Key Pandemic Lessons Australia Can Learn From Europe’s Summer
Key Pandemic Lessons Australia Can Learn From Europe’s Summer

Like an influencer to a precariously photogenic clifftop, Europeans were this year drawn to the beach in spite of government warnings the pandemic was ongoing.Perhaps not coincidentally, we are now seeing The Virus rear its ugly head again, everywhere from Spain to England. As The New York Times reported yesterday, Europe, which once compared favorably to the United States in its handling of the pandemic, “is being engulfed by a second wave.”

“With an average of more than 100,000 new infections per day over the past week, Europe now accounts for about one-third of new cases reported worldwide.”

This comes after several European countries shrugged off their lockdowns and flung open their borders, engendering the sense people could return to normal (Czech nudists, for instance, were told they could keep their tops off but must keep their masks on).Since then, “In the face of intense political pressures, European leaders have been reluctant to impose new, economically damaging lockdowns, often opting for the lightest possible measures,” The New York Times reports.

However, Spaniards’ summer sojourns and Britons’ beach bumbles may not have played such an elemental role in the resurgence of cases as you might think. As The New York Times reports, “Public health experts have long warned that the virus could roar back when the days grew colder, driving people indoors, where the risk of transmission is far greater.”Is it possible then, for those of us on the other side of the world now watching the thermometer go up, to enjoy summer? The answer is a yes – with caveats. To help us do just that are a number of summer pandemic lessons we ought to learn from Europe. The first is that effective contact tracing and a clear roadmap for an impatient population are both crucial, if we want to avoid becoming an inpatient population…Traveller illustrates this point with the case study of Spain: “On September 8, Spain notched up a new milestone when it became the first European country to record more than half a million coronavirus cases. With infection rates higher than France, the UK and every other European country, coronavirus tests have indicated positive for almost one in 10 of those tested.”“Government officials have pointed the finger at the country’s youth who have been partying, socialising, celebrating with friends and families and disregarding rules around social distancing. Infections spread in the home are believed to be responsible for around 50 per cent of cases.”“Spain’s response to the crisis has been piecemeal, with much of the fine detail left to regional jurisdictions. Track and trace procedures are neither uniform nor rigorous. When someone tests positive, authorities have difficulty tracing their contacts. Many parts of the country, such as Madrid, where cases have been rising rapidly, have been slow to reimpose lockdown measures such as limiting gatherings to a maximum of 10.”“The lesson,” according to Traveller, is that “the leisure time and conviviality that come with summer holidays are the time when people are most likely to intermingle and ignore social distancing.” This means “effective contact tracing, a single set of coronavirus protocols that applies to a whole country, effective communication and a road map that gives the population a clear picture of what lies ahead” are essential.RELATED: Iconic Photo ‘Reveals’ Why Sex Pilgrims Are Flocking To This Italian IslandAnother point to note is that Spain’s surge in infection numbers has predominately been driven by younger people (in late March the average age of COVID-19 cases was 59; in mid-September, it was 38). This has been mirrored all over Europe.

The lesson from this is that social distancing, masks, testing and contact tracing should strictly apply – equally – to everyone – even those less vulnerable should they catch the virus.Another lesson to take on board is not to let up lockdowns too quickly (something Australia doesn’t appear to be in any danger of). According to Italy’s health experts, Traveller relates, “the country’s relative success is due to the country’s rigorous lockdown, imposed earlier and for longer than in France and Spain.”“Italy only relaxed its tight restrictions on September 20 to allow up to 1000 fans to attend sporting events. In France meanwhile, as many as 5000 people per venue are allowed in shows, cinemas and casinos and stadiums have been permitted to host the same number since July 11,” (Traveller).RELATED: Iconic French Riviera Photo Reveals The Freedom Europeans Have No One Else DoesThat said, there is also an argument that – to a small degree – there is an element of Europe’s bold (if not defiant) attitude we can learn from too. Purely economically speaking, providing the case numbers don’t rise so high as to overwhelm the hospital system (which would then screw the economy even worse), it would benefit Australia to ease restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so.Mental health workers have warned of the consequences of the lockdown in Melbourne, urging officials to let up as soon as safely (and sensibly) possible. As the ABC reports, “When the Victorian Government locked down several public housing towers, Lifeline saw a 22 per cent increase in calls from the state.”

“When stage 4 restrictions were announced, the calls from Victorians jumped by 30 per cent.”

Finally, rigorous airport testing is another feature we’d be mad to stop doing, if countries like the UK in Europe’s experience is anything to go by.

Though travellers arriving at UK airports from overseas are required to self-isolate for two weeks (unless they are coming from a country on the exemption list), the UK government’s own scientific advisory group has reported that less than 20 per cent comply, Traveller reports.“Coupled with the lack of airport testing, compliance breaches allow the virus to spread. It’s also been established that those who break the self-isolation protocols are unlikely to report those who they might have come into contact with in order to lessen the severity of the breach,” (Traveller).Who knows, perhaps, despite our deepest suspicions, a heady beach club (with marked out social distancing) in Bondi is just what we need?

Genius Reddit Thread Solves Hardest ‘Emotional Dilemma’ Any Man Will Face
Genius Reddit Thread Solves Hardest ‘Emotional Dilemma’ Any Man Will Face

‘Emotional horniness’ is a slippery concept to grasp. But it’s a state many are finding themselves in this year.

A trending Reddit thread in the AskMen community recently articulated the feeling beautifully.

“What do you do when you’re emotionally horny?” the post’s author asked.

“I can take care of the physical. Men, we have it easy. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. But when you’re emotionally drained, it’s not like you can touch yourself to emulate a female. I want to be understood, feel giddy, learn about someone, have a bonding type of feeling, etc.”

“It’s not a physical problem I have, it’s a mental thing I want taken care of. A quick release will not help me. I’m looking for someone to help me with ideas, career, future, problems, issues etc.”

“What do I do to take care of that! You can’t jerk off your mind.”

DMARGE got in touch with a dating professional to bring you expert solutions, inspired by the ‘touching’ responses Reddit users came up with.

“Emotional horny? Do you mean lonely? You want emotional intimacy with someone. That is a universal human need. Completely normal,” one user wrote.

Another backed this up, claiming: “’Emotional horny’ is the most dude way of saying ‘lonely’ I’ve ever seen.”

“A heart boner, if you will,” commented another.

“I legit just cry sometimes lmao.”

Samantha Jayne, Relationship Expert and Advisor to Channel 10’s The Bachelor, told DMARGE emotional horniness is more specific than loneliness, and that Australia (and much of the world at large) is now experiencing it on an unprecedented scale, thanks to the rise of technology, as well as the distancing demands of 2020.

“Emotional horniness is a deep desire to want to feel loved, validated and special. It doesn’t matter who you are, everyone wants someone to have their back… lean on and share the simple pleasures with.”

“Good times and bad times. Without an emotional connection, you might as well be dating a robot, it’s empty and meh!”

“Just like sexual horniness emotional horniness can be overwhelming and leave [you] on edge,” Jayne said.

If your needs aren’t being met it can lead to feeling depressed and, according to Jayne, “really is just another fancy word for loneliness but loneliness on a relationship level.”

“Even people with FWB experience emotional horniness because meaningless sex is everywhere.”

Fortunately, if you’re feeling emotionally horny, there are some positive actions you can take to remedy your situation, Jayne told us.

“Get in touch with feeling good within yourself, meet your needs personally. I don’t mean masturbate like crazy because that’s never going to work and will probably just lead to blisters and emptiness.”

“What I mean is fill your own emotional void, figure out what is going on. Why are you feeling empty; lonely? Is there pain that needs to be healed? Stop destructive behaviour such as alcohol, drugs, overeating or excessive porn. Instead get emotionally connected with friends, family and people that make you feel good. Learn to trust people and yourself.”

“Become the best version of you, exercise, get outdoors, start reading inspirational books, look for role models that inspire you, people in your life or celebrities, or if you can’t think of anyone write down what you would like your ideal life to be. When you’re feeling better get out and online – start meeting new people.”

“Be proactive.”

“Keep going until you have success because if you persist it will pay off. One of my favourite quotes is: ‘activity breeds success.’ If you fill the void you’ll be able to have a healthy loving relationship, which is one of the biggest human desires, building trust, empathy, better sexual connection and out of this world passion meeting each other’s needs, wants and giving you an abundance of energy and happiness.”

If you’re in a relationship and you’re still ’emotionally horny,’ Jayne recommends you look at when this first happened and “rewind to a time when you were happy.”

“What did you do differently? Start implementing those things to see if there is a change. Get out on a date night, discover each other’s love languages, get outdoors, go on an adventure, plan a weekend away, have some wine, laugh, bring back the romance and if all of that still fails then look at whether the relationship is right for you.”

“Ultimately you want to be happy because being lonely in a relationship is worse than being single.”

“Always look at how you can change things, how you have contributed to the dynamic and put the actions into place to change that,” Jayne added. “If you blame the other person it is very disempowering and leaves you stuck. Sometimes it’s better to be wrong and fix things than to be stubbornly right and end up in the same scenario with another person.”

RELATED: Why Vulnerability Is A Man’s Sexiest Asset

According to Jayne, we are at a point in history where we may be more emotionally horny than ever, “Especially with the mix of social media, coronavirus and more and more people connecting virtually.”

“Not to mention the boost in narcissists out there and people are afraid of getting hurt emotionally. More and more people I speak to struggle living with the fear of getting hurt so they live in their heads, they worry about what a person will do and their stops an emotional connection which leads to no relationship which then leads to more emotional horniness.”

“Seriously whilst technology has its benefits it has got more people in their heads and people need to be touched. We need physical contact to release the love cuddle hormone ‘Oxytocin,’ to release cortisol from our bodies. This improves mental and physical wellbeing.”

The Sydney Morning Herald has also reported on loneliness in Australia, writing in September, “Addicted to our smartphones, alienated by materialism, cynical about politics and disconnected from the wider community: modern life has made many of us feel more isolated than is healthy.”

“Then the world went into lockdown – and the age of loneliness turned chronic.”

The experts at VicHealth have called loneliness a “new public health challenge.” Likewise, high end escort Samantha X has previously confirmed to DMARGE the real reason many men seek sex outside of their relationships is out of a desire for a (or another) emotional connection.

On this topic, Jayne warns apps like Only Fans, downloaded like the plague during this time of… plague… are “total band-aid solutions.”

The users of Reddit also provided those feeling emotionally horny with some smart advice.

“Go get a massage,” one wrote. “When you’re single and trying not to make bad decisions out of loneliness, 90 minutes of therapeutic non-sexual touch focused entirely on your needs can be profoundly soothing.”

“Hard at the moment with Covid, but go take some salsa, swing or other partner dance classes. They’re usually around $15 for an hour and you’ll be passed around every 2 minutes into the arms of a new partner, face to face, working together to figure out some new fun step. A terrific way to get some close physical human contact in another non-sexual way that’s just warm and simple and pure fun. Even though you’re not going to hunt down romance, it’s POSSIBLE you’ll hit it off with someone and have a perfect new hobby in common.”

A post shared by F45 Training Bondi Beach (@f45trainingbondi) on

“Go to a yoga class. The stretching will relax your body tension, ease some stress, and the view of fit healthy bodies stretching all around you will remind you that you’re alive in the middle of a vibrant, exciting world filled with attractive possibilities. Again, don’t treat it like a hunting ground; do it to feel yourself grow stronger and less flustered. But again, it’s POSSIBLE you might catch someone’s eye and chat while putting your shoes on afterward.”

“The keys here are [sic] get out of your house, explore opportunities for both non-sexual human touch and personal physical care/development. You’ll feel more centered, less lonely, with more opportunities and less anxiety.”

“Go forth audaciously, son.”

Others suggested therapy and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (not necessarily in that order).

“Start taking a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. You’re not going to meet women there (rarely, and they do not go to be hit on), but the combination of intense exercise, learning to be comfortable and succeed in the most dangerous situations, and the constant close contact may satisfy an unconscious need for contact and it just clears your mind. I’m not a BJJ Is My Religion guy, but a lot of people will say they use it as therapy.”

Justin Bieber Spotted Wearing The Only Shoes Worse Than Crocs

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Justin Bieber is constantly-evolving his wardrobe and personal style is an incredibly captivating thing to watch. Some days, he’ll step out in outfits that are so impeccably stylish that we’re surprised he doesn’t just give up music entirely and focus on modelling. Then, once our spirits are up and we’re full of style inspiration, he’ll debut some atrocious ensemble that’ll have us questioning our praise.RELATED: Justin Bieber Combines Rare Formula 1 Jacket With Solid Gold Audemars Piguet WatchOne of his most divisive fashion choices is his love of Crocs. First released to (or imposed on) the public almost two decades ago, Crocs might just have the most mixed reputation of any shoe ever made. Many people loathe Crocs, but as Bieber and other celebrities like Post Malone, Bad Bunny and Romeo Beckham have demonstrated, they can actually look good. If you’ve got the panache to pull them off, that is.We’re slowly coming on board – but something that’s going to take us a bit more time to get used to are Bieber’s Yeezy clogs, which he was spotted wearing once again in Los Angeles yesterday.

Image: Getty
Officially called the Yeezy Foam RNNR, these wild-looking clogs are the brainchild of sportswear heavyweights Adidas and Kanye West, a close friend of Bieber’s. Justin and his wife Hailey made headlines when they made a visit to West’s Wyoming ranch during an apparent mental breakdown he suffered in July.RELATED: Kanye West’s Latest Meltdown Proves America’s Attitude To Men’s Mental Health Needs To ChangeMade in the US out of a polymeric foam partially derived from algae, the Foam RNNR (or ‘Yeezy Clogs’ as they’re better known) have been part of West’s push to make his fashion releases more sustainable and to bring jobs back to the US. We wonder how that fits in with his presidential platform…The Yeezy Clogs might be even more challenging to sartorially swallow than Crocs. At least Crocs are cheap: the Yeezy Clogs are currently fetching close to $1,000 on StockX. It’s a design that’s definitely not for everyone – but that’s Kanye’s raison d’être.Bieber’s fashion label recently Drew House teamed with Crocs on a collaborative yellow pair of the eponymous clogs, which Bieber debuted in dramatic style just last week. They’ve already sold out, too. Maybe there’s something in this clogs thing.

Lebron James Secures GOAT Status With $325,000 Richard Mille Watch

In case you’ve been living under a rock these last few weeks, the 2019-2020 NBA season playoffs have just wrapped up, with the Los Angeles Lakers beating Miami Heat in the finals to nab their first NBA championship in a decade. It’s been an exciting finals series, with names like Anthony Davis, Kyle Kuzma, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo duking it out in fierce style. But many would argue that the Lakers’ win was a foregone conclusion, seeing as they have LeBron James: widely considered not only one of the best basketballers active today but straight-up one of the greatest of all time. The 2020 NBA Finals added some significant silver to LeBron’s already expansive collection: not only is it his fourth NBA championship but he was also named the NBA Finals MVP for the fourth time too – becoming the first player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP with three different franchises (the Lakers, the Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers).Speaking of silverware, check out this Richard Mille he was rocking during the playoffs: an RM11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph worth around $325,000.

That’s to say nothing of the ‘flashy’ outfit…Richard Mille watches have fast become the celebrity athlete’s watch flex of choice. Not only are they incredibly expensive, flashy timepieces, but they’re light on the wrist and eminently wearable (thanks to the unique material technologies the brand uses) – perfect for the discerning sports superstar. It’s often hard to figure out which Richard Mille LeBron is wearing, because not only does he own a few – another, candy-blue RM11-03 ‘Jean Todt’ and this Felipa Massa limited edition – but he also loves to swap out their straps when his mood suits. While they vary wildly in case material, all RM11-03s feature a skeletonised automatic movement and a large, central date indicator. The RM11, one of the brand’s most popular models, is arguably the quintessential Richard Mille: here’s LeBron rocking the Jean Todt while celebrating his 2020 success at popular restaurant Nobu in Malibu on Oct 14, clutching a bottle of fancy tequila to boot.

In other Richard Mille news, the brand has just released another collaborative model with Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, who just snapped up his 13th French Open title in dramatic style, beating Serbian great Novak Djokovic on Oct 12.

From proving six-packs are an over-rated fad to showing the secret to a sculpted surfer’s body, Laird Hamilton makes headlines just as much for his fitness antics as his big wave exploits. At 56 years of age, the American big wave surfer continues to prove time-on-earth needn’t be a barrier to fitness, with everyone from The Guardian to Joe Rogan lapping up his health advice.Speaking of laps, Hamilton just took to Instagram with what we’re calling an “interminable” workout, involving a bungee cord, a snorkel, flippers and goggles.

Even “interminable.”Laird has also taken to Instagram recently to spread awareness about the benefits of saunas, which he claims has done wonders for his longevity.

With a global pandemic in full swing, it’s pretty safe to say we won’t be travelling far and wide for quite some time to come. Obviously, a lot of us miss this, not just those with an insatiable appetite for exploring unknown lands. Personally, i’ve never been that excited by the prospect of a ‘staycation’ but, the idea does sound better as travel restrictions seem to be perpetually extended. Then again, why do a staycation, when you could just turn your home into a hotel? It may seem a little silly, but the idea may give a small break from the unappealing prospect and reality of quarantining, self isolation and social distancing. But how would one turn their home into a hotel anyways? Well this robe from House Babylon is the ideal starting point.

I’m sure you are or were familiar with the joy of donning a hotel robe and swanning around your room in the matching slippers. It is almost as if it is compulsory when staying in a lavish hotel to do so, and hence to begin transitioning your home to such, you’ll need a mighty fine robe and House Babylon’s robe makes a compelling argument for itself. Made from Turkish Cotton, it is not only luxurious and comfortable, but also highly durable, enabling you to live out your hotel and travel fantasies time and time again. It’s also available in this this super cool ‘cash’ green colour that’s sure to impress any other hotel guests you may run into. Alternatively, you can go for a more traditional white number.

Priced at $58, we’re adamant that you’ll get a good return on enjoyment and comfort out of your purchase.

‘Grim’ Flightradar Photo Sums Up 2020 Aviation In Confronting Style
‘Grim’ Flightradar Photo Sums Up 2020 Aviation In Confronting Style

It shouldn’t need explaining much further, but 2020 really has taken a toll on aviation. Airlines have gone into administration, citizens in countries such as Australia have been told to start looking much closer to home if they want any hope of a holiday in the next couple of years, and those who have been able to fly feel damn guilty about it.But while we can all read stories from those most affected, words don’t always translate into images, until now. Flight tracking app Flightradar24 recently posted an image to its Twitter account that showed there were 154 of the iconic Boeing 747 in the sky.Normal, you may think, perhaps even more than you would expect given the situation. But Flightradar24 noticed that only four of those airplanes were actually carrying passengers – and one savvy user noticed there were only four airborne A380s at the same time – while the remaining 150 were being used to transport cargo around the world.

Not all of those 150 will be ex-passenger carrying 747s, naturally, as some will belong to couriers such as UPS and DHL, for example, but we have already seen several of the world’s airline gut their beloved fleet – including Air Canada, Lufthansa and Portuguese operator Hi Fly – so that they can transport cargo, including medical supplies to countries that need them most in “these unprecedented times.”Of course, not only do these new cargo-only routes help keep the global economy whirring, but they also help to bring in much-needed cash for the airlines so that they can weather the pandemic storm.As News.com.au reports, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates revenue generated from these cargo routes could hit the $155 billion mark by the end of the year, an increase on the figures predicted before we were dealt the COVID blow.At the same time, the IATA reckons income from passenger revenue will reach a ‘measly’ $336 billion, representing a more than 50% decline from the pre-COVID figures predicted.Much of the interior remodelling carried out by airlines has always been claimed to be on a temporary basis, but with international travel still but a distant dream for many, we imagine we’ll be seeing consistently similar flight radar images for months and potentially years to come.

Former NRL Great Anthony Minichiello Launches Mental Health Initiative Every Australian Should Get Behind
Former NRL Great Anthony Minichiello Launches Mental Health Initiative Every Australian Should Get Behind

From Viking advice we’d be loathe to forget to studies showing the power of simple changes on your wellbeing, mental health has been a huge topic of discussion in Australia this year. Why? For many, the ability to go to bed at night and not feel the crushing universe closing in remains an elusive goal.Sleepless nights in mind, former NRL great Anthony Minichiello has just launched Planking for Positivity, a challenge which aims to reinforce the message anxiety is nothing to be ashamed about.Planking for Positivity seeks to kick the stigma around anxiety and start a global conversation. The challenge fuses the physical with the mental too: far from having you sign up to some – let’s face it – intimidating 7 day meditation challenge, it’s simple. All you have to do is record a plank, post your video, and – when sharing it on social media – nominate three others to do it too. Oh and use the hashtag #planking4plus.Speaking to DMARGE, Minichiello said the decision to launch the movement was spurred on by this year’s unusual circumstances: “With what is happening with COVID, it definitely gave us that extra push to launch our charity because so many people’s lives have been affected and the strain on families have been immense.”“Our main goal really is to end the stigma on mental illness and to help prevent it for the current and future generations. The topic is very close to all our hearts. Each and everyone in the Planking For Positivity team has or has known someone who has been affected yet people aren’t willing to talk about it because of the stigma.”

“1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness in any year… That’s a lot of people and it could be you or someone close to you. Yet, once again, it’s something that people try to manage privately because it’s scary and confronting to show our vulnerabilities. But you know what, it’s all part and parcel of life.”

“We want to get people to Plank for Positivity and talk about what they are anxious about to show the world that it doesn’t matter who you are, we are all humans at the end of the day and life throws us curveballs. Sometimes, things can get tough and it is ok to talk about it,” Minichiello added.

Minichiello also told DMARGE, “Our main goal is to get people to open up and talk about what they are anxious about and the changes they will make for the better. We want to show the world that it doesn’t matter who you are, we can all be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives and it is OK to talk about it.”“Ultimately, we want to prevent mental illness for our generations and for future generations to come. COVID and the impact it would have is going to be profound. It is so important that we start today to improve the mental fitness of our younger generation to make sure that they are resilient. And if we cannot prevent it, at least equip them with the right tools so they know what to do and how to manage it.”

“It is just as important for people who aren’t affected by mental illness to know what to say and what to do if someone close to them is affected.”

Minichiello then gave us some tips on how to broach this topic of anxiety, when it’s not something you’re used to: “The first tip is that there is no perfect moment. The second tip is to start with someone who you will listen and whom you know will support you regardless of what you are going through. The third tip is that it doesn’t have to be face to face.”“Once you start, you’ll realise that it is really not that scary. Also, check out the people who have done the Planking For Positivity challenge on Instagram (#planking4plus) – if anything, 99% of people are so supportive. That’s a lot and I think that speaks for itself.”

‘Lost’ Australian Mountain Experience Makes Stunning Comeback
‘Lost’ Australian Mountain Experience Makes Stunning Comeback

Australian snow is fickle. The upshot? Most serious skiers and snowboarders seek deeper powder overseas. This year’s pandemic, however, has kept passports in draws and planes in hangars.

Not everyone went without though. Guy Williment, a 27-year-old photographer from Sydney has been showcasing the joys of the Australian backcountry – and in doing so may have stumbled across a Snowy Mountain experience hidden in plain sight, perhaps since the 1950s.

His latest escapade took place in late September – well after most Australians would consider hitting the slopes.

Another of Guy’s posts prompted followers to question why most Australians never bother to venture any further than Perisher. Perhaps we’re too quick to write backcountry skiing off as lots of effort, little return?

One Instagram user’s comment also suggests Guy may have stumbled on a somewhat ‘lost’ aspect to the Australian backcountry (or at least one that has been enjoyed, but kept well under wraps).

In response to the above photo, the user wrote, “My parents skied off those mountains in the 1950s using cable bindings on Norwegian downhill skis and seal skins to climb back up.”

“They [sic] could’ve believe people would bother to ski at Perisher, or Thredbo. Good to see another generation finding the real slopes that have been hidden in plain sight for so long.”

Intrigued? NZ freeskier Fraser MacDougall recently gave DMARGE the down low on the best (and worst) things about skiing in Australia and New Zealand, after an expedition with The North Face to compare the two.

“The best thing with both countries is we have a landscape that is very much uniquely our own, from gum-trees to the sand laden winds in Australia to the beautiful mountain valleys and ocean views for some of our best mountaineering locations in New Zealand.”

“It’s easy to get that feeling of an escape – something that surpasses just skiing as a sport.”

Image: Mark Clinton.

“As for the worst thing – both our seasons are too short, New Zealand has a leg up to Aus there a little bit, but the snow seems to always disappear too quickly.”

Fraser also told DMARGE he believes backcountry skiing is growing: “10 years ago there were very few people that got involved in the sport – now it feels like the normal progression for a lot of skiers.”

“Backcountry skiing at its core is to explore the trackless mountain ranges beyond the commercial ski boundaries. From a small hike or a multi-day touring trip to skiing down our largest mountains Mount Aspiring, Mount Cook and more, the more technical the better – it’s a rush.”

Image: Mark Clinton.

“The sport is for those wanting more and to explore some of the last vestiges of a fast-vanishing world. The pristine environments we get to access all around the world whilst also enjoying an awesome sport, skiing, makes for a great set up in life,” Fraser added.

“Maybe as the world gets a little bit more crazy looking forward we might see more people getting involved – escaping the pressure of population and the lift queues is alluring.”
