If the best kind of nap is the one where you wake up unsure what year it is, the best kind of sleep is the one where you wake up actually feeling prepared to throw off the covers—a rare sensation for most of us. As a double espresso connoisseur and an early adopter of the ‘zombie chic’ look, I thought I would consult a professional to see if my tardy ways could be countered.Fortunately for my self-esteem (but rather unfortunately for Australia), I’m not alone: recent statistics show that an estimated 1.5 million Australians aged 20 years and over have sleep disorders. And as sleep medicine specialist and national spokesperson, Dr Justin Hundloe, told me, with life getting increasingly busier for the modern-day Aussie, it’s ever more important that we get enough sleep—and have the tools to do it.According to Justin, many sleep disorders are also strongly connected to cardiovascular disease (CVD), with poor sleep quality potentially causing or contributing to CVD, and CVD also potentially disturbing sleep—a vicious, yawn-inducing cycle.
“More than 50% of patients with heart failure have sleep abnormalities.”
Suffice to say: getting enough quality z’s is crucial. But you can’t just decide to get a good night’s sleep—you have to set yourself up for it. Luckily for you (and me) Justin was kind enough to spill his top 13 tips for getting a better night’s sleep, in honour of World Sleep Day.Have at ’em.
Go To Sleep At The Same Time Each Night (& Get Up At The Same Time Each Morning)
As a passionate weekend lie-in advocate, I was quick to pull the doc up on this claim. “Surely it’s better to catch up on the sleep you missed Monday to Friday than not do it at all?”, I asked. However Justin—a medical professional—had different ideas: “Yes, this does include the weekend. A regular sleep schedule needs to be consistent for the body’s internal clock to work at its best.”How’s that? As Justin explains, “A consistent sleep schedule is required to promote melatonin production and release, a hormone which regulates the sleep cycle.” Thus, although the ideal sleep and wake times vary depending on the person’s age, level of daily activity and overall health, the one constant is that the schedule should be… constant.
“As we cannot suggest a ‘one size, fits all’ sleep schedule, it is best to set a schedule that works best for the individual and promote consistency.”
Oh and before you go radically changing your nocturnal patterns, remember this: if the sleep schedule needs to be adjusted, it is best to be done slowly: “When the sleep pattern is disrupted, it may result in increased daytime tiredness or difficulty getting to sleep.”
Don’t Take Naps During The Day
Although you may have seen the recent study, which suggested napping can be beneficial for your health (potentially even lowering your blood pressure), Doctor Hundloe says that further research is required to validate these findings, and that you should treat napping as an occasional indulgence (or avoid it altogether) rather than rely on it to get you through the day.
“It is not that we encourage people not to nap; rather, we emphasise that if overnight sleep is regular and without interruption, there should be no need for a daytime nap.”
When daytime tiredness resulting in the need for a nap becomes a regular occurrence, Doctor Hundloe recommends you consult your GP.
Go To Bed Only When You Are Drowsy
According to the doc, one of the best things you can do to help get a good night’s sleep is to wait until you are drowsy to go to bed. You should also avoid spending too much time on your phone, computer or TV in the hour before bed, “As this can have a negative effect.”However, if it is getting late and you still aren’t feeling drowsy, there are a number of things you can do to help yourself relax before hitting the sheets: “Try reading a book, listening to calming music, taking a bath or making a to-do list, this will take away any lingering stresses you have about the next day and prevent ‘worry time.'”
Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol Within Six Hours Of Bedtime
To help ensure you are in the optimal condition to get a good sleep, Justin says you should avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and strenuous exercise in the hours leading up to bedtime. So preheat the decaf’s and chuck that dark chocolate out, quick smart…
“It takes about six hours for one half of the caffeine intake to be eliminated from the body.”
How do you determine if you are a “heavy” caffeine user? “Heavy use of caffeine is classed as approximately four or more cups of coffee a day,” says Justin, “So determining when to stop drinking coffee would depend on a number of factors, such as how much caffeine has been consumed from all sources—not just the obvious caffeine intake in your daily cup of coffee.”
Avoid The Use Of Nicotine Close To Bedtime Or During The Night
Forget your lungs—nicotine is not a smart option for your sleep cycle, either.
Obtain Regular Exercise, But Avoid Strenuous Exercise Four Hours Before Bedtime
Start hitting up the gym in the morning, and who knows—the bags under your eyes could just disappear.
Avoid Eating A Heavy Meal Late In The Day
Unless you’re on holiday in Spain (and have had a lengthy siesta to process that seven-course lunch), try and have an easily digestible meal before bedtime, and keep the sirloin steaks for lunchtime.
View this post on Instagram
Minimise Light, Noise & Extreme Temperatures In The Bedroom
Unless you’re one of those weirdos that can only fall asleep to the tune of a top volume TV and vacuum cleaner (if you are; seek help immediately), try to make your sleep cave as conducive to sleep as possible.
Follow A Routine To Help You Relax Before Sleep
“Read a book, listen to music, or take a bath.”
Avoid Using Your Bed For Anything Other Than Sleep Or Sex
What’s not to love?
Try Making A To-Do List Before You Go To Bed
This will prevent what the doc calls, “Worry Time.”
Avoid Clock Watching
If you’re not sleeping, don’t make it worse by stressing over the fact you’re not sleeping (granted, this is easier said than done). Maybe try taking another bath?
If You Have Ongoing Sleep Issues Seek Professional Medical Advice
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it’s necessary to call in the big guns. After all: a quick consultation could save you oodles of time (and sleep) in the long run.

The first rule of watch club is you always talk about watch club. Misleading Brad Pitt lines aside, today we are talking about something rather important: watch etiquette. So you’ve finally scored that elusive timepiece you’ve been banking on for years. Or perhaps it’s your very first encounter with a luxury watch (every man’s been there). Whichever your reason it’s important for any man to know how to properly wear a watch once he’s attained it.
A Rolex Submariner, an IWC Pilot’s Watch, an OMEGA Speedmaster, a TAG Heuer Monaco, whatever your choice of wrist candy, there are ideal ways to wear it. Today we’re running you through the drills on how to wear a watch and how to avoid the most common oversights.
In This Story…
Which Wrist To Wear A Watch On

Ah, one of the oldest watch debates in the world. If someone ever tells you that you’re wearing your watch on the wrong hand, back slap them with your leather glove and tell them you challenge them to a duel. Alternatively, just explain to them that the rule is to wear a watch on the non-dominant wrist. That is, if you’re right handed you wear it on your left wrist. If you’re left handed, the watch goes on your right wrist. That’s the traditional rule anyway. These days it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a watch on whichever wrist you’d prefer.
Picking The Right Watch For The Right Occasion
Ever seen a grown man wear a G-Shock with a dinner suit to a wedding? On a charm scale of 1 to 10, it’s an Adam Sandler. So here’s how it goes for picking the right watch for the right occasion.
Sports, Adventure & Diving Watches

The line’s a bit blurry these days with many watchmakers incorporating ‘diving/sports/adventure heritage’ into their more refined pieces for formal use, but we’re talking about serious sports watches which are designed to do just that. Think bulkier Breitling Superoceans, Bremont’s Endurance GMT or OMEGA Seamasters paired with rubber straps for dedicated active duty. These are in no way bad watches, they’re just not designed to bode well with a suit because they can’t sit snug under a sleeve and tend to feature hits of bright colours. Dedicated outdoor watches like these are more sports watches, so wear them with your casual wear instead. Think along the lines of cool active outerwear.
Dress Watches

At the other end of the spectrum we have the dress watch. Whilst some may bear names that take inspiration from their sporting heritage, they are essentially heavily refined versions which still fall under the dress watch category. Dress watches often exhibit a much cleaner dial design and more humbling functions (hours, minutes, seconds, date) which hark back to tradition rather than all out versatility. Size-wise they also tend to be slimmer and feature more traditionally shaped cases paired to leather straps or a classy steel bracelet. Its design is solely dedicated to seeing you through formal affairs whether that be in a business suit, a wedding suit or a fancy tuxedo.
Aviation & Motorsport Watches

This one’s another murky area as both driving and aviation-style watches are these days acceptable as dress watches. As a style guide, we’d recommend sticking to traditional dress watches with suits and tuxedos if you’re the conservative type. Pairing driving and aviation watches to suits are for those who want to add a bit more character, conversation and ‘pop’ to their overall look. These types of watches can do that because they often come with cool design elements and distinct functions lifted from their respective fields (motorsports and flying). The best way to describe these watches is somewhere between a dress watch and a sports watch. They have the refinement of a dress watch but with the added flair of a sports watch. As such, we’d recommend pairing them with a smart casual look; a blazer with jeans, a denim shirt with chinos, button-up linen shirts with fitted shorts, leather jackets with jeans. The idea is that the watch should match your day’s activity.
How To Accessorise Your Watch

Besides playing around with the plethora of straps available on the market, there’s no other way to accessorise a nice luxury watch – and that’s a good thing. Simply switching out a black leather strap with a brown leather strap can take a dress watch from formal to smart casual. The same also goes for changing it up to a NATO strap for casual weekend duties. Each strap material has its place and purpose so again, know what the occasion is and then style your watch accordingly.
- Black leather straps and steel bracelets are best used in formal environments like work or special functions
- Brown leather straps can also be used in formal situations but cross over into smart casual territory
- NATO straps are usually woven nylon or fabric and feature cool colours and patterns. Use these to pare down your watch whilst standing out for all the right reasons
- Rubber straps are purely for active duty like sports, sailing, diving, adventure, etc
Wearing A Watch With A Dress Shirt

A formal affair calls for a formal look. From weddings, to swanky bars to job interviews, there’s an art to pairing a watch to any formal dress shirt.
- First rule: A long sleeve shirt should cover 85-percent or more of the watch when your arm is straight. It’s only when the arm is bent that the watch should be visible. Also make sure the sleeve length isn’t so long that it goes half way down your forehand. A alterations place can fix this
- Second rule: Watches always belong under the sleeve, not over it (unless you want to look like you just robbed someone)
- Third rule: The watch’s thickness should be moderate so that it can sit under the cuff comfortably. As we mentioned, a chunky diver’s watch won’t work well in this dress shirt-suit scenario
- Fourth rule: Make sure the strap fits your wrist properly. You’re not in school anymore so wearing a watch around your forearm will never be cool
Wearing A Watch With Short Sleeve & Long Sleeve Shirts

We’re no longer talking about suits and dress shirts here. Watches are also perfect for pairing with your casual short sleeve button-up shirts and long sleeve button-up shirts. There’s no rules on which sleeve style one is right or wrong for watches – so long as the fit is right.
Some proven winning looks for the casual shirt-watch combo includes the long sleeve button up shirt with rolled sleeves. It’s a good way to show off the timepiece and we’d recommend opting for sports watches or driving and aviation timepieces. The same can also be applied to short sleeve shirts.
If you’re a casual t-shirt kind of guy, definitely don’t choose a dress watch as this will look a bit out of place. Again, sports watches or driving and aviation timepieces work best here irrespective of long or short sleeve.
Wearing A Watch FAQ
Wear a watch appropriate for the occasion – outdoor and aviation watches for casual and smart casual setting, while dress watches should be reserved for formal affairs. A dress watch is generally modest in size, thin, mechanical and may or may not feature a date. While the case may be steel or titanium, the strap attached is usually leather. Both are good, but if you tend to dress more formal than not, leather straps are better. They are more comfortable to wear and adapt with time to fit you more perfectly. How to match a watch with your outfit?

When date-night gets replaced by Netflix, what’s a girl to do? While some relationships are all sunshine and rose-scented candles, others take a turn for the worst. And although time has a way of turning even the most loved up couple’s ~lazy~ Sundays into lazy Sundays, it turns out that realising your partner now prefers bacon to sex can be quite demoralising.
How good your relationship is otherwise, as well as your personality, ambitions and career-status when such a realisation hits all play a role in determining how you react to this situation.
As cheating is one of the most well-traversed topics you’ll find, we thought we’d cut through the thousands of dating advice columns, by offering up first-person responses of people who’ve strayed from their partner, to avoid the judgemental tropes you often find on the internet.
So here it is—the unadulterated truth about adultery. Here are 10 ‘good’ reasons why people have cheated.
They Were Questioning Their Relationship
As one Elite Daily writer admits, the old, “If you want to hook up with someone else, just break up with your partner first,” principle is too simplistic to apply to the messy reality of some relationships: “As my plane touched down in the desert, my focus was on my job, not my crumbling relationship. My intention was to bury myself in work, not to cheat on my ex-fiancé.”
But as she discovered, you might not realise how badly your relationship is going until you are faced with the opportunity to hook up with someone else: “What happened to me in Vegas was that I finally realized that I was capable of walking away from a relationship that had run its course.”
“I stopped living in fear of what would happen next thanks to a stranger who appeared in my life at the exact time that I needed a distraction, an outlet, a change.”
Their Relationship Had Already Fallen To Pieces
Although the aforementioned author had been to couples’ therapy and read relationship advice books, she now realises they were simply not a good match: “All of the signs were there—I couldn’t set a date for our wedding; whenever I’d see my parents, I’d burst into uncontrollable tears; my friends begged me to rethink the marriage.”
“In Vegas… when my boss recommended that my coworker and I take one of our clients out for drinks. It seemed harmless enough. We had started with a group of about six people. One drink became two drinks, which became three, and before I realized it, we were at a second bar and our group had shrunk to four people.”
The Person They Hooked Up With Gave Them An Emotional Boost
“By bar number three,” she continued, “I was dancing with my client without a care in the world. It was the first time in a long time that I felt light and carefree. The weight of my relationship melted away; I felt like the person I had been prior to my engagement.”
“I had missed this version of myself.”
“We concocted the most thinly-veiled, alcohol-induced excuse to leave together and made a beeline to the elevator to his room. As he threw me up against the elevator wall and kissed my neck, I felt one fleeting wave of guilt and then excitement.”
Their Partner Had Been Taking Them For Granted
“This is what I had been missing — this is what I craved,” the Elite Daily writer’s story ends; “My relationship with my ex had become so routine, so mundane that even our attempts at romance had felt contractual; this was new, exciting, thrilling.”
In a recent Reddit thread, a serial cheater agrees, putting it like this: “The first time we slept together he (the guy she had an affair with) told me ‘I’ve wanted this for so long’, and ‘You’re so amazing’ and then held me all night… The last time you and I had sex, you said ‘thanks’… and went about your day.”

Their Partner Had Stopped Flirting With Them
“He (Mr. Affair) looks at me,” the female Redditor continued. “He tries to catch my eyes with his both in public and when we’re alone.” As for her partner?
“You close your eyes so tight during sex I can’t help wondering who you’re thinking about.”
Ouch. But wait: there’s more.
“He looks for me. Even at busy crowded get togethers he’s not at ease until he finds me and knows I’m there.”
But you?
“Our last trip together I fell behind your pace while walking with you and you didn’t notice for 7 minutes.”

Their Partner Didn’t Respect Them
Bringing her post to a conclusion, Mrs. Reddit sums her illicit experience up like this: “We talk and share our days, our experiences, ambitions, desires with one another. He remembers little things I mentioned to him years ago.”
But you?
“I can’t get a word in edgewise when you’re talking to me. When I try to start a conversation with you, you often don’t even realize I’m speaking, or you ask ‘were you saying something?’ after I give up trying to get your attention.”
“He makes me feel seen, wanted, beautiful, sexy, important, smart, and frankly I can’t ever get enough of him.”
Their Partner Cheated On Them First
In a separate Reddit thread, another woman explained how her partner strayed numerous times before she returned the favour: “He cheated on me multiple times. I was young and naive so I forgave him. Up until that point I never cheated on him, but because he kept cheating on me, I guess he was paranoid that I’d cheat on him too.”
“I went on a beach day trip with some friends one day, but we ended up having to spend the night because of a big storm. My ex gave me a really hard time because there would be other guys there and he was worried that I would cheat. I finally got fed up of always being accused so I just did it. I slept with one of my friends.”
“I didn’t feel bad at all,” she continued; “My ex treated me terribly and always made me out to be the bad guy even though he was the one constantly hurting me. Surprise, surprise, when he found out that I cheated on him too, he went ballistic and called me a horrible person and said that he couldn’t believe that I could do something like that to him. Up until this point he had cheated on me 4 times, with 4 different girls.”
Looking back on it, she had this to say: “I don’t condone cheating and would never do it now, but this is one of the rare times that I think it was well deserved. We broke up shortly after that because ‘he couldn’t trust me anymore’. I was trying to break up with him for a while but he wouldn’t leave me alone.”
“Cheating on him got me out of that toxic relationship.”

If you think your post-workout is gluggy; try swallowing the realisation you’ve been consuming your protein all wrong. Or at least—unless you partake in a certain nocturnal ritual—the realisation that your ‘gains game’ has room for nutritional improvement.
Although conventional wisdom says you should drink your protein shakes early in the morning (or immediately following a workout), new research from The School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM) suggests adding another protein hit just before bedtime could “maximize (your) strength and muscle mass gains during regular resistance exercise training.”
And while protein shakes are one solid option, for those that crave variety: high-protein pancakes, peanut butter cookies and banana protein muffins (to name a few) will—if you put enough protein-high ingredients in them—achieve the same effect.
The relationship between consuming protein and one’s ability to build muscle is well established. This is why so many athletes and gym goers drink protein shakes after working out. However, this study’s point of difference is that it investigated the timing of consuming protein—specifically, just before bedtime—and how it impacts one’s ability to synthesize muscle protein.
Just this week a new paper was published in Frontiers in Nutrition, which involved NUTRIM scientists in Maastricht reviewing data from 44 “healthy young men on a 12-week lifting program” designed to assess the effect of bedtime protein on their gains.
As reported by News Medical Life Sciences (NMLS), “Half of the participants received a pre-sleep protein shake containing about 30g of casein and 15 grams of carbs every night, whilst the others were given an energy-free drink.”
The result? Although the training increased both groups’ muscle mass (as you would expect), “The increase was significantly greater in the group taking bedtime protein and was associated with a greater increase in muscle strength and size,” (NMLS).
To confirm whether these gains were achieved by the timing of the protein ingestion rather than just general additional protein intake, the scientists recommended further studies with larger sample sizes. But the signs for protein-heavy dessert lovers are positive (at last, an excuse to be at the forefront of science).
View this post on Instagram
Also, according to NMLS, “The available facts do support the importance of the timing of protein intake.” So: good news for nocturnal snackers everywhere.
“Muscle recovery and growth tend to occur during sleep when the muscles are not being used. However, in order for this to occur amino acids are needed and these are not stored by the body,” (NMLS).
Raising the level of circulating amino acids before going to sleep (via protein ingestion) therefore makes more available for overnight muscle repair. So as long as it does not negatively impact your sleep, and as long as it’s not laden with sugar then this could be a handy new habit for you.
While this varies individual to individual, protein intake has not been found to affect sleep quality or increase the amount of fat you store. That said: if you are serious about your training you should consult the holy trinity (a PT, nutritionist and sleep specialist) to get a holistic program in place.
Oh and a final word of warning for those that like to have their cake and skip their workout: this positive effect was found not to be as strong unless the pre-sleep protein intake came after evening exercise.

“Non-sexual” and “safe for work” are the last expressions you expect to see on Pornhub. But if one man’s quest to make the internet laugh (and make a living while he’s at it) continues along its upward trajectory then they may become more and more common.
Ryan Creamer is a 26-year-old comic and writer for College Humour, who last year began recording himself (fully clothed) performing “wholesome” acts, like “I Deliver You A Pizza & Don’t Put My Weiner In It” and “I Hug You & Say I Had A Really Good Time Tonight” and surreptitiously uploading them to Pornhub.
As he—sheepishly—revealed to Buzzfeed News, the channel started late one evening when he was browsing Pornhub for porn. He then happened to notice a “Work for Us” option at the bottom of the page.
“I clicked and learned anyone can get verified. You just submit a picture of your face with a piece of paper with your name on it,” Creamer told Buzzfeed. “Once they verify who you are, they verify your account, and then I posted my first video.”
His first upload, “I Tuck You in After You Have Cum,” features Creamer doing just that—no irony, no sexy twist, no kinks. And unless you have a secret fetish for a big, jolly smile and being kissed goodnight, the video is 100% safe for work.
Creamer then posted the video to Reddit, a popular internet forum, where people’s interest exceeded his wildest expectations: “It was not really pre-planned. I had an idea for the first video…that was the only idea that I had… Within a couple days, it got big,” (Buzzfeed).
He then made a bunch more, including “I, Your Step Brother, Decline Your Advances but Am Flattered Nonetheless,” “I Ride in a Taxi and Don’t Have Sex With the Driver,” and “POV FOREHEAD KISS COMPILATION,” some of which have hundreds of thousands of views.
I’ve found it, the kinkiest thing on PornHub. pic.twitter.com/R8SF8IZS8u
— Ava Ex Machina (@silicondomme) 31 January 2019
But now for the real question: does he really make money out of it? Well, as Ryan yesterday revealed on Reddit, Pornhub’s ad revenue system is working out “pretty good” for him. How good exactly? Well, according to him, good enough to make a living (i.e. more than most comedians).
“I paid rent with it last month,” he wrote on his Reddit thread, “But (I) don’t think that is something that will happen all the time.”
While Creamer initially worried some of the porn community would be offended, he told Buzzfeed real porn stars and sex industry workers have given him positive feedback; “Every person who works in the porn and sex industry has been kind to me, which is really, really cool.”
“It can come across like I’m making fun of sex workers, but everyone who is in this industry has been so, so nice. That’s made me feel really good.”
While Creamer admits that his initial motivation was to have a bit of a laugh and maybe advance his comedy career, he told Buzzfeed that after getting such positive feedback from avid porn users, he’s motivated to make more videos.
“It’s a duo feeling, like I am hoping it leads to opportunities, but additionally, it’s making people feel good.”
As for Pornhub, how do they feel about the potential de-sexualisation of their site? According to a spokesperson for the company, they welcome “content creators of all types,” and Mr. Creamer’s is no exception.
“Ryan’s content has been very well received by our community and we encourage artists and creators alike to consider our platform to get their work out into the world.”

If you’ve never heard of him then you’re about to. Cole Sprouse is on the rise as one of Hollywood’s next generation of male stars and if his wardrobe choices are anything to go by, Harry Styles will also need to keep a close eye over his shoulder. The latest sighting of of the 26-year-old American actor in New York City has him looking and dressing very similar to Harry Styles in his more mature years. Exhibit A is the overcoat-tee combo – Sprouse opts for a camel coloured coat paired to fitted denim and a slick pair of chelsea boots – textbook Harry Styles move.
Exhibit B: A damn good shearling jacket paired to layering and skinny denim. Still not convinced?
How about Exhibit C – a very cool demonstration of how to pull off floral and bold print shirts complete with matching haircut. We rest our case. Now if you’re thinking where you’ve seen Sprouse’s face before, it would mainly be from teen shows like Riverdale. Many moons before that though, Sprouse starred alongside his twin brother, Dylan Sprouse, as Julian alongside Adam Sandler in Big Daddy.
Yeah, that kid. Feeling old yet?

Here’s a fact: the number of billionaires in the world has doubled in the last 10 years. That means more big wig press conferences, more opulent holidays, ever more enticing luxury cruises, and some darn high expectations when it comes to air travel. Not surprisingly, the airlines of the world have catered to this growing demographic, raking in upwards of $17,000 per First Class ticket.Until now.As the “rideshare” concept has been introduced to private jets (where members buy “all you can fly” memberships for $3,000 a month), and as the quality of business class seats has soared, passengers who value comfort are going with Business. As Simple Flying, an airline reviewer, puts it: “Essentially, business class has become so good that there is rarely much of a point of difference to First (apart from the chunk of change).”Meanwhile, those that still hanker after ‘true luxury’ have started buying private jets—or fighting for the shrinking number of First Class tickets on offer.
