Flying in 2020 is a persona non grata experience. From the airport to the plane (to the quarantine hotel), if you don’t feel like a leper by the time you arrive, security hasn’t done its job.
However, there is one ~extra~ safety measure in place that is apparently only evident in business class on some flights, an Australian passenger who flew to Europe with Qatar Airways at the start of July told DMARGE.
That measure? Cabin crew wearing hazmat suits.
Earlier this month DMARGE spoke exclusively with Jaynee Wehbe, global sales director at TRIANGL, who recently was granted an exemption to travel to Ibiza on business, to find out what it’s like to fly flat to Europe right now.
Jaynee told us seeing the PPE suits felt bizarre: “It made me feel more confused than anything! I mean why is it necessary to cover your entire body? And if they think it’s necessary then why aren’t we doing it too?”.
“It was really hard to communicate with them too as the plane is loud enough and then you couldn’t see their mouth move or even their eyes!”
“The hazmat suit was only in business class: the other attendants wore a robe, mask and goggles only (only!),” Jaynee added. “Which is also confusing.”
View this post on Instagram
Another twist in the tale, according to Jaynee, is that the airport, when Jaynee flew, appeared less equipped to kill germs than the aircraft departing it: “Sydney international airport itself surprised me,” Jaynee told DMARGE.
“From memory I didn’t see any hand sanitizer stations, check in staff weren’t wearing gloves/masks nor was there any sanitizer even though they were dealing with our passports and documents.”
“Our temperature wasn’t taken upon arrival to the airport or even before boarding the flight which I found weird as we’re getting our temperature taken at restaurants now!”
Finally, Jaynee told us the face shield concept could do with some work: “Another thing I found weird was that they were handing out face shields for the flight and you weren’t allowed to walk onto the plane without wearing one.”
“But as soon as you walked past the flight attendant when you’re on the plane, you could take it off and have it off for the whole trip.”
“I just found the whole process inconsistent. Measures in place just to say that measures are in place.”
Qatar Airways is one of several airlines to introduce PPE suits for its cabin crew. Qatar Airways introduced the feature on the 18th of May to help the airline continue repatriating citizens around the world.
View this post on Instagram
According to an official statement, Qatar Airways’ cabin crew had already been wearing lower level PPE, such as masks and gloves, during flights for a number of weeks before this “extra precaution” was instigated.
“At Qatar Airways, we have introduced these additional safety measures onboard our flights to ensure the continued health and well-being of our passengers and cabin crew, and to limit the spread of coronavirus,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker.
DMARGE understands Qatar Airways has not officially announced whether the hazmat suits were intended to be across the board, or only for The Pointy End.
This also comes in a context where Qatar Airways are facing allegations of bumping economy ticket holders off flights and prioritising Pointy End passengers, after Sydney Airport reduced the number of arrivals any given aircraft can bring.

Patrick Johnson is one of Australia’s best-known tailors and leads a ‘new guard’ of young fashion designers and ateliers who are reinvigorating Australian fashion. Tamsin Johnson, his partner in crime, is one of Australia’s leading interior designers and decorators.
It comes at no surprise, then, that a place they call home is immaculately stylish. Luckily you can take advantage of their Midas touch: the power couple is selling their sumptuous home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
7 Ashley St, Tamarama, located minutes from the beach with sweeping ocean views, is just as beautiful inside as out – the Johnsons having blessed it with their sartorial and aesthetic brilliance.

The understated exterior gives way to a lavishly appointed interior – “a striking open plan living and dining area with soaring raked timber ceilings, wide oak flooring and a superior gas fireplace while flooded with natural light… top-of-the-range European gas appliances as well as extensive custom cabinetry, Venetian plaster benchspace and an expansive breakfast bar,” according to the listing.
DMARGE spoke exclusively to Jerome Srot, Director of Property Management at Ray White TRG, who had some key insights about the exclusive Tamarama property, which is heading to auction on August 18th.
“There still remains a lack of choice for quality homes in the Eastern Suburbs, which bodes well for prices… 79 Fletcher St, Tamarama sold in November last year for $6.25M.”

Still, you’d think that These Unprecedented Times might mean the property doesn’t reach similar highs, but Ray White TRG are confident it’ll fetch around $6 million. The Pandemic hasn’t changed how the Sydney property market fundamentally operates – people still want to go to auctions, and prices remain high.
“[We’re] finding that auction is still the preferred method of sale,” Srot relates.
“Even during the height of COVID restrictions, we were running ‘virtual’ auctions via Zoom… [but] in most cases, properties are selling prior to auction.”

With such attention focused on the property thanks to its stylish owners, you can be sure interest will be very high come August 18. If you manage to secure the place, fingers crossed some of their style magic will rub off on you too.

Anyone who says that it’s too hard to stay fit after your twenties needs to just take a look at this fitness influencer.
When you’re in your twenties, you can abuse your body and more or less get away with it. Late nights, overindulging, bad eating habits… A few weeks of clean living and exercise can reverse any (visible) damage dealt. Plus, you’re able to build muscle and lose weight quickly if you put your mind to it.
As your body starts to age, you have to put in far more effort to see the same sorts of gains, and you can’t bounce back so quickly from health stumbles. It’s no surprise that many men give up on being fit once they’re middle-aged because the amount of effort required to stay in shape becomes exponentially so much greater than it used to be – it just seems too hard.
Paul Sklar, however, stands as a living rebuttal to that argument. The 48-year-old American professional trainer and former world-ranked pro duathlete has developed a sizeable 861,000-strong following on Instagram thanks to his common-sense exercise tips – and let’s be frank, his amazing rig.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CC80a8lJiB5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
“I take a no-nonsense approach to my training,” Sklar relates on his website.
“I don’t bulk. I don’t cut. I train to stay in shape year-round. No BS.”
The North Carolina native’s advice comes as a breath of fresh air in an industry that’s dominated by fad diets and exercises. While not every man in their middle age might have a background as a professional athlete like Sklar has, his gimmick-free exercises are achievable for men of all fitness levels.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CC3Wa9hJzhq/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
“For the most part, your body is a reflection of your lifestyle.,” Sklar relates.
“Not everyone is blessed with good genetics, passion for health, the enjoyment of the physical demands of exercise, the willpower and mental discipline of eating consistently healthy and moderately, or the life circumstances that allow for the time necessary to accomplish their goals.”
“However, if you are conscious and mindful of the choices you make every day, a positive outcome is more predictable and more likely.”
“No matter your situation, try to stay positive, always remember your goals, and be the best you can be.”
From kettlebell squats combined with shoulder presses…

… to battle rope extravaganzas…
https://www.instagram.com/p/CCWdtJ4piMq/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
… there is enough of a variety of routines on Sklar’s page to keep you shredded well into your 90s.
Good luck…

Who doesn’t love to indulge themselves in pizza, doughnuts, cheese or any other kind of food that nutritionists and health advocates would turn their nose up at? We’ve all had that post-work snack “because I earned it”?
Letting the pants loose at the weekend is a joy shared by many. It’s time off from work, spent with family and friends, or even by yourself so you can recharge for the forthcoming working week. But if you’re putting yourselves through a strict diet, heading to the pantry for just one more square of chocolate, can have a bigger impact on your weight loss goals than you may have first thought.
Don’t believe us? Fitness coach James Kew recently took to Instagram to share a post that details how much of a negative effect just one cheat day can have if you’re trying to lose weight.
View this post on Instagram
Note that last sentence, this post applies to anyone wanting shed pounds, rather than bulk up. In that case, cheat days can be beneficial, as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has proven on many occasions.
Back to the subject at hand. James provides an example of someone looking to lose weight, who has a maintenance calorie intake target of 2,500 (to maintain their current weight) but in order to lose weight, they need to consume 20% fewer calories, so 2,000, per day – although this goes against a previous study that found that as long as you remained active, you could be more relaxed when it comes to eating.
When Saturday approaches and the lads come round, it can be all too easy to pop open a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, kick back with a takeaway pizza and crack open a couple of cold ones. You’ll no doubt feel amazing after (maybe not the following morning), especially if you’ve consumed nothing but rations all week.
View this post on Instagram
But as James points out, those two foodstuffs alone can easily equate to 3,000 calories in just one sitting. Add a few beverages or mirror it for breakfast and/or lunch, and consuming 5,500 calories in one day becomes instantly achievable.
That one cheat day alone can, therefore, result in a higher average calorific intake for the entire week, and way above your target amount. If you continue the trend week on week, then you’re not going to lose the weight you want, but rather just plateau.
James does add that it’s ok to treat yourself and “enjoy life” – because nobody can really enjoy life eating nothing but lettuce leaves and carrot sticks – but it’s all about the most bounded-around word in fitness and nutrition: “moderation”.

2020 has been to the economy what 2001 was to airport security. But as Australia's hospitality and travel industries limp away from March, the ASX, buoyed by a miraculous NASDAQ rally, is sprinting already.
While experts agree it will take years for the ~real~ economy to grow back to 2019 levels, the stock market is currently living in a world of its own. Whether this can be maintained (some say thanks to government backing it can) or whether it's an over-ripe peach about to go putrid, we'll leave for the experts to debate.
What's not up for question is that there are currently, for those who like risk in their lives, some mind-boggling stocks on the market right now. Rather than trust your mate, though, who 'heard a tip from his brother's friend' (or your Uber driver who assures you 'there's still momentum'), DMARGE hit up an expert for his top three ASX stock tips this week.
Enter: Luke Laretive, CEO of Seneca Financial Solutions in Melbourne. Luke sent DMARGE his top three stock tips for July 2020, which include two (relatively) safe bets and one "very naughty" pick. Here they are.
July 2020 Picks
All figures in Australian dollars (1 AUD = 0.71 USD at time of publishing).
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) US$2,961.97
E-commerce remains the #1 pass-time of the locked-down and socially distanced. We can’t spend money on travel, restaurants or experiences (which has been a key investment theme of the past few years, experiences over ‘stuff’) – we are now back on the consumerism bandwagon!
Amazon is primed to capture the vast majority of this shift. It’s growing dramatically outside the US, at very high margins (AWS, media, ad business) and is a now a multi-sector monopoly. If it gets hit with an anti-trust driven breakup, it will only unlock additional value for shareholders in my opinion.
In short: Probably going to get bigger, better and more dominant.
Super Retail Group (ASX: SUL) $8.19
SUL owns Super Cheap Auto, BCF, Rebel & Macpac. See above RE: the new consumerism bandwagon. We also can’t travel overseas, so once borders open you’re going to see people doing up their cars, buying caravans and campers and going hiking and camping and 4WD’ing all over Australia.
In the US, LCI Industries recently reported earnings 40% ahead of analyst estimates citing:
“Increased demand for RVs drove accelerated outdoor recreational products sales, which was well ahead of increasingly bullish expectations as we moved through the early part of Q2. In this post-COVID environment, RVs continue to be one of the safest ways for American families to take a vacation. Underscoring this strength, a recent RVIA survey reported that 46M people intend on taking a trip in an RV in the next 12 months.”
SUL is not too expensive 5.6x EV/EBITDA on consensus estimates (vs 5 year average of 7.7x) either.
In short: A rare business in retail with structural tailwinds at a reasonable valuation.
TNT Mines (ASX: TIN) $0.14
I always like to throw in something saucy for the punters. TNT recently acquired a strategically located land package in Utah that is highly prospective for uranium and vanadium (used to batteries). I like management, I like the tight company structure (not too many shares on issue, low market cap, cash in the bank and management alignment) and I like how under the radar this company is… for now. With less-attractive peers valued at multiples of the current value of TIN, results pending and not many shares around, it won’t take much for this to pop in my opinion.
In short: Very high risk, very speculative, very naughty.

There are two types of gym-goer: those who love to train solo, being able to get into their own state of mind, to work at their own pace and to just zone out from their daily lives. Then you have those who train with a partner, maybe to add a bit of competitiveness to see who can lift more, or simply to be on call should that last squat or bench press prove to be just a little too much.
World Champion Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton can hardly be short of friends but during the racing season he spends a lot of time alone, so finding a gym partner is easier said than done. Fortunately, he's never too far from his beloved bulldog Roscoe (his other best friend Coco recently passed away, RIP), so Roscoe has had to step up to help Lewis through the most challenging of times.
View this post on Instagram
If a recent post by the British F1 great is anything to go by, his latest task is to help out with ab crunches and squats. The average male English Bulldog can weigh 24kg/54lbs. We're not sure of Roscoe's exact dimensions, but he will no doubt provide ample weight for Lewis to perform front squats with.
He's also a great deadweight to allow Lewis to perform ab crunches, giving him a strong core, vital for withstanding the immense g-force put upon the body when he takes corners at 200km/h.
And unlike some gym partners who may criticise you on your form or tell you you can do better, Roscoe gives Lewis an encouraging high-five after each exercise. If that isn't the sign of a paw-fect partner, then we don't know what is.
Lewis has been putting some serious hours in the gym lately, especially during the lockdown period afforded to him by The Virus. A previous Instagram snap showed him looking to be what is frankly, the best shape of his life. He said at the time, "This has been the best training period I've ever had, I can't stop and I won't!"
His fitness journey shows no signs of slowing down, with him being in the gym during any downtime he has away from the track.
We'll high-five to that.

The Beckham family is the most stylish celebrity clan in the world. We guess that’s to be expected when you’ve got matriarch Victoria, acclaimed fashion designer and ‘it girl’ at the helm, alongside one of the most famous and talented footballers of all time.
While The Bat Kiss continues to ravage the world, the family has cannily chosen to take a bit of a sabbatical. Earlier this year they were enjoying themselves in the English countryside, and now they’re taking advantage of the Italian summer with a holiday in Puglia.
Head of the family David Beckham has been enjoying some automotive ‘boy’s trips’ with his three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz – David sharing a photo on his Instagram story showing the lads squeezed into a diminutive classic Fiat 500.
Now it seems David and his eldest Brooklyn have ditched the Cinquecento for an EV drop-top version, posting a photo of the two behind the wheel looking incredibly dapper modeling Beckham’s latest business venture – his own line of sunglasses.
“I set out to create glasses that would never go out of style… pieces that I would love to wear myself,” Beckham’s said of his spectacle collection. The Italian-designed line of sunglasses features classic acetate designs that epitomise ‘retro cool’.
It’s not the first time David’s dipped his toe into the world of fashion: Becks previously invested in and collaborated with English menswear brand Kent & Curwen, and currently serves as the ambassadorial president of the British Fashion Council.
21-year-old Brooklyn Beckham is no stranger to this sort of thing either, who’s made a name for himself as a model and amateur photographer. Brooklyn made headlines earlier this year after announcing his engagement to American actress Nicola Peltz, which his dad was keen to celebrate.
It’s great to see father and son work together – if only our dads were as cool as Brooklyn’s…

As the economy collapsed at the start of 2020, experts feared the worst. Stocks were meant to go off a cliff and we were supposed to be plunged into a wasteland of beans and rice.
Prosecco parties aside, they did and we were. But while the health impacts of The Pandemic are set to drag on for years, the stock market has rallied miraculously quickly.
The upshot? Even though it will take a while for the ~real~ economy to get back to the size it was in 2019, the market has already gone bullish once again. Though some call this unjustified fizz, the government backing of MAGA stocks (and the investor confidence we’ve seen so far) has led others to say the market may survive this thing better than first thought.
Speaking of uncertainty, Tesla just became the most valuable car company in the world.
As Forbes reported on Monday, “Tesla stock is [now] worth more than triple the combined value of US automakers General Motors (GM GM +0.6%) and Ford (F).”
“It’s insane given that these two automakers generated 10 times more sales than Tesla last year.”
Alongside this, Tesla co-founder Elon Musk was on Tuesday catapulted, briefly, to ‘fifth richest man in the world’ status.
So, is this all hype, or is there real worth behind Tesla’s meteoric rise?
DMARGE asked James Whelan, Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney, for his take.
“We look at valuations.”
“Tesla [is] running at something like 230 times the price to earnings ratio; the price of Tesla is 230 times what it earns on a per-share basis.”
“That’s insane.”
“The market as a whole was trading at 23/24 times [the price to earnings ratio] last week, before the pandemic hit it was trading at 17; the average amount the market as a whole trades at is usually around 14 or 15.”
In other words, though there is some value beneath, Tesla’s stock is a bubble.
Whelan also told DMARGE, though Tesla makes “beautiful cars” it will face stiff competition from the likes of VW, the biggest European carmaker in the world, and other companies, which just need to “flick a few switches” before being able to able to produce electric vehicles “much more efficiently, much cheaper and in greater numbers than Tesla.”
The above factors, combined with the “fanboi” culture around Tesla and Elon Musk’s eccentric personality, deter Whelan from investing in Tesla.
“It’s trading at such a ludicrous ratio… why would you do it?”
A safer option, for those who have already made money from Tesla, is to now invest in more stable stocks. “Smart money,” Whelan tells us, “would… buy copper or lithium. That way you don’t have to choose between Tesla, VW, Porsche or Toyota.”
“They’re all going to go to electronic vehicles, so I’d just buy lithium; it’s used in the batteries, or copper which is used in [practically] every part of the electronic vehicle. Then I don’t really care who wins this fight, I know that if they both win, I’ll win.”
“Even if they both lose I’ll still probably win.”
“I don’t want to have to worry about Elon Musk’s dodgy 4 am tweets, I’d rather just own a commodity that’s going to benefit from an electronic revolution, isn’t that easier?”
Dude…I just lost $10k because of this tweet. Wtf is wrong with u
— Elvis
(@TradeLikeElvis) May 1, 2020
Another factor at play, hiking up the bubble, Forbes suggests, is short squeezing. This happens when investors short Tesla, only for their bet not to pay off (and for them to be forced to buy Tesla shares and return them to their broker).
As Forbes reports, “The higher stock price wipes out even more short sellers, which in turn drives the stock price even higher. This repeats again and again, sending the stock price to bananas levels. And this vicious cycle is what we call a ‘short squeeze.'”
“The dollar value of all shorted Tesla shares is close to hitting $20 billion. No US stock in history has ever been that shorted.”
“For perspective, Apple AAPL +0.3%, the second-most shorted stock in America, has 13 billion dollars’ worth of its shares shorted. But… the company is 14 times bigger than Tesla.”
“The sheer magnitude of short sellers put Tesla at risk of being caught in a short squeeze of historic proportions,” (Forbes).
There is some value beneath the bubble though. As Mathew Cassidy, Managing Director at Partners Wealth Group, told DMARGE, some of Tesla’s stock price’s recent rise can be attributed to Tesla’s evolution as a company: “Tesla started as trying to establish a brand,” Cassidy told DMARGE.
“Now they’re actually starting to become a lot more commercial – as soon as a business goes from development to commercialisation the revenue starts to flow and that’s when they really start to perform.”
He also said another factor to consider when weighing up whether to invest in a company, or a first mover, is how open they are to innovation: “Netflix approached Blockbuster about 10 years ago and blockbuster denied [them].”
Amazing, Volks Wagon head of Marketing, credits Elon and says “without Tesla we would be so BOLD.”. VW has committed $30B euro to put >1 million electric cars /year by 2025. We are heading towards a “Kodak Moment” with the demise of Internal Combustion car.
— Peter H. Diamandis (@PeterDiamandis) November 29, 2017
Kodac, Blockbuster, Motorola and Nokia were all great businesses that failed to reinvent themselves. The question for modern investors, then, is whether Tesla will remain at the leading edge or whether other companies will come in and do what they’ve been doing in a smarter way.
As Whelan told DMARGE, there’s plenty of motivation for companies to catch up to Telsa: “VW, their entire motivation is going to now be about EV because of what’s going on in China. They’re late to the party, but you’ve got amazingly productive and amazingly efficient workshops all around the world for all these car makers.”
“That’s the competition Tesla has in front of them, and quite frankly I just don’t like to be a part of very bubbly stocks because when the rug gets pulled out it gets pulled out really hard.”
On that note, Cassidy said, “You’ve got to understand where your risk is coming from,” noting that generally, after historical moments of crisis (for instance the GFC, and September 11) when stocks start getting expensive and “when you start getting tips from the taxi driver… because a lot of momentum is going on, it’s probably a good time to start selling them.”

It’s the trillion-dollar question. When will international travel return, and what role will Australia play? The timid aunt or the daring mistress?
Being one of the fortunate countries when it comes to coronavirus, Australia is unlikely to be a trailblazer in re-opening its borders.
Recent Qantas announcements suggested non-essential flights to and from Australia wouldn’t start until at least March next year. On top of that, experts are dubious we could see any semblance of normality until at least 2023.
However, a recent economic update by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, news.com.au reports, may have just dropped a clue as to when international air travel will resume in Australia – and it could be sooner than you thought.
Australia’s borders, the economic plan states, are to reopen on January the 1st, 2021, with a two week quarantine period to be required of travellers.
RELATED: Why Returning Australians May Be Forced To Fly Home In Luxury
That’s not to say business as usual will commence (as news.com.au puts it, “Don’t rush out to try and book a flight because there’s no guarantee that planes will be taking off again then or at anywhere near pre-pandemic levels”), but it is a potentially positive sign.
The budget update reveals Australia is in recession and facing a huge debt, deficit and unemployment hit – all based on a series of assumptions about when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
The prediction that international borders will reopen on the 1st of January 2021 is outlined in the document.
View this post on Instagram
“From 1 January to 30 June 2021, it is assumed that the travel ban is lifted, but that a two-week quarantine period is required of arrivals to Australia,” the Treasury document states.
“This leads to the resumption of arrivals by temporary and permanent migrants, but at lower levels overall than normal.”
That said, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg points out the plan is not set in stone.
“The assumptions are that it very gradually starts to come back, that quarantine is applied, that you start potentially bringing in international students,” he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.
“Of course the environment with respect to the coronavirus is very fluid. Decisions haven’t been taken about the start date for that.”
“Australia banned all non-resident international arrivals on March 21, a key measure in preventing outbreaks of the disease,” perthnow.com.au reports.
A second outbreak in Victoria, and now NSW, is now set to test the nation again.
