From James Bond to Basil Fawlty the English are known more for their dry wit and emotional repression than they are for dating.
And don’t even get us started on Hugh Grant.
But while there’s a time and a place for bumbling charm, there is also a salacious new hookup scene developing in London driven by Tinder, Bumble, Grindr and a host more apps (and the fact that every backpacker in the world sees it as a rite of passage).
However, before you get swiping, any ‘cultural anthropologist’ looking to experience London’s love-scene had better wrap their heads around a few pieces of London etiquette.
To that end: we thought we’d give you a list of the key ~suavity~ rules you need to know before hooking up with a Londoner.
Don’t send selfies
Forget dick pics: according to James Preece, London’s top dating coach, Londoner’s are as horrified by the rest of the world’s wanton obsession with selfies as Parisiens are by The Keto Diet, writing (in his Dating Etiquette Guide), “There is nothing attractive about posing in a mirror with a camera phone.”
“Not only will you look desperate but it gives the impression you don’t have any friends to take photos for you.”
While we can’t guarantee he speaks for every single one of the 8.136 million Londoners, we agree.
If you just want a casual hook up, don’t plan your date during the day
This one is fairly self-explanatory, but Genevieve Wheeler, writing for Elite Daily, puts it magnificently (so we’ll allow her to explain it again).
“If someone says, ‘Wow, 2 p.m. is so early. Can we meet at 11[pm] instead?’ It’s way more indicative that they’re looking for a hookup than something like, ‘I’ve got lunch plans during the day, but can we meet for dinner?'”
Be discerning with your dating app photos
No one wants to see you pose with your ‘hectic’ biceps or double-parked with two pints at the best of times, let alone when they are trying to date you. So embrace the London minimalist vibe (trust us, you’ll thank us for this when it comes time to find an apartment too).
Don’t brag
Whether it’s on Tinder or in real life, many Londoners have a self-effacing complex to the point where what would be seen as healthy self-esteem in Australia comes across as arrogant in England’s Big Smoke.
Be honest about where you work
Let’s be real: if you’re on a Work and Holiday visa in London you probably work in a pub. And while neither us (nor the majority of Londoners) will judge you for this, if you tell them you work at Goldman Sachs then pay for dinner with your Commonwealth bank travel card they might smell a rat.
Don’t jump the gun
Londoners love thinking about sex but loathe talking about it. They also despise toilet gags, if Mashable is to be believed. This means you must walk a ‘humour tightrope’ between Game of Thrones and Family Guy. Or, if all else fails; stick to gallows humour and you’ll be fine.
Don’t whinge
Though the English love a good spot of weather-bashing one of your primary assets as an Aussie will be your (relative) sunny side up attitude to life. So don’t ruin it.
Don’t get too personal
Brits tend to open up to co-workers and Uber drivers more so than friends and family. So don’t go poking around too much unless you don’t mind them throwing smoke and joking rather than going ~deep~.
A final piece of advice
This should go without saying but judging by the mountains of cliche internet-guides out there it needs repeating: judge each interaction on its own merits, and remember that (thankfully) not everyone is a walking stereotype.

From Blade Runner to Minority Report through Star Wars and the Jetsons – it depends on your age and whether you have any taste – flying cars have been a twinkle in many a script-writer’s eye for as long as anyone cares to remember.
Yet here we are, waiting for the train, bus, or for Chet or Dan to pick us up in the Uber in his firmly-grounded Nissan. Various companies have been toying with the idea for years, with varying amounts of credibility. Uber, for example, is targeting a flying car release for 2023 and Airbus has built one vehicle that’s undergone a successful test flight.
But finally there’s a flying car project associated with a couple of names you want to believe in. Porsche and Boeing have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to “explore the premium urban air mobility market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace.”
This seems like a lot of unnecessary words to explain that they’re thinking about putting cars in the sky. For the avoidance of doubt, they add that they will be looking at “a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle”.
That’s a flying car. A Porsche flying car, no less.
Under the partnership, the brands will combine their strengths and insights to study the possibility of creating these vehicles in the future. So it’s a long way from production and importantly, there is no way to tell right now if there is even a market for it.
It is precisely that market issue that Boeing and Porsche are working towards with a team to be created to address aspects of this urban air mobility and analyse the market potential for it. Currently, Porsche estimates that the market will pick up speed by 2025, by which time flying vehicles will transport people around cities more quickly and efficiently.
So all the billions being spent on bridge and tunnel programs around the world might soon prove to be questionable investments.
This announcement did not include any indication as to cost or what other resources the brands would throw at the venture. There is not even a set date for a prototype or a price range.
But a Porsche flying car? Sign us up.

From the nightclubs to beach, Miami is drenched with electric colours, forever staking its claim as one of the liveliest locales on the planet. It has also been harder to get to for Australians than it is to get from Wynyard to Central on a rainy day (a damn tough feat). While it remains an epic journey, it is now a little easier for lie-flat flyers (and also, for that matter, economy flyers) to get there with Qantas, who yesterday announced it will give its customers access to more than 50 new routes and almost 30 new destinations across North America, one of which is Miami.

This comes as Qantas expands its codeshare with American Airlines on services from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD). With these new destinations, Qantas has its code on American Airlines services to more than 100 destinations and almost 200 routes in the US, in total. From Dallas-Fort Worth, the new codeshare destinations include Spokane, Washington; Charleston, South Carolina; Dayton, Ohio; Savannah, Georgia; and Vail/Eagle, Colorado. As for Chicago O’Hare: the new codeshare routes include New York’s La Guardia and Newark airports; Boston, Massachusetts; Miami, Florida; Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington D.C.; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Charlotte, North Carolina.American Airlines also expanded their codeshare on the following routes operated by Qantas, for a new total of 32 codeshare routes between Los Angeles and Sydney, Dallas-Fort Worth and Sydney, San Francisco and Melbourne, San Francisco and Brisbane and Chicago O’Hare and Brisbane.Tino La Spina, Qantas International CEO said of the changes, “Our joint business with American Airlines has allowed us to offer new routes, better flight connections and more benefits for our frequent flyers.”
“Qantas Frequent Flyers will now earn as many points when they travel to the US with American Airlines as they do when they travel with Qantas.”
“The US remains one of the most popular destinations on our international network and next year we’ll connect Australia and Chicago with direct flights for the first time, as well as launch flights from Brisbane to San Francisco,” he added.
“The new codeshare routes will provide even greater access for our frequent flyers to onward destinations across American Airlines’ extensive network which will benefit customers travelling for business or holidays.”
Bridget Blaise-Shamai, President of the AAdvantage program and Vice President of Customer Loyalty and Insights for American also chimed in, hinting at the possibilities these changes will bring Aussie travellers.
“Our customers are drawn to the natural beauty and cultural richness Australia and New Zealand offer, so we’re excited to bring them even more frequent flyer benefits and expanded codeshare opportunities for their adventures.”
In addition to the expanded codeshare and new routes to the US, Qantas’ also announced the roll out of significantly improved frequent flyer benefits in collaboration with American Airlines, which will include higher earn rates for points and status credits on each other’s networks – a change facilitated by the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) recent (and final) approval of Qantas and American Airlines’ joint business.

Specifically, Qantas Frequent Flyers can now earn up to 3.5 times more Qantas Points on American Airlines flights between Australia and the United States (for example, Qantas Frequent Flyers travelling from Sydney to Los Angeles in Economy may now earn 6,750 Qantas Points, up from 1,875 Qantas Points previously in certain fare classes). They can also earn up to 4.5 times more Status Credits on American Airlines flights between Australia and the United States. For example, Qantas Frequent Flyers travelling from Sydney to Los Angeles in Economy may now earn 90 Status Credits, up from 20 Status Credits previously in certain fare classes. Not to mention: you can now earn up to 4 times more Status Credits on American Airlines flights for travel within the United States/Canada, and use Qantas Points for Classic Flights Rewards on American Airlines flights in Premium Economy for the first time, in addition to Economy, Business and First Class.Miami awaits.

The stylish sportsmen gracing billboards and glossy magazines with their dapper looks tend to come from a handful of select games. It’s tennis; it’s golf; it’s motorsport or football.
It’s not, to borrow a phrase, cricket. Those white outfits and baggy greens don’t lend themselves to cool. So it’s perhaps surprising that Hublot’s best-looking Big Bang yet was designed by a former star cricketer.
Kevin Pietersen MBE was a batsman on the English Cricket Team between 2005 and 2014. He still holds the record for being the fastest player to cross 2,000 runs in one-day cricket. The Guardian even called him ‘Britain’s greatest batsman’ back in 2012, although his partnership with Hublot actually came about not because of his swashbuckling work on the field but for his conservation efforts.
Last year Kevin founded SORAI – Save Our Rhino Africa India – which supports the various organisations, like rangers, nutritionists and ecologists who everyday work towards saving and caring for rhinos across Africa and Asia. The global initiative is designed to raise public awareness and funds to build up the resources and equipment needed for these rhino conservation activities.
This is where Hublot and its new Big Bang come in. Hublot partnered with Pietersen and SORAI to create the Big Bang Unico Sorai from which a proportion of the money from sales will be directly paid to Care for Wild to help look after orphaned baby rhinos. Part of the money will also go towards the South African National Parks agency to reinforce their nocturnal surveillance capabilities. But more about the watch and why we think it’s the best Big Bang yet.
The 45-mm micro-blasted beige ceramic dial mimics the colours of the African bush with contrasting black pushers and hardware. The skeleton dial is finished in matt beige and features a white rhino at the 9 o’clock position. The movement that powers the piece is Hublot’s self-winding HUB1242 which gives 72 hours of power reserve.
The watch comes with two NATO straps, one in a camouflage style while the other is made of rubber. The camo strap is made with selective technology that produces motifs that are perfectly drawn with an accuracy of a tenth of a millimeter — a first in the watchmaking world, according to Hublot.
Only 100 limited editions of the watch will be created and will set you back US$25,000 (AUD$31,100). Not only is a great looking watch, but one that will go towards saving the rhino, which is at risk of extinction by 2025.

Let’s be real: not everything makes as much sense as white sneakers and a navy suit. In fact, sometimes, despite how ‘together’ you look on the outside, you can’t help but wonder what the point is of everything.
The chunk of rock we call home. The ball of flame that will eventually subsume our solar system. The forward-facing camera of an Instagram model’s iPhone.
You get the picture.
While these thoughts cross most minds at some point, some suffer worse than others, and some are faced with a host more challenges as biological as they are mental – topics scientists (let alone us) are yet to completely understand.
The common feature, however, is that you probably classify these thoughts as ‘issues’, and assume there is something wrong with thinking them.
But the truth is – whether you occasionally stare out the bus window and question the daily mass migration from the city to the suburbs or whether you feel lonely in a crowd – this is not illogical.
The world is absurd. Work is relentless. Sydney’s public transport is a joke.
When you notice this, it sucks – but you are accurately perceiving reality. That is not to say you shouldn’t seek help (quite the contrary – the idea is that in recognising these feelings as widespread people will feel more comfortable talking about them, which is often the first stage to recovery) but it is to say there is nothing wrong with you for thinking them.
what you call a nervous breakdown i call oops, accidentally saw things as they are
— so sad today (@sosadtoday) June 25, 2018
It would be bizarre not to worry about the point of life (or not to curse Sydney trains).
Of course, sharing these thoughts and emotions can be hard, especially in a society which has traditionally repressed them, particularly among men. But as individuals like Barry Du Bois and organisations like R U Ok? point out, attitudes are finally (if slowly) changing.
In a recent exchange with Barry, The Living Room favourite who we have previously interviewed about his battle with depression and who now bravely faces cancer, we asked how to find that balance between pushing yourself to achieve your goals and cutting yourself a bit of slack and recognising when you need to take a moment.
Barry’s sentiment can be summed up in the following line: “I think society has changed a lot over the last two decades – but there’s still a long way to go.”
As for what needs to change on an individual level?
“I feel people like to put diseases and illnesses in boxes. The simple fact is that there’s no square boxes – there’s round pegs and square holes. Health is an individual thing and it’s your own responsibility to understand what is best for your body and your life.”
“One person’s opinion of pressure will be incredibly different to what someone else may think and therefore they will receive that pressure… differently. I believe conversation and human contact is incredibly important, challenging each other with discussion but overall care for each other as a village and community is the best thing for everyone,” Barry adds.
This comes on the back of leading life insurance specialist TAL’s Future of Better Health Event panel discussion, of which Barry says, “Despite the core understanding of health continuing to develop, the underlying principle of ensuring you look after your whole self remains the core way for people to keep healthy.”
“It was great to be part of the panel discussion at TAL’s Future of Better Health Event and understand how TAL is committed to helping Australians live their life through good health by looking after their whole selves – from their physical, mental and financial wellbeing.”
As for helping someone with depression, Barry (in a previous interview) gave us a number of pointers, the first of which is to be wary of giving advice: “When I was depressed, everybody gave me all this advice on books, tablets, health and fitness, and all those things can no doubt be great – but when you mentally feel weak or insignificant, someone telling you what do just amplifies how weak you feel.”
For concerned friends, this means you should keep things simple, and focus on the following.
- Don’t always try and give a depressed (or potentially depressed) friend advice
- Ask them a question
- Listen to them, and empathise
- Follow up
Barry also points out that helping a mate overcome an irrational train of thought is rarely achieved by pointing out the inconsistencies in what they are saying, but rather empathising, listening and then choosing one of their problems to help with.
“What you need to do is listen and say, ‘I can hear you’ve got a problem: is this something you can handle, or do you need me to help you?’”
And although you may be tempted to recommend a self-help book or podcast, Barry warns that this can give the wrong impression.
“If you say to a depressed person, ‘You’re depressed; you wanna read this book;’ you’re not helping them at all – you’re just saying, ‘I recognise there’s something wrong with you and I can’t help you – but maybe you can help yourself if you read this book.’”
Instead, follow the strategies outlined above, ask questions, invest time (and emotion), and show that you really care with actions.

While there is a whole world of men’s grooming products to get stuck into, an absolute essential and the entry-point into the industry for men to arm themselves with is a face moisturizer.
You probably underestimate the daily strain placed upon your skin. Whether you’re pulling a razor across your jawline, soaking up a bit of evening sun or tackling an early morning after a late-night, staving away the effects of dryness with a good men’s face moisturizer is imperative if you want to stay looking fresh and hydrated.
What type of moisturizer do I need?
To truly get the most out of the best men’s moisturizers, you’ll need to understand a little about which category your skin falls into to get the best results. In general, there are five – oily, dry, combination, sensitive, and normal.
- Oily Skin: This type of skin tends to be shiny or greasy
- Dry Skin: You’ll know if you have dry skin because it will be rough and flaky in various places
- Combination Skin: Combination skin is where you have a combination of both oily and dry skin. You’ll most likely have oily skin on the cheeks and dry skin around the T-zone
- Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin can react badly to certain chemicals and scents, so sensitive skin face moisturisers use specific ingredients to avoid this happening
- Normal Skin: Normal skin should show less visible signs of dehydration, and respond positively to a broader range of ingredients
If you’re unsure what type of skin you have, then it’s recommended you visit either a health professional or a dedicated skincare company store so they can perform tests.
However, if you do know your skin type, then check out our round-up of the best face moisturizers for men in the list below.

Who wore it better has been a red carpet style game since before there were style magazines. Admittedly the competitors are usually female celebrities as they are usually the ones to take risks with their outfits. It’s a bit hard to compare men’s tuxedo’s when realistically they all look the same, some are just tailored better than others. But sometimes there comes an outfit that is so similar that we would be doing you a disservice if we didn’t discuss the similarities. You may remember last week we blue our minds at Joel Edgerton’s blue suit that he wore to the premiere of The King in New York. Well, it clearly had an impact on his co-star Timothée Chalamet who rocked up to the Australian premiere of the same film in an all-blue number. Now usually we could say this is just a coincidence but Joel & Timothée are both stars in the film and both attended the same premiere so clearly they are sharing style tips.Joel wore his blue outfit as a suit with a blue jacket and matching shirt and pants. Timothée puts an edgier spin on it as it isn’t a full suit but more a shirt and pant combination. His long bright blue shirt is buttoned to the top and untucked from his matching pants. The bright blue is quite confronting but somehow it works for the actor when it probably wouldn’t on any normal person. Timothée also gives himself some height with heeled black boots that he has shown off by rolling up the pants into messy cuffs which does give it a relaxed look that compliments his grown-out wild hairstyle. The outfit is the product of Haider Ackerman and is part of his 2020 collection. It is not the first time Timothée has worn an outfit from the designer after he opted for a silver suit at the Venice premiere of The King. Like his blue outfit, this suit was all one colour and featured a collarless shell beneath with a double-banded belt. Naturally his fans and the internet went wild over it and Timothée must have been hoping for the same reaction with this blue number. It begs the question though, did he already pick out this blue outfit and Joel beat him to it, or was it the over way around?

The actor has quickly become one to watch on the red carpet, who could forget his glitter harness at the Golden Globes earlier this year? Even on his current promotional tour he was spotted in a Louis Vuitton sequined glitter hoodie in London and in South Korea he was in splattered overalls and chunky boots. It certainly makes him interesting to watch and we are now expecting male celebrities to step their game up. Can’t let the millennial actors have all the fun after all.The Oscar-nominated actor still has plenty more red carpets to strut his style on with Little Women completed and hitting cinemas in December and his role in the remake of Dune is currently in post-production and slated for release next year. We will start up a betting pool for what colour he will wear next. Our guess is on something outlandish.

Releasing a new collection for any watch brand brings with it a unique challenge: how do you merge the traditional core identity with an upgraded innovative aesthetic? Bell & Ross seem to have struck gold with their latest BR05 collection that not only remains faithful to the brand but is a unique piece in its own right.
The BR05 collection has taken the rounded-corner case shape from the BR01 collection as well as large lume-treated hands with four prominent screws holding the case together that can be found in both the BR01 and BR03 collections. Arabic numbers at the quarter can also be found on the BR05 which is similar to many designs in the Bell & Ross family. The round bezel found on the BR01 and BR03 has been updated to have the rounded-corner square form part of the bezel rather than the actual case body.
The bracelet integrating directly into the case is a departure from the traditional Bell & Ross look but harks back to the style design of the Seventies. The watch is also smaller than some of the other collections with a 40mm case with an angular satin-finished surface that is perfectly flat and is designed to be a wear-everywhere watch for business professionals.
The basic steel model comes in three different dial colours, silver grey, navy blue, and deep black and is complemented by another model with a skeleton dial and mechanism. The skeleton comes complete with a skeletonised dial for unobstructed views of the automatic winding BR-CAL.322 and is limited to just 500 pieces. All the steel pieces are available with either a satin-polished steel bracelet or a ribbed rubber strap.
The final model is for those that are a little bit flashier and is made with an 18K rose gold case and bracelet with black dial. Prices start at US$4,400 for the steel dial on rubber straps going up to US$4,900 for the steel bracelet. The skeleton model starts at US$5,900 while the 18K rose gold case will set you back a cool US$21,500 for a rubber strap going all the way up to $32,500 on the gold bracelet.
The collection is an attractive step forward for the traditional aviation watch brand with the new watches showing Bell & Ross to be a serious contender to the broader market.
