Alexander Skarsgård’s ‘The Northman’ Workout Will Get You ‘Viking Strong’
Alexander Skarsgård’s ‘The Northman’ Workout Will Get You ‘Viking Strong’

It’s no secret that Hollywood actors need to undergo some brutal training to get prepared for various movie roles – just take a look at Christian Bale or virtually the entire male Marvel cast – and the latest star to display some serious commitment to the gym for a movie role is Alexander Skarsgård.

The 45-year-old Swedish actor stars in The Northman, an epic historical fiction film that sees Skarsgård play Amleth, a figure in Scandinavian legend who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his parents. Naturally, a Nordic Viking who has to scale mountains and swing heavy weapons to murder anyone who gets in his way, will require some serious strength and intimidating size.

Whilst Alexander Skarsgård wasn’t exactly out of shape before preparing for the role, he did need to put on some muscle. And, judging by a still from the movie currently circulating the web (posted above), it’s abundantly clear that’s exactly what he did. But, just how did he do it?

According to Variety, he enlisted the services of personal trainer Magnus Lygdback, who Skarsgård previously worked with to get into shape for the 2019 movie, Tarzan. Speaking to Variety, Lygdback said Skarsgård’s character in the movie has a “spirit animal [of] a wolf and a bear so we wanted to really build that into the character.” The goal was to create a character with the agility of a wolf, but the physical size of a bear. Not necessarily an easy task.

To achieve such a figure, Esquire adds Skarsgård had to hit the gym six days a week for six months, with each session lasting around an hour. Lygdback said he doesn’t bother with gruelling 2-3 hour sessions because “all you do after the first hour is just start to break down your body.”

He elaborates by saying “I like to do a 4-day split normally with my male actors. Which means you target each muscle group much harder and then allow it to rest while training other body parts. Strength training is the main focus.”

There is often debate among the fitness community as to which training method is the best. Some, like Lygdback, choose to target specific muscle groups on separate days. Others will employ a range of push-pull workouts – push one day, pull the next – followed by a leg day. This is repeated twice a week to complete six days of training.

“We trained for 6 months to prep. If you get less than 3 months then you can’t do a build-up and a cutting cycle, you have to do one long lean mass gaining cutting cycle. When you get more than 3 months, like we did, you can do 2 training cycles. The build-up and the cutting.”

He continues, “We did less HIIT training this time and more strength training. We did lower reps to get stronger.”

What Marcus means here refers to the longheld belief and knowledge that lifting heavier loads, with lower reps, is what is required to build strength, as opposed to size. As we’ve discussed before, using information provided by Healthline, “For muscular strength, you reduce the number of reps in a set (exercise volume) while increasing the intensity (adding heavier weights). Typically, the rest period between sets for strength is 3 to 5 minutes.”

“We integrated a lot of shoulder and hip stability/mobility work to prepare him for swinging an axe and running around. Alex is the hardest worker in the room, that’s why he looks that way. He makes my job very easy. He should have the credit for this, not me.”

Of course, while Alexader Skarsgård did have a world-class personal trainer and time to dedicate to the gym, it goes to show that nobody can expect results overnight. If you can commit to a good few months, or even a few years of a well-rounded strength training program – and an equally impressive meal plan – you too will eventually notice some dramatic results.

Australian Politicians Told To Stop Using Iconic Aussie Phrase
Australian Politicians Told To Stop Using Iconic Aussie Phrase

Australia. It’s a country like no other with some truly unique (and sometimes hilarious) customs. A country where it’s common to see spiders, snakes and kangaroos; where people love Vegemite and everyone uses the word “mate.”

Or at least – everyone used to love the word mate…

New South Wales (NSW) government ministers, led by Premier Dominic Perrottet, recently undertook workplace behaviour training sessions and were reportedly told to refrain from using “mate” in parliament.

According to The Daily Telegraph, many ministers were outraged when told they should no longer say ‘mate’ and questioned exactly what about the word is so offensive.

One unnamed minister told The Daily Telegraph, “I use ‘mate’ all the time – it’s as Australian as you can get. How can it be offensive?” while another said it’s “PC insanity.”

Of course, Twitter users had a field day when the news broke that NSW ministers were no longer allowed to say ‘mate’, with many saying it’s simply ‘un-Australian’.

Twitter user Julie Munno commented “I have no words” while user Renee Charlize wrote a classic Aussie phrase in response: “Yeah… NAH”.

János Németh, another Twitter user made a very valid point and Tweeted, “Utter stupidity! Is this the most important issue the NSW Parliament has to deal with?”

Overall, no matter your opinion on the current NSW government, you have to admit that banning the word ‘mate’ is a tad ridiculous. You won’t see us here at DMARGE refraining from saying mate anytime soon…

Cartier Invented The Watch With The Santos de Cartier – & It’s Still The Best
Cartier Invented The Watch With The Santos de Cartier – & It’s Still The Best

The following article was produced in partnership with Cartier.

Cartier – it’s a name that’s known across the globe. Founded in Paris in 1847, Cartier has long been regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands.

Of course, most people know Cartier for its jewellery, but Cartier is also one of the world’s most in-demand and influential watchmakers. Indeed, it’s Cartier that can claim perhaps the most impressive boast in all of watchmaking: they literally invented the wristwatch.

Let’s paint the picture. It’s 1901 in Paris: a dynamic, exciting time, where innovators like Gustave Eiffel and Jules Verne rubbed shoulders. Another innovator who called Paris home, the enterprising Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, complained to his friend Louis Cartier that he found it hard to check the time on his pocket watch while flying.

Louis (who would also go on to invent another of Cartier’s most iconic watches, the Tank) was inspired by his friend’s predicament, and three years later, created the first-ever purpose-designed modern wristwatch – for Santos-Dumont. Naturally, the watch came to be known by its first legendary wearer and has since gone on to become a legend in its own right.

118 years later, the Santos de Cartier remains one of the most stylish watches for men on the planet. Versatile, elegant and innovative, it’s just like Santos-Dumont himself – and in 2022, it’s never been better.

Alberto Santos-Dumont might be best known for his role in the development of aviation, but he was also known for his unique approach to fashion. When it came to the way he dressed, he was both utilitarian and dapper: he’d sew loops and hooks into his suits for parachute rigging, but he’d never be seen without his Panama hat. He was a daredevil, yes, but a dandy too.

The Santos de Cartier also has this dual nature. Many of its design features are industrial and minimalistic – take the exposed screws on its bezel and bracelet, or its unusual square shape. At the same time, it’s exceedingly elegant in the finest Cartier tradition: sharp Roman numerals, elegant hands, that classic spinel on the crown… It’s both very dressy and very sporty, making it the perfect watch for all occasions.

Adding to its versatility is its new Cartier QuickSwitch system. This invisible mechanism blends into the structure of the case and makes it a cinch to swap straps – say from a classic leather strap to a more casual integrated bracelet.

Speaking of integrated bracelets, they boast Cartier’s SmartLink system, which lets you adjust the length of the bracelet to the nearest link without the use of a tool. It might be nice to visit a Cartier boutique but being able to do such a thing on the fly is pretty useful. It’d get action man Santos-Dumont’s tick of approval, that’s for sure.

It’s quick and easy to change the Santos de Cartier’s strap thanks to the QuickSwitch system. Image: DMARGE

Santos-Dumont’s watch might have been a manual-wound proposition but the 2022 Santos de Cartier is powered by the in-house calibre 1847 MC, which features anti-magnetic nickel phosphorus components as well as a shield made from a paramagnetic alloy, rendering the movement effectively resistant to magnetic fields – a challenge even modern watch wearers struggle with. It’s also water-resistant to 100m despite its minimal case thickness, adding to its sporty bona fides.

The purity of the Santos de Cartier’s design makes it perfectly suited to host a wide variety of complications and case materials – and Cartier doesn’t disappoint in this department. While it’s hard to beat the classic stainless steel, the Santos de Cartier also looks amazing in yellow gold, pink gold and two-tone steel and gold.

New for 2022 are two-tone steel and blue PVD variants with unique grooved bezels that look particularly sporty and demonstrate how even 118 years on, the inimitable Santos de Cartier’s still got plenty of tricks up its proverbial sleeve.

All in all, the Cartier Santos de Cartier is a legend for a reason. It’s truly remarkable how relevant and exciting the world’s first-ever wristwatch continues to be – there’s a reason it continues to captivate watch fans, innovators, style icons and high-flyers all these years later.

The only question is this: do you want to add your adventures to the pages of its legend? You know what Alberto Santos-Dumont would say…

Who Is Daniel Mac? The ‘What Do You Do For A Living?’ TikTok Star
Who Is Daniel Mac? The ‘What Do You Do For A Living?’ TikTok Star

TikTok user Daniel Mac has become a viral sensation on both TikTok and Instagram thanks to his “What do you do for a living?” videos. But who is he, how did his videos cause him to become famous and what does he do for a living himself? Allow us to explain all.

Daniel Mac Quick Facts:

Name: Daniel MacDonald
Age: 24 (unconfirmed)

Who is Daniel Mac?

Daniel Mac – full name Daniel MacDonald – is a content creator from the United States. He primarily uses TikTok as his platform of choice and the majority of his videos see him walking up to people driving luxurious cars and asking them “What do you do for a living?”

When he first conceived the idea of asking people what they do for a living, he was living in Tucson, Arizona and so rarely saw exotic cars driving the streets. However, upon securing a new job, he moved to Dallas, Texas and started seeing more prestige and luxurious cars around on the roads, so he decided to put his idea into action.

How did Daniel Mac become famous?

Daniel Mac has previously spoken to LadBible, telling the online publication, “

I started having the idea during the summer [2020], prior to my first video. My first video ever was the very end of September 2020.”

“I had just graduated from college – I went to the University of Arizona and studied finance and was moving out to Dallas.”

“I went on a little camping trip to some of the National Parks with some friends and actually brought the idea up to them while we were on this long two-week trip.

“I kind of carried it with me over the next couple of months but really didn’t have a good enough area with Ferraris and Lamborghinis and whatnot.”

It was following his move to Dallas, Texas that he recorded and posted his first video which shot him to stardom.

He says he was with a friend walking the streets of Dallas when he saw a Ferrari, a Lamborghini and an Audi R8 in the same parking lot, and decided it was “now or never.” He recorded the video, posted it the next day and it received more than one million likes overnight.

Daniel Mac has since quit his full-time job to pursue content creation.

The vast majority of people he records in their cars now recognise him immediately.

Men Are Paying $75,000 To Be 7.5cm Taller
Men Are Paying $75,000 To Be 7.5cm Taller

Short men are often perceived as drawing the short straw. They get mocked by dating apps, they’re less likely to become CEOs (according to some studies) and they are apparently more likely to commit violent crimes.

It’s not surprising then, that many short men wish they were taller.

What is surprising is the lengths some short men are going to in order to get taller. In fact, hundreds of men a year are paying surgeons to cut open their femurs, insert rods inside them, and then spend months recovering.

After the operation, the rod, which is controlled by a remote, increases in length, millimetre by millimetre, until the leg is 3 inches (about 7.62cm) longer (some even get the operation done twice, once on their femurs and then a second time on their tibias, increasing their height by 6 inches).

According to heightlengthening.com, “It is not recommended to perform lengthening on the femurs and tibias simultaneously due to higher complication rates including fat embolism, joint contracture and nerve damage; however, a staged procedure of both can be performed with 3-4 weeks in between each procedure.”

These kinds of procedures, though they have come a long way since their origins, are understandably intimidating. They started off a hundred-odd years ago as a way to give war victims (or car crash victims) legs of the same length and weren’t something people just elected to do until the last 10 years or so. According to the BBC, “the technique was pioneered by Gavril Ilizarov, a Soviet doctor treating injured soldiers returning from World War Two.”

“While the surgery has evolved over the last 70 years, many of the principles remain the same.”

BBC

When you think about the risks (even though the risk of complications is apparently less than 5% combined) and the pain, it’s not hard to see why it took so long for people to start doing this for cosmetic reasons. Even though one surgeon who does the procedure claims “most of these risks” (speaking about compartment syndrome, infection, blood clots, joint stiffness, hardware failure, poor bone development and early consolidation) are “less than 5% combined” it’s easy to see why it’s intimidating. It’s also reportedly quite a long and painful operation.

On heightlengthening.com‘s FAQ page it states: “Pain is relative, but you will have enough pain medications to make the recovery process very comfortable for you.”

Patient testimony, however, seems to indicate that the physical discomfort can be tough.

Customers spend up to a year recovering. This starts off with the help of devices like wheelchairs and ‘walkers.’ Patients also need physical therapy and x-rays to keep track of progress as the bone heals around the (lengthening) rod. The rod is eventually removed when the bone is strong enough (and the bone has been grown to the desired new length).

If everything goes well, patients can run after 8 months and play competitive sport after one year, one surgeon who performs the procedure, claims. Little detailed information is available on how, exactly, the procedure impacts one’s athletic performance, but common sense suggests it likely has a negative impact.

Things can go wrong too. One man who the BBC reported on in 2020 ended up with a three-inch gap, for instance.

“My legs were being pulled apart, but my bones never caught up. I had a three inch gap…just two sticks of bone and a metal bar in between,” he said.

It’s also quite expensive. Buzzfeed News recently spoke to one patient who elected to get this surgery, as well as the surgeon – @heightlengthening – who performed it. According to their report, getting the 3 inch lengthening done costs $75,000 (AU $106,443). That’s the same price as an Audi A5 Sportback.

Or if you want to do the 6-inch option (via two surgeries three to four weeks apart), @heightlengthening says it’s $155,000 (AU $220,000). That’s almost the price of a brand new Porsche 911…

So, even if the surgeon says it’s a less than 5% risk of complications, why do guys risk their physical integrity and athletic ability (and spend so much money), just to gain a couple of inches in height? According to the man Buzzfeed News interviewed, for him, it was as much a mental health decision as anything else.

The man told said he thought of the procedure as sickening when he first heard about it in high school. But aged 35 he came around to it.

“I was not treated with respect,” he told Buzzfeed News, speaking about his life pre-surgery.

“At every single workplace I’ve been in, there’ve been several situations where people commented on my height to discredit me entirely as a person.”

“I was waking up two hours before my alarm every day just to walk around the neighbourhood and cry.”

He then had a lightbulb moment where he realised he could just solve the problem with money, he said. This gave him a goal to work towards.

“When I realized what was really holding me back was the obstacle of money, I was like, ‘Oh, it’s just a game. If I can get $75,000, then I’m done feeling like this.’”

He’s not alone, either. The BBC reports that hundreds of people around the world are getting this kind of operation every year.

Surgeon @heightlengthening (Dr. Shahab Mahboubian) believes interest has been on the increase too during the pandemic, telling Buzzfeed News, “Since a lot of people had more time on their hands, they opted to undergo their procedure.”

Dr. Mahboubian acknowledges the potential complications of the surgery but claims that if his patients listen to him and do their proper therapy they’ll be fine.

Dr. Mahboubian says he starts his patients on antibiotics right away so as to avoid infection, puts them on blood thinners because there’s a risk of blood clots and advises them to use walkers because there is a risk the rods (or as he calls them, nails) could break.

“As some patients lengthen, they could make too much bone. Others may not make enough bone,” he also told Buzzfeed News, explaining that this is why his patients get regular x-rays to monitor progress.

Now… please excuse us while we go and take a lie down. That’s enough mind-blowing information to absorb for one day.

Finally, A Television That Combines Art & Entertainment Perfectly
Finally, A Television That Combines Art & Entertainment Perfectly

The following article was sponsored by Samsung

Televisions undoubtedly work on a ‘bigger is better’ mission statement. Whilst television manufacturers strive to keep bezels as slim as possible, this is only because they want to ensure the actual screen can be as big as possible. While a 42 or 48-inch TV used to be considered the sweet spot, we as consumers now yearn to mount 65, 75 or even 85-inch beasts on our walls so that we really can bring the cinema experience home.

With the sheer size exhibited by televisions today, it only stands to reason that many of us will want to come up with some ingenious methods to help hide them as best as possible. Maybe yours is in a completely separate room from the main living room so guests don’t have to see it. Or, perhaps, your TV rises out of a cabinet at the end of your bed. Great ideas, but they require the TV to be removed from the central room of the house.

Samsung has developed the ultimate solution and it’s called The Frame. The Frame was first released in 2017, but the very latest 2021 model is easily the best yet, as it takes advantage of some of Samsung’s very latest TV screen technology and is even more intuitive when revealing its party trick.

What’s so special about The Frame TV?

So, what is Samsung’s The Frame? It’s a television and a picture frame mashed up into one incredibly gorgeous package. When you’re viewing the TV – we had the personal pleasure of hanging the 75-inch version on our wall – you feast your eyes on an incredible picture, taking full advantage of the QLED 4K screen.

The actual design of The Frame delivers what is expected of a television. What you get in the box is a slim TV complete with a black bezel and a Slim-Fit wall-mount. However, Samsung offers a range of clip-on frames (sold separately, we were given the dark brown option) that allow you to tailor The Frame to match the décor of whichever room you put it in. This element of customisability really elevates the overall look of the TV and sells the picture frame illusion.

Almost unlimited picture options

When you’re not watching TV or movies, The Frame morphs into a picture frame, capable of displaying a wide variety of famous works of art, or alternatively, you can upload your own photos. Remember those digital photo frames that were all the rage? Think of this as one of those, but on steroids.

Once hung on the wall (you can have it standing on its feet, but wall-mounting is the way to go to really unleash the full potential) you can have The Frame display a huge range of artwork via the Samsung Art Store.

A neat touch from Samsung here is the use of different matte layouts and colours which help further the illusion that you have a regular piece of art hanging on your wall and not a several thousand dollar TV.

What happens when you turn it off

While Art Mode uses minimal power compared to TV Mode, if left for a period of inactivity, The Frame will also automatically turn itself off. However, it only goes into a sort of idle mode. When it detects movement nearby, it will automatically display a work of art or a photo you’ve uploaded in a similar vein to when you slack off at work and your boss starts walking over to your desk so you need to look busy.

You are able to turn the TV completely off, too, to help save even more power. Just remember, this will turn The Frame into what is obviously a TV, so loses the illusion.

No wires, no worries

It’s not just the capability to display artwork when not in use that Samsung has focused on, either. But, to help further the illusion that you just have a work of art on your wall, even more, Samsung has included the much-loved One Connect box that is included with other TVs across the range.

The One Connect box sees all connectivity – HDMI, USB, Ethernet etc – handled by a separate box, instead of having all those connections around the back of the TV. This not only helps to keep the TV as slim as possible, making it easier to mount on a wall, but means that you just have one cable coming out the back of the TV.

What we particularly love about its incorporation with The Frame is that Samsung has adopted One Clear Cable, a single, clear fibre optic cable that runs the power, connections and has its own dedicated, cut-out pathway to follow in the back of the TV, so you’ll barely notice any cords when it’s hanging up.

Another nifty little trick of Samsung’s is the inclusion of a solar-powered remote control. This means no more disposable batteries, making it slightly more eco-friendly than your run-of-the-mill TV remote. If on the rare occasion your room isn’t exposed to natural sunlight, not to worry, Samsung’s SolarCell TV remote can charge via artificial light in your room too. But seeing as a fully charged battery can last up to 2 years, you won’t need to think about it at all.

Eye-catching artwork, engaging picture quality

Of course, you’re going to spend your money on The Frame not just for its art displaying credentials, but to use it as an actual TV. When you do so, you get to experience Samsung’s own Tizen operating system, and it’s pretty damn impressive. Tizen supports all the major apps – Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney Plus, to name a few – and you’re even presented with recommended content based on your viewing habits.

As for the picture you’re exposed to when viewing content, there’s not much to fault. While Samsung’s absolute very best TV technology is reserved for its true flagship models, The Frame is on-par with the South Korean company’s flagship models in the mid-range.

Blacks are deep and whites are bright, ensuring contrast levels remain strong no matter what you’re watching.

Naturally, to get the very best out of The Frame, you will need to feed it with 4K content. Fortunately, the issues that used to plague 4K TVs when they were first released have pretty much been eradicated, now that streaming services including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus all offer 4K content, either with a standard subscription or as part of a slightly more expensive subscription. For true technology geeks, you may be a little bummed to know Dolby Vision isn’t supported on The Frame, although HDR10+ and HLG HDR codecs are.

As for sound, the same can be said of The Frame as can pretty much any other modern TV: it has a strong set of speakers on it, however, if you want a more immersive home cinema sound set up, then you’re going to want to add a compatible soundbar.

Framing The Frame

So, should you buy Samsung’s The Frame TV? If you want a TV unlike anything else on the market and you want to have something truly versatile hanging on your wall, then yes, absolutely.

If the absolute pinnacle of 2021/22 TV picture quality is of utmost importance to you, then we’d suggest you look at Samsung’s Neo QLED flagship series.

Pricing for The Frame in Australia starts at $1,399 RRP for the 43-inch model. The 75-inch model we have costs $2,299 RRP while the massive 85-inch variant tops out at $3,799 RRP.

And when you consider that a ‘real’ work of art that you can display on The Frame could set you back hundreds of thousands or even millions, then it becomes an absolute bargain.

For more information and to experience The Frame for yourself, visit Samsung.

Amber Heard Allegedly Gets ‘Just Desserts’ In Aquaman 2
Amber Heard Allegedly Gets ‘Just Desserts’ In Aquaman 2

In the last week or so, it’s been practically impossible to have not seen or heard anything about the defamation trial currently underway in the US between former married couple, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

In case you somehow know nothing about the trial, essentially, Depp is suing Heard for defamation as she penned an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018 that Depp claims ruined his career.

This is because the article is about Heard’s experience with domestic abuse and it’s Depp’s belief that the article – although it never mentions him by name – alludes that Depp was violent and abusive towards Heard. Depp maintains he never abused Heard; in fact, he claims she abused him.

It’s been a messy case, to say the least, but one of the main issues, since this whole debacle began, is the legions and legions of Depp fans who believe the film production company, Warner Bros. has been extremely hypocritical.

Why? Well, because back in 2020, Warner Bros. essentially fired Depp from the third Fantastic Beasts film because of all the controversy surrounding him but didn’t fire Heard from the Aquaman sequel, despite there being a fair amount of controversy surrounding her too; you can read more about this here.

Since then, fans have demanded Warner Bros. fire Heard through both social media campaigns and a change.org petition – which now has nearly three million signatures – but it was seemingly to no avail. In 2021, when Aquaman 2 producer, Peter Safran was asked whether Heard would be fired during an episode of the Deadline Hero Nation podcast, he replied:

“I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure. You gotta do what’s best for the movie. We felt that if it’s James Wan and Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard.”

However, now it looks like Warner Bros. may have succumbed somewhat to that ‘fan pressure’, as Safran put it. According to a Tweet from Grace Randolph, an American film critic, Heard will have less than ten minutes of screen time in the Aquaman sequel.

Of course, maybe Heard was always only going to have ten minutes of screen time – but this would be odd as she does play the titular character’s love interest and was heavily featured in the first Aquaman film.

Many are speculating that Warner Bros. has deliberately cut Heard’s role to the bare minimum after all the bad press Heard received after the trial began just a few weeks ago. One Twitter user wrote, “I wonder if that was the plan from the start of that is what her role was reduced to after everything that’s happened?” while another simply commented, “damage control?”

Many other Twitter users chimed in saying that even if Warner Bros have deliberately cut down Heard’s screen time, they’re, firstly, still not interested in seeing Aquaman 2 because she’s still in it, and, secondly, why didn’t they just recast her role?

One Twitter user wrote, “10 minutes too much”, while another questioned, “If it truly is less than 10 minutes, shouldn’t they just reshoot her scenes?” Twitter user FFKBullets wrote, “I don’t care I am not seeing this damn movie as long as [Heard] is in it.”

Only time will tell whether the Aquaman sequel does only feature Heard onscreen for only ten minutes; and we may never know whether her role was severely reduced due to the ongoing legal battle between her and her ex-husband, Depp.

Logan Paul turned his hand to amateur boxing, with his first white-collar boxing match being against Joe Weller. Following the bout, British YouTube and rapper KSI challenged Logan Paul to a boxing match, which ended up seeing Logan Paul and his brother Jake Paul fight KSI and his brother Deji in two white-collar boxing matches.

KSI won the match against Logan Paul following a majority draw decision, with one judge scoring 58-57 in favour of KSI.

Logan Paul was then eligible to fight in professional boxing matches, and his first proper bout was once again against KSI. The fight was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California (now known as the Crypto.com Arena) on November 9th 2019. KSI once again won the fight following a split decision vote.

An exhibition boxing match was then held on June 6th 2021 between Logan Paul and Floyd Mayweather Jr. at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Many spectators expected the former five-division world champion Mayweather Jr. to defeat Logan Paul with ease.

However, Paul initiated a number of clinches during the match, which wasn’t received well by the crowd. The match ended went with the full distance, but no winner was ultimately decided. The Mayweather vs Paul boxing match generated $50 million in revenue.

Paul has appeared in a number of films and television shows, usually as cameo appearances, but occasionally as the main star. He has appeared in The Thinning and its sequel, The Thinning: New World Order, which were both YouTube Premium exclusive movies.

Can Elon Musk Turn Twitter – Silicon Valley’s ‘Clown Car’ – Into a Tesla?
Can Elon Musk Turn Twitter – Silicon Valley’s ‘Clown Car’ – Into a Tesla?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Elon Musk paying a considerable amount of money – a casual $44 billion – to buy 100% of Twitter and take the company private.

While every news outlet has a red-hot take on what this means for democracy, free speech, crypto and Tesla shares, the real question is; What will Elon actually do with the platform?

To answer that question and understand what might go down at Twitter HQ over the next few weeks, we need to understand what the biggest problems with Twitter are.

Famously, Facebook (sorry… Meta*) CEO Mark Zuckerberg once said:

“Twitter is such a mess – it’s like they drove a clown car into a gold mine and fell in.”

Mark Zuckerberg

It was an open secret among Silicon Valley’s tech bros that Twitter’s management somehow kept just enough money flowing in despite almost 0 major improvements being made over its 15 year life-span.

It’s not just The Zuck and his tech bros who think that Twitter has some major issues. According to public opinion, the biggest problems with Twitter are: misinformation, harassment and abuse, censorship, followed by spam and illegal content. Regardless of whether you love him, hate him – Musk has a substantial track record of doing things that other people just can’t.

So, what are the main ways that Elon Musk can transform Silicon Valley’s “clown car” into a Tesla?

1) Getting Rid Of Spam

The first thing on Musk’s list, and something he’s mentioned in the past, is getting rid of spam. Practically everyone that has ever used Twitter agrees that spam and the bots that spread it are public enemy number one.

However, getting rid of spam might require using human authentication, meaning that users will have to upload some form of identification to continue using the platform. Ironically, this is almost completely at odds with Musk’s other main priority of “more free speech,” because the right to anonymity and online privacy goes hand in hand with keeping speech properly free.

2) More Free Speech

After proclaiming himself a “free speech absolutist,” it will be interesting to see how Musk balances requiring human authentication without taking away from the privacy that makes the Twitter platform unique from its competitors.

Twitter has a long history of catering to “left-leaning” voices and censoring right-wing ones – something that Republicans have made a lot of fuss about. Most famously, Twitter removed former-President Donald Trump from the platform at the beginning of 2021 – so it will be really interesting to see how Musk goes about balancing the need to protect the public from dangerous actors whilst also keeping things legitimately free…

According to Musk’s own words, he won’t be making any moves to censor anyone, because keeping his worst critics on the platform is what makes speech free.

3) Creating Real Transparency

Facebook whistleblower Francis Haugen, who made it public that Zuckerberg knowingly profited from extreme content and causing wide-spread harm, says that Elon Musk has a real opportunity to do something that other social media platforms just won’t do.

In an interview with Fox Business, Haugen said that the “number one” thing Musk can do to improve Twitter is to “institute real transparency.” Unlike Meta, which keeps its algorithm behind closed doors, Musk has hinted that he wants to make the Twitter algorithm open source, which would help people understand how the platform shares and spreads information.

According to Haugen, this sort of transparency is “how Elon can prove that he’s acting in a way that’s aligned with the public good and it’s how he builds trust in his ability to run the system.”

4) Removing Ads & Adding New Features

If we can believe Musk’s own words, the next big step in fixing Twitter is removing corporate influence from the platform. In a now-deleted Tweet Musk floated the idea of removing all ads from Twitter, writing, “The power of corporations to dictate policy is greatly enhanced if Twitter depends on advertising money to survive.”
At the time of writing, the only thing that keeps Twitter afloat is its advertising revenue. In Q4 2021, Twitter reported that advertising revenue made up $1.41 billion of the company’s total $1.57 billion in revenue for that quarter. In November last year , the company rolled out its first premium subscription package, Twitter Blue, which costs $3 USD a month for access to “premium features.”

Musk has previously expressed his support for an overall subscription model, but wants it to be cheaper than it is now and also wants there be actual features. Twitter Blue has already copped a lot of criticism for failing to offer users anything of substance, so Musk will have to really step up his game and offer something truly unique if he wants to keep people on the platform…
