no means the least impressive. With a 40mm case size, it’s slightly smaller than contemporary tastes would normally dictate, but an appropriate throwback to older case sizes, as well as emblematic of the burgeoning swing back towards smaller case sizes we’ve seen over the last 24 months. The gold model’s aged silver dial (ref. RB0930371G1P1) looks fantastic but the real standout is the steel’s pistachio green dial (ref. AB0930D31L1P1) – one that’s sure to have real watch fans champing at the bit.RELATED: Australians Are Finally Becoming More Adventurous With Luxury WatchesThe Premier Duograph, as the name suggests, has a unique double chronograph (also known as a rattrapante function) which enables the wearer to measure two elapsed times simultaneously thanks to its two superimposed chronograph hands. This is one of the most elaborate complications in the watchmaking world and truly speaks to Breitling’s technical expertise. Slightly larger than the Chronograph at 42mm, the steel comes with a blue dial (ref. AB1510171C1P1) and the gold with a black dial (ref. RB1510251B1P1).Also at 42mm is the Premier Datora, which stands out among the three variants thanks to its highly visible and complex functions – namely its day-date and moon-phase displays – real hallmarks of haute horlogerie. Unlike the other two models, which are manual timepieces (much like the 40s models) the Datora is self-winding, with a 70-hour power reserve. The gold (ref. RB2510371G1P1) comes with a silver dial like the Chronograph’s, but the steel (ref. AB2510201K1P1) comes with a distinct copper dial that looks delightfully retro. All six watches are truly beautiful and a fitting homage to Breitling’s heritage models, while simultaneously reflecting Breitling’s innovative drive and modern fortunes. All we know is this: Willy Breitling would be rather jealous…

‘No Coddle Zone’: Flight Attendant Rant Every Man Needs To Hear
‘No Coddle Zone’: Flight Attendant Rant Every Man Needs To Hear

Flight attendants are the angels of the sky. The grease that keeps the aviation universe spinning. A crucial cog in the machinations of an A380. A godsend. But they have officially had enough – they are tired of our ‘guardian angel’ complex.Judging by the latest developments across the pond, it would seem rules and regulations are finally catching up to their disgruntlement (if fortuitously, not directly in response to it).The United States’ Federal Aviation Administration (the FAA) finally started meeting unruly in air acts or flight attendant disrespect at 40,000ft with much harsher fines in January. This came after US airlines banned more than 2,000 travellers for refusing to follow mask requirements.Though bad behaviour in the skies is by no means a new phenomenon, statistics show that – in the US at least – it has become more frequent.According to CNBC, “From January through the end of November, the latest available data, the FAA pursued 108 enforcement actions for such behaviour. That put it at a rate of 3.1 per 10 million enplaned passengers on U.S. airlines, double last year’s rate and the highest since 2004.”The result? The FAA in January announced it would drain travellers’ bank accounts to the tune of (a maximum of) $35,000 for unruly behaviour, instead of a usual warnings procedure. As one flight attendant anonymously told media, crew are tired of playing “babysitter for adults.”Boston.com reported that the stricter policy would be in place until March 30th.We’re now in April. And in the wake of this extra heavy fine dissipating, there is an important flight attendant rant we reckon every man should hear.Deep from the archives of Flyertalk – an Internet forum for discussion of airline frequent-flyer programs, hotel loyalty programs and other issues related to air travel – the rant comes from 2016, and is more relevant than ever.

Inspired by an article detailing apples kissed by flight attendants being sold for $20 and an article discussing why men fall in love with air hostesses, the author – travel writer and air hostess Sarah Steegar – takes to her keyboard to share her thoughts.“While the article’s theory is that flying makes men feel vulnerable and flight attendants offer a sense of control (I suppose that could be a part of it), I just can’t help but think of stories and images like this one,” she writes, linking to an image of a flight attendant kissing an apple.“The sexualization of the job by the airlines may have passed its peak in the U.S., but it’s still kicking internationally and in passengers’ collective imaginations. Our companies may not be allowed to exploit so directly, but there are less direct ways – i.e. via the stories and images permitted at some other carriers.”“Remember Richard Branson openly insisting on the red shoes for Virgin’s female flight attendant uniforms to ‘sex up’ the brands? How about the fact that many of British Airways’ female crew only recently won the right to wear slacks? The first few times I mentioned ‘flight attendant’ on Twitter I got a slew of, ahem, interesting followers.”“Meanwhile, it didn’t escape my attention that the ‘men love flight attendants’ article still referred to us as ‘air hostesses.’ I’m not offended, but it’s a bit old-fashioned for their modern theory. I also noticed that the article’s romantic examples are limited to what can be summed up as ‘sometimes male celebrities end up with flight attendants.’ There isn’t any input from regular guys, so the article doesn’t convince me much.”

“When I think of the women that male celebrities would categorically go for, it’s not usually about those who make them feel safe when they’re vulnerable. Unless that’s what Victoria’s Secret models do for them, too?”

A Pan American (Pan Am) airhostess serving champagne in the first class cabin of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. Image: Getty.
“Don’t think I’m totally cynical. I think the celebrity/flight attendant pairings are ultimately about the fact that our job gives a rare opportunity for extended one-on-one mingling in what is, for a celebrity life, a circumstance in which they are treated rather ‘normally.’ That can be attractive in itself. But when it comes to the claim that men in general ‘love to fall in love with flight attendants,’ sure, I’d prefer to think it’s about our reassuring presence in the midst of vulnerable situations.”

“However, what actually comes to mind is the fact that some men would pay good money for old food I’ve kissed based solely on my job.”

While we’d question what is wrong with parting a fool from his money, the rest of her points are hard to argue with.According to Tornos News, psychologist Judi James thinks men put flight attendants on a pedestal due to a “feeling of helplessness” they feel when they fly, which makes them vulnerable to people paid to look after them.James, Tornos News claims, told MailOnline Travel: ‘When people fly they are in a state of helplessness – they leave all their ability to control at check-in and this makes them vulnerable and dependent.”“They might also be anxious or scared of flying so the hostess becomes a method of support and reassurance, you just have to sit back and let them take care of you.”“Because you are helpless and they are taking control of your life, this creates feelings of love and dependency, almost a parental feeling.

“It’s the same reason that some patients fall in love with doctors and psychiatrists.”

If you want to keep in a flight attendant’s good books, Smarter Travel recommends you be nice (“a kind word goes further than most passengers will ever know”), self-sufficient (don’t be “that person who boards the plane, finds his seat, and then blocks the aisle arranging everything he needs”) and take out your earbuds when they are trying to talk to you (or serve food).A microcosm of life in general? You be the judge.

Legendary Singer Tony Bennett Proves Age Is No Barrier To Good Style
Legendary Singer Tony Bennett Proves Age Is No Barrier To Good Style

Most Australian men give up on being fashionable past the age of 50. The Lanvin gets swapped out for Lowes and you suddenly develop an interest in things like Ridge Wallets and flip-up sunglasses. But some men maintain that sartorial muscle well into their 50s and beyond. Last month, we discussed how Lionel Richie – the perenially popular singer, famous for hits like Hello and Endless Love – seems to defy the aging process, in no small part thanks to his impeccable dress sense. The man’s 71 but he barely looks 40.We thought that was impressive, but then we came across this paparazzi shot of Tony Bennett. Relaxing in New York’s Central Park, the 94-year-old crooner looks crisp as hell, pairing a brown moleskin jacket with an Adidas Beckenbauer tracksuit and a colourful seersucker shirt. Like a Brooklyn hipster, without any of the piercings. It’s a decent fit, made even more impressive by the fact he’s nearly pushing 100. And you only have to take a quick dive into his Instagram (does your grandpa have an IG?) to see that Bennett’s the real ‘dressing over 50’ champion of all time.

Image: Backgrid
From casual suiting numbers to rocking a bright red turtleneck better than a Gen Z arts major, it’s clear that the only thing more velvety than his voice is his fashion sense. Bennett hasn’t let his age – or the onset of Alzheimer’s – dull his shine one bit.RELATED: John Legend Revives The 1960s’ Most Overlooked Men’s Style TrendA contemporary of Frank Sinatra who has worked with everyone from Nat King Cole to Amy Winehouse, Bennett is one of the most famous singers of all time. Best known for his signature song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, his most notable recent work was his Grammy Award-winning collaborative album with Lady Gaga, 2014’s Cheek to Cheek. He’s also an accomplished painter – you know, because being a musical and style icon wasn’t enough. Now that we think of it, both Bennett and Richie have stayed consistently stylish and youthful… Maybe you just need to become a golden-voiced crooner in order to stay fashionable past one’s mid-life crisis?

Australia & New Zealand’s Travel Bubble Reality Nobody Wants To Admit
Australia & New Zealand’s Travel Bubble Reality Nobody Wants To Admit

Tough times make tough rinds taste sweet. So even though I don’t want to upset our wonderful neighbours, someone has to be today’s hair in the soup: the news we are now in a reciprocal travel bubble with New Zealand tastes better than it really should.

The unkind might even go as far as to say it’s the only country in the world Australians don’t want to visit.

A post shared by New Zealand (@purenewzealand)

Jibes aside, grey nomads and nature lovers will be pleased to note New Zealand has finally given the all-clear for the long-awaited travel bubble with Australia.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern this morning revealed a quarantine-free two-way trans-Tasman travel bubble will start from 11.59pm on Sunday, April the 18th.

The decision comes after months of hold-ups following small outbreaks in both Australia and New Zealand.

It also comes after some genius advertising campaigns by Kiwi tourism agencies (credit where credit is due).

Just because we now have a bubble though doesn’t mean it can’t be put on pause at any time.

“While quarantine-free travel to Australia and vice versa will start in a fortnight, it will not be what it was pre-COVID,” Ms Ardern said.

“While we absolutely wish to encourage family and friends to reunite and visitors to come and enjoy the hospitality New Zealand is ready and waiting to offer, those undertaking travel on either side of the ditch will do so under the guidance of flyer beware.”

“People will need to plan for the possibility of travel being disrupted if there is an outbreak.”

“Once we know about a case in Australia, we will have three possible responses when it comes to flights and access to our border.”

The three? Continue, pause, or suspend.

“If a case is found that is quite clearly linked to a border worker in a quarantine facility and is well contained, you’ll likely see travel continue in the same way.”

“If, however, a case was found that was not clearly linked to the border, and a state responded by a short lockdown to identify more information, we’d likely pause flights from that state in the same way we would stop travel into and out of a region in New Zealand as if it were going into a full lockdown.”

Ms Ardern also said if New Zealand discovered multiple COVID-19 cases of unknown origin, the country would probably suspend flights for a period of time.

Though this development is of course good news for Australians looking to spread their wings a little wider (and for those with friends and family in New Zealand), it may not be the amazing breakthrough you might see it trumpeted as.

Satirical newspaper The Betoota Advocate has already had a pop at the news, with 26,735 people (at the time of writing) giving their snark a ‘like’ on Instagram (see above).

Beyond that, normal international travel is not slated to return until 2023.

There’s your Tuesday dose of grounding, served hot.

Rolex Drops Huge New Model Hint Ahead Of Watches & Wonders 2021
Rolex Drops Huge New Model Hint Ahead Of Watches & Wonders 2021

Watches & Wonders – formerly known as the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (or SIHH) – is the watch industry’s most important trade show. Normally held in Geneva, Switzerland, this year’s show is entirely online, running from the 7th to the 13th of April, and any watch fan worth their salt is already strapping in for a week of horological delights.Forty of the world’s most prominent watch brands are exhibiting at W&W, including names like A. Lange & SöhneCartier, TAG Heuer and Vacheron Constantin – but one of the biggest drawcards is undoubtedly Rolex, who joined the W&W lineup after pulling out of rival show Baselworld last year alongside Chanel, Chopard, Patek Philippe and sister brand Tudor. As the world’s most successful luxury brand, any new Rolex announcement is eagerly anticipated – and naturally attracts a fair degree of speculation. It doesn’t help that Rolex is particularly tight-lipped – although their most recent teaser is pretty bloody blatant.Much like their September 2020 reveal of their update to the iconic Submariner, Rolex has shared a video that very much suggests that an update to the Explorer II model range is on the way. Alpine imagery, that characteristic blue lume and a ‘Mercedes’ hour hand… What else could it be?

The timing would make sense, too. 2021 marks 50 years since the debut of the original ref. 1655 Explorer II, as well as 10 years since Rolex made any changes to the model (having previously upped its case size from 40 to 42mm). There’s a good chance that Rolex will bump the size up even further, as they did with the Submariner.Of course, an update to the Explorer range has been on the cards for a while now. Last year, DMARGE reported on how Explorers on the UK second-hand watch market were getting snatched up in unprecedented numbers, suggesting that even then Rolex insiders were preparing for a shake-up.RELATED: Watch Expert’s Genius Response To Infuriating Industry TrendThe other thing fans will be looking out for is news of any discontinuations. 2020 saw the insanely popular Submariner ‘Hulk’ discontinued, so maybe a new Explorer II will see another tool watch disappear. Maybe the original Explorer? There’s also been plenty of talk that the Air-King (which is very similar to the Explorer I) might be on the chopping block – although, that rumour was circulating last year, too…But we’re living in a time of high-profile discontinuations. Patek Philippe recently discontinued the Nautilus ref. 5711, and then Audemars Piguet followed up with news of the Royal Oak ref. 15202ST’s discontinuation. Being that Rolex is the king of the stainless steel sports watch, will they follow AP and Patek’s lead with a shock discontinuation of their own? Let’s hope not.Three words: watch this space. Or ‘Watches & Wonders’. Either way.UPDATE: Rolex’s presentation just wrapped up – check out our coverage here.

Australia’s ‘Bogan Car Bubble’ Won’t Last Forever, Expert Warns
Australia’s ‘Bogan Car Bubble’ Won’t Last Forever, Expert Warns

The Australian car market is currently hotter than a rusty old Kingswood on a 15-hour road trip.Of course, it’s the COVID-19 crisis that’s made it so crazy, for a multitude of reasons. People have been ditching public transport for private transport. Travel restrictions have seen Aussies spending their holiday money (or government stimulus) on cars instead. Disruption to global trade has seen fewer new cars rolling off production lines and fewer ships bringing cars to our shores, so there’s less supply.Add in a looming “chipageddon” and the humble road trip’s newfound popularity (not to mention would-be investors turning to cars instead of traditional investments) and you have a perfect storm for high car prices. But it’s been ‘bogan’ cars that have seen the most dramatic speculation… And before you get up in arms, ‘bogan’ is not a dirty word. Big, Australian-built sedans like the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore – as well as other local legends like Chrysler Valiants, Geminis or Toyota Crowns – have all become insanely hot property. There’s arguably never been more interest in these relics of Australia’s manufacturing history, and that’s a good thing. What’s truly bizarre, however, is that even less-prestigious (read: ingloriously ugly) 80s and 90s models are booming. Previously considered quite undesirable by most of the motoring public, prices for some of these cars have skyrocketed, particularly if they’re in good condition, have a V8 engine or a manual transmission – sometimes six figures plus. This has left many onlookers scratching their heads: you can understand dropping six figures on a nice Monaro but on a VF Commo? The mind boggles.Still, there’s a market for them, with speculative buyers going absolutely ballistic for any bit of Aussie metal… But not everyone’s convinced these cars will be good investments going into the future. DMARGE spoke exclusively with Carsales‘ Editor-in-Chief Mike Sinclair, who relates he’s sceptical about this current bogan car boom.

“The speculative buying on HSVs, other V8 Holdens and Australian-made cars in general is crazy… But it’s just not sustainable; it won’t last forever. There are few cases where there’s a pot of gold at the end of it.”

“People will get their fingers burned.”

Indeed, Sinclair reckons that it’s not just bogan cars that will start to taper off in value, relating that “the JobSeeker drop-off will affect the market, and take some of the heat out of it.” We’re yet to see that take significant effect on the market, but changes to JobSeeker / JobKeeper are hardly the only economic stressors that might deflate the car market. For example, the property market’s still insanely strong…RELATED: ‘Painful’ Graph Reveals How Long It Takes To Save For A House Deposit In AustraliaThe market’s current mania for bogan cars came to a head at the start of the year. First, we saw a 2017 HSV GTSR W1 Maloo fetch a whopping $1.05 million at auction, becoming the most expensive Aussie ute ever. Then, just over a fortnight later, a 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III sold for a whopping $1.15 million – the most expensive Australian road car ever. For the record, the most expensive Aussie car of all time remains Peter Brock’s 1982 HDT VH Commodore SS which sold for $2.1 million back in 2018 – but it’s not a road-going car, and so is a slightly more difficult comparison. (Standard VH Commodores are going for around $50k right now, however).

The record-beating 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III (try saying that three times fast!) Image: Slattery Auctions
Why the sudden increase in interest in bogan cars? Much of it may have to do with the Holden brand having finally been put out to pasture completely by General Motors over the last twelve months, the quintessential and ubiquitous Australian marque now just consigned to the history books.Holden’s great rival Ford is in an uneasy place, too: the Blue Oval is discontinuing the sale of passenger cars in North America and culling most of their model range Down Under, with only the Focus and Mustang standing out in a sea of SUVs (the Fiesta is still available, but only in ST guise).RELATED: ‘Unloved’ Car Brand Becomes Unexpected Australian Sales SuccessThe craze might also have something to do with the general lack of new cars on the market. If you’re looking for a performance fix, it’s hard to go past a big Aussie sedan, with their vascular engines and rear-wheel-drive goodness. Aftermarket support remains strong, too – great if you want to work on the car yourself to quell some COVID boredom.Time will tell if the bogan car market continues to stay strong. Will rising petrol prices and the move towards electric cars make these vehicles redundant, or make them even more valuable? If only we had a crystal ball…

Chris Hemsworth’s Latest Instagram Workout Will Leave You In Stitches

When he’s not going full beast mode with terrifying new workouts or pulling around the “laziest trainer in the world” on a sled, Chris Hemsworth is out there producing quiet comedy gold.Case in point: the latest video the 37-year-old Australian actor has posted to Instagram, which shows himself and Paul Fisher, an Australian music producer who goes by the name FISHER undergoing a manic session in the Chris’ Centrfit lab.FISHER was nominated for the 2018 ARIA Award for Best Dance Release as well as the Best Dance Recording category at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards for his solo single Losing It – but that meant nothing in the gym as he and Hemsworth brutally cajoled each other in what some on Instagram reckon is the most Australian thing ever.

“If Australia was a video,” one commenter remarked. In the video, the pair can be seen doing cable pulls (with FISHER filming Chris from a “terrible angle”), assault biking, bicep curls, shoulder presses, sled pushing, medicine ball pounding, shoulder shrugs and wrestling. There is also a moment where FISHER chastised Chris (presumably for grunting), saying, “Do you mind mate?” – to which Chris responds, “Shut up.”There is also a cameo where they scream at each other “Eye of the what!?” with the required response being… “Tiger!”They – and their Instagram followers – found it all a great old lark, with comments ranging from: “I never thought Thor would wind up being the funniest Avenger” to “I need this energy when I’m working out.”Two further top comments included: “Me and the boys during gym in highschool” and “The bromance we never knew we needed.”The workouts appear to be paying off, with recent images of Chris showing a set of arms that would put a California Red Oak to shame.

Chris has a bunch of movies in the making, with Thor: Love and Thunder due in 2022, Furiosa set for 2023 and Mad Max: The Wasteland in the works for 2023.

Dan Levy Rips Up The Men’s Fashion Book At The SAG Awards

When you think of Canadian men’s fashion icons, a few names instantly come to mind. Drake. Justin Bieber. Ryan Reynolds. Maybe even Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. But another name you should be adding to that mental list is Dan Levy. The 37-year-old actor and co-writer of acclaimed comedy Schitt’s Creek hasn’t just broken ground when it comes to the portrayal of LGBT characters in mainstream, modern Western television, but he’s also completely rewritten the rulebook on red carpet style.Levy unofficially ‘won’ the Emmys last year with his striking yet incredibly dapper Thom Browne suit and skirt combo (one that even the most stuffy gent would have to admit worked a treat), but he’s upped the ante even further with his latest big style statement.Tuning in from home for the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards, Levy decided to steal the show yet again: wowing fans with a relaxed double-breasted cream suit ensemble courtesy of The Row, a luxury fashion house founded by the Olsen twins.

Slightly oversized and made out of a light linen, Levy’s summery suit stands in stark contrast (quite literally) to the litany of black tuxes and uninspired blazers that normally litter America’s red carpets.Levy’s accessories were on point, too. Round sunglasses, lightweight brown loafers, a cravat-esque silk necktie casually tied, a diamond-encrusted edelweiß brooch and a rose gold Cartier Tank Solo watch (ref. W5200026) made him truly look like a million bucks.RELATED: The Hottest Cartier Watches To Buy In 2021Dan, along with the rest of the cast of Schitt’s Creek, won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, beating out Dead to Me, Ted Lasso, The Flight Attendant and The Great. Debaucherous Dubai Act Lands A Dozen People In Jail
Debaucherous Dubai Act Lands A Dozen People In Jail

What would you wager for the perfect clip? In recent years we’ve seen filmmakers risk everything from cliff edges to public shaming to rack up their view counts.

We now may be able to add public debauchery to this list. Why? A group was arrested over the weekend in Dubai after an outdoor nude photoshoot, rumoured to be part of a publicity stunt for an adult website, was captured from a neighbouring building.

Footage posted online on Saturday shows a group of women having their photo taken on a balcony of one of Dubai’s skyscrapers.

State-linked newspaper The National reported it could be a publicity stunt. Tweets by users like DC-based journalist (and former Dubai guy) Bernie Debusmann appear to support this version of events.

The BBC reports, “Eleven Ukrainian women are among those detained,” (information passed on by the Ukrainian consulate) and that “a Russian was also detained,” (per Russian media).

“Public debauchery carries a sentence of up to six months in prison and a 5,000 dirham [AU$1,778] fine,” (BBC).

Mail Online reports there were “some 40” models involved.

The incident came as a shock in Dubai – a city where people have been jailed for much more docile displays (like kissing in public or drinking alcohol in the wrong place).

The incident took place in Dubai’s upmarket Marina district, prompting some Twitter users to reminisce about their own experiences there.

The Ukrainian consulate told the BBC it will visit the women on Tuesday.

The Russian man who reportedly organised the shoot has also been arrested and according to Russian news agency Ria faces up to 18 months in prison.

Dubai police said the group has been referred to public prosecutors and that “such unacceptable behaviours do not reflect the values and ethics of Emirati society.”

Journalist Debusmann provided a warning for other social media users along similar lines: “The pictures from inside the apartment certainly aren’t for sharing publicly, people. Dubai friends, be smart about this one. I’ll refer you to the case of ‘drunk Brit gets naked at bar for World Cup’ and the video chaos that ensued.”
