The White Lotus season 1 laughed all the way to the bank with its subtle humour and crude stereotypes. Season 2 is no different; except this time we’re switching shakas for sunglasses; aloha for la dolce vita; Hawaii for Italy…
The White Lotus trades in tropes. And though it exaggerates, sometimes bordering on Emily In Paris levels of absurdity, it still holds a few lessons that tourists heading to Italy can learn from. We thought we’d collate a few of them for you below.
Italian hotel staff are not as sycophantic as American hotel staff…but maybe that’s a good thing
A scene at the start of The White Lotus season 2 shows this off quite well.
“I’m impressed that you’re even here,” Valentina the resort manager asks one of the more elderly guests. “Why are you impressed?” he responds.
“It’s a long trip from Los Angeles, and you are quite old, no?”
Classic.
Italian hotel staff are not as careful with your ego as American hotel staff

When another couple of guests, upon arriving at The White Lotus in Sicily, were asked: “How was your flight,” by Valentina, one of the two replied: “It was fine, although they did lose Cameron’s bag in Rome.”
Valentina replied: “Oh, never transfer through Rome. Fiumicino (airport) always loses bags. She then finished, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, “You should have flown through Munich.”
“Thanks for the tip.”
“Yeah, next time.”
“You’re welcome.”
“If your bag will ever arrive we’ll let you know right away… If you believe in miracles.”
Yet another classic. Though this is obviously exaggerated for comic effect, after visiting America recently, I reckon there’s something to it…
Always pack important possessions in your carry on
Think: swimming trunks, sunglasses, etc.
If you value your luggage, don’t fly through Rome in peak season
I can’t quantify this one with statistics, but it sounds about right…
Flying to a beautiful location won’t solve your family or relationship problems
If The White Lotus is anything to go by, it could actually make them worse.

You don’t need to bring so many bags
As one Sicilian local in the series puts it, upon seeing Jennifer Coolidge (Tanya) arrive at the hotel, “That’s a lot of fucking bags.”
“Maybe she’s moving to Italy.”
Take staff advice

“Shall I show you how to close the curtains? There’s a button,” one of the hotel staff asks one of the characters in The White Lotus season 2.
“We’ll figure it out,” the guest responds.
Though I’ve only watched season 1, I have a feeling this guest (who at the end of the first episode is revealed to have secretly hired an escort) will end up wishing he took the staff member’s advice when he had the chance…
Even when in Italy, opposites can still attract
Though nothing has happened yet (as of the end of episode 1) the tension between Harper Spiller and her partner’s obnoxious friend Cameron Babcock (who she initially hates) is palpable.

Always be ready to drink a glass of Prosecco, even on an empty stomach
We’ve no idea how true this one really is, but it sounds about right…
Watching obnoxious guests and beleaguered staff will never not be funny
This one isn’t so much a lesson for tourists so much as one for the streaming executives to pay attention to, but we thought we’d throw it in there anyway: from Fawlty Towers to The White Lotus, it seems placing a hotel manager with great disdain for their guests, and obnoxious guests alongside one another always makes for entertaining results.

The post The White Lotus Season 2 Has A Brutal Lesson For Tourists In Italy appeared first on DMARGE Australia.
Despite the miserable Sydney weather, our inaugural DMARGE House event on Wednesday 5th of October was a packed house.
Hosted by Matthew Johnson, over 180 people descended on Ovolo Hotel in Sydney to listen to 15 leading entrepreneurs and captains of industry. These thought-leaders included The Bachelor’s Sam Wood, surfboard designer Hayden Cox, and Chris and Cam Grant, founders of off-grid cabin firm Unyoked.
Bushmills Whiskey cocktails were flowing all day from the bar, readers got the chance to get up close and personal with Swiss watchmaking with IWC Schaffhausen, and it was an amazing chance to network and to say g’day after two years of The Big Sick and no events.
DMARGE also launched key insights from its second Men’s Matters study, which in partnership with Hoop Research, investigated how the cost of living crisis is impacting Australian men.
Key insights from the latest Men’s Matters study included:
- 75% of Australian men are worried about the cost of living
- 57% of Australian men are worried about their financial future (with 30-40 year old’s being the most affected, and Sydneysiders being the worst)
- 40% of Australian men are worried they will never own their own home
- Only a fraction of Australian men are topping up their superannuation
- Gambling, drugs and luxury goods will be the first vices Australian men give up when “shit hits the fan”

These insights were unveiled at DMARGE House during a cost of living panel discussion between DMARGE founder Luc Wiesman, Man Anchor founder Steven Gamble, Man Coach Mike Campbell and writer/strategist Noelle Faulkner. During the chat, the panel discussed how the increasing cost of living is impacting Australian men’s health and wellness.
During the discussion, the panel talked about the fact that – as discovered in DMARGE’s Men’s Matter’s survey – men are under more financial stress now than they were before the pandemic and the fact that shares and crypto are the largest areas of investment for Australian men (with superannuation often being neglected).

What does this mean for brands? Firstly: there is a huge gap in the market for sensible, long-term investment advice and education platforms (and share trading applications with a culture of maturity around them).
Secondly, we learned that Australian men are more open than ever to expert-led advice when it comes to their physical, mental and financial health – they just need brands and publishers to come to the party so that they are not forced to resort to some obscure Reddit page or Facebook group to get advice and a sense of community.
As DMARGE founder Luc Wiesman explained, there has been a surprising shift away from the classic Aussie “she’ll be right” mentality. Mr Wiesman said: “Almost ¾ of men admit that they’re worried about their financial future and the cost of living.”

Set in the 1970s, Ron Burgundy, played by Ferrell, is San Diego’s top anchorman but things change when Veronica Corningstone, played by Applegate, comes to town wanting to be the first female news anchor.
If you like Frat Pack films such as Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers, Zoolander, and Blades of Glory, or simply having a good laugh at ridiculous comedies, you’ll love Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Babel

7.5 IMDb score, stars Brad Pitt & Cate Blanchett, Drama, released in 2006
Babel follows four interlocking stories involving a married couple on vacation (Pitt & Blanchett), two goatherds, a deaf teen and her father, and a nanny taking the children she looks after across an international border…
Extremely well-acted and visually stunning, Babel is a must-watch for fans of drama films.
Blood Diamond

8.0 IMDb score, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Drama & Thriller, released in 2006
Blood Diamond follows the unlikely team-up of a smuggler, fisherman and American journalist in pursuit of an ultra-rare pink diamond. Set during the Sierra Leone Civil War in 1999, DiCaprio earned a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for playing the Rhodesian smuggler and mercenary, Danny Archer.
If you liked the films The Hurt Locker and American Sniper, you’ll highly enjoy Blood Diamond.
Buried

7.0 IMDb score, stars Ryan Reynolds, Drama, Mystery & Thriller, released in 2010
Reynolds is well known for his comedy chops but the actor also excels in serious roles. In Buried, Reynolds plays a US truck driver who is buried alive inside a coffin and must find a way to escape.
Clever and thrilling, Buried is a definite must-watch as it’ll have you on the edge of your seat right up until the credits roll.
Casino Royale

8.0 IMDb score, stars Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright & Mads Mikkelsen, Action, Adventure & Thriller, released in 2006
Considered as one of the (if not the best) James Bond films of all time; if you haven’t seen Casino Royale with the blonde Bond, Daniel Craig – what have you been doing with your life? In all seriousness, Casino Royale follows Bond as he sets out on his first mission since he gained ‘007’ status.
A much more grounded take on Bond. James Bond. that’s got it all – a good plot, great acting and thrilling action. What more could you want?
Crazy, Stupid, Love

7.4 IMDb score, stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore & Emma Stone, Comedy, Drama & Romance, released in 2011
When Cal’s wife asks him for a divorce, he quickly becomes friends with a young bachelor, Jacob, who teaches Cal how to pick up women and navigate the single scene. Crazy, Stupid, Love is genuinely funny but also has some touching moments; plus, the story is very intricate and well-written and the acting is superb.
If you’re wanting a lighthearted film Crazy, Stupid, Love is for you.
Days of Thunder

6.1 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman, Action & Drama, released in 1990
The film that first brought Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman together, Days of Thunder follows Cole Trickle, played by Cruise, a young hot-tempered racing driver who enters the NASCAR Cup series. The film’s plot isn’t overly nuanced; in fact, it’s quite basic but the incredible action and racing scenes more than make up for it.
If you love cars and action films and want to watch a film that doesn’t require too much brainpower, Days of Thunder is the film for you.
Death At A Funeral

7.3 IMDb score, stars Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Dinklage & Ewen Bremner, Comedy, released in 2007
When a mysterious dwarf turns up to Daniel’s late father’s funeral nothing but chaos ensues as no one seems to know who the dwarf is or how he would have known the deceased; and as it turns out the dwarf wishes to expose a dark secret about Daniel’s father to the entire family.
Dinklage – as always – really shines in this hilariously dark film. If you’re a fan of classic British humour, you have to watch Death At A Funeral.
Donnie Darko

8.0 IMDb score, stars Jake Gyllenhaal & Jena Malone, Drama, Mystery & Sci-Fi, released in 2001
Donnie Darko, a troubled teen, starts having visions of a demonic-looking rabbit named Frank who tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days and convinces him to commit a series of crimes. Be warned, Donnie Darko is a weird film; but in the best way possible.
With an intriguing plot and great performances, you’ll enjoy Donnie Darko if you’re a fan of cult classics.
Election

7.3 IMDb score, stars Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon & Chris Klein, Comedy, released in 1999

Chaos (and hilarity) ensues.
Election is a brilliant and intelligent dark comedy with phenomenal performances from both Broderick and a young Witherspoon.
Ex Machina

7.7 IMDb score, stars Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson & Oscar Issac, Drama & Sci-Fi, released in 2014
Ex Machina follows an employee at a high-tech company who wins the chance to interact with a highly advanced human-looking android that was built by the company’s CEO. The android, Ava, has been equipped with artificial intelligence and you’ll spend the whole movie not knowing who to trust. Thrilling and face-paced, Ex Machina is truly a brilliant film.
Whether you’re fascinated by the idea of artificial intelligence or are terrified by it, Ex Machina explores the concept so well that you have to give it a viewing.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

7.8 IMDb score, stars Matthew Broderick, directed by John Hughes, Comedy, released in 1986
Young Ferris Bueller, played by Broderick, is a popular teen who is incredibly skilled at cutting class and getting away with it. Before he graduates high school he decides to have one final last day off from school and the film follows the hilarious awesome day Bueller has while his principal is hot on his tail.
There’s a reason this film is considered a cult classic; it’s charming, clever, and genuinely funny. If you want to watch an extremely enjoyable film, you have to go with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The Fugitive

7.8 IMDb score, stars Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones & Sela Ward, Action, Crime & Drama, released in 1993
Ford stars as Dr Richard Kimble, an innocent man who’s been wrongfully accused of murdering his wife. And the film follows Kimble as he hurries to find the real killer while he’s simultaneously being hunted down by a veteran U.S. Marshal – played by Jones.
Intense and gripping, if you’re after an action-thriller, it doesn’t get much better than The Fugitive.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

7.8 IMDb score, Crime, Drama & Mystery, released in 2009
Based on the book of the same name, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo follows disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist as he tries to solve a cold case with the help of a talented young hacker, Lisbeth Salander. The film is captivating and thrilling, and the entire murder mystery is extremely well-written, but there are some graphic and gritty moments that may be too much for some.
If you enjoy dark but clever crime films, you have to watch The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well as its two sequels, which are also available on Stan.
Goldfinger

7.7 IMDb score, stars Sean Connery, Action & Adventure, released in 1964
Considered one of the best James Bond films, Goldfinger is a classic must-watch. Connery’s Bond is charming and suave, and Goldfinger’s plot is thrilling with enthralling action sequences and touches of tongue-in-cheek humour. Plus, it was the first Bond film that had the 007 spy utter the famous line “martini; shaken, not stirred”.
However, if you prefer Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, or George Lazenby as Bond, Stan has all of the James Bond films available.
Horrible Bosses

6.8 IMDb score, stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston & Jamie Foxx, Comedy, released in 2011
Three friends, played by Bateman, Day & Sudeikis, all have horrible bosses (hence the film’s title) and as none of them can quit for financial reasons, they conspire to murder each other’s bosses. This film is hilarious with many laugh-out-loud moments and is arguably Aniston’s best role to date.
If you’re after a good laugh, you have to watch Horrible Bosses as it’s a comedy with a well-written plot and fantastic performances from all of the actors involved.
Inception

8.8 IMDb score, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard & Michael Caine, directed by Christopher Nolan, Action, Sci-Fi & Thriller, released in 2010
A skilled man who can steal secrets from people’s dreams is given an impossible task that will give him the redemption he desperately seeks: implant an idea into someone’s subconscious. Inception is considered one of the best films of all time due to its fresh yet brilliant multi-faceted plot, breathtaking cinematography, and impeccable acting performances.
If you haven’t already seen Inception, you must watch it immediately; and if you have seen it… watch it again. You’re guaranteed to pick up on things you didn’t the first time round.

If you’re after a heartwarming film, The King’s Speech is the perfect film for you.
Layer Cake

7.3 IMDb score, stars Daniel Craig, Sienna Miller, Michael Gambon & Tom Hardy, Action, Crime & Drama, released in 2004
Before Craig was James Bond, he starred in this film as a successful but unnamed cocaine dealer who is about to enjoy an early retirement. However, right before he does so, a powerful mobster demands he complete two rather tough assignments…
Craig’s performance is excellent and the film was directed by Matthew Vaughn – the man who directed Kick-Ass and the Kingsman films – making Layer Cake a must-watch.
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels

8.2 IMDb score, stars Jason Statham, directed by Guy Ritchie, Action, Comedy & Crime, released in 1998
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels was the film that gave Guy Ritchie international acclaim and made former-diver Jason Statham (yes, seriously; he even competed for England at the Commonwealth Games) an action movie star. The film is constantly described as a British twist on a classic Quentin Tarantino gangster film.
You have to watch Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels if you’re a fan of Tarantino or if you simply enjoy films involving heists and crime-orientated plots.
Mad Max

6.9 IMDb score, stars Mel Gibson, Action, Adventure & Sci-Fi, released in 1979
Set in post-apocalyptic Australia, a police officer sets out to stop a vicious biker gang after they murder his wife and son. A superb screenplay written by Tina Fey paired with excellent performances from the ensemble cast is what made Mean Girls an instant classic. The film follows Cady, played by Lohan, a teenager who’s spent her whole life being home-schooled, as she goes to high school for the first time and somehow befriends the cool yet evil girls named ‘The Plastics’.
Mean Girls is filled with quotable dialogue and non-stop funny moments and is a comedy that you can watch over and over again.
Minority Report

7.6 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Colin Ferrell & Samantha Morton, directed by Steven Spielberg, Action, Crime & Mystery, released in 2002

Farmer’s Daughters

From the ‘Paddock to plate’, Farmer’s Daughters curates a memorable dining experience, as this iconic Melbourne restaurant celebrates the fantastic fresh produce coming out of Gippsland, Victoria.
The founder of Famer’s Daughters, Peruvian chef Alejandro Saravia, first fell in love with Gippsland in 2016 when he went on a tour there and was instantly taken back by the region’s food quality and biodiversity. This led him to become an ambassador for the area and launch Farmer’s Daughters earlier this year – and we’re so grateful he did.
“What a fantastic new addition to the Melbourne restaurant scene. Karla took great care of us and was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu”

Al Dente Enoteca
161-163 Nicholson St, Carlton VIC 3053

In April of 2020, Italian pasta chef Andrea Vignali launched her very own restaurant in Melbourne, Al Dente Enoteca, amid the global pandemic. This restaurant initially began as a delivery service solely providing pasta dishes to Melbournians stuck in lockdown; however, this little passion project of Vignail’s was immensely popular, leading to the opening of Al Dente Enoteca.

It’s been over a year since No Time to Die hit cinemas and we’re still no closer to finding out who will be taking over the mantle of James Bond from Daniel Craig – but Eddie Redmayne’s latest could be a bit of a sign…
The talented 40-year-old English actor, who is best known for playing protagonist Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts film series, has been spotted wearing an OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M (ref. 215.30.44.21.03) while out and about promoting his latest film, the true crime drama The Good Nurse.
What’s particularly interesting about the watch is that he’s been wearing it with a black and grey NATO strap from OMEGA’s 007 collection of watches and accessories. Then, when you consider that the Planet Ocean is also officially a ‘Bond watch’… Maybe it’s a hint that he’s eyeing the coveted role?
While the OMEGA watch that’s most associated with James Bond is the Seamaster Diver 300M, which was the first OMEGA to be seen in a Bond film and was worn by both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, Craig also wore a black Planet Ocean in both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
One of OMEGA’s beefiest and sportiest dive watches, the Planet Ocean is water-resistant to an impressive 600 metres, boasts a helium-escape valve at 10 o’clock like the Seamaster Diver 300M and its in-house Master Chronometer calibre 8900 can be admired through a transparent caseback. It’s the perfect watch for a man of action like James Bond.

Of course, this is just speculation. Redmayne is an OMEGA ambassador after all, so it could just be that he’s wearing the watch as a contractual obligation and that he likes that Bond NATO strap on his blue Planet Ocean.
Redmayne has also previously suggested that he wouldn’t want to take up the mantle of the famous fictional spy, telling Variety back in 2016 “I would hate to see myself play James Bond. I love going to see James Bond and seeing really freaking cool actors that I admire doing great things. Never say never, but… No.” Talk about mixed signals.

2016 was a long time ago, however, and there’s also form for Bond actors coming out and denying their appearances in Bond films only to renege and appear: Christoph Waltz, who played Bond’s nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Spectre, originally announced in 2017 that he would not reprise his role in No Time to Die – only to surprise fans by appearing in the film’s trailer in 2019 and then in its final release in 2021.
Our take? We reckon there’s still a good chance Redmayne might end up as Bond. We’ll be keeping an extra close eye on his wrist in any case.
Watch our guide to the best James Bond watches of all time below.

Bondi isn’t just the natural landing post for backpackers and those who want to “find themselves”, and can’t be bothered moving to Byron Bay. Bondi is, in fact, the perfect beachside suburb for a spot of drinking, and is home to its fair share of pubs.
Sure, you might be more inclined to visit a bar to enjoy a cocktail or wine whilst overlooking the ocean, but these Bondi pubs offer atmosphere, a great selection of food and drink and the perfect informal setting to catch up with mates or perhaps even take someone on a date.
If you’re looking for pubs further afield than Bondi, then check out our round-up of the best pubs in Sydney.
In this Bondi pubs story…
Looking for some more of the best pubs in Sydney?
The Royal Bondi
238 Bondi Road, Bondi, 2026

This Merivale-owned Bondi pub takes the heritage vibes you’d expect from your local watering hole but gives it a decidedly Bondi twist. Think DJs on Sunday afternoons to provide a soundtrack to your Sunday session, but in a building that has been serving drinks to locals since 1907.
Whilst The Royal Bondi pub now serves a selection of cocktails, the front bar is still very much a spot where locals will feel comfortable. Tradie-favourite beers such as Furphy and Hahn Super Dry are available on tap, and there’s even a vending machine dispensing tinned brews from nearby Young Henry’s brewery in Newtown.
Other classic pub must-haves are taken care of, such as pool tables and jukeboxes, making The Royal the perfect Bondi pub to head to any day of the week. Just remember, due to The Royal’s central, corner location, parking isn’t the easiest to find. So if you can walk there, it’s highly recommended.
Beach Road Hotel
71 Beach Road, Bondi Beach, 2026

One of the most famous and most-visited pubs in Bondi is Beach Road Hotel. A large venue, Beach Road Hotel offers locals and visitors alike a number of different spots to sink a beer or savour a glass of wine. Whether it’s the large main bar area on the ground floor, the sun-drenched courtyard out the back, an upstairs bar where you’ll find some live music or a smaller, back bar on the upper level for more intimtate drinking and dining.
Wherever you manage to find a table, it’s standard pub fare when it comes to both drinks and food. A huge selection of beer is available on tap to keep even the fussiest craft beer drinker happy, while the kitchen churns out pub favourites such as burgers, steaks and pasta. Be sure to check the pub’s website for the latest live music bookings (it’s usually DJs).
If you’re new to Bondi and want to know the best place to grab and a drink and soak up the local atmosphere, Beach Road Hotel is the place to be.
Hotel Ravesis
118 Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach, 2026

Hotel Ravesis is one of the most iconic buildings in the whole of Bondi. Built in 1914 but undergoing a major renovation in the lead up to its 2016 reopening, Ravesis is now unmistakably inspired by the Art Deco of Miami. You’ll want to ensure you nab a table on the upstairs balcony to enjoy one of the best views from any Bondi pub, although the downstairs main bar is still a perfect spot to enjoy a couple of afternoon or weekend beers.
Owing to its coastal location, Ravesis’ food menu draws inspiration from the Mediterranean, with seafood being the main draw. This also makes Ravesis the perfect Bondi pub to host all manner of events. And, if you really want to take in the full experience, you can book one of the upstairs rooms for an overnight stay.
Charing Cross Hotel
81 Carrington Road, Waverly, 2024

Not quite in Bondi itself but just a stone’s throw away in neighbouring Bronte, Charing Cross Hotel is a pub that is certainly worth the short journey. Steeped in history and with a huge selection of beers and wines on offer to all who step through the doors, combined with a cocktail lounge, beer garden and even TAB facilities, there’s no reason not to visit.
Sunday roasts, sports on TV and even some accomodation upstairs complete the appeal of this much-loved Bondi pub.
Hotel Bondi
178 Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach, 2026

Situated literally metres from the beach, Hotel Bondi is the epitome of beachside pub beers. With a laidback atmosphere you’ll notice as soon as you step inside, this Bondi pub is one that should go to the top of your to-do list. Hotel Bondi offers customers a generous beer garden overlooking the beach, a great selection of beers on tap and if you fancy something a little bit extra, you can head on through to the Curlewis bar for cocktails. If you find you’ve had one too many to get home, there are a number of decadent rooms upstairs for you to spend the night.

This consequently leaves all three strapped for cash in their old age, and so, desperate to provide for their retirement plans and families, they hatch a plan to rob the bank for the pension money that’s rightfully theirs. Four men go to Vegas for a bachelor party but in the morning the groom-to-be is missing and the remaining three men have no memory of the previous night. Many hi-jinx ensue as the men try to remember what happened and try to find their missing friend.
While some of the jokes haven’t aged well, The Hangover still has some hilarious moments and remains one of the best comedy movies on Netflix. It’s definitely one of those movies that you can watch over and over again; especially if you’re in the mood for a film that’s not so serious.
Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz follows Nicholas Angel, a skilled London police officer who is transferred to the small, quiet town of Sandford because his brilliance makes the rest of the force look bad. Angel is paired with oafish Danny Butterman and the two clash when people from Sandford start turning up dead.

Hustle follows Sandler’s character, Stanley Sugerman – a pro basketball scout who gets fired. However, after seeing Bo Cruz, a Spanish amateur baller, play, Stanley makes it his mission to get Bo into the NBA. The plot is simple but compelling, especially for those who love basketball.
Plus, Sandler’s performance is next-level; many believe the actor should be nominated for an Oscar because of his performance in Hustle.

A legendary assassin, named John Wick, comes out of retirement when his dog — a gift from his late wife — is killed by a mobster. One of the best and, to be honest, more original action movies to be released in recent years, John Wick is filled with violence. But unlike most films that focus on hitmen and mobsters, it’s not just bloody gore with no substance or plot. The characters in this film are nuanced and three-dimensional; especially John Wick himself, thanks to both excellent writing and Keanu Reeve’s flawless performance.
With some seriously sublime fight scene choreography and a clever story, John Wick is one of the best movies on Netflix right now. Better still, you can also watch the second and third John Wick movies on Netflix, to prepare yourself for John Wick: Chapter 4.
Joker

IMDb rating: 8.4
Director: Todd Phillips
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Released: 2019
This gritty and grounded film explores the origin story behind Batman’s most famous nemesis, the Joker. With an Oscar-winning performance from Phoenix, stunning cinematography and a plot that leaves you feeling conflicted – the Joker does terrible things near the end of the film but you can kind of empathize with why he does them – this is one hell of a film.
If you’re a fan of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, you’ll love Joker.
Kindergarten Cop

IMDb rating: 6.2 IMDb score
Director: Ivan Reitman
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed
Genre: Action, Comedy & Crime
Released: 1990
Kindergarten Cop is a classic Arnie movie – goofy but with some genuinely funny moments (“it’s not a tumour”) and a super simple plot; in an attempt to bust a drug kingpin, an LAPD detective goes undercover as a substitute kindergarten teacher. Is this movie the best and most cleverest movie of all time? No.
But it’s enjoyable and easy to watch; perfect to put on after a busy day as it’ll help you unwind.
King Richard

IMDb rating: 7.5
Director: Reinaldo Marcus Green
Starring: Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal
Genre: Biography, Drama & Sport
Released: 2021
Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in King Richard, you know, moments after he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards’ 94th ceremony… But hey, the film is extremely good.
Based on a true story, Smith plays Richard Williams and the story focuses on how he coached his two daughters Venus and Serena in tennis.
Knives Out

IMDb rating: 7.9
Director: Rian Johnson
Starring: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette
Genre: Comedy, Crime
Released: 2019
The only way to describe Knives Out is clever. Within the first ten minutes, you’ll think you’ve figured the whole murder mystery out, even before Daniel Craig’s character Benoit Blanc. But then the rug is pulled out from under you and you’ll be so engrossed in this witty comedy trying to figure out the puzzle. Enjoyable, compelling and refreshingly original – plus every member of the stellar ensemble cast is on their A-game acting-wise – makes Knives Out one of the best movies on Netflix Australia.
Knives Out is arguably better written than an Agatha Christie novel and is a movie you have to see at least once before you die.
And, while Knives Out will have no relation with the sequel Knives Out 2 – which we expect to be released later in 2022 – it will see Daniel Craig reprise his role to solve an entirely new mystery.
The Lincoln Lawyer

IMDb rating: 7.3 IMDb score
Director: Brad Furman
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe
Genre: Crime, Drama & Mystery
Released: 2011
McConaughey stars as Mick Haller, a defence lawyer working in Lincoln, who is asked to defend a wealthy playboy who’s been accused of assaulting a prostitute. However, when Haller discovers his client might be guilty of more than just this one crime, things turn sinister…
McConaughey turns in a great performance in The Lincoln Lawyer – which is compelling and definitely worth adding to your watch list.
Meet The Parents

IMDb rating: 7.0
Director: Jay Roach
Starring: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson
Genre: Comedy
Released: 2000
When male nurse Greg Focker, played by Stiller decides he wants to propose to his girlfriend, he seeks the permission of her father, Jack Byrnes. However, Jack, played by De Niro, takes an instant disliking to Greg and hilarity ensues.
With fantastic ‘awkward’ comedy that Stiller excels at and De Niro’s impressive performance, Meet The Parents is one of the best Netflix movies to watch if you’re in the mood to laugh.
Mirage

IMDb rating: 7.4
Director: Oriol Paulo
Starring: Álbaro Morte, Adriana Ugarte, Chino Darín
Genre: Drama, Mystery
Released: 2018
This incredible film explores time travel themes and a compelling mystery. Mirage is a foreign film hailing from Spain and if you’ve watched Money Heist, you’ll recognise Álvaro Morte, who plays The Professor. Mirage centres on a 72-hour electrical storm that occurs in both 1989 and 2014. The main character Vera, whose present is 2014, seems to be able to save a boy from death in ‘89. However, preventing his death has terrible consequences for Vera.
Filled with suspense and intrigue, if you liked The Butterfly Effect, Mirage explores very similar themes in a very clever and emotional way. A must-watch Netflix movie.
Moneyball

IMDb rating: 7.6
Director: Bennett Miller
Starring: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill
Genre: Biography, Drama, Sport
Released: 2011
Moneyball follows the Oakland Athletics baseball team’s 2002 season and how their general manager Billy Beane attempted to assemble a competitive team based on statistics. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and is critically acclaimed for its story, direction and acting; particularly the performances of Pitt and Hill. It’s easily one of the best movies to stream on Netflix Australia.
If you liked The Big Short, The Blind Side or Ford v Ferrari, you’ll love Moneyball.
The Nice Guys

IMDb rating: 7.3 IMDb score
Director: Shane Black
Starring: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling
Genre: Action, Comedy & Crime
Released: 2016
Set in the 1970s, The Nice Guys follows two private eyes – played by Crowe and Gosling – who are forced to team up to investigate the apparent suicide of a porn star and the disappearance of a young woman. Fun and entertaining, The Nice Guys is an action-packed comedy.
If you love classic buddy cop films, The Nice Guys is for you.
Ocean’s Eleven

IMDb rating: 7.7
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Andy García, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould
Genre: Crime, Comedy, Thriller
Released: 2001
With one of the greatest ensemble casts to ever appear on screen, Ocean’s Elevel is an excellently executed heist film. It follows Danny Ocean, played by Clooney, as he recruits a team to pull off the most elaborate heist of all time. There isn’t a single weak link, in terms of performance, in the stellar ensemble cast and even though you may know how everything comes together at the end, it doesn’t stop you from watching it over and over again.
Whether you’ve seen it or not, you better add Ocean’s Eleven to your must-watch Netflix Australia movies list.
Paddleton

IMDb rating: 7.2
Director: Alex Lehmann
Starring: Christine Woods, Mark Duplass, Ray Romano
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Released: 2019
Paddleton follows best friends, Michael and Andy, as they deal with Michael’s terminal cancer diagnosis. Michael wants to kill himself and embarks on a road trip to a pharmacy that’ll provide him with the appropriate medication to do so. Andy agrees to go on the road trip too in the hopes that he can convince Michael to fight the cancer.
Beautifully written with great performances, the only way to describe Paddleton is as a sad comedy that accurately portrays male friendship. You have to add this one to your Netflix movie ‘watch list’.
Rush

IMDb rating: 8.1
Director: Ron Howard
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde
Genre: Action, Drama, Biography
Released: 2013
Based on a true story, Rush follows the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Set in the 1970s, Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl both give brilliant performances as the F1 foes, Hunt and Lauda, while award-winning director Ron Howard has supplied the film with breathtaking racing sequences. The ever-brilliant Hans Zimmer provides a scintillating soundtrack, too.
If you’re a fan of the Grand Prix or just love a good sports-action film, then Rush is one of the best movies on Netflix to oblige.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

IMDb rating: 8.4 IMDb score
Directors: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Starring: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld
Genre: Animation, Action & Adventure
Released: 2018
This film is seriously one of, if not the best Spider-Man films of all time. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows teenager Miles Morales and reveals how he became Spider-Man. Miles must then team up with other spider-powered individuals from other dimensions – Peter B. Parker’s Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker, Spider-Ham & Spider-Man Noir – to defeat an enemy that threatens them all.
Visually stunning and extremely entertaining, if you love the MCU or comic book films in general, you simply must watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; especially before its sequel is released!
The Town

IMDb rating: 7.5
Director: Ben Affleck
Starring: Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Released: 2010
A proficient group of bank robbers, due to extenuating circumstances, are forced to take the bank’s assistant manager, Claire hostage during a robbery. In the aftermath of the theft (which was successful) one of the robbers starts a friendship with her to ensure she didn’t see anything incriminating during the robbery and hasn’t told the FBI anything of importance.
However, things get complicated when he begins falling in love with Claire. The Town is a great character-driven thriller with stellar performances from the cast; especially Renner and Affleck. You have to add this to your Netflix must-watch list.
The Trial Of The Chicago 7

IMDb rating: 7.7
Director: Aaron Sorkin
Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton
Genre: Drama, History & Thriller
Released: 2020
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is based on one of the most notorious trials in recent history; in Chicago 1968, a peaceful protest at the Democratic National Convention turned violent, which led to the organisers of the event being charged with conspiracy to incite a riot by the hostile Nixon administration.
The film is an incredible courtroom drama and every single member of the cast turns in a powerful performance.
Two Hands

IMDb rating: 7.1
Director: Gregor Jordan
Starring: Heath Ledger, Rose Byrne
Genre: Comedy, Crime, Thriller
Released: 1999
Two Hands was the last Australian film Heath Ledger was involved with before his breakthrough role in 10 Things I Hate About You gained him international fame. Ledger plays Jimmy, a nineteen-year-old who unwittingly gets himself into major debt with a local gangster. To pay off his debt, Jimmy decides to rob a bank. A young Rose Byrne, well before her successful Hollywood acting career took off, plays Ledger’s love interest.
A quirky dark comedy, Two Hands is like an Australian version of Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It’s easily one of the best Australian movies on Netflix Australia.
The Wolf Of Wall Street

IMDb rating: 8.2
Director: Martin Scorcese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey
Genre: Crime, Comedy, Biography
Released: 2013
The Wolf Of Wall Street is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort. Set in the late 80s and early 90s, the film centres around Belfort, played by DiCaprio, starting his own brokerage firm and then defrauding wealthy investors out of millions of dollars. Entertaining, raunchy, and exquisitely stylistic, there’s a reason your mates constantly bring up how good The Wolf Of Wall Street is.
If you’ve somehow never seen this movie, do so immediately; otherwise, The Wolf Of Wall Street is always a good movie choice if you’re in the mood for a re-watch. One of the best movies on Netflix, without a doubt.
1917

IMDb rating: 8.3
Director: Sam Mendes
Starring: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth
Genre: Action, Drama, War
Released: 2019
As the film’s title suggests, 1917 is set in April 1917 and follows two British soldiers as they embark to deliver an urgent message… If their message is not received on time, 1600 men will be killed but the journey to achieve this mission is extremely dangerous.
With great visuals and an interesting plot, 1917 is one of the best war movies on Netflix Australia.

The rumour mill is currently shrieking like the Camp Nou after a bad tackle, as American team Inter Miami are reportedly expecting to sign Lionel Messi and hope to complete a deal in the next few months, despite PSG fishing for a renewal and Barcelona nipping at everyone’s heels with interest (they’ve got an emotional hook but precious little in the piggy bank). As for me, if Messi goes to Inter Miami, football is finished. Finito. Dead to me. Here’s why.
I’m not a Barcelona fan. But I still know Lionel Messi going to Inter Miami would be a tragedy. And in the wake of the news that the MLS team are hoping to sign the (diminutive) Argentine giant (news Bleacher Report says was broken by The Athletic journalist David Ornstein), I’m feeling like Jerome Boateng after the 2015 UCL semifinal (read: not good).
Now, before you tell me it would be “good for the game” or “make economic sense” for Messi to do a (reverse?) David Beckham, just look at what the move to America did to the iconic British number 7. Not that it totally ruined Beckham’s career, but we’ll always wonder what he could have achieved in that 6 year spell at LA Galaxy.
Why? Because let’s be honest: though it might be improving, no-one cares about what happens in the US. In fact, going anywhere but England, Spain, Germany, France or Italy is admitting you’re past it as a big player. In fact, even going to France, for one of the greatest (if you’re not a Cristiano Ronaldo fan, probably the greatest) players of all time was a bit of an anti-climax (even if it did mean another stint with Neymar). Plus, do you really think Messi needs more money?
RELATED: Is It Time To Stop Calling Ronaldo & Messi The GOATs?
But now, instead of getting our fairy tale ending where Messi leaves PSG and ends his career at Barcelona (maybe even helping them redeem themselves in the Champions League) and instead of providing fans with an intriguing experiment to watch in the Premier League with the likes of Manchester City, it looks like he might be going to the US. Sad. And I’m not the only one that thinks so. A quick browse of the social media pages and there are many comments from like-minded drama queens including: “Why would Messi ruin his legacy” and “what a joke.”
Further comments I can get behind include: “We want to watch his game…He is still best player itw [in the world] in way of playing skills” and “he could beat Ronaldo’s champions league record if he’d stay [in Europe] for another season…”
Another social media user saw the funny side, and is hopefully correct in assuming this is much ado about nothing, writing: “‘You miss all the chances you don’t take’ – inter miami’s sporting director.”

Messi leaving Europe would be a tragedy for both the game and him personally. Not only would it give the Cristiano Ronaldo fans more ammunition in their case that CR7 is the true GOAT, but, much as I love Messi, I’m not going to subscribe to watch the MLS because of him. On top of that, though there was clearly a bit of an adjustment period at PSG, he is now hitting scary good form again. He also hasn’t suffered (touch wood) any major injuries the likes of which forced icons like Zlatan over to the MLS. And he’s only 35! For perspective, Ronaldo is 37, Zlatan is 41, and Sergio Busquets, who plays in a much more demanding position, is 34. Not to mention Modric, who is 37 (37!).
Last but not least, at a time when football is getting all vertical, where it’s all about Haaland hip buffing defenders, Mbappe having a good old whinge (so the tabloids tell me anyway: I don’t watch anything but the EPL and La Liga), Vinicius leaving overly officious Manchester City veterans in the dust and Raphinha and Dembele giving the Camp Nou a bit of panel beating with their wild shots, we need a bit of Messi Magic and precision. And in the US, a country which, as The Simpsons pointed out, the Tiki-Taka style of play is generally not appreciated, Messi would be wasted.

Putting Messi in the MLS would be like putting a fine wine in a sauna. No: it would be worse. It really would be like putting a nice cold piece of leftover homemade tortilla (day aged in the fridge) in the microwave, nuking the hell out of it and then throwing it down the toilet. Not that it wouldn’t still be better than the Mercadona tortilla you also threw down the toilet, but you get my drift.
Of course not everyone ages at the same rate. We shouldn’t necessarily compare Messi (physically) to Modric, Zlatan or Cristiano Ronaldo. But he’s got a few more good years in him at least. Can we please not waste them? Yours sincerely, the football world (I know you’re watching, Messi’s agent, I know you’re watching…).
