Counterintuitive Coffee Hack Every Person Over 30 Needs To Know
Counterintuitive Coffee Hack Every Person Over 30 Needs To Know

Why do we love coffee so much? You could say it’s because it tastes great, or because the ritual of coffee – cafés, dining, socialising – is an essential part of the modern human experience. But another reason we love drinking coffee so much is because it’s a quick and easy source of caffeine.Caffeine is the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world and has a myriad of effects: it can reduce fatigue and drowsiness; improve your reaction time and concentration; improve athletic performance and can even prevent infant breathing disorders. No wonder people often claim they’ve got a coffee addiction, even though caffeine and coffee aren’t inherently addictive in of themselves. One thing caffeine’s not supposed to be good for, however, is headaches. Conventional wisdom says that if you’ve got a headache, you should steer clear of coffee because not only will it dehydrate you but because the caffeine will make your pain worse. But it turns out a cup of coffee could be just what you need to combat a headache or if you’re in need of some pain relief.

Image: Getty
A wealth of scientific literature, such as these 2011 and 2016 studies or this 2019 article, suggests that not only is caffeine in of itself a (mild) painkiller, but it can boost the effectiveness of other common painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or paracetamol (a.k.a. acetaminophen) by as much as 40%. It’s why many stronger painkillers actually include a bit of caffeine in their formulation.RELATED: This Unexpected Health Risk Could Affect Thousands Of Australian MenOn top of this, the widely-held belief that coffee will actually dehydrate you is something of a misnomer. Actually, coffee will keep you hydrated – and regardless of your ailment, staying hydrated is important. What tends to mess people up is when they consume too much caffeine, get giddy, then crash.“Drinking caffeine-containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle doesn’t cause fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested. While caffeinated drinks may have a mild diuretic effect – meaning that they may cause the need to urinate – they don’t appear to increase the risk of dehydration,” the Mayo Clinic’s Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. relates. So whether you’ve got some back pain, a migraine or a killer hangover – which, if you’re no longer in your 20s and all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, might be a more common occurrence – taking your Advil with a hot cup of java might actually be a great idea.
Image: Getty
But before you go reaching for your French press, it’s worth pointing out that caffeine can also make some forms of pain worse.Caffeine contracts the blood vessels that surround your brain, and when you stop taking it or its effects wear off, they expand again – which can be painful, especially if you already have a headache or if you’re already in pain. On top of this, caffeine might not be addictive per se but the effects of caffeine withdrawal can also cause you pain, too. The answer then, logically, is to keep swilling coffee for as long as you’re in pain so you can ride that out (note: we are not scientists).Coffee itself might still be a form of hydration but you’re almost certainly better off drinking just water if you’re seriously dehydrated. Coffee can also make you poop, which if you’re already in pain, might be an additional inconvenience. So while a cup of coffee might not be a silver bullet when it comes to pain relief, it’s hardly something you should avoid if you’re struggling with pain, including headaches.

‘New York To London In 3.5 Hours’: United Airlines Does The Unthinkable

After the dream of the Concorde went up in smoke at the turn of the century, United Airlines has now done the unthinkable – it is now trying to bring back supersonic travel.United Airlines has announced a deal with Boom Supersonic to add supersonic aircraft to its fleet. This comes alongside what the airline has called a cooperative sustainability initiative. United Airlines also says the move will facilitate a leap forward in returning supersonic speeds to aviation, claiming flights could speed from New York to London in 3.5 hours (with current technology this is a 7 hour trip).Watch Concord take off and reach supersonic speed.

United will purchase 15 of Boom’s ‘Overture’ airliners, once Overture meets United’s demanding safety, operating and sustainability requirements, the airline announced last week, with an option for an extra 35 aircraft.“The companies will work together on meeting those requirements before delivery,” United Airlines wrote in a media release. “Once operational, Overture is expected to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net-zero carbon from day one, optimized to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It is slated to roll out in 2025, fly in 2026 and expected to carry passengers by 2029. United and Boom will also work together to accelerate production of greater supplies of SAF.”

“United continues on its trajectory to build a more innovative, sustainable airline and today’s advancements in technology are making it more viable for that to include supersonic planes. Boom’s vision for the future of commercial aviation, combined with the industry’s most robust route network in the world, will give business and leisure travellers access to a stellar flight experience,” United CEO Scott Kirby said. “Our mission has always been about connecting people and now working with Boom, we’ll be able to do that on an even greater scale.”Able to fly at Mach 1.7 – twice the speed of today’s fastest airliners – Overture can connect more than 500 destinations in nearly half the time. Among the many future potential routes for United are Newark to London in just three and a half hours, Newark to Frankfurt in four hours and San Francisco to Tokyo in just six hours.Overture will also be designed with features like in-seat entertainment, plentiful personal space, and contactless technology.“The world’s first purchase agreement for net-zero carbon supersonic aircraft marks a significant step toward our mission to create a more accessible world,” said Blake Scholl, Boom Supersonic founder and CEO. “United and Boom share a common purpose—to unite the world safely and sustainably. At speeds twice as fast, United passengers will experience all the advantages of life lived in person, from deeper, more productive business relationships to longer, more relaxing vacations to far-off destinations.”Underneath Boom Supersonic’s announcement of the news on Twitter, various social media users expressed their thoughts. The main concerns raised? The price of tickets and the historical problems with supersonic travel.

“Will never happen the price for this will be incredible and limited to the very rich,” one user wrote. “I call Bullshit on vapourware.”Another tweeted: “I bet the ticket will begin from $500 economic – $1500 a premium.”Others asked questions like: “What’ll you do about the noise? Genuine question. There’s a reason Concorde was restricted to the likes of Transatlantic routes, and several reasons as to why it ended up as a niche aircraft – and noise was a factor in both.”

Yet others talked about the past: “Hmmm the return of supersonic travel you mean? Looks a lot like the one that was designed in the 60’s that was retired in 2003.”

“Looks like Concorde does because engineering. The new technology is going to be in the engines primarily and materials – the same places where the big gains in subsonic planes happened the last 50 years.”

All other issues aside: flying from New York to London in 3 or so hours is tantalising.

American Comedian Bo Burnham Puts Your Efforts During Lockdown To Utter Shame
American Comedian Bo Burnham Puts Your Efforts During Lockdown To Utter Shame

Master of self-skewering, American comedian Bo Burnham has just released a Netflix specialInside – that has air-fried the rest of the world’s lockdown efforts. While the rest of us slumped in despair (or, as was the case across much of Australia, whinged while the rest of the world had it worse), Burnham slumped in despair… and got paid for it.Filmed on his own in his room over the course of the last year, Inside is a masterpiece of self-awareness, masochism and parody.

As The Ringer puts it, “Inside is less a new frontier than a return to form. The auteur has never been known for traditional stand-up in the sense of monologuing into a microphone; he first rose to fame as a teenager for parody songs uploaded to YouTube, and his ensuing stage act has always used music as a vehicle for commentary.”

“In 2016, after the release of the special Make Happy, Burnham announced an indefinite pause on live performing, citing anxiety. Since then, Burnham has directed a feature film, acted in films like Promising Young Woman, and helmed specials from fellow comics Jerrod Carmichael and Chris Rock. (Burnham also codirected Make Happy with Christopher Storer.) With Inside, Burnham turns his lens back on himself.”

Burnham puts into words a lot of what the locked-down world has been feeling, and perfectly sums up the absurdity of modern life (from hypocritical celebrities to sexting to ‘twitching’ to Instagram). He also keeps things real about mental health – something many people will feel ~seen~ by. As the Sydney Morning Herald reports, “No-frills it may be, but Inside might just be the essential document of our times. COVID as a threat to life barely figures, but the impacts on the state of mind are obvious.”Without giving away too much, it ends as follows:“Burnham worked on the special for long enough that luck and science gave him an actual ending: a world to come back to. In Inside’s final moments, a long-haired, white-clad Burnham walks out of the room and into a spotlight, to cheers and applause. It’s not a happy scene, or a triumphant one. Before long, Burnham tries to go back in, only to find the door is locked; his warm welcome quickly curdles into laughter,” (The Ringer).

MINI’s ‘Off Road’ Countryman Is Australia’s Most Stylish Plug-in Hybrid
MINI’s ‘Off Road’ Countryman Is Australia’s Most Stylish Plug-in Hybrid

Trying to find a car that’s not only good for the environment but is also practical and stylish is a tall order right now in Australia.

The natural choice would be to find an electric vehicle, but the issue is that most EVs on the market remain rather cost-prohibitive and many aren’t that practical. More to the point, they’re just not a feasible option for many Aussies: if you don’t have a garage or somewhere you can charge your car, owning an EV doesn’t make sense.

The next logical choice would be to choose a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which combine the environmental and performance advantages of an EV with the flexibility and contingency of a conventional petrol-powered car… But that’s easier said than done. There aren’t that many PHEVs on the market Down Under, and most are large, cumbersome and ugly-looking.

Enter the MINI Countryman Cooper S E ALL4, or if you prefer, the Countryman Hybrid: not only is it the smallest PHEV on sale in Australia right now, but it’s also one of the most stylish, practical and luxurious (as well as being surprisingly good value). On top of that, it’s got enough off-road credentials and performance chops to delight even the most discerning automotive enthusiast… Like myself.

I had the chance to take MINI’s new electrified darling for a spin for a week, and I was thoroughly impressed.

Let’s start with some vital statistics. The Countryman Hybrid features a 65kW electric motor which is powered by a 7.6kWh li-ion battery pack. On top of this, it has a 100kW 1.5L inline-three connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor powers the rear wheels and the petrol engine the front wheels, meaning you’ve got all-wheel drive without the need for a driveshaft and joining clutch – very clever. This means the Hybrid actually boasts more killer wasps than the comparable entirely petrol-powered Countryman Cooper S ALL4 (165kW versus 141kW), and despite the weight premium, also matches its 6.8sec 0-100km/h time.

What’s more impressive is its fuel economy. The Countryman Hybrid sips a paltry 2.4L per 100km, has a combined range of 498km and can drive 40km as a fully electric car using only the rear motor – more than enough for the average commute. Regenerative braking also helps it recover charge as you’re pootling around, and it’s able to charge back up to 80 per cent from a regular household socket in just over three hours. I can tell you, my wallet thanked me driving this car.

Put your foot down and it’s got plenty of pep – the instant torque and linear power delivery of electric drive is addictive. The petrol engine will kick in to give you extra grunt or to charge the battery, but it’s never very obtrusive. The MINI Countryman Hybrid handles well and feels very capable. The car’s capable all-wheel drive means you can take it places that other EVs or PHEVs can’t go, too. Any outdated misconceptions that MINIs are somehow ‘hairdresser’s cars’ need to be left at the doorstep.

Both inside and out, it’s a nice thing to behold. The exterior is appropriately sporty but not full of itself: not cute per se, but not snarling like many other performance and premium marques’ cars are. The racing stripes are a must.

The interior is a real plus; generously appointed and smartly packaged, it’s exceedingly comfortable with acres of space and high-quality materials. The infotainment system is easy to use thanks to a large touch screen and an intuitive scroll wheel.

It’s hard to forget what kind of car you’re driving, too. From British flag motifs in the seat headrests, brake lights and even some of the alloy wheel options to the retro-styled toggle switches on the centre console and map lights and of course, that characteristic rounded design language, the Countryman Hybrid is aesthetically and ergonomically a cut above the competition.

In short, it’s both style and substance.

I spend most of my time in Sydney’s Inner West – notorious for its narrow streets and lack of parking spaces. In this environment, the MINI Countryman Hybrid comes into its own, its compact dimensions and high driving position making navigating and parking a breeze. It’s also stylish enough to impress even the trendiest Newtown bohemians.

More pertinently, it’s the perfect option for someone who lives in the inner city and wants to reduce their environmental footprint but doesn’t have the ability to charge an EV. Many properties in inner-city Australia don’t have garages or places where you can easily charge an EV. So having a small PHEV like the MINI Countryman Hybrid is the next best thing – charge it when you can, and it’s entirely possible to run it entirely as an EV.

Then, when you can take it out on the open road, it impresses with its capable performance, and if you want to take it off the beaten track, it can do that too. Whilst doing all that in luxury and classic British sporting style.

All in all, the MINI Countryman Hybrid isn’t just Australia’s most stylish PHEV. It’s also a car for all people: from architects to adventurers, from families to free spirits, it’s an incredibly compelling vehicle that’s a joy to drive and be in.

Find out more about the MINI Countryman Hybrid online here.

German Fitness Phenomenon Reveals Calf Training Trick Most Gym-Goers Miss
German Fitness Phenomenon Reveals Calf Training Trick Most Gym-Goers Miss

Calves. They’re not the sexiest part of the human body (stereotypically). But wouldn’t you know it? According to a recent (informal) survey by German fitness phenomenon Jo Lindner, they are actually a deal-breaker for a number of women (see: ‘No Calves, No Date,’: Youtube Video Uncovers What Women Love Most About Men In The Gym).

News enough to strike fear into the hearts of the best of us. But never fear. If your leg peaches are flatter than a 90s supermodel’s stomach, there is a solution. Jo Lindner, German fitness phenomenon and inspiration guru is here to show you how to work your calves like crazy.

Though the calf raise is a well-known activity, a recent video which Lindner posted to Instagram shows you three simple ways to shake things up, thus (in theory) increasing your gains.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jo Lindner (@joesthetics)

Posted last Monday for the viewing of his 4.1 million Instagram followers, the video shows Lindner demonstrating why you shouldn’t mindlessly smash out your calf raises with your foot in one position. In fact, it’s not just the amount of weight you can vary (with drop sets and the like); you can also vary your stance – something many people neglect.

“There are different stances, we can stay neutral like this, we can stand like this right [pointing toes a bit outwards] or we can stand like this [standing mildly pigeon toed]” Lindner said.

“You should do all of them.”

He also advises: “Make sure you have a nice stretch and a nice squeeze.”

He captioned the video: “Calves Motivation. Happy Monday bro.”

Viewers lapped up the fitness inspiration but were also quite concerned about Lindner’s choice in footwear, some calling it sacrilege to be using J Balvin Jordans for a workout.

“The jordan bro…the jordan…”, one wrote.

“Man why you do that with Nike ?????”, commented another.

“Those creases…”

This isn’t the first time Lindner has given fans a heads up on how to work their calves. As DMARGE reported in December, Lindner has also shared the following advice on how to get big ass calves: “It’s very important you don’t lean back.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jo Lindner (@joesthetics)

Instead, you must lean over the weight, which makes it much harder, and “only use your calves” rather than involving other muscle groups to get the job done.

Now sit and give us 20…

Watch how to get huge like Jo Lindner

Foreigners Under Increased Surveillance In Bali After Debaucherous Acts Cause Social Media Fury
Foreigners Under Increased Surveillance In Bali After Debaucherous Acts Cause Social Media Fury

Since the Australian government decided to ban its citizens from travelling abroad in 2020, a tourniquet has been strapped around one of Bali’s biggest arms of tourism revenue (Australians).

In the meantime, however (in the absence of hammered hooligans tearing around Kuta on scooters), Balinese authorities appear to be facing a new challenge: ‘porn villa’ videos.

Police in Bali say they are watching foreign nationals closely – and asking local tourism workers to do the same – in response to recent pornographic content made on the island.

Last week, a number of provocative videos went viral. Screengrabs show captions like, “Welcome to our porn villa,” being overlayed over the viral clips.

The videos reportedly include foreigners and were taken at a North Kuta villa. According to media outlet Coconuts, the videos caused a stir on Balinese social media and have led to at least one official asking the public to be vigilant and to help get rid of pornographers from the island.

“That effort now includes the Bali Police,” Coconuts reports, “who said they will be stepping up supervision of foreigners to sustain order in the province.”

According to Coconuts, Bali Police spokesman Syamsi said police would warn villa and hotel owners about this latest turn of events, to prevent future public disturbances.

“We will also work with relevant stakeholders to raise awareness and educate at Bali’s entry points like the airport, immigration office, ports, or other facilities often visited by foreign nationals,” Syamsi said, Coconuts reports.

According to The Bali Post, “the way of education” is to put up banners that state that in Indonesia pornography is a criminal act and there is a threat of criminal punishment.

The Bali Post also reported that foreign visitors may soon be required to include social media account data when filling out immigration forms.

This isn’t the first time a raunchy clip has sparked outrage in Bali – a porn video circulated widely in April was widely condemned, not just because of the content, but because it was taken along the popular Mount Batur hiking trail.

RELATED: Australian Tourists Are Being Warned To Stay Away From This Morbid Balinese Attraction

Immigration records suggest two of the debaucherous five may have already left Bali (and authorities may be considering blacklisting them). Authorities are also currently attempting to figure out the real names of the three remaining people, one of whom is believed to be an Indonesian woman.

Coconuts reports that the head of the Bali office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Jamaruli Manihuruk has said “Kevin” and “Celine” (the user names of the two porn villa stars that have left the country) were from Germany.

“Authorities said they arrived in Bali at either the end of April or early May, and intended to make a porn video on the island. The official said they did not report back to the villa owner when they left,” (Coconuts).

This is not the first time in recent months that travelling pornographers have caused a stir. A group of women was arrested in Dubai earlier this year after an outdoor nude photoshoot, rumoured to be part of a publicity stunt for an adult website, was captured from a neighbouring building.
