You know how it is: you study, get a research grant, watch a few terminator flicks—the next logical step is to make killer ‘bots. Duh.

It came out yesterday that Korea’s Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), has partnered with defence manufacturer Hanwha Systems – a decision academics worldwide have criticised.

A boycott letter is now doing the rounds, which has been signed by more than 50 professors, led by Toby Walsh, a professor at the University of New South Wales, who told The Guardian, “Developing autonomous weapons would make the security situation on the Korean peninsula worse”.

He believes the partnership will accelerate the artificial-intelligence arms race, saying; “There are plenty of great things you can do with AI that save lives, including in a military context, but to openly declare the goal is to develop autonomous weapons and have a partner like this sparks huge concern.”

“This is a very respected university partnering with a very ethically dubious partner that continues to violate international norms.”

The South Korean University’s president objected, making a statement in which he maintained, “KAIST does not have any intention to engage in development of lethal autonomous weapons systems and killer robots”.

“I reaffirm once again that KAIST will not conduct any research activities counter to human dignity including autonomous weapons lacking meaningful human control.”

He claims the partnership’s purpose is to, “Provide a strong foundation for developing national defence technology”, such as “AI-based command and decision systems, composite navigation algorithms for mega-scale unmanned undersea vehicles, AI-based smart aircraft training systems, and AI-based smart object tracking and recognition technology.”

The above use of AI sounds quite reasonable- useful, even – however if this is the objective then the university’s decision to partner with a weapons manufacturer doesn’t add up.

And if weaponised technology is produced then, as Professor Walsh pointed out to The Guardian, “Eventually they would certainly turn up in North Korea – and they would have no qualms about using them against the South.”

In light of the Australian cricket team’s recent ball tampering scandal, we thought we’d skip the theatrics and get to the heart of the matter: how to apologise like a man.

“Even if the fault split is something like 1%/99%, you still need to work hard to humble yourself and come to an understanding of what that 1% is rooted in (The Art Of Manliness)”.

More importantly, SKINS Executive Chairman Jaime Fuller told us; the key to a good apology is authenticity: and this means contrition. Without contrition the path to redemption is a long and difficult one. For some it comes easier than for others.

Canadian Ben Johnson is the perfect example, he said, explaining how, “For 25 years his was the name and face synonymous with doping until he passed the baton to Lance Armstrong. When first confronted, Ben chose to lie and deny having doped. It was only when confronted with secret recordings that he chose to come clean. There is little doubt this resulted in him taking much longer to find redemption.”

When asked about the cricket scandal, he said, “Steven Smith has already done most of the redemption work in my opinion. His contrition was there for all to see when he broke down in his press conference. He now needs to back this up with some good work and you’ll find he will have the majority of the public on his side in his quest to get back to being the champion cricketer that he is.”

Alex Tselios, founder and CEO of The Big Smoke, agreed; “Watching figures apologise with a defensive tone, such as Mark Zuckerberg regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal, doesn’t ignite trust when it is not deemed authentic.”

“Audiences can spot authenticity very quickly, and will be fast to analyse your response. It’s far better to be honest but navigate clearly why you understand if a side feels let down.”

There are exceptions, such as Zinedane Zidane—ex-football player and current manager of Real Madrid)—who says he would rather die than apologise to Marco Materrazi, whom he headbutted in the 2006 World Cup Football Final. But in these cases it’s likely fans thought the action being apologised for was justifiable in the first place (Materrazi is widely believed to have insulted Zidane’s mother, or sister).

Managing Director of The PR Hub, Samantha Dybac, emphasised the importance of fast, decisive action in the context of public apologies, as well as—again—accepting responsibility. “Trying to downplay a situation, delay an outcome or shift the blame where others might be involved creates a negative tone and opens the way for extensive opinion and commentary, which only exacerbates the situation”, she said.

She also offered a piece of consolation for anyone in need of making an apology, “History points to the fact that despite the initial public outcry, memories fade and people can be quite forgiving over time”.

Tinder is moving into the next big phase of narcissism with its first video-based feature being tested with iOS users in Canada and Sweden.In a new blog post the dating app announced the arrival of Tinder Loops, a feature which generates moving images/video that’s similar to a GIF or Instagram’s Boomerang. The feature will essentially allow users to upload a two-second long ‘looping’ video to their profile in order to stand out more amongst the sea of thirsty eligible partnerless men.How so? Once you’ve got that down-pat, its crucial to build a solid client base (something we would recommend doing from the security of your over-priced Sydney apartment). Then the world’s basically one giant playground for your tanned bod and over-instagrammed Macbook. Monthly rent in the south of Spain is roughly what you’d pay per week in Sydney, and do we even need to mention Bali is just a Jetstar away?

The best times are often spent with doggo and a fine bottle of whisky.

Well now you can have your dog biscuit and eat it too. The Tipsy Cow is the latest drinking hole to realise this life-long dream by bringing to reality the country’s first ever dog-friendly whisky bar.

Let’s get one thing straight though, your dog is not getting drunk here. Rather the idea is to welcome owners and their beloved (and well-behaved) dogs with open arms for a chilled afternoon of the good stuff alongside good company.

The cool idea for a dog-friendly whisky bar came “over a few drinks as good concepts always do”, according to the owners, Paul Tudor and partner Anupam Sharma, who spoke to the Herald Sun.

“A few people have been bringing in their dogs and they say ‘this is great, I’ve got my drink, I’ve got my dog’ and then they just sit down and read a book,” said Sharma.

Whilst it’s a first for Australia, Parisians have long employed this open-door policy for patrons and their pets. The laid back atmosphere of The Tipsy Cow will be accompanied by single malt Scotches from names like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glenmorangie alongside more international flavours like Japan’s Nikka Taketsuru.

The whisky bar wouldn’t be complete without its own mascot and that’s taken care of by the couple’s pointer cross labrador, Nisha.

Nisha actually helped shape the bar’s unique direction to what it is today and the reason was simple.

“There was no way I was going to leave her home,: says Sharma.

Jon Oliver aptly summed up the danger of blindly investing in the cryptocurrency when he described it as, “Everything you don’t understand about money combined with everything you don’t understand about computers”. Accordingly, Bitcoin has more than halved in value this year, causing critics to call it everything from a deflating bubble to a pyramid scheme.

However Jon Matonis, co-founder of Bitcoin Foundation (formerly an executive at VISA), told Business Insider the involvement of major banks like Goldman Sachs will lead to an increase in the liquidity of bitcoin, and ultimately, the price.

“I think it’s fabulous that they’re getting into it because it brings in new liquidity. They’re going to develop futures markets, options markets, I even think you’re going to start to see interest rate markets around bitcoin.”

Due to its lack of liquidity, the cryptocurrency market is extremely volatile, and the daily trading volume of major currencies like bitcoin has reduced significantly since the crypto-market crashed in January. However this drop, according to CCN, has allowed institutional investors in the futures market (like Goldman Sachs), to manipulate the market, which is one of the reasons it has demonstrated correlated price movements over the past few months.

Fielding questions about this downward trend, Matonis said, “To the people who say bitcoin’s a bubble, I would say bitcoin is the pin that’s going to pop the bubble. The bubble is the insane bond markets and the fake equity markets that are propped up by the central banks. Those are the bubbles.”

Although this statement will ring true with those who distrust governments and international financial institutions, it remains to be seen when major banks will actually enter the crypto-market. If they do though: it might be time to lay a few cheeky bets—or investments, for those feeling confident…

Gay dating app Grindr is the latest tech company to be caught up in an alleged privacy breach.A recent BuzzFeed report revealed that the popular dating app had been sharing sensitive user information such as the HIV status, location and e-mail of its users with at least two third-party services. Given that Grindr boasts 3.6 million daily active users around the world, this is not a good look for the American-based company.Grindr was quick to hit back at the allegations though, telling BuzzFeed that data sharing is “standard” in the industry and highlighted the fact that the app has always been a “public forum”.Whilst that explanation isn’t going to go down well with users who trust these kind of companies with their details, the process has always been there (see recent Facebook privacy breach). It also shines light on the fact that a lot of these major companies actually don’t how their database information is spread to external groups.In Grindr’s defence, the app does let users specify their HIV status and the date of their last health check. From there the app utilises external services such as Apptimize and Localytics to track how its users engage with it.It’s this stage of the process that Grindr sends the details of their users’ HIV status along with their health test dates, GPS location data, phone ID and e-mail.

Grindr Chief Technology Officer Scott Chen explained that the company does not and will not sell users’ data to third parties or advertisers – it will only “work with” vendors to further enhance the app, but this involves data sharing.“There are data retention policies in place to further protect our users’ privacy from disclosure,” Chen added.The company spokesman went further by saying that if users didn’t want their data being shared, they simply shouldn’t have volunteered.“It’s important to remember that Grindr is a public forum. You should carefully consider what information to include in your profile.”Bryan Dunn who is the vice president of product at Localytics responded in a statement to the matter, explaining that his firm doesn’t “automatically collect” a user’s personal information.“It is up to each customer to determine what information they send to Localytics, and Localytics processes that data solely for the customer’s use,” he said.“We do not share, or disclose, our customer’s data.”Ben Wizner, director of the ACLU Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, told BuzzFeed, “I hope that one small silver lining here will be that users and citizens will realise that there are enormous loopholes in the privacy regime.”“Personal information is bought and sold freely on a global market.”Grindr was officially founded in 2009 by Joel Simkhai. As of 2016 the app had been sold to the Chinese gaming company, Beijing Kunlun Tech Co.
