Finding money in the back of your jean pockets the day before payday is one of life’s best feelings, actually finding any money is a great feeling particularly if you didn’t know it was there. Now imagine that feeling but instead of cash its an ultra-rare watch hidden in a $25 sofa.A Canadian woman has done just that after finding the Holy Grail of vintage watches, a Rolex Daytona 6241 ‘Paul Newman’ down the back of a sofa she bought for $25 dollars at a thrift store four years ago. Can you imagine getting that sort of value on a crappy IKEA couch off gumtree?
View this post on Instagram
According to watch dealer Paul Altieri, the woman came to him after finding the watch knowing it was valuable, little did she know how valuable. The woman, being a better samaritan that we would be, did try to track down the original owner of the couch but was unable to, meaning the massive pay day was all hers. Upon discovering the value of the watch the woman was quick to answer how she would spend the money.
“I’m going to buy a house and get a boob job.”
The watch is considered by many to be the king of vintage watches and sells for roughly US$250,000 as only 3,000 pieces were made over a three year period between 1966-69, fewer still were made with the Paul Newman exotic dial. The watch was only dubbed the Paul Newman in the 80s because he was seen wearing it so often. In fact, his personal model of the watch broke a record for the most expensive watch ever sold at auction back in 2017, coming in at a wild US$15.5 million. Now excuse us, we have some thrift store sofas to go looking through.

There’s something freeing about cutting loose and wearing what you want to, not what you should wear. There are things we all wear at home when no one else is watching and even that favourite shirt we all wear when no one we know will see us. But when a celebrity does it on a red carpet it is a sight to behold.
Jaden Smith was in Los Angeles at the premiere of his father Will’s new film Gemini Man, and the star was making it clear that he was wearing his outfit for himself. The smile could not be wiped off the youngster’s face who was wearing the latest Louis Vuitton women’s power suit with matching shoes as well.
However, before we get to the suit, we have to talk about the star’s face which is begging to be seen. Jaden had a full set of diamond grillz on his top and bottom teeth, something he has apparently been rocking since June. The look is catching, to say the least, and it along with the cropped pink hair is not the only colour explosion on the Karate Kid star. A tie-dyed blue neckerchief hides what looks like a pink chain with a lock hidden underneath, ensuring your eyes stay transfixed up top.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B3UqScBAKuI/
When you do look beyond the up top, you’ll immediately recognise the Louis Vuitton label on the jacket but what you may not know is that the power suit is designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, the artistic director of Women’s collection for the fashion house. The heeled black shoes are also designed by Nicolas and it is not the first time Jaden has been spotted wearing women’s shoes. In fact, the actor has often spoken about how much he enjoys Louis Vuitton shoes for their durability.
It’s good to see the star smiling as just last month his family held an intervention due to his vegan diet. The 21-year-olds eating habits had left his body looking drained with his skin going grey and dark circles around the eyes. Following the intervention, Jaden now follows a vegetarian diet but claims the main cause of his bad diet was skipping meals.
The star hasn’t been seen on the screen since 2017 when he was in Netflix’s The Get Down but that could be set to change with the release of Life In a Year which he stars in alongside Cara Delevingne and Cuba Gooding Jr.
We are looking forward to see what grillz he wears to that red carpet.

When you think of whisky you probably think of either Scotland or Ireland, the former has its own version of whisky and the latter is home to the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Australia is probably not the country you think of, but a distillery from Tasmania has been slowly changing that attitude. How do you change attitudes? Well if you’re Sullivans Cove Distillery you focus on your product and make great whisky, in fact they hold the record of being the only distillery in the world to have won the World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt twice in a row. As part of their 25th anniversary, the distillery is releasing a recently found barely-legal 21 years aged whisky which will be the oldest ever official distillery release of Australian single malt whisky. It’s certainly offering more to the world at 25 than this author.https://www.instagram.com/p/B3RLAYogTvM/Turns out the latest release by Sullivan Cove happened entirely by accident after a call out of the blue from a Hobart warehouse. The warehouse had discovered four cases of whisky produced by the label prior to 1999 which fortunately when drunk still had a richness and depth to the character. Considering the age and low volume of the casks, the small amount of leftover whisky was married together to yield 500 bottles which according to managing director Adam Sable is incredibly rare to be able to offer.
“When we found these casks, we were thrilled that they still had quality whisky inside. In the Australian climate, it’s very difficult to age whisky for this long without it all evaporating, so it’s a very special thing to be able to offer”
The 49.6% ABV drop is of course presented in a crystal decanter with a label design reflecting the packaging of Sullivans Cove’s first release in the late 1990s. Considering the rarity of the bottle, the $1,800 price tag doesn’t sound too bad. Just remember to add on the price of a plane ticket to Tasmania for it as its only available for sale to members of its mailing list and visitors of the Cellar Door. If you need us we will be on the next flight to Hobart.

We all know how to sink a gin tonic or ten, but when it comes to undoing the weekend’s debauchery, the nation appears misguided (while a Pad Thai and Coke may qualify as ~self-care~ on your Instagram story, it’s not boosting your liver).
To that end, we sought expert nutritional advice to bring you information that won’t have you purchasing snake oil smoothies on the dark web (nor languishing with urine so dark and brooding it looks like it should be doing a philosophy degree).
Of course, the best short term way to cleanse your liver is to provide your body with adequate water. And if you suspect you have any underlying liver issues whatsoever then you should seek professional medical advice.
But if you have a functioning liver which you occasionally neglect; you might be interested in the foods you can eat to show your body some love.
As the Gastroenterology Society of Australia states, “The liver is the body’s ‘detoxifier’… The cells within [which] contain a number of powerful enzymes that break down many toxins or chemicals that can be found in some of the things we eat [or drink].”
“Any alcohol that you consume is processed in the liver… The liver also is the place where any medicines or herbal supplements etc that you take are broken down further.”
With the right meals between your chompers, then, you can more easily flush out foreign chemicals (like the ones you pick up from the environment, processed foods and alcohol).

The latest Australian Dietary Guidelines support this claim, suggesting that a diet rich in fibre sourced from fruit, veggies, and whole-grain, along with small amounts of non-red meat, as well as low-fat dairy and healthy monounsaturated fats (like avocado) should take precedence in your shopping trolley.

Chief among them, Well Good – a wellness news and lifestyle site, who spoke to nutritionist Charles Passler, founder of Pure Change – claims, are eight foods that you should eat “every day.”
Have at ’em.
Garlic
“Eating garlic helps activate the liver detox enzymes,” explains Dr. Passler. Not only that, but garlic also contains 39 different antibacterial agents, making it a smart choice for protecting your cuerpo against illnesses.
“To best make use of this flavor-packed food, opt for organic and fresh garlic whenever possible,” Well Good adds.
So start whipping up that Spanish omelette or salmorejo, asap (or crush up a few extra cloves to add to your next steak marinade).
Betroot
What The Betoota Advocate is for your funny bone, this humble underground veggie is for your hepatic vein. Thanks to betroot’s high antioxidant content and ability to improve exercise performance, not to mention its ability to “activate liver enzymes and [affect] bile, which helps break down and absorb healthy fats and fat-soluble nutrients like vitamin E” (Dr. Passler), beetroot can help your liver “escort” toxins out of your body in bowel movements.
Organic Apples
Who knew ‘slinkies’ were so good for you (apart from Granny Smith?) In other words: apples, which contain mucho fibre, can aid in cleaning out your bowels and introducing friendly bacteria. That’s provided they are organic (the non-organic variety are known to be one of the worst offending fruits for containing pesticides, which gives your liver even more work to do).
Broccoli Sprouts
Broccoli sprouts are “rich in antioxidants and boost up glutathione even better than straight broccoli, which means they support both phases of liver detoxification,” Dr. Passler told Well Good.
Watermelon
What’s not to love? Go for a two-cup serving of watermelon and your bile-buster will thank you (it also helps keep your water-levels up).
Fermented Foods
It turns out Qantas was onto something with their chicken edamame salad: as Dr. Passler points out – if you’ve been feeling bloated or constipated for more than three days, you could maybe use some more fermented foods in your life.
“Kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi – all of these tangy treats introduce gut-friendly bacteria to colonize the intestines and promote healthy elimination,” (Well Good).
Walnuts
Not only are they known to boost your brain, but walnuts are not so shabby in the liver department either.
“First off, walnuts help increase circulation and blood flow so toxins are more efficiently transported from different points in your body to your liver,” Dr. Passler told Well Good.
“So next time you head out for happy hour, make sure you’ve got this walnut crumble on hand for breakfast the morning after – your brain, liver, and taste buds will thank you.”
Avocado
Although it may not technically be vegan avocado is a fibre care-package and healthy fat godsend all in one. This earns it a tick of approval in the Australian Dietary Guidelines, adding a plethora of avo-licious dishes to your next Mexican bonanza.

The Apple Watch has never been much of a bedroom player, it will track you moving and your fitness using its native trackers but never has it had a native tool for tracking your sleep. But that could soon be changing if rumours are to be believed, and soon your bed will have a new occupant in it, although not for a long time.
The theory of the apple watch, particularly the newest generation, Gen 5 joining you in the bedroom is an attractive one. Now you can finally have data to back up your complaints of “having a bad nights sleep” or to track just how much that whisky before bed helps or hinders your sleep. According to The Verge, Apple may soon be launching a native sleep-tracker following the same principles as the phones alarm clock app.
Currently, the phone alarm clock app lets you set a time to wake up and the phone will softly awaken you at an optimal time according to your sleep. It will also tell you when you need to go to bed to get your required hours of sleep, which really just sounds like living back at home with your parents. Love it or hate it, the bedtime schedule alarm could be coming to the watch and bringing with it sleep pattern tracking. The question remaining then is, when do you charge the watch if you’re using it at night?
https://www.instagram.com/p/B3SjNy2AvD1/
Thanks to the watches unique ‘never turn off’ feature your watch requires almost nightly charging. The battery does last for an impressive 18 hours, but if you go to bed at say 10:00pm, early we know, then your watch will die midnight. So you bring your watch to bed with you for a couple of hours and then it just leaves you.
The argument could be made that you would charge your watch when you get up and start getting ready for work. Well, the people able to do that clearly are not the ones doing their early morning F45 class and needing the watch to track that workout. The fitness tracker on the watch is one of the best in the market, so you don’t want to lose that data to get some about sleep. Let’s be honest you’d rather track your fitness and boast about it than be able to talk about your sleep tracker, no good story ever started with “I had a great night’s sleep”.
Now every fitness tracker on the market, be it Apple, Garmin, Fitbit or even the latest one Whoop needs to be charged and most of them require you to take off the watch while you do it. But the other competitors in the market last for a few days, so you can charge it while sitting at your desk. So while a native sleep tracker may be coming to the Apple Watch it may not actually be very useable.
Apple has not yet commented on the issue and it could all just be a rumour, but let’s hope Apple has a charging solution if it does end up launching.

From hosing each other with Rioja to swimming in internationally-acclaimed tomatoes, Spaniards sure know how to party. And that’s before you even get to the pyromaniacal (Las Fallas), ethically dubious (San Fermin) or truly bizarre (Los Escobazos) fiestas that so fascinate and horrify Australian travellers.
Even when you take animal cruelty out of the equation, however, and focus on the ‘lust for life’ festivals like Buñol’s Tomatina or Haro’s Batalla de Vino, a difference in attitude between Spaniards and tourists soon becomes apparent: while Keep Cup carrying exchange students baulk at sending thousands of litres of world-renowned wine (and tomatoes) to the gutter, many Spaniards see it as an investment in community health.
Of course, some tourists are totally on board, and some Spaniards aren’t, but after living in Spain for two years (as well as, more recently, interviewing with Mercado head chef Jason Dean and Campo Viejo global ambassador Federico Lleonart), I have come to the conclusion that Spaniards are – generally speaking – far more skilled at indulging than Australians.
That said, considering the number of hungry people in the world (and in their own barrios), Spain’s world-renowned ability to ‘drink all the wine,’ is still not a good look. Why do they persist then? Bloomberg’s Healthiest Country of 2019 rankings, where Spain now sits at numero uno, as well as one iconic photo from the Haro Wine Fight (in the Rioja region) may hold the answer.
Although wasting tonnes of food and wine is not a good look, from Spain’s position in the quality (and length) of life rankings (and how enamoured tourists tend to find themselves at these festivals), it appears more effective than the 4.2 trillion wellness Crossfit and Kombucha industry which is being embraced by countries like Australia and America, all of which could similarly be going to help people in need.
When you consider all of this, the ‘optics’ of slapping around a bit of wine improves considerably.
To get the down-low on this phenomenon, D’Marge spoke to Jason Dean, head chef of Mercado, one of Sydney’s finest Spanish restaurants, and Campo Viejo global ambassador Federico Lleonart, to gauge their opinion on the subtle art of excess.
Is Spain’s penchant for gluttony greatly exaggerated? Vastly unappreciated? Supremely wasteful? Or the key to a long and happy life? Here’s what they had to say.
First things first: head chef Jason Dean told us that – despite Australia and America’s ingrained fear of excess (and animal fat) – the Spanish diet of tongue curling jamon and bottomless tempranillo is not as unhealthy as you think (this is also backed up by a 20-year-old essay by Anthony Bourdain).
“The pigs are fed on acorns for such a long time, so they’ve actually got a lot of olive oil in the fat so it’s actually considered to be quite healthy.”
“Most charcuterie is on the leaner side of fats as well,” Jason added. “You can only get a sort of 10% fat margin in a sausage so they are quite high in protein: I don’t think they are super unhealthy.”
As for the wine: although they drink it a lot more frequently than Aussies, Brits or Americans, Campo Viejo global ambassador Federico Lleonart told us that Spaniards tend to drink more in moderation.
So while in Australia we go from Dry July to Daquiri December, Spaniards treat life more like a marathon – and drink accordingly.
Head chef Jason also says there are a number of food skills that come into facilitating this lengthly life, particularly when it comes to sourcing fresh produce: “I love the [Spanish] style of grazing and eating – it’s all about produce really.”
“Spend time making a beautiful product and then let it speak for itself.”
Rather than overcomplicating it, Spain is great at “letting the beauty come through in the product,” Jason told us, as well as keeping things “super fresh and seasonal,” which is not only good for your palette and the environment, but “allows the customer to order five or six different plates, which is a more exciting way to dine.”
The beauty of this, Jason said, is that as long as you choose a food which is particular to a region, “you don’t need to do anything apart from open a tine of anchovies [for example], and they are so nice you don’t need to create a dish from it.”
“It’s the same with the Jamon Iberico – people spend their whole life making this one product and then it speaks for itself.”
Campo Viejo global ambassador Federico Lleonart adds that the “easy-going” Spanish way also contributes to their long and healthy lives, telling us; “people really enjoy going out and sharing with friends.”
“There is always a meeting where a glass of wine is involved. You go to a tapas bar and of course you always enjoy a glass of wine. And so that part of being very social and very spontaneous is [something] Campo Viejo lives by,” Federico told us.
“The quality of life in Spain is very good.”
He then added, “I read an article recently that said Spain is the world’s healthiest nation and I think it’s the combination of lifestyle and diet. They say the Mediterranean diet is very healthy. It’s a great banner of what we eat.”
“The people in Spain are not obsessed with eating [or avoiding] fat or carbs, it’s basically a good combination of a lot of fish with a lot of fresh vegetables. Another important part of living longer is having a healthy social life and sharing with friends. Everything without excess.”
Ready to embrace the art of indulgence? Ready that glass of Campo Viejo…
