Nothing quite says Australia or ‘tradie’ life quite like a ute. An abbreviation for the term ‘utility vehicle’, it can technically be used to describe either something like a Holden Ute – essentially a passenger car with the rear seats removed an open-top cargo area substituted in their place – or a Toyota Hilux – which other countries would class as a pick up truck.
Utes have spawned a culture all of their own in Australia, particularly in rural communities, although it’s not uncommon to see them in their droves in and around the major CBDs around the country. Offering a slight increase in ground clearance compared to their passenger car counterparts, a cargo area to transport all manner of goods and, most commonly, seating for four thanks to a dual-cab setup, utes offer pretty much everything the Australian needs to get from A to B, without having to worry too much about looking after it. Put simply, they’re built to be absued.
It’s with that ‘use and abuse’ attitude in mind that some utes don’t quite match their other tarmac-treading warriors in terms of features or interior luxuries. However, because they’re more likely to be driven out in the bush, it should come as no surprise. That’s not to say you can’t kit out your ute with some comforts, such as reverse cameras, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto infotainment systems and other driving assistance technologies.
For the purposes of this ‘Best Utes’ article, we’ll be looking at the dual-cab models such as the Hilux, the Ford Ranger and the Mitsubishi Triton, with other models being entered from Europe, Japan and even the USA.
In this story…
Toyota HiLux SR5

Fuel Economy: from 8.0 L/100km (SR5)
Price: from $59,785 Drive Away (SR5)
The Toyota HiLux has been around in one form or another since 1968 and has often set the benchmark for durability and reliability. The BBC motoring show Top Gear highlighted this feat particularly well, taking a 1988 HiLux and subjecting it to considerable abuse and torture, only to find it continued to be drivable. Now in its eighth generation, the HiLux still remains the go-to choice for many wannabe ute owners.
The SR5 trim level – a former range-topper – offers pretty much everything you need from a modern-day ute: a range of cab-chassis options, manual or automatic transmissions mated to a 2.8L turbo diesel unit upfront, and a variety of mod-cons including parking sensors, touchscreen display and even autonomous emergency braking. However, the HiLux’s on-road comfort isn’t the absolute best compared to its rival on this list, although it more than makes up for it when you stray from the asphalt and hit the rough stuff.
So if you do find yourself driving dirt tracks and gravel, more than the tarmac around town, the HiLux is still a formidable contender.
Volkswagen Amarok Walkinshaw

Fuel Economy: 9.5 L/100km (combined)
Price: from $71,990 Drive Away
If a combination of performance and a go-anywhere attitude is more your jam, take a look at the Volkswagen Amarok Walkinshaw (W580). What we have here is the tried and tested Amarok platform, but one that has been given a tuning treatment by the guys at Walkinshaw, the former parent company of the Holden Special Vehicles division. And as any Australian should know, that means this ute will be absolute bonkers.
While no change is made to the engine, which remains as as 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel unit that can also be found in the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, the W580 gets specially-designed seats, before Walkinshaw makes adjustments to the suspension, wheels – which are upgraded to 20-inches and fitted with Pirelli Scorpion tyres – and overall aesthetics, adding lashings of black at the front and back end.
Don’t let the lack of increased power detract your attention, however, as the Amarok is still one of the outright winners when it comes to performance compared to its rivals. Plus, when you consider you get permanent all-wheel drive as standard, Volkswagen’s beast becomes increasingly more alluring as both an on-road and off-road champion – Volkswagen doesn’t necessarily position the Amarok as an off-road vehicle, but a purposefully designed model is slated for release in the coming years.
With other features comprising the likes of Apple CarPlay, a multi-collision brake system that automatically slows the car to 10km/h when airbag sensors detect a collision and trailer stabilisation technology, the Volkswagen Amarok Walkinshaw is a serious beast worthy of your consideration.
Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain

Fuel Economy: 8.0 L/100km
Price: from $64,990 Drive Away
You’re certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting an Isuzu D-Max, with no fewer than 13 variants ripe for the picking, comprising a combination of 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains. The latest and current MY21 model has been on the receiving end of a raft of changes, including a new chassis, body, engine and transmissions, pretty much everything that can make a drastic difference to how the vehicle performs over its predecessor. And those changes have been incredibly effective.
Isuzu has so often been a badge that translates to reliability, and the same can very much be said of this latest model. We’ve singled out the X-Terrain as being our vehicle of choice, although you’ll still definitely find much to admire within the rest of the range, as they all offer comfort, great drivability and a generous selection of features as standard.
You’ll find much to love inside the X-Terrain, with leather-accented seats, heaps of adjustments for the seating position and a huge 9-inch infotainment display, making it almost spaceship-like, but with the ability to carve up a path out in the bush. And carve you will, thanks to the 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine that provides plenty of pulling power. It’s not just off-road where the D-Max shines either, as the refinement offered up by the drive, coupled with that interior comfort, makes it somewhat of a rarity: a dual-cab ute that can comfortably haul a family on long road trips.
Mazda BT-50 GT

Fuel Economy: 7.7 L/100km
Price: from $63,580 Drive Away
The Mazda BT-50, when stripped away of its body, is an Isuzu D-Max. The two utes are built in the same factory and share the same platform, making the BT-50 a viable alternative. Where the two differ is in the equipment & styling department, and you’ll find, if you do a side-by-side comparison, there is much to love on either side of the fence depending on your budget.
The easiest comparison to make is to take the D-Max X-Terrain mentioned above and position it against the Mazda BT-50 GT. Both sit at the top of the range for the respective manufacturers, although we reckon Mazda edges out its rival when it comes to standard equipment to reflect that top-of-the-range moniker. Mazda gives you heated leather seats and heated door mirrors, along with a matching alloy spare wheel. And perhaps best of all, demands $3,000 less than its Isuzu counterpart.
But, as we said, the model you choose will depend on your budget, so it’s well worth looking into the differences between the models within your price bracket. It will, quite literally, come down to what you get for your money since the underpinnings are identical between the two. Let battle commence.
Ford Ranger Raptor X

Fuel Economy: 8.2 L/100km
Price: $79,390 Drive Away
With a brand new Ranger line-up expected in 2022, along with a more performance-focused Raptor that is speculated to live up to the Ford Performance branding, the current Ford Ranger Raptor X might not attract as much attention as it potentially should. While it’s certainly not cheap compared to some of its rivals, you do still get a decent amount of kit and performance for your money.
While most of the changes that differentiate the Raptor X from its non-Raptor Ranger siblings are aesthetic – it receives plenty of black accents inside and outside, as well as matte black alloy wheels – not many changes are made to the underpinnings or the engine. This means you get the same 2.0-litre Turbo Diesel that powers the vast majority of the rest of the Ranger line-up, so you may start to wonder where exactly your money is being spent.
Well, it’s going on an incredibly capable ute. While the Ranger may be available in an often-confusing number of trim levels, they all share an ability to pull incredible loads, go anywhere and be damn comfortable while doing so. In fact, it’s no wonder the Ranger as a series regularly contends with the HiLux for the highest number of sales on a monthly basis here in Australia.
Make sure you check out our full 2022 Ford Ranger review if the Raptor is a little bit of overkill for you.
Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

Fuel Economy: 12.4 L/100km
Price: from $89,425 Drive Away
The Jeep Gladiator is an interesting proposition. There are the looks, for starters, which we admit won’t appeal to all prospective buyers looking for a 4×4 ute. It’s also huge, being taller and wider than most other cars you’ll see on Australian roads. It also, in true Jeep fashion, has the ability to ditch the roof and the doors, turning it into a go-anywhere, do-it-all convertible behemoth of a truck. But the Gladiator isn’t geared towards the tradies of the country, but rather those who enjoy spending as much time outdoors as possible, and need a vehicle that can take them pretty much wherever they want to go.
The Rubicon trim level is the one we suspect will appeal to most customers, offering the tough, rugged attitude that has made Jeep famous, although the Overland edition is the one to go for if a premium interior is a tick-box on your list of wants. If you regularly find yourself on tough terrain that requires plenty of ground clearance and a smattering of off-road technologies to get you through it, the Rubicon is the one to go for.
But, even when faced with regular roads, the Gladiator shouldn’t be discarded immediately. Despite its size, it’s perfectly manoeuvrable around town thanks to good visibility – although you may need to factor in the turning circle – although we feel many will be put off by the lack of a Diesel engine, with a V6 petrol-powered unit being your only option. Capable and powerful yes, but economical, perhaps not so much.
But, if you need the off-road capabilities of something like a Jeep Wrangler, with extra space at the back to lug along your camping gear, and you’re a fan of Jeep’s styling, the Gladiator is a ute that needs to be considered.
Mitsubishi Triton GLS

Fuel Economy: from 7.9 L/100km
Price: from $51,740 Drive Away
The Mitsubishi Triton is a valued member of the Japanese manufacturer’s repertoire of vehicles. It can usually be found rounding out the top 3 in ute sales in Australia, behind the aforementioned HiLux and Ranger. Much of its appeal lies in the price: it undercuts its two main rivals by around $10,000 (for the GLS), a sum of money large enough to make you think twice before automatically opting for either of the other two.
That drop in price does bring with it a drop in performance compared to the rivals, albeit only a slight one, but you do get a good amount of equipment inside as standard (depending on the trim level you choose). The mid-range GLS includes LED headlights, premium cloth, push-button start and dual-zone climate control.
Where the Triton can suffer is, unfortunately, where it matters most, the ride. While it’s not bad by any means, you are likely to feel more comfortable on longer journeys sitting inside some other contenders on this list. However, for the most part, the Triton more than holds its own and it will serve you perfectly well for family camping trips at the weekend. If your budget simply can’t stretch to the likes of the offerings from Toyota or Ford, the Mitsubishi Triton is the best of the rest.
Nissan Navara ST-X Dual Cab

Fuel Economy: 7.6 L/100km
Price: from $55,850 Drive Away
The Nissan Navara is now into its fifth generation, which this time around, ushers in a major overhaul. While most of the changes do relate to exterior aesthetics, Nissan has made some much-needed adjustments underneath. The engine and suspension have been left largely unchanged, meaning you get the same twin-turbo 2.3-litre Turbo Diesel, kicking out 140kW of power, slotting nicely in between the Mitsubishi Triton on the lower end, and virtually all other contenders on the higher end (which have around 150kW as a minimum).
For those who appreciate technical differences, Nissan has fitted the Navara with coil springs, as opposed to the leaf-sprung suspension you’ll find on most rivals. The coils bring with them a comfortable ride along with the added benefit of the whole vehicle feeling decidedly more stable on the road, especially if you haven’t got anything in the back weighing the rear of the car down.
In fact, the Navara fairs rather well when put up against on-road and off-road scenarios, and you also get a raft of driver-assistant and safety technologies thrown in for good measure. There’s definitely much to love about this new and improved Navara, and it should definitely feature on your list for consideration.
Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Fuel Economy: 12.6 L/100km
Price: from $114,990 Drive Away
If you want a ‘large and in charge’ ute that will commandeer the road, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 should feature at the top of your list (alongside the Dodge RAM below). The Silverado is sold via HSV dealers – which will eventually be rebranded as General Motors Special Vehicles (GMSV) – who take it upon themselves to convert the American utes to right-hand drive to accommodate Australian drivers.
A new generation of Silverado will eventually be sold in Australia, but the global pandemic has meant there will be a significant delay. The current generation is still available, however, albeit in low numbers. They’re not cheap by any means, with any version of the 2500 (of which there are 4) all setting you back six-figure sums. However, they are all powered by a hefty 6.6-litre Duramax turbocharged V8 Diesel engine, giving it plenty of power to carry and pull pretty much anything you can think of.
The inside is just as extravagant as the exterior, with huge seats and a huge amount of headroom. Palatial is a good word to describe it. And despite its sheer size, you may be surprised to know the Silverado is actually quite an easy truck to drive and, similarly to the Jeep Gladiator, is fitted with plenty of off-roading technologies to allow you to go wherever your heart desires.
Dodge RAM 1500 TRX

Fuel Economy: 19.6 L/100km
Price: from $199,950 Drive Away
The Dodge Ram 1500 has finally landed on Australian shores thanks to Ram Trucks. Available in five trim levels: Limited, Laramie, Warlock, Express and the insane TRX, there is something for every Australian who needs to have one of the largest utes available parked on their driveway.
All 1500 derivatives have been given Dodge’s iconic 5.7L V8 Hemi engine, but the TRX gets extra power thanks to a 6.2L V8 Hemi supercharged power unit instead (The very same as the one found in the brutal Dodge Challenger Hellcat). This monster of an engine gives the Ram 1500 TRX 523kW of power and 882Nm of torque. What this means in real-world terms, is that the Dodge Ram 1500 is the world’s fastest, most powerful pickup truck money can buy.
All that power coupled with interior luxury (you can read more on the Ram Trucks website) means the Dodge Ram 1500 TRX doesn’t come cheap. With prices starting at just under $200,000, you’re paying supercar money for a supercharged-powered ute. It’s a serious gas guzzler too, but did you really expect it to be that economical?

When thinking about a tattoo idea, not only do you need to think about what you’re going to get, but you also need to think about where you’re going to have your tattoo on your body. Your forearm makes a great placement option for a tattoo, as it offers a large area of space and is a body part that is going to be on show more often than not.
It’s with this in mind that you need to think carefully about what forearm tattoo you get, as you don’t necessarily want to have something offensive tattooed onto you, for all the world to see. Some good tattoo options for your forearm are going to be ones that you really want to show off, perhaps tattoos that have significant meaning to you.
If you’re a little stuck on forearm tattoo ideas, then take a look at the gallery below. We’ve put together a comprehensive list of just some of the tattoos that look great on your forearm, to help give you some inspiration.
Small Forearm Tattoo

A small forearm tattoo is one of the best options for men to get if it’s your first foray into the world of tattoos, or if you already have other tattoos on the forearm and just want to fill in some space. Fine line tattoos, such as the one in this image, work well for forearms, as they can be seen clearly, but aren’t so ‘in your face’ as something with a lot of colours.
Simple Forearm Tattoo

If you want a forearm tattoo that is a little more simple, how about some wording? Men wanting a simple forearm tattoo aren’t necessarily limited in terms of size, as you have your whole forearm area to play with. You could also opt for a line drawn around the entire circumference of your forearm, perhaps in various thicknesses.
Outer Forearm Tattoo

As we mentioned earlier, men have the entire forearm area to use as a canvas and so getting a tattoo on the outer forearm still leaves space on the inner forearm to get any other ink you wish in the future. A snake or dragon, as seen in this image, is a great forearm tattoo idea for men, as it follows the natural movement of the forearm, including where the muscle is. Floral work is also particularly effective.
Inner Forearm Tattoo

Space on the outer forearm taken up? Turn your arm over and you have more space. Inner forearm tattoos are a great place to have something significant inked onto you, as they can be held close to the body. Alternatively, it’s also a space to place something particularly artistic, as it’s an area that others are going to see incredibly easily.
Rose Forearm Tattoo

Roses are an incredibly popular tattoo option for men and can be placed anywhere on the body, but they can look particularly great on the forearm. Rose tattoos, perhaps unsurprisingly, are said to signify love and passion. So, if you love yourself, get a rose tattoo on your forearm!
Quarter Sleeve Forearm Tattoo

With such a large amount of space on your forearm, men may want to consider getting a full quarter sleeve tattoo to take advantage of it. Admittedly, quarter sleeve tattoos aren’t going to be to everyone’s taste (they’re for life, remember?). But by using all of the space available, you can either choose to have one large, incredibly detailed tattoo to form a sleeve, or several smaller tattoos joined together.
Japanese Forearm Tattoo

Japanese tattoos are incredibly distinct in their appearance, and usually include images of Koi fish, dragons, snakes, tigers and geishas. Traditional Japanese tattoos – also known as Irezumi – are applied by hand, with a needle attached to a bamboo pole. However, in modern times, tattoo artists using conventional tattoo guns have been able to master the style. If you get a Japanese forearm tattoo then it’s likely you either already have other Japanese tattoos, or you plan to in the future.
Native American Forearm Tattoo

Some men choose to get Native American figures tattooed on their forearms. How come? Well, tradition states that Native American tattoos signify protection and healing. They can also be used to signify status and accomplishment, so could be a good tattoo option for men who are particularly successful in life.
Tiger Forearm Tattoo

Tigers are another popular tattoo idea for men. Symbolising raw power and strength, a tiger tattoo on the forearm could be a good option for men who are regulars at the gym. As this particular example of a tiger forearm tattoo shows, the sheer amount of space available can mean your tattoo artist can make the tiger incredibly detailed.
Sailor Jerry Forearm Tattoo

Anyone who knows tattoos will know the name, Sailor Jerry. A prominent American tattoo artist who lived until 1972, he was known for his distinctive style of tattooing. This forearm tattoo is a perfect example of the Sailor Jerry style (despite his name, Jerry didn’t just tattoo images associated with sailing). If you’ve already got a few Sailor Jerry-style tattoos on your body, then adding an extra one to your forearm is a no-brainer.
Tribal Forearm Tattoo

Tribal tattoos are associated with specific cultures, although that hasn’t stopped them from being adopted by more of a mainstream audience. Symbolising power, protection and strength, a tribal tattoo consists of intricate line detailing and shading, resulting in a tattoo completely unique to the owner.
Quote Forearm Tattoo

Famous quotes are a popular tattoo for men, as you may have a few words of affirmation or something said by a celebrity that you hold particularly close to your heart. By having this quote tattooed on your forearm, you can always glance down to give it a read and remind yourself of how you want to live your life if things begin to get tough.
Religious Forearm Tattoo

If you’re a man of faith, getting a religious tattoo on your forearm is your chance to express what you believe in. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a religious figure that everyone will immediately recognise, but just something that holds particular meaning for you.
Flower Forearm Tattoo

If you like floral tattoos but don’t want to get a rose, then you still have a huge choice of flowers to choose from. The flower or flowers you get tattooed on your forearm can be big or small, be black or have some colour. Flower forearm tattoos don’t necessarily have to have meaning, although you could the favourite flowers of a loved one, for example. Ancient cultures say flowers are a direct symbol of God’s contentment.
Snake Forearm Tattoo

A snake forearm tattoo can take full advantage of the space on offer by swirling its way around the forearm and up into the upper arm, as seen in this example. Said to symbolise rebirth and transformation, owing to the fact snakes shed their skin, a snake forearm tattoo is a great option for men wanting to make a change in their life.
Check out our full guide for snake tattoo ideas for more inspiration.
Portrait Forearm Tattoo

Portraits are another popular tattoo option for men. Again, the forearm is a great placement option for men who want to keep that person close to them and to show them off, as opposed to having one inked on their chest, for example. It doesn’t have to be a portrait of someone you know, it could well be a celebrity. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, for example, has portraits of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James tattooed on his arm, due to his love of basketball.
Lion Forearm Tattoo

A lion forearm tattoo is a great symbol of courage and strength, making it a popular forearm tattoo idea for men. Getting a lion tattoo on your forearm is a perfect place to show off said courage. The majority of lion forearm tattoos will be completed in black ink, but if you want to inject some colour, then you can do so in the eyes, as seen in this image example.
Skull Forearm Tattoo

It should go without saying that skull tattoos symbolise death and the afterlife, although some skull tattoo owners also claim they can represent the afterlife or rebellion. Skull forearm tattoos can come in a range of styles and sizes, whether it be a standalone skull, a skull and crossbones or something a little more imaginative such as the one seen in this image.
Bear Forearm Tattoo

A bear tattoo, like a lion, is another symbol of strength and courage – which could explain why Justin Bieber has both a bear and a lion tattooed on his chest – making them an excellent tattoo idea for men to place on their forearm. You have multiple choices when it comes to a bear forearm tattoo, you could opt for something ferocious as seen in this image, or a more timid or docile bear tattoo that could be a little less offputting for some who see it.
Koi Fish Forearm Tattoo

Almost everyone is in agreement that a Koi fish symbolises perseverance, making them a great forearm tattoo option for men who have overcome any struggles or is perhaps in the process of making changes in their life. Because of their radiant colour, a Koi fish tattoo idea is a good candidate to be tattooed with coloured ink, but if you get a good tattoo artist who can weave in plenty of detail, then a black one will still make for a great tattoo.

The biggest thing in men’s fashion right now seems to be the humble white sneaker. But are they timeless, or have they worn out their welcome?
White sneakers have always been popular, from the earlier canvas plimsolls to the most outlandish sneaker collaborations of the 2010s. But over the last few years, we’ve seen the basic white court-style sneaker take over.
These days, it’s totally acceptable wearing plain white sneakers as a smart casual option. Men even pair them with blazers and suits – and that’s become normal. Everywhere you look, there are white Common Projects and Converse x PLAY Comme des Garçons on men’s feet, in all sorts of social settings, from boardrooms to the beach.
But is it too much? Have we lost our sense of decorum when it comes to footwear? Have we relaxed our standards too much and let the white sneaker dominate when they should be reserved for more sporting occasions? Have white sneakers had their day?
DMARGE spoke with stylish men from around the globe to pick their brains on whether or not we should say goodbye to white sneakers, and we found some mixed responses – as well as some great style tips.
“Synthetic-lined sneakers can be on the nose… But white sneakers are classics, so no, they haven’t had their day,” Byron Bay-based men’s stylist and fashion expert Jeff Lack tells DMARGE.
“There’s a big swing away from styling them with so many alternates nowadays. I don’t like waste so don’t throw them out, rather keep them in good condition ‘on ice’ until the occasion presents itself.”
Jeff Lack
Baltimore native, fashion journalist and personal stylist Tony Logan (a.k.a Tony Thrifts) is a little more confident about the enduring appeal of white sneakers.
“I personally believe that white sneakers will always be a safe bet because of how versatile they are… With the right white sneaker, you can easily dress it up with a fitted pair of chinos or dress it down with a crisp pair of denim,” he explains.
Logan suggests that a common mistake men make when wearing white sneakers is choosing pants or jeans that don’t compliment their footwear.
“I know loose and baggy-fit jeans are making a comeback but I believe white sneakers look their best when paired with tailored-fit pants. I love it when my jeans or pants hit slightly above my ankle where my sock is exposed,” he shares.
“Nothing hurts my heart more than someone wearing a great sneaker but it’s drowned with baggy jeans or pants.”

The number one mistake most people make is not keeping their white sneakers clean – an issue that Toronto realtor, TV personality and style expert Rizwan Malik is passionate about.
“Personally, I think you can never go wrong with a CLEAN pair of white sneakers to complete any look. I think they’re still very much relevant, current and on-trend. They really pull together a strong look, especially during the shoulder and summer months,” he says.
“Make sure they’re clean – you want the sneaker itself to look crisp. You want to regularly wipe, whiten, and clean them.”
Rizwan Malik
Another common mistake men make with white sneakers (which might be why many of us feel as if the trend is on the nose) is that they over-correct when it comes to sneaker aesthetics, Jeff explains.
“The more simple the white sneaker – as in not too many patterns and colours – the smarter they look. This can, in turn, look a little boring with casual outfits.”
Jeff Lack
“So with casual outfits play around with sneakers with embellishments like Primabase, Von-Röutte and CLAE. It’s hard to go past Nike Air Force Ones at the entry-level and Common Projects if you’re on a trust fund.”
Tony also backs the classic Nike Air Force Ones: “most people’s entryway into sneakers starts with a classic pair of Nike Air Force Ones because of how stylish they look and how easily you can pair them with every outfit.”

“My go-to brand nowadays is Veja,” Rizwan says. “The great thing about Veja is that the shoes have a little colour on them and they’re a sustainable sneaker made of vegan leather. I own about six pairs of them!”
Alternatively, if you’re totally over white sneakers, there are plenty of other casual shoes or other colours you can wear to fill that smart casual sprezzatura void.
“I’d still stick with sneakers but try a colour like off-white, cream, pink or pale blue,” Jeff suggests. “New Balance does a collab every other day, so check out those options as an alternative to plain white. Dark-coloured sneakers are hardest to style,” he points out.
Rizwan suggests some Tod’s loafers or TOMS espadrilles: “they’re just as comfortable as sneakers and complete an outfit just the same.”
“If all-white sneakers aren’t your cup of tea I would recommend these three options. The first would be the Adidas Gazelle core black and white stripe sneaker, the second would be the white and grey New Balance 993, and lastly, the Nike Air Max 90 Infrared,” Tony offers.

TL;DR? White sneakers are still cool, including for more formal occasions, but be savvy about what kind of white sneakers you buy, what you wear them with, and making sure they’re clean. And don’t be afraid to try something different! They’re not the only option in the smart casual playbook…

At a press conference, Nick Kygrios has said he couldn’t care less if there is an investigation into him spitting in the direction of disrespectful fans because “I know what I bring to the sport.” He also said he’s sick of the media and that he’s glad they have nothing to write about today (after he beat Filip Krajinovic, without any wild incidents, in straight sets to progress into the third round of Wimbledon).
Nick Kygrios just wrecked some Wimbledon journalists. He did so in the best way a sportsman can: by performing well (so at least for now he can back up his confident claims). After he came under scrutiny for spitting in the direction of a fan in his first-round win against Paul Jubb (Kygios was fined $14,400 for the incident, and claims the fans were being disrespectful), Kygios was again asked about that same spitting incident after his second round win against Filip Krajinovic. Kygios basically told the journalists he couldn’t give a shit.
It was a drama filled day at Wimbeldon and front and centre of it all was Nick Kyrgios, even spitting at heckling spectators. #9Today pic.twitter.com/0wbYqvsobW
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) June 28, 2022
Of the spitting, Kygios said: “In the direction of one of the people disrespecting me, yes… I would not do that to someone who was supporting me.”
He said after his most recent win: “Why would you be asking me a question about two days ago? Is it because you have no story for today?”
“I’m comfortable in my own skin. Some people love to just tear me down. It’s just not possible anymore.”
Nick Kygios
He continued, throwing more shade: “I just want to give people who watch this press conference or watch my tennis to just believe in yourself, be yourself, don’t be someone else up here either. Don’t just say what you’ve been told to say.”
“I couldn’t care less if there is an investigation about me doing that (spitting), to be brutally honest with you. I know what I bring to the sport.”
“I’m one of the most important people in the sport. Do you want to speak about that? Nothing to investigate there because it’s just factual.”
Nick Kyrgios
“I’m just really sick of the media right now. They’re just nitpicking all of my matches. So today was about just being locked in. I joked with them just then ‘I love that you’ve got nothing to write about today.'”
“I just feel like people just don’t give me the respect sometimes because of other things that I do. There was just nothing the media possibly could tell me I did wrong today.”
“I just know that you can’t possibly ask me anything and stir anything up. And I love it because then you can’t write anything.”
“What are you going to say? Nothing today. Dumbfounded, all of you.”
Nick Kyrgios
Kyrgios has also pulled out of the doubles tournament to focus on giving himself the best possible shot at going as far as he can in the singles.

Paternity leave is something all new fathers should take upon the birth or adoption of their child, giving them time to bond with their child and be there to care for their partner or spouse. New dads in Australia can apply for Dad and Partner Pay, giving them a set period of time to take off from work, while still getting paid.
But for some families, the roles could be reversed from the traditional, and a mother could go back to work sooner than the father. Alternatively, for same-sex couples, one new dad may choose to take more time off than the other. With the Australian Government offering Parental Leave Pay (PLP), as opposed to maternity leave pay, this is certainly possible.
So, how much paternity leave can Australian fathers take and how much parental leave can one take? Read on to find out.
In this paternity leave guide…
How much paternity leave am I entitled to?
- 2 weeks pay
- $812.45/week before tax
However, there are criteria you need to meet in order to be eligible for the payment. These criteria include:
- You must give care to a newborn or newly adopted child
- Meet the income test – this test will look at your previous financial statements. To satisfy the income test you must have an individual adjusted taxable income of either:
- $150,000 or less in the 2019-20 financial year
- $151,350 or less in the 2020-21 financial year
- $156,647 or less in the 2021-22 financial year
- Meet the work test requirements:
- Have worked for 10 of the 13 months before the date your Dad and Partner Pay period starts
- Worked a minimum of 330 hours in the 10-month period
- Not have a gap of more than 12 weeks between each work day in the 10-month period
- Not be working and not be taking paid leave during the Dad and Partner Pay period
- Have registered or applied to register your child’s birth with your state or territory birth registry, if they’re a newborn
Dad and Partner Pay will be paid in one instalment for the 2-week period, meaning you will receive a payment of $1,624.90 before tax. Tax will be withheld at a rate of 15%.
Some employers may offer to provide a top-up payment on top of your Dad and Partner Pay, which can make up the difference between the government payment you receive and your usual weekly wage. This is completely fine for your employer to do and doesn’t affect your eligibility.
How much paid parental leave do Australians get?
- 12 weeks (60 payable days), plus 30 day of flexible paid parental leave
- $812.45 per week, before tax
The Australian Government says “Eligible employees who are the primary carer of a newborn or newly adopted child get up to 18 weeks parental leave pay, PLP, (split over two separate periods), which is paid at the National Minimum Wage.”
With this wording, it could well be possible that a father can take 18 weeks of pay if they are to be the primary caregiver of the newborn or newly adopted child. However, in the majority of cases, it will be the mother who takes the 18 weeks, with the father taking 2 weeks.
Employees who take PLP can claim for 1 set period and 1 flexible period.
The first period of paid parental leave is a set period of 12 weeks, which must be taken within 12 months of the child being born or adopted.
Following this 12-week period, the flexible period of paid parental leave comes into effect. Flexible parental leave pay gives you up to 30 days of paid leave, which can be taken whenever you want, it’s down to you to negotiate with your employer.
The flexible parental leave period of 30 days must be taken within 24 months of the child being born or adopted.
How is parental leave pay paid?
The Australian Government will pay your employer, who will then pass the parental leave pay payments onto you. You are entitled to receive parental leave pay from both the Australian Government and your employer.
Your employer will withhold Pay As You Go tax at the usual rate of 15% and doesn’t have to make additional superannuation payments, but they are entitled to do so if they wish.
If you are self-employed or unemployed, your parental leave pay will be paid to you by Services Australia. Payments will be made every two weeks and PAYG tax will be deducted.
New proposal for paternity leave
The new Labor Government has put forward plans to increase the amount of paid parental leave for new dads to 20 weeks, over the current 2-week system. The new proposal is in response to the new working from home model being adopted by a large proportion of workers since the Covid global pandemic, and fathers expressing a greater desire to be more involved with their child within the first two years of its life.

Ever wanted to roleplay as Leonardo DiCaprio (or, more specifically, Jordan Belfort)? Well, you’re in luck: one of the sumptuous mansions featured in The Wolf Of Wall Street is up for sale.
The 2013 film was shot at a number of stunning locations across the East Coast of the US, but this property – the focus of the paddock scene where Manny Riskin (Jon Favreau) and ‘Mad’ Max Belfort (Rob Reiner) try and convince DiCaprio’s Belfort to make a deal with the SEC – is a particular gem.
It’s called 324 Calf Farm Road Mill Neck, and it’s one of Long Island’s most extravagant properties. 33 miles away from New York City and 45 miles away from the Hamptons, it’s hard to think that this is in New York.

Built by racehorse breeder Ralph Bianculli in 2010 (hence the huge paddock), the property spans 5 acres and redefines the term ‘chintzy’. It’s weird to think it’s barely 12 years old, actually – looks like an 80s fever dream with all that stucco.
Highlights include a circular front courtyard with a fountain; an attached oversized four-car garage; a cooks garden with huge bluestone patios; an inground, heated, saltwater pool with a separate spa; an outdoor kitchen and bar; a waterfall cascading down a rocky hillside into a koi pond; and a grand stone, bridal, double staircase ascending to the house, the listing shares.
Its most ridiculous feature? Six fireplaces. More than enough to burn all your Stratton Oakmont paperwork in. They’re asking $10 million – you might have to sell all your Steve Madden to afford it…

The Wolf Of Wall Street isn’t the only production to be shot at the property. An episode of the popular modern Sherlock Holmes TV series Elementary (starring Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller) was shot here, as was the Roger Ailes miniseries The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe.
Rusty even lived in the manor for four months during shooting. Talk about Hollywood royalty…
